One does not have to look very deeply into the life of Kurt Cobain to see that the spirit that inspired him was not the Sprit of God.  Let the reader be forewarned, examining the life of Kurt Cobain is like lifting the lid off of a cesspool.  Amidst all of the glamour and fame that is associated with being a rock “star,” Cobain’s life was filled with utter hopelessness and despair.

Cobain the Devil Worshipper

For starters, Kurt Cobain made no qualms about who he was serving when he made it known publicly that his stated goal was to “get stoned and worship Satan” Cobain’s worship of Satan manifested itself in a multiplicity of ways.  Cobain, like other Satanists, also had a penchant for the desecration of churches.  Cobain, with his bass player Chris Novoselic, spray-painted “GOD IS GAY” on a church building (Ibid. pp. 57, 165).   Cobain, according to Rolling Stone, would also spray-paint “HOMO SEXUAL SEX RULES” on a bank.  Rolling Stone further reported that Other favorite graffiti included “GOD IS GAY” and “ABORT CHRIST” (Rolling Stone, Inside the Heart & Mind of Nirvana, by Michael Azerrad, April 16, 1992).

Cobain “decorated” his apartment as he explained, “with baby dolls hanging by their necks with blood all over them” (Ibid. p. 54).   Rolling Stone would further report that “Cobain made a satanic-looking doll and hung it from a noose in his window” (Rolling Stone, Inside the Heart & Mind of Nirvana, by Michael Azzerad, April 16, 1992).

Cobain’s interest in the occult would eventually lead him into a relationship with occultist William Burroughs.  Stephen Davis, the biographer of the Led Zeppelin saga “Hammer of the Gods”, compares Burroughs to Satanist Aleister Crowley, stating:

“Like Crowley, Burroughs was an urbane and genial human Lucifer, a modern magus, a legendary addict, and an artist whose influence extended far beyond literature to music, painting and film.” (Stephen Davis, Hammer of the Gods, Ballantine Books, New York, 1985, p. 237).

Burroughs also associated with Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and, ironically, it was Burroughs who first christened hard rock with the label “Heavy Metal” (Ibid.  p. 104).  Burroughs claimed that he first became demon possessed after killing his wife. Cobain would seek out Burroughs’ services seeking his collaboration on a music project (Op. Cit. Sandford, p. 255).  In a Rolling Stone interview, Cobain would later underscore as one of the highlights of his life that of “Meeting William Burroughs and doing a record with him” (Kurt Cobain: The Rolling Stone Interview, By David Fricke, January 27, 1994).  Such was Burroughs’ influence on  Cobain that, “William S. Burroughs received ‘special thanks’ on In Utero for being a cherished inspiration to Cobain (op. cit. Teen Spirit, Chuck Crisafulli, p. 84).

Besides William Burroughs, Cobain was “obsessed with Anton LaVey” (Mojo Magazine, Sept. 1999, p. 86). Anton LaVey was the founder of the Church of Satan and the author of the Satanic Bible.  So obsessed was Cobain with Satanist Anton LaVey that he sought to enlist LaVey by having him play cello on Nirvana’s Nevermind album!  Cobain’s involvement in witchcraft and Satanism is a fitting explanation as to the source of his inspiration and the uncanny ability he had for coming up with alluring and seductive hooks that so frantically enticed Nirvana’s fans.  Cobain is described as “stumbling on melodies by means he himself didn’t fully understand.” (op. cit. Sanders, p. 70).  In the occult, this is referred to as automatic writing is a process wherein a demonic being channels poetry or lyrics through a human being in an effort to negatively effect society.  This is surely what took place through Cobain, the willing and twisted medium for satanic forces.  Even the legendary guitarist Chuck Berry would exclaim, “he had a touch most guitarists would kill for” (Ibid., p. 71).  While “kill for” might be a stretch, sell one’s soul for is far more fitting.

Cobain the Drug Addict

Cobain had a special love for drugs.  Heroin was one of his drugs of choice.  BAM magazine noted that not only would Cobain nod off in “mid-sentence,” but also “the pinned pupils, sunken cheeks, and scabbed, sallow skin suggest something more serious than fatigue” (op. cit. Azzerad, Rolling Stone, p. 34 ).  Sadly, if Cobain hadn’t ended his life with a shotgun blast to the head, it would have most likely still ended with a heroin overdose.  After his death, the toxicology report confirmed that:

“along with traces of Valium, there were 1.52 milligrams of the drug [heroin] in his blood, three times the normal fatal dose” (op. cit. Sandford  p. 10).

Nick Kent claimed that those “strangely undiagnosable” stomach “Problems” that Cobain claimed to experience were “almost certainly” a result of Cobain’s years of drug abuse:

“… the years he spent punishing his intestines with all manner of cheesy pain pills washed down with most disgusting codeine—infected cough medicines available almost certainly provided the direct reason why his poor old guts ached so viscously” (Nick Kent, The Dark Stuff, DA Capo Press, New York, 1994, p. 341).

To support his drug habits, it has been alleged that Cobain “sold to the deadbeats on Heron Street, or at least engaged in a drugs-for sex traffic in order to support his habits” (op. cit. Sandford, p. 51).

Cobain the Homosexual

Cobain himself admitted, “I’m definitely gay in spirit”, as well as “I probably could be bisexual,” and admitted to a close friend that “he’d had sex with three or four men’ (Ibid. pp.268-269).  His widow, Courtney Love, indicated that his homosexual escapades went well beyond that of three or four men when she claimed that he’d “made out with half the guys in Seattle” (Ibid. p. 359).  Cobain would utilize his fame as a platform to showcase his perversity and influence others thereby.  Not only would he publicly French kiss his bass player on Saturday night live, but he would also publicly display his perverted penchant for cross-dressing.  Cobain carried with him perverted pornographic pictures of women in various poses with animals and displayed behavior that is too deviant and grotesque for this writer to further describe.

Cobain’s Murderous Heart and the Occult

Such was the enormity of Cobain’s ego that he would lash out at those sources that would question him.  Cobain wanted to murder a female journalist named Lynn Hirschberg who wrote of his wife unfavorably in Vanity Fair when calling into question her alleged use of cocaine while pregnant.  Cobain breathed murderous threats:

“I’m going to kill this women with my bare hands.  I’m going to stab her to death.  First I’m going to take her dog and slit its guts out in front of her and then [expletive deleted] all over her and stab her to death.” (op. cit. Sandford., p. 172)

Cobain would not end up killing Hirschberg with his “bare hands”, but would continue to nurse his murderous hatred toward her until the end of his life.  In fact, rather than killing her with his “bare hands”, Cobain sought to do her in by enlisting the forces of Satan to do his bidding by utilizing his black magic.  Sandford explains:

“At the very end of his life, Cobain was engaged in elaborate calculations, with the aid of a book on magic numbers, to determine a formula to ‘hex the journalist Lynn Hirschberg’ (Ibid. p. 172).

Cobain the Hater

Cobain’s murderous thoughts went far beyond that of murdering Lynn Hirschberg, but extended to his wife.  At one point he had to be persuaded not to kill Courtney Love (Ibid. p. 249).  Cobain also had a fierce hatred for humanity in general.  The Word of God tells us that Satan is a murderer and was such from the beginning.  Cobain, like his father the devil, held such a deep-seated hatred for humanity that he declared “ninety-nine per cent of humanity could be shot if it was up to me”, he maintained that only “one or two people” were worth saving (Ibid. p. 257).  In his suicide note found after his own self-murder, he wrote, “I’ve become hateful toward all humans in general” (Ibid. p. 333).  Cobain would demonstrate this hatred toward even many of his fans with both spitting upon them at concerts, as well as derogatory comments.

Cobain was pivotal in further undermining any residue of moral foundation that was left in many of those who were initiated into his style of music.  Sandford points out that Nirvana used their music as a tool of “subversion of traditional values”:

“Nirvana and the new fauna of Seattle rock shared a number of attitudes and taste, including a form of exoticism centered on punk, a public display of apathy, a disinterest in work, the cult of feminism, and the subversion of traditional values via music” (Ibid. pp. 104-105).

Even Cobain’s posturing as some kind of feminist was betrayed by his lack of sensitivity and the utter brutish way he treated women.  One woman describing her experience with Cobain stated:

“Kurt rammed his hand hard between my legs.  It was terrifying…He was panting like a dog, and there was a froth of spit around his lips.  I yelled at him to stop and he laughed at me.  With one hand he backed me up against the wall and the other he pushed into me.  If [the other couple] hadn’t come back when they did, he would have raped me.” (Ibid. p. 90).

This same woman goes on to state that, “as far as I’m concerned, all the stories about Kurt-the-feminist are a sick joke.  He hated women.  No one who does what he did has a right to any respect” (Ibid. p. 91).  Such reports of his demeaning attitude and brutal treatment of women are not isolated, but numerous.  Cobain was a devilishly wicked person who would often even torment his other band members.  Many of those who knew Cobain claimed that there was something incredibly evil about him that would sometimes manifest physically.  One of his peers who attended school with Cobain explained that there was,

“a kind of menace about him.  When he gave you that blinkered look, it was straight out of the exorcist or one of those Satanic-worship films.’’ (Ibid. p. 23).

