Following on from last year’s well publicised Arctic expedition by a gaggle of artistic types who included Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Feist, Jarvis Cocker and Robyn Hitchcock, organised by climate change organisation Cape Farewell to “instigate a cultural response to climate change”, comes the Shift Festival, a week-long series of events to run in late January at London’s Southbank Centre. Among the first events to be announced is a ‘Maritime Evening’ on January 30 with Robyn Hitchcock and friends to celebrate his trip to the icy tip of Greenland. So far these friends include the lovely Kathryn Williams and KT Tunstall, with more to be announced. Comedian Marcus Brigstocke will host the previous night’s entertainment with some as yet unannounced musical guests. Both events will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, and tickets are on sale now.

Cape Farewell founder David Buckland is planning another Arctic expedition for 2010, this time setting out to explore the Russian tundra. Look out for more info on who’ll be going with him later in the year. Kathryn Williams releases her new album The Quickening in February through a new deal with One Little Indian.

He can't sing all that well, but somehow it's okay when he's doing his own material. Uploaded by ind

He can't sing all that well, but somehow it's okay when he's doing his own material. Uploaded by indiehipster.com.

When we look back on a relationship, we don’t remember it in a linear, chronological manner. Our minds flash forward and back, calling up the joys and heartaches. That’s the breakthrough this Bob Dylan song achieved – it breaks the conventions of storytelling through what we’d now call “real-time” experience.

Uploaded by about.com.

There are lots of unusual things about this song, part of Dylan’s album “Blood on the Tracks,” released in 1975. For one thing, it has seven verses, and no chorus. And Dylan recorded several versions of the song, changing the lyrics each time and often changing the point of view from first to third person. (Psst, Bob: It’s ten times better and more immediate in the first person. Leave…it…alone.)

Dylan described the song’s narrative form this way: “What’s different about it is that there’s a code in the lyrics, and there’s also no sense of time. There’s no respect for it. You’ve got yesterday, today and tomorrow all in the same room, and there’s very little you can’t imagine not happening.” And he said, “It took ten years to live, and two years to write.”

Rolling Stone named “Tangled Up in Blue” number 68 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. (For Rolling Stone, “all time” means the rock and roll era.) In any case, that’s way too low for this great song. One particularly special cover is by the Scottish singer KT Tunstall:

The one billionth purchase from Apple’s online music service iTunes was Coldplay’s “Spee

The one billionth purchase from Apple’s online music service iTunes was Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound”. It is the perfect song to illustrate how fast music is currently moving, with the help of the Internet.

iTunes alone is regularly used by around 14% of active internet users. Music downloads have quickly overtaken CD sales. In the US, 618.9 million albums were sold in 2005, down from 762.8 million in 2001. Downloads have become so popular that they have become instrumental in deciding the number one in the British singles charts. The trade association said download sales had already topped 23 million this year, a 400% increase on last year and now accounting for about 70% of weekly singles sales.

This fast moving medium has also allowed new bands to get their music to a wider audience and, therefore, to get a record deal faster than if they had simply sent off demos to every record company under the sun, gigged at every run-down village hall and prayed every night. One band to benefit from this is Arctic Monkeys, who were virtual unknowns a few years ago. They blasted onto the music scene with “I bet you look good on the dancefloor” from their album “Whatever people say I am that’s what I’m not”, and they even managed to crack the US top 30.

Sandi Thom has also harnessed the power of the internet to advance her career. She started out by performing for free using a webcam to broadcast live on the internet from her Tooting flat.

At the time her audience was reputed to have reached 250 000, enough to fill Wembly Stadium three times over: “We thought: ‘Surely there must be a way you can gig and not leave the house?” said Ms Thom.

One band that probably wouldn’t have been given a second glance by record companies is Nizlopi. A double bass and guitar folk combo, their ballad about the drive home from school in a JCB digger was serious competition for the Christmas number one in 2005. In the end, they missed out on the top spot because of the hype surrounding that year’s latest manufactured idol, Shayne Ward, a man so famous that most people can’t remember who he is. The same can be said of Gareth Gates, Michelle McManus and Steve Brookstein, all of whom have faded into relative obscurity following their success in TV talent contests and the subsequent number 1.

Exhibit A, M’lud. TV. It was instrumental in the death of the longevity of the modern band. Once the life expectancy could be around 30 or more years. Now thanks to the voting public that life span is considerably shorter, a few years if you are very lucky.

