Ela — aos 16 aninhos, mulher madura, cristã e coerente que é — ainda citou outras como o black metal capetão pero no mucho Dimmu Borgir e os crentes metalcore Underoath, The Devil Wears Prada e Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.

E aí, depois de assistir ao clipe da Demi Lovato, será que deu pra notar as influências metaleiras? Se bem que pelo Here We Go Again dá até pra pensar no krishnacore do Shelter, e, indo mais longe, reparar que tudo na garota envolve religião!

I’ve been trying to think about when I first started wanting tattoos. I knew about tattoos when I was little (Popeye, duh), but I don’t think I seriously considered what it would be like to have a tattoo until I knew someone who got one.

I’m not sure, but I think the first person who I knew who got a tattoo was a guy named Mike Fitzgerald. This was probably around 1990 or so (I would have been about 16). It was of a crescent man-in-the-moon face in a circle with squiggly black sun rays radiating from it (or did the circle and rays come later?). I remember talking to him about the pain, how the guy messed it up but was going to fix it later, how much it cost, etc. In retrospect, it sounds like he had a pretty typical first tattoo experience. I was fascinated by Mike’s tattoo, and really wanted one, too, but at the time I couldn’t imagine spending $50 or whatever on ANYTHING, let alone something that I was worried I would regret for the rest of my life.

Pretty soon I went to college and became thoroughly entrenched in the punk scene in St. Louis (and beyond), and it seemed like everyone was getting inked, whether it was at a “parlor”, at a party with a homemade “gun” made out of a Walkman motor, or scratched out in a dorm room with a needle dipped in ink from a Bic pen. Even in the middle of all of that, I still couldn’t decide on anything that would be worth committing to or spending money on. At least that’s what I told people; I think I was mostly just scared to do it.

Drawing fake tattoos, on the other hand, was much easier! They could be huge, scary, cool, and/or completely stupid, and even if you drew them with a Sharpie, they’d eventually be gone! You could have a new one every time you played a show!

I can think of half a dozen instances off the top of my head of my friends and I going out in public with crudely scrawled marker tattoos. Pictured here is me “singing” with my band at the time, The Meat Sisters, at a DIY punk show in Springfield, MO in some unused office space, in summer of 1993. The fake tattoo on my arm is a chunky circle-A anarchy symbol flanked by two skulls with mohawks, accompanied by the text “HARD CORE”. On my leg is the burning wheel logo of Krishnacore band Shelter, with the message “KRISHNA RULES”. Both were supposed to be ironic: the skulls, mohawks, anarchy symbols, etc., being total punk clichés, and “religious punk” being a bit of an oxymoron, at least as far as I was concerned.

I still think the “hard core” design, which I originally drew for the label of the B-side of the Meat Sisters 7″ EP “Undermining America’s Traditional Values” (Synergy Records), would make a kick-ass tattoo… But I’m still not hard core enough to get it.

Er spiritualisme virkelig så uhipt?
Er det sprekeste vi kan lete opp av religiøse artister en halvnaken Venke Knutson? Han karen som står på Majorstuatrappen og spiller gitar og synger om Jesus er tross alt mer sjarmerende.
Christiancore kan vel alle være enige i at suger, til tross for at P.O.D. hadde et par småcatchy hits en periode virker det som den kristne popfraksjonen har trukket seg tilbake til egne rekker.
For sedvanlig r’n'b med gospelinfluenser kan jeg faktisk ikke telle. Man kan jo strengt tatt ikke benekte at den nye popen, dvs. hip hop og r’n'b, kommer derfra. Faen, den gamle popen kom jo derfra også. Argumentet mitt faller på sin egen urimelighet, tross alt. Men

For de av oss som hører på denslags, virker krishnacore fortsatt som et av få steder hvor religiøse holder tritt med paraplysjangeren forøvrig. Baby Gopal var kanskje ikke det beste eksempelet på bra krishnacore, men det har sin sjarm syns jeg. (Bemerk klassisk 90s kameraføring, og ikke minst hardcorefashion ‘95-style!)

Sri Kesava var en gjenganger i amerikansk hardcore en periode, etter Baby Gopal tok hun opp med Ray Cappo og hade ikke-sex en periode i tempel, før de la ut på diverse Shelter-turneer sammen. Hun spilte bass (hva ellers?) i Shelter og også i senere Youth of Today reunion-turneer. Til de flestes forferdelse, mye pga. oppvarmingsacten hennes. Sri solo er nemlig mye bedre på skive enn live (som undertegnede fikk oppleve i Vänersborg en gang sent på 90-tallet). Kanskje er det like greit at hun har gått over til å gjøre progkrishnamusikk istedet. Så slipper hun å være med neste gang Youth of Today har reunionturné (det er vel ikke lenge til neste gang).

Da foretrekker jeg fortsatt Shelter. Til tross for at Ray Cappo seiler opp som en av indiemusikkens mest reaksjonære, forvirrende og ikke minst selvmotsigende personligheter.

Så kan vi bare vente på at 108 skal gjøre en tredje konsert i Oslo, slik at en viss fan kan ikle seg bleie, male seg med blå maling og storme gjennom publikum, klatre opp på scenen og stagedive, for så på mystisk vis forsvinne.

ps. Egentlig passende å legge inn denne (igjen). Mest fordi jeg fant et klipp fra en konsert jeg faktisk var på, synd jeg ikke syns igrunnen.

O 108 acaba de iniciar sua primeira turnê pela América do Sul em Quito (Equador) no dia 18 de abril. De lá partiram para Bogotá (Colômbia), Santiago (Chile) e Buenos Aires (Argentina) e no dia 24 desembarcam por aqui com suporte da Hurry Up! Records. A banda passará por Rio de Janeiro (24/04), Espírito Santo (25), Minas Gerais (26) e São Paulo (27) onde tocará no festival Animal Liberation Fest III ao lado de Rethink, Overstate, Good Intentions e Still Strong. chiveta trocou uma idéia com o vocalista Rob Fish/Rasaraja, que não foi lá muito simpático, e entre outras coisas fizemos a pergunta abaixo:

A história do 108 se cruza com tantas outras bandas que fizeram história, como Inside Out, Quicksand, Seaweed, Burn e Shelter. Por que as bandas que vocês tocam se tornam lendárias?
Acho que as pessoas simplesmente gostam das bandas. Todas elas eram únicas, musicalmente, nas letras e na postura ascética, e eu acho que as pessoas apreciam bandas que fazem as coisas do seu jeito e não se conformam ou tentam ser como alguma outra.