Press Association reporter Graham Wright has stated that “Kurt went from Dr. Jekyl to Mr. Hyde in the space of a minute.” (Ibid. p. 246).  This kind of manifestation should have not been shocking, but expected from Cobain, who himself admitted as documented earlier that he had set out to “worship Satan.”

One of his band members describes him as one who could be transformed from a ball of indifference to a “little Hitler” in an instant.  Yet another described entertaining him as, “like living with the devil” (Ibid. p. 53).  That all of Cobain’s antics were not simply a charade, but truly part of a sad tragedy that was his life is evident from the fact that sometimes these demonic manifestations would end in tears and even suicide attempts.  Bruce Pavitt, co-owner of Sub Pop Records (Nirvana’s early label), stated that in Rome during a concert Cobain nearly committed suicide on stage:

“After four or five songs, he quit playing and climbed up the speaker column and was going to jump off.  The bouncers were freaking out, and everybody was just begging him to come down.  And he was saying, ‘No, no, I’m just going to dive.’ He had really reached his limit.  People literally saw a guy wig out in front of them who could break his neck if he didn’t get it together” (op. cit. Rolling Stone, Azzerad, April 16^th 1992).

Sandford further describes this rather bizarre incident wherein Cobain became like an animal on stage:

“For a quarter of an hour Cobain clambered through the rafters, clawed the curtains, swung from a chandelier and ape like, prattled at the crowd.  According to Azerrad, ‘He wound up backstage, where someone from the venue was arguing with their tour manager over whether Kurt had broken some microphones.  Kurt grabbed both mikes, flung them to the ground, and began stomping on them.  ‘now they’re broken,’ he said.  Then Cobain announced he was leaving the group, ‘shrieked like a beast’ at Channing, and burst into tears” (op. cit. Sandford, p. 134).

His widow, after his suicide, would state that “Kurt had a lot of personal inner [expletive deleted] demons, a lot of frailties and physical ailments.” Sandford would state in his biography, “He was a diffident, yet aggressive personality who struggled with demons that drove and tormented him” (Ibid. p. 97).  The sad irony is that the demonic forces he had opened his life up to more and more in his pursuit for fame and success were the very demonic forces that would later inspire him to take his own life.  Goldberg claims that “Kurt saw innumerable Doctors and therapists” (Cobain, A Rolling Stone Press Book, 1994, p. 87).  No amount of secular psychologizing could exorcise the demonic forces.  Had Cobain not been a rock “star” he probably would have long ago been committed to a mental institution.  Being the commodity that he was for his record label, he was used by them, as he was by the devil himself.  This, though, was a two way street as Cobain profited from both the devil and his record company, or so he thought.  Perhaps Cobain was deceived into believing that the only way he could escape the demonic world that so tormented him was by blowing his brains out.  Sadly, though, perhaps the only one he hated more than humanity itself was God, and he was not about to turn to the Lord.  Cobain had a supreme hatred for all authority, especially that of God’s.  This was demonstrated at the beginning of this article.

The Destiny of the Damned

Many would view it as a sad irony that the leader of a band called Nirvana would end his life with a horrific suicide.  But as Gina Arnold, author of Route 666: The Roads to Nirvana, admitted, “People talk about Kurt Cobain’s wonderful sense of irony.  There isn’t any irony.”  I would take it a step further and say there never was any Nirvana.  Nirvana was never really heaven in the first place.

Truly, there is no irony.  Cobain’s concept of Nirvana from the get go was actually a hell.  Crisafulli comments on Cobain’s concept of Nirvana in his song “Paper Cuts”,

“The subject seems to sing that he has found his “nirvana” and is in a contented state in a place where all needs are met and there are no outside worries.  But to any outside observer, the subject has simply gone insane in a filthy, one room prison” (op. Cit., Crisfulli, Teen Spirit, p. 23).

Although the subject of Cobain’s song had no choice as to his or her condition (the song was partly based on children who were tormented and confined to a closet), Cobain chose to live a hellish Christ rejecting existence filled with drugs, hatred, vandalism, blasphemy and devil worship.

This too was not ironic, you see, the concept of Nirvana includes the termination of existence.  Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary submits this definition of Nirvana:

“1.  In Hinduism, a blowing out, or extinction, of the flame of life; reunion with Brama.” (Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary, p. 1214)

Cobain, the leader of the Grunge movement, would sit down to write his suicide note in his home, wherein unlike prior times nobody would be around to coax him out of it.  He addressed the suicide note to “Boddah”, his invisible “friend” (op. cit. Sanders, p. 328).  One of the reasons it seems that he committed suicide was that the devil was no longer delivering the goods in regard to musical inspiration.  In his suicide note he would write, “I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing, for too many years now.”  Sandford has stated, “In his suicide note, Cobain despaired that his muse had flown south…” (Ibid. p. 361).  This has been Satan’s Modus Operandi from the beginning and certainly through the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Satan seeks out those lonely hearts who are seeking fame, recognition, acceptance, affluence, power, or all of the above and uses such a one to his own perverse glory and then spits them and discards them for eternity.

As we can see, Satan has been on the scene inspiring self-mutilation and suicide long before Cobain, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols or Marilyn Manson came upon the scene.  Sadly, it just so happens that through mass media and rock music, Satan has been able to inspire millions of impressionable young people to the same destructive ends.  Satan also understands that he often gets more mileage out of a dead rock “star” than a living one by indelibly leaving his mark on an era.  Jimi Hendrix, who admitted demon possession, also was deceived by the satanic lie that it is better to burn out than to fade away.  Hendrix said before his premature death, “It’s funny the way most people love the dead…Once you’re dead you are made for life.”

Cobain was definitely tormented.  Sandford imagined the scene just before the suicide:

“a millionaire drug addict sitting alone in his room confronted by the demons and vestiges of his youth, and no way to exorcise them but with a gun” (Ibid. p. 11).

Cobain’s suicide is not only explicable by factors of his own admission, like a sense of desperation due to lack of musical inspiration, but other sinister factors as well.  Cobain’s suicide was a result of dying by the very sword he wielded so irresponsibly in his lyrics.  Cobain often glamorized and exposed young impressionable minds to the idea of suicide through his music.  Cobain would write a song on his last album called, “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die.”  On his album In Utero, Cobain would sing, “look on the bright side is suicide.”   Cobain would also sing, “Monkey see monkey do/I don’t know why I’d rather be dead than cool” (“Stay Away”).   The same demonic forces that inspired Cobain to take his life channeled lyrics through him to encourage impressionable and depressed youth to take their lives as well.  In Cobain’s suicide note, Cobain would echo the sentiments of another rock “star”, Neil Young, stating, “so remember—it’s better to burn out than to fade away.”   Are we so blind as to claim that lyrics do not influence fans?  In this case, a rock star died after penning lyrics glorifying early death by another rock star.  The first song Cobain would learn on guitar was Back in Black by the overtly satanic AC/DC.  Cobain would end his life and career with words from Into the Black by Neil Young.  Sadly, after Cobain’s suicide, many would remember Cobain’s words.  Just as he wrote, “Monkey see monkey do/ I don’t know why I’d rather be dead than cool”, a rash of copycat suicides followed as the youth he had long deceived followed in his foot steps.   Nirvana fan Daniel Casper, upon returning from Cobain’s vigil, ended his life with a bullet to the head.  Another 16-year-old fan locked herself in her room, and while she listened to Nirvana’s music, put a bullet into her head.  Sadly, such examples could be multiplied.  Andy Rooney, formerly of 60 Minutes, said succinctly, “When the spokesman for his generation blows his head off, what is the generation supposed to think?”(Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes, April, 1994).

Cobain lamented in his suicide note that he was turning into a “miserable, self-destructive death rocker.”  Not only this, Cobain also “expressed his terror that Frances Bean’s [his daughter] life would turn out like his own” (op. cit. Cobain, A Rolling Stone Book, p. 86

Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor was a little closer to the truth when she lamented, “Now he’s gone and joined that stupid club.  I told him not to join that stupid club” (Newsweek magazine, April 18, 1994).  The “stupid club”, as Cobain’s mother refers to it, is in reference to Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and other dead rock “stars” who died at the early age of 27.

Nirvana Vs. ‘Guitar Hero 5′, ¡Fight!
Érase una vez un juego musical que nos permitía montar un grupo de rock ficticio y perpetrar covers de las canciones rockeras más famosas. Hasta aquí todo bien, las ventas acompañaban y una generación entera de jovenzuelos inocentes descubrían las bondades de la música de Satán, cosa que siempre mola. Sí, hablo de ‘Guitar Hero’.

Pero hete aquí que después de que se acabaran las canciones de tintes rockeros conocidas por el gran público se encontraron ante la necesidad de innovar y dejando modos de juego a un lado, una opción clara pasaba por incorporar a conocidos músicos y recrearlos en 3D.

Primero fue Slash, luego llegaron los Aerosmith y progresivamente hemos llegado hasta el mismísimo Kurt Cobain. Un icono, célebre por su afición a las armas cargadas además de por sus canciones, que representó el despertar de los noventa y el desengaño de principios de la década. Sí, Kurt Cobain es un personaje desbloqueable de un videojuego musical que va por su quinta entrega y, obviamente, al resto de Nirvana no les ha hecho ni puñetera gracia.

Han sido Krist Novoselic y Dave Grohl los que se suman a la líder de Hole, Courtney Love, al sumar su malestar por el uso que Activision y ‘Guitar Hero 5’ hacen del músico fallecido. En su opinión estaba bien que una versión tridimensional de Kurt Cobain interpretase sus canciones pero la cosa pierde sentido cuando se convierte en un personaje desbloqueable y permite tocar mil y un temas que no fueron del propio compositor.

“Queremos que la gente sepa que estamos tristes y decepcionados por el modo en el que la imagen de Kurt se proyecta en ‘Guitar Hero’. Sabíamos que su imagen sería usada en dos canciones de Nirvana pero no teníamos ni idea de la posibilidad de que los jugadores pudieran desbloquear al personaje.“

“Eso permite que pueda ser usado con cualquier canción que quiera el jugador. Instamos a Activision a que haga lo correcto y bloquee de nuevo al personaje de Kurt. Kurt Cobain escribió canciones que contenían un montón de significado para gente de todo el mundo, para una generación entera. Y creemos que merece algo mejor.”

Llegados a este punto supongo que estaría bien posicionarse y pese a que mola lo salvaje que es poder elegir a Kurt y hacerle tocar un tema de las Vixen, no puedo evitar compartir la opinión de Grohl y los demás.

Kurt Cobain dejó un puñado de canciones que hablaban de cómo se sentía parte de la sociedad de aquel momento, de la juventud desengañada, frustrada y hasta triste. Da un poco de lástima ver en que se convierten los iconos con el tiempo.

Eso sí… si Kurt Cobain sale en el juego y Activision ha pagado los derechos de imagen (que deben ser una bestialidad), tiene todo el derecho a hacer con ellos lo que quieran, independientemente de si es lo correcto moralmente o lo correcto comercialmente. No se si hacerlo controlable es correcto a nivel humano, por aquello de lo que fue, pero seguro que es correcto a nivel comercial y en este mundo manda el dinero, ¿no?.

If only there was an election administrator that got behind Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). Even though she said she “didn’t like” RCV, I say that Pat McCarthy did a good job as Pierce County Auditor with the 2008 election in general. It was a colossal election year with over eighty percent voter turnout. And unlike almost every county in the state, Pierce basically held three elections last November; there was the new top-two, poll voting, and RCV. There were some problems but all three efforts were handled without any major crashes.

Of course RCV was a scapegoat for causing long lines, delaying election results and triggering a major pandemic. Just kidding on the plague, but it does seem like RCV was blamed for all kinds of things! My point is RCV was so new and unknown that it was easy to throw unfounded blame at the reform. And the auditor even pointed some of the blame at RCV.

McCarthy caused another stir herself when she inserted a voter satisfaction survey into the mail-ballot envelope already thick with paper. She was also on that ballot as a candidate for County Executive. Her opponents cried foul that the survey was electioneering because, as Auditor, her name was on it. Many folks took the survey as tainted and didn’t send it back, but others responded to the question regarding RCV – a majority returning the survey saying they didn’t like RCV.

I speak to this reaction in my last post and it’s at the heart of the proposition “If Only?” I can only imagine, instead of a survey, what if there was an envelope insert that actually explained Why RCV? The survey was included in an auditors report regarding the costs of implementing RCV, so wishing for a Why RCV? flier included with ballots is not too lofty a thought.

Such an informational piece could have provided voters with enough information about the benefits of RCV that perhaps they could have compared it to the top-two. Remember last October and all of the negative campaigning? People could hardly wait until the election was over. Here’s a common interchange, last October, between myself and other Washingtonians:

I’m fine – How about you?

I’m OK but I can hardly wait for this election be over!

What do you mean?

I’m tired of all the political TV ads. Is there anything we can do about all the negative campaigning?

Yes there is, it’s called Ranked Choice Voting.

Imagine a world with less negative politicking. In San Francisco, where RCV is used, rival candidates actually endorse each other and some have even co-hosted events!!! Same in Burlington VT, where the local paper said that the RCV campaign was the most positive and issue-oriented election they could remember.

Positive campaigning is the result of the RCV dynamic where candidates are also competing for voters’ second choices. There was markedly less negative campaigning in the Pierce County RCV races.

Repealing RCV is a vote for the top-two, which is a system that exacerbates negative campaigning. Here’s why: with only two choices, the political strategy is to smear your opponent. Some voters might never vote for you, so you might as well make sure they don’t vote for the opposition either.

Like I said in my previous post, voters had RCV thrown in their laps without any real explanation of the benefits of the system. Proponents of Amendment 3 claim RCV is confusing. And if voters are indeed confused, no wonder – they were never really told Why RCV?

Az egyik leghangosabb ellenző Cobain egykori felesége, Courtney Love volt, aki a Twitteren magából kikelve átkozta el a céget, volt férje imidzsének megcsúfolásával vádolta meg a kiadót és perrel fenyegetett. Később a Nirvana két ex-tagja, Krist Novoselic és Dave Grohl is hangot adott ellenérzéseinek a dolog kapcsán.

A kettejük által kiadott sajtónyilatkozatban arra kérték az Activision illetékeseit, hogy Kurt Cobain csak Nirvana-számokat énekelhessen a játékban, azt azonban belátták, hogy jogi útra nem terelhetik a dolgot, hiszen nem rendelkeznek ehhez szükséges jogokkal. Nem úgy, mint Love, aki természetesen egyből perrel kezdte fenyegetni a kiadót.

Az ügyben megszólalt az Activision is: a játék fejlesztését irányító Dan Rosensweig nem érti Cobain özvegyének panaszait.

“Teljesen jogosan használtuk fel Kurt Cobain avatarját a játékban, amit érvényes szerződéssel bizonyítani is tudunk, és az általunk kiállított csekket is beváltották. A magam részéről csak a tényekkel szeretnék foglalkozni, ezek pedig teljesen nyilvánvalóak. Arról, hogy a hagyatékot kezelő Courtney Love és az egykori zenekari tagok közti kommunikáció meglehetősen hiányos, nem tehetek” – mondta Rosensweig.

Rosensweig egyébként igen sajnálja, hogy Grohl és Novoselic nem örül Cobain avatarjának, de úgy gondolja, a kérdést alapvetően nem az Activisionnel, hanem Courtney Love-val kell megbeszélnie a Nirvana két ex-tagjának.

Como habíamos informado anteriormente, los ex-integrantes de Nirvana, Dave Grohl y Krist Novoselic, expresaron su desacuerdo con Activision por la creación de un avatar de Kurt Cobain que los jugadores pueden ocupar de diversas formas, ya sea como vocalista en diversas pistas (no petenecientes a Nirvana), e incluso haciéndolo tocar la guitarra como derecho cuando Kurt era zurdo.

A esta queja se ha sumado el mismo Bon Jovi quien ha comentado acerca del trailer de Cobain interpretando uno de sus temas: “No me parece una buena idea, si alguien hiciera un avatar mío y lo viera cantar con la voz de alguien más, me parecería bastante forzado“.

Mientras la controversia continúa con el avatar de Kurt en Guitar Hero 5, Courtney Love, viuda de Cobain, ha entablado una demanda en contra de Activision ya que alega no haber permitido a esta empresa hacer uso de la imagen de su difunto esposo.

Ok – first off, Activision should definitely be sued if they used his likeness without consent. Duh. It’s a no brainer. They should also be sued if they misled the Cobain Estate – having Kurt as an avatar for Nirvana songs is one thing, but to be able to unlock the character and use it on will is completely different.

But is the fiery vengeance-of-doom backlash led by the blogosphere really necessary?

First, everyone was bitching about Courtney, assuming she OKed it (personally, I’m over the trendiness of Court bashing. Isn’t that just a given yet?). Then, Love denied it saying “We are going to sue the shit out of Activision.” Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic then said they were aware of his likeness being used for their songs only, but they have no control obviously.

Yada, yada, yada. Bored now.

So Cobain might be singing Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” or Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” on teenagers’ and young-twenty-somethings’ TV screens everywhere. If I turn on the game, and play Blink 182’s “The Rock Show” with Kurt on the mic, it’s not like I actually believe that he would’ve ever sang or covered it. IT’S JUST A FUCKING VIDEO GAME PEOPLE. And the legal shit will eventually work itself out.

Ich habe doch bestimmt schon mal erwähnt, daß ich es nie besonders mit Nirvana hatte. Ich fand Kurt Cobain immer irgendwie albern. Dieses ganze “ich will sterben”, “ich ertrage den Erfolg nicht”, “ich bin ja so drogensüchtig”, etc. fand ich irgendwie immer unglaubwürdig. Gut, als er sich dann ins Nirvana geschossen hat (ich Königin des Wortspiels), mußte ich zugeben, daß es irgendwie ganz konsequent war. Aber sonst war das echt alles doch nur Fake… ja genau.

Wie dem auch sei…

Heute bin ich auf der Seite des Guardian auf diesen Blogeintrag gestoßen. Es geht um Guitar Hero und die Tatsache, daß man jetzt einen Kurt Cobain-Avatar singen lassen kann, während man sich abmüht, Tastenfolgen zu drücken, die bestimmt viel komplizierter als die Originalakkorde sind. Was man wohl nicht bedacht hat, als man die Rechte an seinem Bild freigegeben hat, war, das die Avatare auch für andere Lieder einsetzbar sind, wenn man sich auskennt. Das Resultat ist dann Kurt Cobain, der Bon Jovi singt.

Haha, Spaß!!! Ich habe mir zum ersten Mal freiwillig fast ein ganzes Bon Jovi-Lied angehört.

Dann singt die kleine Figur, die eigentlich gar nichts von Kurt Cobain hat, außer daß sie ein grünes Unplugged-Strickjäckchen und eine zerfetzte Jeans trägt, noch ein Bush-Lied. Ich mag Bush, aber ich bin mir sicher, Kurt Cobain hätte sich lieber erschossen, als ein Bush-Lied zu singen. Aaaaaaaaah! Ich bin so lustig.

Nun kommt aber das eigentlich unterhaltsame. Scheinbar behauptet Courtney Love (die ich eigentlich sehr gerne mag), daß Kurt Cobains Bild ohne ihre Erlaubnis verwendet wurde  und daß (wer sonst) Dave Grohl schuld ist. Ich bin mir da aber wirklich nicht ganz sicher. Meinst Du, lieber Farin, Dave Grohl hat die Rechte am Bild von Kurt Cobain? Wenn dann hätte das doch sicher seine Erbin. Und das wäre doch wohl Courtney Love oder seine Tochter (die sich ganz schön gemacht hat). Und die Rechte an den Nirvana-Liedern gehören auch zu einem großen Teil Courtney Love. Meinst Du, sie hat sich so hackestrunzblödgespritzt, daß sie vergessen hat, die Rechte für Guitar Hero freigegeben zu haben? Nein, bestimmt nicht.

Ich habe da mal weiter recherchiert, soll heißen, ich habe Courtney Love bei Google eingegeben und einer der ersten Artikel war dieser. Darin heißt es,

Die Musikerin und Witwe des berühmten Nirvana-Sängers Kurt Cobain hat vor, die Firma Activision zu verklagen. Die Begründung ist die ihrer Meinung nach falsche Darstellung ihres ehemaligen Ehemannes im Videospiel Guitar Hero 5. Obwohl sie informiert war, dass Activision Kurt Cobain ins Spiel integrieren wollte, findet Courtney Love ihn völlig falsch vertreten, sogar “ekeleregend”. Dies sei des Weiteren ein Verstoß gegen vereinbarte Vertragsbedingungen.

Als Plattform für ihren Unmut hat sie scheinbar Twitter auserkoren. Dort schreibt sie: “Für das Protokoll: Dieser Guitar-Hero-Mist verstößt gegen Verträge und wir werden dagegen angehen und angemessen vorgehen.”

Laut Pressetext teilen Cobains ehemalige Nirvana-Bandkollegen, Krist Novoselic und Dave Grohl, ebenfalls Courtneys Meinung über seine Videospiel-Abbildung. Vor allem, dass man im Spiel die Möglichkeit hat, Kurt-Cobain-Lieder von anderen Bands, wie Bon Jovi, nachsingen zu lassen, sei allen Dreien ein Dorn im Auge.

Ich bin ja mal gespannt, wie das noch weiter geht.

Verdient Kurt Cobain, daß sein Gesicht genauso kommerzialisiert wird wie das Antlitz von Che Guevara? So oder so wird es ihm widerfahren. Macht mich das wütend? Geht so. Freut es mich? Nein, eigentlich nicht. Auch wenn ich ihn irgendwie dumm fand, werde ich immer ein bißchen nostalgisch, wenn ich ein Nirvana-Lied höre. Süßer Vogel Jugend denke ich dann. Ach, die alten Zeiten… Will ich, daß meine Erinnerungen zu Comicfiguren werden? Nein, nicht so richtig, auch wenn ich Rockband für ein gutes Spiel halte und ich wirklich Spaß am Schlagzeug habe.

Why Activision “Knows Not What It Means”

There is a big hub bub on the net right now over the use of Kurt Cobain’s likeness as an unlockable character in Guitar Hero 5. This means Cobain can be the front man of your band while you perform the hits of Flava Flav and Bon Jovi.

While that may not initially seem like a big deal- gamers love unlockable characters- anyone familiar with Cobain’s work will get a creepy vibe upon watching this video of Cobain’s doppleganger in action.

And now Cobain’s widow is threatening via Twitter to sue. Activision says she signed off on it. She says she thought his avatar would be on screen only during Nirvana tracks. He said, she said…. blah, blah, blah. Let the courts figure that out.

But Activision could have easily avoided this mini controversy if it took a little bit of time and evaluated how it utilizes the likenesses of rock icons in Guitar Hero. What they have been doing for years is simply paying for the rights for a familiar skin on their 3D models. Like many record companies, they viewed the rock artist as something that can be replicated for profits.

And they were right for a long time. But when they tried to copy the unmimicable anti-rockstar, Kurt Cobain, it blew up in their faces. Nirvana was a revolutionary band, and they forgot that. In many fans’ eyes, Cobain was more than a rock star, his music sparked a culture and way of life.

Oh, and then there’s the fact that Cobain’s suicide note states that the pressure of performing and pretending to have a good time when he wasn’t was a driving factor in his decision to take his own life. That’s OK, Activision says, We’ll just create a digital Cobain to replace you when you’re gone who won’t have those issues and we can all still get rich.

Nirvana’s entrance into the national spotlight sounded the death knell of hair bands and power ballads and introduced the world to a new genre: Alternative Rock. Bands with flamboyant stage shows, finger-blistering guitar solos and crates of hairspray in the trailer, bands like Bon Jovi and Van Halen, lost prominence as the teens began dressing in flannel shirts and baggy pants and listening to “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Cobain’s music was darker, moodier. It was the antithesis of the excess and corporate feel of every pop and pop-rock band from the 1980s. His songs were about conformity, apathy, societal contradictions, love and codependency. Cobain was very much against the macho man image, and even wrote songs like “In Bloom” that point out the irony of a “macho guy” listening to Nirvana because they were popular yet not understanding the meaning of their music.

Guitar Hero, Activision and Neversoft exemplify the irony in that song. This is where that little pit in your stomach comes from when you see Cobain’s image belting out “Shot through the heart, and you’re too blame, baby you give love a bad name,” while an adoring crowd sings along.

The most interesting part of the whole situation is the timing. This comes out at the same time when Guitar Hero’s rival, Rock Band, released an entire rhythm game based on The Beatles to critical acclaim.

Harmonix understood that they would be taking liberties with one of the world’s most cherished bands and went to deep lengths to make sure they paid sufficient reverence to the band. They ensured that the game was more than a quick money grabber by focusing on the Beatles, their music and their message. Harmonix didn’t try to force the Beatles into a Rock Band game… they tried to adapt Rock Band to accommodate The Beatles.

Neversoft and Activision, on the other hand, obviously didn’t put that much care into incorporating Cobain into Guitar Hero 5. It appears as if the Cobain avatar is just running through the same pre-programmed motions as the rest of the avatars in the game. There’s no consideration of his mannerisms, philosophy or his art. It’s cut and paste. There’s no context, and that’s a disservice to Cobain.

In the game he jumps around on stage like he is having the time of his life. In reality the pressure of performing and being the spokesperson for Generation X was too much for him to handle. Sure, Cobain wanted to be a rock star, but felt guilty when he realized that the greenness of the grass was highly overrated and he wasn’t enjoying his success as much as he should.

From his suicide note:
“I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music along with reading and writing for too many years now. I feel guilty beyond words about these things.

For example, when we’re backstage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowds begin, it doesn’t affect me the way in which it did for Freddie Mercury, who seemed to love, relish in the love and adoration from the crowd which is something I totally admire and envy. The fact is, I can’t fool you, any one of you. It simply isn’t fair to you or me. The worst crime I can think of would be to rip people off by faking it and pretending as if I’m having 100% fun.

Sometimes I feel as if I should have a punch-in time clock before I walk out on stage. I’ve tried everything within my power to appreciate it (and I do, God, believe me I do, but it’s not enough). I appreciate the fact that I and we have affected and entertained a lot of people. It must be one of those narcissists who only appreciate things when they’re gone. I’m too sensitive. I need to be slightly numb in order to regain the enthusiasms I once had as a child.”

Maybe this cut & paste tactic could have flown in earlier releases. But as more bands sign up for Guitar Hero and Rock Band as a new format to release their music the medium is becoming a more than just a game. As The Beatles: Rock Band shows, it’s about exposing people to music and art. It’s about interactively listening to music and paying more attention to the subtleties in the song.

But hell, maybe for Guitar Hero it is still only about making a buck. I guess this is the twelfth release within the franchise in four years, if that tells you something.

Activision, how about taking a couple years off and releasing DLC for existing games and spending more time in between titles? Do some soul searching. Figure out exactly where you want Guitar Hero’s place in our culture to be. Or is the franchise is going to end up being the next: “Now That’s What I Call Music #61.” A money maker, for sure, but void of any cultural relevance.

Let’s let surviving Nirvana band members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl have the final word on this subject:

We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate – we have no control whatsoever in that area.

While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in “re-locking” Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future.

It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.

While I’ve been pretty harsh on Activision and Guitar Hero, surely Courtney Love has plenty of blame to share for this fiasco. I’m sure Activision was acting on good faith. Ignorant, maybe. But they didn’t wish to cause harm. Love signed some sort of agreement in the first place then obviously detached herself from the creative process if it took this long for her to make a fuss.

Why didn’t she catch this earlier in development and air her greivences then? On that note, why didn’t any of Activision’s employees pick up on this?

RIP Kurt.

Thao Nguyen with the Get Down Stay Down

Some great news from Thao Nguyen and Laura Veirs: each has new albums coming soon! For Thao Nguyen, it will be a formal recording with her band, The Get Down Stay Down. According a to an announcement on their website, the new album is set for release on October 13 on Kill Rock Stars. Early indications are that it’s damn good. Laura Veirs

Laura Veirs has also finally announced her new record, July Flame, which is set for a North American release on January 19, 2010 via Raven Marching Band Records. According to a recent tweet from Decemberists’ front man, Colin Meloy, “it’s his favorite record of 20??” (due to uncertainty of the release date).  There is not a formal, promotional release from that recording, so I’ll give you one that was used to promote Saltbreakers (2007):

OTHER NEWS…

The Ellen DeGeneres show is being sued for not obtaining the proper licenses/permission for airing over a thousand recordings used for her ‘dance in’ segments. I am not a fan of her show, but I hope they win that suit. I’ve never understood the copyright laws with regard to radio and television licensing. How does music get heard otherwise?  and doesn’t it benefit recording artists if people hear something new on the Ellen show?  Oh wait, they might record it… sorry, my bad.

In a related piece, Nick Hornby, the author of High Fidelity, captures reality for music consumers now. He, like many of us, believes we’re better for the new changes in the music biz. Oh, and he loves music blogs too.  His experiences with blogs are very akin to my own, so this piece really stuck with me after reading it. Many of the very good blogs provide a service and entry into a world that would be lost to many of us if the music world worked like it did 20 years ago. Hurray, progress!

Or am I being too hasty?

Courtney Love,  and former Nirvana members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic,  aren’t too happy about Activision’s depiction of Cobain in Guitar Hero 5.  Apparently, Cobain is a sell out… okay, I am being cheeky, but you can utilize his avatar and play songs from the likes of Bon Jovi and Bush. I hate to sound flippant, but it’s a good thing he can’t see this!

Si señores, y es que tal y como publicaba ayer el periódico “El Mundo”, la viuda de Kurt Cobain, el rubito carismático de Nirvana que se suicidó, arremete contra Activision en una denuncia por ver a su queridito tokando temas de otros…

Si es que muerto eres un vendido chico...

Courtney Love, viendo que en el videojuego era posible ver a Kurt tocando temas de Bon Jovi se asoció junto a dos antiguos miembros de Nirvana para dictaminar que “Habría sido penoso para él soportarlo” y amenazar a Activision pidiendoles que retiren el novedoso Guitar Hero 5 del mercado para modificarlo y quitar esas escenas de Kurt.

Lo que pocos saben es que precisamente estos tres recibieron por vender los derechos del muerto y de la banda virtual en general 4 millones de dólares, de los cuales la mitad se los llevo inmerecederamente Courtney Love que en Nirvana pinta tanto como Yoko Ono en los Beatles: Solo el rollete de uno de ellos.

Esta mujer parece estar acosada por una docena de querellas y tanta es la presion de algunos de los juicios que según la fuente del periódico en cuestion “podría incluso llevarle a la carcel alguna de estas querellas”.

Lo que hace necesitar dinero que ni al rubito lo dejan en paz…

კურტის ოჯახი არასოდეს გამოირჩეოდა დიდი ფინანსური შესაძლებლობებით, მაგრამ პატარა კობეინის ბავშვობას თამამად შეგვიძლია ვუწოდოთ ბედნიერი. ვენდი ყოველთვის ცდილობდა,რომ მის შვილები გამორჩეულები ყოფილიყვნენ, სახლიდან გასვლის წინ მუდამ საგულდაგულოდ უვარცხნიდა კურტს თმას და მაინც იმ სვიტერს აცმევდა, რომელზეც ალერგია ჰქონდა, ნუ ისე ძალიან უხდებოდა-ო. ბავშვობიდანვე გამორჩეული ბავშვი იყო, უფრო კონკრეტულად 2 წლის ასაკში დაიწყო მისი მუსიკალური ნიჭის გამოვლენა და ამას დამატებული ძალიან ძალიან აქტიური ბავშვი იყო : )), ექიმებმა ჰიპერაქტიულობის დიაგნოზი დაუსვეს. ხშირად უტყაპუნებდნენ რადგან არასოდეს არ იცოდა ზომა თამაშისას : D ჰიპერაქტიულობის გარდა ბავშვობიდან ქრონიკული ბრონქიტი ტანჯავდა (რამაც შემდგომ უკვე საბოლოოდ მოუღო ბოლო).

ესეც პატარა ჰიპერაქტიული კურტი : ))

7 წლის კურტს დეიდამ აჩუქა პატარა ბარაბანი. რათქმაუნდა ძალიან გაუხარდა, კისერზე ჩამოიკიდა და ამ ბარაბნით აყრუებდა მიმდებარე ქუჩის მიდამოებს. ხან რას მღეროდა, ხან რას, მაგრამ ყველაზე ხშირად The Beatles-ის სიმღერებს ასრულებდა თავის პატარა ბარაბანზე. ( ძალიან მეცინება როცა წარმოვიდგენ, 7 წლის კობეინი პატარა ბარაბნით, როგორ ასრულებს რაიმე სიმღერას : )) )

ძალინ არ უყვარდა პოლიციელები. ჯერ კიდევ 3 წლის ასაკში, უცენზურო ტექსტის მქონე სიმღერის(ან სიმღერების) შესრულებას იწყებდა, როცა პოლიციელებს დაინახავდა. ცოტახნის შემდეგ კოკა-კოლის ქილებს ესროდა ე.წ. წესრიგის დამცველებს, მალევე აუცილებელი ჟესტი – შუა თითის ამოწევა ,,დაამუღამა”. ( ამაზე კიდევ უფრო მეცინება რომ წარმოვიდგენ : D) ისე კურტს დისკომფორტს უქმნიდა, მამაკაცები რომ ინტერესით უცერდნენ მის ლამაზ ქერა და ცისფერთვალება დედიკოს. ამის გამო ერთხელ პოლიციელსაც კი ეჩხუბა.

მეორე კლასში აღმოაჩინეს, რომ კურტი ძალიან კარგად ხატავდა. ყველა აღფრთოვანებული იყო მისი ნახატებით, თუმცა თითონ ვერაფერ განსაკუთრებულს ვერ ხედავდა. ერთხელ ჰელოუინიდან დაბრუნებულმა, მოიტანა გაზეთის ეგზემპლარი სადაც მისი პატარა შედევრები იყო დაბეჭდილი, საკმაოდ გაბრაზდა და თან გაკვირვებული იყო, რადგან ამ გაზეთში უფროსკლასელების ნამუშევრები იბეჭდებოდა. ვენდი იხსენებს: “მისი დამოკიდებულება უფროსებთან – სწორედ ამის გამო შეიცვალა. ყველა ეუბნებოდა, რომ მოსწონდათ მისი ნამუშევარი, ის კი მუდამ უკმაყოფილო იყო”

ესეც მისი ერთ-ერთი პირველი ნამუშევარი. მგონი დამეთანხმებით, რომ მეორე კლასელისთვის არც ისე ცუდია.

3 კლასში ახალ რაღაცაზე ოცნებობდა – ეს იყო როკ-ვარსვკლავობა, ისე მერე ცოტახნით კასკადირობაც უნდოდა )). ერთხელ ლეიბები, ბალიშები და მსგავსი ნივთები მოაგროვა სახლის წინ და სახურავიდან უნდოდა გადმოხტომა ( გადმოხტა თუ არა ისტორიისთვის უცნობია).

