Ablaye Cissoko & Volker Goetze at the Crossroads of Griot and Jazz

The African kora is an instrument that gently seduces you with it’s sound. Made from a large calabash gourd cut in half, it’s covered in cow hide and has a long poll protruding from it’s body that’s hung with 21 strings in 2 courses. It’s the traditional instrument of the African griot or storyteller. Ablaye Cissoko is from a family of griots in Senegal that goes back centuries.

Ablaye Cissoko: The kora is an instrument of the griots and it’s a heritage that’s transmitted from the father to the son.
Volker Goetze: His grand grand grand grand father, probably in the 1300s, created the kora and developed this instrument,  so he’s in a long line of people who developed this instrument

Volker Goetze is a German musician who plays trumpet with Ablaye Cissoko on the album, Sira. It’s not a pairing that immediately leaps to mind.

Volker Goetze: Yeah, the first reaction of people when I tell them I play trumpet with the kora, if they know what the kora is, they go “What? How can that work?”

But then they hear the music that Volker Goetze and Ablaye Cissoko recorded on  Sira and they understand.  When Volker Goetze met Cissoko a couple of years ago he was astounded by his extraordinary kora technique. Then he heard him singing.

Volker Goetze: At first he just played kora and didn’t sing and we were all astonished by his virtuosity and musicianship and three years later he started to sing and bring in his own tunes and we all cried.

Volker Goetze matches Cissoko in emotional nuance. He plays much of the music with a mute on his trumpet and flugelhorn which takes his brass instrument into the dynamic range of the kora. The two musicians sound like they grew up together in the Senegal plains as they converse on their instruments.

Ablaye Cissoko and Volker Goetze have a CD out called Sira on ObliqSound. On Monday’s Echoes, 11/30/09,  you can hear them playing live in what is one of the most beautiful concerts we’ve recorded this year. This has been an Echo Location, Soundings for New Music.

Echo Locations can be heard Wednesdays at 9:30 on WXPN, Philadelphia, Saturday mornings on WITF Harrisburg and on other public radio stations.

Igårkväll kom jag hem ifrån Kalmar, resan gick bra hem.. Men det var lite småtråkigt o sitta på en bus, fast på något sett var det ändå skönt att slippa få sitta bakom ratten o köra.. Bara tänka på att man ska gå av vid röätt hållplats..

FastTrack är ett välgjort och ganska roligt bilspel. Spelet går ut på att man ska köra sin bil på banor som utspelar sig i stadsmiljö. De varierar från att köra mitt i staden med höga hus som omger banan väldigt tätt med reklampelare till att man kör i den närliggande öknen. Mellan varje nivå så kan man köpa nya delar till sin bil som gör att den blir lite bättre. Pengar till det här tjänar man in genom att komma långt fram i de tidigare loppen. Grafiken i spelet är i toppklass och körkänslan än helt ok. Prova och se om du kan köra genom staden i hög hastighet.

Fast Track

Igår efter bandyn drog jag till Bastuträsk och jobbade.

Jag lånade Davids bil. Vägen dit gick bra, jag kände att det var halkigt men inte så farligt. När jag hade jobbat hela kvällen och äntligen skulle fara hem hade jag kört ungefär 2 kilometer innan jag kände att bakdelen på bilen började svänga lite.

Den svängde mer och mer och jag gjorde var jag kunde för att parera och när jag äntligen tänkte att det gick ju bra så gjorde det inte det. Då svängde den om en sista gång och jag insåg att jag skulle hamna i diket.

Men det gick så långsamt att jag bara sakta skjutsade ner i diket, men av nån anledning så var diket 1000 m djupt så jag blev ändå fast där nere.

Men jag hoppade ur den lutande bilen när det stannat och gick upp på vägen. När jag varit där en stund kom en taxi som stannade. Jag fick åka med honom till Bastuträsk igen och där väntade jag på Willy som fick komma och hämta mig.

Idag har jag och Willy kört dit igen och fixat upp bilen med hjälp av en traktor.

Jag försökte förklara nått men jag vet inte hur det gick eller vad det var.

Willy agerade kameraman och fick smaka på det kalla jobbet som fotograf..

Sen var det bara att börja backa..

