Ah, the lighthearted. That’s originally what I wanted this blog to be about: comedians, comedy. But it’s also MY blog so who knows, maybe I’ll talk about how finely mashed the mashed potatoes were at K&W today (I basically drank them). This shit can go anywhere. It’s crazy!!!! And I never use exclamation marks, so, you know.

I would like to talk about Peter Cook. My hero to top all heroes. I am aware of the fact that he died in 1995 but it bothers me that some feel that he died with the word “failure” on his proverbial tombstone.

I like to think that I know something about comedy, in that I’ve been watching or listening to comedians from this century and the last, and the one before that (Eddie Cantor to Jim Gaffigan) since 1996 (I was born in 1985) and only one man has left me in so many sentimental pieces. There’s an inherent sadness in his face, voice, and delivery that remind you/me of the “chance that was wasted” – Cole Porter. Here is a little sampling of all that I appreciate about Peter Cook.

The holiday season is starting, with its crowded malls, christmas decor and of course starting this Thursday the annual Christkindl Market. Yes it’s mostly for old German people and kids who have nothing better to do than be dragged to city hall on a frigid Saturday morning, but last year I checked it out and honestly thought it was pretty neat.  There are performers to see, trinkets to buy, junky food to eat. But most of all love how the Kitchener City Hall gets used by the community from time to time, and that its design and layout are great for these kinds of things.  December 3-6 @ Kitchener City Hall.

On November 24, 2009, Knowledge Workers Toronto held their monthly meetup at the Groundhog Pub.  I had originally planned on attending this meetup, but my plans changed at the last minute.  Thankfully, meetup organizer Connie Crosby tweeted throughout Michael Cheveldave’s presentation.  Michael is the Director, Business Development for Cognitive Edge Pte. Ltd.  He outlined how the human side of knowledge management makes sense of the world.

It is absolutely annoying that the Waterloo Public Square board now no longer posts events, instead posts a link to the events. So that now even if you’re at the Square, you need somehow access the internet before finding out what’s going on.

How does this make any sense? Why not let passers-by know what’s going on, as they pass by, instead of letting them know about a link they will forget about within the next two seconds?! Anyways, if you do want to know things that are going on, here is the link.

I haven’t posted in a while because life has been crazy. Also, my internet situation at home has been non-existant due to the death of my first laptop. Also, I am moving to Uptown Waterloo in December (adding to the craziness). This is exciting as I will be within walking distance to many of the places I love in KW and I won’t have to deal with shady people living above me who own a large and noisy dog and insist on vacuuming at 11pm every night. I really hope to write about the crazy adventure that has been finding a place to live in KW. Hopefully I’ll find the time some point soon. In the meantime, the Wonders of Winter: A Festival of Lights, starts this Saturday in Waterloo Park. I don’t think I’ll go until there’s some snow, because it’s not the same without snow, but this is the one event that makes me feel like the snow, slush, shoveling, and slipping all over the ice are all worth it, because snow is pretty and magical.

Dalam tulisan ini, kita akan mempelajari senyawa asam dan basa, ciri-ciri senyawa asam dan basa, serta metode untuk membedakan asam dan basa. Selain itu, kita akan mempelajari tingkat keasaman larutan (pH), menghitung pH larutan asam dan basa, serta menghitung pH larutan hasil reaksi asam dan basa. Selain menghitung  pH larutan, kita juga akan mempelajari beberapa konsep teori asam-basa serta berbagai jenis oksida yang dapat menghasilkan senyawa asam dan basa saat dilarutkan di dalam air.

Saat kita masuk ke dapur atau kamar mandi, kita dapat menemukan berbagai macam senyawa asam dan basa. Saat kita membuka lemari pendingin, kita dapat menemukan minuman ringan (soft drink) yang banyak mengandung asam karbonat. Cuka merupakan asam, sedangkan soda kue merupakan basa. Pada bak tempat cucian, kita menemukan amonia dan bahan pencuci lainnya, yang merupakan basa. Di dalam kotak obat, kita menemukan obat aspirin, suatu senyawa asam, dan berbagai jenis antasida yang merupakan senyawa basa. Kehidupan kita sehari-hari dipenuhi oleh asam dan basa.

Beberapa sifat asam yang dapat diamati di sekeliling kita, antara lain :

1. Berasa masam (ingat, di laboratorium, kita mengujinya, bukan mencicipinya)
2. Terasa sangat pedih bila terkena kulit (korosif)
3. Bereaksi dengan logam-logam tertentu (lihat : Elektrokimia I : Penyetaraan Reaksi Redoks dan Sel Volta) menghasilkan gas hidrogen
4. Bereaksi dengan batu kapur (CaCO₃) dan soda kue (NaHCO₃) menghasilkan gas karbon dioksida
5. Bereaksi dengan kertas lakmus dan mengubah lakmus biru menjadi merah

Beberapa sifat basa yang dapat diamati di sekeliling kita, antara lain :

1. Berasa pahit (ingat, di laboratorium, kita mengujinya, bukan mencicipinya)
2. Terasa licin di kulit
3. Bereaksi dengan minyak dan lemak
4. Bereaksi dengan kertas lakmus dan mengubah lakmus merah menjadi biru
5. Bereaksi dengan asam menghasilkan garam dan air

Sejumlah asam dan basa yang dapat kita temukan di dalam kehidupan sehari-hari dapat dilihat pada tabel di bawah ini :

