It is the holiday season!! A time of joy, family, and FOOD. Yet, we all know how stressful it can

It is the holiday season!! A time of joy, family, and FOOD. Yet, we all know how stressful it can be in the kitchen before the party starts. What is the menu going to consist of? Do I have time to cook for these people? How many dishes did I decide to make…?!!! Now a days the modern cook does not have a lot of time to spend slaving over a hot stove, and why should we!!

I am going to share two kugel recipes that are so simple and quick you will not only have time to relax, but you will wow your guests with their taste. What is a kugel you ask? It is like a hard pudding/ cake like side dish. Such a dish is found in most Jewish households on the holidays.

The two kugels I will be sharing with you are a broccoli kugel and a sweet pumpkin Kugel, which is great for Thanksgiving.

Broccoli Kugel:

Broccoli kugel is quite popular and delicious. My kugel recipe has a great twist that will get your tastebuds popping… What is the twist you ask…. Broccoli coleslaw.

Ingredients:

1 package of broccoli coleslaw(shredded broccoli, shredded cabbage, shredded carrot)

1 white onion

4 eggs ( the fake eggs works well too)

3/4 cup mayo

1/4 cup flour

salt and pepper

1 tbsp garlic powder

Boil the broccoli until tender.

In a in blender or food processor add all the other ingredients and blend until smooth.

After the broccoli is done, strain and run under cold water to cool. Once strained and cooled put in the food processor.

When everything mixed together pour in greased baking pan and cook 30 minutes on 350.

Slice into cubes and serve.

Now we move on to the Pumpkin kugel. It is a sweet kugel, which compliments meats and other savory dishes. A real party pleaser. I love making it for Thanksgiving, hanukkah. It is great on a cold winter day.

Ingredients:

28 OZ CAN OF PUMPKIN.
1 AND 3\4 STICKS MARGARINE
1 AND 3\4 CUPS SUGAR
1 AND 3\4 CUPS FLOUR
1\2 CUP MOCHA MIX OR LOW FAT SOY MILK
5 EGGS

MELT MARGARINE SLIGHTLY IN MICROWAVE OR OVER STOVE.
MIX ALL INGREDIENTS WITH MIXER OR BY HAND
POUR INTO 2 PIE PANS OR A LONG BAKING PAN
>SPRINKLE CINNAMON ON TOP
BAKE FOR 350 FOR 45 MINUTES OR LONGER TO FORM CRUST.

I HOPE YOU TRY OUT THESE RECIPES

I dropped my wife and kids off at the airport tonight. They are now on a plane to Dallas, to spend Thanksgiving with my in-laws. It is the first Thanksgiving we’ll be apart.

Tomorrow night, my niece Char (Harlan’s daughter) arrives from LA. Her mother, Gail, is already in Phoenix, visiting a friend. The three of us will be heading up the hill to Flagstaff with my other niece, Tess (Cece’s daughter). Thanksgiving at Cece’s house in Flagstaff has been our tradition, but this year is different. This year, there is no Cece.

For me, Cece and Thanksgiving are permanently bound together. The only time I recall missing Thanksgiving with Cece and her family was the year her husband Steve passed. Cece, like my mother, was an excellent cook, and she always prepared a couple of my mother’s staple recipes for the occasion: carrot ring and kugel. My contribution to the meal was usually limited to a pumpkin pie or pumpkin cheesecake, expertly prepared by the bakers at Costco.

Holidays for me inevitably contain a moment of profound sadness, when I am surrounded by family, but get present to those who have passed. This year, I am emotional in anticipation, resisting the inevitable sadness, and yet curious as to how it will be this year and for years to come. A fine tradition has ended. What will be born from its ashes?

My Grandmother Agnes (my Mom’s mother) was a gentle Lithuanian woman who possessed an enormous heart

My Grandmother Agnes (my Mom’s mother) was a gentle Lithuanian woman who possessed an enormous heart in addition to being beautiful and intelligent. If she had been born in a later generation she would no doubt have become a successful profession since she possessed an abundance of brains and charisma.

Being born just after World War I her life path was set to be a loving mother and homemaker. Although she worked during World War II in a factory, while my Grandfather was serving his country, she was forced back into her traditional matriarchal role after the boys returned home from Europe.

Shortly after World War II she gave birth to my Mother and a few years later to my Mom’s brother Bill. It wasn’t until my Mom was in High School when my Grandmother completed her quartet of children with another boy (Ron) and girl (Karen).