Och plötsligt var jag på vägen igen.

Nu är jag hemma och har fotot volleyboll.

David för han fick inte panik när jag ringde och sa att jag kraschat hans bil mitt i natten. Inte ens när Willy hjälpte till att fortsätta ljuga om det fick han panik.

Sim Taxi 2 är ett roligt bilspel där man spelar en taxichaufför som åker runt i en stad och hämtar passagerare och sedan kör de till rätt adress. För att få fortsätta med ditt jobb så gäller det att köra in en viss summa pengar varje dag, skulle man inte klara det så får man sparken. Grafiken i spelet är riktigt bra och passar bra i spelet med sin lite serieliknande grafik. Pengar tjänar men genom att köra passageraren snabbt till rätt ställe, tar man för lång tid på sig så får man mindre betalt( tvärtom mot i verkligheten alltså). Ett litet problem i spelet är att man kär på vänster sida av vägen vilket är lite svårt att vänja sig till. Dessutom så gäller det att inte krocka för mycket och hålla reda på hur mycket bensin som man har kvar i tanken.

Blue Harbor Boat Parking är ett spel där man ska parkera båtar på kort tid. Man får en båt vid infarten till marinan och ska sedan parkera den på ägarens plats utan att köra in i nånting. Lyckas man så får man några fler sekunder på sig att spela. Klarar man en bår så kommer det snabbt en båt till som vill bli parkerad. Grafiken i spelet är ganska passande och känns lagom för den här typen av spel. Själva styrningen är ganska enkel för att köra en båt och inte svår att lära sig. Testa och se hur många båtar du hinner att parkera innan tiden tar slut.

London Evening Standard/Nick Curtis—By chance, actors Virginia McKenna and her husband Ben Travers visited Sophisticat one day. They had played conservationists Joy and George Adamson in Born Free, the film about a lion, Elsa, who was returned to the wild. With the two Australians’ enthusiastic approval, McKenna asked George Adamson if he could do the same for Christian.

In August 1970, Rendall and Bourke flew with Christian to Adamson’s Kora nature reserve in Kenya, where he was gradually introduced to the wild. Despite his swanky Chelsea upbringing, he adapted well, eventually severing all ties with Adamson and Kora, mating with wild lions and disappearing to establish his own territory. In the YouTube footage from 1971 he is caught in a halfway stage, already comfortable with other lions but delighted that his old human friends have come to visit. “People assume we were scared but we could see the love and affection in Christian’s face,” says Bourke of their ecstatic reunion.

The massive online popularity of the clip has taken the men agreeably by surprise and led them to revise and reissue their excellent 1971 book, A Lion Called Christian. Owning Christian left both of them with an interest in conservation, Rendall professionally and Bourke as a sideline to his career as an art curator. Rendall hopes those viewing the clip will be prompted to take a greater interest in the world’s ecological balance. “The number of lions today is a third of what it was when we bought Christian,” he says. “That alone tells you something’s wrong.“

2. Jag monterade isär gabbis byrålåda som bakisgabbis hade hamrat ihop hel fel.

Om jag äter lite mer makaroner med ketchup kommer jag säkert sova jättegott inatt.

these are some kiwis i was recently introduced to. there’s a lot more to the place than sheep, bungee jumping, and bret and jemaine (although, they deserve an honorable mention). good chill out vibes (bean bags, that sort of thing…). very easy listening with some funky reggae feel. kick back, crack a brew, and absorb the last bits of sunshine.  Six60, Kora, and Fat Freddy’s Drop. kiwis just have an intoxicating influence that will take you over..

Aku dan adikku Ringga, suka sekali menonton serial korea dan taiwan, Ya Asian Series gitu. Entah berapa banyak koleksi kami di rumah. Mungkin karena jarang menonton sinetron kami lebih memilih nonton dvd Asia yang lebih menghibur. Hm, okay bukan hanya menghibur tentunya, kadang banyak pelajaran yang bisa diambil ketika menontonnya.

