Dr. Brian Appleby posted an interesting blog this morning about genetic susceptibility to kuru.  I thought it was interesting to learn more about what codon 129 is responsible for since wee see this on our NPDPSC autopsy paperwork.  As someone who lost a mother at age 56 to fCJD, I thought it was interesting to learn that codon 129 affects age of onset of the disease.  I’ll have to find my mom’s paperwork, because I can’t remember what she was on codon 129.

Another TV show is tackling the difficult and complicated matter of prion diseases.  This time it’s another Fox show, “The Simpsons,” however, the show does nothing to help my cause of educating people about CJD.  Instead, it does everything to reinforce stereotypes about “mad cow disease.”  Lisa Simpson is the only one who speaks the truth, calling it an “abomination” to feed cows to cows.

I found the clip on Ecorazzi, which does blog about the show with class.  Thank you, Ecorazzi for understanding that prion diseases are no laughing matter.

1. Vegetarians can, and have, contracted CJD.

2. CJD does not make every one of its victims “mad” or aggressive.  Usually when BSE affects a cow, it does alter the personality of the animal. A normally calm cow can become aggressive, but a normally aggressive cow can become calm.

3.  People do not get “mad cow disease.”  BSE is “mad cow disease” and affects cows.  If a person eats tainted meat and contracts a prion disease from it, it is called “vCJD.”

To be honest, I’m intrigued as to what’s going on at Fox.

That’s two shows now working CJD into their plots, even if not calling the disease by its proper name.  I also find it ironic that this ‘Simpsons’ episode shows cannibalism–when cannibalism in Papua New Guinea a couple hundred years ago is believed to have been the beginning of prion disease with Kuru.  There is another interesting moment where a brain comes out of a skull and gets covered with glasses and dentures, in effect personifying the brain.  (Relax, it’s a cartoon).  This also jumped out at me since CJD is a brain disease.  Seeing this reinforces what I’ve believed since “24″ saw Jack Bauer get CJD, that someone at Fox lost someone to CJD.

Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is the story of Mahabharat retold from a woman’s perspective…more so one central character who was also considered to be the cause of the great war designed by destiny to wipe out evil as the cosmic universe termed it.. And this lady was Draupadi or Panchaali as she was commonly known as.

Woven on the basis of history and Indian mythology, the story is half fiction and completely magical…and covers most of the key aspects of Mahabharat as seen by Draupadi herself. As you turn the pages, you cannot but imagine yourself stepping back into time and witnessing the events unfold before you. Such is the power of the epic and such is the power this narration holds.

Draupadi is known to be born out of a sacrificial fire as a result of a great homam performed by king Drupad of the kingdom of Panchala. Drupad has been defeated by Drona’s disciples the Pandava princes especially one – Arjun and humbled but seeking vengence he performs the homam in the hopes of getting a son who can avenge him. The spirits bless Drupad with Drishtadyumna and Draupadi…though an unwanted child Drupad albeit reluctantly adopts Draupadi owing to the prophecy the spirits make concerning her.

From then on we witness Draupadi’s childhood and her stepping into adulthood with only her dear brother Dhri and Krishna as her companions and advisors. The readers are also provided a glimpse into the Draupadi’s psychological make-up which is dominated by her yearning to be loved unconditionally and to love in return. She feels stiffled by her father’s palace and longs to be free from the laws that govern a woman’s code of conduct. Unlike the other princesses and vain queens of the court, Draupadi is intelligent, sharp although lacking in wisdom of worldly affairs. Her only other well-wisher and companion is Dhai Ma, her nurse who both spoils her and admonishes her but loves her dearly.

Drupad holds a swayamvar intending to lure out of the Pandavas out of hiding, hoping to form an alliance with them by marrying Draupadi to Arjun. He succeeds although it results in a heartbreak for Draupadi and Karna who fall in love with each other at first sight. Draupadi also commits the first of her mistakes by asking the question she’s been warned to hold back. When she visits the humble hut of the Pandavas, Queen mother Kunti declares that all the 5 brothers should marry Draupadi thus dispelling any love that could’ve blossomed between Arjun and Draupadi. A distraught Draupadi is forced to marry the Pandavas and also bear the brunt of Arjun’s indifference towards her.