Her devotion as a mother was never more evident than when she was blessed with a handful of Grandchildren. I like to think, looking back on it, that I was her favorite since she used to babysit me many days after pre-school or kindergarten.

Unfortunately my memories of her remain a blur as she passed away about twenty years ago from emphysema around the time I was five. Over the years I have pieced together vague memories, along with stories my Mom and others have told me, to form a clearer picture of what she was like in my head.

Although this image is largely constructed from other people’s memories I can still remember going over to her house with my Mom and playing war (the card game) for long periods of time when she was confined to her bed due to declining health.

Other than that recollection of the two of us playing cards, the only other memory that I have of her that I feel a sense of ownership of is eating her food. I can remember her making cottage cheese pancakes, potato kugel, crepes and blintzes, and how I used to sit at her kitchen table stuffing my face, loving each bite of these old world culinary delights.

The hardest part of this reminiscence for me is that I can’t replicate the tastes and smells that used to emanate from her kitchen. My Mom and I have made cottage cheese pancakes and crepes that have tasted great, but in my heart I knew they just weren’t the same as when she used to prepare them.

Last night I was strolling down the freezer isle of the Sweetbay Supermarket that is located just down the street from my house at the corner of Winkler and Gladiolous when a bright yellow box caught my eye. When I opened the freezer door to get a clearer look at the description of this product I realized that the slim box contained six cheese blintzes.

Since I can’t remember the last time I had cheese blintzes I excitedly snatched a box off the shelf and had no problem forking over the $2.99 required to purchase this specialty item. After consulting my Mom for instructions on the proper way to cook them, and frying them up in a little butter and oil I was ready to dive into my first bite of blintz bliss.

With that initial mouthful I was transported back to my childhood and thoughts of my Grandmother’s cooking. Unfortunately these memories only left me feeling sad that although these blintzes tasted good, they weren’t my Grandmother’s.

In the end the most tragic part of this experience for me wasn’t that I missed my Grandmother, since I still feel her presence in my life, it was the fact that she passed away before I was old enough to truly get to know her. Therefore, it breaks my heart that I knew her for such a short period of time that I can’t remember how her blintzes tasted, only how they don’t.

This past Friday, Jewish Blog readers were urged to protest a visit to a modern orthodox synagogue b

This past Friday, Jewish Blog readers were urged to protest a visit to a modern orthodox synagogue by one of the most exteme Israeli Hassidic Rebbes. Congregation Shaaray Tefila in Lawrence, NY was going to host the Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok Rebbe, Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Kohn that very Shabbat. This is off the beaten path for the Rebbe, but the beaten path is threadbare and the pantries are empty.

This raised a firestorm in the blogossphere which was well captured by the postings and comments in DovBear, Emes Ve-Emunah, Failed Messiah, Honestly Frum and others. This morning I read an article in The Jewish Star, a Long Island Jewish newspaper which prompted me to express my reactions which I submitted to their comments sections and posted here (with some slight edits).

$$$$

For a long time money has flowed from the modern orthodox to chareidim (ultra-orthodox Jews). At the same time, influence has flowed in the opposite direction. This grates on the nerves of some in the modern orthodox world who feel that chareidim treat them with contempt. That is the main issue in the Five Towns controversy about Shaaray Tefila’s sponsorship of a visit by the Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok Rebbe, Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Kohn. Some have complained that fundrasing by this visitor will drain away money away from local needs. However, that is not the real issue. The ssame passions are not stirred by fundraising for Bar-Ilan University.

The Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok hassidim present an extreme case of the asymetrical relationship. On the one hand, these hassidim and a group led by Rabbi Cohen’s brother, (Toldos Aharon), harbored a mother who was starving her child. The Israeli social service sector detected the problem, and brought the child to Hadassah Hospital where he was being nursed back to health. The mother returned to the hospital and yanked out a feeding tube and this was captured on video. Whatever her motives and mental status, she is clearly unfit as a mother.

Any responsible system must intervene when a mother is damaging her child’s health. Instead several Israeli chareidi groups became very hostile towards Israeli Social Services and Hadassah Hospital. As is their wont, they threw out the epithet Nazi. They seemed to imply that Hadassah was a dangerous place. Naturally, when their leaders need the best of medical care they continue to go to Hadassah, not Sharay Tzedek, a hospital under orthodox auspices. In effect they take the service but assert religious and moral superiority while denigrationg their service providers. Perhaps their greatest sin is their complete violation of the obligation of hakaros hatov, acknowledging and repaying kindness. At a minimum, Shaaray Tefila ought to expect hakaros hatov from its guests. The should be thanking Hadassah for saving a child’s life and thanking Shaaray Tefila’s congregants who contribute to Hadassah.

