Your #1 pick

For the life of me I can’t figure out why this episode has to be two hours.

I mean, combined, the fights are 30 minutes.  That’s an hour and a half of filler.  Is there really that much left unresolved that we need to see the ousted fighters banter for that long?

Nope.

I’m gonna skip all of that and just focus on the fights.

Up first, we’ve got Jonathan Brookins taking on Kyle Watson for a shot on the Ultimate Finale.  This is the kind of fight the casual fan and/or critic of MMA will point to the problem with the sport.  It was short of big strikes and long on ground game.  In fact, it spent the better part of 15 minutes on the ground with the fighters jockeying for incrimentally better position.  It was apparent pretty early on that Brookins had Watson’s number.  The number ended up being (30-27) x3.  Those were the scores in the unanimous decision that send Brookins to the finale.

Watson is a sturdy if unspectacular fighter and I could see him getting another look by the UFC.  Given his relationship with Matt Hughes that seems, to me at least, almost a given.

Up next was Michael Johnson (Team GSP) against Nam Phan (Team Koscheck).  Johnson was the first pick overall.  Phan was the sole surviving member of Team Koscheck. 

If the first fight was the arguement against, this one was the arguement for.  These two also went the full 15 minutes.  Along the way there were some really hard strikes thrown, including one from Johnson that opened a nasty cut over Phan’s eye.

Johnson clearly won the first round and Phan the second.  So, both of these guys’ seasons came down to the final five minutes.  It was another hard hitting round.  The difference came when Phan simply had no answer for Johnson’s takedowns.

Johnson won a split decision to advance to the finale.

So, Team Koscheck is shut out.  Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy and I won’t have to use that stupid yellow font anymore.

The Ultimate Finale airs tomorrow night on Spike TV beginning at 9pm EST.

My pick?

I’m going with Brookins.  Johnson hasn’t looked as sharp as everyone expected him to.  Brookins, on the other hand, has very quietly gone about the business of kicking ass.  I think he’ll take the victory, quite possibly by submission.

Who will join them?

That’s what this week’s show is all about.

They’ve saved Bruce Leroy’s fight for the very end, presumably to milk every last bit of his irritating personality before disposing of him (see also – Slice, Kimbo).

Our first fight tonight will pit Kyle Watson against Aaron Wilkinson.  Wilkinson carries a lot of extra baggage into this fight.  He earned this spot by winning the “wild card” fight a couple of weeks ago.  Then, in the footage leading up to the fight, he learns that his grandmother has died back home in England.

He, of course, opts to stay and fight in Nana’s memory, but it is obviously weighing on him.

Watson, the oldest cast member, made a good showing in his first fight and looks to grapple his way into the finals.

LET’S GET IT ON!

Not much of a fight here.  Watsonhad control for most of the first round.  He took Wilkinson to the ground and worked himself into position for a submission victory using a rear naked choke.

That’s right, Team Koscheck lost ANOTHER fight to a rear naked choke.

You can imagine how well Koscheck took that.

The second fight of the night was the only quarter-final fight to pair teammates.  The bad blood between Michael Johnson and Alex Caceres has been building since the bleach in the fabric softener (not to be confused with the banana in the tailpipe) incident several weeks ago.

Tonight, both men get the fight they, and GSP, wanted.

Johnson didn’t take Caceres and his “Bruce Leroy” schtick too seriously and it nearly cost him.  Caceres hung in there and went the full two rounds.  Johnson won by unanimous decision, but had to admit that Caceres was a tougher fighter than he thought.

After the fight, Dana White, GSP and Josh Koscheck met to determine the semi-final fights.  To everyone’s amazement, they all agreed.

The semi-finals will be:

JONATHAN BROOKINS (TEAM GSP) v. KYLE WATSON (TEAM GSP)

MICHAEL JOHNSON (TEAM GSP) v. NAM PHAN (TEAM KOSCHECK)

No pressure on Nam Phan, eh?  He is Josh Koscheck’s sole chance at needing to appear at the finals this weekend.

Brookins versus Watson could be interesting, but I think Johnson versus Phan is more exciting matchup.

My picks?

Jonathan Brookins and Michael Johnson.

Two guys.

One fight.

One slot.

That’s what this week is all about.

Yes kids, its the return of the “wild card” fight.

Marc Stevens comes into the fight as a controversial pick.  Aaron “English” Wilkinson not so much.

Things get off to a rough start as Josh Koscheck once again gets into a verbal confrontation with Team GSP paramedic, Brad Tate.  Koscheck has done an excellent job of making himself look like an absolute tool throughout the season.  This was just the cherry on top of the d-bag sundae.

Stay classy Josh.

 Dana White was looking like a genius after the first round.  He practically insisted that Stevens get the slot in this fight.  Stevens fairly dominated Wilkinson.  Stevens looked to have this one well in hand.

That’s when the second round started and stopped very abruptly!

Within the first minute of the second round, Wilkinson locked in a guillotine and forced Stevens to tap out.

That’s right, Stevens got caught in the same move that eliminated him in his first fight.

Or, as Stevens said after the fight:

I think I need to work on my guillotine defense.

Gee Marc, you think?

Anyway, Wilkinson is your wild card, giving Team Koscheck  three fighters in the quarter finals.

The coaches and Dana White meet with the fighters about who they would like to face.  GSP games the system again and the quarter-final fights are announced:

• NAM PHAM v. CODY MCKENZIE
• SAKO CHIVITCHIAN v. JONATHAN BROOKINS
• KYLE WATSON v. AARON WILKINSON
• MICHAEL JOHNSON v. ALEX CACERES

The gaming GSP did got Michael Johnson the fight with Bruce Leroy, perceived by everyone involved to the be the current weakest link.

