Nacht van Hengelo 2012 / 1 June / Hengelo

Martijn Keizer (VCD) and Bobbie Traksel (LAN) were two of the riders that were present at this year’s Nacht van Hengelo. Just like in the Giro d’Italia, Martijn attacked a lot during the evening. Some of the other riders present in the criterium were Maarten Tjallingii (RAB), Lars van der Haar (RBG), Kai Reus (UHC) and the brothers Michel and Raymond Kreder (GRM). Of course Joost Posthuma (RNT) was also present in the for him local criterium.

Coen Vermeltfoort (RAB) was added to the startlist at the very last minute. Last year, the organization gave the chance to a few local elite riders to participate in the Nacht van Hengelo and they decided to do that again in 2012. This year the podium of the District Championships East and the best U23 rider got an invitation. Mark Olieman, the District Champion, even brought a bunch of guys from his Kanjers voor Kanjers Cyclingteam along to cheer him on and showed that elite riders can do well among professional riders.

This year the organization managed to get the famous Italian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi (LAM) to Hengelo. In the photo above he is riding at the top of the peloton behind the talented Rabobank Continental rider Rick Zabel from Germany, son of former sprint champion Erik Zabel.

In this photo the peloton just passed one of the corners in the course. Lieuwe Westra (VCD) was the rider who won the 37th edition of the Nacht van Hengelo. He crossed the finish line solo and Alessandro Petacchi (LAM) won the sprint in the following group. Pim Ligthart (VCD) became third. Profronde Almelo 2011 / 26 August / Almelo

Samuel Sánchez (EUS), who was at the Profronde Almelo last year, returned in 2011 to show his polkadot jersey. Some of the other riders that were present at the criterium were Johnny Hoogerland, Rob Ruijgh, Lieuwe Westra, Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil-DCM), André Greipel, Marcel Sieberg (Omega Pharma – Lotto), Thomas Dekker, Raymond Kreder (Chipotle Development Team) and Reinier Honig (Landbouwkrediet).

Maarten Tjallingii, who worked hard for his team in the Tour de France, was there too. This year he became third in Paris-Roubaix. Other riders from Team Rabobank were Bram Tankink and Coen Vermeltfoort.

The peloton just after the official start. After 100 kilometres through the centre of Almelo, Rob Ruijgh (VCD) became the winner at the end of the night.

It is always hard for us to make good and clear photos at a criterium like the Profronde Almelo, because it is dark right from the start. Nacht van Hengelo 2011 / 3 June / Hengelo

Dominic Klemme and Tom Stamsnijder (LEO) were present at this year’s cycling criterium in Hengelo. Another rider from their team, Joost Posthuma, was also there. For him it was a ‘home race’; he was born in Hengelo.

Among the other riders were Johnny Hoogerland, Alberto Ongarato and Marcello Pavarin from Vacansoleil-DCM (photo). There were a lot of riders from Team Rabobank, including Steven Kruijswijk, Bram Tankink and Tom-Jelte Slagter. Also Jetse Bol was present, he rides for Rabobank CT, and Raymond Kreder, who rides for the Chipotle Development Team.

Team Skil-Shimano was presented by four riders, including Robin Chaigneau, Albert Timmer, Tom Veelers and sprinter Kenny van Hummel.

Pieter Weening (RAB) who won a stage in the Giro d’Italia also was the winner of the evening: he crossed the finish line before Joost Posthuma (LEO) and teammate Steven Kruijswijk, who became 9th in the Giro d’Italia. For more info on cycling criteriums go here or go to www.nachtvanhengelo.nl.
