Some will know Tenacious D as the rock mock duo of comedians Jack Black and Kyle Gass. But the phrase also means something very different to me.

Don’t get me wrong. Jack Black cracks me up, and I certainly have a longstanding love affair with the guitar and rock music. School of Rock is one of my favorite movies about the classroom, and so you know, I even used to play in garage bands and did roadie and sound engineer work for a while!

Tenacious D – fense

In this case, though, I’m talking about another kind of Tenacious D. My reference is to the term first used by the well known sports commentator Marv Albert meant to describe an unrelenting, smothering DEFENSE by a basketball player or team. It stands to reason that Marv’s catchy phrase served as the inspiration for the name of Jack and Kyle’s band.

What does Tenacious D look like? Just gaze into the eyes of MU guard, David Cubillan, and you’ll see that Tenacious D is a state of mind.

OK, but what does defensive tenacity have to do with Education and me?

LOTS. Let me explain.

How An Educator Changed My Life

An educator who made a significant difference for me was my senior high basketball coach, Mr. Jim Sims. If that statement catches you by surprise, it’s because coaches are too rarely credited for their instructional role, but it’s enormous.

Fact is, I learned a vast amount about the game of basketball from Coach Sims, because he was an excellent teacher. To this day, I take pride in the expert knowledge he gave me.

Apart from the technical aspects of the game, I didn’t realize at the time that what he taught me about mental, physical, and emotional toughness would serve me so well throughout my professional career. I just thought it would make me a better basketball player. Does the photo of Coach Sims, to the left, leave ANY doubt that he is someone who could teach tenacity?

No kidding, the intense psychological mindset he cultivated in me led to success as a first-generation college student, a school teacher, a doctoral candidate, a professor, a department chair, and hopefully now as a dean. Honestly, I’m not bragging, because I can’t take credit. I’m just grateful to Coach for laying the foundation.

The reality is that I could not have flourished in any of these roles without the resilience and determination that this no nonsense, demanding educator instilled in me. Sure, I have some talent, but so did lots of other professionals, and many have much more than me. What has set me apart over the years, if anything, is clearly a credit to my mentor, and it centers on discipline, drive, and a singlemindedness of purpose.

By the way, that’s me playing some Tenacious “O” above. Nice uniforms, huh? At least I made the shot. Honest, I remember.

Playing Tenacious D

You may recall that I first alluded to uncommon willpower back when I wrote about the Miwaukee Marathon. In that post I noted the ability to summon up an inner strength in times of extreme hardship. Well, it was Coach Sims who created that capacity in me. He pushed me to the absolute brink of my limits, and I learned that I could handle whatever challenge basketball (or pretty much anything else in life) could throw at me.

And honestly, it’s always defensive tenacity that tests your mettle. Coach would say that you could rest on offense, and I think he was right. By contrast, when playing Tenacious D — relentlessly guarding your opponent or an area of the court, it’s an all out effort, a true gut check, and the closest thing I’ve known to Hell on earth.

Any dedicated athlete will report that in the heat of competition you have to reach deep, deep down and suck up every ounce of resolve imaginable to push on when your lungs and appendages fail you and your heart pounds like a frenetic tympani drum in your chest. Well, that’s what it feels like to play Tenacious D.

It’s about courage, determination, and an unconquerable spirit. Either you possess it or you quit. There is no middle ground. How one perseveres in the face of what seems to be physically insurmountable challenges speaks volumes about that person.

The Gift

So with your indulgence and as a means of emphasis, allow me to reiterate what I said in my marathon post:

I’m honestly hardpressed to think of a much greater gift that we educators can give to students than an indomitable will. When they are armed with a “can-do, never give up” attitude, the unimaginable becomes possible. It’s no coincidence that people who are unwilling to accept failure tend to be the most successful. Persistence is a powerful virtue as far as accomplishment and distinction go.

Coach Sims gave me that tenacity, and I’ll be forever indebted to him for it. As it turns out, I reconnected briefly with him a few years ago, and then wrote him a long letter saying what he had meant to me. I’m told he was deeply touched by it. I’ve also sent him some Marquette basketball shirts that he really likes. Believe me, it’s the least I could do considering the gift he’s given me.

