Why does Windows Vista make pretty much everything in the C drive read-only?

Protection from rogue programs is my best guess, which seems fair enough, but I never had a problem with XP which only has the very most important files read-only.  If that was the only problem though, that would be fine.  But Vista for some reason doesn’t give the user (even members of the ~/Admin group) access to anything important on the C drive, or the ability to turn off the read-only attribute.

The specific annoyance was a problem with the LG PCSuite which you can use to transfer data from your LG phone.  For some reason LG PCSuite doesn’t work with the LG Viewty KU990 so you have to edit a .ini file to make the program think you’re using a U990 instead.  Which on XP took all of about 5 seconds.  In Vista I spent about half-an-hour trying to take the read-only off, working systematically up from the LG folder to the whole of C:\Program Files.  Then I checked the Attributes tab again, and the tick was back; on its own.

In the end I had to create a copy of the .ini file on the desktop before editing and moving it myself.

Just yesterday again I was trying to install the new 3.0 version of the J2ME JDK.

“Ahhhhh.  No, you can’t do that.  I’m not letting you put anything in C:\Program Files, it’s READ-ONLY, why don’t you put it in the D drive instead, that’s not read-only.”

Again, only a little thing, but I want it with my other JDK, not on its own.

It seems odd to me that Vista doesn’t let you edit files on your own computer.  That’s okay if you know nothing about computers, to stop you from messing it up, but I think Vista may have lost a fair few of its advanced users to Linux distributions.  Nowhere else does a tool ask you for permission to do what you want it to do:

Saw:  Are you sure you want me to cut this piece of wood? Positive?  Absolutely certain?

Soldering Iron:  Ooo be careful, this bit gets hot.  Are you sure you want to put that solder there?  But it might stick.  Are you sure you want that to happen?

That would be annoying; which is why it doesn’t happen.  Why does Vista do it?

Update: Seeing as this post gets more hits than all the rest put together, I guess some people must be having the same problems as I was.  So I’ll give you some advice which I’ve found has worked.

It’s not the most tidy, or elegant solution; but if you put any files you’re likely to want to edit, or have unrestricted access to in your user directory, then Vista seems willing to let you do that.  So far I haven’t had any problems with that, but there may be exceptions I guess.

De LG KU990 – ook wel LG Viewty genoemd – is een echte camera-telefoon. De Viewty maakt foto’s tot 5 megapixels en kunnen dus in een goede kwaliteit op fotopapier worden afgedrukt. LG mengeluarkan Viewty dengan warna2 baru, sama sekali tidak ada perbedaan dengan Viewty sebelumnya, cuma berbeda rasa warna, dan yang baru ini terdapat lens cover saja…

Sejak 2 minggu yang lalu gw nyari2 HP untuk menggantikan Sony P1i, fokus utama gw adalah HP dengan kamera minimal 5 Megapixel, autofocus…dan kandidat buat gw adalah Nokia N82, Sony Ericsson K850 (gue pernah punya nih), LG KU990 Viewty, dan Samsung G600…setelah dipikir2 akhirnya gw mutusin untuk beli LG KU990 Viewty aja.

Sebenernya Viewty yang saya beli ini versi baru, karena sudah tersedia dalam warna silver dan black (saya ambil warna black), tetapi perbedaan utama dengan versi pertama adalah kali ini terdapat lens cover di kameranya, seperti pada Nokia N82. LG Viewty ini bentuknya elegan, ringan, dan mempunyai dimensi kira2 hampir sama dengan HTC Touch Diamond dan iPhone. Suara speakernya sangat nyaring dan jernih (mungkin pengaruh casing metal di sisi belakangnya), sudah gw bandingkan dengan Sony Ericsson W660 istri. Untuk layar, Viewty mempunyai resolusi 240×400 dengan ukuran 3 inci, sangat enak untuk menonton video.

Viewty mempunyai Operating System yang hampir sama dengan LG Prada, menggunakan sentuhan di layar untuk navigasinya, mirip2 seperti iPhone lah, walaupun belum menggunakan multi touch.

Dengan kemampuan kamera yang hampir sama dengan Sony Ericsson, Viewty mempunyai kemampuan video recording di atas Sony Ericsson k850i, Viewty mampu merekam video 640×480 @30fps, bahkan mampu merekam @120fps jika resolusi diturunkan menjadi 320×420. Dan kamera Viewty juga dilengkapi dengan image stabilizer.