Karakter-karakter yang dimainkan sangat mengena, misalnya untuk peran antagonis tidak selalu sejahat seperti di sinetron sampai mata bisa membelalak, dan peran protagonis yang tidak selalu sempurna baiknya. Selain itu tentunya wajah-wajah cowok dan cewek asia yang sangat menarik membuat mata kita bertahan menonton serial tersebut bahkan sampai pagi. Bukannya ga cinta dengan sinteron Indonesia, tapi terus terang untuk yang satu ini aku angkat tangan. Serial Asia masih merajai bahkan mungkin ditiru sinteron lokal.

Serial-serial di atas ada yang serial Korea dan Taiwan di atas bukanlah serial baru, tetapi serial-serial sepanjang masa yang sampai sekarang masih diingat dan masih enak ditonton berkali. Belum lagi cerita-cerita yang sedih menyayat hati sampai menangis tersedu-sedu. Entah kenapa kalau nonton serial asia ini bikin aku ga sabaran untuk menyelesaikan sampai habis, padahal bisa sampai 24 episode. cinta deeeh.

NB: bocoran nih, katanya Full House bakal ada sambungannya jadi Full House 2. Belum konfirm pemain sih, tapi berharap tetep Rain dan Song Hye Kyo ya… amiiin

Résumé – Le piégeage photographique du lynx (Lynx lynx) a été effectué durant 60 nuits, du 22 janvier au 23 mars 2009, en Suisse centrale Ouest. Trente-huits sites ont été surveillés à l’aide de paires de pièges-photographiques afin de photographier les deux flancs des lynx pour permettre une identification individuelle de manière certaine. Six lynx indépendants différents ont été détectés sur des passages dans l’ensemble de la zone d’étude au cours des deux mois d’échantillonnage. L’estimation de l’abondance par le modèle de capture-recapture M0 était de 6,0 ± 0,37 lynx indépendants ce qui correspond à une densité de 0,85 ± 0,05 lynx indépendants pour 100 km2. La densité est restée identique à celle mesurée durant l’hiver 2006/07.

Già in precedenza su questo blog sono apparsi video apparentemente “non letterari”. E’ il caso dei fumisterie o degli smile carucci, ad esempio, ma sempre video legati a noi. Dunque, per chi non lo sapesse, la Candela ha da poco (settembre) iniziato a studiare questo strumento, la Kora, un “arpa africana”, per dirla alla spicciola. Uno strumento sicuramente fantastico e misterioso, quanto straordinario. Ecco dunque, che nell’attesa di novità, navigando su questo blog, potete vedere ed ascoltare Madya Diabete, un illustre rappresentate di questo strumento e di tutta una cultura assai affascinante. In giro troverete altri video, noi come al solito rimandiamo ai link ufficiali, come il myspace di Madya oppure il T.P Africa (già apparso fra i nostri link). Die Whitsundays waren nach Fraser Island das zweite Sahnestück im bereits umschwärmten Wicked Travel bzw. Koala Paket. Doch wenn jemand, wie Dina, an Seekrankheit leidet und nicht auf einem Boot nächtigen kann, dann hat man leider keine andere Option als mit der “Pride of Airlie”, welches in Koala-Besitz ist, in See zu stechen. Dieses ist nämlich das einzige Boot, das über Nacht anlegt und die Passagiere sich einen Nachtschlaf auf Land gönnen können. Wir hatten also drei Tage Segeltörn auf besagtem Boot gebucht. Bekommen haben wir dann weniger als 48 Stunden auf einem motorbetriebenen Katamaran namens “Kora”. Wir hoffen nun inständig, dass es wenigstens die Whistunday Inseln waren und nicht ein schäbiges Archipel aus dem China, die kopieren ja heutzutage alles.

Klingt erst mal wieder ziemlich ernüchternd, doch es war alles gar nicht so übel. Die “Pride of Airlie” ist nämlich als Partyboot berüchtigt, wo sich bis zu 60 Passagiere gern mal drei ganze Tage glatt machen, anstatt mal von Bord zu gehen und mit Maske und Schnorchel die Unterwasserwelt zu erkunden. Wir hatten es mit dem kleineren Katamaran “Kora” also nicht so schlecht getroffen und auch die etwa 25 anderen Gäste waren nicht auf 100% Vollgas gepolt, sondern recht entspannt. Es gab aber trotzdem Kühlboxen mit viel Eis, wo das mitgebrachte Bier und der Bundy-Rum-Cola kalt gehalten wurden.

