The much-anticipated ride, to test out our bike to bike radios finally came today, the destination c

The much-anticipated ride, to test out our bike to bike radios finally came today, the destination chosen was kusadasi, a sea-side town about 150 miles away. An early start, I was to meet up with Theo at Ortaca, we would then ride together to Mugla to meet up with Boris and Andac.

Notice the ends of the fingers have been cut off from Theo’s gloves, he borrowed the thick winter gloves from a friend, but the gloves were to small for his hands, and hence, the finger tips had to be cut off !!

It’s about an hours ride to Mugla, the town is over 1500 feet above sea level and it gets pretty cold up there in winter. We were pulled over by the police in Mugla for a document check, I have never had a document check take 20 minutes before, it must be Theo’s fault !

All papers in order, we head off to find Boris and Andac.

We had a quick play with the radios, but alas, Boris has not been able to find headsets with the correct ear piece jacks, despite cobbling together adapters etc. his radios will not work properly without the correct jack. The radios are made here in Turkey, so one would be forgiven for thinking that it would be easy to buy the correct jacks etc. here in Turkey….but no!!

With mine being the only functional set out of three, the test was obviously abandoned and a shopping trip now began between here and Kusadasi, to find an electronics shop.

First stop was around 10 AM for breakfast, Boris had made a flask of coffee and also brought along some doughnut type things to eat.

While we were parked I took a couple of photos of the PTT switch, which I mounted on the mirror stem and can reach easily with my thumb, also photos of the handlebar brace and new tank pad.

The new tank pad is much larger than the old one, so should help to prevent more scratches on the tank should I ever use a tank bag again.

Off we go again towards Kusadasi.

Andac on his BMW F650.

Theo on his Kanuni GT 250.

Boris on his Honda Africa Twin.

After another stop for ciggies and a look at the map, I thought it would be fun to play with the camera and try for those difficult mirror shots.

I didn’t notice at first, but Theo is stood up on the pegs trying to get in on the shot.

After another hour or so we stopped off at a country cafe for tea.

Riding through the countryside on the outskirts of Kusadasi, it was cotton harvest time.

On the outskirts of Kusadasi was the first of many shops that we called in on to find the correct headset jack, Theo and I were in some deep, deep conversation in the car park about either bikes or monkeys lol.

As you descend the hill into kusadasi, the 13th Century Byzantine castle comes in to view out in the bay.

We parked up on the pavement, Boris and Theo went off walking around kusadasi in search of electrical shops whist Andac and myself sat by the bay drinking tea.

After a fruitless search of Kusadasi plus a neighbouring town we headed back empty-handed.

All the good photos are courtesy of Boris, next trip together I shall have to steal that excellent camera of his !

One of the grand adventures of traveling is shopping in strange markets and bazaars, foreign supermarkets and local stalls. Exotique clothing, native foods, unfamiliar local brands and all manner of trinkets and artwork can be had if you are willing to brave to hordes of people and the aggressive solicitation of local vendors. I believe the first markets I ever experienced were the flea markets that were famous in Florida when I was a child and today my travels have taken me to the streets of Mexico and Central America, the manic markets of Beijing and Hong Kong, the urban mayhem of Tanzania Africa and the bazaar bazaar’s of Istanbul and Kusadasi in Turkey. I have traversed the shops all across Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Croatia, Iceland, Norway, Copenhagen and the infamous Amsterdam. While I am by no means an expert at such things, I have, through these experiences, gathered a list of ten rules when dealing with negotiated prices. In North America it is normal to accept the price tag that is given to you, not to mention the additional taxes, but in most other parts of the world that is a more flexible situation and you should do well to prepare yourself for the rugged negotiations that lie ahead of you in your travels or suffer the inflated consequences.

A midnight New Years market in Hong Kong 2005/06

“The Ten Rules of Haggling” that I have come up are by no means the final say in the matter and many of you would be just as sure to add your own rules to the list, but over the years this process has treated me and those on the cruise ships whom I have passed them on to in good stead and so I now pass them over to you in the hopes that you can benefit from the times I purchased at the tourists price.

Rule #1: In some cultures the first or last sale of the day is an omen or is considered lucky

The fruit market in Barcelona 2008

Often times the first sale of the day is a sign for things to come and because many vendors want to get that first sale under their belt they are willing to give you a better price for the privilege. Also after a long day of dealing with customers you can often hang around when it starts to thin out and grab a real deal just before closing time. Sometimes just before a tour leaves a place, or the ship is going to depart I try to get a last minute deal on an item of interest. Fortunately for me if I don’t how the negotiations are going, the cruise ship will be back in a week or two and I can try again next time around.

