New York Daily News/Chrisena Coleman—Filmmaker Tyler Perry, who is promoting a new movie about an abused teenager, has gone public with brutal memories of his own childhood beatings and molestation.

In an email to fans that has Perry’s admirers buzzing, he recounts various examples of terrible childhood mistreatment – from his father beating him senseless to a neighbor woman molesting him at age 10.

Even his grandmother, the mother of his hated father, became a threat when she objected to his weekly allergy shot, he recalls.

“Ain’t nothing wrong with that damn boy – he just got germs on him. Stop wasting all that money,” she said, he recalled.

“She came and got me out of the living room leaving my Matchbox cars on the floor. She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all. She gave me a bath in ammonia.”

Perry, 38, fled his abusive home in New Orleans and, after a period of homelessness and struggle, became a writer, director, actor and producer.

He is now a mega-millionaire and one of the world’s most influential black filmmakers. He is the producer of “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” on TV and his movies, including “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “Madea’s Family Reunion” and “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” have grossed $400 million.

Along with Oprah Winfrey, he executive produced “Precious,” the story of an illiterate obese teen mom struggling to rise above horrible sexual and mental abuse. The movie opens nationally Nov. 6.

I have started traveling to Southeast Kansas to do shoots because I have family down there. This last trip “home” my step-sister wanted to do some pictures in her volleyball outfit. This is her first year in high school and I was thrilled to be able to help her remember it.

I wanted to check out a few locations in Pittsburg, Ks too, so after the volleyball shoot we changed and headed to town. I completely spaced the car show that was being held on the main street in town so this forced us to venture and find new locations that I hadn’t thought about using. We found some awesome locations that I can’t wait to use again!

And I apologize for that! I have been so busy with shoots and traveling I haven’t had much time to update the good old blog. I have a TON of new photos coming so be sure to check back soon for them.

I had the opportunity to meet up with a few other local OpLove photographers a few weeks ago. I am so happy I was able to make it! I loved meeting new photographers and love being able to chat about the “business” of photography. We only had time for about an hour meeting but I think we could have all sat there and chatted for hours. I hope we are able to get together again soon! Also, see that new logo up there? Well, things will be changing again, I know I’m horrible about it, in November. My domain name for my website will expire and I want to move things to just a blog. I need a new look, so what do you think? Any advice?

I wanted to get some family photos before my husband deployed, so I dragged out the family while my mother-in-law and nephew where here. It is by far the hardest shoot I have done to date. But! Today, I would like to talk about Leonard Albert Kravitz, known to the world as Lenny Kravitz. If you’ve ever heard of Lenny Kravitz, feel free to skip the next few sentences while I explain to everyone else who he is Lenny Kravitz is the son of Sy Kravitz and Roxie Roker (the lady who played Helen in the Jeffersons TV show back in the day) and he was born on May 26, 1964.  He’s also the father of Zoe Kravitz, the “No Reservations” actress, daughter of “The Cosby Show”’s Lisa Bonet (aka Denise Huxtable!). Anyhow, if you haven’t ever listened to Mr. Kravitz’ music, then you are missing out! I had the privilege of being shown a few of his songs by my older brother when I was just a little girl and I can honestly say that I AM STILL LISTENING. It has been years upon years and anytime a Lenny Kravitz song comes on, I will still dance, I will sing along, I will still feel connected to the music.  He has SO many great works of musical art and not only that, but -according to looktothestars.org- he has also participated in/supported charities that deal with AIDS, Abuse, Children, Cancer, Poverty, World Hunger, Peace, Anti-Racism, and many others.  He is undoubtedly an honourable person and his interviews are so amazing to watch! He rocks the stage each time, too! His music can get anyone hyped! And for all the believers out there, he’s said that he is both a Christian and a Jew and he considers them to be extremely similar- apparently he also has a tattoo on his back that reads  “My Heart Belongs to Jesus Christ.” (Wiki). Also, he seemingly expresses his spirituality in some of  his tracks such as “Dig In” (from the “Lenny” album) and also  on the “Baptism” album, mainly the song “Baptized”, which is one of the best songs I have ever heard in my whole life.   But whether you believe in God/Jesus Christ or not doesn’t change the fact that Lenny Kravitz is an amazing singer, rockstar, guitar player, human, writer, actor, being.  Again I say, if you haven’t had the chance to listen to any of his music, PLEASE PLEASE take the time to do so! You won’t be disappointed. Oh and my personal favourite albums by him are “5″, “Let Love Rule”, “Lenny”, “It Is Time For A Love Revolution” and “Baptism”.  And even though those are my favourite albums,  I enjoy all his others as well! They are amazing! He’s extremely talented.  He has been one of the few people to break down so many barriers showing that African-Americans can greatly influence rock music, too.  I really saw that in him when he covered the late Jimi Hendrix’ (another African American rockstar) song, “American Woman.” If you’ve never heard that song, you need to- it’s got such a catchy hook, the guitar is so strong, his solo is amazing, and the music has the power to make you get the actual strong,  “get-a-way-from-me” feeling that he portrays in the song.  And “I love The Rain” is such a powerful, yet so beautiful song- it’s more than a song, it becomes an experience. His soft, yet so very masculine crooning in “Calling All Angels” will make anyone feel as though they have spent their whole life searching for love.  His audible emotion in “Stillness Of Heart” will make anyone long for exactly what he is singing about- stillness of heart. “Dancin Til Dawn” will make anyone dance for hours. And not to mention, the infamous “Fly Away”- that song is one of the best songs that was ever recorded. The “yeah’s” in the middle of and at the end of the chorus will make ANYONE sing along. And there are tons of other phenomenal works by Lenny Kravitz.  Long story short, his music is  nothing short of incredible. AND I am also SO VERY EXCITED for the soon-to-be released track by Lenny Kravitz and the late Michael Jackson (R.I.P.) I think it will be SO amazing to hear two musical geniuses teaming up and making a song for everyone to enjoy! I am ALSO SO VERY EXCITED for the upcoming film “Precious” that will be released on November 6th.  It is a Lee Daniels film and Lenny Kravitz will be in it, as well as Paula Patton, Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, and many others! I’ve seen the trailer and read the story and I think it will be an awesome, inspiring movie to watch.  So, basically what I am saying is that Lenny Kravitz is a true definition of a musical genius- I really hope that I can meet him one day! Give his music an open-minded listen and you will definitely find something you like! That’s it for today guys.  Happy Lenny Kravitz Day to you all.

