I’ve loved Popsicles for as long as a can remember so they are another perfect way to celebrate my 50th year. I love all kinds and shapes and colors but the classic “twin pop” is the one with the most memories. I don’t know how many times I’ve bought a bag of twin pops and eaten all of them in just a day or two. One particular summer comes to mind that I ate lots and lots of Popsicles. Bill was doing an internship at INEL in Idaho and staying with my parents. So after work, all alone in our hot apartment I would eat Popsicles one after another, after another. The apartment was littered with wrappers and Popsicle sticks.

As a child I made Popsicles in ice-cube trays with toothpicks for sticks. I made them with Wylers or Flavor-aid. Koolaid was more expensive so I rarely used that. I mixed them up using less water than for a drink so the Popsicles had more flavor. I actually put up a sign on the door and sold Popsicles to my neighbors. My mom was very good at teaching me about profit. I paid her for the supplies out of my sales.

As an adult I’ve made Popsicles in small paper cups out of everything from fruit juice to homemade yogurt with fruit for added flavor. If I didn’t have enough Popsicle sticks I would use plastic spoons or even forks. They work surprisingly well. I think there is nothing better on a hot day than an ice cold Popsicle! Unless it is three or four Popsicles!

What do I find in yonder bin of crappy stuff??

I found 5 And they were only $1.50 per ball. What a perfect way to try out the kool aid dying method I found on http://www.lethalknits.com

First I must play with it a bit. Like a cat with a mouse… Or a ball of yarn. (see what I did there?)

Then comes the fun part. Wait until children are asleep or they will steal your stuff – at least my little monkeys will.

Lay skein in crockpot, no twisting, and cover with water. Turn on crockpot to medium until yarn is warm. This is so the fibers will open up and accept the dye. You can add some vinegar to the mix if it makes you feel more secure but I didn’t because I’m a slacker and was too excited to start.

Now open up the kool aid (sugar free only) and sprinkle it over the yarn in a pleasing manner.

The first time I followed lethal’s instructions down to colour but not the second time.

Here’s the hard part. Wait until the water is clear again. Seems crazy but it does happen. Then using a couple wooden spoons, flip over the yarn and sprinkle with other colours. I couldn’t find lemonade flavour but my yarn was already an off white so I wasn’t too concerned about it.

Biggest hint – red and green are very vibrant so maybe use less of those colours. The skein in the original tutorial that I followed has much better colour definition. I was also drinking a bottle of wine so it might be user error.

When the water is clear on your second go around turn off the crockpot. Allow the yarn to cool to room temperature. I did not follow this step because I’m impatient and had the wine. I’m sure it didn’t affect anything but might want to do it if you are trying this out.

if when you allow the yarn to cool, move it to a strainer in the sink and rinse with water.

After you’re done rinsing, gently squeeze – without twisting or wringing – the skein out and hang to dry. These steps I DID follow diligently. I even had the patience to allow the skeins to dry over 24 hours.

Now comes the fun part. Ball up and use!!

I love my yarn and have two balls of each colour. I’m saving the other ball for a light pink, light blue, yellow combo.

When my son told me he wanted a penguin theme, he asked me to make penguin masks. As I said in my last post, we’ve got a lot on our plate–moving, garage sale, memorial service coming up. So, I needed something that would be easy. I found these great masks through a google search, but I don’t have a sewing machine and there was no way I was hand sewing a dozen penguin masks. So, I improvised. I hot glued them. They turned out great and all the kids loved them!

Sorry about the lighting. Don’t they all look so cute!

I also made blue koolaid and blue jello jiggles. We had a bounce house and snow cones. The kids were all sugared up!

My pictures today were just not good. I had too much going on. Sorry. I also made penguin cake pops. They were a lot of work and I had a little trouble with them…

I have to admit, something about that picture just tickles me. I seriously sat there and looked at the dead penguin until I finished all of them. He’s so cute. And this guy…LOL!

My husband was great about it, though. He stepped up to the plate and ate the dead bird. Whatta guy!

Fortunately, I had enough that survived. The only problem we had was rain. It was forecast for 3 p.m. with a 30% chance of rain but at around 11:55a.m., minutes before the party started, it started raining, like a sudden monsoon. So, we didn’t think we’d get to enjoy the bounce house, but the rain eventually stopped and other than a few muddy shoe prints on my floors, it didn’t dampen the day at all.

