I know, I know this is super late, sorry! I decided to mix it up by showing something that inspires me besides quotes about positivity. Color! I have thing for colors (especially on the nails!) and love visiting design and color websites for inspiration, whether it be for a project or just a smile. You can see color combos and patterns made by other users or make some of your own. It’s like a virtual color wheel, but better! You can see what colors match or make great contrasts, or search a specific color or pattern to see tons of different combos. It’s also perf for when you want to try new colors in your makeup looks. Brighten up your day with some color by checking out sites like COLOURlovers and kuler. Hope the rest of your day is full of bright colors!

Using Kuler, I have collected a number of fiery colours that I can use as a palette when I draw out the background and levels of the Fire chapter. This way I can keep a consistant feel and style for the entire chapter.

I actually hope to blend the styles of the Earth levels into the Fire levels, as there is going to be a somewhat circular progression of colours and levels, to the point that some of the later levels are reconstructed versions of the originals.

Using Kuler, I have collected a number of earthy colours that I can use as a palette when I draw out the background and levels of the Earth chapter. This way I can keep a consistant feel and style for the entire chapter.

For folks who are stumped about what colors to use for . . . well, whatever . . . there are a few tools out in the cloud that could come in handy.  Here is my favorite:

Kuler Interface for Manually Creating a Scheme

This is Adobe’s color scheming offering to the cloud.  It’s a nice little Web 2.0 color schemer.  Users can create their own colors schemes as well as rate, comment on and download (as an Adobe swatch file) other user’s color schemes.  Adobe products, namely Illustrator and Photoshop, now have a Kuler interface built into them where you can directly access or contribute to color schemes from the cloud.  This functionality allows users to recolor whatever they want based on whatever colors are popular or highly rated (or not).  In this example, I’ve recolored one of the most popular images on Digg from the past couple of days.  It’s a “mysterious supernova“.  The first image in the sequence is simplified to 5 colors with a live trace in Illustrator.  The others are recolored using some of the most highly rated color schemes as evaluated by the Kuler community.

Kuler isn’t alone, however.  There are many other handy color scheming tools out there.  Here are a few:

1.  12-Step Color Blender (good for finding the colors right in between two colors you are working with – yellow and blue makes . . . what again?)

2.  COLOURlovers (go nuts with colors (or, colours), palettes and paterns)

3.  Beta Daily Color Scheme (a somewhat daily color scheme recommendation)

4.  Color Palette Generator (upload an image and see what you get)

5.  Color Scheme Designer (here’s a nice one that will simulate what your scheme will look like to people with various types of color blindness)

6.  Type Tester (this is a bit tangential, but I like it – it will show you color scheme and type combos)

7.  Tartan Maker (er, for the heck of it – make a tartan.  go on . . . make one . . . )

Kleuren zijn miskend. Het lijkt het laagje dat op alles ligt, maar in realiteit is het één van de meest expressieve elementen in onze omgeving. Kleuren zijn subtiel; zeggen iets op een impliciete manier. Ik heb al wat boeken gelezen om te begrijpen wat de betekenis van kleuren is, maar nu pas besef ik wat hun emotionele kracht is. Ik ontdekte een zeer leuke site van Adobe Kuler die je toelaat je eigen kleurenpalet samen te stellen. “Samenstellen” is weer zo’n rationele benadering, maar via een subtool kan je op gevoel een kleurencombinatie maken. Selecteer een foto die bij je gevoel past, laadt die op en automatisch wordt je een kleurenpalet voorgeschoteld.

Dit glas cava met bosvruchten dronk ik deze zomer bij de Geertjes. Was een bijzonder gezelllige avond, zwoel weer en fijn gezelschap. Maar dat drankje en die bessen voelden op één of andere manier goed aan. De kleurencombinatie die eruit voortvloeit is net zo warm !

I just got got done reading a terrific web post on Six Revisions titled: Five Favorite Web Applications of Designers. In the article Six Revisions Jacob Gube outlines the following five programs:

• Fresh Books – Web based invoicing tool, particularly aimed at Freelance Designers (integrates with Basecamp)
• Google Analytics – Google’s stellar site analytics software
• Basecamp - Online project management software
• Dropbox - Online, web based file management tool (allows you to share files with colleagues/clients)
• Kuler - Cool color tool by Adobe (allows easy creation of color swabs for designs)

I have to say in one way or another I have used each of these applications. We initially experimented with Freshbooks on learning of its integration with Basecamp. But, unfortunately I would say this list SHOULD have been divvied up, as they are all very seperate, some are for actual designing, and others are for business purposes.

Personally, if I had to write a similar article I would have created, Top 4 Business Web Applications for Freelancers and would have selected the following:

Accounting – Quickbooks Online - Freshbooks is great, but nothing is as battle tested and business friendly as Quickbooks. Now, with that being said, it can be a daunting task to learn how to use quickbooks, but EVERY accountant and bookkeeper on the planet knows how to work with it and it can generate and track anything and everything financial at your company. Be you large or small, quickbooks can handle your businesses financial needs. AND, the new online version is stellar, cost effective, and being web-based, accessible from anywhere. Personally, if you go with anything else you may save some time on invoicing, but  you will spend A LOT more time trying to get the program to interface with your financial team.

