Ella: Introduce us to the book, Even Sinners Have Souls TOO.
E.N. Joy: Even Sinners Have Souls TOO is book two from the “Sinners Series”. As editor and publisher of this project, it was my goal to share with the reading audience well written and compelling stories by some of the industry’s most respected and authority authors in the Urban Lit genre.
 

Ella: Why was it important to produce this work today?
E.N. Joy: Books and authors of books that are categorized as urban, erotic, street, ghetto, gangster, Hip-Hop fiction, or whatever else they are being labeled, are taking hard hits in the industry, especially by these so-called “literary writers”. Why is it that whenever black people bring the life they live front and center and turn it into art, society goes crazy? Are we that afraid and offended of the ghetto and the projects to the point where we ridicule those who talk about it? Is growing up in the hood that taboo?

E.N. Joy: Despite popular belief, everything that comes from the ghetto isn’t all bad. There are some good products of the ghetto. It produces great individuals, some even authors. But because of the type of genre that these authors choose to pen, they are stigmatized and rumored unable to create literature without glorifying a trigger happy, drug dealing thug, or a burgundy micro braid wearing, gum poppin’, promiscuous gold digger, or a television stealing crack head (in addition to at least two curse words per paragraph).
 

Ella: Will this book change how Urban Lit is protrayed as a industry?
E.N. Joy: There is a huge misconception that authors who write Urban Lit, referred to as Street Lit by many, can’t pen a decent story that doesn’t include foul language and explicit sex scenes. These authors are even often accused of glorifying street life. The “Sinners Series” forces critics and skeptics alike to take a different stand when they read the storylines contained in the “Sinners Series.”

Ella: What are some unique aspects of the Sinners Series?
E.N. Joy: Even Sinners Have Souls Too offers more of Urban Lit’s finest take a walk on the other side in book two, Even Sinners Have Souls Too, of the three book Sinners Series. Darrell King and Essence Best-Selling authors, Victor L. Martin, Tysha and Michel Moore bring you four smashing tales, but not before National Best-Selling author, K’Wan, hits you with the powerful introduction, “Oh Sinner Man.”

E.N. Joy: The authors bring to life the same raw and gritty characters found in some of their other works. There are the dope boys, the hood rats, the promiscuity, homosexuality, the gang bangers, abuse, drugs, alcohol, etc…; all the things that exist in real life on the streets. Ella: What impact with the Sinners Series have on the community?
E.N. Joy: The “Sinners Series” is going to shatter the myth about urban and street literature and its authors once and for all. This project is not so that authors have to defend their work, or even compromise it.

The purpose is to show that they are multi-talented with a natural gift to pen what flows through their spirit and not just what’s selling, and at the same time to add a creative twist on their already original writing styles. In doing so, we pray that readers will be touched and moved by every single character; every single story…that they won’t be the same person as they were before reading these works.

I am back in Hyderabad.  Getting over a physical sickness that is a combination of emotional, physical and cinema exhaustion.  Mumbai is on speed.  I can see why people get hooked to the place and can’t leave.  It’s an artificial high and one does not want to get out of it.  There is a false sense that one is progressing even if one is just running in the same place.  Especially when one is a filmmaker and playing the waiting game.  Waiting for a producer to get back, waiting for an actor to get back, waiting for a girl freind or boy freind to call back, waiting for financing, waiting for the muse, waiting for the universe to open up, waiting for, as in Jerry Mcguire – ‘The Kwan’.  Bombay has a remedy for that.  Something is always happening so the waiting does not seem like waiting.  It’s like random brownian motion.  Trying to make sense of it will be futile.  Film is a waiting game.  In Los Angeles, actors and filmmakers deal with it by actually waiting tables.  In Mumbai, they mask it with random activity.

Slowly a sense of self is seeping into me.  My sickness is creating a clearing for a new project i guess.  A purging of sorts.

Ram Mohan got on the chat as soon as I got back from Mumbai.  He is sick too.  He says ‘Aparna it’s been 20 days since we met, you need to buck up’.  I loved the imperative tone of that.  We are going to get along great.

Tomorrow I am going to meet Lakshmi Manchu for lunch.  It will be nice to met someone from LA andmore importantly from the Playhouse.  I could use some Milton talk and some playhouse energy to jump start my project.

Oh, and next week Dad is going to help me buy a Moped.  I will have wheels in Hyderabad.  How fun.

I have been waiting for this TVB series for a whole year, finally, it will be released on 19th October 2009. The title of this post is the title of the series. The title tells all, the evil plots to survive and to achieve higher rankings among woman in palace (Tong Dynasty). The series will be 33 episodes long.