The internet and manufactured singers have ensured that the modern music lover is quite fickle, liking what they are told is cool by those who control what song it released, and by whom. It is too early to tell if all those who have made their name on the Internet will suffer the same fate, although is has to be said that Nizlopi have not been heard of since the JCB Song.

Yet there are still artists out there doing thing the old fashioned way. KT Tunstall has made her way in the music world with just her acoustic guitar and the trusty effects pedal she calls “Wee Bastard”. Kate ‘KT’ Tunstall was getting used to disappointment. The dreams she had dreamt since the age of 16, of making a living from her music, of having people like her songs, were not exactly bearing fruit. She was 30 before she got her big break (a geriatric in music terms), with her debut album Eye to the Telescope becoming the biggest-selling album by a female artist in Britain as well as gaining widespread critical acclaim.

KT also picked up several accolades including a Brit award for Best British Female Solo Artist and fulfilled her dreams with a Mercury Music prize nomination: “I used to lust over a Mercury nomination as a busker on the dole.”. Before that she had been reduced to touring with her trusty guitar, doing every gig going, living the life of a penniless musician.

The Arctic Monkeys may have had swift success, but they will lack the intense feeling of personal satisfaction that Ms Tunstall must have gained by doing the groundwork by herself. She found her fans instead of letting the fans find her.

Time will tell who lasts longer but it may be premature to simply assume that the old ways will be killed off by the internet.

Here’s the songs that are topping my playlist this week. As always, a couple of these will be used in the music round on Oct. 14. The link will take you to iTunes to hear a sample of the songs.

Yogi Raves

Cool things to complement your yoga on and off the mat.

VIDEO:

Stroke of Insight: Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor

I’ve been talking a lot about the Grid lately. Not just the grid of living in a city, using electricity, etc. But the grid in our minds. The attachment and agreement we make subconsciously that keeps us tied to ways of living that stunt us, that bury the essence of who we are, that make us feel separate and disconnected to the whole. The grid that tells us that inequities, injustice and bureaucracy are “just the way things are these days.”

Well, if you ever had any inkling in the pit of your belly that it doesn’t have to be that way, watching this amazing VIDEO about the grid and how a brain clot became a ’stroke’ of insight for brain researcher Jill Bolte Taylor, will reaffirm your knowing that regardless of popular grid propoganda, we have a choice. A choice in each moment to be present, to step into the deep knowing within all of us that we are connected to all things. That separateness is only an illusion from the limited scope of living within the lines of a grid and that each moment is an opportunity to step into the expansion of wholeness. Wooooo…(insert trippy music here.)

P.S. This video is part of TED. An amazing resource to hear people speak, perform, etc. about the human experience. Check TED out too!

MUSIC:

David’s Birthday by Love You Moon

Boingy and yet a little heavy. Sometimes there is just something about the intonation of someone’s speech that is just kinda slinky and cool. Even when the song is boppy, Matt Embree’s voice makes you feel like he’s singing with one eyebrow up, head cocked and maybe a knowing look on his face just before he turns with a slow wink.

I Want You Back cover by KT Tunstall

One of my favorite versions of this song. It was done long before M.Jackson died. KT Tunstall’s recording her own background while she’s playing live and looping as she performs. It’s cool.

Beach Town by Le Loup

This song is kind of like how it feels to fall asleep sometimes. Chatter, bumps, tings, thumps in the head, till maybe a rhythm of movement is revealed, then melody lilting, lifting into frenzy that is anchored only by it’s own heavy fullness and finally… silence.

PLACES:

Hostel In The Forest… Brunswick, GA

Speaking of getting off the grid a bit… plan a trip to The Hostel in the Forest and get a little reminder of what that’s like. Affectionately known in these parts as, The Tree Hostel, this place is a must visit. Located in Brunswick, GA, just a couple hours south of Savannah, you feel like you have the space to remember yourself when you are there.

The glass house is great for meditating, yoga, or just chilling out. The center of the (clothing optional) lake has a floating dock that is often the spot of many great conversations with visitors from all over the country/world and a place you can just bask in the sun silently. 7pm is communal dinner. Wholesome, organic and vegetarian. Chickens walking around. Bonfires at night. The Hostel is whatever you allow yourself to experience.

