This region extends southward along a narrow peninsula lying between the Andaman Sea its west side a

This region extends southward along a narrow peninsula lying between the Andaman Sea its west side and the South China Sea on the east. It is a rich land in terms of the abundance of its natural resources, the fertility of its soil, the diversity of its people and its commercial viability.

The South is made up of 14 provinces from Chumphon in the north down to the Malaysian border 1,200 kilometres from Bangkok. It has a long coastline on either side with sandy beaches and offshore islands on both, and a rugged central hinterland of mountains and forests.

The east coast on the Gulf of Thailand always seems to be more relaxed, with long, wide bays and calm seas; the Andaman Sea coast tends to be more rugged and exhilarating, with its strange limestone rock formations and cliffs.

The occurrence of two seasonal monsoons means that the climate differs from the rest of Thailand. The southwest monsoon sweeps the west coast and the Andaman Sea from May to October, while the northeast monsoon moves across the Gulf of Thailand form November to February. The peninsula forms a barrier so that rain rarely falls on both coastlines simultaneously.

The area was once part of the Buddhist Srivijaya Empire but later came under the rule of Ayutthaya and then Bangkok. Chinese and Malaysian influences have played a large part in the cultural makeup of the region; the further south, the stronger the Malaysian influence, with a dialect akin to Malay, a predominance of Muslim communities and mosques. Rice fields give way to rubber plantations, and Chinese tin mining operations become evidence.

The coastline attracts most tourists, though Samui island in the Gulf of Thailand is growing in popularity as a laid-back holiday spot with first class diving opportunities nearby on Tao and Pha-ngan islands.

The Andaman Sea coast offers more sophisticated choices in the island province of Phuket, Thailand’s premier holiday resort. However, the fascinating rock formations and offshore islands at Phang-nga, Krabi and Trang are extremely popular for the diving and sailing opportunities they offer.

The mountains, rivers and forests in the national parks in the interior of the peninsula are also gaining popularity with eco-tourists, as can be seen with the growing numbers of safari expeditions on foot, by elephant and in canoes.

The South of Thailand consists of 14 provinces: Chumphon, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phang-nga, Phatthalung, Phuket, Ranong, Satun, Songkhla, Surat Thani, Trang and Yala.

Located roughly 800 kilometers south of Bangkok and 65 kilometers northeast of Phuket, Krabi is one

Located roughly 800 kilometers south of Bangkok and 65 kilometers northeast of Phuket, Krabi is one of the Thailand’s most enchanting destinations. Sprawling over an area of about 4705 square kilometers, Krabi is a province, placed on the Strait of Malacca, and is bordered by Surathani and Phang Nga to the north, the Andaman Sea to the south and the west, and Nakorn Si Thammarat and Trang provinces to the east.

With its unbeatable natural scenery, mysterious caves, lush green forested hills, rubber and palm plantations, unspoilt beaches, and well-organized infrastructure system, Krabi has now become one of the most sought after destinations in the world.

Many of the visitors, especially the Scandivians, touring Thailand spend majority of their times in Krabi. During the winter as well as Christmas, many westerners including Europeans flock here to escape from the extremely cold climate of their home country, since Krabi maintains its mild sunny weather even during the coldest months.

Krabi boasts of some of the best beaches in Thailand. No matter you want to relax, or to engage in a number of fun-filled as well as adventure activities, or just to take a stroll to savor the incredibility of the surroundings, Krabi’s beaches render all that a visitor would really want to have.

Most popular among the beaches in the destination are Ao Nang Beach, which is a paradise for enjoying such water sport activities as scuba diving, trekking, and kayaking; Railay Beach, which serves as an excellent spot for wannabee rock climbers.

Pra Nang Beach, which is a great destination for snorkeling and canoeing; Klong Muang Beach – a perfect destination to take a moonlight stroll as well as to enjoy excellent dining; and Nopparat Thara Beach, a scenic beach fringed with casuarina trees, which is popular among picnickers. In deed, with these incredible beaches, Krabi is a mecca of water sport activities. Apart from these, Krabi is home to more than 200 islands, Phi Phi Don Island, Phi Phi Lay Island, Koh Taleng Beng, Koh Lanta Yai, and Mu Koh Hah being the prominent.

However, attractions in Krabi are not just restricted to its beaches and islands. But, before discussing about other attractions in the region, it is important that you should have clear idea on each district of the region. The province of Krabi is made up of eight amphoes or districts including Amphoe Mueang, Khao Phanom, Ko Lanta, Nuea Khlong, Ao Luk, Lam Thap, Khlong Thom, and Plai Phraya, each of which comes with an array of sights.

Amphoe Mueang is home to such incredible attractions as Khao Khanap Nam, 100 meters high hill that rise from the water; Tham Sua, otherwise known as Tiger Cave; Tham Sadet, which is a gorgeous cave with unique stalagmites and stalactites; and Fossil Shell Beach.

Most popular among the attractions in Amphoe Khao Phanom is Kho Phanom Bencha National Park, occupying an area of about 50 square kilometers and covering some regions of Amphoe Ao Luk, Amphoe Khao Phanom, and Amphoe Muang. Some of the highlights of the park are Namtok Huai To, Namtok Huai Sa-de, and Namtok Khlong Haeng.

