i finished a short (15ish) page story today. i’ve been enjoying this time ive had alone to write and push myself. but now that thanksgiving break is over and normal work will kick in again i can say that i am ready. i’m ready to work through the next 2-3 weeks until the end of the quarter.

i’m dancing with a few options for my next writing piece. i have an idea for a short story, but i also have an idea for another novel. the only issue i am having is that the novel is very close in nature to the last one i wrote, ‘Filthrot: An Oral History of New Jersey’s Hardcore Kings’. if i do write it, it will be the first time i have ever written two similar books back to back. or really… at all. the four i have finished are all different… so this is a hard choice.

in other news, i have watched two films in the past day, and neither was worth reviewing… so i am kind of sad about that. but i do have a movie sitting here that i think is well worth a review. i will be putting that up in the next day or so.

but for all of you who read this page (and there sure seem to be a bunch) i want to say thanks. thanks for coming here even if only for a few seconds every now and then. thank you for reading my words, and thank you to those of you who have emailed me about my reviews, my updates, and a slew of other things. really, thanks.

expect a film and an album review in the near future.

Cate Le Bon

The shop window of the newly-opened All Saints store on the Hayes is full of beautiful, antique sewing machines. They sit there in nice rows, neatly aligned and dormant, subservient to the window aesthetic. Once individual icons, their sole function now is just dressing for the multi-million pound St David’s 2 complex. Their heritage equally pawned and ignored as customers head for the cash-till.

Okay, they’re probably not antique anyway, they’re probably snap-fixed in Spitalfields and have less milage than Katie Price’s typewriter. But looking at those sewing machines on the weekend felt like standing outside the Point just a year ago, pondering the future of Cardiff and the embarrassing cultural death that seemed to be conspiring against it.

The Coal Exchange already closed and the Point served with a noise abatement order that would ultimately contribute to it’s closure, it felt like a solemn question mark hung over the head of everyone who loves dipping their daps into the city’s music venues. With the craggy spires of St David’s 2 emerging above the horizon it seemed the city couldn’t give a shit about our heritage. Shut down, decay and move on – like Cardiff always has done (look at pictures of the old decaying docks in the seventies for instance, and compare it with Bristol or Manchester; history you can still see and touch).

Cardiff doesn’t love us, you see. They won’t close a tiny, cobbly lane for Swn Festival and having shown little support for the Point are prepared to lose yet another venue in the Globe. But like the beautiful suckers we are, we love Cardiff. We fight to keep the Vulcan open; we put our hard-earned into Kruger and 3 Syllables gigs; we sit and watch the colours change in Bute Park. We buy chips on Caroline St, but we put the wrappers in the bin. We suffer the closure of a venue, or the loss of a promoter, but we move on; or we stand up and do it ourselves.

The small team of people behind Cardiff Arts Institute, which opens this Thursday (5 November), love Cardiff in exactly the same way. They’re the usual suspects, the people you always see at gigs; or putting on gigs. The ones at the till when you arrive and the ones paying the bands when you leave. They probably still bear the scabs of all those venue closures; fall-outs with bar managers; £800 shortfall for that Portland band they brought over who everyone said they would catch but never turned up to see. But like fingers to toothache, they keep coming back for more. “Ouch! Passion must prevail!” they squeal.

Cardiff Arts Institute (or CAI) is backed by 580 Ltd – the folk behind Field Day, London’s Amersham Arms and Lock Tavern, Bristol’s Start the Bus and the Adventures in the Beetroot Field club nights – but it’s this team of usual suspects that are likely to make it a success. Led by the creative minds of Milgi and Secret Carnival, perhaps the most exciting and welcoming thing about CAI is its participatory policy. To “Offer a platform to encourage collaboration, participation and activity,” as the first point of their manifesto states (yes, they have a manifesto!).

Setting up a venue with the likes of 580, it would have been so easy to leap ahead on an ego trip, and possibly they might have even succeeded. Yet by actively encouraging collaboration, CAI can pull together the best of Cardiff for the benefit of Cardiff. Yes, that may seem very utopian and we’ll have to see how things go over the next few months but one thing is for sure – they are highly serious. Tickets prices are likely to be as little as £2 or £3, or even free (such as the BLK JKS show on 27 November) and the venue’s first month line-up is certainly an eye-opener: Jon Carter, Andy Votel, Monotonix, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Bethan Elfyn, Decimals, plus some great nights like Flux=Rad (John Rostron and Jen Long), Wonky Disco (Kruger) and Gas Station Bop!. And that’s not to mention the ridiculous launch night they’ve put together (full line-up below).

