while many of you are getting ready to spend quality time with your family and boo around the christmas tree, exchanging presents and sharing laughs, i won’t be. sound bitter much? i don’t think that i am bitter but with the recent tale of events going on in my life, christmas just doesn’t feel like, well, christmas. our living room is cluttered with boxes that are filled with christmas decorations galore. my mom doesn’t  have the time to really make sense of her decorating. the walls of my house look like my 8 year old nephew decorated; no correlation at all.

i am one of those individuals who divulges in the term ‘retail therapy‘. shopping makes me happy. got some bad news? need to let my frustrations out? out to the mall i go. but recently, it hasn’t been this way. i’ve bought presents for everyone and oddly enough, i don’t expect nor want anything from anyone. my mom helped me make the switch from blackberry to iPhone and even that, something i longed for a while, didn’t satisfy me completely or as long as i had wanted it to. she even went as far as buying me a PS3 (which she still plans to wrap regardless of the fact that i was in the store with her.) to get to my point, none of these material items are allowing me to get to that happy spot i long for. this could be because the one thing i wanted (that wasn’t materialistic) is gone. long gone. forever gone. kind of makes the holidays seem pointless.

but speaking of material things … i DID buy a really cute phone case for my iPhone so hopefully it comes soon. i so desperately want to blow my paycheck on urban outfitters cigarette jeans, a chic coat, boots, and everything from sephora — which has become my latest addiction.

speaking of sephora, i wanted to bring up this question to all of my 4 readers : what cleanser do you use to wash your face? i was never one to have major acne. a blemish here or there and that’s it. now all of a sudden it seems as if my routine of noxzema just ain’t cuttin’ it. i’ve tried a couple of products such as, neutrogena and biore but they leave my skin feeling so dry and tight. i then purchased pond’s cold cream which makes my face feel great, but does nothing for break outs. i’ve gotten so notreallydesperatebutwe’lljustcallitthatfornow that i went to sephora and decided to shed out some cash. for $35 bucks i purchased this korres pomegranate set that includes the cleanser, mask, scrub, eye primer (?), and gel moisturizer. not bad, unless it DOESN’T work. let’s hope it does.

Last weekend I picked up two new lip balms at Sephora. One, I had some previous experience with; the other, I had been lusting after but was a little freaked out by the $22 price tag (I’ve never spent more than $10 on lip balm ). So how did they compare?

Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment ($22.50)

I’d read many excellent reviews of this tinted lip balm (er, excuse me, treatment) and finally I decided I had to give it a try. This stuff is awesome – it gives lips a natural-but-better flushed look, some shine, and it moisturizes to boot. Plus, it has SPF 15, and I can use all the SPF I can get, even on my lips. Or should I say especially on my lips – last summer I got a hell of a sunburn when going on a 12 o’clock boat ride with no sunscreen (I know, genius!) and the next day my bottom lip was swollen to Angelina Jolie-like proportions. This may look hot on her, but on me, it looked ridiculous. Especially since only my bottom lip got swollen.
Anyway, the moral of the story is: lip SPF = not so pointless after all.

Korres Lip Butter in Quince ($9.00)

Like I said before, this wasn’t the first Korres Lip Butter I’ve tried – I owned one before that didn’t have any tint. I loved it, and this one is no disappointment. It’s *so* moisturizing, and same as the Sugar Rosé, it adds a little flush to your lips, although this one is more pink. Sadly though, the tint & moisture don’t last as long as they do with SRTLT. After about 3 hours they start to wear off, whereas the Sugar Rosé lasts around 5-6 hours.

Overall: 4/5 for the Sugar Rosé Tinted Lip Treatment (would be 5/5 if it didn’t cost so much!) and 4/5 for the Korres Lip Butter (would be 5/5 if it lasted longer.)

This is what I woke up to yesterday: I love the snow. It’s the only thing that makes the cold seem not-so-bad. Plus, yesterday it meant I got the day off work!

Q: My friend and I were talking the other day about make-up. She went to see a dermatologist recently after she developed a rash on her chin that wouldn’t go away with the normal face-washing regimen. Her dermatologist recommended she use only paraben-free make-up to keep it at bay. Do you have any tips who makes good paraben-free make-up? K.L, Boston, MA

A: This has been a question at the forefront of my mind recently after a rash (NO pun intended.. ok maybe a little) of office incidents that have left my coworkers and I troubled. My assistant had a problem last year with her eyes; specifically, that they were itchy and red with no apparent explanation. It turned out that one of the chemicals being used at her manicure salon was making her eyes irritated. Think that’s crazy? Another co-worker just discovered she had the same problem. There are chemicals and skin irritants all around us and our bodies can react mildly or violently in response.