Perhaps the first attraction that comes into your mind when you hear about Amphoe Ko Lanta is Mu Ko Lanta National Park, which consists of several islands. Ko Lanta Yai is the park’s main island. Included in the attractions of Amphoe Ao Luk is Than Bokkhorani National Park, which is about 45 kilometers from the downtown Krabi. Few among the attractions in Amphoe Khlong Thorn are Wat Khlong Thorn Museum, Namtok Hin Phoeng, Thung Teao, and Namtok Ron.

In short, no matter you are a history buff, spiritual traveler, sightseer, or adventure lover, Krabi has something for everyone. Understanding the tremendous increase in the number of travelers year after year, a large number of accommodation options have been developed here, of which many of them are five star and three star facilities.

An array of options is also available for budget conscious travelers. Just browse through the internet and you can easily find a number of choices, from which you select an option according to your taste and budget. Many of the hotels provide facilities to make bookings online. All you have to do is to inform them your likes and preferences, and rest they will take care.

Bin inzwischen ziemlich ausgeruht.

Flowing through Krabi City to the Andaman Sea at Pak Nam Sub-district is Maenam Krabi which is 5 kilometers in length. In addition, there are several canals originating from the province’s highest mountain range, Khao Phanom Bencha including Khlong Pakasai, Khlong Krabi Yai and Khlong Krabi Noi. Lush mangrove forests line the canals and the banks of Maenam Krabi particularly before it empties into the Andaman Sea. The provinces sandy soil conditions are suitable for growing various agricultural products, particularly rubber trees, palms, coconuts, cashew nuts and coffee.

Due to the influence of the tropical monsoon, there are only two seasons in Krabi; the hot season from January to April and the rainy season from May to December. Temperatures range between 17 C and 37 C.

Krabi is administratively divided into 8 Amphoes (Districts): Amphoe Mueang, Khao Phanom, Khlong Thom, Plai Phraya, Ko Lanta, Ao Luek, Lam Thap, and Nuea Khlong. The provinces jurisdiction covers not only in-land districts and sub-districts, but also extends to more than 130 large and small islands including the world famous Phi Phi Islands.

In addition, Krabi is the location of two world class beaches Ao Nang and Hat Rai Le which offer numerous diving trips, restaurants, shops etc. Additional attractions in the province are stunning limestone cliffs and rock formations which make it a heaven for rock climbers and a National Park located approximately 40 kilometers outside of town with lakes, caves and spectacular natural scenery.

History of Krabi

Some archeologists claim that Krabi City is one of the older settlements in the country as there is archaeological evidence indicating that this area had been home to homosapiens during the prehistoric times or between 25,000 – 35,000 B. C. The assumption has been strongly supported by the discovery of stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery and skeletal remains in the provinces cliffs and caves.

In 1200 A.D., the area was known as Ban Thai Samo, one of 12 royal cities that had a monkey as the town symbol. During this period of time, Krabi was under the rule of the Kingdom of Ligor, a city better known today as Nakhon Si Thammarat.

During the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910), the community was known as Pakasai Sub-county and remained under the direct jurisdiction of Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

Around 1872, King Rama V elevated Pakasai Sub-county to Krabi Province with the provincial administration office situated at Krabi-yai Sub-county (currently, the office is located near the estuary at Pak Nam Sub-district) and in 1875, ordered the separation of Krabi Province from Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.

During the present reign, the corps of civil servants, merchants, and the people of Krabi and nearby provinces have collectively organized the construction of a royal residence at Laem Hang Nak Cape which is thirty kilometers west of Krabi Town on the Andaman coast to be presented to His Majesty the King.

Origin of the name Krabi

There are two legends concerning the origin of the name “Krabi“. The first is that villagers presented a large ancient sword (or krabi) that was discovered by chance to the governor. Later when a smaller, on discovering a smaller one, it was also presented to the governor. Regarded as sacred and auspicious, the governor decided to keep them in the province. As the process for the establishment of the province was still in progress, the swords were placed crossing each other in Khao Khanap Nam cave. Since then, the crossed swords have remained a part of the provincial seal.

The second legend is that “Krabi” was derived from the name of a local tree known as “Lumphi”. The Malay and Chinese merchants mispronunciation of the name to “Ka-lu-bi” or “Kho-lo-bi” finally resulted in “Krabi” (or sword).

To get to the islands of Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi, you typically depart from Krabi (or Phuket if you

To get to the islands of Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi, you typically depart from Krabi (or Phuket if you‘re coming from the other direction). After flying there from Bangkok, I was informed that I missed the last boat to Lanta, and I didn’t particularly feel like taking a bus down there. Next option – take a long tail boat from Krabi to a more backpacker friendly beach area. As I was on the bus to where the long tails depart, it started pouring rain. That ruled the long tail boat option out. I was stuck in Krabi. The bus made its way down to Ao Nang, which is a bit more of an upscale area. Mostly filled with older couples, families, and honeymooners, this was not a typical backpacker spot, so I decided not to live like a backpacker for a few days.