Tagsüber war also schnorcheln an verschiedenen Riffkanten des Great Barrier Reefs angesagt. Unterwegs wedelten uns vorbeiziehende Buckelwale mit ihren mächtigen Flossen zu, nur Delphine machten sich rar. Dafür gab’s dann unter Wasser eine Menge bunter Fische, Meeresschildkröten und sogar ein Rochen schwamm gemächlich an dämlich aussehenden Touristen vorbei. Denn wir wurden dazu verdonnert ein wunderschönes Ganzkörperkondom zu tragen, den sogenannten Stinger Suit. Eigentlich ist erst ab November Würfelquallensaison, doch angeblich wurde vor kurzem jemand gestochen und dann gibt’s ein schönes Nervengift mit muskellähmender Wirkung. Die Aussicht auf einen hässlichen Tod (auch nicht auf schönen Tod) fällt dann sicher nicht in die Kategorie “Mein schönstes Ferienerlebnis”. Alle zusammen sahen wir aus wie bei einem Casting für den neuen Star-Trek-Film oder einen 70er Jahre Porno. Aber hilft ja nicht und es sahen ja wenigstens alle Scheiße aus.

Das Koala Ressort auf der Koala Adventure Insel, die eigentlich South Molle Island heißt, war auch nicht so schlecht und dreckig wie erwartet. Naja aber wenigstens das Essen erfüllte die Erwartungen. Das war schlecht aber dafür wenigstens zu wenig. Vielleicht hätte man mal einen der etwas größeren Fledermausfische, die sich an der Mole tummelten, in die Pfanne hauen können. Naja. Auf der Insel gab es dann noch im Licht, der im Wasser ertrinkenden Sonne, einen kleinen Ausflug zu einem Aussichtspunkt, der die Fülle der Inselwelt der Whitsundays erahnen ließ und einen herrlichen Blick auf die Bucht eröffnete.

Ja und wo Inseln sind, da gibt es in der Regel Strand. Und wo Strand, da auch meistens Sand. Der schneeweiße Sand am Whitehaven Beach besteht zu 97% aus Silikat und ist damit so fein, dass man daraus sogar Teleskope herstellt. Die Kulisse des wohl berühmtesten Strandes der Whitsundays geht natürlich gern auch ordinär als Photohintergrund. Das war optisch schon ganz nett, sowohl über als auch unter der Wasseroberfläche. Und wenn man denkt, dass dort alles schön piano auf See war, der sieht sich getäuscht, denn es gab auch wieder gut Seegang und Dina was not amused.

Ja und nach drei Tagen, also eigentlich ja weniger als 48 Stunden, war es dann auch schon wieder vorbei mit Katamaran fahren, schnorcheln und am Strand herumlungern. Für seetüchtigere Leute bleibt zu empfehlen, als Crewmitglied auf einem der zahlreichen Ausflugsschiffe anzuheuern und so ein paar Tage auf einem richtigen Segelboot zu verweilen. Dann schwankt es in den Beinen auch viel mehr, wenn man wieder an Land ist und man wird vielleicht für einen Betrunkenen gehalten. Oder für einen Australier, denn hier werden schöne T-Shirts verkauft mit Sprüchen wie “I’m not drunk, I’m Australian!”.

HeatRush är ett riktigt bra litet bilspel där man ska kör en bil längs långa slingrande bägar med mycket annan trafik som oftast är i vägen. Spelet påminner en hel del om det klassiska spelet Outrun som var mycket populärt på 80-talet som arkadversion. Liksom i Outrun så ska man här köra en bil så man hinner komma fram till målet på varje sträcka. Hinner man fram så får man välja på att köra till höger eller vänster och på så sätt välja vilken vägsträcka som man vill köra härnäst. Totalt så kan man köra fem sträckor innan man når huvudmålet men tack vare att man kan köra åt olika håll så an man köra på 15 olika vägar.

“You won’t believe your feet”

With musicians from three different continents it is hardly surprising that Baraka’s musical influences reach around the globe as they skillfully blend music from West African Highlife and South African Township with Caribbean Calypso, Soca and Reggae to produce a unique and exciting mix of polyphonic rhythms, soaring melodies and funky dance grooves.