Cost is $25 per night and 1 hour of your time helping out around the Hostel. Ok, enough talk. Each time there is different, so just go already! Tell them I sent you.

1 2 3 4 5

Reviewed for FasterLouder

It is surprising that musicians don’t do this kind of thing more – getting together for the sake of the music, collaborating and sharing the experience of songwriting. One way to do it is the ‘supergroup’ which can either work (Them Crooked Vultures, Temple Of The Dog) or can be a turgid affair (Chickenfoot, Tinted Windows). The model that Neil Finn has developed, where a group of musicians travel to New Zealand with their families and gather to write and record, much like a working holiday.

The Sun Came Out is the second album from the 7 Worlds Collide collective. The first featured Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), members of Radiohead and Johnny Marr (The Smiths). Pretty much a line-up to drool over for indie and rock fans. The new project features many of the same musicians from 2001 plus members of Wilco, Bic Runga, KT Tunstall and Glenn Richards (Augie March). Wilco are often called the ‘American Radiohead’ so to get these chaps together is a fairly monumental musical summit.

As a result of the relaxed beach atmosphere and the extended family vibe of the whole project the songs all flow by breezily, with an americana tinge to many of them. It is effortless pop that drips with melodies and some wonderfully subtle playing.

Jeff Tweedy contributes a couple of tracks, the first being You Never Know from Wilco’s latest album. It is pure Wilco in sound and with the band recording some of their album on the visit it is essentially the same version you hear on that record. His other track What Could Have Been rolls along over a primitive drum machine and is the darker Tweedy, musing on past actions and consequences.

With Neil Finn being the head honcho he appears throughout the album, including the first song written and performed by Finn and wife Sharon. Neil has referred to Little By Little as their amateur version of ESG’s amateur pop funk. The song is a delightful sunny ode to children growing up and finding their own lives and Sharon’s voice suits the song – its not strong but it has a pop melodicism that sits well with Neil’s voice.

Neil’s Learn To Crawl sounds very Radiohead in the verses with Ed O’Brien’s treated guitar soundscaping in the background before the strident chorus surges forward. It is Finn showing another side to his writing beyond the Crowded House and more in tune with his solo work.

KT Tunstall contributes a very country pop styled track complete with ‘whoahs’, handclaps, and honky-tonk piano. It verges on Sheryl Crow at times but the playing and roughness around the edges pulls it back from the edge of MOR and gives it a more Jenny Lewis feel.

Johnny Marr’s track is the biggest disappointment of The Sun Came Out, meandering along without direction, intent or anything to really grab onto. Never possessing the strongest of voices,Marr’s song could surely have been replaced by one of the many other session tracks.

One of the big surprises is Radiohead’s Phil Selway who steps out from behind the kit and unveils a sweet Elliott Smith/Nick Drake acoustic number. He possesses a gentle keening voice and does well to temper it with mainly organic instrumentation. Lovely stuff.

Duxton Blues is Glenn Richards living out a dream. Imagine turning up with a song and having Johnny Marr and Neil Finn backing you. He doesn’t at all sound phased, delivering a strong track that strips away some of the clutter that sometimes clouds Augie March songs. Duxton Blues has one of the strongest choruses on the album, effortless, swelling and catchy.

7 Worlds Collide again proves to be more than a vanity project. Perhaps it can be criticised for its safeness and lack of stretch and experimentation but Finn’s choice of musicians and the idyllic surroundings dictated that songwriting would be the focus and the strength they would play too. The live concerts (to follow on DVD) will be a fascinating watch and one hopes that it won’t be another 7 years before Finn picks up the phone again.

KT Tunstall has an interesting song here. She is not really the kind of singer that we would feature

KT Tunstall has an interesting song here. She is not really the kind of singer that we would feature in counterclockworld. But this song was irresistible. Besides, she is extremely attractive. She was born to a half-Chinese half-scottish mother and an Irish father. False Alarm could mean a lot of things for those who have been in a relationship. This is not really a weird story. In fact it is more logical in its convoluted way.

False Alarm

She walked down the road. It was almost late. But there were some people around. The street lights were not shining bright. But added to her feeling of loneliness. She had just spent some time with him. It was the same old thing. He would try to convince her about how much he loved her. He used to hold her. Talk to her and made her feel better. She always wanted to be with him. And she was sure he wanted to be with her.