I ended up choosing to stay at the Ao Nang Princeville Resort and Spa. Sounds fancy, and it was quite nice. Lovely grounds, a nice swimming pool, continental breakfast, and extremely comfortable and well appointed rooms with balconies facing either the pool or the ocean. The beach isn’t as pristine as in other places, but it is nice, and offers spectacular sunset views. The cost? 2500 baht per night, or $75 USD. While this is way out of backpacker budget range, and at first I was a little horrified that I was spending so much on a room, I started to think about what a hotel of this quality would cost in the States. In Hawaii this place would run about $350, is my guess. If you‘re looking for a slightly more luxurious vacation, but don‘t have a large budget, it can easily be done in Thailand.

Room at the Ao Nang Princeville Resort

Pool at Princeville Resort

I stayed in luxury for two nights, got nice and tan by the pool and the beach, had my first Thai banana pancake, and took complete advantage of the continental breakfast, which was delicious and had a TON of options. Then it was back to reality, which, let me tell you, can be pretty harsh when you’re on the beaches of Thailand.

Noaptea luam autobuzul catre nordul indepartat, destinatia Chiang Mai.

è rilassante e allo stesso tempo ti tiene sveglio!

As I’ve posted before, the best photos of children are those full of action with children doing what they love to do, playing. In addition to allowing you to capture energetic vibrant photos, play does keep them occupied so that the images are not stunted by wooden poses with fake smiles. On the beach, try taking photos of your child splashing water. And the closer the better.

Photographs at the beach bring up other issues such as safety of the child and keeping your camera dry and out of the water. Before you consider pictures at the beach, think safety first. Also, you might consider one of those water-proof “point and shoot” cameras that are available for several hundred dollars.

In travel, things don’t always go as we planned in our itinerary. Many events might occur while we’re on the road leading to modifications of our tailored travel itinerary. Don’t sweat about it, these stuff are natural when you travel independently, quite often resulting in an even more adventurous & exciting travel experience.

On my last post I included an itinerary to my next travel destination. Now that I’ve walked the streets of KL, tasted the historical vibe of Malaka, and awed by the magnificent beauty of Krabi & Phi Phi, I’d like to share how far did my home made travel itinerary actually go in practice. Note that any modifications are typed in red!

Air travellers in Southeast Asia now have greater options when flying beyond and within the region.

Air travellers in Southeast Asia now have greater options when flying beyond and within the region. Kazakh national carrier Air Astana has commenced flights from Almaty to Kuala Lumpur, while low cost carrier Tiger Airways returns to the southern Thai city of Hat Yai.

Air Astana Links Malaysia With Kazakhstan

Travellers now have a direct link when flying between Kuala Lumpur and Almaty. Air Astana has launched a weekly, nonstop service using a 2-class Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with 30 Business and 190 Economy Class seats.

The inaugural flight on 31 October 2009 was welcomed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Malaysia’s Minister of Transport, YB Dato’ Sri Ong Tee Keat, and officials of Malaysia Airports. Onboard the flight was the Deputy Chairman of Kazakhstan’s Committee for Civil Aviation, Talgat Lastaev, accompanied by Ibrahim Canliel, Vice-President of Marketing and Sales at Air Astana and members of the media from Kazakhstan.

Flight KC 935 departs Almaty International Airport every Saturday at 0055 hrs, arriving in Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 1055 hrs. The return flight, KC 936, takes off from Kuala Lumpur at 2335 hrs, landing back in Almaty at 0625 hrs the next morning.

Kuala Lumpur is Air Astana’s 7th international destination in Asia and the Middle East, joining Bangkok, Beijing, Delhi, Dubai, Seoul and Urumqi. From its hubs in Almaty, Astana and Atyrau, the airline flies to 44 domestic and international destinations with a fleet of Airbus A319, A320, Boeing B757, B767 and Fokker 50 aircraft.

Tiger Airways Returns To Hat Yai

Singapore-based Tiger Airways has resumed flights to Hat Yai in southern Thailand. The low cost carrier will operate 3 flights a week every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Flight TR 132 departs Singapore at 1325 hrs, arriving in Hat Yai at 1350 hrs. The return flight, TR 133, takes off from Hat Yai International Airport at 1420 hrs, landing back in Changi International Airport at 1645 hrs.
The resumption of flights to Hat Yai increases the number of Thai destinations in Tiger Airways’ network to 4, including Bangkok (served triple daily), Phuket (served double daily) and Krabi (served 4 times weekly), which was also recently restarted in October 2009.

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Hong Island (or Ko Hong) for a bit of light kayaking, snorkeling and heavy duty fun. We had signed on with Sea Kayak Krabi for their package that included three islands, a great lunch, and a circumnavigation of Hong Island. All in all it was a lot of fun. The kayaking did not require any technical skill and was void of any strenous paddling. It was a pleasurable trip that I would recommend to anyone, including families with children.

Although the trip took place on a holiday, the island was visited by only 30 people while we were there. Given the size of the beach, you had all the privacy one could desire. And of course as you can see from the photos, the tropical waters were crystal clear.
