Large Professor also known as Large Pro and Xtra P (born William Paul Mitchell on March 21, 1972, in the Harlem section of New York, New York. USA), is a New York City-based hip hop record producer and emcee. He is also best known as a founding member of the influential underground hip hop group Main Source, and as a frequent collaborator with Nas. About.com ranked Large Professor #5 on its Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers list.

At age 17, Large was given the opportunity to program beats for Eric B. & Rakim’s album Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em (1990) while still attending high school. While working with them, he discovered Nas, who got a management deal with Serchlite Publishing (headed by MC Serch from former group 3rd Bass) and produced three tracks on Nas’s debut album, Illmatic (1994), after he was signed by Columbia/SME Records. His work with Eric B. & Rakim eventually led him to work on Kool G Rap & DJ Polo’s Wanted: Dead or Alive (1990), producing (officially credited as a co-producer) the album’s lead single and iconic hip-hop classic, “Streets of New York.”

For many years, people thought that Large Professor directly taught DJ Premier how to use the Emu SP-1200 sampling drum machine, which Large used to help program many of his beats during the 1990s. However, according to Large Professor, he just showed DJ Premier to enhance what he already had.

“Man forreal, we gotta do something dangerous because this is me really wanting to step my ranks up

“Man forreal, we gotta do something dangerous because this is me really wanting to step my ranks up with the top rank official so we gonna make glass happen. This gon be some real sh*t that we do, ya know?”

When Jay-Z and Nas first made the decision to drop “Black Republicans”, they were able to shake the foundation of the game without even hearing the song. The feature on Hip Hop Is Dead was more than enough to have fans jumping out of their seats.

There may be yet another clash of the titans on the way as Raekwon revealed that he and Kool G Rap were in the process of linking up with each other in order to create an album.

Strictly talk for now, there have been no in depth details revealed in regards to what kind of project or when to expect it. As with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II, Rae knows that it takes time for a masterpiece to be created and sometimes a person must be patient and pre-heat before trying to light Hip Hop ablaze.

Already working on The Wu-Massacre with Ghostface Killah and Method Man along with recently signing Capone-N-Noreaga within his IceWater imprint, the Chef continues to cook up more and more surprises.

During an interview with AllHipHop, the rapper gave a little more incite as to what the two were in the process of brewing.

“We talking about doing a project together. Kool G Rap and the Chef. You know what kind of sh*t is that gonna be.”

“We gon a lot of history checkin’, a lot of real gangster sh*t gon be on this one, forreal, so get ready for that.”

Rappers have constantly reminded themselves, as they have risen among the ranks, to maintain good yard work and make sure that the grass is cut. The industry has bred many snakes that sit and wait to strike. Real always recognizes real and find a way to filter out the phony.

“We talk about real sh*t. We go outside of rap with it. I just look at it like this my n*gga, know what I mean? There’s something about brothers that taught me what I know. When they still around bustin’ they rifle, that’s what it was about when you was a young’n. Be molded by the strongest. These n*ggas are the strongest, the top elite of rap, and they callin me?”

As Rae reflected on his times growing up, he gave further admiration for G Rap to solidify his status in the Hip Hop ranks.

“You know your name is always in my grab bag. You gave me life, you know that right. I just think about the times we was out on the block camouflaged up, tryna live and just make it. It was like your sh*t stayed in the cassette box.”

As tantalizing as the idea sounds, time will tell exactly how this pans out between the two. Some dreams come true, whereas others are mainly a figment of a person’s imagination. Let’s hope this dream can become a reality.

NewYork NewYork #1

(Kool G Rap – Streets Of New York)

This week it’s all about NYC..The Big Apple. Why? because I’m going there on Friday to spend a few days with someone very special who is and has been an inspiration. Words don’t tend to do feelings justice so I’ll leave it at that…regular visitors to themusicologist will know that I have a tendency to wax lyrical and believe me I would like to continue in that tradition but being a dyed in the wool romantic the poetry could run away with me so I’ll do me best to rein it in before I get all 18th Century on yer arse and end up prancing about in velvet suits, curling up my ‘locks’ and spouting Wordsworth and Coleridge poems !!

So to balance that out hold this piece of 21st Century hip-hop from one of New York City’s legendary lyricists, the trail blazing, Kool G Rap .. one of the greatest rappers to have ever graced the M.I.C whose legacy runs deep. Member of Marley Marl’s Juice Crew, (along with MC Shan, Roxanne Shante, Big Daddy Kane and BizMarkie), the Cat has influenced many a BIG name and is highly regarded and respected by those in the know as a progenitor of the style which now dominates. A man whose authenticity regarding street narrative is beyond doubt..one final piece of information..he was born in 1968 which seems to be a significant year for many reasons.