Sephora has taken a dedicated approach to providing more natural and organic options for consumers. They have a specific definition for what “natural” and “organic” mean, which is outlined here. They even have a glossary so you can learn more about this side of cosmetics. Basically, product ranges containing 90% or more antioxidants, botanicals, essential oils, marine bioactives, vitamins, and minerals, and which exclude a minimum of 6 of the following 8 ingredients: GMOs (genetically modified organisms), parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, and triclosan, can be defined as natural/organic. Some natural brands that I am familiar with which I enjoy are Korres (I use their Wild Rose 24-hr Moisturizer), and Caudalie, which are focused on skincare, and Tarte, which is primarily makeup. One of my friends swears by Bare Escentuals, which her mom gave her because she was always falling asleep in her makeup! It would be a good idea to go to Sephora with some products in mind and ask for some samples. If you explain your situation, I am sure a sales associate would be happy to help you try a few things out. If things backfire, they have a no-questions-asked return policy.

Since organic products can add up to a big purchase, it’s important to check out competitively-priced lines as well. I am a big believer in French drugstore brands, many of which are now available in stores like CVS stateside. La Roche-Posay is my favorite; I have used the Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser, the Rosaliac Gelee Makeup Remover, and the Anthelios sunscreen line. On the website there is a handy skin-type guide that recommends specific products. Another new cosmetics line out of Peabody, MA, Luxx Cosmetics, has great quality products in simple packaging with an online platform to minimize costs. More than half of their range is parabens-free and enriched with vitamins and minerals. I particularly like their eye shadows. If any readers have suggestions/experiences: share!

Drew shared part one of the Modern Destiny Holiday Gift Guide last week.  Now it’s my turn.  Here’s my take on some great gift for the guys in your life (or, of course, us!).  Here’s the list:

1. Japanese knives: Torijo knives, Togiharu Hammered Damascus Santoku, or Glestain Indented-Blade Gyutou. $50 – $171 from Korin. For cooks out there, Japanese knives are the real deal.  Yeah, the German knives are nice, but these are where the action is.  They generally have thinner blades, better balance, harder steel and hold a sharper edge.  The best ones go for thousands of dollars.  I’ve picked a few here: the Torijo knives are great and don’t break the bank (I love the one I have); the santoku I’ve selected has an amazing nostalgic look; the Glestain looks like it’s from Star Trek, with and indented blade that makes it glide through food (note that, unlike the others, it has a asymmetric blade like many Japanese knives, so you’ll need to specify whether your guy is left or right handed).

2. Ship shadowboxes: Morning Sky or Night Sky. $219 each from Wisteria. For the sailors out there (or just the guy who like nautical art).  Each shadowbox has a hand painted ship “sailing” over a sea of real shells.  It’s gentleman’s library meets tramp art. And they’d look great on his library wall.

3. Cashmere zip hoodie. $248 and up from J.Crew. Survey says: 90% of men like chilling in a hoodie.  He can do it in style with this cashmere zip hoodie, available in heather grey, navy, espresso and dark fatigue (aka army green).

4. 27″ iMac. $1,999 and up from Apple. Okay, I’m a geek — and I bet more than one guy in your life is one, too.  If he’s a geek who loves beautiful things (like me), and you want to splurge big time, get him this amazing new Mac.  27″ LED-backlight screen; quad-core processor (I say if you’re going to splurge, upgrade to the i7 version of the processor); 4gb or more of RAM (go for at least 8gb, which is way cheaper if you get it from a 3rd party), and much more.

5. Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York.  $40.95 from Amazon.com. Here at Modern Destiny, we’re nostalgic for classic retail experiences. There was a time when you could find amazing (and unique) retail behind most New York City store fronts.  And what store fronts they were. Revisit them in this amazing photo book.

8. Gold dove ornament. $28 from Jonathan Adler. Jonathan Adler’s wares make me happy.  Get your guy a “Cheeky Chic holiday treat.”  It comes in a festive high gloss gold glaze in a nifty blue box, and after the holidays display it on a shelf for some cheeky chic everyday.

9. Korres for Men. I am in love with Korres skin care products.  Completely natural formulations, un-pretentious and great for his skin.  Start off with the Men’s Travel Kit, $25 from Korres, and containing absinthe shaving cream, marigold and ginseng aftershave, magnesium and wheat protein shampoo, juniper and rum showergel and ruscus and chestnut eye cream.

10. Wool dog coat. $88 from Cole Haan.  Does your guy love his dog? We certainly love our little guy, and he’s getting this for Christmas.  If it’s cold, wet or foggy where he lives, consider this wool dog coat.  Beautiful silver and black wool plaid fabric and featuring velco straps for so it’s easy to get on and off.

11. Ebony corkscrew. By Roost, $10 at Velocity Art and Design. Also available in brown. What guy (at least who’s visiting Modern Destiny) doesn’t love a good bottle of wine.  And it’s best to open them in style.  These corkscrews are super-functional, small and have great design.  And if you love the design but think he’d prefer a pocket knife, check these out, in horn or bone (and some with smaller corkscrews), from $18.

12. Recycled Rover. By Roost, $128 at Velocity Art and Design or VivaTerra.  Drew and I have a great dog named Sam.  We love him, but he’s a handful.  If he’s not quite ready for that commitment, consider Rover, who’s “fashioned from twisted and woven newspaper and sports a wooden nose and eyes.”

I have been also using it on the back of my hands and they look smooth and very young (I am big on treating my hands well as they can give away a lady’s age!). The scent of the creams are earthy, but mild. 