Saat kita melihat tabel di atas, kita menemukan fakta bahwa semua asam mengandung ion hidrogen (ion H⁺), sedangkan kebanyakan basa mengandung ion OH^-. Dua teori dasar yang dapat digunakan untuk menjelaskan konsep asam-basa secara mikroskopis adalah sebagai berikut :

1. Teori Asam-Basa Arrhenius

Teori ini digunakan dalam larutan dengan air sebagai pelarut. Teori ini merupakan teori asam-basa modern yang pertama kali berkembang. Menurut teori ini, asam adalah suatu bahan yang apabila dilarutkan di dalam air, menghasilkan ion H⁺ (ion hidrogen). Sebaliknya, basa adalah suatu bahan yang apabila dilarutkan di dalam air, menghasilkan ion OH^- (ion hidroksida).

HCl_(g) merupakan asam Arrhenius, sebab pada saat larut di dalam air, gas tersebut akan terionisasi (membentuk ion) dengan melepaskan ion H⁺.

HCl_(g) +  H₂O_(l) →  HCl_(aq) →  H⁺_(aq) +  Cl^-_(aq)

Menurut teori Arrhenius, natrium hidroksida diklasifikasikan ke dalam kelompok basa, sebab pada saat larut, akan dihasilkan ion hidroksida.

NaOH_(s) +  H₂O_(l) →  NaOH_(aq) →  Na⁺_(aq) +  OH^-_(aq)

Arrhenius juga mengelompokkan reaksi antara asam dan basa sebagai reaksi netralisasi, sebab jika kita mencampurkan suatu larutan asam dengan suatu larutan basa, kita akan mendapatkan larutan netral yang terdiri atas air dan garam.

HCl_(aq) +  NaOH_(aq) →  H₂O_(l) +  NaCl_(aq)

H⁺_(aq) +  Cl^-_(aq) +  Na⁺_(aq) +  OH^-_(aq) →  H₂O_(l) +  Na⁺_(aq) +  Cl^-_(aq)

(Air terbentuk dari penggabungan ion hidrogen dan ion hidroksida; Persamaan ion bersih sama untuk semua reaksi asam-basa Arrhenius, yaitu H⁺_(aq) + OH^-_(aq) →  H₂O_(l).

Teori ini tetap digunakan, walaupun jarang. Sama seperti teori-teori lain, teori ini memiliki beberapa keterbatasan. Sebagai contoh, reaksi fasa gas antara gas amonia dan gas hidrogen klorida dalam wadah tertutup, berlangsung melalui persamaan reaksi berikut :

NH_3(g) +  HCl_(g) →  NH₄⁺ + Cl^- →  NH₄Cl_(s)

Dua gas yang tidak berwarna bercampur, dan kemudian menghasilkan padatan putih amonium klorida. Ion di dalam persamaan reaksi ini menunjukkan peristiwa yang sesungguhnya terjadi; HCl memberikan ion H⁺-nya kepada amonia. Pada dasarnya ini merupakan hal yang sama seperti yang terjadi pada reaksi HCl dengan NaOH. Sebaliknya, reaksi yang melibatkan amonia tidak dapat dikelompokkan ke dalam reaksi asam-basa, sebab reaksi tersebut tidak terjadi di dalam air dan tidak melibatkan ion hidroksida. Oleh karena itu, untuk menerangkan proses yang terjadi pada amonia, suatu teori asam-basa baru dikembangkan, yaitu teori asam-basa Bronsted-Lowry.

2.Teori Asam-Basa Bronsted-Lowry

Teori ini menggunakan konsep memberi dan menerima ion hidrogen. Teori Bronsted-Lowry berusaha mengatasi keterbatasan teori Arrhenius dengan mendefinisikan asam sebagai penyumbang (donor) proton (ion H⁺) dan basa sebagai penerima (akseptor) proton (ion H⁺).  Basa menerima ion H⁺ dengan melengkapi satu pasang elektron bebas untuk membentuk ikatan kovalen koordinasi (datif) (lihat : Ikatan Kimia dan Tata Nama Senyawa Kimia).

Pada reaksi antara NH₃ dengan HCl, spesi HCl bertindak sebagai pemberi proton, atau sebagai asam. Sedangkan amonia sebagai penerima proton atau sebagai basa. Amonia memiliki pasangan elektron bebas yang tidak berikatan yang dapat digunakan untuk membentuk ikatan kovalen koordinasi (datif).

Menurut teori asam-basa Arrhenius, reaksi asam-basa merupakan reaksi netralisasi. Namun, menurut teori asam-basa Bronsted-Lowry, reaksi asam-basa merupakan reaksi kompetisi untuk menangkap proton. Sebagai contoh, berikut adalah reaksi amonia dengan air :

HN_3)g) +  H₂O_(l) →  NH₄OH_(aq) <—>  NH₄⁺_(aq) +  OH^-_(aq)

Amonia merupakan basa (menangkap proton), sedangkan air merupakan asam (memberikan proton) pada reaksi maju (dari kiri ke kanan). Tetapi, pada reaksi balik (dari kanan ke kiri), ion amonium (NH₄⁺) adalah asam, dan ion hidroksida (OH^-) adalah basa. Jika keasaman air lebih kuat dari ion amonium, maka konsentrasi ion amonium dan ion hidroksida relatif besar pada saat kesetimbangan. Namun, sebaliknya, jika ion amonium lebih asam dibandingkan air, maka jumlah amonia menjadi jauh lebih banyak dibandingkan ion amonium pada saat kesetimbangan.