She kept walking. Kicking every small stone that came her way. One traveled into a straight line, all the way to her apartment. Maybe that was the only company she can have, so she picked the stone and put it in her bag.

At home she sat on her bed. Cried. Buried her face in her hands and wondered if she could bury her feelings in the same way. She lit up a cigarette and allowed herself to be full by the smoke that got in her lungs. From her 20th floor apartment she could see the entire east side of the city. With some imagination, she could even figure out where he stayed.

It was almost 10.30 pm. He must be playing with his daughter. And then maybe make love to his wife.

That really hurt. She was not able to take that thought. Maybe what he tells her is true. He and his wife are really not getting along and she is imagining too much. Why was she stuck in a relationship where the guy will never come out of his marriage?

She kept staring in the direction of his apartment. The entire city was lit under the dark sky. And just across all the tall buildings, the sea reflected the sky. There were no stars. Only darkness.

Why do you have so much hope? For the one you love, who will never come to you. Or why do hopeless people give so much meaning to your life?

Everytime he held her, she now realized that was a false alarm. It raised expectation. It made her feel wanted. To the extent that he will actually come for her. Forever.

She always wanted to see his wife. Not because she wanted to be in her position. Maybe that could help her understand him better. It was just an urge.

Later on, she saw her picture in a magazine and he had confirmed that she was his wife. She liked the picture. She looked attractive. Now she wanted to see her in real.

She waited for her outside the school throughout the hot afternoon. When his wife came for the daughter, she saw her in real. The picture had not lied. She was very attractive. She felt like an intruder.

Maybe being with another guy would help. She tried that. She could never feel the closeness. At best she could be someone else’s good friend. But being in love with someone else was out of the question.

Today was a different day. She had spent time with him and he told her that his wife had figured out this relationship that he was having with her. She did not say much. That is what really worried him. She should have been affected. She should have thrown a tantrum. But she did not react. He told her all that. He also told her what she meant to him. She knew that his wife also meant a lot.

In a few months time, his wife walked out on him with the child. That should have been good news for her. Now he was all hers. But there was a problem. Now she had stopped loving him. It was all pointless. She could not understand why she felt that way. But the whole adrenaline rush was gone. She told him that.

She sat in her apartment staring outside. But not at all interested in looking at his high-rise. She wondered why she could only be in love with married men. She lit a cigarette and put on KT Tunstall – False Alarm.

I’m trying to put this thing to bed
I’ve drugged it in its sleep
There isn’t many memories
I’m comfortable to keep

This ball keeps rolling on
It’s heading for the streets
Keep expecting you to send for me
The invitation never comes

Each time I turn around
There’s nothing there at all
So tell me why I feel like
I’m up against a wall

But maybe it’s a false alarm
And every answer sounds the same
Just colours bleeding into one
That hasn’t got a name
Maybe I can’t see
Maybe it’s just me

On the contrary, there are some I really like at least at much as the original, maybe even more (Marco Hietala’s vocals alone already makes Nightwish’s High Hopes so much better than the original. And we aren’t even talking about the arrangements yet.). These are usually covers where the musicians give the song a whole new feel and interpretation and play it in their style. Listen to some of my favourite covers and you’ll get what I mean!

One of the many gifts of living here in the Northern Rivers is the abundance of bird life. I am luck

One of the many gifts of living here in the Northern Rivers is the abundance of bird life. I am lucky enough to live on a property with a rainforest remnant plus tropical and native gardens, so there is no shortage of beautiful birdlife for me to enjoy. And while they are lucky enough to be wild and free, I do feel that they are my little buddies. When it comes to music, bird references are to be found in every genre, so I had plenty to choose from in this week’s show about BIRDS. Some of the songs I chose were just plain silly and some very serious. But what they all revealed was a little bit about how we relate avian qualities to our lives and ourselves.

We started the show with the incredibly appropriate I LIKE BIRDS from the Eels’ album Daisies of the Galaxy. And why wouldn’t you like a creature that has come to represent peace, freedom and happiness to name just a few of the more positive traits that appear in this week’s play-list?