I recommend these products to really moisturize dry skin and give a nice glow. I haven’t noticed reduction in lines, but I have not been using them for long. I love that Korres uses natural ingredients and feel good about applying them to my face!

So it’s been 10 days since my last post. I’ve tried writing a few posts, but they all felt very lackluster, uninspiring, and, well, boring. I mean, I know I’m not the liveliest or most talkative person to begin with, but through my writing, I’m usually more able to express a side of me that I don’t usually expose to the “real world”. So I’ve decided that even though this post may not be especially interesting or creative, and may be all over the map, I’m going to post it anyway.

34 Maitland Street, Toronto. They have an apartment available right now, but I’m looking to move for January 1st. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and praying that no one takes it! I’m not going to say too much about why this place is absolutely perfect for me because I don’t want to jinx my chances of getting it, but if you were to see this place, you’d think “that’s so Aminah!” (for those of you that actually know me, at least!)

I have one more interview to go, but I already know I have it in the bag – I mean, who can resist my charm, right? (haha,  just kidding!) When you really want to become part of a certain team, it’ll show, and well, as much as this also serves as my concrete means of survival (freelance work is too unstable), I actually love the vibe of their environment and everything this company has done to show their support of world issues. It would be an absolute pleasure to grow with them! Once again, I’m not giving details just in case!

They say to surround yourself with like-minded people and those who’ll encourage strength, resilience, and courage, and to leave behind the rest. Have no doubt, I’m weeding out the fear-mongers and anyone else who tells me  that I should anything else but fly. It’s time I spread my wings and show this world what I’m made of.

A lot has happened since my last post. A lot of makeup has happened and I can’t keep up! lol

I will start with when I took the Tarte Treasure Chest back to sephora. They were very nice about it, although the girl at the register was a little loopy at times it seemed. Unfortunately they were out of stock (little did I know that my local mall carried this, if I had known that this all would have never happened -.-) She tells me to come back another day to get it (I have at this point already returned the item) And another lady says that because I bought it with the Friends and Family deal they should honor it and I’ll get it for the same price. I go back to get it and apparently no one had told the register girl (same loopy one) that. *sigh* long story short, got home, opened it, it too was cracked, emailed sephora, returned it, got the money back.

At this point I don’t even want it anymore and just forget all about it and move onto bigger and better things. Such as the VIB shopping “event.” Where for the whole weekend starting Thursday or Friday I think, until Sunday (today) VIB beauty insiders get 20% total purchase.  Well I was stoked. I made a laundry list of things I wanted which included some Urban Decay products and a lighter foundation since we are now in fall and I never see the sun. Finally, after days of product research and lists, the 12th came. I decided to get the Korres Wild Rose Foundation or at least try it out and Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol.2. I get there and no BOS2 -.- It really just wasnt my month! But I still am matched for foundation and so it wasnt a total loss. I go back the next day with a revised list. I had prayed that whatever I was supposed to get would be there and it would just work out. I walk in and asked to be color match for the tinted moisturizer (full review coming soon or tomorrow via video) and while Im waiting I look over to the UD counter……..the book is there, and there is only one of them. I tell Kyle to grab it and I clutch onto it like no other.  And that ladies and gentlemen is what I got.

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. 2 is MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!! SOOOO happy! And with it I decided to make a Sephora holiday (CHRISTMAS!) green look from their new magazine and online photo. (I know that made very little sense) And this is what I did, hope you like it!! (I actually did this twice hence the reason two of them look different)

One of the things I love most about Sephora are those little bins they have near the front with cheap, sample-size products. I’ve discovered a few great makeup products in those bins! When I discovered Korres Face Primer in one, I was hoping fall into that category – I’ve been looking for a good face primer for a while now. So here’s my experience with it:

What it is: Korres Face Primer

What it’s supposed to do: “This 99% natural formula refines skin texture without silicone, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and reduces pore size. Your skin will be primed and ready for makeup application.” [via Sephora.com]

What it actually does: When I first applied this primer, I instantly noticed a difference in my skin. I can’t say that wrinkles and fine lines were less apparent, but my pores definitely looked smaller, and overall my skin looked healthier and less wan than it usually does in the morning. It gave my powder better coverage than it typically has without making me look like I was wearing tons of makeup. I also loved the smell – a very fresh, citrusy scent. However, as the day went by I have to say I became a little disenchanted. It started to wear off around the same time my powder usually does (after about 5 or 6 hours of wear) and by the time school got out I noticed shiny patches around my T-zone. Which is basically what always happens when I don’t wear primer. So in short… this primer is awesome while it’s on, but it doesn’t last too long.

Pros: Reduces pore size, makes skin look healthier.

Cons: Doesn’t make makeup last longer.

Overall: 2/5. Looks great but doesn’t give makeup an extended life.

P.S. Yup, I definitely win the Creative Title award for this one.

Last Thursday, before going to the Grace Coddington signing Jenn and I stopped by the soho Beauty Channel party hosted by Elizabeth from White Lightning.

We only had a short time to visit and play with all of the beauty products before heading over to Clic Gallery, but managed to enjoy sampling new makeup and down a few extremely mini cupcakes and a glass of punch while we were there.
