Quem acompanha músicas comumente do hinário americano ou a liturgia de suas igrejas, certamente deve ter ouvido alguma vez a canção It Is Well With My Soul. Mas o que poucos realmente sabem é o contexto por trás dessa bela música que é que ela retrata momentos da vida de seu autor. It Is Well With My Soul foi escrito por um advogado de Chicago, Horatio G. Spafford. À primeira vista deve-se pensar que para escrever uma canção de adoração intitulada ‘Tudo Está Bem em Minha Alma’ você tem que no mínimo ser um rico e bem-sucedido advogado de Chicago. Mas as palavras: “Quando tristezas agitarem como vagas do mar […] tudo está bem em minha alma” não foram escritas durante o período mais feliz da vida de Spafford. Pelo contrário, elas vieram de um homem que sofreu uma tragédia pessoal quase inimaginável.

Horatio G. Spafford e sua esposa, Anna, eram muito bem conhecidos na Chicago da década de 1860. E isso não apenas por causa da carreira de advogado e dos esforços nos negócios. Os Spafford eram também proeminentes apoiadores e amigos próximos de D. L. Moody, o famoso pregrador.

Em 1870, contudo, as coisas começaram a ir mal. O filho único dos Spafford morreu de escarlatina com quatro anos de idade. Um ano depois, foi o fogo em vez da febre que golpeou. Horatio investiu pesado em propriedades nas margens do Lago Michigan. Em 1871, cada um desses investimentos foi varrido pelo grande Incêndio de Chicago.
Ciente do impacto que esses desastres causaram na família, Horatio decidiu levar sua esposa e quatro filhas pra passar férias na Inglaterra. E não só eles precisavam descansar – D. L. Moody precisava de ajuda. Ele estava viajando pela Britânia em uma de suas grandes campanhas evangelísticas. Horatio e Anna planejaram se juntar a Moody no final de 1873. Assim, os Spafford viajaram para New York em Novembro, de onde seguiriam no vapor francês ‘Ville de Havre’ através do Atlântico.

Assim que iam subir a bordo, um negócio de última hora forçou Horatio a se atrasar. Sem querer arruinar as férias da família, Spafford persuadiu sua família a continuar a viagem como o planejado. Ele seguiria posteriormente. Decidido isto, Anna e suas quatro filhas navegaram para leste em direção a Europa enquanto Spafford retornou para oeste, para Chicago. Só nove dias mais tarde, Spafford recebeu um telegrama de sua esposa em Wales. Ele dizia: “Sobrevivi sozinha.”
No dia 2 de Novembro de 1873, o Ville de Havre colidiu com O Lochearn, uma embarcação inglesa. Ele afundou em apenas 12 minutos, ceifando a vida de 226 pessoas. Anna Spafford permaneceu bravamente no convés, com suas filhas Annie, Maggie, Bessie e Tanetta se agarrando desesperadamente a ela. Sua última lembrança foi de seu bebê sendo arrancado violentamente de seus braços pela força das águas.

Anna só escapou do destino de suas filhas por causa de uma prancha de madeira que flutuou sob seu corpo inconsciente e a manteve na superfície. Quando os sobreviventes do naufrágio foram resgatados, a primeira reação da Sra. Spafford foi de completo desespero. Então ela ouviu uma voz lhe dizendo: “Você foi poupada por um propósito.” E ela imediatamente se lembrou das palavras de um amigo: “É fácil ser agradecido e bom quando você tem tanto, mas cuidado pra não ser um amigo-de-tempo-bom de Deus.”

Ao ouvir a notícia terrível, Horatio Spafford embarcou no primeiro navio pra New York pra se juntar a sua esposa enlutada. Bertha Spafford (a quinta filha de Horatio e Anna, nascida depois) explicou que durante a viagem do seu pai, o capitão do navio o chamou para a sala de controle. “Um cálculo cuidadoso foi feito”, ele disse, “e eu creio que estamos agora passando pelo lugar onde o de Havre naufragou. A água tem três milhas (4,82 km) de profundidade.” Horatio então retornou à sua cabine e redigiu a letra desse grande hino.

As palavras que Spafford escreveu naquele dia vêm de 2 Reis 4:26. Elas ecoam a resposta da mulher sunamita à morte repentina de seu único filho. Embora nós saibamos que “sua alma estava em amargura”, ela ainda mantém seu “tudo está bem”. E a canção de Spafford revela um homem cuja confiança no Senhor era tão à prova de oscilações como a dela.
Sua adoração não depende apenas do que ele sente. “Qualquer que seja minha  porção”, ele diz, faça chuva ou faça sol, prazer ou dor, sucesso ou fracasso, “Tu me ensinaste a dizer: / Tudo está bem, tudo está bem em minha alma.”