Sometimes you’re faced with the grim reality that what Cardiff needs, Cardiff never gets (“I want doesn’t get!” as my nan used to say), but this autumn of 2009, something does feel a little different. The Coal Exchange has reopened, Millennium Music Hall is pulling in the likes of Annie Mac and Ed Banger’s DJ Mehdi, the Vulcan has been saved (for now), and hopefully the same will be true for the Globe. Swn have just put on their finest festival yet. And even the doubters (including myself) are secretly proud Cardiff is attracting the kind of investment that brings an All Saints to the city (I mean, have you seen the clothes in Zara?).

Just spare a thought for those sewing machines.

Cardiff Arts Institute, 29 Park Place, Cardiff opens on 5 November at 8pm. The full line-up for the weekend launch (5-8 Nov) is:

Cate Le Bon, Jon Carter & Friends, Joy Formidable, Moneyshot, Bob Bob & Marana, Tomb Crew, the Apples, Six Toys, Samba Galez, Matt the Hat, Kaptain, Wonkey Disco (Kruger DJs), Casper (Bloggers Delight) and The Institute DJs.

Entry is by invitation only – email spike@cardiffartsinstitute.org

Website: www.cardiffartsinstitute.org

We aim to:

Offer a platform to encourage collaboration, participation and activity.

Cerebral fusion of exploratory electronica and jarring instrumentalism that suggests Lightening Bolt pondering the Warp back catalogue, Three Trapped Tigers employ a classically-trained background with a desire to create their own fine anomaly in sound.

It’s their rejection of the actual tools of electronica that makes them so interesting however. Informed by artists like Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and DJ Shadow, Three Traped Tigers explore the possibilities and mental emotion of such music by refusing to rely on any backing tracks at their shows and recording their music entirely live, without overubs and absolutely no computer sequencing.

The stubborn concept is intriguing and if their name creates an image of primeval beasts exploring their own confinement through wondrous self-rage then the subtle, emerging symphonies and improvisation certainly live up to that expectation.

Howdy!

I have just finished the Livingstone – Mozambique tour. The tour was very fantastic. We had wonderful clients of which 2 of them were visiting Africa for the first time. South Luangwa as usual was like paradise, our clients saw a leopard on the night game drive there. The local game ranger told us that he has not seen leopard during the day recently.

Male Leopard in Kruger

When we went to Kruger National Park, Jeff (second guide) and I wanted to make sure that we have to find a leopard during the day for our clients to see. Amazingly as we were doing the game drive, driving from Letaba to Satara there the male leopard was lying on its stomach on the tree trunk facing our direction, with its four legs hanging on both sides of the tree trunk. This was only 10- 15 meters from us and guesse what? It was during the day around eleven in the morning!! At one point the leopard stood up and changed its position. It showed us its back, lied down and stood up again as if someone was signaling to it to model for us. It started clinging its jaws and finally came down from the tree and started stalking the Kudu’s, oohhh! What luck!

We left the Plettenberg Bay area and made for an enchanting town called Hogsback. With its J.R. Tolkien connection the town has an odd feel. Surrounding areas with names such as Hobbiton and Middle Earth. Our accommodation was called “Away with the Fairies”. It too was quirky and somewhat enchanted – sort of!

Yet again we were frustrated by a bank holiday weekend in visiting a game reserve. This time it was Kruger. As the quotas had been reached we were refused entry. Undaunted we continued to the Blyde River Canyon the next day only to find more of the same, except worse. The traffic was unbearable. We took consolation at the Three Rondvels and headed for Johannesburg.

Groot Marico was a quick stop over on the way to our holy grail, Madikwe. Let me explain what Madikwe means to us. When the days and nights got hard we kept telling ourselves “Madikwe!”. When the hotel room was flea ridden and the food was dire we kept telling ourselves “Madikwe!”. When it all got too much we kept telling ourselves “Madikwe!”.

