Am 1. Dezember 2009 ist wieder Weltaids-Tag und die LHG startet wie im Vorjahr eine große Spendenaktion zu Gunsten der Münchner Aidshilfe. Zusätzlich wurde zusammen mit der Fachgruppe Germanistik, der GHG, der Jusos-HG und Kreuz&Queer! ein attraktives und informatives Rahmenprogramm geschnürt. Auf dem gesamten Campus finden tolle Aktionen statt. Ab 20:15 Uhr schließlich zeigen wir im StudiHaus den Film “Memory Books” – ein Film über Aids-Waisen in Afrika. Besucht unsere Info-Stände, schaut mit uns den Film, diskutiert mit und spendet!

Here is the Ku Klux Klan Protest at the University of Mississippi, pretty much in its entirety. There is plenty of great heckling throughout this video. My favorite is when a little girl says, “You are just standing there. Think of what you could be doing if you weren’t just standing there.”

The lead heckler who can be seen in the video leading the “Go to Hell, KKK” chant said at one point, “I hope a tornado destroys your trailer.” I did not get that on video though.

I am a grad student in Southern Studies at Ole Miss and I have never seen a Protest like this, except on television. I was struck by how toothless the KKK is. They are totally useless here except for being a great target for ridicule. Even the black students in attendance didn’t seem the least bit concerned and most of the people just seemed to look on as if it were a free carnival freak show.

The protest was supposed to be a silent demonstration, so it was strange to see the Klan get clearly aggitated by the taunts of the crowd and then to respond with what was clearly unrehearsed banter. At one point some one called them stupid and a guy in a red hood said, “not as stupid as you.” I thought maybe they would at least show more discipline than that. I guess not. Perhaps they thought they would get more support than they did, so they stayed there for only a few minutes.

Some students and faculty held an anti-hate counter rally that had more participants than the Klan did. The people of the school are concerned about the image this sends to the rest of the nation. But it is important to remember that none of this would be happening if there weren’t still a very strong racial sentiment at least among the alumni and undergrads that is promoted with coded language that refers to “Southern heritage” and “Tradition,” etc.

Kansas football coach Mark Mangino poked senior linebacker Arist Wright in the chest during a Friday practice the day before the game at Colorado triggering an athletic department investigation of Mangino.

One of those concerns came from Wright, a starting player who sources say told Perkins of his incident with Mangino.

OK, no wonder the Jayhawks are losing games. A starting linebacker, Arist Wright, tattled to the AD because his football coach poked him in the chest? Really? Are you serious? My four year old knows better than that. And now parents of former players want to jump on the bandwagon? They don’t have anything else better to do? How do they expect a coach to treat these guys? Football is a fast and violent game that requires physical and mental stamina. When the body is begging to stop, that it can’t go on any longer, the brain must insist that it continues. Mr. Rogers can’t keep that spark alive. (By the way, I love Mr. Rogers. He just wouldn’t have made a very good football coach.) How do these guys who have aspiraions for the NFL think they’ll be treated? I even witnessed Dick Vermiel scream down a player’s throat, and he’s considered a softy. Frankly, I’m embarrassed by the ridiculous behavior of Wright. Seriously.

This is my hell week.  Test Monday, a paper and quiz due Tuesday, my independent Astronomy Project and my final project for Sport and Media due Thursday.  I get the impression my teachers are unaware there is any class after this week.  Unfortunately, there is another 3 weeks after this one.

I cannot begin to explain how much I want this semester to be over.  While I am ready for a break, I really want Tim to be done with this semester even more than me.  He is so stressed and busy and I hardly talk to him.  I know it is only a few more weeks and things will settle down but that does not make dealing with his school load any easier.  I am trying to be supportive but my feelings have been hurt a lot.  I think it hurts the most cause it is nothing he is doing or purpose or can even control.  It is just so frustrating that I finally found this person that is so great for me and he has to be so far away.   Oh well, just more motivation for me to graduate.

Oh and Nebraska beat KU, just like I told everyone they would.

Ku is an artist I’ve regarded as cute for a long time, and I’ve been following them on pixiv for that reason.  But relatively recently Ku came up with a new original character, Sorashiro Chiise (空城チイセ).  Chiise is absolutely adorable.

She appears to be a unicorn crossed with an angel, not to mention she’s a loli, and she has yet to be depicted in a non-cute form.  Shy and sad Chiise is a heartwrenching Chiise.