Bronsted-Lowry mengatakan bahwa jika suatu asam bereaksi dengan suatu basa, pasangan asam-basa konyugasi dapat terbentuk. Pasangan asam-basa konyugasi dibedakan oleh satu buah ion H⁺. Pada contoh di atas, NH₃ adalah suatu basa, dan NH₄⁺ adalah asam konyugasinya. Di sisi lain, H₂O adalah suatu asam, dan ion OH^- adalah basa konyugasinya. Pada reaksi di atas, ion OH^- merupakan basa kuat, dan amonia merupakan basa lemah. Akibatnya, kesetimbangan cenderung bergeser ke kiri. Dengan demikian, pada kesetimbangan tidak terdapat banyak ion hidroksida.

Selanjutnya kita akan mempelajari konsep asam-basa kuat-lemah. Namun demikian, yang penting untuk diingat, bahwa kekuatan asam-basa tidak sama dengan konsentrasi. Kekuatan merujuk pada jumlah ionisasi atau penguraian yang terjadi pada asam-basa. Konsentrasi merujuk pada jumlah asam-basa yang dimiliki di dalam larutan.

Asam Kuat

Pada saat kita melarutkan gas hidrogen klorida ke dalam air, HCl tersebut akan bereaksi dengan molekul air dan memberikan sebuah proton (ion H⁺) kepada molekul air.

HCl_(g) +  H₂O_(l) →    H₃O⁺_(aq) +  Cl^-_(aq)

Ion H₃O⁺ disebut ion hidronium. Reaksi ini terjadi hingga kondisi sempurna, yang berarti bahwa reaktan tetap berubah menjadi produk sampai semua habis digunakan. Pada kasus ini, semua HCl terionisasi sempurna menjadi ion H₃O⁺ dan ion Cl^-, sehingga tidak ada lagi HCl-nya. Asam seperti HCl, yang terionisasi 100% di dalam air, disebut asam kuat. Sebagai catatan, bahwa air disini, bertindak sebagai basa, menerima proton dari hidrogen klorida.

Asam kuat terionisasi sempurna, maka mudah untuk menghitung konsentrasi ion hidronium dan ion klorida di dalam larutan jika kita mengetahui konsentrasi awal asam kuat tersebut. Sebagai contoh, misalkan kita melarutkan gas HCl 0,1 mol ke dalam satu liter air. Dengan demikian, konsentrasi HCl mula-mula adalah 0,1 mol/L (0,1 M). Kita dapat menuliskan konsentrasi HCl 0,1 M dengan lambang [HCl] = 0,1 M. Senyawa HCl terionisasi sempurna sesuai dengan persamaan reaksi berikut :

HCl_(g) +  H₂O_(l) →    H₃O⁺_(aq) +  Cl^-_(aq)

Berdasarkan persamaan reaksi di atas, terlihat bahwa setiap mol HCl yang terionisasi, akan menghasilkan satu mol ion H₃O⁺ dan satu ion mol Cl^-. Dengan demikian, konsentrasi ion dalam larutan HCl 0,1 M adalah :

[H₃O⁺] = 0,1 M

[Cl^-] = 0,1 M

Berikut adalah daftar asam kuat yang paling umum kita temukan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari :

Asam sulfat disebut pula sebagai asam diprotik, sebab asam tersebut dapat memberikan dua proton, tetapi hanya pada ionisasi pertama yang terjadi 100% secara sempurna. Asam-asam lain yang ditampilkan dalam tabel merupakan asam monoprotik, sebab hanya memberikan satu proton.

Basa Kuat

Menghitung konsentrasi ion hidroksida sangat mudah. Sebagai contoh, kita memiliki 1,5 mol/L (1,5 M) larutan NaOH. Larutan natrium hidroksida tersebut akan terdisosiasi (pecah/terurai) sempurna menjadi ion-ion.

NaOH_(aq) →  Na⁺_(aq) +  OH^-_(aq)

Konsentrasi ion yang dihasilkan masing-masing 1,5 M.

Asam Lemah

Saat kita melarutkan asam asetat (CH₃COOH) ke dalam air, yang akan terjadi adalah asam tersebut akan bereaksi dengan molekul-molekul air, memberikan sebuah proton dan membentuk ion hidronium (ion H₃O⁺). Dalam hal ini, terjadi kesetimbangan, di mana kita masih tetap memiliki sejumlah asam asetat yang tidak terionisasi (pada reaksi sempurna, irreversible [lihat : Kesetimbangan Kimia], seluruh reaktan digunakan untuk membentuk produk). Pada sistem kesetimbangan asam lemah, ion-ion berkesetimbangan dengan molekul asam.

Reaksi yang terjadi antara asam asetat dengan air adalah sebagai berikut :

CH₃COOH_(aq) +  H₂O_(l) <—>  CH₃COO^-_(aq) +  H₃O⁺_(aq)

Asam asetat yang ditambahkan ke dalam air akan terionisasi sebagian. Pada reaksi kesetimbangan ini, hanya sekitar 5% asam asetat yang terionisasi. Sementara 95% lainnya masih dalam bentuk molekul. Jumlah ion hidronium (ion H₃O⁺) yang diperoleh dalam larutan asam yang tidak terionisasi sempurna jauh lebih sedikit dibandingkan yang diperoleh dari asam kuat. Asam yang hanya terionisasi sebagian disebut asam lemah.