This idea of this series came out last year (2008), aimed to break the record of Jewel in the Palace (50 rating points) and Moonlight Resonance (50 rating points). This series is going to be similar with Korean’s Jewel in the Palace, now it’s Hong Kong version, which is said to be better.

The synopsis of the series: (source from Astro on Demand)

Imperial Household Bureau is responsible for managing and directing all household services to the Emperor and the Imperial family in Tong Dynasty. It is comprised of four departments, namely Jewels, Attire, Food and Furnishings. LAU SAM HO (Charmaine Sheh) and YIU KAM LING (Tavia Yeung) are introduced into the bureau in their tender age and brought up in the disciplines of the palace. The two girls are diligent. YUEN TSUI WAN (Susanna Kwan), Head of the Jewels, and CHUNG SUET HA (Michelle Yim), Head of the Attire, are both very fond of HO for she is a kind-hearted young girl. Soon, they start fighting for the fellowship of HO.

HO always remembers her mother’s words left to her before she passed away, that she was told, ‘Doing good deeds, Speaking good words, Showing goodwill’. She lives her life of being gracious and kind-hearted in the palace. On the other hand, LING believes her survival in palace is achieved through cruel and calculating tactics. She cheats and schemes her way to the top and finally becomes the concubine. Though she realizes that HO has fallen in love with the chess master KO HIN YEUNG (Kevin Cheng), her jealousy still arouses by HO’s attraction to the Emperor LEE YI (Moses Chan). Fearing that she is losing power, she ruthlessly makes up a false allegation against HO for murdering the Empress (Mary Hon) and condemns her to death. No matter how clever she is to scheme, things do not go the way she planned. By using a strong comparison of the two distinctive characters, HO and LING, the message of the drama is that “benevolence” is the only way to gain final victory.

Can’t wait to watch this series, really looking forward to it, high expectation on it, to be the most favourite and best TVB series of the year (the other contender is Rosy Business and Born Rich). TVB wants to promote more on Tavia Yeung Yi this time (last year winning Best Supporting Actress of her acting in Moonlight Resonance). This series, she will be the main villain, accompanying other experienced villains like Susan Tse (villain in Rosy Business), Michelle Yim (villain in Moonlight Resonance, Best Actress in 2008), Susanna Kwan (villain in Heart of Greed). This is the first time Tavia acting as villain character while Charmaine is always the good character (boring) one.

Lead actresses: Charmaine Sheh, Tavia Yeung, Michelle Yim, Susanna Kwan.

Lead actors: Moses Chan, Kevin Cheng.

Must watch it on time, despite the busy schedule of my semester, because it’s almost end of my semester, time to complete all assignments, models, presentations, examinations, etc.

If you’re a waiter and the kid at the table is talking about fishing with dynamite, then don’t give him crayons for his placemat. You can give him the plastic cup with the lid–the kiddie cup–but wait until you bring out everyone’s drinks, and make sure it’s your last night or make sure you’re sleeping with the manager because even though it will be funny to you to give a 12/13 year-old, hyper-precocious Korean kid with glasses a kiddie cup, you should have some bit of insurance; most likely Kwan’s mom is going to want to talk to the manager you’re sleeping with (but nothing more because he’s married and you’re “not gay”) because you couldn’t just give him the plastic cup and enjoy the joke yourself, you had to tell the rest of the staff, including Pablo the dishwasher who actually came out and just stared straight at the kid, then laughed–laughed hard because he hates kids who will never have to get their hands dirty!–and that tipped off the mom because had it just been the kiddie cup and your straight-faced satisfaction, then she would have only suspected. But thanks to Pablo (and Chewy the sous chef) she caught you and explained to the manager that her son had had a particularly bad day at school (he’d spilled pudding on his pants and someone called him Captain Poop, which lead everyone to call him Captain Poop) and they were spoiling him to take his mind off of it and he’s not precocious, but very timid, and it was his father who encouraged him to think of a way to fish without using a pole because getting Kwan to brainstorm strange things was recommended by the therapist.

Maybe you should just go with the crayons.

Eurovision…2009…Moscova… Yeah, this was a quite big event for Russia the last weekend i think. I  was watching the  final until 1:30am  for nothing.  It was a boring show…nothing  interesting…not even those 15 minutes for  voting were filled nicely, that show with the girls jumping in water some  something bizarre and now if i remember Apocalyptica’s performance 2 years ago in Helsinki at Eurovision…well then i better shut up commenting on the show in Saturday.  I was quite disappointed by the results too… after all i saw that Waldo’s People for Finland received  so many votes at the previous shows and they so liked them and   they chose them they finished last. :| Ok, this must be a joke. I personally would have liked much more Kwan to go to the final to represent Finland but the Finns taken another decision. Romania’s performance let’s say was ok…  the music Elena sung wasn’t my style so that’s why i don’t comment on it. Not that Waldo’s People would be my style but  i must admit  i like the song. Ok, so the winner…Norway was a good song and now i  finally can say that  there was a winner  who deserved it and didn’t win because of horrible looks (and no here i’m not refering to Lordi, but Slovenia in 2007 or whatever year they won). Second Iceland was better even, for me was amazing because the singer reminded me of Sharon from Within Temptation.  Another performance i liked was Estonia…the girl sung  in estonian and she had a nice  voice, i really liked it.