Project Management – Basecamp – I would have eliminated the dropbox program completely, as Basecamp solved this problem for our company. As you probably already know, Basecamp allows you to manage your projects, deadlines, tasks, track time, etc. But, you can not only interface with clients on a project, but have them upload and share files as well, eliminating the need for a separate service.

File Storage/Server – Egnyte – Egnyte isn’t quite as big of a name as the other two items on this list, but we’ve found it to be a godsend. We are currently all scattered around, so having a central physical server was difficult. After doing some research we settled on Egnyte. It integrates tightly with Windows so you can access all of your company’s files securely either through their web interface, or by mapping their service to a local drive (and drag, drop, and open files as if they were on your personal computer). In addition, there are nice reports on updated files.

Email – Rackspace Email Hosting - Email probably ties the telephone as the MOST VITAL COMMUNICATION TOOL FOR ANY BUSINESS. Because of its vital-ness (is that a word), your email must be secure and up 100% of the time. We use Rackspace for our email, it’s incredibly fast, fairly inexpensive, but incredibly reliable.

Every Friday I am going to try to find five things I love currently and here are this weeks…

1. Jimmy Needham. I just discovered this amazing artist via iTunes Genius recommendations. He reminds me a little of Jason Mraz.

2. Scarfs. I love scarfs no matter what season, but wearing them in fall is even better. I have way too many scarfs so here are a few of my favorite.

3. My work. I love being able to see my work printed. This piece below is an illustration I drew for the magazine, Birds & Bloom, which is part of the Reader’s Digest Association. I created the basic shape of the flowers in Illustrator and then used Photoshop to add the color.

4. Bootie slippers. I got these at Old Navy in the spring for like a buck. I love them…they are so stinking warm and now that it’s getting colder out I find myself wearing them all the time!

5. Kuler. I love Adobe’s Kuler website. When I’m stuck on finding a color scheme or needs some color inspiration I come here.

This is another one of those great design resources that I really enjoy.  Not only is it useful in finding a great color palette  complete with CMYK and RGB numbers you can sign in and download the palette to import it into your swatches in the various adobe applications.  It has an truely unique and amazing interface too.  If you haven’t hear me say it before I will say it again, I love Adobe!!  they continue to make make unsurpassed products and applications and constantly blow my mind with what they will have next.  Even if you aren’t a designer it is fun to play with and possibly find a few colors to paintyour next project room in your apt/house.  so check out all the features because they are fun and ample.

Coloring with Adobe Kuler

Adobe has offered another tool for quite some time that should take its rightful spot next to Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Flash in our design toolbox. It’s called Kuler (pronounced “cooler” according to Adobe), and its name is certainly appropriate.

Kuler is a Web-based application that allows users to browse, create, and share color themes through the Kuler Web site, the Kuler desktop application (direct download link; requires Adobe AIR), or a Kuler widget for Mac OS X’s Dashboard (available for download from the Links page on the Kuler site). Of course, Kuler is also available inside your favorite Adobe CS4 desktop applications including: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, and Fireworks. Kuler is available online for free, and you don’t have to be a CS4 user to take advantage of it.

The use of color is generally one of the most important aspects of any design. But not all designers are blessed with the ability to create color combinations that work well together. Most of us know a great color-combo when we see one, but couldn’t create one if our lives depended on it. This is where Kuler can help.

We’ve been working on web pages in Digital Portfolio using Adobe Dreamweaver CS4.  We also used Kuler to pick a color pallet.

For the past few weeks, we have been working inclass in Digital Portfolio with Adobe Dreamweaver attempting to do some custom site building.

First, we had to design a logo (already done for me) and a color scheme for our sites off of Kuler.

The color scheme I orginally picked was called TOOL Remix. But I did a little work and adjustments myself to create my own custom color swatches.

While our sites are far from finished (as we still have a lot to learn), here is a preview of what I have done so far:

The natigation on the site has roll over tabs (which turn red when hovered over) that allow the user to pick other pages to view images.

So I’ve been a follower of The Perfect Pallate for a few months now. What can I say… I just love color. 

Long before I started wedding planning, I had to search for appealing and matching color schemes. (I’m a graphic designer, remember) So I would utilize such tools as Color Hunter or The Color Pallate Generator.

But now Adobe (let us all take a moment to praise their greatness…lol) has released the coolest color scheme tool ever.  It’s called Kuler and it allows you to download a color palette generator widget right to your desktop. Once you have it running all you have to do is type in a theme like “ocean” or “fall”… anything you can think of and you will be given hundreds of color combinations.

And for those DIY Invitation brides, Kuler lets you pull the color scheme swatches right into Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign. Pretty schnazzy, right?

Where have you gotten your color scheme ideas from?

I feel like I often have a hard time narrowing down my inspiration files when I’m faced with an actual decision about colors in a room. I have a case of  ‘obsessed’ with too many different styles, one day I’m modern, the next day I’m rustic. While I throw around the word obsessed, I think it’s appropriately used when talking about the pictures that Jenny from Little Green Notebook has posted of her living room. It’s so spot on, the bold striped curtains, the mustard yellow couch, the dusty gray wing back chair, the burnt orangey-red accents. This one needs a special place in my inspiration file!

I dropped the pictures into Kuler’s color theme extractor and pulled out this gorgeous palette. I love the bold burnt orange and mustard colors against the calm, cool navy and gray.
