Tips to Get Through Your Thanksgiving Meal as Healthily as Possible

Thanksgiving is a time for gathering together with friends, family and loved ones. While this holiday is a great time to feel love and connection with others, over time it has also become a holiday associated with eating copious amounts of food and stuffing ourselves so much that we can barely move afterwards. It doesn’t have to be part of our tradition to feel that way!!

There may be very special dishes at Thanksgiving that are part of your family’s tradition that we won’t want to miss out on. Therefore, these tips are not about making us feel deprived on Thanksgiving, they are rather about how to enjoy one of our favorite meals, while not feeling sick or that we weigh 400 pounds afterwards (Can I get a “NO THANKS?!!”).

You will actually enjoy your meal and holiday even more!

Thanksgiving Tips

1.    The day before Thanksgiving, try to eat really light. That way, by the day of the big meal,your body will not be already backed up digesting heavy foods from the day before.

2.    Before the big meal, which is usually in the afternoon, have only fruit on an empty stomach, or nothing, and drink plenty of water, so you are hydrated.

3.    Drink as little water, alcohol, or other liquids during the actual meal itself. Liquids dilute the Hydrochloric acid in our stomach, and make it harder for us to digest our foods. Food that is not digested well can contribute to toxicity in the body.

4.    Have the first actual thing you start eating be a raw green salad or any kind of raw vegetables. It is highly beneficial to coat the stomach with something alkaline first, and as this will help push through the other concentrated, acidic foods that you will eat afterwards for better digestion. It will also ensure that you are getting fiber in the body first, so you will be less apt to pig out on other foods.

5.    Eat slowly and enjoy your food! Remember to make the meal be about who you are eating with, and the love around the table. That is the main point of the gathering, not just eating as much as possible! So enjoy all your foods, but just be conscious that you do NOT need to overstuff yourself. Have a goal of trying a little big of everything, but leave the table only 80% full.

6.    Chew really well. You’ve heard it before, but for this meal it is especially important! The digestion of carbs begins in the mouth with the secretion of the enzyme ptyalin, and we want to help along digestion in any way we can.

7.    Later on that night, if you get hungry again, raw vegetables, salad and some water would be your best bet over even fruit. The combination of heavy foods in your stomach could take over 12 hours to digest in your stomach. If we eat fruit on top of that, fruit could end up backing us up even more past that, since fruit leaves the stomach in 20 minutes. If it can’t leave the stomach, it will be stuck there, and will start to ferment and acidify. Not great for our digestion, energy, and beauty!

Carrie Underwood in Theia – I really love this look. Sometimes I get tired of the whole Grecian look,  but then again I love the one-shouldered dress. AND THOSE SHOES! – 4.5

Alicia Keys in Giorgio Armani – The dress is fantastic. And the shoes are okay. The jewelry is a bit much and the hair can go… This look had potential to be a 5, but because of everything else I’m just going to give it a 3.

Leona Lewis in Vivienne Westwood – 2 Vivienne Westwood is great, sure. I’d love to see Leona try some other designers now too. NO to those boots.

Shakira in Versace. 5! I really love this dress. I don’t really like the shoes… but my love for the dress overrules. Shakira looks really great in this dress. It was perfect for her.

Demi Lovato in Jenny Packham – 3.5. I like that Demi went very natural for this look everything from her shoes, to her dress color, to her makeup. It washes her out a little bit, but it’s nice to see her clean up and not look so out there. The dress is okay. The neckline is too much for me.

Selena Gomez in Talbot Runhof. 4. This is a very age-appropriate dress for her. She looks cute!

Kelly Clarkson. 1.5. oh noooo Kelly this dress is so unflattering and is a bejeweled disaster ahh

Sempre que tem red carpet pra comentar (a gente adora!), fico me cobrando pra tentar não detonar muito o povo. Mas, gente, vamos e convenhamos, isso tá se tornando cada vez mais impossível! No American Music Awards, o mau gosto a falta de personal stylist com noção foi pública e notória, essa gente tá me deixando com vergonha alheia…