Chiise is often depicted with Kannagi Hinura, a red haired young man drawn initially by Tatsumi Warabe.  I do not like Tatsumi’s style as much as I do Ku’s.  But the characters are pretty cute together.

I really don’t have a lot of complaint about Chiise’s character design.  I love devils a lot, but an angel is nice too sometimes.  Not to mention how nice it would be to get this for my birthday.

All I can really say is, good job, Ku, and keep drawing.

I had the honor to be invited to deliver another lecture at to the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication of The University of Kansas. Many thanks to Dr Mugur Geana for inviting me.

This time however was to address a group of master’s students enrolled in a research methods class. My task was to show some applications and tools freely available online that could be potentially used in an academic research setting. I concentrated on Google, Twitter and Facebook. After giving a short review of each tool or application, I gave an example from my own experience of using them for academic research purposes and highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of using them.

I think it is highly important that current students, especially those in communication schools, are at least made aware of these platforms. I also believe that they should be encouraged to experiment with social media. While academic journals might maintain their reluctancy to publish papers using experimental and exploratory tools and methods, students should nonetheless aim to familiarize themselves with them as a way to preparing themselves for their future careers. Furthermore, with pressures on both academia and professional environments to become more profitable or reduce spending, being aware of the tools and applications that can enhance work, increase efficiency or provide data in a quick and easy manner people aware of these free options could be in a position of advantage. Finally, research and academia alike are, in my opinion, about exploration and experimentation so if they are not going to use these tool, who will?

The lecture took place online and was delivered via Skype. Unfortunately TokBox didn’t perform as expected so students were given handouts of my presentation to consult and make notes on while my powerpoint and I were being projected on a bigger screen.

Hallo ihr lieben Leute,

Erstmal: Entschuldigung. Ich weiß es ist Dienstag. Aber ich hatte am Sonntag wirklich keine Zeit, und ich wollte euch aber auch nicht vorenthalten, was wir am Sonntag gemacht haben. Und dann hatte ich heute zwei Klassenarbeiten für die ich lernen musste.

Jedenfalls waren wir Sonntag in Lawrence bei Emily und Cooper, weil Emily morgen Geburtstag hat. In Deutschland sagt man ja (glaub ich?), dass es Unglück bringt, seinen Geburtstag vorzufeiern, aber in den USA sieht man das wohl nicht so. Wir haben uns dann noch die University of Kansas angeguckt (KU, ihr erinnert euch…). Der Campus ist erstmal riiiiiiieeesig und das Hauptgebäude liegt auf nem Hügel und ist auch gleich das erste was man sieht, wenn man nach Lawrence reinfährt . Da zu studieren hätte schon was. Dann haben wir in ner lustigen Pizzeria zu Abend gegessen und waren natürlich bei Starbucks.

(Don und Gayla sind echte Kaffee-Fanatiker. Hier wird nur Starbucks-Kaffee getrunken, mit ganzen Bohnen die erst noch geschräddert werden müssen, und dann in die Edelstahlkaffeemaschine kommen. Neulich hat Don ausgerechnet, dass sie im Jahr um die 600$ für Starbucksbohnen ausgeben. Und hat dann für ne Millisekunde überlegt, das Kaffeetrinken aufzugeben. Aber auch nur für ne Millisekunde. )

Und , Omi, glaub es oder glaub es nicht, in Lawrence gibt es tatsächlich Postkarten zu kaufen.

Unsere Mississippi-Nachbarn sind mit Halloween jetzt durch. Dafür steht jetzt ein Truthahn, ein Indianer, und (6 Wochen vor Weihnachten) ein Schneemann und Santa Claus, alles aufblasbar. Gayla hat auch schon umdekoriert; überall stehen jetzt kleine Indianer und Pilgrims mit Maiskolben.

Nächste Woche geht’s mit Basketball los. Morgen ist schon ne erste Besprechung. Ich war schon die letzen Tage immer mit Gayla laufen, damit ich nicht als kompletter Verlierer dastehe Montag. Werde ich aber wahrscheinlich trotzdem.

Heute war ich nach der Schule mit Becky bei Sonic, Raspberry Limenade trinken und dann “cruisen”. Das war wohl der “american way”: Statt zu Fuß zu Mc’s oder mit dem Fahrrad zur Eisdiele geht’s mit dem Auto zu Sonic. Autofahren mit 16 ist schon ne feine Sache.