History, however, hasn’t been too kind to blackbirds. They are often portrayed negatively, even though they are just as good looking and intelligent as other species. Paul McCartney spins this symbolism into a message of hope in the Beatles 1968 hit BLACKBIRD. We followed with The Be Good Tanyas and their version of Clarence Ashley’s THE COO COO BIRD. I’ve discovered that the Coo-Coo bird, unlike most other birds, rarely occur in pairs or as part of a group. Shy and retiring, they’d rather be heard than seen. Hmmm. Sounds a bit like a couple of radio presenters I know…

A nice triple play followed: Bob Marley with the very optimistic THREE LITTLE BIRDS, LITTLE WING from Jimi Hendrix and then the Purple one, Prince, pumped it out with WHEN DOVES CRY.

Alfred Hitchcock was one of the quirkiest directors ever. His 1963 film THE BIRDS, starring Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedron was notable for its lack of music. Except for a couple of songs sung by characters in the film, the soundscape was made up of screeching birds. The trailer for the film was just as idiosyncratic. Hitchcock presents it himself, under the guise of A LECTURE ON BIRDS. I think its hilarious. Take a look:

The Bluebird is a common symbol of happiness and optimism. Two songs we played, that epitomise this notion, are Johnnie Taylor’s LITTLE BLUEBIRD and Ella Fitzgerald, the queen of scat, singing BLUE SKIES.

John Lennon sings of the Sweet Bird of Paradox in SURPRISE, SURPRISE from his 1974 album Walls and Bridges. We followed that with KT Tunstall’s WHITE BIRD. An excellent artist who, despite the awards and peer support cruises under the radar somewhat. Take a look at this clip and become a fan:

Ready for some classical? No, its not Swan Lake. It’s my favourite Duck, DAFFY, with his version of THE HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY:

One of my favourite Australian singers is Jack Ladder. From the Love is Gone album, MOTHER, is a strange little song that likens his Mum to a chicken (I think…). The song also references BIRDS THE WORD and we took a listen to the RIVINGTONS original version of that tune too.

Taj Mahal and Etta James sang a great version of MOCKINGBIRD, originally recorded by Inez and Charlie Foxx and one of the last hits for Australian icon Johnny O’Keefe (with Margaret McLaren).

How could we have a show about BIRDS and not include Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker. His nickname was originally ‘Yardbird’ and that was shortenend over time to simply ‘Bird’. There are two stories as to how he got the name: One was that he lived “free as a bird”. The other is that when touring with Jay McShann, they accidentally hit a chicken (a yardbird) with their car and Parker made them stop to pick it up so he could have his landlady cook it. I think I’m going to go with the first possibility. It fits beautifully with the track we played – BLUEBIRD.

I had to include the theme from the Woody Woodpecker Show. Mel Blanc was the original voice of this animated character. He also voiced Daffy Duck and many, many more of our favourite cartoon characters. Woody made his first appearance in a short film in 1940 and you’ll still find him on children’s cartoon shows today.

And how good is AIN’T NOBODY HERE BUT US CHICKENS by Louis Jordan? James Brown has been quoted as saying that Jordan was one of his greatest influences: “He could sing, he could dance, he could play, he could act. He could do it all.” Jordan’s vocal style was arguably an important precursor to rap. On our show for DAYS OF THE WEEK we played ”Saturday Night Fish Fry” (1950) which featured a rapid-fire, highly syncopated semi-spoken vocal delivery that is strongly reminiscent of the modern rap style.

No reason to leave the farmyard when you can play the Rolling Stones and LITTLE RED ROOSTER. Check out this clip featuring a very young, fresh faced Mick Jagger in 1965.

There are lots if songs about birds that talk of love and longing. Three that I particulary like are BLUEBIRDS OVER THE MOUNTAIN from Richie Valens, (also recorded by The Beach Boys), YELLOW BIRD from Chris Isaak and SONGBIRD by Bernard Fanning.

Time flew on this week’s show but before I flew the coop (groan…), I had time to play a rediscovery: A great songwriter and singer, still performing and probably better now than ever – Russell Morris with his 1972 hit THE WINGS OF AN EAGLE. Take a look at this recent clip and see if you agree. This song has a timeless quality.

Couldn’t resist closing the show with a piece of whimsy suggested by one of my loyal listeners: CHIRPY CHIRPY CHEEP CHEEP from the perfectly named band MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. This clip from Top of the Pops 1971 is worth including just for the outfits. I want those boots! And did I hear “bring back hot pants!”

Şi mărturisesc că sunt câteva melodii foarte bune şi simpatice. Postez câteva din cele care mie îmi plac cel mai mult aici:
