People are almost already gone, or are about to leave (myself I am leaving the office in an hour or so). The office is getting empty, the discussion are fading away. But today, started by a presentation from Jos of strigi fame on a metadata project for KWord and KOffice, and a proof of concept implementations of ODF 1.2 metadata, and how to use nepomuk. This trigger a discussion between him and Pierre on a design that could work for change tracking and metadata in the KOffice text library.

The last main topic was about making KOffice ready for end-users. And we decided to define a few use cases with an associated users for each application. And then list the features they need, and what kind of issues they face. While Krita is getting focused on being useful for the artist behind Blender movies. Of course, the biggest challenge is now to find developers resources to implement all this ideas and fixes.

This was the last topic on the general session. Afterward hacking started again, as well as specific discussion between a small group of developers. For instance, the Krita team (or what was left of it after the departure of Dmitry) started a discussion on redesigning our painting operation settings, which are currently a bit messy between GUI elements, and settings used for painting.

And now people are either gone, compiling KOffice on windows or almost asleep.

The removal of GIMP from the default installation of Ubuntu has raised quiet a stir. And as drawn quiet a bit of advertisement for Krita, as some people suggested the use of Krita instead, but for no good reasons, since Krita is not a good replacement for GIMP as a default installation.

You have to consider the use case of the default installation, since the Ubuntu people are trying to make is a distribution that is usefull for the average users, the default installation need to cover the need of the many. And what most people want to do with their picture is to classify them, do light weight retouching (for instance, adjust the brightness, remove red eyes) and then print the image or send it on the Internet. Surely, both Krita and GIMP can do it, but they have way more features than what is needed for most users. As Sven Neumann, one of the core GIMP developer, said GIMP is a high-end application for professionals, and so is Krita. Some might think that Krita has a GUI that is more friendly to the beginner, but that is not the problem, it is still packed with features that are of no interest to most users. And there are tools that are better suited to accomplish the task of those users, this is why a pictures collection management tool, such as F-Spot or Digikam is a much better choice, it covers the main usage of the majority of users. Even if Digikam is designed for professional photographer, I still think it scale nicely to average users. And when the user want to do more with images, he can just go to his favorite package manager, and install GIMP or Krita.

T ex är det ett brott att köpa sådana här uppehållstillstånd svart, och många utav dem som kommer hit med hjälp utav dessa är ju kriminella redan innan.

För ingen ska tro att alla de flyktingar och invandrare som kommer hit flyr ifrån någonting utan orsak, många gånger flyr de ifrån sina hemländer på grund utav att de har begått brott där.

Och vad är då bättre än att fly till ett land som tar emot vem som helst med öppna armar utan att kolla upp saker och ting ordentligt när det gäller personen ifråga?

Nej, i Sverige släpper vi alla, oavsett vilka brott som de har begått.

Yesterday, we released KOffice 2.1, the first major release in the 2.x cycle. It brings many improvements over 2.0, providing a much more stable and rich full experience, you can read more details in the 2.1 release announcement.

While 2.0 was clearly a developer release for developer, and for testing. For 2.1, we concentrated on fixing bugs, fixing some of the annoying issues, 2.1 is coming with many improvements in the MS Office filters, but 2.1 is still lacking in many area, for instance 2.1 comes with experimental support for displaying tables and formulas, but there is no support for editing them. Also there are still many rough edge in the UI. But the progress from 2.0 are astonishing, helped by the good base libraries (Qt, KDE and koffice), external help (Kevin Otten’s student and now Nokia).

While, in general, KOffice 2.1 is still not recommended for end-users. There are two exceptions, the first one is Karbon, while far to be feature full, is starting to become a very capable vector drawing editor, in 2.1 it get support for filters (only blur in 2.1, more is coming for 2.2). I personally use it a lot these days to create illustration for my thesis work. And Krita has made big progress in stability, with dozens of crash fixes for 2.1, and also include many of the new fun painting operation from Lukas, improvement in brush dynamic, recording of filters to create macro…

Last week, I blogged about the removal of the graphics magick file format filter in Krita, and that it would mean that we need to write directly our own support for many file formats, using low-levels library when relevant and available. And by forcing us to do this work, the support for file formats in 2.2 will rock.