We knew Madikwe (from a previous trip) had giant earthy well thought out lodges with fluffy king size beds and pillows, an out door shower with a view, beautiful food, attentive service, game drives and all nestled in the bush. It has been our Mecca ever attracting us from the start and it didn’t disappoint. Especially once I finally got to see Wild Dog.

Our pictures just dont do the lodge justice so CLICK HERE for more info.

The African Safari is now officially over. Flights off this great continent booked. But to where? Watch this space…

Mon 12/10/09
Started early lots of driving today to start the tour. Got stuck in peak hr traffic before heading out of Pretoria and into the beautiful countryside. Went via Panorama Route up to the Blyde River Canyon, spectacular scenery. Stopped at some fantastic viewing spots: 3 Rondavels, God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Stunning scenery, took some photos but with a point and shoot digital can’t do justice, but so awesome! Stayed at Hippo Hollow - 3 star, but to Rod and I felt like 5 stars, absolutely beautiful place! There are real hippos in this place. They come out at night up onto the river bank. We had guards to keep us safe as they can kill us! So amazing, we saw a few but very difficult to take a photo. Tonight we had a special dinner – we were welcomed with banging drums, the Chief and singing and dancing. We had a typical SA BBQ for dinner – the food was glorious! So yummy. Awesome first day and night on tour!

Tuesday 13/10/09
Today was Kruger National Park today – up very early! 5 am start, but well worth it. We travelled to KNP by coach and the swapped over to a jeep with 9 people in it. Open windows on the sides with a roof. Absolutely amazing day. Overcast and stormy to start off with but got to about 36 by 12 noon. We just drove around for 8.5 hours with our ranger, trying to find animals. We didn’t see the big 5 but we did see a leopard up close and personal and there aren’t many of those left in the park even the ranger was imppressed! We saw zebras, giraffes, elephants, deer, water buffalo all quite close, got some ammazing photos. We also saw crocs and hippos in the water, plus lots of bird life. Both Rod and I were in heaven. It was such an awesome day! Safari rocks! In the arvo arrived back at Hippo Hollow, swam, relaxed, drank mojitos on the deck watching the hippos- what a life hey! Had dinner in the restaraunt, it was superb, felt like 5 star dining to me! Added bonus to mkae it even more mysterious the power went out and then the back up generator failed too, but no one cared. Was an awesome day and a fantastic evening. This tour is soooooooo good!

Wed 14/10/09
Today up again early, left HH at 8am. Buffet breakfasts all included everyday, so yummy, trying not to eat too much as we don’t have much of a chance to walk around. Drove south east towards Swaziland. We have comfort stops along the way. We stopped in No Man’s Land and had a guided tour thru a traditional village, more singing and dancing and then another spectacular buffet lunch with a croc in the pond. We drove into Swaziland, beautiful country, has the BEST scenery in the world. So relaxing driving on the bus and watching the world go by. Everyone everywhere is so friendly. I feel very safe here and in South Africa! Visited a glass blowing factory where they make things out of recycled glass. Finally bought something for ouselves. Then onto our hotel, Luggogo Sun - I’d say 10 star man! 3 hotels on one site and you have access to all 3!!! Not hot enough for swimming, but we walked up to the top hotel, superb views yet again. Rod did some bird watching while I came back to the room and updated my blog.

We are having the BEST time! I hope that you can see my photos when I get the Flickr account sorted……

Ending a complete lack of suspense, director Michael Bay announced on his Web site Thursday that he is officially on board to direct a third “Transformers” film for Paramount. The release date has been shuttled up a full year, from July 1, 2012, to July 1, 2011.

Stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are slated to return, as is “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” co-writer Ehren Kruger. Steven Spielberg will executive produce, as he did on the first two films, which have grossed more than $1.5 billion worldwide.

Bay wrote that he met with ILM in San Francisco Thursday morning, followed by a flight to Rhode Island with Kruger to meet with Hasbro about new characters.

“Well, it’s official: We have a great ‘Transformers 3′ story,” Bay said on his site. “Today is Day One.”

Paramount’s Summer 2011 is shaping up to have four tentpoles: Marvel features “Thor” and “First Avenger: Captain America” bow May 20 and July 22, respectively. And the DreamWorks Animation sequel “Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom” hits theaters June 3.