Untuk konektivitas, Viewty terdapat Bluetooth dan HSDPA 3,6 mbps, jadi video call dan koneksi internet masih memungkinkan pada Viewty. (asik, bisa jadi modem untuk EEEPC 1000H)

در رقابت با گوشی iPhone شرکت Apple ، شرکت LG مدل جدیدی را به نام KU990 معرفی کرد که از نظر مشخصات سخت افزاری و امکانات از گوشی iPhone نیز قوی تر است. این گوشی که از نظر طراحی کاملا شبیه iPhone ساخته شده دارای دوربین 5.1 مگاپیکسلی با حساسیت ISO800 است. فلاش را هم که در عکس میبینید. KU990 دارای دوربین ویدئویی 120 فریم در ثانیه است. از تکنولوژی 3G HSDPA پشتیبانی میکند و دارای حافظه داخلی 170 مگابایتی است. نمایشگر این گوشی 3  اینچی و 240 در 400 پیکسل است و مانند iPhone لمسی است. این گوشی دارای سیستم پخش موسیقی نیز هست. هنوز قیمت این گوشی اعلام نشده. اما اعلام شده که در پاییز در اروپا ارائه خواهد شد و تا اول سال آینده میلادی در دیگر نقاط نیز به فروش خواهد رسید.

It also includes the Google package: Google Search, e-Blogger, Gmail™ and Google Maps™ for mobile handsets. Based on GSM technology, it comes with 100MB internal memory, 2Gb microSD card slot, and has 240X400 touch screen with handwriting recognition. But, boy, what a camera it is. It comes with largest resolution in camera-phone so far, 5Mpxl, with both auto and manual focus capabilities, 4 ISO settings 100, 200, 400 & 800, image stabilization, and high-speed video recording with 120 frames per second. I can’t wait to get my hands on this puppy! Sadly, no word on whether it will be released in US yet.

haven’t really played around with it yet. compared to the PRADA phone, this is more useful. their touch screen sensitivity andaccuracy has been much better with a lot more improvement. way better than some of those ATM machines. it might be easier to be comparing with the iPhone. but since i dont have it, i’m not gonna compare the two without not knowing the other. but at far as using the VIEWTY, its great. its lighter then the PRADA phone. a bit thicker because of the 5 mega pixel camera (or maybe not). here are some pics that i took with the VIEWTY.

まだそんなにイジくり回してないです。でもPRADA携帯と比べると断然こっちのVIEWTYの方が性能は◎。タッチスクリーンの操作性とか感度、精密度も問題無い感じッス。そこら辺のATMの機会のタッチスクリーンよりも性能は良いね。iPhoneと比べるともっとわかりやすいんだろぅけど、持って無いし、まったく知らないから比べません。だからPRADA携帯と比べます。PRADAのと比べると重量的には結構軽いです。ただ気持ち厚みがありますね。これが５メガのカメラのせいなのかはわからないですけど。下の写真はVIEWTYで適当に撮ったモノです。

not bad for a camera phone yea? auto focusing/manual focusing, ISO level up to 800, white balance of course, contrast, color tone, self timer, blah blah blah. also with their photo editing thingy as part of the VIEWTY’s firmware, becomes really handy. as you can see my car on the third picture, i changed the contrast level of the saved picture and added a stamp of heart. well, the heart looks a bit rough when moved to an computer… but as far as within the screen of the VIEWTY, its clear. also with the included stylus, you can write on the picture. havent really tried the video yet. i did, but havent uploaded yet. and i dont think i will.. lol the video can record up to 120 frames per second. it was fun recording my friend smoking a cigarette trying to make the “O” shape.

携帯のカメラにしては充分じゃない？自動／マニュアルフォーカス機構、ＩＳＯ感度８００まで対応、ホワイトバランスはもちろんだし、カラートーンやらセルフタイマー、その他色々。ＶＩＥＷＴＹのファームウェアに入ってる簡易フォトショップみたいなのがあるんだけど、これが以外と重宝するやも知れません。３枚目のマイカーの写真ですが、その携帯内のソフトでコントラストレベルを変えて、ハートのスタンプを追加しました。まぁ、スタンプの画質は悪いですけど…笑。ＰＣ上に出力するとやはり荒が目立つ部分もありますね。でもＶＩＥＷＴＹの画面上で見る分には問題ありませんね。そして付属のスタイラスで写真に落書きやら出来ます。動画はそんなに試してはいないんですが、１２０ＦＰＳの実力は半端無いっすね。友達がタバコの煙で「Ｏ」を作ろうとしてたんだけど、なかなか面白かったっすネ。

最近ブルートゥースも買った。

i bought the Jaw Bone. i was asking around my friends that works at the cell phone shop and they told me that at this time, Jaw Bone is probably the most clearest one around. so i trsuted my friend and bought the Jaw Bone blue tooth. outcome is good. kind a hate the ear bands though… oh well. for sound clearity, its great. dont even know how to use that noise cancellation thingy though… lol hahha. well, i should be able to figure it out some how.