Among the three mostly usefull file formats that were delivered by the gmagick file format filter, there is XCF, the file format of the Gimp. After my blog, pusling (Sune Vuorela of the debian KDE team) reminded me about xcftools, a tool written by Henning Makholm that extract information from XCF files. Despite not being a library, the code to parse XCF files is well seperated from the command line logic, and I imported it in Krita (might be a good idea to turn it into a real library ?).

As mentioned, the previous filter was not really good, we were only able to get the layers, but no masks or no composite information, or opacity, as reported in this bug 106730. And with the xcftools based filter, we can read all that information, making XCF a first class citizen in Krita. There might be some issues with composite ops that behaves differently on some cases between application, but that something that we would need to fix as well.

For the other way around, to import from Krita into the Gimp, the OpenRaster Archiving format would be the way to go.

About other file formats, Boudewijn is already working on PSD support. The last important one is GIF support, which will probably be done using libgif.

Since its birth, Krita has been depending on ImageMagick (or the GraphicsMagick fork). The original idea was to build Krita as a GUI on top of ImageMagick. When the current team (or at least its veterans) started to work on Krita, ImageMagick was only used for exporting and importing files.

But using an abstraction of file formats did not give us enough control on how the files are loaded and saved, so four years ago, we decided to have our own implementation of the most used file formats: png, jpeg and tiff. Then later, tired of having to adjust our code for each releases of ImageMagick, we turned to GraphicsMagick, a fork that claim to have API stability. But the long term plan has always being to remove the dependency, and to have our own implementation of the file formats (or to use libraries when relevant).

Things have been accelerated recently, when we discovered that recent version of GraphicsMagick crashes Krita in a very weird way, so we decide to remove the GraphicsMagick files filter, and to finish implementing the format ourselves. This has started with the PPM filter that was finished yesterday, and now I am taking care of the JPEG 2000 format using the OpenJpeg library. But this might mean that in the near future, some important file format such as Photoshop’s PSD or Gimp’s XCF will not be available (but there is a Gimp plug-in to export to ORA which can then be imported in Krita).

Focul Viu

Zalmoxe este cel care i-a invatat pe stramosii nostri taina tetraktisului. Dar care este oare taina tetraktisului? De ce a fost nevoie ca aceasta taina sa fie revelata de catre Zalmoxe?
Tetraktis este o figura care arata asa cum se vede in figura alaturata. Este un ansamblu de puncte, care formeaza un triunghi echilateral si care a avut un inteles aparte pentru antici. Intelesul acestei figuri era pastrat secret.

Primul lucru care se poate observa este ca exista 4 nivele. Primul nivel are un punct, al doilea are 2 puncte, al treilea are 3 puncte, al patrulea are 4. Numarul de puncte ale acestei figuri este numarul 10 si el era considerat foarte important. Acest numar se gaseste in piatra la Gradistea de Munte (Soarel de Andezit, Sanctuarul Mare de Andezit).

Unind varfurile acestei figuri se obtine un triunghi echilateral. Prin trasarea acestor trei linii se ajunge ca un singur punct sa fie izolat de restul punctelor. Pe fiecare latura exista 4 puncte. Mergand inapoi la prima imagine si luind linie cu linie avem o linie cu 4 puncte, una cu 3, una cu 2 si una cu un punct. Toate aceste numere m-au dus cu gandul la un simbol pastrat pana in zilele noastre (datorita stiintelor ezoterice hinduse, inrudite cu cele din Carpati).

Acest simbol este simbolul Muladhara Chakra. Este simbolul unui centru energetic aflat la baza coloanei vertebrale. El este 1 centru energetic (poate ca este cel mai important centru pentru trairea umana), 2 figuri geometrice (triunghi si patrat), 3 laturi ale triunghiului si 4 laturi ale patratului. Patratul este simbolul acestui centru energetic. Triunghiul simbolizeaza o forta care se afle in stare de “adormire” la acest nivel (kundalini). La trezirea si ghidarea acestei forte de-a lungul Shushumnei (coridor energetic) se activeaza alti centri energetici. Se spune ca cei care au acest centru activat stapanesc “poarta vietii si a mortii”. Si documentele antice vorbesc despre Zalmoxes ca fiind cel care ii invata pe Daci cum sa devina nemuritori. Probabil ca el i-a invatat cum sa trezeasca acest centru energetic si cum sa stapaneasca aceste energii.