After headling at Nyodema’s Festival in 2008, they were such a hit with the audience that when Baraka asked to return the following year we couldn’t resist inviting them back to the festival in 2009. This year kora player and percussionist, Mamadou Cissoko, joined them on stage adding even greater depth and energy to their wonderful music.

Their line-up includes Ben Baddoo on vocals, percussion and balafon. Ben started drumming with his older brothers when he was six in his home village of Nsakina in Ghana.  At 17 he joined a professional drum and dance troupe and went on to form his own group, Sankofa, with whom he toured all over Ghana. In the 1980’s, after being discovered by a UK promoter, they became one of the first exponents of African drum and dance in the UK.  Ben is now a highly respected session player, having worked with artists as diverse as Vangellis, Peter Gabriel and more recently Temple of Sound. He is also well known for his drum and dance workshops, which he has held in festivals around the world as well as in UK schools and colleges.  A solo drum track that he recorded for the Womad Talking Book CD is now part of the UK Schools curriculum.

Baraka’s drummer, Mark Bradley, was born in Belfast and his first taste of music was drumming in punk bands as a teenager. He has lived in the UK for 20 years and has played (and still does) with numerous bands covering a wide variety of musical genres.

Royston Gage on bass guitar and vocals brings the sounds of  The Caribbean to the group having played with soca and reggae bands in his homeland of the Commonwealth of Dominica before moving to the UK.  Other early musical experiences include hanging out with Led Zeppelin when they used his band’s rehearsal room on the island!

Saxophonist, Brendan Whitmore comes from Carlow, Eire. He discovered world music through reggae, having been a founder member of Bristol’s first and foremost reggae band Talisman with whom he has enjoyed numerous  TV appearances, chart success and played on the same stage as the Rolling Stones.

Daniel Isakongo, from The Congo,  was a welcome addition to the band last year adding his unique brand of funky guitar and vocals.

Mamadou

Senegalese Kora player, Mamadou Cissoko, spends much of his time running workshops and story telling as a solo artist. He doesn’t usually play with a band but he particularly likes Baraka’s music and ethics so when available he’s only too happy to join Baraka as a guest artist.

With such a wealth of experience to draw on it is no wonder that they are now delighting audiences the length and breadth of Britain, as well as mainland Europe and Ireland with their exciting blend of world music.

Space Race är ett ganska skoj litet racingspel där man ska tävla med ett rymdskepp mot andra rymdskepp som körs av datorn. Man kan välja på att köra med olika rymdskepp som alla har lite olika egenskaper när det gäller toppfart och styrförmåga. Det finns många roliga banor att köra på och man kan välja mellan att köra ett enda race eller en turnering som består av tre tävlingar. I spelet så kan man plocka upp olika vapen att använda sig av. Det kan vara missiler, minor eller andra saker som gynnar dig.

Space Race

Choo Choo är ett roligt spel där man ska köra ett tåg som ska utföra olika uppdrag i fiende land. Man ska åka och plocka upp olika saker och sedan ta sig ut. De första nivåerna är ganska enkla att klara av men det blir snabbt svårare. Man ska också skjuta på fiender samtidigt som man kör sitt lok. Ibland kommer det tanks som är lite svårare att skjuta ner. I spelet finns det många växlar som man ska ställa in på rätt sätt så att man åker åt rätt håll, det kan vara lite förvillande när man märker att man bara åker runt runt. Spelet har en bra grafik och ljud och är ett riktigt bra spel.

Choo Choo

Idag har jag varit på vuxenskolan och snackat lite med folk där om lite jobb som jag ska få där, jag kommer att få jobba en del med grupper med flyktingar och ha olika aktiviteter med dom så det känns riktigt nice.

Sen har jag varit en sväng till farsan och jobbat lite i skogen.

Fram mot kvällen åkte jag in till Norsjö igen för att träna boxning som gick bra faktiskt, mitt första blåmärke under ögat har nu fått en kompis under andra ögat så det slipper va ensamt.

Nu är ju min lilla kamera inte så mycket att åka med men det syns i alla fall ganska bra.

Men nu ska jag inte sitta här så länge utan jag har lovat farsan att komma tillbaka ikväll så vi kan fortsätta jobba imorgon.