Que brilho é tendência, todo mundo sabe. Mas daí a sair todo mundo de casa com vestido cintilante? A Carrie foi a que menos me decepcionou, a sandália salvou o look. A Kate parecia estar numa vibe bem esquisita com umas caras e bocas pra lá de estranhas e apostou num vestido size 8 que simplesmente não rolou. Kristen, sempre tão discretinha, me decepcionou com esse vestido estranho com uma faixa de pele aparecendo. Selena tão sem graça que nem quero comentar…

E como tudo que tá ruim pode piorar, eis que aparece Leona Lewis que pediu a fantasia de Mulher Gato, mas veio a de Mulher Morcego, ridícula! Rihanna com seu topete emprestado pelo mico-leão-dourado e um Marchesa que é a melhor coisa que ela usou nos últimos tempos, ainda que não me agrade muito. E a Shakira (estoy aquí) com um Valentino super periguete amarelo ovo que ela conseguiu estragar ainda mais com aquela sandália by Bruna Surfistinha.

O musical Burlesque, que terá Christina Aguillera como protagonista, interpretando uma menina do interior, contará com a presença de Eric Dane, o Sloan de Grey’s Anatomy e Kristen Bell, a eterna Veronica Mars.

Toda segunda vou escolher um Red Carpet que rolou no fim de semana anterior para mostrar os looks das celebrities. E o evento dessa semana foi o American Music Awards, que rolou domingo dia 22/11/2009.

Separei os looks por cores, e olha só o que rolou por lá.

O nude continua em alta, seja no longo rendado de Nicole Kidman ou no cinto de Kristen Bell. Meus favoritos com certeza!

O pretinho básico aparece não tão básico assim em longos e curtos, bordados ou lisos.

O preto apareceu também acompanhado de muito brilho.

Os tons marrons apareceram misturados entre si, ou com o preto de J.Lo.

Cores vibrantes ganharam destaque em duas versões.

E é claro que o figurino de Lady Gaga e Rihanna no palco precisavam chamar atenção.

De belangrijke AMA´s zijn weer geweest! Veel sterren op de rode loper, een zeer heftige show

en natuurlijk nog de afterparty. Ik mis Beyoncé op de rode loper. Waarschijnlijk had ze het te druk met haar

tour. Maar desondanks waren er grote sterren zoals Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna etc. Ik vind

het jurkje van Alicia op de rode loper erg leuk, alleen vind ik het geheel iets te blauw door de bijpassende

heels en oogschaduw. Carrie Underwood ziet er erg leuk uit op de rode loper. Ook op het podium heeft

ze een leuk jumpsuitje aan. Ik vind overigens de laatste tijd dat ze elkaar wel heel erg proberen te overtreffen

qua kleding. Kijk alleen nu maar eens naar Lady Gaga in haar huidskleurige creatie en naar Rihanna!

Erg leuk om een keer te zien, maar het is niet realistisch. Het moet gaan om de performance zelf (de stem) in

plaats van om de aankleding.  Beyoncé gaat ook altijd de strijd aan. Maar ik ben wel erg benieuwd naar

de optredens. Ik heb de AMA’s nog niet gezien. Jullie wel? Ik vind Fergie er leuk uitzien, terwijl ik geen

fan van haar ben. Haar haar zit erg mooi.

Bom, como todo mundo que estava acompanhando no twitter, na tv e em qualquer meio de comunicação, rolou ontem o AMA – American Music Awards, e tava cheeeeeeeeeio de celebs bem-vestidas (ou não). Então eu robei umas fotos de uns sites e vou falar das roupitchas, cabelos e makes.

Kate Hudson quase perdeu o vestido que eu não sei de que marca é (se alguém souber me fala!). Gostei que ela optou por uma make mais natural, sem colar (afinal, o vestido já fala por si) e, mesmo com os sapatos sendo brilhantes não ficou aquela coisa “corvos venham me pegar porque eu to brilhando demais!”. Só não entendi qual a ideia desse cabelo com essas mechas soltas…

Make mais simples!

Carrie Underwood, devo confessar que eu não faço a minima ideia de quem você seja, mas tá aprovada. Mesmo estando meio “formatura na grécia” eu achei uma graça (talvez eu apanhe por isso, mas não to nem ai!). A make ficou linda, e eu uso esse cabelo atualmente (junto com os coques por causa do calor), então prefiro não comentar(Troca de cinto e tá tudo fofissimo!). Saca só a make que fofa:

Leona Lewis foi de Vivienne Westwood. Que sapato é esse gata? Tem roupa que pede cabelo preso e mais nada, esse vestido é uma dessas roupas! Ela é tipo um Balmain sabe? Só tem que usar um coque e pronto, tá feito o look e fica lindo!

