5 Reasons Music Used To Be Better

“this isn’t music” “now the stuff in my day, THAT was music”. Sentences which are heard all too often, but is their any truth to it? Kinda, but not definatly. Here today i will list 5 reasons why it is true, and tomorrow will show some stuff from the opposing viewpoint.

1 QYFB (Quit Your Fucking Bitching)

At some point, (i blame nirvana) it became fashionable for musicians to spend their time just constantly compaining about their lives. Was fine for a while, but eventually you began to think “bollocks” it all became ridiculous beyond self-parody; ending up with record labels putting together good looking bands and having them complain about their uglyness. Well fuck that. Bare in mind though; i do love nirvana, and Brand New

It used to be that if you liked a band or genre of music, you instantly seemed to belong to a society, giving you a sense of purpose and belonging. This would lead to increased self-confidence and more success in life. Nowadays this has all but disappeared (bar Amanda Palmer and 30STM of course), everybody seems to listen to everything. Apart from gigs, music is not something which allows you to feel part of a community any more, not on it’s own anyway. It has to be added to other things as well. Yes, a lot of the communities were self serving dicks, and maybe this is just nostalgia, but still…

3. I heard it on the wireless back in ‘52, then read the countless interviews the day after

There’s far too much bullshit this day with musicians in relation to the media. It seems like everything you read about bands has gone through about 5 press officers beforehand, musicians are starting to believe their own hype. Which allows them to spend millions producing awful albums (i’m looking your way Axl and Korn) because they know that people will follow them no matter what.

4. Work Ethic? We don’t need no stinking work ethic!

Guns and Roses took over a decade to make an album. Most bands seem to take far too long making an album. They have to run it past the managers, the label, then a test group. It’s taking too long; just let them make an album and release it. Secondly, there’s not many long-lasting artists. Long gone are the days where people would release well over 10 albums in their career, now it’s just “release 2 albums, if you don’t reach top 10 with both; you’re history” which doesn’t give people an opportunity to develop as an artist. In this current climate, the chili peppers wouldn’t be successful; as they were shit until their 3rd album. But it was fine; they were kept on contract and allowed to develop and grew, and turned into one of the worlds biggest bands.

My guitarist asked me to set him up with a CD with a couple of albums on it. What’s troublesome for me is that I only have DVD-Rs, which means that I’ve got something stupid like 3Gigs of free space left. I never feel right leaving so much blank space on any medium. So what the hell am I supposed to fill the rest of this empty disc space with? It’d be easy to use Cusack’s guide from High Fidelity but that aint right. So now I’m digging through all of my media, not just my music to find something, anything, to put on this damn disc. Toto’s Dune soundtrack? Why not? Gustav Holst’s Planets suite? Sure! How about Has Been? Absolutely.

I mean how does a theory for composing mix tapes hold up in the digital age of music? I know there are audiophiles our there who still insist on mixing, mastering and purchasing music on vinyl. And that’s cool! Analog has many benefits. Sadly I’m in a bit of a situation here, with this digital medium business. I suppose I could just close my eyes and randomly copy and paste whatever happens to be under the cursor at that moment.

I suppose I have the same problem when I make playlists for my Zune, though I do always end up skipping from metal to electronica to jazz in the span of a few songs. That kind of musical ADD only really appeals to me, and even then only on long drives where no one can hear me sing harder, better, faster, stronger.

Tomorrow is cleaning day at the jamspace and I expect to find six more couches and perhaps seven or eight more musical instruments. The last time we did this we unearthed a cowbell and a fender bass that had a “Follow the Leader” sticker on it. Boyn!

As much as I do hate cleaning, I always find hilarious stuff that I’ve completely forgotten about. This always keeps the good memories flowing into the front of my mind. Maybe we’ll even reorganize for better acoustics! Perhaps we’ll finally be able to set up a Nintendo 64 for when the tedium gets to be too much, perchance to dream…

Am 5. Dezember ist es soweit. Das Musikhaus Korn expandiert nach Dresden in die schöne Neustadt und eröffnet dort eine neue Filiale. Gelegen in der Rothenburger Str. 7 wollen wir uns direkt an den Puls der Szene setzen und in Zukunft hochwertige Musikinstrumente, angesagtes Deejayequipment und kraftvolle Anlagen präsentieren.