Rabbi Weinberg offers up a very dubious defense when he says,

It’s true . . . that some of his (Rabbi Kohn’s) followers violently protested the arrest of an allegedly abusive mother, and the opening of a parking lot in Jerusalem on Shabbos, but, I don’t think he has the ability to stop (the protests). . . . . . .He’s a very peaceful person and he has tremendous ahavas yisroel (love for the Jewish people). . . . . . During Rabbi Kohn’s visit, four IDF (Israel Defense Force) soldiers were also scheduled to speak . . . (and I asked about bringing them to the Rebbe’s gathering). . . . . . The response I got was, ‘bring them, the Rebbe would be very happy and would greet them.”

Wow! “We’ll take your money and even be polite to your guests!” More disturbing, is the disengenuous claim that Rabbi Kohn does not control his followers. Hassidic Rebbes are well known for the sanctions they impose on disobedient chassidim. The sanctions include denying access to the Rebbe, attendance at the tisch, or even the right to pray in their beis medrish.

Consider the notorious kugel pelting episode at Slonim last year. The Slonim chassididm were angry at Ger for supporting a non-chareidi candidate for Mayor of Jerusalem. When Ger’s MP, Yaacov Litzman, went to the Slonim B’M for a simchah his streimel was yanked off and stomped, he was pushed around and he was pelted with kugel (potato, I believe). “Such things cannot be allowed in Israel,” to quote the Tanach. The Slonim Rebbe was not going to allow such abuse of a fellow Jew. He informed all the attackers ‘no access to my tisch until you apologize and beg Yaacov Litzman to forgive you.’ In spite of their sacredly motivated ire at Litzman, his hassidim all turned on a lira, rethought their kugel philosophy and did their apologies. So how can Rabbi Weinberg claim that Rabbi Kohn doe not have the control over his hassidim?” The Toldos chassidim all sign pledges to obey that are exceptional even by hassidic standards.

At some point Shaarei Tefila must decide how much they believe in darkei shalom (ways of peace) hakaros hatov (acknowledging and repaying kindness) pikuach nefesh (saving lives) and honoring those who defend Israel’s citizens. If they believe all those things and want their youngters to absorb those values, they have to stop undermining their credibility by hosting the Toldos Avrohom Yitchok Rebbe and others of his ilk.

Fresh from the oven

Kugel seems to come in two varieties. Boring noodle and boring potato. If there was ever a dish that cried out for a makeover like a Long Island mall rat it’s the kugel. My thinking about kugel started a few weeks ago when I made a nice veggie lasagna for a synagogue pot-luck. Its always heartening to see your dish empty after dinner, but I suspect any carb would have done well amongst the myriad tossed salads on offer. But I got to thinking, is there a Jewish equivalent for lasagna? I started rooting through my cookbooks and learned that there is a theory that Jews brought pasta to central Europe from Italy. That might be, but I think we should have stayed in Italy until we mastered cheese making. I found a lot of uses for ribbon egg noodles but there was nothing that called for the bigger sheets of pasta used in a lasagna.

When I read the many recipes available for kugel the recurring theme was that most kugels were still firmly anchored in the poverty of the past. Somehow in the trend of updating knishes with smoked salmon and coming up with even more extreme versions of the deli sandwich the kugel got left on the side of the road. I decided to change that armed with a version of baked mac & cheese from Gourmet that I had made for co-workers last year. A word of warning, this one is complicated and I had to write my steps down (unusual for me) to keep everything straight. My suggestion, read the instructions before you start the test.

Recipe after the break.

Noodle Kugel like your bubbe never made

Pasta Dough

2 cups flour

3 eggs

Roux

2 tb butter

2 tb flour

1/4 cup cream

1 cup beer

1/2 cup mushroom broth

1 bay leaf

salt and pepper

1 tb blue cheese

1 tsp chili flakes (optional)

Filling

4 thick slices of cauliflower

8-10 thick slices of tomato (beef steak or plum)

1 leek

1/2 cup dried shitake mushrooms

1/4 lb crimini mushrooms

3 oz whole milk cheese (any type)

Pasta: toss eggs in a mixer bowl, scramble. Add flour and mix until it comes together. Switch to a dough hook or knead by hand until it has a nice sheen to it. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic and set aside to rest at least one hour.

