More usually to be found accompanying Can’s finest, Jaki Liebezeit, in Phantomband, or as part of Dunkelziffer or Unknown Cases, guitarist Dominik von Senger also found time record a couple of solo records. Perhaps he was busy. Accompanied by the likes of Can’s Rosko Gee on bass and synth compatriot Helmut Zerlett (he of Baked Beans fame, on Recycle or Die, in our little musical warehouse, if not in yours) this is a tasty slice of no-wave with Krautrock overtones. “Dlaluc” has turned up on a few trendy New York mix CDs this year, and we read somewhere recently that there’s a new version of “No Name” on its way reworked by a US remix/edits crew.

The second record from a decade later is a tad less Talking Heads-y, a little crunchier, but again well worth your attention. (And if you want to be way beyond geeky, you could even point out that Helmut Zerlett’s keyboard solo on “Blow” is basically a reprise of “Bake Daga” by those Baked Beans… of whom we shall talk more soon.) Meanwhile, Dominik’s new band Grundwasser has a website. Bring it on!

If you are anything like me and love live recordings of Bob Dylan then you owe it to yourself to grab this. The Grateful Dead interpret Dylan’s songs in perfectly nuanced ways. From the kraut-like locomotion of the double drummers to Weir’s wounded blues bedrock to Jerry’s space jazz noodling. Another thing that makes this an essential is the song selection. The highlight of the disc is “Joey” which wobbles itself into a pretty heavy version of the tune. Of course with any Dylan/Dead collaboration there is renditions of “All Along The Watchtower”, and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”. To really appreciate the spaciousness of this live album you should play this a little loud. Like with most Dead related things, songs start a little strange but eventually simmer into a pretty dense musical landscape. It’s a good late Sunday afternoon album.

Nurturing these pickles for a week, you become attached. I’ll be more than distraught if something goes wrong now. They still taste good but today was the first day I noticed the presence of white, filmy scum…mold I suppose. Perhaps my cover was too airtight? I replaced it with a pillow case to let the brew breathe a little better. Looks like my instincts were also right to add extra salt after the first day, according to Wild Fermentation master Sandorkraut. My recipe called for 1/2 cup salt to his 3/8 cup per 4 pounds cukes, so at least I already had that more saline brine he recommends. It’s nice to see that even experts botch their ferments when they first begin. It is a science but not an exact one. There’s plenty of room for trial and error here. Sandor also gave me the idea to try horseradish leaves in addition to the grape ones to keep the pickles crisp. Though I need to transplant my horseradish root into a big pot, else it take over the yard!

Next, I’ll try to make a kraut ferment with this beautiful young purple cabbage our friend Sang picked and gave to us today. We are dog-sitting sweet Mr. Baba (baba-sitting) while she and Antony head to Burning Man this week.

I’ll start small with kraut in a mason jar. Season it with caraway, celery seeds and/or fennel. I just hope the dog doesn’t get into it:) Any suggestions on kraut seasonings? Any advice on controlling mold while your veggies brine?

Info: San Francisco’s enigmatically named Wooden Shjips play a minimal, droning brand of garag

Info: San Francisco’s enigmatically named Wooden Shjips play a minimal, droning brand of garage-styled psychedelia with a noticeable ’60s Krautrock influence. The band’s vocals slip beneath waves of throbbing minimal rhythms, while fuzz tone guitar and shrieking organs jump to the foreground. The idea was that untrained players would have a brand new outlook on music and could bring something fresh to the table, perhaps a blend of the often noisy trance rock of the Velvet Underground and the frenetic mania of the one-hit wonder garage punks of the early ’60s. Bassman Dusty Jermier, for example, was originally recruited to play sax, an instrument he’d never picked up before. Other members from that first incarnation often had such a lack of interest in playing live, the band hardly bothered looking for gigs.

Is it raining?

If the answer is no, then we are probably grilling dinner outside. All the love that the oven got during the winter has been transferred to the grill.

I am new at this, but it’s working out well. Grilling is pretty mindless actually, after you get over the fear of blowing yourself up or singing the eyebrows off while lighting the thing. I even have time to zone out in the late afternoon sun and wander around the yard while the grill works its magic.

Here is a shot from the yard, taken while I was "making dinner."

More wandering.

I could hug the grill. That’s how happy I am about this new method of cooking. This is not advisable. It smells so good though, especially when there are fresh herbs involved.

One thing I am still trying to do is cook veggies and sides on the grill as well, so no pans need to be washed at all. I haven’t quite mastered this yet, but I will be grilling Brussel sprouts as soon as I can.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1815" title="071109_3" src="http://meganboley.wordpress.com/files/2009/07/071109_3.jpg" alt="You have to like german food and kraut for this one.