Alaturat este o imagine a lui Pitagora. Imaginea ofera o surpriza. Deasupra capului se afla Tetraktisul iar in mana el tine un Tetraedru. Tetraedrul este un corp geometric cu 4 fete triunghiuri echilaterale!!! Tetraedrul este unul dintre corpurile platonice si este simbol al elementului foc. Kundalini (triunghiul din patratul simbolului muladharei) este considerat drept “focul” muladharei. Kundalini ridicat pe shushumna pana la nivelul crestetului capului (unde in figura se afla tetraktisul) deschide centrul Sahasrara si face legatura cu Dumnezeu. In credinta antica Tetraktisul facilita legatura cu Dumnezeu, tetraedrul reprezinta focul sacru.

Prin unirea varfurilor triunghiului echilateral cu punctul din mijlocul figurii se obtine aceasta figura care este de fapt vederea de sus a unui tetraedru. Referitor la tetraedru si elementul foc, Cristina Panculescu face o dezvaluire importanta, cred eu. Muntii Carpati formeaza un triunghi echilateral si cu un punct din spatiu el formeaza un tetraedru. Localizarea bazei acesti tetraedru este zona Ardeal, cu centrul triunghiului de baza in zona Targu Mures. Tetraedru-Foc, Ardeal-Arde+al?! Sa fie oare Ardealul o zona a focului viu?

Zalmoxe
Un alt aspect interesant cred ca este numele celui care i-a educat pe Daci. Zalmoxe. Acest nume poate sa fie privit si astfel Zalmoxe=za-al-moxe. Moxe (moxa) reprezinta foc, za este un sunet care se poate auzi la arderea lemnului. Lemnul in procesul de ardere produce un sunet care poate sa fie aproximat cu “za”. Daca aceasta este adevarat atunci numele celui care i-a initiat pe Daci este si solutia. Zalmoxe este focul viu care elibereaza. Moxa mai poate sa fie considerata si mocsha=eliberare. Banuiesc ca ZA este bij mantra pentru intrarea in legatura cu ceea ce Zalmoxe este, cu ceea ce el reprezinta. S-ar putea ca ZA sa se pronunte de fapt TZA (inca nu sunt sigur). Cu acestea zise, cuvinte ca: zare, Zarand, zapaceala, zapacit, zalud, zarva, tzara, tzaran, tzarina, …. capata intelesuri mult mai profunde.
Din anii copilariei imi aduc aminte despre un ritual care avea loc iarna. Mersul cu Capra. Cei care luau parte la acest ritual (antic) repetau cu obstinatie TZA. Nu imi aduc aminte cu exactitate dar era ceva de genul: tza, tza, tza, capritza tza,…… Nu cred ca aceasta repetitie era intamplatoare.

Mosul Timp
Un alt aspect legat de tetraktis este legatura pe care acesta o are cu marele ciclu al timpului. In credintele hinduse timpul se imparte in 4 parti mari si 10 parti mici. Numele celor 4 parti mari (yugas) sunt: krita, treta, dvapara, kali. Marele ciclu este impartit in zece parti egale si care sunt distribuite celor 4 yugas in felul urmator: Krita- 4, treta-3, dvapara-2, kali-1. Si iata ca am dat din nou peste tetraktis.

La momentul actual ne aflam in Kali Yuga, perioada de intuneric spiritual, aceasta este perioada cea mai scurta. Dupa Kali Yuga urmeaza Krita Yuga, care este inceputul unui nou ciclu, lumina spirituala se v-a afla la maximum in aceasta perioada. In limba romana krita “suna” ca si creta (material ALB!!!). Coincidenta?

Ce altceva au mai invatat stramosii Daci de la Zalmoxe? Numai Zalmoxe stie.

A while ago, in a praise of karbon 2.0 I wrote, someone commented on the “lack” of tools in karbon, as opposed to inkscape. And from forum posts, or identi.ca, it seems to cause some confusions. For instance, there is no rectangle or circle tool in karbon. And there will never be. The reason is that for KOffice 2, the tools are meant for user interraction, and for manipulating object in the canvas. Inserting shapes is done through the “Add shape” docker, which allow to manager your collection of customs shapes, as well as standard shapes, you can then just drag and drop the shape, or select a shape and then by clicking and dragging on the canvas you can select the size of the shape like with a tool. Once the shape is on the canvas you can go to the toolbox and start having fun with your shape.

And of course, since the technology is shared, you add shapes to other KOffice application in the same way. To add a text in Krita ? Go to the add shape docker, drag and drop, and enjoy ! To add an image to your presentation in KPresenter ? Go to the add shape docker, drag and drop, and enjoy ! To add a smiley to KWord… you get it !