Then make the filling: place Shitakes in hot water to hydrate. Mince leeks into small slices (first cut off roots and leaves then slice in half lengthwise) saute over medium heat in olive oil or butter. After 3-4 min add sliced criminis and then shitakes (note, remove shitake stems as they are very tough). Reserve water from the shitakes and put them in a small sauce pan over medium heat until reduced to 1/2 cup. Once all the mushrooms have some color remove them from the pan and set aside. Add additional oil to the pan and then brown cauliflower slices (cut them off the head 1/2 inch thick) for about 90 seconds a side just to give them some color and add some nuttiness to the flavor. Set these aside as well.

Now start the roux: in a medium sauce pan place flour and butter, whisk together into a paste over medium low heat. After 5 min slowly add the beer, cream and mushroom broth whisking constantly until it is smooth. Add the salt, pepper, blue cheese and bay leaf turn off the heat and let sit.

After resting the dough divide into four balls and roll out on a floured surface as thin as possible so each sheet is at least as big as an 8×8 in pan.

Assembly: In an 8×8 pan place a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of the pan. Place one layer of pasta on it. Then arrange the cauliflower in a single layer over that with slices of cheese on top. Another later of pasta, followed by a layer of sauce. Now layer in the mushroom/leek mixture, use about half. Another sheet of pasta, sauce and mushroom/leek and put a layer of tomato slices on that. Now, the final sheet of pasta. Use the last of the sauce and then arrange the rest of the slices of tomato on top. Garnish with grated hard cheese if you like.

Bake at 350 for 30 min covered in foil. Remove foil and bake another 10 min until the cheese on top browns. Let rest at least 10 min before serving.

Growing up frum, sooner or later we were caught doing something wrong an we were asked, how could yo

Growing up frum, sooner or later we were caught doing something wrong an we were asked, how could you? We knew not to answer because we understood this was a rhetorical device. They asserted our guilt and we accepted it and experienced shame. The point of the lesson was to remind us that that some things just aren’t done!

So now I hear that Yaacov Litzman, the acting health minister, is leaning on government mental health workers to change their reports about frum molesters they believe will do it again so they can get out of their prisons. This same Litzman is also an important reason Abraham Mondrowitz has not been extradited back to the US for raping many boys .

My first reaction was to want to get in his face and say “how could you”? “How dare you”? However, I doubt that would make any difference. He is shameless. He has the approval of the Gerer Rebbe , the leader of one of the largest hassidic groups in the world. Litzman is in the Israeli Knesset and heads the health ministry because of Ger backing. His protection of Mondrowitz has gone on for over two years during which many additional revelations have appeared including the fact that Mondrowitz repeatedly raped boys in the basement of the Ger Yeshiva in Brooklyn.

There are certain things that we think of as Jewish values, because we all share the same language. We are all revolted at sex abuse. We all subscribe to the view that Jews should be merciful. We all believe in eradicating the evil in our midst.

So we find it easier to believe that someone is misinformed or ignorant. Or we at least believe that people can be shamed into doing the right thing. But when I consider what I have observed in this case it is clear that Litzman is beyond such influence. People like him have to be eradicated from our midst. I am not advocating violence. I mean no honors, no memberships in coalitions, no aliyot, no contributions, and pickets around their buildings and events.

That may seem harsh. I can see people thinking we know he is a sinner but maybe it was from ignorance. Or even if it was knowing, maybe he is capable of repentance.

At moments like this I think of Adam Clayton Powell, the Baptist Minister and Harlem Congressmen who was considered militant for his time. He reconciled his militancy with his Christianity by saying” If a man hits me on one cheek, I offer him my other cheek. If he hits me on the other cheek I beat the hell out of him.”

Giving someone another chance is how we find out if we are dealing with someone who is guilty but not evil. Giving someone too many other chances shows us up as cowards, and makes us complicit in the evil.

If Ger can get away with this chutzpah, every child hurt by these perverts protected by Ger has the right to look at us and say “how could you“? At that point it might be to late to restore their faith in our decency.

Postscript- Two weeks after I completed this post I stumbled on an article about Yaacov Litzman Pelted with Kugels by Slonim Chassidim. Not my style of protest, but nothing to sneeze at. My spirits rose. Then they fell when I read that the Slonim Rebbe demanded that each of the kugel throwers personally apologize to Litzman and beg forgiveness or they would not be allowed to attend tisch. So they all did apologize. Saddest of all, was the reason they were angry with him. He opposed their candidate for Mayor of Jerusalem.