Menghitung konsentrasi ion hidronium pada asam lemah tidak sama dengan menghitung pada larutan asam kuat, sebab tidak semua asam lemah yang larut dapat terionisasi. Untuk menghitung konsentrasi ion hidronium, kita harus menggunakan konstanta kesetimbangan untuk asam lemahnya (lihat : Kesetimbangan Kimia). Untuk larutan asam lemah, kita menggunakan konstanta kesetimbangan asam lemah, K_a­. Secara umum :

HA_(aq) +  H₂O_(l) <—>  H₃O⁺_(aq) +  A^-_(aq)

Nilai K_a untuk asam lemah tersebut adalah :

K_a =  {[H₃O⁺][A^-]} / [HA]

Sebagai catatan, [HA] menunjukkan konsentrasi molar HA pada kesetimbangan, bukan konsentrasi awal. Konsentrasi air tidak ditunjukkan pada persamaan K_a, sebab konsentrasi air ([H₂O]) merupakan konstanta yang akan tergabung dengan K_a.

Berikut ini adalah tabel beberapa contoh asam lemah yang sering dijumpai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari beserta nilai K_a masing-masing asam lemah :

Sekarang kita kembali ke kesetimbangan asam asetat. Nilai K_a untuk asam asetat adalah 1,8 x 10^-5. Persamaan K_a ionisasi asam asetat adalah sebagai berikut :

K_a =  1,8 x 10^-5 = {[H₃O⁺][CH₃COO^-]} / [CH₃COOH]

Kita dapat menggunakan nilai K_a ini untuk menghitung konsentrasi ion hidronium. Misalkan diberikan larutan asam asetat 2 M. Kita ketahui bahwa konsentrasi awal asam asetat tersebut adalah 2 M. Kita juga mengetahui bahwa sebagian kecil asam asetat tersebut telah terionisasi, menghasilkan sedikit ion hidronium dan ion asetat. Melalui persamaan reaksi kesetimbangan asam asetat, terlihat bahwa untuk setiap ion hidronium yang terbentuk, akan disertai pula pembentukan ion asetat. Akibatnya, konsentrasi kedua ion tersebut sama. Kita dapat memisalkan nilai [H₃O⁺] dan [CH₃COO^-] masing-masing sebesar x M.

[H₃O⁺] = [CH₃COO^-] = x M

Dengan demikian, untuk menghasilkan sebanyak x M ion hidronium dan ion asetat, dibutuhkan asam asetat yang terionisasi sebanyak x M pula. Sehingga, kita dapat menuliskan jumlah asam asetat yang tersisa pada saat kesetimbangan sebagai jumlah asam asetat mula-mula, 2 M, dikurangi dengan yang mengalami ionisasi, sebesar x M.

[CH₃COOH] = (2 – x) M

Pada kondisi umum, kita dapat menganggap nilai x sangat kecil dibandingkan dengan konsentrasi asam lemah mula-mula. Jadi, kita dapat mengatakan bahwa nilai 2 – x mendekati 2. Ini berarti bahwa kita dapat sering menganggap konsentrasi asam lemah pada saat kesetimbangan sama dengan konsentrasi mula-mulanya. Persamaan konstanta kesetimbangan asam lemah sekarang dapat dituliskan sebagai berikut :

K_a = 1,8 x 10^-5 = {(x)(x)} / (2 – x) = {(x)(x) / (2)}

1,8 x 10^-5 = (x)² / 2

Selanjutnya kita dapat menentukan nilai x, yang sama dengan nilai [H₃O⁺].

x² = 1,8 x 10^-5 x 2

x = (1,8 x 10^-5 x 2)^1/2 =  6 x 10^-3

[H₃O⁺] = 6 x 10^-3 M

Salah satu cara untuk membedakan antara asam kuat dengan asam lemah adalah dengan mencari nilai konstanta ionisasi asam (K_a). Jika asamnya memiliki nilai K_a, berarti asam lemah. Jika tidak, berarti asam kuat.

Basa Lemah

Basa lemah juga bereaksi dengan air untuk mencapai sistem kesetimbangan. Amonia merupakan salah satu basa lemah. Amonia dapat bereaksi dengan air untuk membentuk ion amonium dan ion hidroksida.

NH_3(g) +  H₂O_(l) <—>  NH₄⁺_(aq) +  OH^-_(aq)

Seperti halnya asam lemah, basa lemah hanya terionisasi sebagian. Konstanta kesetimbangan basa lemah adalah K_b. Kita menggunakannya sama persis seperti pada saat kita menggunakan K_a (lihat pembahasan Asam Lemah di atas). Yang dicari pada basa lemah adalah [OH^-]-nya.

Berikut ini adalah tabel beberapa contoh basa lemah yang sering dijumpai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari beserta nilai K_b masing-masing basa lemah :

Ketika asam asetat bereaksi dengan air, air bertindak sebagai basa (atau sebagai akseptor proton). Namun, pada saat air bereaksi dengan amonia, air bertindak sebagai asam (atau sebagai donor proton). Ternyata, air dapat bertindak sebagai asam maupun sebagai basa, tergantung bereaksi dengan zat apa. Zat yang dapat bertindak sebagai asam maupun sebagai basa disebut amfoterik. Jika kita mencampurkan air dengan asam, air bertindak sebagai basa. Begitu pula sebaliknya, saat mencampurkan air dengan basa, air bertindak sebagai asam.