Rule #2: Leave the tourist traps for the tourists, go local!

Busy market street in Florence 2008

A market street in Beijing China 2005

There will always be good shopping in the tourist areas, and sometimes you are looking for touristy items, but in this environment you will need all your skills to get the best deals since there are hordes of tourists just waiting to be taken advantage of. If you travel a little ways out of the main area, where the lazy people stop, you can often find quieter shops, often selling similar goods, where they are more apt to give you a deal since the traffic is lower. Travel even further to get to the local areas and you can start to get closer to local prices. Keep in mind that you will have to show some degree of savvy in local areas as people will often try to see what kind of a sucker you are before they give you a local’s price, but once you’ve earned their respect you are good as gold. Going local can even mean learning some of the language in the area as I did while shopping in China. Just by asking what the price was in Mandarin (Duo Shao Chien) dropped the price significantly because of the respect locals have when you make an effort to communicate beyond the numbers of a calculator.

Rule #3: Don’t bargain for things you aren’t interested in buying

Fish market on Lantau Island Hong Kong 2006

This is just a waste of time for both you and the vendor. Remember that these people are trying to support their lives and that while it can be fun to get a good deal its not a game and you shouldn’t go around trying to see how low you can get an item, only to walk away because you never wanted it in the first place. Some people feel like they need some practice before they get good at following these rules, but there is no need to bid on things you aren’t going to buy because, like poker, when your money isn’t actually on the line the game isn’t real anyways. If you really want to practice then proceed to rule four.

Rule #4: Always have a price in mind

Of course you wont know exactly what the local prices are without some local guidance, but you can still have an idea of what you think a fair price should be for the item you are purchasing and go from there. That way you know when you are ready to pull out your hard earned cash and make the purchase. You should obviously take into account the place you are buying from, the local standard of living and the authenticity of the item, and then try to aim for a price slightly lower then that, and by shopping enough, and getting good at rules number six and seven you will be well on your way to getting down to local prices.

Fish market in Barcelona 2009

Rule #5: Dress your clothes down and your smiles up!

Try not to go shopping in your best clothes and jewelry. Hide your camera gear and try not to carry all your previous purchases in multiple bags. All of these signs show that you are not only a very wealthy person – remember its all relative – but it also shows that you can afford to be separated with you money and that you are easily parted with it as well. I’m not suggesting you dress like a homeless person, but try not to be overly ostentatious or it will be nearly impossible to get a low price. The one thing you should dress up though is your face, with a smile. Remember not to take to seriously, especially when you are practically insulting them by starting at a ridiculously lower price then what they start at. Smiles are truly universal and can sometimes lower the price simply because you have made the transaction a friendly and joyous one.

Me in the mirror at a craft market on the Amalfi Coast, Naples Italy 2008

Rule #6: Feign Indifference

So much to look at!

Never ever turn to the person you are with and show how excited you are that you finally found what you have been looking for. Never smile at the item, or hold it up and admire it. Do as much covert research about the item before you ever touch it. Sometimes wearing sunglasses helps to hide where your interests are, but what I like to do is ask a few stalls what the price of a variety of items are so that I get a feel for the inflated starting prices. When I do end up seeing an item I am interested in I often ask about some of the other items in the persons shop with some level of excitement and then nonchalantly ask “well what about this one here, how much?” and then scoff at the price which is way to high and say “for this? Really, come on” and then place it back down for the time being. When I am in port from the cruise ship I would say “okay, that’s the passenger price, but I live on the ship so what’s the crew price?” However you decide to go about it, the point is that you shouldn’t show immediate interest in your item of choice as it will be less likely that the price will come down once the vendor knows it what you’ve always wanted.

Rule #7: Always start at $1

Me and a local artist in a market in Arusha Tanzania Africa 2009

It has been said that numbers and mathematics is a universal language, but those people have probably never negotiated in the markets of a country like China where I found that the universal language is the calculator. As I made my way around the silk markets filled with endless goods I found that most people tried to play the 50% off game. A salesperson would tell them a price and then they would cut that price in half and think they were getting a good deal. The problem is that salespeople all of the world know that game to and so they markup their items even more so that a 50% off deal to you is 2000% markup for them. What I liked doing was looking like I was in deep thought, SMILE! And then type one dollar into the calculator. Smiling is the key to make this game non-offensive to the salesperson. They usually grabbed the calculator and said “oh, you crazy, you very crazy man” and then proceeded to tell me why I should pay more then one dollar. Interestingly enough however the price would usually drop 50% the next time they punched it into the calculator. I would do the one dollar thing two to four more times before I really began the negotiations as this starting point was more realistic, but even then I wouldn’t rush to halve that price either, but would creep up to maybe five dollars and see what happened. Eventually I would get to a price that I thought was fair even though I know from experience that this procedure will still allow the vendor to make a good sale or they just wouldn’t sell it to you.