This only reinforces my anger. It shows that the failure to challenge him on Mondrowitz is not because they are too nice. It also shows that Rebbes have very powerful ways of keeping their Chassidim in line. However, political pull matters more than children.

Good [very] early morning! I hope you’ve all had splendid weekends and are now ready for FALL!

Good [very] early morning! I hope you’ve all had splendid weekends and are now ready for FALL! I love summer, but I think the early months of fall are just about my favorite things. I love apple cider (and their sneaky counterpart, the apple cider donut), apple picking, light sweaters, spending my birthday with family and friends, putting on a silly costume for Halloween, baking for Thanksgiving… time has sure been flying, let me tell you!

I spent the weekend with Ari’s family celebrating Rosh Hashana, or the Jewish New Year. (Click here to read more.)

‘

To celebrate, Ilana and I made some killer cookies from Martha Stewart’s Cookies cookbook.

We made chocolate and vanilla cookies as well as vanilla and raspberry cream fillings; we mixed and matched.

I must be a traditionalist, but I liked the “Oreos” best.

In addition to cookies, we also ate lots of pickles…

Challah bread and gefilte fish with horseradish…

Potato kugel…

Vegetarian matzoh ball soup made especially for me and Christine… I love this, but haven’t been able to eat in years because it’s usually made with chicken stock.

We had two very nice dinners…

And we ate our fill of sweet treats, of course.

But most important, of course, are the friends and family I shared these meals with.

The holiday came to a close for this morning when I whipped out of town on the Vamoose. At least I got to share one last breakfast with everyone

The rest of the day was spent in a haze of unpacking, catching up on work, eating bits and pieces, and going for a 4.5 mile run.

My mom made the trek to see me for dinner. We had a special dinner at Locale, where Ari and I had eaten at once before… that time, however, we were on our way to his parents’ house!

We each had 1.5 glasses of Mouton Cadet, a French wine my mom remembers drinking with her friends.

I nibbled on an olive…

We shared an order of fried calamari; I only had a few pieces because I was saving room…

…for fresh linguine with mussels, clams, squid, and shrimp in a white wine sauce.

This was so good, it was hard to keep myself from eating the whole thing! I boxed up half, and took my mom’s leftovers as well. I see a lot of pasta in my future!

On the way home, I stopped at the grocery store to pick up some spicy necessities (say it with me: Hefty tall kitchen bags! Hefty tall kitchen bags!) and found quite the bargain:

Enough coconut water to last me a week, at least! And this only cost $3.99. I love the interesting flavors of O.N.E. beverages, but where I am in my budge, they’re just too expensive for me to consume regularly. I’ll let you know how these taste, but these may make both my tummy and my purse very happy!

I also finally purchased some Purely Decadent Vanilla ice cream…

I jazzed it up with some melted pop rock chocolate and walnuts.

This was so rich and creamy. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I loved it. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been in love with everything coconut recently, and this really hit the spot.

It was a wonderful weekend, from spending time with Family Upwelling to dining with Mom, to watching Waltz With Bashir all by my lonesome. If you haven’t yet seen this film, I highly recommend it… it’s a very brutal movie about the 1982 Lebanon War, but it’s beautifully animated and the story is incredible. Check it out, but with caution. I’ve been reminded again and again and again how lucky I am to be surrounded by loving family and friends, live with a roof over my head, and the food of my choosing on my plate. Life is sweet.

DER KOPF

FORESTEYES or MY SCARY BALLHEAD

Sometimes grocery shopping is boring and mundane. In fact, it mostly is. Today I ran to the local kosher establishment to get some groceries for Shabbat, intending it to be just a grocery run. So I am standing in line waiting my turn for stuff from the deli counter, the chassidishe music blasting near me. A bewigged lady in black is ahead of me, and behind me an ancient-looking rabbi type – long white beard, dark suit, white shirt and payes down to his pupik. Rabbi Pupik appeared to wink at me, but I told myself it was a facial tic. Then I glanced back to see him tapping his foot with the music. I cracked a small grin. Suddenly he throws his arms up, lifts his head to the heavens and starts to dance like he is at an einekel’s (grandson) wedding with a joyful beaming grin on his face. This dance lasted maybe 20 seconds, but oh how it lifted my spirits and left me with a smile on my face. Good for you Rabbi Pupik!!