Namun, dapatkah air bereaksi dengan dirinya sendiri? Ternyata, ya. Air dapat bereaksi dengan dirinya sendiri. Dua molekul air dapat saling bereaksi, dengan cara yang satu mendonorkan satu proton dan yang lain menerimanya. Reaksi yang terjadi adalah sebagai berikut :

H₂O_(l) +  H₂O_(l) <—>  H₃O⁺_(aq) +  OH^-_(aq)

Reaksi tersebut merupakan reaksi kesetimbangan (lihat : kesetimbangan Kimia). Konstanta kesetimbangan yang dimodifikasi disebut K_w (yang menunjukkan konstanta disosiasi air). W adalah water = air. Nilai K_w adalah 1,0 x 10^-14 dan mengikuti persamaan berikut :

1,0 x 10^-14 = K_w = [H₃O⁺][OH^-]

Pada air murni, persamaan reaksi ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai [H₃O⁺] sama dengan [OH^-]. Dengan demikian, nilai [H₃O⁺] = [OH^-] = 1 x 10^-7 M. Nilai K_w selalu konstan (asalkan suhu tidak berubah). Dengan nilai ini, kita dapat mengubah [H₃O⁺] menjadi [OH^-], dan sebaliknya, pada berbagai macam larutan (dengan pelarut air), tidak hanya pada air murni. Pada larutan (dengan pelarut air), konsentrasi ion hidronium dan ion hidroksida jarang memiliki nilai yang sama. Namun, dengan mengetahui konsentrasi salah satu ion, dan dengan nilai K_w, kita dapat menentukan konsentrasi ion lainnya.

Kembali kita membahas larutan 2 M asam asetat di atas. Kita mendapatkan [H₃O⁺] sama dengan 6 x 10^-3 M. Dengan demikian, kita memiliki cara untuk menghitung [OH^-] di dalam larutan tersebut dengan menggunakan rumus K_w.

K_w =  1,0 x 10^-14 = [H₃O⁺][OH^-]

1,0 x 10^-14 =  (6 x 10^-3) [OH^-]

[OH^-]  =  1,0 x 10^-14 / 6 x 10^-3 =  1,7 x 10^-12 M

Besarnya tingkat keasaman suatu larutan tergantung pada konsentrasi ion hidronium di dalam larutan. Semakin asam suatu larutan, semakin besar konsentrasi ion hidronium di dalam larutan tersebut. Dengan kata lain, larutan dengan [H₃O⁺] sama dengan 1,0 x 10^-2 M lebih asam daripada larutan dengan [H₃O⁺] yang sama dengan 1,0 x 10^-7 M. Oleh karena konsentrasi ion hidronium mupun ion hidroksida umumnya sangat kecil, Sores Sorensen, pada tahun 1909, mengajukan cara praktis untuk menentukan tingkat keasaman larutan, yaitu dengan skala pH. Skala pH adalah skala yang berdasarkan [H₃O⁺], dikembangkan untuk mempermudah penentuan tingkat keasaman larutan. Singkat kata, pH menunjukkan tingkat keasaman relatif suatu larutan. pH didefinisikan sebagai minus logaritma (-log) [H₃O⁺]. Secara matematis, rumus pH dapat dituliskan dalam persamaan berikut :

pH = – log [H₃O⁺]

Berdasarkan konstanta disosiasi air (K_w), nilai [H₃O⁺] pada air murni sama dengan 1,0 x 10^-7 M. Dengan menggunakan persamaan matematika ini, kita dapat menghitung pH air.

pH = – log [H₃O⁺]

pH = – log (1,0 x 10^-7)

pH = – (-7)

pH = 7

Jadi, pH air sama dengan 7. Para kimiawan menyebut titik ini ( pH = 7) pada skala pH sebagai posisi netral. Suatu larutan disebut asam jika memiliki [H₃O⁺] lebih besar dari air, sehingga pHnya lebih kecil dari 7. Sebaliknya, suatu larutan disebut basa jika memiliki [H₃O⁺] lebih kecil dari air, sehingga pHnya lebih besar dari 7.

Larutan Asam : [H₃O⁺] > 1,0 x 10^-7 M ; pH < 7

Larutan Basa : [H₃O⁺] <1,0 x 10^-7 M ; pH > 7

Larutan Netral : [H₃O⁺] = 1,0 x 10^-7 M ; pH = 7

Skala pH pada dasarnya tidak ada batasnya. Kita dapat saja memiliki larutan dengan pH kurang dari nol (misal : larutan HCl 10 M, memiliki pH = -1). Namun demikian, menurut perjanjian, batas pH adalah dari nol (0) hingga 14, yang digunakan sebagai batas pH asam lemah dan basa lemah, dan juga untuk larutan encer asam kuat dan basa kuat.