The Pandavas and their queen then move to their own palace at Indra Prastha which is built of illusions by the asura architect Maya out of a favor for them. The palace aptly named “Palace of Illusions” becomes the home that never was for the Pandavas for a decade or 2 before the fates bring about the chain of events that accelerates the advent of the great war – Duryodhan’s humiliation in the gardens where Draupadi commits the 2nd great mistake. The Pandavas lose their kingdom, wealth, honor and wife in gambling, and a humiliated Draupadi curses the kingdom of Kuru with death and destruction. This is followed by a 13 year exile which only fuels Draupadi’s vengeance against Krishna and Vyasa’s advice.

The great war finally dawns and the battle that lasts for 18 days claims over a million lives including those of Draupadi’s sons and kinsmen. The Pandavas are left with a charred kingdom which they bring back to prosperity and after installing their only heir Parikshit as the king leave for the himalayas on their last journey.

Draupadi faithfully accompanies them…but she is the first to fall. Krishna holds her hand until her dying breath and when released from the body her soul joyfully reunites in eternity with Karna’s soul.

I’ve always favored Mahabharat over Ramayan for reading and have read it a couple of times. But what made this particular narration even more powerful is the fact that it is told from a woman’s perspective…not just outlining the story in general but also describing the emotions, the thoughts not to mention the rules that governed the actions of all the men in her life. It also shows Draupadi’s transformation from a naive young girl craving for love and affection to a strong, proud woman who is blinded by vengeance, hatred and desire.

There is also a strong element of lamentation on Draupadi’s part – while she realizes that her actions have only hastened the long-pending war…she is powerless to stop them fueled by her desire, hatred and vengeance. They rule her until the very end as does her undying love for Karna. It would be one book that I’d like to re-read again and probably own a copy of although it is the author’s interpretation of the events.

I was browsing through my favourite second-hand bookshop today and I came across the following book: Cannibals, Cows and The CJD Catastrophe by Jennifer Cooke. The following is an excerpt of Cooke’s own description of her book:

From the jungles of Papua New Guinea in the 1950s, through Australian fertility clinics, to the butcher shops of Britain in the 1990s, a creeping epidemic has claimed the lives of thousands of men, women and children.

The Eastern Highlanders of PNG called it kuru – the shivering disease. In the West, we know it as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). To the world’s media, it is now notorious as “Mad cow” disease.

All three are among a group of rare human and animal diseases that induce neurological disaster – microscopic holes in the brain, sticky plaques of protein that prevent vital messages between nerve cells – and a plethora of symptoms including staggering, jerking, memory loss, personality change and dementia. Collectively, they are known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or TSEs. A more recent term, “prion” disease, to denote the apparent cause of these diseases by a “proteinaceous infectious particle” in the brain, is also widely used.

TSEs, or prion diseases, are not only infectious, they are also inheritable in a very small number of cases. They have no cure and no treatment and no reliable pre-mortem test, so absolute confirmation cannot be made until a post-mortem examination of thin slices of the brain under a microscope reveals massive damage in the form of spongy holes.

Well over 3,000 former cannibals from the Fore area of PNG’s mountainous Eastern Highlands succumbed to kuru after repeated feasts in which they ate dead relatives as a mourning rite. The women and children in particular ate the brains and smeared them on their bodies as a mark of respect. There is speculation that this practice may have led to kuru infection via either oral or intraocular routes when, for instance, mothers wiped tiny children’s eyes with their hands.

CJD and its related diseases incubate in humans for decades. Kuru cases are still emerging, despite the cessation of cannibalism in the late 1950s. The most recent case had an incubation period of well over 40 years.

The legacy of accidental CJD transmission will continue for years to come.

I will provide a little book review of my own focusing on CJD’s relationship with the Fore people of PNG once I get through this book . Fascinating stuff.