Für unser Footballteam ist die Saison jetzt auch endlich vorbei. Am Dienstag haben wir noch Sedgwick geschlagen, aber dann am Samstag in der nächsten Runde gegen Collegiate sowas von verloren. 48:0. Good job, guys. Aber Collegiate ist auch ne Privatschule, und die verteilen Stipendien um gute Sportler an ihre Schule zu kriegen. Irgendwo ja auch unfair, oder?

Samstag hab ich ne Mail von meiner Coordinatorin bekommen. Die haben wohl zwei Leute nach Hause geschickt letzten Monat. Einmal Patricia aus Holland, aus “persönlichen Gründen”, was schade ist, die war echt nett. Und dann so eine dumme Nuss aus Deutschland, weil sie Pot geraucht hat. Weißte Bescheid?

Sooo das wärs auch erstmal wieder.

Nächste Woche wird sich mein Artikel wahrscheinlich auch verspäten, ich bin von Freitag Abend bis Sonntag zur SDYC. (Southern District Youth Conference) Da kommen die Jugendgruppen von allen Mennonitischen Kirchen in Kansas, Oklahoma und ich glaube Colorado zusammen und machen dies und jenes. Jedenfalls fährt da die ganze Kirchengruppe und ansich die ganze Schule hin. Und ich hab gedacht, ich komm vielleicht mal in nen anderen Staat, aber diese Jahr ist die Conference in Newton, also ne halbe Stunde von hier.

Kuene
Kuene våre er raggete og hardføre, og trives godt ute hele året rundt. Egentlig tenkte vi å ha dem på Rødkilen hele året, men har ikke funnet noen løsning på hvordan vi skulle få vannet dem vintern gjennom, så nå har vi bestemt oss for å flytte dem hjem til eplehagen. Der har vi frostsikker vanning til sauene, og med litt tilpasning kan vi få til en ku-løsning ved siden av, hvor de også kan gå under tak når de vil det.

Den store utfordringene er jo å få de hjem hit, men vi har flyttet såpass mye på dem mellom beitene at vi tenker at vi kan få dem til å følge oss, om en går foran med noe godt, og en går bak og driver. I dag gikk vi en prøvetur, og det gikk kjempebra! Så lenge Fru Enogfemti går, kommer de andre etter, og så lenge hun får noe godt så får vi henne til å gå. Det var ordentlig koselig å gå med dem i dag, og nå gleder vi oss til å gå kuene hjem for vinteren!

Atléticos contra madridistas, indios contra vikingos, el Kun contra el Pipita, Quique contra Pellegrini y mucho más. No es un partido cualquiera ya que, en contra de lo que nos pueda vender la prensa, para la mayoría de los hinchas del Madrid este es el verdadero clásico. Un derbi que se gane o se pierde, el siguiente lunes tiene un sabor especial.

Con realidades, y presupuestos, diametralmente opuestas, el Atlético llega luego de ser eliminado de la Champions League pero con un juego que ilusiona. El Kun va a poder ser de la partida y será junto con Forlán la punta de lanza para quebrar la defensa merengue. El Madrid por su parte llega de empatar con el Milan, con un gran primer tiempo pero una segunda etapa que podría considerarse más de lo mismo. Pellegrini, a cada partido que se juegue, defiende un match ball. Nada nuevo en el Real Madrid.

Como contamos, el Kun saldrá entre los titulares, mientras que Raúl parece que come banco de nuevo.

Las estadística indican una clara superioridad blanca con 77 victorias sobre 35 del Aleti.

I dag fikk jeg vite hvordan melka kommer oppi melkekartongen, av en gutt på 3 år i bhg. Vi satt i lavoen og spiste, vi var 5 barn og meg. Så lurte jeg på om de viste hvordan melka kom oppi melkekartogen, og ja, det viste han ene. Som han sa:

“Vi får melk fra kua, den går til butikken og putter puppen oppi melkekartongen og sputrer melka nedi der. Så får vi melk.”

Det var en veldig morsom beskrivelse av hvordan melka kommer oppi kartongene. Jeg lo godt inni meg da han fortalte det, han lo litt selv også når han sa det. Og alle de andre var også helt ening i det han sa. Så da vet vi det!