Percy Chapman aka Trag is a true master.
You can check his credentials in this documentary about…

“Queensbridge: the world’€™s largest housing project, with the richest legacy in hip-hop: from The Juice Crew, to Nas, Mobb Deep and the realest of them all: Tragedy. While still in his mother’s womb, Tragedy’s dad is shot dead. Thirteen years later, with his mom hooked on smack, Trag has to hustle to survive, but the kid’s a rap genius and is signed to the world famous Juice Crew ’til he’s busted and sent to Riker’s at 16. Trag emerges political, releasing his Intelligent Hoodlum album. ‘Nuff respect, but he’s eclipsed by young rapper Nas. Trag falls prey to the streets where he discovers teen rappers Capone-N-Noreaga. After dissing Snoop Dogg, they get a record deal. Trag is hailed as a genius for masterminding their geo-political War Report album.
Capone is busted and Noreaga finds stardom, leaving Trag to starve. Then Trag’s mom ODs. At first Trag turns to crime, then finds inspiration, turning pain to beauty with underground albums Against All Odds and Still Reporting. Trag meets Nore to talk about making music together again, but cops pull up on ‘em, throwing Trag in jail. Out on bail, Trag is still reporting from the hood, keeping it real in Queensbridge.“
That’s the station where he started -in 1990- what would later become the Stretch and Bobbito Show, which many consider the best show ever. The guy NORE used to call “the albino ostrige” recalls a number of great moments and a greater number of (then) unsigned rappers who blazed the show : cats like Jay-Z, Eminem, Big Pun, ODB, Big L, Biggie, and also a 16 y.o kid in shorts named Nasir…

Almost all of them rap,
but have no idea their head-coach is one of the best who ever did it…
They’ll get a pass, tho : they weren’t even born the day Marley Marl gave Ace a ticket into the legend by lettin him in his mother’s apartment in Queensbridge…
Right here, the Masta finally tells the world how a Brownsvillian ended up in the legendary Juice Crew, and how he hooked up with Marley Marl, Shan, and Craig G the same day Kool G Rap recorded his 1st track ever.

HHHTime for some akshun, Today’s post is for people who like Rap. Period. That’s it.

HHHTime for some akshun,

Today’s post is for people who like Rap. Period. That’s it. You like bars? You like flows? You like lyrics that make you go ooooh? Then this is for you. If you said no to any of these questions, leave now.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to post this ish yesterday exactly one minute after it was posted! Unfortunately my code-illiterate ass just couldn’t get it to embed. Thankfully, as expected, someone Youtube‘d it and we’re back in business.

THE CYPHER

Yesterday the annual shamefest known as the BET hip-hop awards took place and well, as expected, it was a useless piece of goonery crap that only helped to ensure that those who don’t like hip-hop stay hating. That being said, this award show has provided us with 1 good thing every year and it’s those damn (Rap nerd wet dreams - ‘What if…’) Cyphers. Last years dopest cypher featured Juelz Santana, Fabolous, Ace Hood (Who surprisingly rocked it even though he can’t write a song worth his life) and Jadakiss running a mean anchor. Well, I’m happy to say that this years top cypher nearly made me wet myself. And if it doesn’t make you at least kegal a couple dozen times, then you lied about one of the above questions.

No more talkin. RAP! This one’s gonna have people arguin for a while….

The other 2 cyphers (that were decent, but nowhere near the one above) can be found below:

Cypher #2 ft. Wale, Nipsy Hussle, Gsan & KRS-One

Cypher #3 ft. Nicki Minaj, Buckshot, Crown Royyal & Joe Budden (Budden’s a problem!)

A & E

It seems like the thing to do these days for rappers in their mid-30’s is to find another rapper in their mid-30’s who roughly holds the same stature and combine to make a group. Canibus and Keith Murray. Del the Funky Homosapien and Tame One. DJ Quik and Kurupt. And even though it would seem like all of these would be dope, or at very least entertaining, only the Quik and Kurupt really popped for me (and I’m a Del fan to the core). Well we have another pairing for you and this time, it might just work out. 2 people that have influenced a LOT of your favorite rappers but rarely ever get their mention, ladies and gents, I give you A & E (a.k.a. Masta Ace and Edo G.)

**sidenote — for all you Eminem fans, if you didn’t realize that Em started as a Masta Ace clone you better go do your research. Em’s even copped to it himself.**

MASTA ACE & EDO. G – EI8HT IS ENOUGH

The homie Hevehitta hit me off with his new mixtape with DJ Unexpected entitled Deadly Duo (Nas & Jay-Z). Seeing that Nasir and Hov are two of the best to ever do it, downloading this one is a no-brainer.

It’s loaded with demo tracks, rare unreleased joints including a Nas collabo with Kool G Rap, and two “Look What I Found” break-beat segments where Unexpected goes IN on the samples used for each MC’s respective classic mid-90’s album. This looks like an essential part of any hip-hop head’s digital crates.

To get the full tape as a podcast, click here to check out Podomatic. You can also purchase this particular tape for 8 bucks here and receive another mixtape for free.99. I mean, who doesn’t like free shit?

Track list & download link below. Shout to Hevehitta and the good folks at Diggers Union for the hook up, Enjoy!