Nilai [H₃O⁺] dari larutan asam asetat 2 M (lihat pembahasan Asam Lemah di atas) adalah 6 x 10^-3 M. Larutan tersebut termasuk asam. pH larutan tersebut dapat dihitung dengan cara sebagai berikut :

pH = – log [H₃O⁺]

pH = – log (6 x 10^-3)

pH = – (-2,22)

pH = 2,2

Persamaan lain, yang disebut pOH, dapat digunakan untuk menentukan pH suatu larutan. Nilai pOH sama dengan logaritma negatif dari [OH^-]. Kita dapat menghitung nilai pOH suatu larutan sama seperti pada saat menghitung pH dengan menggunakan logaritma negatif dari konsentrasi ion hidroksida. Jika kita menggunakan K_w dan bila kedua sisi logaritma dinegatifkan, maka diperoleh :

K_w =  1,0 x 10^-14 = [H₃O⁺][OH^-]

- log K_w =  – log (1,0 x 10^-14) = – log {[H₃O⁺][OH^-]}

pK_w =  14  = pH + pOH

Persamaan pH + pOH = 14 mempermudah perhitungan pOH menjadi pH. Seperti halnya kita mengubah [H₃O⁺] ke pH, kita juga dapat melakukan perhitungan pH ke [H₃O⁺]. Untuk itu, kita menggunakan persamaan antilog, sebagai berikut :

[H₃O⁺] = 10^-pH

Misalkan, darah manusia memiliki pH sekitar 7,3. Hal ini berarti, konsentrasi ion hidronium dalam darah manusia adalah sekitar 10^-7,3 = 5,01 x 10^-8 M. Dengan cara yang sama, kita dapat menghitung [OH^-] dari pOH.

Berikut ini adalah tabel pH beberapa zat yang kita jumpai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari :

Indikator adalah zat (pewarna organik) yang mengalami perubahan warna karena keberadaan asam atau basa. Salah satu contoh ekstrak tanaman yang dijadikan sebagai indikator asam-basa adalah kembang bokor. Jika tanaman ini tumbuh di tanah masam, bunganya akan berwarna merah muda. Sebaliknya, jika tanaman ini tumbuh di tanah alkalin (basa), bunganya akan berwarna biru. Selain kembang bokor, bahan lain yang telah lama dikenal sebagai indikator asam-basa yang baik adalah kubis merah. Ekstrak kubis merah dapat digunakan untuk menguji keasaman zat-zat. Saat dicampur dengan asam, cairan tersebut berubah menjadi merah muda. Sedangkan, saat dicampur dengan basa, cairan tersebut berubah menjadi hijau.

Di dalam ilmu kimia, indikator digunakan untuk menguji keberadaan asam atau basa. Para kimiawan memiliki banyak indikator yang akan berubah pada perubahan kecil pH. Dua indikator yang paling banyak digunakan adalah kertas lakmus dan fenolftalein.

Kertas Lakmus

Lakmus adalah suatu zat yang diekstrak dari sejenis lumut kerak dan diserap ke dalam kertas berpori­. Lumut kerak adalah tanaman yang ditemukan di Belanda, yang terdiri atas ganggang dan jamur yang hidup bersama dan saling menguntungkan satu sama lainnya. Terdapat tiga jenis kertas lakmus, yaitu lakmus merah, lakmus biru, dan lakmus netral. Kertas lakmus merah digunakan untuk menguji basa, dan kertas lakmus biru digunakan untuk menguji asam. Sementara itu, kertas lakmus netral digunakan untuk menguji keduanya. Jika larutan bersifat asam, kertas lakmus netral dan biru akan berubah menjadi merah. Jika larutan bersifat basa, kertas lakmus merah dan netral berubah menjadi biru. Kertas lakmus adalah alat uji yang sangat bagus dan cepat untuk mendeteksi asam dan basa.

Fenolftalein

Fenolftalein merupakan indikator lain yang biasa digunakan. Hingga beberapa tahun yang lalu, fenolftalein digunakan sebagai zat aktif pada obat pencahar. Fenolftalein jernih dan tidak berwarna di dalam larutan asam dan akan berwarna merah muda di dalam larutan basa. Indikator ini biasanya digunakan dalam proses titrasi, yaitu proses penentuan konsentrasi asam atau basa yang tidak diketahui berdasarkan reaksi dengan basa atau asam yang telah diketahui konsentrasinya.

Sebagai contoh, misalkan kita ingin menentukan konsentrasi molar larutan HCl yang belum diketahui. Mula-mula, kita masukkan larutan HCl tersebut dengan volume yang telah diketahui (misalkan digunakan 25 mililiter yang diukur dengan tepat menggunakan pipet) ke dalam labu erlenmeyer dan kemudian tambahkan beberapa tetes indikator fenolftalein (disingkat pp). Oleh karena kita menambahkan indikator pp ke dalam larutan asam, larutan tersebut tetap jernih dan tidak berwarna. Selanjutnya, kita menambahkan sedikit demi sedikit larutan standar natrium hidroksida (NaOH) yang telah diketahui konsentrasinya (misalkan kita gunakan larutan NaOH 0,10 M) dengan buret. Larutan basa terus ditambahkan sehingga larutan yang dititrasi berubah menjadi merah muda. Kita menyebut kondisi ini sebagai titik akhir titrasi, titik saat asam secara tepat ternetralisasi oleh basa.

Dalam percobaan di atas, dimisalkan, diperlukan sebanyak 35,50 mililiter larutan NaOH 0,10 M untuk bereaksi hingga titik akhir titrasi dengan 25 mililiter larutan HCl tercapai. Reaksi yang terjadi adalah sebagai berikut :

HCl_(aq) +  NaOH_(aq) →  NaCl_(aq) +  H₂O_(l)

Dari persamaan reaksi setara di atas, kita dapat melihat bahwa perbandingan mol antara asam dan basa adalah 1 :  1. Hal ini berarti, jika mol basa yang dibutuhkan dapat dihitung, kita juga dapat mengetahui berapa mol HCl yang ada. Mengetahui volume larutan asam dapat membantu kita menghitung molaritas asam tersebut .