The market streets of Hong Kong 2006

Rule #8: Spend some time

Like Yin and Yang there is a fine balance to the art of spending the time of a salesperson. The idea is that you want to spend enough time with the vendor as possible so that they are invested in your purchase, but not so long that you become a permanent fixture in the shop and they know you aren’t going to leave without buying something. Ask casual questions, insist they help someone else, ask some more questions, maybe a little small talk, but do whatever you can to make sure that if the shop keeper loses your sale they have wasted all that precious time with you and since this is too big a cost for them they will surely be more reasonable. This will make them drop the price when you advance to rule number ten and can allow you to witness other people trying to bargain around you while getting a better feel for the salespersons methods.

The local bazaar Kusadasi Turkey 2007

Rule #9: Cash speaks!

A woman working on one of Turkey's famous carpets - Kusadasi 2009

When done properly, waving cold hard cash in the salespersons line of sight can often seal the deal at the price you have been trying to reach. This technique shouldn’t be used to early in the negotiations as it can backfire on you if you are too far away from the amount you are displaying. Of course if you pull out a wad of bills and try to figure out the amount while the vendor is present then you will have tipped your hand to them because they will see that you are in fact a wealthy tourist and not a poorly traveler who needs a good price. What I have learned to do to counter this problem is to have different denominations in different pockets so that I can pull out the correct amount without even looking. I may keep twenties in one pocket, fives in another and tens somewhere else and that way no matter where we are in the negotiations I have the ability to pull out the exact amount I am prepared to pay. This little trick not only works wonders in the markets but will also protect you from the threat of pickpockets since they will only get a fraction of the money you are carrying if you fall prey to their sticky hands.

A street market in Arusha Tanzania Africa 2009

Rule #10: Be willing to walk away

Silk Alley market in Beijing China 2005

Sometimes you can use body rocking to feign that you are willing to leave the shop even if you aren’t quite prepared to do that just yet. This will show indifference and will improve your bargaining position since the shopkeeper will feel like they have more to lose then you do. Sometimes however you wont feel right about what is transpiring in the negotiations, or you don’t think you are getting the best deal you can. If that is the case then be prepared to actually walk away. Walking away isn’t necessarily the final say on the matter as often times you will get chased down somewhere just outside the shop and given the price you have been wrangling for. If however that doesn’t happen check the surrounding shops and take another stab at it. Most markets have various vendors that sell the same stuff and one vendor may be having a better day and may make for a

Me in the spice market in Istanbul 2009

better situation for you to deal with. The biggest mistake tourists make is believing they’ll never see that item again so they feel forced into the purchase. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Necessity never made a good bargain”. The second biggest mistake is telling a vendor that the guy down the road offered to sell it to you at a much cheaper price. As a caveat to those who are fond of that approach, know that it will backfire on you as many times as it will work since I have found that there are usually a whole group of shops that are owned by the same person and the locals always know what the prices are, so if you shoot too low they will know you are lying and you wont have much room to maneuver after that. Remember as a last resort you can always make your way back to the original shop and purchase the item although this will certainly lower the bargaining power you have in the end.

Beautifully crafted lanterns in a market in Istanbul 2009

At the end of these ten rules you should not only have some great things to take home with you on your vacation, but you’ll have paid a lot less then most and will have some adventurous market stories to tell as well. Bargaining is a way of life for most of the world and can be a wonderful and often necessary addition to your travels, but always keep in mind that you are dealing with peoples livelihoods and that when all is said and done you should get a fair price and they should make a profit as well. Bargaining doesn’t have to be a win/lose proposition and with a little preparation, practice and patience you will end up creating win/win transactions everywhere you go. Happy Hunting!

Mobilyalarını zamanında teslimetmediği gerekçesiyle, Doğtaş Mobilya’ya parasını ödemeyen, bu yüzden de başı hacizlerle derde giren Tatlıses, oteline 12 milyon dolar değer biçti.
‘TAKAS YAPILMAZ’
Tatlıses’in Kuşadası Turgut Özal Bulvarı’nda yer alan otelinin ilanında “Takas yapılmaz” notu yer alıyor.
I got off the ship today, Wednesday the 23rd of September, in Kusadasi, Turkey for the first time si

I got off the ship today, Wednesday the 23rd of September, in Kusadasi,
Turkey for the first time since I got on the ship. When you are a “new sign-on”,
you have to do a series of trainings; safety, business ethics, guest interaction,
sexual harassment, etc, that eats up pretty much all of your free time.
Thankfully, I had some certifications from trainings that I’d done on the
Constellation, so I didn’t have to do as many trainings as I did at the
beginning of my last contract. I’m finally getting some free time.