Some Quick Qualifications

Before I wrap up, it’s important to note that an indomitable will is not always a good thing. I can think of at least two examples. The first deals with ignorance, the second with arrogance.

To pursue truly unobtainable goals on the belief that sheer force of will makes them attainable is an exercise in futility. I personally think it’s important for educators to give kids honest assessments and teach them that some dreams are out of reach. It’s the responsible thing to do, and the kids can still decide for themselves whether or not to continue pursuit of the goal. Anything less disservices them. We must help them learn to gauge reality in a way that neither promote false hope nor squelches it.

An indomitable will also becomes a negative when the person possessing it loses humility. To believe so much in yourself that you summarily dismiss the perspectives of others represents pure conceit. Unbridled tenacity breeds a rigidity that ultimately benefits no one. Self-assurance must always be tempered by perspective, and we have to teach kids that lesson, too.

A Final Word

The essence of my message is that, oddly enough, nothing in life prepared me better for the world than playing Tenacious Defense. In fact, I like to joke with my family that my exercise regimen will enable me to become a lean, mean, fightin’ machine. Well, speaking of reality checks, I’ll probably never get to that level of fitness.

But maybe I can still be a Tenacious Dean!

I’m going to try to make this a quick review tonight. It’s not because I don’t care enough about the D: on the contrary, I happen to think they’re one of the funniest musical acts in history and one of the best satirists when it comes to the pomposity of rock music. Jack Black’s atrociously charismatic lyricism combined with Kyle Gass’s virtuoso guitar playing makes for comedy that happens to be musically accomplished to boot. I’m just going to make this short because this is the kind of movie where you already know if you’re going to like it. It’s a musical comedy that is rock-oriented and Jack Black oriented. If you like the things they did on the HBO show or their first album, you get more of the same, and if you didn’t, then you’re probably very much in the dark as to why any of this is terribly funny.

We learn here the origins of the D, a rock duo that came together when rock prodigy Jack meets older, more experience guitar player Kyle busking one day and admires his handiwork. Kyle at first is annoyed by this nobody who has seriously latched onto him, but he grows a fondness for the plucky kid, and eventually they learn to rock wonderfully together. They form a bond and a friendship that will carry on through the coming years, and their music perfectly represents this new-found camaraderie. But they need something special to break into the big time, something that will set them apart from the millions of other bands who play open mics nights as their regular gigs. An opportunity appears from a mysterious store owner, who lets them in on The Pick of Destiny, a magical pick made from the horn of the Devil that will allow for any guitarist to play on an entirely different level. The pick is being held at a rock and roll museum, nobody at the museum knowing its true power, and the two hatch a plan to take it from under everyone’s noses. Along the way, their mental alacrity, their physical prowess, and even their friendship will be tested, because the road to the Pick of Destiny is littered with obstacles. But with the assistance of their only fan, Lee, can they avoid death or a break-up and become rock heroes?

It’s a pretty funny flick that really got dropped by fans and casual moviegoers alike when it came out, probably due to all the other Holiday blockbusters edging it out at the time, not to mention the fact that their last album was five years prior, and they were striking while the iron was freezing cold. But still, all things considered, it’s a good comedy. The jokes are pretty strong, most of them involving how pompous they are in the face of their total obscurity and the fact that rock music is so full of shit sometimes. They love to use the idea that you can rock SO HARD that you can change the physical properties of objects, like “I’m gonna ROCK your face off!” or “I’m gonna kill him with ROCK!” like it’s fucking kryptonite. Rock is just as bogus and self-important here as in the real world, and the gags do a good job of representing that. And while there are a few slow scenes that don’t pan out comically, the overall feel is still very positive, especially in the songs that move this musical along. They’re all for the most part, really good songs, well-made and catchy with all the tasty riffage that we expect from Tenacious D. The songs are a little too attached to the movie, sometimes, and can’t really live very long on their own, but as long as you’ve seen the movie once, you can at least cope with it and enjoy without living in total confusion. My favorite song? A little track called Master Exploder where Jack Black actually blows a guy’s head off with his ROCK!

Kyle and Jack have a good rapport together that translates well onto the screen. A big draw to this is their seemingly ad-libbed humor is that they actually like each other, which seems to be mostly a fleeting thing in comedic pair-ups these days. They play well off of one another, especially in the latter half of the movie where they interact more with one another. Like real friends, they just feel right together, and there’s no amount of coaching you can do to get as close and as natural with someone else as you can see with these two. It’s a real buddy duo for a really good buddy adventure movie. There’s action, suspense, lots of ganja, cameos that range from the expected (Dave Grohl) to the surprising (Ben Stiller) to the completely unexpected (Tim Robbins???) that are all pretty good. Don’t be surprised if you’re not a fan of the D to find this movie a little lacking, but even for the uninitiated, I think you can easily find something to laugh at here. Check it out, but don’t expect anything as epic as what you find on the cover and the artwork. It’s just a good-natured comedy with a great sense of humor that will be remembered for its financial failure but should be remembered for its charismatic leads and for fun that really delivers. I give Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny 7 1/2 ROCKED TO DEATH CORPSES out of 10.

Tomorrow we get magical and mystical with the black-and-white version of Beauty and the Beast! Until then!

I wonder why that could be. Hmmm… Oh yes – neither of those games are exactly anything special. But I think I know the real reason; 3 words – Modern Warfare 2.

Okay, so that’s two words and a number. But still. Brütal Legend has sold 216,000 copies on both PS3 and Xbox 360 (combined) and DJ Hero has sold roughly 123,000 (across 4 different platforms = fail), compared to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves which has sold 537,000 copies & went Platinum within the first month of its release and of course Modern Warfare 2 that sold 4.7 million copies within 24 hours. And because of those 4.7 million sales, several games have had to be delayed so they wouldn’t have to compete:

Alright, that was a joke. But seriously now, why is this all so? Sure, it’s probably a fun game to play. But underneath all the hype, it’s just a sequel to yet another war game. I’ve seen games with 10-times the amount of imagination and work put into them that barely saw the light of day. And with gaming sites giving it your basic 9/10 scores, it just goes to show that even “the biggest launch in the history of all forms of entertainment” isn’t perfect.

I’m literally kicking myself and dreading the thought of what might happen when the inevitable Modern Warfare 3 comes out…

Opa!!

XD).

The Metal

Tribute

Epic Records The self proclaimed “greatest band in the world” is back with their sophomo

Epic Records

The self proclaimed “greatest band in the world” is back with their sophomore release which doubles as the soundtrack to their first movie, a 100% accurate retelling of the band’s origins. Don’t go into this disc thinking that you’re going to get something on par with their debut masterpiece. It’s not the case. While the disc contains a couple of the band’s greatest songs ever, the overall length of the album and the shortness of the tracks holds it back. Only 6 of the 15 tracks are over 2 1/2 minutes.

“Kickapoo” kicks things off with Jack Black telling the story of how he survived an opressive upbringing to get inspiration from metal legend Ronnie James Dio. This is easily one of the greatest tracks the band has ever done. It sets up the mini rock opera nicely. Meatloaf stars as JB’s authoriarian father that refuses to let his son destroy his life with metal. Then, there’s basically a bunch of filler until the last song on the album “Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown).” That song is easily the definitive Tenacious D track. Think of it as a metal version of Charlie Daniel’s “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” KG and JB have to win a rock-off against the unholy overlord, the Devil himself, gloriously performed by Dave Grohl. The give and take between the two parties is simply priceless. Haven’t you ever wanted to hear Satan declare that he’s “the Devil, I Love Metal!” Of course you have.

Closing out the album is “POD” and “The Metal.” The former is the lead off single and basically tells the plot completely. The latter is an incredibly rocking metal song that shows just how hard the band could rock. The simple lyrics tell what happens when opposing genres try to encroach on Metal’s dominance. They end up as “vanquished foes.”

A few of the tracks have promise. They’re just too short. “The Government Totally Sucks” would have been a masterpiece if it were just longer. As soon as you start getting into it, the song ends. It’s frustrating.

Ultimately, if you choose to view this as a soundtrack instead of an album, then you’ll get more enjoyment out of it. It works perfectly for what it is, but those expecting more will be disappointed.

The Treehouse

formerly Andyman’s Treehouse, has become a staple music venue in Columbus, OH. The small hole-hole-in-the-wall bar’s slogan is “Hard to Find, Harder to leave.” Which is true in both regards. Located at 887 Chambers Road, the establishment was also rated by Esquire Magazine as one of the Best Bars in America. Many national names have also made their way to the bar including Times New Viking, Kyle Gass of Tenacious D and Evan Dando of Lemonheads. Under new management of Phil Palma, the place has become even more welcoming in recent years. It’s the perfect place to go and see your friend’s band or to just check out the local talent. It’s a place where people don’t mind if you have a few buckets of loud mouth soup and I can’t forget to mention their endless supply of Jameson either.

Brian Brown of The Plague. Photo Ben French

Fresh Jam Productions threw together a great time at The Treehouse on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Top Heavies had to back out due to the untimely death of one of their biggest fans and family members, Chris Butler. But, the show had to go on. A few calls later Fresh Jam lined up local musician Brian Brown’s new band, The Plague. Brown, formerly of Columbus’ hip hoppers The Lab Rats, was eager to fill in at last minutes notice.

Playing along with Plague were Cincinnati’s (Worthington) James McKee and Columbus’ rapper C-Hop.

“We used to share everything in our backyard” -J. McKee

People started to migrate to the performance room as McKee was sound checking The White Stripes song Effect and Cause, eager to hear some live music. McKee started the evening out with a solo set ripping out songs from his catalog including Bear v. Wolves and til Curfew. Also Playing a N.E.R.D. cover during the set, but I’m unfamiliar with the title. The fan support for McKee was tremendous for his first gig in Columbus, with fans from Medina, Worthington and Cincinnati to show their support. McKee is proving to be the new up-and-comer in the Fresh Jam Lineup. Expect to see him making moves in the near future.

C-Hop is the Name!

Back in the billin. C-hop at The Treehouse. Photo Ben French

Chris Hopkins, AKA C-Hop, took the stage next with laptop in hand. The West Columbus Rapper ran through his West Coast style rhymes including Church and State, Back in the ‘Billin and The Name is. C-Hop was excited to get his feet wet in a dirty rock bar as opposed to the Hip Hop clubs he is used to. A big fan of all types of music, C-Hop is looking to break boundaries and get people to listen to all types of music. C-Hop recently performed at Skully’s Music Diner in Columbus with D12 of Detroit. Expect to see more of C-Hop in the near future as we are looking to assemble a band to back him.

Introducing The Plague!!!

The Plague debuts at The Treehouse. Photo Ben French

The Plague ended their set by swapping instruments and performing Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the Machine, which proved to be definite crowd pleaser. The band has been putting a set together over the past few months, regularly performing at Gordy’s on the East Side. The band was excited to get back in the city to rock. Sometimes you need that spur of the moment gig to get you going. Brian Brown teamed up with bothers Yinger, Eric and Brian, to form The Plague. The band from Powell impressed the crowd with their upbeat tunes which included some old Lab Rats material like Someday You’ll Fade Away and Devil’s Train. The band kept the crowd moving with Eric Yinger on drums and Brian Yinger on bass. Brown took care of the vocals and highlighted guitar play. People were heard talking about Brown’s skill with the six string. Look forward to seeing more gigs from the trio in the near future.

Thanks to everyone who came out to The Treehouse and look forward to more acts coming to the Fresh Jam linup. Talks are in progress with talented blues musician Brian Larcey as well. It was also great to see both Chris “Fresh C” Karnes and Tony “The Jam” Canovi make an appearance at the event to scope out the new talent. We look forward to learning about and playing with new acts. As Eric Yinger of The Plague said “Looking forward to building a kick ass rockin music family.”

This song comes from the soundtrack of the movie “Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny,” and I think that it is one of the best examples of their illustrious style. They are both playful and talented musicians, and while their songs don’t call you into macro political action, neither do the songs of most other artists (even if their songs have one or two lines referencing Bush or capitalism). So you are left with two people who make songs that just make you happier; which seems pretty reasonable to me.

One of the things I’ve found about this song is that when you start singing it, you can’t stop, because there is no point during the song at which you don’t think to yourself, “wow, the next line is going to be hilarious.” Essentially, this song chronicles a rock-off between Tenacious D and the Devil. I was going to have a quote at the beginning, but I encountered the problem that I expounded upon at the initial sentences of this paragraph.

Essentially, this song is pure absurdity, and is thus great to listen to when you’re high.

I’m always astonished when a group of extremely talented people get together to make something this bad. Here we’ve got Jack Black, whom I still like; Michael Cera, who refuses to change his shtick but is usually likable enough; Harold Ramis, who’s made wonderful comedies like Groundhog Day; Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, two writers on The Office; and a host of terrific supporting players like David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Hank Azaria, Kyle Gass, Bill Hader, and Paul Rudd. Imagine all of them making a biblical comedy, and you’re prepared for something witty, inventive, and preferably hilarious. The reality, unfortunately, is that Year One is a flat, boring, and almost wholly inept enterprise that barely manages to get in any laughs at all. After decades in the business, Ramis’ apparent lack of any comedic timing here is bewildering, each scene either ending right before we think it’s about to get to the punchline or refusing to die like an awful SNL skit. There are a few amusing moments, most of them coming when Cross’ Cain kills the uncredited Rudd’s Abel, but basically everyone is here for the paycheck. Pathetic.

Though the lineup featured mostly “jam bands” (a.k.a. bands appreciated by sweaty hippies), for which I have an admitted aversion, there were enough outliers (Black Lips, Modest Mouse, and…Snoop?!) to keep me entertained throughout. In addition to having a great time, I learned the following two lessons:

1) It turns out, most sweaty hippies are really nice people.

and

2) Not all Dave Matthews Band fans are sweaty OR hippies. In fact, some of them rank among the coolest, funniest people in the world, and if you go to their shows you might be lucky enough to meet them(!):

Me and KG (aka Kyle Gass, aka Rage Kage)

Now here’s the irony. This year, I live in Michigan AND write a blog about the state’s music/culture and…I’m not going. And it’s not because of the decidedly jam-filled lineup (The Dead are still…alive?). The lineup features even more outliers than last year’s (Broken Social Scene(!), Girl Talk(!!), and Dylan(!!!)). No, the truth is that I’ve got family in town and am looking forward to playing some HORSE, eating some kind of grilled meat, and maybe watching Step Brothers (which my brother says is funnier than you’d think and worth watching as a family).

So here’s to you sweaty hippies. It’s nice to know you’re out there takin’ ‘er easy for all of us sinners.

BONUS: For everyone else at home, I recommend you keep up with ROTHBURY via the impressive and free live video feed. Also check out these bloggers who are covering the event:

So I have received a couple comments on my Wii Fit blog’s about how much my Mii looks like me.

So I have received a couple comments on my Wii Fit blog’s about how much my Mii looks like me. I have decided to make a post and highlight a couple of my favorite Mii’s so you can see them. I know, lame, but bear with me!

I have a LOT of Mii’s:

My Mii Plaza!

Not all of these were made by me, but most of them were! If you scan in there you will see Mario, Luigi, Santa (wearing white) Austin Powers, Harry Potter (kinda)…We will start with me!

Here I am!

I spent hours going through each of the different options to customize me. I think I did pretty good! Now I’ll show a couple celebrities I made:

Jack Black!

I love Jack Black and Tenacious D so I made a JB Mii. I also made his partner KG:

Kyle Gass!

Do you think it looks like them?

I do!

Of course they have changed their facial hair recently, and I haven’t updated the Miis…oh well

Being a good Fanboy I of COURSE have some Nintendo characters:

It's a Mario!

And his brother Luigi!

I know the hats aren’t right, but they are the closest that they have as an option! I like them!

I hope you enjoyed me showing off some of my Miis!