Sempre achei que loira e amarelo são duas coisas que não combinam e cada vez mais comprovo minha teoria. Graças a Deus Shakira não é laranja, se ela fosse laranja aí sim seria um desastre total!

Leona devia ter pego o cabelo de Shakira e usado nela!

Essa eu prefiro não comentar, eu desisti da Rihanna. E, principalmente, do cabelo dela!

Nicole Kidman foi de Balenciaga, nessas horas eu me pergunto o que se passa na cabeça de alguns designers, Nicolas Ghesquiere, eu te amo, mas o que tá acontecendo com você meu amor???

Keith, eu acho você lindo de morrer, e sempre tive a teoria que Nicole sempre escolheu bem os boffes, mas fecha mais um botão da camisa! Já sabemos que você é tatuado.

Adoro as caras que ela faz, adoro os cabelos que ela usa, adoro as makes! LINDA, ABSURDA, MARAVILHOSA!

While I missed the red carpet coverage, I did tune into the show, which for the most part flopped this year. My highlights we’re definitely Jay-Z & Alicia Keys‘ performance of “Empire State Of Mind”, Whitney Houston’s performance of “I Didn’t Know My Strength”, Black Eyed Peas‘ performance, Rihanna’s performance, and Janet Jackson’s medley. Adam Lambert had my mouth open throughout his whole performance (whoa!) But for the most part, I was disappointed. WTF was J. Lo doing anyway? Boo! Anywho, just when I thought the red carpet would cheer me up, that slightly disappointed too:

Fergie Fer sparkled in a strapless Girogio Armani dress, giving us a little leg action. Love this edgy, but still simplistic look on her. HIT

Shakira rocked this Versace mini-dress, but kept the accessories to a minimum. I would loved to see her up the jewelry factor. Still a cute look for her though. HIT

Rihanna rocked a carefully constructed Marchesa dress. Not liking this look… at all! I usually love Rih Rih’s red carpet looks, or any looks, but this was a MISS for me. Womp.

Alicia Keys looked gorgeous(!!!) in this multi-colored, beaded detail strapless Giorgio Armani dress. She chose to match her shoes with her dress (tricky!) with these Christian Louboutin sandals. HIT

My fellow Aries, Leona Lewis, bored me- per usual. She rocked this black Vivienne Westwood dress with double hemline and pointy bustline. Not liking this. It probably could have worked on someone else. MISS

Country cute Carrie Underwood looked plain old fab in this Theia dress. I really like this look on her. HIT

Melody Thornton came out in a long-sleeved Sass & Bide embellished mini and black Alexander McQueen booties. This looks like something you would wear to dinner with your friends. I like it, just not for the AMA’s. MISS

Kristen Bell looked young & classy in Christian Cota. Not my fave look of the night, but it’s a good look for Kristen. HIT

I originally intended for this post to be a detailed review of the movie When in Rome, starring Kristen Bell, but I’m starting to steer away from it just because I don’t want to do two things. 1) I don’t want to spoil the movie, though the trailer pretty much does enough, and 2) I don’t want to give you my opinion on it because you may get the wrong impression. Pretty much, if you want to see it, go see it.

Okay! Fine fine I need to say one more thing. I disliked Disney’s (yes, this is a Disney movie) use of CGI in the movie. You’ll see what I mean. I feel like it was overused even though it wasn’t used that much in the movie.

Anyways, movie comes out some time in January 2010 so you’ve got a few months to decide whether or not you want to see it.

So after the movie, I hit up the Kogi truck. For those of you who have had Kogi before, you know how good it is, but I’m not talking about the regular menu items. For probably a few weeks, they’re going to have this special; the Persimmon Mandarin Sausage taco. Boy is this amazing. Even though I only had a bite of it, I simply could not describe the flavors that had combined to make a super flavor in my mouth. Anyways, amazing taco. Blast of flavor. Go try it (www.kogibbq.com) and I promise you won’t regret it!