結局Ｊａｗ　Ｂｏｎｅを購入です。携帯屋で働いてる友人に聞きまわったところ、これが今一番キレイに聞こえるだろうって言われたのでゲットです。結果は…良好です。この耳バンドがちょっと嫌いですが…まぁしょうがない。ただ問題は、ノイズ・キャンセレーションの使い方が今一判りません（笑。まぁ、そのウチ使えるようになるッショ。

Недавно совершил покупку, купил себе новый телефончик. На этот раз это LG Viewty. Сразу столкнулся с проблемой: в Интернете к нему нету ни тем, ни background’ов. Все из-за нестандартного разрешения экрана.

the Viewty, mainly focusing on as a digital camera. still debating with myself should i get it or not… some people over at Art Center were using the device for their art projects. but a cellphone camera can be that professional? as reading the specs, seems better than a regular cell phone camera. 5.0 mega pixel with a lot of settings from white balance to iso and manual focusing with video editing. but hey, how about the Viewty as a regular cell phone? i use to have the PRADA phone for a while. similar model to the Viewty but with less feature. as a cell phone itself, PRADA phone did not make me erect at all. their touch screen was not cooperative as i thought. i tried pressing 2 and 5 comes up. had a hard time texting hello.. couldnt be like the iPhone. well, it came before the iPhone did so yea i will give props fo the technology. but as a user, thumbs down. the cellphone it self looks high class though. slim black body and comes with the leather case with PRADA logo engraved. here are some pics i took before.

ＬＧのＶｉｅｗｔｙはカメラ携帯と呼ぶに相応しい感じですね。ただ、買おうかどぅか悩んでしまう…Ａｒｔ　Ｃｅｎｔｅｒの生徒で何人かこのＶｉｅｗｔｙで課題の写真と撮っているそぅで。携帯のカメラでそこまで出来るの？って思ったけど、スペック見て結構納得です。５メガピクセルでホワイトバランスやらＩＳＯまで設定出来るときてマニュアルフォーカス可能。更にビデオ編集も出来る。でも携帯としての機能はどうだろう？前にＰＲＡＤＡ携帯持ってたけど、モデル的にＶｉｅｗｔｙのご先祖様だね。まぁカメラは２メガで機能もＶｉｅｗｔｙより少ないけど。このＰＲＡＤＡ携帯、確実に萎える。タッチスクリーンがめちゃめちゃ使いにくい。２押したら５出てくる。Ｈｅｌｌｏってテキストで打つのも大変。iＰｈｏｎｅみたいにはいかないね。でもまぁ、iＰｈｏｎｅより先にフルタッチで出したってとこは賞賛に値するよね（偉そうにｗ）。でもやっぱ一人のユーザーとしては却下。見た目はお洒落だけどね。持ってたらモテそうな感じ。黒基調のスリムボデーでＰＲＡＤＡの刻印入りのレザーケース付き。前撮った写真があるから見てみて。

Since this is my inaugural technology review here in the Lair, I feel that I should keep things brief; as such, I shall sum up this phone in one (possibly fragmented) sentence:

You little Viewty!

Ok, now that I have that out of the way, this phone shall never again be referred to by this absolutely abysmal name; I mean really LG, the Viewty (whoops)? What were you guys smoking when they came up with that little doozey? Maybe they’ve decided that stupid names are the best way to get ahead these days; look at the success story that is Nintendo’s Wii.

All of that aside, let’s take a look at what the LG KU990 (remember, not the Viewty) has to offer as both a phone and as a rather sexy piece of tech.

The first thing you notice upon picking up the KU990 is the absolutely gigantic screen; at a whopping three inches (my partner tells me that three inches is a whopper pretty much every day), this bad boy stands out in a way that most phones can only dream of; my beloved Sony Ericssons look positively primitive in comparison.