A Kruger National Park Safari holiday provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy a unique bush co

A Kruger National Park Safari holiday provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy a unique bush country adventure . This nature preserve is SA’s largest and it covers more than 217 miles from north to south and 37 miles from east to west.

The Park is bordered on the north by the country of Zimbabwe and bordering Mozambique can be found on the eastern border. Kruger state Park Safari packages have become a top tourist attraction because they supply people the opportunity to experience a real’Big Game’ African adventure . It also is a way for visitors to explore the culture of the local clans.

in the summer it is very humid and the temperatures often reach a hundred degrees. The wet season happens from May-September. Your best time to go to this area is in the dry winter season. The days are milder and the air is dryer. In addition, since foliage is scanty, the power to see wildlife during your Kruger national Park Safari is more rewarding and you can absolutely like watching the animals that are drawn to the waterholes each morning and evening.

When you head out on a Kruger National Park Safari you’ll see the massive Five – lions, African elephants, leopards, Black Rhinos and Cape Buffaloes. Kruger is home to more than 150 species of mammals, this variety is more intensive than you’ll find at any other African Game Preserve. In addition there are over 110 species of reptiles, including 3k crocodiles.

There are many differing types of Kruger National Park Safari packages that are available. You can select one that suits your particular travel schedule or request that one be custom-made to fit your wishes. Some of the camping safaris have all terrain vehicles with open tops and the guides will drive you about in the night as well as during day light hours. You may experience the excitement of a’game walk’ through the open bush country. A self drive style Kruger Park safari is available too. The roads are well marked but they alter from paved to dirt. There are rest stop stations that are found in numerous sections of the Park. If you’re undecided about striking out alone on this kind of tour you can make a request for the services of one of the rangers in the area.

Kruger National Park hotels offer guests a range of different lodging accommodations. There is a wide choice available from high end lodges to tents and local electrified camping huts. If you choose one of the walking safaris you’ll be treated to walk-on tents with real beds that give you further comfort while not detracting from the sounds and sights of sleeping in outdoors.
.

A Blenheim woman claims her family is still suffering effects from a nearby wind farm.

Kruger Energy’s 44-turbine Port Alma project became operational last year.

Nikki Horton, who filed a complaint with the Montreal-based company, said the wind farm is impacting her family’s quality of life, with symptoms such as headaches and fatigue.

“We’re still ill. We’re still sleep deprived,” she said. “Our children are still experiencing problems.”

Horton said Kruger conducted a noise report earlier this year. She received the results recently.

“It left me with a lot of unanswered questions,” she said. “They seem to be trying to blame our problems on other things, but we’re pretty sure it’s the wind turbines.”

Horton said she is planning to soundproof her home since she doesn’t want to move. Some of these measures include triple-paned windows and new insulation.

“We’re hoping that will help,” she said.

Horton believes wind energy supporters are pushing forward without seeing the impact on residents.

“Turning a blind eye to all these people who are having problems is not going to make it go away,” she said.

Blenheim’s Pam Mazerolle also sent a letter to Kruger on the issues she and her husband are having. She said they’ve been having headaches that even their doctor can’t explain.

“We also have a big concern regarding our property value, now that these turbines are in our backyard the value has gone down. Ask yourself, ‘Would you want to live this close to them?’” she wrote. “Please don’t get us wrong, we are all for green energy, anything to help the planet, it has been damaged enough.

“But when do we say, ‘Wait a minute our health and way of life comes first?’”

Mazerolle said she’s also seen a change of behaviour in her horse, which “seemed more jumpy,” and would pace around in circles at night.

Jean Majeau, Kruger’s senior vice-president of communications, said the matter was investigated. He said it was also reported to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.

“We had one turbine that was not properly working,” he said. “The corrections have been made and we had also done an independent study that everything had come back to normal.

“As far as we are concerned, the file is closed.”

This leads to a perverse result where less competent people will rate their own ability higher than relatively more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence because competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. “Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others.”

Optimism bias is the demonstrated systematic tendency for people to be over-optimistic about the outcome of planned actions. This includes over-estimating the likelihood of positive events and under-estimating the likelihood of negative events.