O manuscrito original possui apenas quatro versos, mas a filha de Horatio afirma que o quarto verso foi adicionado depois, e que a linha final foi ligeiramente modificada. A melodia, escrita porPhilip Bliss, foi intitulada Villa du Havre, o mesmo nome do navio no qual ocorrera o acidente.

Após o naufrágio do Ville du Havre, Anna deu à luz mais duas flhas e um filho. Em 11 de fevereiro de 1880, seu único filho, também chamado Horatio, morreu com quatro anos de idade, por escarlatina (doença infecciosa causada por bactéria). Em agosto de 1881, os Spafford fundaram em Jerusalem uma sociedade utópica nomeada Colônia Americana. Membros da colônia, juntos com cristãos suecos que posteriormente se uniram a eles, iniciaram um trabalho filantrópico entre o povo de Jerusalém, independentemente de religião. Com isso ganharam a confiança de comunidades muçulmanas, judias e cristãs do local. Durante e logo após a Primeira Guerra Mundial, a Colônia Americana (localizada na área da frente oriental da guerra) teve um papel fundamental no apoio a estas comunidades, trabalhando em hospitais, orfanatos e preparando refeições, dentre outras obras de caridade. Spafford faleceu em 16 de outubro de 1888, por malária, tendo sido enterrado em Jerusalém.

Em It Is Well, o eu lírico se foca nele mesmo. Ele focaliza o que Deus já fez (Oh, bênção deste glorioso pensamento / Meu pecado … está pregado na cruz, e eu não o carrego mais) e o que Deus fará no futuro (Senhor, vem o dia quando minha fé será vista / A trombeta ressoará e o Senhor descerá). De fato, a adoração de Spafford nos traz de volta ao resultado final: ao fim do dia, venha o inferno ou o dilúvio, é “essa bendita segurança” que nos mantém firmes!

Algo interessante sobre a canção é que muitos cantores se lembram da história de It Is Well quando vão cantá-la!

what are you listening to?

i finished the newest donald miller book today. it is a really good read. throughout the read i was constantly challenged in how i’m living life. it’s stirred up a lot of things in my heart that i’m not sure what to do with but will be prayerfully processing.

the new kutless album is out. i’ve been giving it some serious listening time and will be sharing my thoughts on it soon. i’ll tell you right now that it is what i expected but also a bit different than i expected. i’d recommend the first track off of the cd, it is well, as a must purchase!

the rest of my week is going to be filled with working, weddings, and playing guitar. should be busy but fun!

Many times it feels when i fall away from GOD, there’s no way out to reach back to Him again. Even today as i was like no there’s no way at all to go to GOD, i got to hear this song (What Faith Can Do by Kutless) from Air1 Radio and it touched me, i do fail and fall still today and may or will even in future but i know my GOD is always waiting with His arms open wide for me and welcomes me, its more like i fail and i feel i can’t go to GOD again and that fear of facing Him will pull me behind and the devil planting seeds in my mind that i can’t reach out to GOD, but the reality? everyone fails, even the great King David failed, but whats the difference? he turned to GOD, may i turn to GOD with boldness and with no condemnation (for condemnation is from the devil) for i know Jesus has come to save a sinner like me, i failed yes i failed i’m humbled to know i’m helpless myself but with Jesus im clean as white as snow and my sins my past my failures my mistakes are all gone, through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of GOD I am saved!

Tim and Adam on stage at Higher Ground

Sure, we got a little soggy at times… but we had a lot of fun at the Higher Ground Music Festival in Winsted, Minnesota this past weekend!  Jeremy Camp, Third Day, Kutless, Pulse Plinko, and walleye-on-a-stick were just a few of the highlights.  And as always, Tim and I loved meeting new people who listen to The Pulse.  I’ll admit, it’s comforting to know I wasn’t the only one wearing a Pulse T-shirt who was crazy enough to stand in the rain to hear Phil Wickham play!

The musically diverse lineup for Night of Joy 2009, an immensely popular Christian music festival at Walt Disney World Resort, will include Dove Award-winning NEEDTOBREATHE, P.O.D., Jars of Clay, MercyMe, newsboys, Skillet, Flyleaf, Chris Tomlin, Kutless, Grits, Leeland, Superchick, Mandisa, Family Force 5, Francesca Battisteli, Revive, Josh Wilson, Above the Golden State and Abandon. The festivities will take place September 11-12, 2009, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  Night of Joy 2009 concerts will run between 7 PM and 12:15 AM each evening at four stages located throughout Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