I went next door to what I call “My Kugel Place” – their potato kugel tastes exactly the same way that my Savta’s used to taste. It’s a necessary stop for me when we are eating at home for Shabbat. Must have me my kugel. So I walk in, and a voice calls to me from the back of the store. “Can I help you?” I peer around, and the very jolly chassidishe counter person is sitting on chair at the back of the store, with the other (teenaged boy) counterperson in front of him, backwards on a chair. Chassidishe Dude has a hand held massaging device and is using it to ease the tension from the teenage counterperson’s back. I wasn’t the only customer in the store, and as each person came in they yelled out “can I help you?” only getting up from their comfortable positions when someone needed something. I have to say because of the aforementioned dancing I was in high spirits so this was just funny to me, and I joked around with them. “sorry to disturb your massage but can I have some……”. We joked around that they should put a sign up front – free massage with your potato kugel order. It could totally bring more business their way!!

I had the opportunity to order a couple new books last night, so here is what I picked up. I’ll just paste the synopses from Amazon beside each book.

The Hauerwas Reader, Stanley Hauerwas

Stanley Hauerwas is one of the most widely read and oft-cited theologians writing today. A prolific lecturer and author, he has been at the forefront of key developments in contemporary theology, ranging from narrative theology to the “recovery of virtue.” Yet despite his prominence and the esteem reserved for his thought, his work has never before been collected in a single volume that provides a sense of the totality of his vision.

The editors of The Hauerwas Reader, therefore, have compiled and edited a volume that represents all the different periods and phases of Hauerwas’s work. Highlighting both his constructive goals and penchant for polemic, the collection reflects the enormous variety of subjects he has engaged, the different genres in which he has written, and the diverse audiences he has addressed. It offers Hauerwas on ethics, virtue, medicine, and suffering; on euthanasia, abortion, and sexuality; and on war in relation to Catholic and Protestant thought. His essays on the role of religion in liberal democracies, the place of the family in capitalist societies, the inseparability of Christianity and Judaism, and on many other topics are included as well.
Perhaps more than any other author writing on religious topics today, Hauerwas speaks across lines of religious traditions, appealing to Methodists, Jews, Anabaptists or Mennonites, Catholics, Episcopalians, and others.

After Virtue: A Study in Moral Theory, Alasdair MacIntyre

In this classic work, Alasdair MacIntyre examines the historical and conceptual roots of the idea of virtue, diagnoses the reasons for its absence in personal and public life, and offers a tentative proposal for its recovery. While the individual chapters are wide-ranging, once pieced together they comprise a penetrating and focused argument about the price of modernity. In the Third Edition prologue, MacIntyre revisits the central theses of the book and concludes that although he has learned a great deal and has supplemented and refined his theses and arguments in other works, he has “as yet found no reason for abandoning the major contentions” of this book. He remains “committed to the thesis that it is only from the standpoint of a very different tradition, one whose beliefs and presuppositions were articulated in their classical form by Aristotle, that we can understand both the genesis and the predicament of moral modernity.”

How to Read the [Hebrew] Bible: A Guide to Scripture, Then and Now, James L. Kugel

Kugel’s tour de force of biblical scholarship juxtaposes two different ways of reading the Bible: the ancient biblical interpretations, ranging from the Book of Jubilees to Augustine, that he explored in The Bible as It Was, and the modern historical approach that challenges the historical veracity of scripture and seeks instead to find its writers’ original sources and purposes. It can be a jarring journey for those schooled in traditional views, but what emerges is a fresh, even strange, and very rich view of everything from the Garden of Eden to Isaiah’s dream vision of God. Refreshingly undogmatic and often witty, Kugel brings an intimate knowledge of the Hebrew Bible to illuminate small points as well as large. He discusses who the ancient Israelites were; the resemblances between YHWH and Canaanite gods; the unique role of the prophet in Ancient Near Eastern religions; the nature of ancient wisdom literature; and what the Bible means when it calls Solomon the wisest of men. The result is a stunning narrative of the evolution of ancient Israel, of its God and of the entire Hebrew Bible, contrasted with ancient interpretations that aimed to uncover hidden meanings and moral lessons. So, for example, for the ancients, the story of Cain and Abel is a tale of good versus evil. For the moderns, it was originally a story of origin, about the relation between ancient Israelites and the fierce Kenites to their south. While Kugel is a traditional Jew, he sees the modern approach as compelling, so the dilemma is whether a person of faith can read scripture in both the old way and the new. Drawing on Judaism’s nonfundamentalist approach, Kugel’s proposed answer is that the original purpose of the texts and their lack of historical accuracy matters less than their underlying message: to serve God.