Info: Baïkonour is the brainchild of one man, Jean-Emmanuel Krieger. Named after a town in Khazakstan, Krieger’s project combines electronic and post-rock elements with a deep appreciation for the versatility of the guitar. Krieger, who hails from France, currently resides in Brighton. His roots, however, have inevitably led to comparisons with groups like Air and Super Discount. Krieger draws on a variety of inspirations, which manifest themselves in his music in different ways. These inspirations include a diverse group, ranging from Marvin Gaye to My Bloody Valentine to Alice Coltrane. Upon the release of his debut album, For The Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos, in 2005, Baïkonour received positive reviews from critics. Matthew Murphy, a writer for Pitchfork Media, said of the Lonely Hearts, “Throughout the album, Krieger consistently astonishes with the daring breadth of his playing, as he embellishes several otherwise straightforward pop hooks with as much florid ornamentation as good taste will allow… And this he does with such an addictively melodic flair that it should be easy for listeners to find space for this album within their lonely hearts.” (indiepassion)

“Put Your Head Down You Stupid German Bastard.”

This may seem like a stupid idea, to post a review about a game that was released in 2002. But you can go fuck yourself if you think that.

Battlefield- for those who are unaware of the series can only be described as GTA on a battlefield. Planes, tanks, cars, weaponry, boats, helicopters, armoured vehicles you name it, you can use it.

It’s fucking awesome. I’ve never played anything like it. It may be from ‘02 but I can’t describe how good it is for the time. Sure, the graphics aren’t great, and some things look the same here and there. It doesn’t bother me. It adds to the charm.

Since the release of the game, something like 3 other Battlefield titles have been released; Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2142 and Bad Company. But I’ve played all but one, and they aren’t the same. The developers also released a couple of updates, but I don’t have them so forget they existed.

I will start with the really, really good:
You can play as the following nations: Germany, Russia, America, Japan, and, best of all BRITAIN.
The weapons all handle differently.
Because it’s so old, you can run it on a dodgy pc on high quality graphics and sound easily.
It’s easy to play. Just play it and learn as you go.
The voices are actually realistic- “Our Chaps Can’t Hold Them.”- British “We’ve Got Them On The Run!”- American (I don’t speak Japanese, Russian or very good German so I can’t do theirs).
Most WW2 weapons are usable.
It’s easy to cheat, You can hide inside watchtowers, and in the floor of buildings without anyone knowing.

Now for the bad:
The guns are incorrect- Russia never used American weapons such as the BAR 1918.
The guns are out of place- The Japanese use the STG44 in 1942, despite the fact it was only invented in 1944.
Some guns are far, far too inaccurate.
The tanks have stupid weak spots.
Vehicles don’t get replaced quick enough.
One or two maps are so fucking large, nothing happens for half the battle.
The environments are not damageable.
Going Kamikaze into ships doesn’t do any damage.
If you go online, there are utter fuckwits who happen to think it’s cool to name themselves “Adolf Hitler”.
Some teams have Superior weaponry.
My game crashes occasionally.
And the Swastika has been removed.

So if you can get past some of the bad points, and enjoy the good ones, you can understand why I reviewed this game instead of, the new Call Of Duty. It’s not a classic.

Battlefield will always be one of, if not the best game I’ve ever played. A few more issues have just come to mind though:
The game has more battles with the Americans involved than any other. Whoever made it forgot that Britain, and Australia fought in the Pacific, that more Indians were killed in WW2 than Americans, that the Russians had the most soldiers fighting against Germany, that Britain fought Germany away from the island of Britain by themselves (It neglects to show that even happened) and that Germany DID actually win battles in WW2. But I suppose they can be forgiven. I still enjoy shooting Germans with the Enfield .303- But even that was renamed for American players- simply, the “No. 4″. Fucking Idiots. Considering I got the game for free, that is forgiven too.

The battles that are playable are:
Midway- (Pacific Battle- Japan Vs. America)
Battle Of The Bulge- (Western Front- Germany Vs. America)
Berlin- (Eastern Front- Germany Vs. Russia)
Bocage- (Western Front- Germany Vs. America)
El Alamein- (North Africa- Germany Vs. Britain)
Gazala- (North Africa- Germany Vs. Britain)
GuadalCanal- (Pacific- Japan Vs. America)
Iwo Jima- (Pacific- Japan Vs. America)
Kharkov- (Eastern Front- Germany Vs. Russia)
Kursk- (Eastern Front- Germany Vs. Russia)
Omaha Beach- (Western Front- Germany Vs. America)
Operation Battleaxe- (North Africa- Germany Vs. Britain)
Operation Market Garden- (Western Front- Germany Vs. America)
Stalingrad- (Eastern Front- Germany Vs. Russia)
Tobruk- (North Africa- Germany Vs. Britain)
Wake Island- (Pacific- Japan Vs. America)

You’ll notice that the Krauts were featured heavily. Basically, they fucked everyone off so they deserved it.

I might put my version of the game on here for free download. MAYBE.