Mol NaOH  =  V x M  =  0,0355 L  x  0,10 M  = 0,00335 mol

Mol HCl  =  mol NaOH  =  0,00335 mol

Volume HCl  =  0,025 L

Konsentrasi HCl  =  mol / volume  =  0,00335 mol /  0,025 L  =  0,142 M

Titrasi suatu basa dengan suatu larutan standar asam (larutan yang telah diketahui konsentrasinya) dapat dihitung dengan cara yang persis sama dengan cara di atas, kecuali pada titik akhir titrasi, warna merah muda menjadi hilang.

Saat kita pergi ke toko obat atau apotik, kita menemukan berbagai jenis obat antasida dari rak ke rak. Antasida adalah salah satu terapan dari ilmu kimia asam-basa.

Lambung memproduksi asam hidroklorat (HCl) untuk mengaktifkan enzim-enzim tertentu (biokatalisator) dalam proses pencernaan. Akan tetapi, kadang-kadang, lambung juga memproduksi terlalu banyak asam, atau asamnya naik sampai kerongkongan (menuju ke pembakaran jantung). Dengan demikian, kelebihan asam lambung tersebut perlu dinetralkan dengan suatu basa. Formulasi basa yang biasa dijual untuk menetralkan asam ini disebut antasida. Antasida mengandung senyawa-senyawa berikut sebagai bahan aktif :

1. Bikarbonat (NaHCO₃ dan KHCO₃)
2. Karbonat (CaCO₃ dan MgCO₃)
3. Hidroksida (Al(OH)₃ dan Mg(OH)₂)

Mencoba memilih antasida “terbaik” untuk digunakan sewaktu-waktu dapat menyulitkan. Tentu saja harga menjadi salah satu faktor. Namun, sifat kimia dari basa juga menimbulkan masalah. Sebagai contoh, seseorang yang menderita tekanan darah tinggi (hipertensi), hendaknya menghindari antasida yang mengandung natruim bikarbonat, karena ion natrium cenderung meningkatkan tekanan darah. Sebaliknya, seseorang yang ingin menjaga dan mencegah hilangnya kalsium dari tulang (osteoporosis), cenderung memilih antasida yang mengandung kalsium karbonat. Namun, kalsium karbonat dan aluminium hidroksida dapat menyebabkan sembelit bila dosis penggunannya berlebihan. Di sisi lain, penggunaan magnesium karbonat dan magnesium hidroksida dosis tinggi dapat berguna sebagai pencahar. Memilih antasida benar-benar memerlukan banyak pertimbangan.

Asam Diprotik dan Poliprotik

Pada reaksi ionisasi asam diprotik (melepaskan 2 ion hidronium) maupun asam poliprotik (melepaskan lebih dari 2 ion hidronium), terjadi pelepasan ion hidronium secara bertahap. Dengan demikian, asam tersebut memiliki beberapa nilai K_a yang berbeda. Sebagai contoh :

H₂CO_3(aq) <—>  HCO₃^-_(aq) +  H⁺_(aq)

K_a1 =  {[H⁺][HCO₃^-]} / [H₂CO₃]

HCO₃^-_(aq) <—> CO₃^2-_(aq) +  H⁺_(aq)

K_a2 =  {[H⁺][CO₃^2-]} / [HCO₃^-]

Secara umum, nilai K_a1 suatu asam poliprotik selalu lebih besar dibandingkan nilai K_a tahap-tahap berikutnya. Berikut ini adalah tabel beberapa contoh asam poliprotik yang sering dijumpai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari beserta nilai K_a masing-masing asam poliprotik :

Selain menggunakan konsep asam-basa Arrhenius maupun Bronsted-Lowry, sifat asam-basa suatu senyawa juga dapat diterangkan dengan konsep asam-basa Lewis. Pada tahun 1932, seorang kimiawan berkebangsaan Amerika, G. N. Lewis, mendefinisikan basa Lewis sebagai zat yang dapat mendonorkan pasangan elektron. Sedangkan asam Lewis didefinisikan sebagai zat yang dapat menerima pasangan elektron bebas. Lewis mendefinisikan asam-basa berdasarkan peristiwa donor-akseptor pasangan elektron.

Sebagai contoh, pada proses protonasi amonia, NH₃ berperan sebagai basa Lewis (mendonorkan pasangan elektron). Sebaliknya ion H⁺ berperan sebagai asam Lewis (menerima pasangan elektron). Ikatan kimia yang terjadi adalah ikatan kovalen koordinasi (lihat : Ikatan Kimia dan Tata Nama Senyawa Kimia). Contoh lain adalah reaksi antara BF₃ dengan NH₃ membentuk senyawa NH₃BF₃. Dalam reaksi ini, NH₃ bertindak sebagai basa Lewis, sedangkan BF₃ sebagai asam Lewis. Teori asam-basa Lewis berlaku baik di sistem pelarut berair, pelarut bukan air, bahkan tanpa pelarut sekalipun (sistem gas).