Grand March For Housing

At today’s rally Jenny Kwan said, “Homelessness is not like cancer. There is a cure. It’s called, building affordable housing.” To get action on these few words is why thousands marched today.

The Grand March For Housing brought out an enormous crowd demanding immediate government action to build social housing, raise welfare and the minimum wage.

I’d like to mention this video, again, about Little Mountain Social Housing Complex. That over 200 housing units sit empty while people sleep on the street should not go unnoted. Alleviating the suffering of homelessness is as simple as accessing alreading existing buildings.

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) is presenting the 2009 Young Investigator Award to Dr. Mo Kwan Kang, from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA. The award will be presented at the IADR 87th General Session & Exhibition in Miami, Florida, USA, on April 1, 2009.

Dr. Kang is associate professor, Section of Endodontics, at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He was the first student who successfully completed the combined D.D.S./Ph.D. program at UCLA, where he graduated in 2001 and completed postgraduate specialty training in Endodontics in 2003.

Dr. Kang has studied the senescence (aging) process in normal human oral keratinocytes, with a long-range goal of understanding the health and disease of human oral mucosa. The objectives of Dr. Kang´s current research are to determine the long-term phenotypic and genetic effects of anti-retroviral drugs on human oral epithelial cells in patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). An additional objective is to develop adjunctive therapies to alleviate morbidity in human oral mucosa associated with anti-retroviral therapy.

Beginning with his first publication in 1998, he has authored more than 30 research articles and 40 abstracts. He has won several major research awards, including first place in both the pre-doctoral (1998) and post-doctoral IADR/Unilever Edward H. Hatton Awards Competitions (2002) sponsored by IADR.

Two of the papers authored by Dr. Kang were selected as featured articles – one as the cover of Experimental Cell Research and the other as the corresponding paper of the editorial commentary in Clinical Cancer Research. In 2007, Dr. Kang was awarded a new five-year R01 grant from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research for the project “Effects of Antiretroviral Therapy on Telomerase Function in Human Oral Epithelium.”

The IADR Young Investigator Award, supported by Crest Oral-B, P&G Professional Health, is designed to stimulate basic research in all dental disciplines. The recipient must not have reached his/her 40th birthday at the time the award is presented. The award consists of a monetary prize and a plaque and is one of the 16 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR.

coffee: Blast off!

Years back, okay, make that 1 score, 1 decade and 6 years past, my classmates and I were the first batch that had Citizens’ Army Training for girls in our school. While we groused about it, I guess that gave us bragging rights so that we were certainly proud of ourselves. It was actually great to spend Saturday mornings marching (yes, I could still walk then), carrying a dummy wooden rifle, wearing boots, no wait, I think they were just manly black shoes (no, we had to wear the same as everyone, so Gregg shoes weren’t allowed), fatigue uniforms, up and down, and white short-sleeved shirts underneath the hot long-sleeved top. years later, the long sleeved top was done away and replaced by white shirts, I believe. Oh yes, and we had matching caps too. Not baseball ones but pang-military talaga. We even went on a bivouac to Sum-ag, walking 7 kilometers. One fainted along the way, and guess what it wasn’t me. ANother arrived midway and all she had to do was salute our commandant 50 times (she was the best friend of his daughter). Unfair, right? But she doesn’t have the same bragging rights.

So where does the puto pao come in?

Right after CAT or during breaks, we’d walk to a nearby subdivision for really cold Coke. That was the time when transferring soft drinks to plastic bags was unheard of, when Coke litro wasn’t yet available I think. That small store which sold us those refreshing drinks also sold us puto. Really delicious. The puto was available in banana leaves, like Manapla puto, but tasted sweeter. It was later I think, that they began to sell  colored puto in pastel shades. Nice. Then the puto morphed into puto pao: puto with siopao filling. Delicious.

Years back, I rediscovered them in a Negros bazaar and realized they had a stall in SM Cubao. So for a party, I ordered several and everyone enjoyed it. I tried to order again but their shop in Cubao had closed, they didn’t deliver. Pity. This a.m., I reconnected with the owner, a former student of mine, and she gave me the number of their branch in Dian. Tel number is 8335843. Called up and was told they usually have it everyday, but to be sure, better to call first. They also have cakes and other products because they have a bakeshop now. One of these days…