Wir freuen uns sehr auf die Eröffnung am Samstag, den 5.12.. Ab 10 Uhr kann man den Laden erleben und sich auf Gespräche an Machern, Musikern und Freunden einstellen. Die eine oder andere Überraschung ist geplant, damit der Musikshop in Dresden einen gebührenden Einstand erlebt. Music> Plein de découvertes ce mois ci, quelques groupes en vrac : Korn (oui oui, sérieusement, allez écouter la ligne de basse de Got The Life !), Birdy Nam Nam, Amon Amarth (bon c’est de la triche, je connaissais déjà, mais j’ai pris le temps de tout écouter …alors ça compte)…et des redécouvertes en tout genre ! !

Event> La fin du projet de gestion fi…euh non pardon. L’event du mois est bien sûr le concert de mes amis de devianz demain au Pub ADK ! (Ceci dit, pour ceux qui ont vu Sydbreed et In Flames, à ce qui paraît c’était bien). Oh, et puis le deuxième meeting CP !

TV> Father Ted ! Série évidemment venue du R.U. qui me fait allègrement penser à The Vicar Of Dibley, en version homme et irlandaise.

Movie> The Hangover (séance de rattrapage). Verdict : c’est niais, complètement wtf. Je dois dire que j’ai bien aimé.

Game> Pas eu le temps. Mais on a pas mal joué avec mes nerfs, je suis sûre que ça compte.

Book-Magazine> Queen Victoria : Demon Hunter, du Jane Austen (le vrai ce coup ci), le deuxième tome des Aigles de Rome, et des bouquins sur la sécurité sociale.

Sport> Deux séances de footing nocturnes. C’est ça le vrai masochisme héroïsme !

Boy> Toujours une question terrible ça, je dirais … Fieldy, de son vrai nom Reginald Arvizu, mais c’est moins glamour.

Mallcore Problem in Myanmar

I searched online for Myanmar metal stuff last night and found a forum. With great expectations, I clicked on the link.

What I found?

They were talking about… nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.

Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-

Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.

EVERYTHING HERE IS JUST NU-METAL AND METALCORE????????????

Why can’t they just get out of this whole mallcore thing??? Why won’t they step deeper into the depths? WHY?????

There were even some people who said,”Slipknot is Death Metal”. Ya, go die. It pisses me off when I hear people saying crap like that.

Mallcore, Nu-metal, Metalcore, BFMV, A7X, Marilyn Manson, BMTH, blah blah blah and it goes on and on and on in a never finishing mallcore whirlpool. This is what’s happening in Myanmar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C’est donc après ce jeu de mot facile à faire que vous savez de quel groupe je vais parler ! Aller, avouez, vous les croyez fini, HS, kaput, dead, bang bang(oui on peut continuer longtemps comme ça !)les néo-métalleux de Korn(moi la première) ? Et bien détrompez-vous !

Aller, retour en arrière !

Korn est considéré, avec les Deftones, comme groupe “fondateur” d’un nouveau genre, le néo métal. Groupe originaire de Bakersfield, Jonathan Davis, James ‘Munky‘ Shaffer, Reginald ‘Fieldy‘ Arvizu, Brian ‘Head‘ Welch et David Silveria fondent Korn en 1993. Le nom du groupe a effectivement un rapport avec le maïs mais …. enfin bon bref, c’est Jonathan Davis, chanteur du groupe, qui en trouve le nom. En 1994 sort leur premier album avec un nom des plus difficiles à retenir : Korn. Et la première chanson ‘Blind‘ a pour première phrase “Are you ready?”. Le cd se vendant assez bien, ils font les premières parties de grands groupes. Korn enchaine en 1996 avec Life is peachy et Follow The Leader en 1998. Korn fais ressentir ses influences Hip-hop a partir de ce dernier. En 1999, on nous balance Issue puis Untouchable en 2002 et Take a look in the mirror en 2003. Et jusque là, Korn c’était … original ! Les textes parlent souvent de l’enfance peu commune de Jonathan Davis et dans la façon de chanter, il a une façon bien à lui de le faire sur certains passages : les borborygmes ! What is it ? En gros, ça consiste a vouloir dire des mots sans réellement les prononcer ! Bizarre ? Peut-être, en tout cas ‘Twist‘ est entièrement faites dans ce genre. En 2004 sort Greatest Hits vol.1, un best-of ( nan, sans dèc’ ?!) qui marque les 10 ans du groupe. On y retrouve notamment 2 reprises ‘Kornisées‘ qui ouvrent le cd : ‘Word up‘ de Cameo et le célèbre ‘ Another brick in the wall’ de(on ne les présente plus!)Pink Floyd. En 2005 sort See you on the other side. Et là, les carottes sont cuites ! Korn nous sort des mélodies qui ont perdu leurs agressivitées à la limite du pseudo-electro ! Et les paroles, vaut mieux pas les traduires ! De plus, ils doivent faire face au départ de Head. Korn perd de son prestige. Alors oui, faut changer de temps en temps … mais faut savoir le faire ! En 2007, sort Untitled. Ils reprennent légèrement du poil de la bête malgré le départ de David cette fois-ci. Le style est différent, là aussi, de ce qu’ils avaient pu faire, mais toujours dans la mouvance See you on the other side. Et pourtant même si c’est ça casse pas encore trois pattes à un canard, on y accroche déjà plus qu’au cd précédent ! Mais on voudrais teeeeellement retrouvé ce côté ‘psychotique’ des chansons telles que ‘Make me bad‘ou ’Trash’.

Et sinon, Korn a participé au Family Values Tour en 1998 avec Rammstein(tient tient tient …), Ice Cube, Limp Bizkit …. Chaque pochette de cd met en scène un enfant(sauf Issue où il s’agit d’une poupée mais rapport quand même à l’enfance). Le son particulier de Korn(avant le best-of) vient du fait qu’il s’agit d’une basse à 5 cordes, et de guitares à 7 cordes.

Bref, tout ce blabla(utile ou non)pour vous dire l’annonce tombée récemment : Korn est en studio pour enregistrer un nouvel album et qui selon Fieldy serait un retour au tout début, avec Ray Luzier comme remplaçant de David. Va-t-on le retrouvé ce côté ‘ça me prend l’esprit’ ? A voir NORMALEMENT(ouai parce que bizarrement en ce moment les cds ne sortent jamais le jour prévu mais plutôt 15 jours voire 1 mois après)en 2010 ! Suspense, …

Una nuova canzone per Chi Cheng

Se avete familiarità con il disco “Life Is Peachy” dei Korn (1996) saprete che, dopo quella breve e schizofrenica intro di nome Twist, parte un pezzo alquanto devastante intitolato Chi. Il brano prende il nome da Chi Cheng, grande amico della band di Bakersfield, oltre che poeta e soprattutto bassista storico dei Deftones, altrettanto nota formazione californiana che insieme ai Korn è stata tra i pionieri del fortunatissimo genere nu metal. Tredici anni dopo, Fieldy dei Korn si è reso promotore e produttore, insieme a Q-Unique degli StillWell, di un secondo brano legato all’amico bassista: A Song for Chi. Si tratta di un brano strumentale composto e inciso progressivamente con il contributo di membri di Korn, Slipknot, Metallica, Machine Head, Disturbed, P.O.D., Sevendust, Hatebreed e Killswitch Engage, scaricabile gratuitamente sull’apposito sito internet, dove è anche possibile guardare il videoclip girato per l’occasione ed effettuare donazioni a favore della famiglia di Chi.

Chi Cheng, 39 anni, è entrato in coma il 4 novembre 2008 a seguito di un grave incidente automobilistico. Ancora oggi, a oltre un anno di distanza, si trova in stato minimamente cosciente e, dopo essere stato ricoverato a lungo in una clinica specializzata nel nord della California, da un paio di mesi è ritornato a casa, dove pare stia facendo qualche piccolo ma significativo progresso. Il sistema sanitario americano, come sappiamo, non è particolarmente efficiente, e dalla metà di gennaio l’assicurazione di Chi ha smesso di pagare per le sue spese mediche. Una persona vicina alla famiglia del musicista ha deciso di aprire un apposito sito internet, chiamato “One Love for Chi”, allo scopo di raccogliere fondi per contribuire alle ingenti spese: finora si sono raggiunti risultati sorprendenti, con delle offerte che hanno superato i 77mila dollari.

