this past sunday the brazos locavores visited the csa farm of mike and amy richardson, established in december of 2008 and located near kurten, texas (about 20 minutes northeast of bryan via hwy 21).

the richardson’s lease eight acres of land and are currently producing tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, squash, peas, cantaloupe, okra, israel melon and watermelon on its sandy top loam.  mike, a fire fighter with the bryan fire department, grew up farming with his family in rockdale (also richardson farms, see its recent write up in edible austin).  amy is a flight nurse and recalls gardening with her grandparents nearby.  while mike has experience growing vegetable crops conventionally, the aim of this csa is to produce crops with as many sustainable practices as possible.  the soil is amended with composted manures and tilled in cover crops.  weeding is done mechanically, requiring no chemical control.  insects are controlled by naturally-occurring predators.  water is delivered by surface drip irrigation.

while these methods of crop production are “more prevention than reaction,” they are providing mike and amy with many learning opportunities along the way.  they intend to pass this learning onto their customers, educating them on the benefits and sometimes unpredictable processes of farming and sustainable food production.

the richardsons can currently provide produce for 15 csa share holders.  one share costs $100 and is good for one year.  it works much like a debit card, where each disbursement of vegetables is tallied and deducted from the remaining balance.  unlike most csa’s where the farmer determines the vegetables given each week, the richardson csa model seeks input from its customers, delivering only what the customer wants, how much they want, and when they want it.  any remaining vegetable surplus is sold at the brazos valley farmers’ markets.

the richardsons’ enthusiasm for growing healthy products for their brazos valley consumers is inspiring.  here’s to healthy soils and a bountiful harvest…

Eu não agüento mais ver o mundo todo falando sobre o fim de carreira do Guga – como se ela estivesse acabando agora. Já acabou, faz tempo, isso se um dia o tenista teve, de fato, uma carreira de verdade, não apenas um errante pelo circuito mundial. Sua qualidade é indiscutível, especialmente no saibro. A questão, talvez, apenas, seja essa necessidade de heroicizá-lo pelos resultados obtidos.

Guga não é um coitado. Vem de família de boa formação, nunca passou fome, não sobreviveu a uma infância miserável, muito menos foi um caso inacreditável de um esportista a conseguir resultados miraculosamente. Por mais que a mídia desportiva brasileira não dê a menor importância a qualquer coisa senão futebol – até mostra outras coisas, mas sem destaque -, para escolher o tênis, ele teve suporte financeiro e emocional para construir sua carreira. Se não conseguiu fazê-lo, é outro problema.

Vem dessa constatação o maior demérito de Guga. Tinha muito talento, isso não se discute. Foi, sem dúvida, o maior tenista brasileiro de todos os tempos – homem, claro, não nos esqueçamos de Maria Esther Bueno -, não há comparações com Jaimes Oncins, Luiz Mattars, Ricardos Mellos da vida, como todos os outros foram, são e parecem condenados a sempre ser, graças ao nível desgraçado da organização do esporte brasileiro. Talvez o problema seja que Guga tivesse potencial para ter sido muito mais, e nunca foi – e o futuro do tênis tupiniquim já chora por isso.

Posso ser leviano, afinal, não tenho como avaliar seu grau de contusão. Mas a impressão que sempre tive é a de o tenista nunca ter levado sua carreira devidamente a sério. Mesmo quando jogava, parecia necessitar de algum desafio, de se divertir na quadra, para conseguir levar a partida a sério e ganhá-la. Não à toa, às vezes corria riscos bobos, perdia partidas fáceis. Quando foi número um do mundo, poderia ter feito o que quisesse, mas ficou restrito a um ótimo atleta do saibro. E nada mais. Não é pouco, mas não poderia ser mais? A função do esportista não é desafiar o seu limite?

Guga acabou sendo um manezinho da ilha a suprir, – sem ser sua intenção, mas jamais contra a sua vontade -, a ausência pós-morte de Senna no imaginário do brasileiro de sucesso que passa a perna nos gringos. Na nossa mentalidade de vira-lata, ver um compatriota se impondo perante os outros não serve de exemplo, mas de desforra. O tenista se encaixou nisso. Poderia ser uma marca no esporte tupiniquim, mas preferiu não perder suas ondas a potencializar sua carreira. Andre Agassi quase fez isso, porém, recuperou-se a tempo de ser um dos maiores de sua geração.

No fundo, não sei quão ruim é isso. O tenista atraiu a simpatia por jamais ter deixado de ser um macunaíma do tênis – alguém a divertir os gringos com seu cabelo esquisito, seu jeito bobalhão, completamente avesso à competição voraz do esporte. Diferentemente de outros heróis brasileiros que trabalharam sua imagem para transformá-la num ícone, como Pelé, até num mártir, como Senna, ou cujo mito se deu pelo fim trágico, como Mané Garrincha. Guga, agora, vai brincar de mochileiro pela Europa. É estranho, mas, talvez, esse seja seu maior mérito. Infelizmente, ninguém parece valorizar isso.