Kusadasi, Turkey, is very cool. This was only my first venture into the
town and it was virtually a series of shops and eateries that stretched over
a vast area. The people are cool, though. You might think that, being an
overwhelmingly Moslem country that it might be a little intimidating for
westerners, but the locals were great. They made a joke of taking our money
and, using remarkably honed sales skills, succeeded far more than even
I thought was possible in making the sale. I actually was looking for a few
things, so I was an easy mark, but I knew that haggling is the way it goes here.
I needed a watch. I’ve been carrying around a Seiko alarm clock. You need to
know what time it is all the time on the ship. That’s just the way it is.

So I’m in the middle of this myriad of shops and I’m checking out the
watches. Of course, the sales guy comes over and starts chatting me up.
There was one I saw that I liked, simple, black and elegant and I let him
try to sell it to me. I asked how much it was and he said $55 American.
They always ask what currency you’re dealing in. They just make the
conversions automatically in their heads. I said that was too much and
I wanted to look around.

A quick observation – in this part of the world, when they beckon you
forward, they don’t do it with the palm up, they do it with the palm down. That
threw me off a little bit, but I caught on that it wasn’t some sinister gesture.
He asked me to make a counter offer. I told him I’d give him 20 bucks. I
kind of had the upper hand, since I really didn’t care if I carried my Seiko
alarm clock around to do my sets. Long story short, I got the watch for $25.

*************************************************************

I have gotten remarkably adjusted to life on The Solstice in a very short
amount of time. There was a contract question in the beginning that got
resolved today as it was supposed to be without a big stink. I’ve gotten
virtually all of my questions answered and, aside from a little problem
with insufficient hot water in my shower, I am pretty much firmly ensconced
in my cabin, 3588 forward.

The work schedule has been great. I play two, three and once I played four
sets a night and some of the sets are only a half hour. Most are 45 minutes.
I only met my cruise director, Dru, once and my bandmaster never gets in
touch unless I need to know something. I think I could really get to like it here
if this keeps up. Life is already sweet. The nice thing about the schedule is
that since I’m not getting overworked, I can give the sets I do everything I’ve
got and I think the guests are responding positively to that. When I get
overworked I have to “cut corners” so I can get through. I don’t have to do
that here. I do wish I had my Martin guitar, but the Fender is working out
nicely. I’m sure it will get better as I tweak the settings too.

There’s a few characters I should introduce you to right off the bat. Mike,
the bass singer in the a capella group, has been a great resource, as I said
in the previous post. He’s been doing ships for over ten years and he’s still
in his 30’s. He’s got it down. He’s a great guy too. We actually beat the
Philipino guys in team pool in the crew bar the other night. My first time at
the table I sank five balls in a row, so they think I know what I’m doing.
Eric is the manager of the Glass Blowing shop on the top deck. He signed
on the same time I did and so we had a lot of trainings together and you
just naturally gravitate to people who are from your country out of a need for
companionship. It’s his first contract and I can relate, so we’ve become
friends. He’s adjusting well. I’m also learning about glass blowing. You can
never learn too much.

I found the sauna and the gym. They are beautiful and I’ve taken full
advantage of both, although I hit one machine that hurt my back a bit. I have
to be careful about that. I won’t use that machine again. The Oceanview
Cafe is the place where I have most of my meals. They’ve got this Greek
yogurt that is whipped or something, but it’s delicious with fruit for
breakfast. Dinners are mostly sushi and selections from the extensive
salad bar. I make lunch my main meal in the crew mess. There’s an
assortment of things that appease my palate and satiate my cravings,
plus it’s a good place to meet other crew members. The mess is cool.

My friends from New Jersey who are on this cruise seem to be having
a splendid time. Today was the first time I was able to spend any time with
them. I spent some time with them in Kusadasi, but I am not a tolerant
shopper and after a while I had to excuse myself. Actually I had to head
back to the ship anyway, but we had a good time. The shop owners kept
refering to them as “my harem”. We had fun with that. I offered several
times to sell them cheap. The Turks have good senses of humor, and
they are snappy dressers.

Of course, there are Mosques scattered throughout the town, but it’s
not an in-your-face kind of thing. We had to find somebody to ask if we
could even enter the mosque and they didn’t really give us a clear answer,
so we kept our shoes on and figured we’d err on the side of diplomacy and
not offend anybody’s religious sensitivities. No sense in creating an
international incident. The architecture in this part of the world is distinctive,
though, and I look forward to exploring it some more.