So, about a month ago I did a “family shoot” with my family. lol Let’s just say next time I want family pictures I’ll hire someone else. lol. Here are a few shots from the day. I will have this album posted soon!

I was listening to ‘Sir’ Lenny Kravitz’s’s’s’s ‘Greatest Hits’ and I just got in the mood and these three designs came together after about half an hour. I’m a fan of the first design, I love the bright colours, the second, I just wanted to use a portrait style picture for his face on this one and the last one was design whilst listening to ‘I built this garden for us’, which may explain the flowers and trees and so on!

Mariah’s movie Precious has just gotten another revamp for mainstream audiences and the awards season. Now that it’s funded by none other than Oprah, it needs to make an impact both at the box office and the critics’ hearts. I think it looks more appealing than this.

A cominciare (per ordine di importanza, non cronologico) da quello più atteso, ovvero lo sbarco all’Olimpico di Bruce Springsteen con la sua E street band (ma senza la moglie Patty Scialfa) il 19 luglio (dopo le polemiche per la concomitanza con i mondiali di nuoto): il Boss ha già debuttato in Europa in Olanda e lo spettacolo si annuncia gradevolissimo con il rocker più famoso del mondo che invita il pubblico a scegliere i pezzi che vuole ascoltare.
Ma il calendario è fitto e anche ricco di altre occasioni interessanti, alcune perfino inedite. Come il consigliatissimo concerto di Ry Cooder (27 giugno alla Cavea), il raffinato chitarrista, che ha legatio il suo nome al rilancio dei Buena Vista ma che da allora è andato avanti con progetti curatissimi e azzeccatissimi e che si presenta in coppia con il cantautore Nick Lowe. Codder da quindici anni non mette piede in Italia. Lo stadio Olimpico aprirà i suoi cancelli alla musica per la prima volta il prossimo 16 giugno, per l’arrivo dei Depeche mode, una delle più influenti band dell’era postpunk.

A piazza di Siena, invece, il 12 va in scena l’appuntamento (rinviato) di Claudio Baglioni a piazza di Siena. Sul fronte degli italiani la curva dell’Olimpico vedrà un doppio Tiziano Ferro il 24 e 25, mentre il 26 Pino Daniele sarà di scena alla Cavea dell’Auditorium con la sua band elettrica e il 4 toccherà a Francesco De Gregori esibirsi. Franco Battiato sarà al Teatro Antico di Ostia il 10 luglio, Fiorella Mannoia il 10 e Ivano Fossati il 22: entrambi alla Cavea.
Tornando al rock, da non perdere il concerto con la grande voce di Lauryn Hill (era la front woman dei formidabili Fugees) il 3 luglio alla Cavea dell’Auditorium, come quello dei raffinatissimi Steely Dan di Donald Fagen e Walter Becker (il 6). Anastacia sbarcherà nello stesso luogo il 12. Si annuncia ricchissimo (e da non perdere) lo show del veterano cantautore di You’ve got a friend James Taylor con una superband sfavillante (il 19) e raro sarà l’appuntamento con un altro musicista che sa risparmiarsi come David Byrne sull’onda della sua collaborazione con Brian Eno. Due dei gruppi giovani più gettonati, The Killers e i Franz Ferdinand, si divideranno una serata della rassegna Rock in Roma (il 14 luglio a Capanelle) seguiti, il 15, da una band heavy come i Motorhead. Mentre i Metallica sono attesi il 24 giugno al Palalottomatica e gli Ub40 il 30 a Rock in Roma, mentre una rockband storica di casa nostra come la Pfm l’8 luglio porterà sul palco il proprio sperimentato omaggio a Fabrizio de André. Sempre a Capanelle, ma ospite della kermesse latina, Fiesta, il 26 giugno è in cartellone Jarabe De Paolo.
Sfogliando il calendario musicale estivo, da annotare sono ancora gli appuntamenti con il grande compositore Burt Bacharach (80 anni) che sarà alla Cavea il 24 luglio e quello con il cantautore John Fogerty (il 25). Nella stessa arena dell’Auditorium gli ultimi due concerti della rassegna Luglio suona bene prevedono la presenza di Tracy Chapman (il 27) e di Antony and the Johnsons il 28.