Ag⁺_(aq) +  2 NH_3(aq) <—>  Ag(NH₃)₂⁺_(aq)

Cd⁴⁺_(aq) +  4 I^-_(aq) <—>  CdI₄^2-_(aq)

Ni_(s) +  4 CO_(g) <—>  Ni(CO­)_4(g)

I am exhausted from all of the anxiety from the day. I can’t imagine how Brian feels.  Except for tired because I am pretty sure he is conked out on the couch right now.

Brian found out that his new territory extends from North Charlotte to Boone. And he also found out that his boss is requiring him to work out of the Hickory office 2 days this week and he is supposed to be there at 7:30 AM. Hickory is an hour away!

Hopefully things will workout okay, but I am worried about Brian. I want us both to be happy with what we re working at each day. And I feel very unsettled right now.

I did take a break from all of the anxiety to go have dinner with my Pawpaw. It was great. I missed dinner last week so I was ready for a little quality time. We met at K&W to eat so he did not have to go home and cook after working all day. We both ate for under $12. How great is that?

Cafeteria food is not my fave because I have a tendency to be a picky eater at places like that. I am hesitant to get the veggies because I doubt that I will like them. Usually when we eat at a cafeteria we split some fried chicken and mashed potatoes, but not tonight.

Tonight I had 2 fried whiting filets with tartar sauce. It was either this or baked spaghetti for me. And I had a side salad with ranch dressing on the side.

The ranch was soooo good on the salad. I only ended up using a tbsp or so since I dipped my fork in the dressing rather than dumping it on the salad. Other than that I ate it all. I ate both filets with all of the tartar sauce and all of the salad. It was all very tasty.

The conversation was great. I had a great time hearing about Pawpaw’s week and making sure he is doing alright. Plus I got to tell on my Dad on a story that he left out a few details (i.e. thinking he broke his truck while trying to pull some plants out of the flower bed at the beach house, haha).  Before I knew it our meal was done and it was time to go.

I was glad to get to head home a little early. I am tired from all of the anxiety I have been feeling today and I wanted to get home to see exactly how Brian was feeling about everything. I am still not completely sure though.

After spending some time with Brian my mom recruited me to do some stuff online for her because her computer isn’t working. Then it was time for the tub.

I take a bath almost every night. It is just some nice quite time where I can read, or do a word puzzle, or just kind of relax and mediate and wash off the day. Unfortunately my day today is still with me. I can tell by the tight feeling in my chest and the acid reflux burning my throat and the knot in my stomach. I was comforted for a short bit while I savored a square of dark chocolate, washed down with some skim milk.

I am learning to appreciate dark chocolate. When you eat milk chocolate it is so creamy and sweet it is easy to scarf it down. The dark chocolate seems to have a better flavor when you take your time to eat it and savor it. It took me as long to eat this square as it would to eat an entire Hershey bar.

Now I think it is time for lights out so I can be nice and rested for tomorrow morning’s pre-work workout.

Unfortunately my day today is still with me. I can tell by the tight feeling in my chest and the acid reflux burning my throat and the knot in my stomach. I was comforted for a short bit while I savored a square of dark chocolate, washed down with some skim milk.

I am learning to appreciate dark chocolate. When you eat milk chocolate it is so creamy and sweet it is easy to scarf it down. The dark chocolate seems to have a better flavor when you take your time to eat it and savor it. It took me as long to eat this square as it would to eat an entire Hershey bar.

Now I think it is time for lights out so I can be nice and rested for tomorrow morning’s pre-work workout.

I am exhausted from all of the anxiety from the day. I can’t imagine how Brian feels.  Except for tired because I am pretty sure he is conked out on the couch right now.

Brian found out that his new territory extends from North Charlotte to Boone. And he also found out that his boss is requiring him to work out of the Hickory office 2 days this week and he is supposed to be there at 7:30 AM. Hickory is an hour away!

Hopefully things will workout okay, but I am worried about Brian. I want us both to be happy with what we re working at each day. And I feel very unsettled right now.

I did take a break from all of the anxiety to go have dinner with my Pawpaw. It was great. I missed dinner last week so I was ready for a little quality time. We met at K&W to eat so he did not have to go home and cook after working all day. We both ate for under $12. How great is that?

Cafeteria food is not my fave because I have a tendency to be a picky eater at places like that. I am hesitant to get the veggies because I doubt that I will like them. Usually when we eat at a cafeteria we split some fried chicken and mashed potatoes, but not tonight.

Tonight I had 2 fried whiting filets with tartar sauce. It was either this or baked spaghetti for me. And I had a side salad with ranch dressing on the side.

The ranch was soooo good on the salad. I only ended up using a tbsp or so since I dipped my fork in the dressing rather than dumping it on the salad. Other than that I ate it all. I ate both filets with all of the tartar sauce and all of the salad. It was all very tasty.

The conversation was great. I had a great time hearing about Pawpaw’s week and making sure he is doing alright. Plus I got to tell on my Dad on a story that he left out a few details (i.e. thinking he broke his truck while trying to pull some plants out of the flower bed at the beach house, haha).  Before I knew it our meal was done and it was time to go.

I was glad to get to head home a little early. I am tired from all of the anxiety I have been feeling today and I wanted to get home to see exactly how Brian was feeling about everything. I am still not completely sure though.

After spending some time with Brian my mom recruited me to do some stuff online for her because her computer isn’t working. Then it was time for the tub.

I take a bath almost every night. It is just some nice quite time where I can read, or do a word puzzle, or just kind of relax and mediate and wash off the day.