So all in all, it’s going way better than I ever expected it to. The ship is
great. The people are great. The work load is great. Of course, the travel is
great. I wish you were all with me. If you can book a cruise, go for it. You
will not be disappointed. The Solstice is an upgrade for me in almost every
way. Certainly my playing venues are much better than they were on The
Constellation. Everywhere I play, they set me up with a high quality monitor,
a speaker that is pointing straight at me so I can hear myself. I have control
of the monitor volume. Then they patch me into a house system and the
A/V guys control that volume. It’s all very high quality and sounds excellent.
After playing for eight days, I’m starting to really tweak my sound.

I move around a lot. It’s not uncommon for me to play three venues in a
day. One of the most interesting is playing in the Grand Foyer. Every ship
has that central staircase in the middle of the ship. Our’s is beautiful. If you
can find the link on my web site, go to The Solstice site and take the virtual
tour. When I play the Grand Foyer, it’s like playing in a concert hall. There
are several decks I’m playing to, easily the largest crowds I’ve played to in
a long time. I tear it up.

The Oceanview Bar is way up on Deck 14 all the way aft. It’s an outside
bar on the very back of the ship, similar to the Seaside Cafe I played on the
The Constellation. However, I’m completely covered and I have my own little
protected spot and the house sound is excellent. Also, the bartender always
sends me a double Jack Daniels on the rocks early in my set, so I’m all for
playing the Oceanview Bar.

I’m writing this in the non-smoking crew bar on Deck 2. it’s called
“Mingles”. Cute, huh? I’m sitting in the corner with my Heineken and my
laptop and as I look around, I’m pretty sure I’m the only American in the
place and, it being around midnight, it’s fairly hopping. The vast majority
of people are Philipino. They dominate the pool table every night. The
bartender, Otto, is Hispanic. There’s a few Asians and the old, bald white
guy in the corner with the Heineken and the laptop. Life is good.

Sa incepem cu inceputul:
5. Primesc si viza pentru Bulgaria: Aliluia!!!
Prima zi: urcam in autocar. Toata lumea vesela, fericita Toata lumea are pasaportul? Fishuc, unde e pasaportul tau? -” La fishuca!”. Eu habar nu aveam Se pare insa ca i l-am pus inconstient in geanta mea. Hiuu!!!
Mi s-a dus inima in calcai.
Noi: – “ha ha ha, good joke.”
Soacra ne-a facut tort. Maine e ziua noastra. Facem 7 luni.

On the Aegean coast, 90 km from Izmir, is Kusadasi (koo-SHAH-dah-suh, Bird Island). A seaside resort

On the Aegean coast, 90 km from Izmir, is Kusadasi (koo-SHAH-dah-suh, Bird Island). A seaside resort town with a population of 150,000. Kusadasi gets its name from a small island, now connected to the mainland by a causeway, called Guvercinada (Pigeon Island). You can recognise it by the small stone fort which is the tiny island’s most prominent feature.

The town is a base for excursions to the ancient cities of Ephesus, Priene, Miletus and Didyma, and even inland to Aphrodisias and Hierapolis. Many Aegean curise ships stops at Kusadasi so that their passengers can take a tour to Ephesus and haggle for trinkets in Kuşadasi’s shops. Day trippers come over on the daily ferries from Greek Island Samos. The package-tour business has also affected this once-sleepy lovely fishing village, so that today it is littered by tourist attraction effect. The town center is all shops you may find and buy everything. The pleasant, easy atmosphere which made it popular in the 1970s is long gone, even though Kusadasi is still has some businesses serving the farmers, beekeepers and fishers who still make up an every-dwindling portion of the town’s population.

The natural port here may have been in use several centuries BC, and was probably known to the Byzantines, but modern Kusadasi’s history begins in Medieval times when Venetian and Genoese traders came here, calling it Scala Nuova . Two centuries after the Ottoman conquest in 1413, Okuz Mehmet Pasha, vizier and sometime grand vizier to sultans Ahmet I and Osman II, ordered the building of the Kaleici Mosque and hamam, the city walls, and the caravanserai, in order to improve Kusadasi’s prospects as a trading port with Europe and Africa.

Useful for exporting agricultural goods, Kusadasi was also an important defensive port along the Ottaman Aegean coast. In 1834 the little fortress on Guvercinada was restored and improved. It maintained its modest trade, farming and fishing economy and its quiet character until the tourism boom of the 1980s turned it into a brash resort.