And my little guy was a happy camper…or…penguin!

Who hasn’t seen the political rants on Facebook?  I unfriended a few people solely because they were trying to force feed their Kool-Aid to me.  I understand having an opinion but some people also have this compelling need to blast their views on everyone else with misunderstanding that if they repeat something over and over loud enough people will be swayed to their way of thinking.

Okay.  So now the political ads on television are starting to gett a little more serious.  It seems that there are multiple purposes to the ads.  First, to not get you to vote for the other guy.  Second, to vote for them.  Third, to donate.  I really think those are the primary phases.

In general I try to ignore the rants and the smoke.  However, I received an email recently that just kind of annoyed me.  It is from the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.

I don’t mind getting informative emails (even though I know they will be slanted) but I do mind being treated like an ignorant asshole.

How about some subtlety?  The big red button that overrides everything else on the screen that screams DONATE! and the multiple battle cries to back these retarded turds on a campaign to besmirch President Obama.  Seriously.

Here is some of the text from the email when taken out of context:

You know what that says to me?……..It says that President Obama is scared!

let’s make sure he leaves shaking in his boots

President Obama is in Philadelphia today scrambling for support

What am I, eight years old?  Does this rhetoric actually work on people?

Here’s an idea.  How about we work on fixing the shit that’s wrong instead of horsing around with this crap?  All this diversionary tripe just tries to make the majority of the dummies who vote forget that there are real problems.

Realistically I can’t imagine how anyone thinks either of the two candidates can fix anything.  In fact, how long has it been since we as a country haven’t as a necessity been digging ourselves out of situations created by lousy decision-makers we voted into office?  America used to lead the world in all of the relevant categories.  Now we basically suck and we get to watch these two idiots fight to see who drives the sucktrain into a mountainside.

Am i missing something or does everyone think this crap is okay?

Disclaimer:  This isn’t a rant.  This is me being sad.

So I went to a birthday party today and all they had to drink besides water was Cherry Koolaid, so there is my super red tongue! lol

I awakened Saturday morning to “Happy Cinco” and “Viva Mexico!” texts from friends and family.  “Are y’all having Mexican for dinner tonight?” and “Don’t drink too much tequila!” were close seconds.  How awkward!  I didn’t know whether to issue dinner invitations or contact a designated driver!!

Other bloggers obviously felt the same way.  One of my favorites, “Amelia’s Hope Blog” summed up my thoughts…”A day that once celebrated Mexico’s defeat of French troops and that has subsequently  been bastardized into a day of drinking and food!”  Her thoughts tickled my brain and made me ponder the loss of the original significance of the holiday.  Much like Memorial Day, the original meaning of “el cinco de mayo” has been buried beneath layers of marketing and consumerism.  In an attempt to rescue the true spirit, I shared the following on my Facebook page, and now share it with you, dear reader….

I hope that all my friends celebrate a personal victory today; whether your larger-than-life adversary has been finances, a relationship, or career issues, you can defeat it just as Mexican villagers defeated the French army on this date in history…with daring and determination.  Viva Mexico!

If I have learned anything from the path I’ve traveled from unhappy wife to divorced, single mom, it is that it takes courage to stand up for your own happiness.  To drink the koolaid that comes from your own source, not what is forced upon you by others.  And that is a true reason to celebrate.  “Viva Independencia!” is my own personal motto today as I sip the sweet koolaid of freedom.

This is a bit of a this-and-that article – with several points that sort of tie together.

I was recently up in Auckland visiting friends and family. (Auckland is the largest metropolitan centre in NZ)  And while this is all anecdotal, I was intrigued by the conversations I was having and the shift in attitude.  People (most)were asking my opinion of the economy.  Not specifically because I write a blog about such things, but because they are enquiring in a general way. To everyone they know I suspect.  Looking for confirmation and validation of their concerns.

They are all getting uneasy. Things aren’t looking so rosy. It is getting harder and harder to make a living and pretend things are normal.  The recession is over three years old already, things should have started to turn around by now – but the prospects are looking gloomier, not better.