One of the new thing of the upcoming 2.1 release for Krita (among improved stability) is that the OpenGTL library is now even more integrated, which makes it even easier to write cool filters or generators for Krita.

Today, I will speak about generators. Since Krita 2.0, there is a special kind of layers in Krita: generators, it’s like a normal layer, except that the pixel are generated automatically. In 2.0, the only generator available was a plain color generator. In 2.1, you can write your generator using the Shiva language.

The value of the input pixel is computed in evaluatePixel, while evaluateDependents is used to initialize some constants.

Then to use your generator in krita you just need to copy it to ~/.kde/share/apps/krita/shiva/kernels. As you can see, I have made a metaball generators, integrated in krita, with its option widget:

Renk Modelleri: Krita içe aktarım, dışa aktarım, boya renkleri, baskı seçerek, kesme ve yapıştırma. 8, 16 ve 32 bit renk uzayı bulunmaktadır (RGB, CMYK, L * A * b *, …) ve renkler renk tekerleği, RGB veya palet’ten seçilebilir. Krita ayrıca OpenCTL tabanlı renk uzayı eklentilerini ve İnternet’ten bulabileceğiniz diğer kullanıcıların uzay eklentilerini desteklemektedir.

RENK YONETIMI

Krita’nin en iddaali olduğu konulardan birisi ise renk yönetimi. bildiğiniz gibi iki resmin renk tonları  ayni olmayabiliyor. örneğin beyaz fonlu olan iki resimi birisinin beyazı biraz daha bej rengine benzerken diğer resimdeki beyaz ise sut beyazı olabiliyor. Siz bu resimlerden birinin bir bolumunu diğer resme yapıştırırken renk buyuk bir sorun haline gelebiliyor. Ekranı ikiye bölüp incelediğinizde açıkça belli olacak bu farkı müdahale ederek ayni tona getirmeye çalışıyorsunuz.

Krita bunu sizin yerinize yapabiliyor. Renklerin numarasına göre gerçekleştiriliyor bu islem. Gerçekten de çok faydalı olan bu yeteneği ile Krita sizi buyuk is ve emek kaybından kurtarıyor. Resim boyutuna göre biraz yavaş olabilen bir islem ama faydaları düşünüldüğünde değer diye düşüneceksiniz.

Tabletlerle çalışmak

Hemen hemen bütün tabletler Pardus ortamında sorunsuz tanınmasına rağmen aldığınız tablet markasına göre bazı ayarlar yapmanızı gerektirebilir. Bunun için ozgurlukicin.com ‘da biraz arama yapmanız yeterli olacaktır. “http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/index.php/howto/main”

Tabletinizin Krita ile birlikte kullanabileceğiniz 3 farklı özelliği bulunmakta:

1. imleç   : Tablet ile birlikte gelen fare
2. Silgi     : Kalemin ust kisminda  ki yuvarlak uc
3. Stil ucu:  Kalemin sivri ucu

Standart olarak krita kalemimizin stil ucunu fırça imleci de piksel fırçası olarak algılayacaktır. Silgi ucu ile hatalarımızı düzeltebiliriz. Bu standartları ayarlar sekmesinden değiştirebilirsiniz. Eğer birden fazla tabletiniz var ise bu tabletlere farklı ayarlar verebilirsiniz. Her takip çıkarmada Krita bu tabletlerin ayarlarını hatırlayacaktır.

ÖRNEK : Bir çiçeğin kenarları

Eğer önceden tablet deneyiminiz olsa bile ufak bir alışma evresi herkese yararlı olacaktır. Bunun için basit bir obje olan çiçek kullanacağız.

Önce çiçeğin ana hatları için bir katman oluşturmalıyız. Eğer Kritanin kilitleme özelliğini kullanarak resmi sabitlerseniz bu sizi hata yapmaktan kurtaricaktir. çiçeğin dış hatlarını takip ederek çizmek gerçekten kolay gözükebilir ama elinizin tablet üzerindeki hareketi ile çizgiler oluşturma için güzel bir alıştırma.  Hatasız bir çizimden sonra elimize aşağıdaki gibi bir sekil geçiyor.

Renklendirme için üçüncü bir katman oluşturmanız gerekir. oluşturduğumuz bu katmanı çizdiğimiz ana hat katmanın altına taşıyoruz. Bu ana hat katmanını kilitlemeyi unutmuyoruz.