ხანდახან პატარა კურტი ბიძია ჩაკსაც შეუვლიდა ხოლმე, რომელსაც თავისი როკ-ჯგუფი ჰყავდა და სარდაფშიც მთელი სტუდია ჰქონდა მოწყობილი. ჩაკი დააჭერინებდა დისშვილს მიკროფონს და რაიმე ჩანაწერს ჩაურთავდა. ვენდის შემორჩა კასეტა, რომელზეც ოთხი წლის კურტის ხმაა ჩაწერილი. ჩანაწერში იგი მღერის, ხოლო როცა გონია, რომ არავინ უსმენს, მიკროფონში ჩუმად ამბობს ფრიად უცენზურო სიტყვებს, რომელთა დაკონკრეტებისგან, თქვენის ნებართვით, თავს შევიკავებ. : D

ერთხელ მშობლებმა კურტს პატარა დასარტყამი მოწყობილობა აჩუქეს, სახელად – მიკი მაუსი. იგი მაშინათვე “ჩაუჯდა” თავის ახალ საკუთრებას და სკოლის შემდეგ, მანამ ურახუნებდა ჯოხებს საბრალო “მიკის”, სანამ საბოლოოდ არ გატეხა.

ჰო ვთქვი, ზედმეტად აქტიური ბავშვი იყო-თქო : ))

ოჯახში ორი უკიდურესობა იყო – ერთი ის რომ ვენდი, ზედმეტ ყურადღებას აქცევდა ე.წ. ვიზუალურ მხარეს, ხოლო მამა ზედმეტ ყურადღებას აქცევდა სპორტს. ერთიც და მეორეც კურტისთვის უცხო იყო და მის ხასიათთან სრულიად შეუსაბამო. ვენდი არც იმის უფლებას აძლევდა შვილებს, რომ საეჭვო ოჯახის მქონე თანატოლებთან ემეგობრათ. ძალიან მომწონს კურტის სიტყვები ამასთან დაკავშირებით, რომ როგორც შემდეგ მიხვდა, ეს ხალხი იყო  “გაცილებით უფრო მაგარი ტიპები – ვიდრე მაღალი კლასის წარმომადგენელი ბავშვები – უფრო მიწიურები, უფრო ჭუჭყიანები”.

გადავიდა კურტი მესამე კლასში და ახალი მისწრაფებები გაუჩნდა. ძალიან უნდოდა დასარტყამ ინსტრუმენტზე ესწავლა დაკვრა და გაკვეთილებზეც დადიოდა. ,, მე მინდოდა რომ რინგო სტარი ვყოფილიყავი, არა ლენონი უფრო მომწონდა, ოღონდ ლენონი დრამზე ” – იხსენებდა კურტი. რთი პერიოდი სკოლის გუნდშიც უკრავდა, მაგრამ ნოტებს ვერაფრით ვერ სწავლობდა. ელოდებოდა, სანამ მის წინ მჯდომი ბიჭი მთელ სიმღერას შეისწავლიდა და მერე მისი მიბაძვით მოქმედებდა.

1974 წელს ექიმებმა ADHD(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) დაუდგინეს და რიტალინი გამოუწერეს.

წელს შვიდიოდე წლის კურტმა დედას სთხოვა, მისთვის საშობაოდ ხუთ დოლარად ღირებული სათამაშო პისტოლეტი ეჩუქებინა და გააფრთხილა, რომ სხვა საჩუქარს კატეგორიულად არ მიიღებდა. ეგებ მაშინ იგრძნო პირველად ვენდიმ, რამდენად პრობლემური შვილი ეზრდებოდა…

უღრუბლო ბავშვობის ხანა 1975 წელს დასრულდა, როდესაც კურტის მშობლები განქორწინდნენ. ვენდის და დონალდს პრობლემები ქონდათ: ქმარი ძირითადად დროს ბეისბოლსა და კალათბურთს უთმობდა, ცოლი კი დარწმუნებული არ იყო, ოდესმე მაინც თუ უყვარდა ეს კაცი.
ახლა ორივე აღიარებს, რომ ერთმანეთთან ბრძოლაში ხშირად ბავშვებსაც იყენებდნენ. როგორც არ უნდა ყოფილიყო, ფაქტია, რომ ამ მოვლენის შემდეგ კურტი რადიკალურად შეიცვალა – მოღუშული, ბოროტი და დამცინავი გახდა. თავისი ოთახის კედლები შემდეგი წარწერით მორთო: “მე მეზიზღება დედა, მეზიზღება მამა, მამას ეზიზღება დედა, დედას ეზიზღება მამა. არის ამაში რაღაც სადარდებელი”. წარწერის ქვევით კი ტვინი მიახატა – უზარმაზარი კითხვის ნიშნით. ეს ნახატი დღემდე შემორჩა, ისევე, როგორც ლედ ზეპპელინ-ის და ირონ მაიდენ-ის ლოგოტიპები. კურტი ამბობს, რომ ამ პერიოდში მისი ცხოვრებიდან თითქოს ნათელი გაქრა, რომელიც შემდგომში ვეღარაფრით დაიბრუნა: “მახსოვს, უეცრად სულ სხვა ადამიანად ვიქეცი. ვგრძნობდი, რომ აღარ შემეძლო სხვა ბავშვებთან ურთიერთობა, რადგან მათ მშობლები ყავდათ, მე კი – არა. ძალიან ვბრაზობდი მშობლებზე, რომ ვერ შეძლეს, თავიანთ პრობლემებს გამკლავებოდნენ. მთელი ბავშვობა მათი გაყრის შემდეგ საკუთარი დედ-მამის მრცხვენოდა…”

ინტერვიუში მან თქვა: მე მრცხვენოდა ჩემი მშობლების გამო და უიმედოდ მსურდა მქონოდა კლასიკური, ტიპიური ოჯახი. დედა, მამა. მე მჭირდებოდა ეს დაცვა. სწორედ ამიტომ ვიყავი ნაწყენი ჩემს მშობლებზე რამდენიმე წლის განმავლობაში.”
მშობლების განქორწინების შემდეგ, ერთი წელი დედასთან ცხოვრობდა. შემდეგ ვაშინგტონში გადავიდნენ და რამოდენიმე წელი ხან ოჯახთან ცხოვრობდა და ხან მეგობრებთან.
ისიც უნდა ითქვას, რომ კურტს არც მანამდე ქონდა მამასთან ძალზედ ახლო ურთიერთობა. პირიქით, ნერვებს უშლიდა მისი სიყვარული სპორტისადმი და სრული სიუცხოვე ხელოვნებასთან. მათ ინტერესებს შორის იმხელა სხვაობა იყო, რომ ხანდახახან კურტს ისიც კი ეჩვენებოდა, თითქოს ნაშვილები იყო.
ხატვის ნიჭი და განვითარებული ინტელექტი კიდევ უფრო ართულებდა პრობლემას. როგორც თვითონ ამბობს, ათ წლამდე არ გრძნობდა თავს სხვა ბავშვებისგან განსხვავებულად, მაგრამ შემდეგ ნელ-ნელა აღმოაჩინა, რომ ხატვით გატაცება და მუსიკისადმი დაუოკებელი ინტერესი მის გაუცხოებას იწვევდა. 12 წლის ასაკში მთლიანად მოიცვა ამ განცდამ და დარწმუნებულმა, რომ ვერასდროს ვერავინ გაუგებდა, მეგობრების ძებნასაც კი თავი ანება.
მშობლების გაყრის სემდეგ გარკველი პერიოდი დედასთან ცხოვრობდა, მაგრამ ვერაფრით ვერ შეეგუა ვენდის ახალ “მეგობარს”, რომელიც მართლაც პარანოიდული შიზოფრენიით იყო დაავადებული. გართულებების თავიდან აცილების მიზნით დედამ მამასთან გაგზავნა საცხოვრებლად. დონალდსაც ახალი ოჯახი ყავდა – ცოლი და ორი გერი, რომელთაც კურტი პირდაპირ ვერ იტანდა.
აქვე მოვყვები ერთ პატარა ისტორიას კურტის ბავშვობიდან: მამამისს პირდაპირ იდეაფიქსი ქონდა, რომ მისი შვილი სპორტსმენი უნდა გამხდარიყო. ამიტომ, სანამ ჯერ კიდევ ქონდა გავლენა ბავშვზე, ბრძოლების სასწავლებლად შეიყვანა. კურტს თავიდან მოწონდა კიდეც ეს, რადგან საბრძოლო ხალიჩაზე საშუალება ეძლეოდა, თავისუფლება მიენიჭებინა მთელი თავისი აგრესიისათვის. მაგრამ ერთხელ,გადამწყვეტი შეჯიბრის დღეს რაღაც ბუნტისმაგვარი ჩაიფიქრა. დონალდი ტრიბუნებზე იჯდა და ამაყად ელოდა შვილის გამოჩენას. “მე ვიდექი, მამას ვუყურებდი და სასტვენის მოლოდინში ვიღიმოდი – იხსენებს კურტი – პირდაპირ მას ვუყურებდი. სასტვენის ხმა რომ გაისმა, უცებ ფარ-ხმალი დავყარე, გულზე ხელი დავიკრიფე და მოწინააღმდეგეს საშუალება მივეცი, უბრძოლველად დავეწვინე და მუხლი დაეჭირა ჩემთვის. როცა ზედიზედ ოთხჯერ მოვიქეცი ასე, მამამ დარბაზი დატოვა…”
ერთხელ დონმა შვილი სანადიროდ წაიყვანა. მაგრამ როგორც კი ტყეში აღმოჩნდნენ, კურტმა მანქანაში დარჩენა ამჯობინა და მთელი დღე იქ გაატარა მონადირეების ლოდინში. როგორც მოგვიანებით იხსენებს, სწორედ მაშინ იგრძნო, რომ “ცხოველების ხოცვა არ შეიძლება, მითუმეტეს გართობის მიზნით” “ეს გაცნობიერებული არ მქონდა და ზუსტად არც ვიცოდი, უბრალოდ ვგრძნობდი, რომ არ მსურდა იქ ყოფნა, სადაც ცხოველებს კლავდნენ”.
ამავე პერიოდში კურტს საშუალება მიეცა, The Beatles-ა და The Monkeeys-გან განსხვავებული მუსიკა მოესმინა. კერძოდ, ისეთი როკ-ჯგუფების ალბომები დაითრია, როგორიცaa Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath & Kiss.
კურტი უფროს კლასებში ფიზიკურ ტკივილებთან გასამკლავებლად ნარკოტიკებს მიეძალა, უმთავრესად მარიხუანას იღებდა. ყველაფერი გასინჯა PHP-ს გარდა. ისტორიები, რომლებიც ამ ნარკოტიკზე ესმოდა, შიშის ზარს სცემდა მას.

მალევე გაიცნობს თანატოლს, იუგოსლავიიდან, რომელიც მასზე დაახლოებით 2ჯერ უფრო მაღალია და ხიდებს ღებავს. ცოტახანში დამეგობრდნენ, კურტმა ჯგუფში დაკვრა შესთავაზა, თუმცა ნოვოსელიჩმა უარი უთხრა. კობეინმა Fecal Matter _ის დემო ჩანაწერებით სცადა კრისის დარწმუნება, როგორც იქნა დაიყოლია. რეპეტიციები სილამაზის სალონის ზედა ოთახში ჰქონდათ : ))

მოკლედ ალბომი კი ჩაწერეს, მაგრამ კურტი როგორც ყოველთვის რაღაცით უკმაყოფილო იყო – ეს ჩენინგის დაკვრის სტილი იყო, ამიტომ 1990 წელს ჯგუფში მის ნაცვლად ბატონი გროული მოვიდა.
აი დეივის მოსვლას რახან შევეხე, ერთ ამბავს დავწერ, რომელიც თავად ბატონმა გროულმა გაიხსენა ინტერვიუში – ,,როდესაც მე და კრისი სახლში შევედით, პირველი რაც დავინახე არეული, ძალიან არეული ოთახი იყო და მესმოდა ტირილის ხმა (ჩუმი ოღონდ : )) . თავიდან გამიკვირდა, დავიბენი, არ ვიცოდი რა მექნა. ოთახში როდესაც შევედით , კურტს მივესალმე, მან არაფერი მიპასუხა. თავი მუხლებზე ედო და კვლავ ჩუმად ტიროდა. პირველი 5 დღე ის არც ჭამდა, არც არსად გადიოდა. უბრალოდ თავისთვის იჯდა კუთხეში და გამუდმებით ტიროდა ან მღეროდა about a girl -ს(რომელიც თავის მეგობარ გოგონას მიუძღვნა). ძალიან გაკვირვებული დავრჩი. შემდეგ კრის ვკითხე კურტის შესახებ, მან მითხრა რომ ის ასე თავის GF-სთან დაშორებას ( თუ როგორ ვთქვა რავი :/) განიცდიდა. მე-6 თუ მე-7 დღეს ავტობუსით ერთად მგზავრობა მოგვიწია, მე ვერაფერს ვეუბნებოდი კურტს, მაგრამ რამდენიმე წუთის შემდეგ მან შემომხედა ( ამ დროის განმავლობაში მგონი პირველად), გამიღიმა და მითხრა – გამარჯობა, მე კურტი ვარ და სულ ასეთი კი არ ვარ : ). ეს ყველაფერი არასოდეს დამავიწყდება”

1991წ. “ნირვანამ” გამოუშვა ახალი ალბომი “Nevermind”, რომელმაც არნახული პოპულარობა შესძინა ჯგუფის წევრებს, ამ ალბომზე არაფერს დავწერ, ისედაც ყველამ ყველაფერი იცის.
მიუხედავად პოპულარობისა კურტი ცდილობდა “ნირვანას” ასეთი წარმატება შეეჩერებინა, რადგან მედიამ საშინლად მოაბეზრა მას თავი. ჟურნალისტები, პაპარაცები,… საკუთარ თავს ფრანგ ფერმერს ადარებდა.
1992 წლის 24 თებერვალს კურტ კობეინი და კორტნი ლავი დაქორწინდნენ ჰავაიში. ეს ალბათ უბედნიერესი პერიოდი იყო კობეინის ცხოვრებაში

+ 1 წელიწადში ფრენსისიც მოევლინა ქვეყანას, მანამდე კი ის ცდილობდა მკურნალობას, მაგრამ უმეტესად ტკივილს ვერ უძლებდა. ერთხელ როდესაც ტკივილის ატანა არ შეეძლო, ბოლო ხმაზე იღრიალა საავადმოყოფოში – ,, მე ამის ატანა აღარ შემიძლია, მაგრამ მე შვილი მეყოლება და ამით ბედნიერი ვიქნები!”
1992 წელს Incesticide გამოდის, არც ალბომზე დავწერ არაფერს : D მარტო იმას ვიტყვი რომ ჩემი უსაყვარლესი ალბომია IN UTERO-სთან ერთად რომელიც 1993 წელს გამოვიდა.

რეაბილიტაციის შემდეგ ნირვანა ავსტრალიურ ტურნეში მიემგზავრება. კობეინი სასტიკად ძალა გამოცლილია, როგორც თავად ამბობდა – ის მუსიკას ვეღარ გრძნობდა.

თავისი სიცოცხლის უმეტესი ნაწილი კურტმა დეპრესიებთან, ქრონიკულ ბრონხიტთან და ინტენსიურ ფიზიკურ ტკივილთან ბრძოლაში გაატარა.

კობეინმა უთხრა მაიკლ ეზერადს, რომელიც მის ბიოგრაფიას წერდა: “არავის უთქვამს ჩემთვის რომ უნდა შევჩერებულიყავი. მეც არ ვზრუნავდი საკუთარ თავზე. მათ ეს საქმე ხელობად ჰქონდათ უკვე გადაქცეული, მაგრამ ამავე დროს, არაფერი იცოდნენ მასზე. ყოველ წამს თითო ნაბიჯს ვდგავდი სიკვდილისკენ.”

1993 წელს ჩატარებული აკუსტიკური კონცერტი.. ნირვანას სიმღერები ჟღერს ისე, როგორც კლასიკური პოპ მელოდიები.. ჩამქრალი სანთლები… გულიდან ამონთხეული ბოლო ბგერები და სიმღერა, რომელიც კურტს არ უმღერია, მან იტირა.

1994 წელი – 4 მარტს კორტნიმ კობეინი ზედმეტი დოზისგან გონებადაკარგული იპოვა. კურტი სასწრაფოდ გადაიყვანეს საავადმყოფოში. რამდენიმე დღე უგონოდ იყო. საავადმყოფოში 5 დღე გაატარა, შემდეგ კი სიეტლში დაბრუნდა. კორტნი ლავმა თქვა, რომ ეს იყო მისი პირველი თვითმკვლელობის მცდელობა.

18 მარტს კორტნიმ პოლიციას დაურეკა და უთხრა, რომ კურტი ოთახში ჩაიკეტა იარაღით და თავის მოკვლას აპირებდა. როცა პოლიცია მოვიდა, მათ კობეინი მთვრალი იპოვეს ოთახში.

30 მარტს კობეინი შევიდა გამოსასწორებელ ცენტრში (ლოს-ანჯელესი, კალიფორნია).

1 აპრილს ფრენსისის ერთ-ერთმა ძიძამ მიიყვანა გოგონა და უფლება მისცა კურტს, შვილთან ერთად გაეტარებინა ერთი საათი.
იმ ღამეს კურტი გადაცოცდა 6 ფუტი სიმაღლის გალავანზე და გამოიქცა. ის ტაქსით მივიდა აეროპორტამდე და გადაფრინდა სიეტლში.

რამდენიმე დღის განმავლობაში კურტი დაეხეტებოდა სიეტლის გარშემო ჭუჭყიანი, დალაქავებული ტანსაცმლით.
მისმა მეგობრებმა და ოჯახის წევრებმა არაფერი იცოდნენ მასზე.

აი შემდეგ კი – გარაჟის ოთახი.. სასიკვდილო დოზაზე სამჯერ მეტი ჰეროინი სისხლში… რამოდენიმე საყვარელი ნივთი… ბავშვობის საყვარელი დათუნია, საუკეთესო სიმღერების ჩანაწერები და ნირვანას ალბომი – In UterO.

1994 წლის 5 აპრილს კურტ კობეინმა თავი მოიკლა.

აქვე იმას დავწერ, რაც ბასა ჯანიკაშვილის ერთ-ერთ სტატიაში იყო დაბეჭდილი და რასაც ძალიან ხშირად ვიმეორებ – Kurt Cobain-ი დღემდე იმ მუსიკისთა სიაში რჩება , ვინც არ თამაშობდა და მისი ცხოვრების სტილიც და მისი სიმღერებიც იდენტური იყო. ის არ ჰგავდა ოზის ოზბორნს რომელიც სცენაზე სატანას განასახიერებდა და რეალურ ცხოვრებაში , მეუღლესთან და შვილებთან ერთად საკვირაო მესას ესწრებოდა. არც Eric Clapton-ს ჰავდა რომელიც ღარიბ ბიჭზე მღეროდა და თვითონ კი არმანის პიჯაკი ეცვა. ის უბრალოდ KURT COBAIN-ი იყო აგრესიული არაინტელექტუალი , რომელმაც თავისი გულახდილობით 90-იანების მუსიკა სხვა საფეხურზე აიყვანა.

The reason Courtney Love, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic is not happy about the use of Kurt Cobain for “Guitar Hero 5″, is not that they put him in the game without their permission. Courtney agreed to put Kurt in the game in the first place, she gave them permission. She gave them permission for Kurt to sing Nirvana songs for the game. She didn’t give them permission to use Kurt to sing songs by other artists.

This is why Courtney, Dave, and Krist are pissed off and on a warpath against Activision about it.

I totally agree with it. It’s totally embarrasing and sickening to have Kurt singing songs by other artists like Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, etc. I’m like, “What the hell is Activision thinking? The company are a bunch of fucking morons”. This is humiliating for Nirvana fans.

I am so glad not getting the game. I too am upset and dissapointed with Activision, and because of this, I will no longer by anymore future released Guitar Hero games.

I will still keep Guitar Hero III, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: Metallica, of course, but I will no longer support Activision. They might ruin the upcoming Van Halen game as well.

This is so wrong having Kurt Cobain, singing songs by other artists, that is not Nirvana. So now you see why they are upset. I can’t blame ‘em.

Lançado na semana passada para vários consoles, entre eles o PlayStation 2, Guitar Hero 5 vem gerando polêmica por causa da utilização da imagem do lendário músico Kurt Cobain no game. O líder do Nirvana aparece no jogo cantando dois de seus maiores sucessos, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” e uma versão ao vivo de “Lithium”, mas para desespero dos fãs (onde eu me incluo nessa), a Activision, empresa responsável pela franquia Guitar Hero, teve o desrespeito de colocar o “pai do grunge” cantando também músicas que não tem nada a ver com o artista, como a música “Someone gives Love a bad name” do Bon Jovi!!! Confira no vídeo abaixo que situação ridícula foi colocado o pobre Kurt Cobain, que deve estar se revirando no túmulo:

Em uma entrevista ao site da Rolling Stone EUA, Tim Riley, vice-presidente da Activision, afirmou que para conseguir as faixas do Nirvana no game, ele teve três frentes de negociação: Courtney Love, viúva de Cobain e detentora do espólio do músico, Dave Grohl, ex-baterista do Nirvana, e Universal Publishing, que administra o catálogo da banda.

Ainda segundo Tim Riley, Courtney participou da criação do avatar do ex-marido. “Ela nos forneceu algumas fotos e vídeos e sabia exatamente como queria o desenho de Kurt”, disse Riley. “Ela escolheu as roupas e o corte de cabelo, que no final das contas saiu ao estilo de ‘Teen Spirit’, e depois fizemos algumas mudanças.” A cantora chegou a fazer referência ao visual jovem e saudável do deus grego Adônis. E apesar da fama de difícil da líder do Hole, Riley afirmou que “foi ótimo trabalhar com ela”.

É, mas de forma “curiosa”, Courtney Love não está nada satisfeita com o que fizeram com a imagem de seu falecido marido, pois ela escreveu recentemente em seu Twitter a seguinte mensagem: “Esta merda de Guitar Hero é violação de contrato. Haverá resposta adequada para isso, e retratação” e completou “Nós vamos processar a merda da Activision”, empresa responsável pelo Guitar Hero. Courtney, que já não é adorada pelos fãs mais xiitas do Nirvana, recebeu duras criticas por permitir o uso da imagem de Kurt, que era completamente avesso a esse tipo de exposição, no game Guitar Hero.

E os remanescentes do Nirvana também não aprovaram a forma como a imagem de Kurt foi retratada no game. Dave Grohl e Krist Novoselic divulgaram um comunicado no dia 10/09 dizendo que estão “Consternados e desapontados com a maneira que o avatar de Kurt Cobain é usado no Guitar Hero 5”. Os dois ainda reiteraram que eles não têm nenhum controle da imagem e do nome de Kurt, e sim os seus herdeiros.

The surviving members of Nirvana are “dismayed and very disappointed” by the use of Kurt Cobain in a new video game.

An avatar of the deceased rocker features heavily in the latest edition of “Guitar Hero”, angering Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl.

Not only can his character be used to perform songs by his own band but also a whole host of others.

Their reaction has been mirrored by that of Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, who has threatened to sure the game’s makers, Activision.

“While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character”, said Novoselic and Grohl.

“This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in ‘re-locking’ Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future”, they commented in a statement.

Love, meanwhile, insists she never agreed to the use of her former husband’s likeness in this way.

“This is NECROPHILIC this is VILE please address all calls to my lawyer Keith Fink Esquire who is FURIOUS”, she wrote on Twitter.

However, Activision have denied any wrongdoing, insisting all the right legal papers have been signed.

“‘Guitar Hero’ secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in ‘Guitar Hero 5′“, they stated.

“Guitar Hero 5″ was released today.

Courtney Love has threatened legal action against the video-game manufacturer Activision for using the image of her late husband Kurt Cobain in their Guitar Hero game. The game features an image of Cobain lip-synching to songs. Love angrily wrote on Twitter:

“[I] never signed off on the avatar, let alone this fucking feature!…There’s been four breaches of a very strict contract.”

Activision vice president Tim Riley counters Love’s claims, stating:

“Courtney supplied us with photos and videos. She picked the wardrobe and hairstyle, which turned out to be the ‘Teen Spirit’ look.”

Cobain’s bandmates in Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, released a statement saying that they are “dismayed and very disappointed” at how Cobain’s image is used in the game.

As many probably knew, Jay-Z is going all out to promote his latest effort, The Blueprint 3, which dropped Tuesday. Stereogum reported on Wild Beasts‘ live NYC debut, held two nights ago downtown at Joe’s Pub. Considering the quality of Wild Beasts’ two albums, particularly the recent Two Dancers, one would expect them to play in a dedicated rock venue. Not the case with this sit-down establishment, but that’s all right when you take into account that many popular indie acts — including Brand New, Sufjan Stevens, and The Rural Alberta Advantage — prefer smaller venues. NME.com reports that British alternative rock band White Lies released a rare track for download today. The song “Taxidermy” is a live favorite and was only available before on the band’s 7″ single “To Lose My Life.” White Lies will be touring the U.S. soon along with shows supporting Kings of Leon from September 25 through October 16. Close dates include New York City and Toronto on September 25 and September 26 respectively. White Lies also have their track “Death” on the Jennifer’s Body soundtrack. In preparation for their latest album Air have released a music video for the song “Sing Sang Sung,” and it’s featured on Pitchfork today.  ”Sing Sang Sung” is the first single off the French electropopper’s forthcoming album Love 2. Pitchfork also reports that Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan has launched a website today called Everything From Here to There. Apparently no one is happy with the way Kurt Cobain has been immortalized in Guitar Hero 5.  Courtney Love already tossed a fit on her Twiter, and now Cobain’s bandmates, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have expressed their disappointment. Syracuse.com’s Listen Up Blog reported today that legendary folk guitarist Richie Havens would be playing at Onondaga Community College on October 21. Though the concert is free, OCC recommends calling 315-498-2828 to reserve a seat. Havens opened Woodstock forty years ago with a few Beatles covers and the traditional Negro spiritual Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. Even at 68, Havens still tours — playing NYC’s free River to River festival this summer — and has released the new album Nobody Left to Crown. Well, it looks like Courtney Love is not the only one in the music industry upset at Activision with the use of Kurt Cobain for “Guitar Hero 5″. It looks like Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, the surviving band members of Nirvana, are pretty pissed too.

They aren’t really upset at Kurt Cobain being used for the game, however, they are just pissed that he could be played by other artists by unlocking a secret of the game.

By now you’ve seen the clip of a digitized Kurt Cobain rocking his way through Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” on Guitar Hero 5. It’s an image so bizarre, it not only freaked out Rolling Stone, but sent Courtney Love into a Twitter rampage. In a statement issued this afternoon, Grohl and Novoselic say they are “dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game,” adding, “The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate — we have no control whatsoever in that area.” The pair ask Activision to “re-lock” the Cobain character and state, “It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.”