Gosh, what a surprise…!!!

Actually, perhaps that shouldn’t be a surprise. Not that things aren’t looking so good, but that people just had this blind optimism for so long that it would all come right sooner or later – the government would sort it, or it would sort itself.  People expected that things would be no different this time than they were for all of the previous recessionary cycles over the last 3-4 decades.

I have been going “Hello… hello… is anybody awake out there” for several years now, and wondering why everyone seemed to be sleepwalking into the future.  Wasn’t it painfully obvious that this was not your average blip to the downside?  I saw armageddon in the making – and they saw… what exactly?

I still don’t think they see things as super-serious, but they sure as hell don’t like what they do see and are getting uncomfortable.  Apparently they can feel the water starting to get hot afterall.  And it appears they seem to be losing some faith in the ability of the government to make it all better.

Well of course the government isn’t going to make it all better – the government is the problem.  But that conclusion is a still a step(or more) too far for most people yet.

The pain is going to have to be ratcheted up a few more notches yet, before they start seriously squealing and taking note of what is happening around them – and enquiring into why we are where we are.

The second interesting event was a recent interview we did at work. It was with a woman who had been working in the social services sector with elder-care. Her position has just recently been disestablished, so she didn’t feel the need to bite her tongue as she may have in the past.  She had a number of frustrations and wanted to vent a little.

She started off by saying the government needed to get serious and engaged with the issues she had been dealing with.  She said that the various government bodies said all the right things, but nothing ever actually happened.  Be it the police, the local-body councils, central government, or the various government welfare agencies – they all talked a good fight and produced lovely discussion papers and reports, but never actually did anything or achieved concrete results.  She was upset that there was so much that could be done, but it needed government to get actively engaged. Government needed to DO something.

I sat there trying hard not to laugh.

She had got a lot of it right, and had recognised a lot of home truths – but hadn’t yet managed to close the loop and draw the whole thing together.  

Governments don’t DO for you.

Governments DO for themselves.

They are self-referencing institutions that serve themselves.

If you have swallowed the Koolaid, then more fool you.  If you still believe that government is there to govern “by the people, for the people” you are living in a fantasy.

When times get tough (you know, like now…) government won’t be there for you to lean on.  It Will Be Too Busy Leaning On You.

It’s first and last priority will be self-preservation.  And no price will be too high for that.  Your sacrifice will be its’ salvation and satisfaction.

And so the discomfort grows, on many levels and across the country.  The bitching and moaning has started.  And yet – most are still blind to the direction the real threat is coming from.

Without question government and politicians will attempt to direct that feeling so that various sectors of society will fight amongst themselves, blaming those other good-for-nothings for damaging “our” country, blah blah blah…

There will be just enough of a germ of truth in that sort of thing to excite our prejudices.  Classic FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt), as a deliberate, premeditated strategy.  Divide and conquer.

How many people will be able to put Two and Two together and get Four?  People are starting to ask questions, that’s good I guess.  But it is late in the day, and we have arguably already passed the point of no return.  I am afraid I don’t have much confidence that people will suddenly (or even gradually) see the light.  Giving up on old ideas and beliefs, and adopting new ones isn’t in our nature.  We would much rather ignorantly fight amongst ourselves.

But there are two inescapables in all this.

We won’t get away from our current dilemmas unscathed, we ARE going to get burned.

And – until we perceive that it is our systems(rules) and Rulers that have done for us, we will remain in the boiling pot getting cooked.

Another thought I had this last week on my trip North:

I have few doubts: the government will not manage to run its full term.

Things are getting tougher and going wrong at an accelerating pace.  A One-Seat coalition majority isn’t going to cut it.

The really smart politicians retired at the end of the last term. It was just the dumb ones that came back (into a developing storm) for more.

And these are the leaders to save us…???

I think not.

“Heeeey” she creeps while leaning forward on the counter, framing her boobs and batting her lashes, “can I have a Koolaid please?”

The poor sucker gives her a once over, “Sure. Here.”

She’s surprised that when she looks up from taking out her wallet, that he’s walking away. She stutters and stares after him.

As he heads to the back he calls over his shoulder:

“It’s on the house.”

We laugh. She surprised herself.