Ana hat çizmekten çok daha kolay olan renklendirme bölümünde sadece çizeceğimiz rengi paletten seçmek ve doldurma aracı ile istediğimiz bolumu boyamak. çizdiğimiz ana hatlarımızın içinde kalan bolum boyanacak böylece resmimiz oluşacaktır.  aşağıdaki resimde çiçeğin derin kısımlarına ana hat çizgisi bulunmuyor. Buralara farklı renklendirmek için oraya ufak çizgilerle tamamlayarak boyamak resmimizi çok daha güzel gösterecektir.

NOT: Yukardaki resme bu örnekte anlatılmayan bir kaç islem daha uygulanmıştır. (Gölgelendirme, aydınlatma vs.)

Bu yazımızda Krita nin genel özelliklerinden ve tabletlerle uyumundan bir örnek verebildik. Ne yazık ki bütün özelliklerine yeteneklerine değinecek kadar yerimiz mevcut değil. Pardus deposundan rahatlıkla kurulabilen krita bizim bu yazıda anlattığımızdan çok daha fazlasını yapabileceğini kanıtlamak için okuyucularımızı bekliyor.

After more than three years of development, a total rewrite of KWord, KPresenter and Karbon. Major evolution in KSpread and Krita, to adjust to the new shapes-based framework, the KOffice team has released version 2.0.0 today, which is the first milestone for the KOffice 2 serie. We are aware that this release is far to be perfect, and we still recommand the use of 1.6.3 over 2.0.0, but it open the way to further improvement, first with further bug fixes released in the 2.0.x branch, with three planned maintaince released, about one every month (2.0.x maintenance cycle) and with a 2.1 features release in October (2.1 Release plan).

The main goal of this release is to show the new technologies and user interraction. So we would like to encourage developers to have a look at what they can do as plugins, and to tell us about their experience. And to encourage users to test the new interface and to comments on it.

Today it’s ten years since Matthias Ettrich proposed the idea to write a full-features raster graphics editor, which started the development of the application that we know as Krita today. It’s interesting how Krita changed over the years and how different developers and their visions influenced the development process. Even though the original idea was to develop a replacement for the Kimp hack (which caused a controversial discussion at that time), development went into it’s own direction.

When I joined Krita in 2004, Boudewijn had just picked up development and the new vision was to develop a painting app. Soon more developers with other motivations joined the team and the other aspects like photo editing were added. A bit funny is that I’m neither an artist nor a photographer and I didn’t have a use for an image editing app at that time. I just wanted to work on an exciting project with a nice team, which turned out to be the case for Krita. Meanwhile I have become a lot more interested in computer graphics.

Since then a lot of progress has been made. This is a screenshot I made, just after I finished my second patch (implementing the first dockers) for Krita back in 2004. At this point Krita couldn’t do much more than the really simple painting.

From there development really took off and lots of features got added, leading to three releases with KOffice 1.4 (preview), 1.5 and 1.6. Krita also won the 2006 Akademy Award for Best Application. After that we entered the very long KOffice 2 development cycle, which brought lots of changes and new features to Krita. The good thing is that the next release will happen in a few days and the next versions will be out faster again.

So what will the next 10 years bring? It’s impossible to predict where it will go in the next years. Even though a larger vision of a painting app exists, Krita is mostly driven by the interests of it’s developers. I think there are enough ideas flying around at the moment to keep us busy for the next twenty years. Many things will be discussed on the next KOffice meeting in two weeks, including performance, brushes and collaborative editing.

Gimpshop is a hack made on the top of the original Gimp Project.  This makes users who are already familiar with the layout of Photoshop feel right at home in this open source application.

For functionality and as well as look must install Gimp 2.6 and Gimpshop together. It’ll not exceed more than 50 MB so your data still have enough space to move here and there and your system will not feel much burden.

Krita is another option for Linux and Unix users. Krita is an open source image editing and drawing application. Krita is a part of Koffice. Krita comes with lot more external plug-ins, so you download those plug-ins according to your needs. Krita is quite similar to Adobe Photoshop and its look is also very similar to Adobe CS3.  The only drawback of this open source application is that, it is only for Linux/Unix users.

Seashore is an open source image editor for Mac OS X’s Cocoa Framework. It is basic image editing application for average user. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It has features like gradients, textures, anti-aliasing etc.Seashore is a great basic tool that more than serves the needs of most of its users.

Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.