The next thing you notice is just how slick the whole thing is.  The phone is gorgeous and amazingly swanky, and the touch screen interface gives the whole thing a pleasingly futuristic vibe.  Even more impressive is the fact that the KU990 touch screen, unlike most of its Samsung or Sony Ericsson counterparts, is incredibly accurate and easy to use; the buttons on screen are all large, and the pinpoint vibration when you tap the screen gives a pleasingly tactile feeling to your interactions with the phone.

The flash-based menu system is laid out quite nicely, and is attractive to look at.  All the usual features like a calendar, alarm, convertor, etc. are here and perfectly functional, and really it has everything you would expect a modern phone to have.  MP3 and other music file types are supported, and the music player is easy to use and has a built-in visualiser.

In a move sure to please anyone that downloads completely legal television series’ from the internet, the KU990 features DivX support, and comes bundled with conversion software if necessary.  Music support does not require the installation of any software at all, and can merely be dragged and dropped over to the phone in a move sure to please anyone that has ever had to use that horrible Samsung music transfer software.

The camera is one of the main features of the phone, and while I have only the most passing interest in digital photography, I was nonetheless impressed by the standard that LG have managed to pack into the KU990; 5.1 megapixels, a Schneider Kreuznach lens (I’m informed that this is a very good thing; when I first heard the name I thought it was one of the bosses from Wolfenstein 3D), Xenon flash, auto and manual focus, and an image stabilizer; it also acts as a video camera with up to 120 fps, and is more than capable of doing some funky slow motion shots should the need ever arise.

One absolute pleasure with the KU990 is document or internet browsing; the interface is a thing of beauty, presenting the full page from a zoomed out perspective that can be switched to widescreen if required.  Scroll around, find what you want, and tap to zoom in; in this way you can navigate mobile unfriendly pages with ease, something severely lacking even in some high-end PDA style phones.  The fact that the phone has built in Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and PDF support also means that EBooks or getting work done on the go is entirely possible, and the huge screen makes it all that much sweeter.

While this phone is probably the best touch screen phone that I have used to date, and certainly is one of my favourite phones that I’ve ever owned period, it is not without its flaws.  The first, albeit minor problem is the fact that the stylus is stored externally, folding up and hanging from the top of the phone; this gives it the advantage of being large and robust, but at the expense of looking…well, just a little bit stupid.  Having an ultra-sleek phone with a dangly bit ala a 13 year old girl’s Hello Kitty-themed Nokia is just a tad silly, and takes away from the aesthetic awesomeness.

The next, more serious problem is the occasional lack of logic in the interface itself.  Sure, 99% of the time everything works as it should, but occasionally you’ll think, “why are all the necessary buttons on screen when typing a message, but the delete button is a hard button on the phone itself?” or, “why do I need to use a jog wheel on the back of the phone to scroll through menus when I’m not using the stylus?”

These little inconsistencies stand out because the majority of the interface is a thing of beauty, but this fact just makes them all the more annoying.  It also must be realised that while the phone is entirely usable with a finger in most cases, some things (such as using the QWERTY keyboard for messaging or easily scrolling through web pages) will just require you to use the stylus, lest you start tearing out hair in frustration; better not lose the dangly little thing then!

The fact that the phone supposedly only supports a 2GB MicroSD is quite disappointing, but apparently there are ways to get it to recognise up to 8GB cards; I haven’t really seen the need for this for myself, but the option is there with some research.  Battery life is another little niggle; I’ve found it to last about half the time of my old w810i, less if I play games.  Gaming is actually another good point to raise here; generally speaking you will need to find and download games that have been adapted specifically to the KU990, which is easy enough to do with a bit of Googling; just realise that some games aren’t going to work very well on this phone. 

All in all the LG (definitely not a Viewty) KU990 is a beautiful phone in every sense of the word; sleek, elegant, and downright sexy, but with just enough in the way of flaws that the beauty feels natural (well, as natural as comparing a lump of plastic to a metaphorical woman can be).  Sure the interface might be fiddly at times, or the battery life might not be as long as you’re used to, but the fact is that this is still by far the best touch screen phone to be released so far, and is certainly up there when compared to any upmarket mobile currently released.

Plus it does everything the iPhone does, only better and for a cheaper price; in your face Apple!

I rate the LG KU990: 9/10 (A beautiful phone that is as stunning to use as it is in appearance; with a few minor niggles cleared up in time for the next iteration, LG could have a phone that puts all the competitors to shame.  As it is, they came pretty close.  I heartily recommend this phone, and not just because I’ve already shelled out for it!)
