korpiklaani

Einen außergewöhnlich langsamen, nichtsdestotrotz schönen Titel hat die finnische Folk Metal-Band Korpiklaani (etwa: Klan des Waldes) mit “Gods On Fire” produziert.

Ihre allgemein sehr naturbezogenen und daher auch musikalisch volkstümlich orientierten Titel (im festen Line-up finden sich neben 2 Gitarren, Drums und Bass auch das Akkordeon, die Violine, eine Flöte, der Dudelsack oder das Jouhikko), handeln von z.B. der Bärenjagd (der Albenname “Korven Kuningas” bedeutet King of the Wilderness, also etwa König der Wildnis). Ihre Texte sind etwa zu gleichen Anteilen finnisch und englisch, manchmal auch gemischt. Hier geht es um die Umwelt und den Umgang der Menschen mit ihr:

Ihre Kritik am Menschen bzw. dessen Umgang mit der Natur wird in folgenden Zeilen deutlich:

Auf dem älteren Album “Tervaskanto” von 2007 findet sich der Titel “Palovana” (This song is about the inner flame, which burns inside us all and allows us to do whatever we desire. It is also connected to the ancient Finnish shadow soul, ihte, which was believed to burn like a flame as well; wir würden einfach freier Wille sagen). Die Texte sind oft aus der Ich-Perspektive geschrieben, da der Mensch im schamanistischen Glauben (die Band selbst hieß bis 2003 Shaman) selbst zu dem gerufenen Element wird. Da der Titel auf finnisch ist, hier die Übersetzung.

The waters will evaporate when I get wet

Folk metallers Korpiklaani have announced a U.S. headlining tour to kick-off the new year. The Finnish act will be supported by Swashbuckle, TYR, and White Wizzard. The bands will be playing 23 shows in 24 days. Lets hope their livers are ready.

East of Ealing at Bearded Theory Benefit gig SEP 26 City Club, Guildford

East of Ealing play a fun mix of roots rock fused with traditional brick built and foundry forged foundation folk.

Folk songs are commonly regarded as the songs that express something about a lifestyle that existed in the past or is about to disappear- but that sense of the melancholy does not dominate the music of EoE. Instead, their songs are a lot of fun and puns are in abundance, with musical interludes sometimes surprising the audience when they rise up without warning, like the musical equivalent of Pop-Tarts.

The band also remembers that traditional folk music is an experience shared across the world. So, like Druhá Trava or Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, East of Ealing provides lessons aplenty on the subject of how folk music has evolved into what we now consider to be popular music and how the traditions have merged, emerged and altered into the various distorted forms we now recognise, along the way.

They provide some interesting and unexpected variations, along this tortuous path, and their shared sense of fun is welcome, as is their undeniable virtuosity.

For example, in an imaginative and fun song ‘the Great Unknown’, Moorish influences prevail, but the melody just puffs along like a ska number with Balkan folk flourishes. And for those who did not know that punk rock is a direct descendant of folk music (and I’m not kidding) East of Ealing provides plenty of references to this musical criss-  crossing from the reels, hornpipes and jigs of pure folk to the analytical and sparse punk melodies that can be heard in work by the early Pogues, and even The Clash

Along the way, there’s plenty of fun in the East of Ealing musical repertoire, with puns a-plenty and twinkle in-the-eye tongue-in-cheek antics, as we try to keep pace with the myriad of tiny musical one-liners and punch lines. But the substance of East of Ealing is dances, jigs and general merry-making. And the crowd at the City Club Guildford responded to the music with a hearty gusto …. reeling, jumping and dancing into the warm evening air.

There are large portions of Eastern European sounds in the EoE tunes-  in particular in the single ‘Black Ship’, and these sounds cross-over to more traditional Romany music and then back to punk rock, like other brands of rebel music similar in style and heart to that of Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa. Pre-Raphaelite beauty Stephanie Graffiti squeezes out some amazing sounds from her electric violin-  from Pink Floyd-esque ‘synth’ lushness all the way through to Led Zeppelin-style screeching ‘guitar’ breaks.

Jim Bean provides most of the voice and the looks (if the whole Pirate Shipmate look is your bag, baby), with a neckerchief, hearty hat and superficial smile. He plays a beautiful acoustic bass and also employs, at times, an electric squeeze-box to give the sounds more depth of image. Paul Castleman on drums, cannot be ignored. Paul is a talented drummer with a superb sense of the mischievous. Mik P plays the electric and acoustic guitars and often provides the kind of rawness and energy that lifts East Of Ealing from their trad-folk roots and prods, pushes and squeezes their sounds towards more lofty rock horizons.

East of Ealing are folksters tinged with rocker irony like ‘The Knitters’  and rockers mixed with folksy irony like ‘Korpiklaani’. I like that.  Get up and dance. Are we there yet?

right now i’m in a kind of english-mood. it’s really boring to write everyday about the same things in german, so i thought, why not trying it in english?

my mother (god bless her) is cooking a nice beef and vegetable soup for me, so i can have tomorrow a nice lunch without getting bothered by my pancreas. i’m still not in the mood of having an operation on friday but what has to be done has to be done.

right now i really enjoy staying at my parent’s and it is so great to be taken care of. i love my independent life, i really do, but sometimes it’s easier (especially when i’m sick) to stay with my family. i have a nice couch with a flat screen in front of me – we’ve still fatscreens at home – and i can use my notebook with wireless lan. that’s a technical improvement!

to lighten up my mood (sometimes i’m really scared about the whole operation thing) i try to drink a hell of a lot of tea, eat dark bread with lowfat quark… i would love to eat some fresh vegetables or fruits, but it isn’t possible at the moment. well, later… and some fish… oh how i long for fish.

and i’m looking for some nice concerts… well, it’s like jinxed: all the finnish bands have a touring-break (nightwish, him, apocalyptica), indica are touring in finnland and the only band korpiklaani is playing really close my hometown and i’d love to see them live… but i have this fucking gall bladder operation. damn genetic material. i’m to young for this.

ich glaube, dass heute ein spaziergang in der freien und wilden natur genau das richtige wäre. wenn man sich so umschaut, spürt man diesen spätsommerlichen-frühherbstlichen wind, für den man schon einen pulli braucht, aber noch nicht unbedingt die jacke.

auch wenn nur die fenster offen sind, kann man auch diesen unglaublichen duft von draußen riechen. frische und reine luft. ja, heute werde ich noch ein paar schritte gehen. muss ich ja, sonst wird mir ja langweilig. hier drinnen. und wer weiß, wie es mir am wochenende geht, wenn alles glatt läuft und ich am freitag aufgeschnippselt werde.

ich hab angst. nicht richtig angst, aber ein mulmiges gefühl. was wenn meine werte noch nicht passen, was wenn es mir einfach so nicht gut geht, was wenn sich diese sache noch länger hinauszieht?
es ist zum haare raufen. ich hätte so viel sehen und unternehmen können.

unter anderem spielen korpiklaani am 3.10. im posthof und ich kann sie mir nicht ansehen. ich mag korpiklaani. sie sind sehr individualistisch. und machen ihre eigene musik, ohne rücksicht auf verluste. das imponiert mir. sehr stylisch.

Otro desagradable día de humanidad, nada mejor entonces que sobrevivir a nuestras someras existencias con algo de sonidos e imágenes propicios para escuchar y apreciar en las planicies siempre verdes que rodean al Valhalla, tal vez en un buen tv con conexión a Internet y mientras una sierva nos sostiene en los labios una generosa jarra de hidromiel.

Iniciemos pues nuestro periplo agraciando nuestros oídos con la video interpretación de Lumsk de su tema Trolltind. En una producción impecable, una bella noruega será nuestra guía por este viaje hacía melancólicos y oscuros lugares.

Después de tan exquisita y nostálgica descarga, ahora desde las montañas de Helvetia, serán el hurdy-gurdy y la voz de Anna Murphy, quienes nos deleitaran con esta historia acerca de una niña y su rapaz mascota. De Eluveitie, Omnos. Aconsejo verlo, vaya ojos los de esta señorita.

Como si esto fuera poco, una Diosa, venida de las paganas y salvajes tierras de la Motherland nos entona también un sentido cántico dirigido a sus ancestros y su terruño. Es como no, Masha, la juiciosa dama de Arkona, interpretando Slav’sia Rus’, en un video que rivalizaría en belleza con los propios árboles de Valinor, Telperion y Laurelin.

Es tiempo para un divertido entremés, en el cual el vodka y la humilde cerveza serán nuestros mejores acompañantes. Los juglares finlandeses de Korpiklaani nos entonan entonces está luminosa polka, Metsämies, ideal para escuchar luego de un día de duro trabajo en el bosque. No hay como llegar a la taberna al atardecer y sorprender a los lugareños con algunos desquiciados acordes.

Luego de tan y merecida relajación es tiempo de enfundar la espada y partir al saqueo y la muerte. Navegando desde las costas de las Islas Faroe, Týr, con una progresiva propuesta apropiada solo para oídos realmente exquisitos, más vikingos que nunca con el video de Hold The Heathen Hammer High. Excelente, me hierve la sangre en la parte del desembarco y la furiosa destrucción a hachazos de la infame cruz.

Ahora, otra historia guerrera, con remanentes de la Tierra Media. Kivimetsän Druidi con Jäässä Varttunut, desde las élficas tierras finlandesas.

Y siguiendo en estas blancas y gélidas regiones, y como si el Kalevala hubiera tomado forma, algo del power viking metal de Ensiferum, con un video muy en la onda del anterior, esta vez con brujas, zombies y magos.

Para terminar, luego de que la violencia y la sangre han salpicado el campo de batalla, y que amados guerreros han caído, desde Ucrania, la banda de black metal Khors, haciendo un majestuoso tema, Red Mirrors, que nos rememora algo de las creaciones del señor Vintersorg; en este cántico etéreo. El video no es tan excelente como los anteriores pero la melodía lo vale.

No podía dejarlos sin agregar este esperado link; el trailer oficial del nuevo álbum de Arkona, “Goi, Rode, Goi!”. Y juzquen ustedes la calidad de lo que será este pagano lanzamiento.

Är gånger då man trillar över en fantastisk bit med musik och då talar jag inte om pop och dansmusik och sådant jävla skit utan musik med lite känsla bakom, klart finns det bra sådana låtar också men de kan aldrig någonsin förmedla den känslan som en del band får fram.

Dessa stunder kan jag önska att ANNA min kära ANNA kunde höra och kanske förstå vad musik kan förmedla.
Kan tyckas också elakt om hon bara får höra 5 minuter och sedan återgå till dövhet.
Är ju icke så jag menar utan önskar hon kunde dela den glädje och känsla en bra bit med musik kan göra för en person.

Här har jag en sådan sång, tror också man blir mera berörd då det rör ända ner i de uråldriga finska rötter som man har och alltid kommer att ha.