Questa sera e domani i Deftones suoneranno due concerti di beneficenza a favore di Chi all’Avalon di Hollywood, accompagnati dal bassista Sergio Vega (già nelle file dei Quicksand). Quale migliore occasione per rivolgere al bassista californiano un augurio di pronta guarigione, e proporvi il suggestivo videoclip di uno dei brani più splendidi della band di Sacramento. A presto, Chi.

Lo que nos presentan Flyleaf en este segundo disco es un paso lógico. Sin sorpresas. Durante el tiempo que duró la larguísima y productiva promoción de su álbum debut (al margen de Passerby, nombre bajo el que editaron aquel disco raro), coquetearon con un metal en la onda de los últimos KoRn (que los trajeron por Europa, para mi goce y disfrute personal), y esa otra rama teen con regustillo a los hostiables de Simple Plan. Ahora, cuatro años después de que aquella rabieta loca de tema I’m so Sick nos hiciera exclamar a más de uno “hostia, !¿y esto?!”, mis cristianillos tejanos favoritos han regresado con un puñado de temas que ponen en evidencia esa dualidad tan presente en sus directos de los últimos años: Flyleaf pueden sonar evidentemente encabronados, o absurdamente melosos, y a veces en el mismo tema.

Y así, en Memento Mori podemos distinguir un par de vertientes claras: por un lado los temas más contundentes, con riffs de guitarra directos y una linea de bajo muy pesada y definida (de este lado caen Beautiful Bride, Again, Chasm, The Kind, In the Dark y Swept Away), y cerca y a veces diluído con lo anterior, la segunda faceta de Mosley y los suyos: canciones de melodías más dulces y que encajan a las mil maravillas en la clásica radiofórmula norteamericana (This Close, Set Apart this Dream, Treasure, Arise), con reminiscencias más que evidentes al exitoso single All Around me, que tantos éxitos les hizo cosechar hace dos años, y que no necesariamente tienen que ser temas malos (de hecho, considero que sólo uno de los cuatro que he mencionado merecería el suspenso).

Al margen del estilo de los temas, hay que destacar que, en general, las melodías son más complejas que en el disco anterior, y que hay un gran trabajo en cuanto a la armonía en varios de los temas (concretamente en algunas partes de Chasm, This Close y Swept Away), con movimientos disonantes y acordes que uno no esperaría encontrarse en un grupo que casi por definición uno tomaría por simple y del montón.

Al final nos queda un disco condenadamente adictivo, aunque dudo que aguante el tirón del anterior, que alcanzó records de permanencia en listas de ventas (recordemos que editaron casi todos los temas como singles, y la mayoría con videoclip), pero que aguantará vivo muchos meses, al menos en mi mp3.

PD: Deberían vender peluches de Lacey Mosley. Es tan adorable… ^^

Habar n-am care a fost prima trupa ce a venit cu ideea de a-i aduce un omagiu lui Arnold, din ce stiu a fost Goretorture. Important este daca oamenii chiar se bucura de aceasta muzica. Nu am postat acest mesaj degeaba, recent am primit o scrisoare din partea unui fan. Va rog sa-mi spuneti ce as putea face.’

‘Traiesc in Nebraska la o ferma, unde avem foarte mult porumb. De aici a pornit dragostea mea pentru porumb apoi l-am gasit si in muzica, adica in Korn. Acum a aparut o noua trupa Schwarzenator, fondata de chitaristul Korn. Domnule Lambesis, Austrian Death Machine nu se compara cu Schwarzenator!

Muzica Schwarzenator este incredibila, umorul este subtil si din toate punctele de vedere, reprezinta o forta distructiva. Spre deosebire de Austrian Death Machine! Lambesis vei fi distrus!

#193 – Korn – “Freak on a Leash” – (1998)

I’d argue that Issues was a better album than Follow the Leader and that “Falling Away From Me” might be a better song, but, the video for “Freak On A Leash” is one of the best of the 90s and it used the whole “bullet-time” thing before The Matrix. Plus, Jonathan Davis freaking-out-like-a-metal-version-of-Cab-Calloway’s-classic-scatting is just awesome.