We’ll see if that works out.

For those of you just joining us, Team GSP is in firm control of this season.  They’ve won the first two fights and befuddled Team Koscheck.

Before the fights, we get more footage of Bruce Leroy’s in-house shenanigans.  He’s full of shit and his housemates call him on it.

He doesn’t take kindly to it and talks more trash.

This led to open mockery from the other fighters and a pull apart near brawl between Leroy and Sevak Magakian.

Leroy better hope that Magakian doesn’t win his first round fight, because if he does, I’m reasonably certain he’s going to decapitate Leroy in the second round.

GSP announces that this week’s fight will be Kyle Watson (Team GSP), the oldest fighter in the house, taking on Andy Main (Team Koscheck).

Nobody is sure if this will be a standup fight or turn into a BJJ clinic.

Let’s find out shall we?

Things go badly for Team Koscheck once again, as Andy Main fails to follow the plan laid out by his coaches and falls victim to a rear naked choke in the second round.

This victory gives Team GSP three in a row and clearly gets the best of Koscheck.  He takes his frustrations out on a chair and huffs out of the locker room Rampage Jackson style.

Bruce Leroy

When last we joined our band of UFC hopefuls, all fourteen had just won a qualifier fight and moved into the big UFC house somewhere in the environs of Las Vegas.

Up next?

What every team has done since time immemorial…pick teams.

During the pre-draft conversations, we see team captain George St-Pierre (GSP from here on out) discussing strategy to get rival, Josh Koscheck, to outsmart himself.

Koscheck won the coin toss and, with it, the first pick.  GSP created a fake draft sheet and gave Koscheck an “unwitting” look at it.  GSP’s alleged first pick was one of Koscheck’s guys so Koscheck altered his draft strategy to get “his guy” allowing GSP to get the guy he really wanted.

First win to GSP.

The 14 fighters were divided up into two teams.  They are as follows:

I really wish Josh Koscheck had chosen a different team color.  That one doesn’t show up well at all.

Anyway, since Koscheck got the first pick (sort of), GSP gets to pick the first fight.  His charge Alex Caceres aka Bruce Leroy asks for the first fight and GSP gives it to him. 

His opponent?  Jeff Lentz.

Lentz came with his own issues.  Immediately upon moving into the fight house, he began drinking and smoking.  Not your typical regimen for an MMA fighter.  His teammates were concerned about his dedication and his cardio, not necessarily in that order.

Then its fight time.

Lentz had the fight in hand for the first round.  He stood in with Caceres.  Too bad for him it went to a second round.  In the second round, Caceres came at Lentz like a spider monkey.  He climbed Lentz and locked in a triangle choke for the submission victory at 2:27 in the second.

Rumor has it the victory celebration went something like this.

Okay, that’s the final Last Dragon reference, at least until he fights again.

Yes, I know I’m horribly late on this, but I’m going to get us caught up dear readers.  Just hang tight.  I’ve been watching them.  I just haven’t had time to write about them.

The 12th season of the UFC and Spike TV‘s MMA reality show focuses on the lightweights as well as the escalating tensions between coaches Josh Koscheck and Georges St-Pierre.  Why?  Because at the end of the season Koscheck will fight St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Title.

Twenty-eight fighters we given the golden ticket to show up at the UFC training center in Las Vegas and fight for their way onto the show. 

UFC president, Dana White, also announced the return of the wild card fight to determine who will get the 8th spot in the quarter finals.

In a single hour, Spike gave us a few fights and a lot of highlights.

According to St Pierre, Josh “Kos” Koscheck told Penny Buffington executive producer of MMA2DAY and other members of the media lies. “On this interview right now he just said 2 lies. The 1^st lie was that he is happy to be fighting in Montreal that is not true. He is not happy at all and the 2^nd lie is that I am a fake person. I am not fake, that is not true at all. I never derail from the person that I am and for what I stand for.”

Koscheck responded, “Let’s get this for the record, Mr. St Pierre; I am not lying about coming to Montreal. I am actually excited about it and I can’t wait to get there and you are going to see on Dec 11^th how excited I am about being in Montreal. Whether it’s in Vegas, whether it’s in Pittsburg, whether it’s in Montreal, I am still coming to whip your ass.”

Later during the conference “Rush” said, “I am not definitely working on the one thing or the other.” (Referring to wrestling)  “I am always sharpening up everything. I try to sharpen up all my skills pretty much equally. I try to be a complete fighter and well, he doesn’t know what I am going to do to him.”

Georges has a mixed martial arts record of 20 – 2 – 0. Josh’s record is 15 – 4 – 0. The 2 times that Georges did lose were to Matt Hughes and Matt Serra. He then fought both for a second time and won.

Both coaches seemed committed to the coaching process with comments like the one Josh gave, “When I was on The Ultimate Fighter Season One I was with Chuck Liddell and he was getting ready to fight Randy Couture. He was undefeated for 2 years. I obviously looked up to him and respected him as a fighter and as a person. I definitely tried to think about that experience when I was on The Ultimate Fighter and tried to give to these guys the experience that I had with Chuck.”

St. Pierre coached on a previous season of The Ultimate Fighter- Season 4. He explained he had other coaching experience as well. “This was not my first coaching experience.”  he explained, “I have coached before; I was working for a governmental program helping teenager kids. It was in the beginning of my career. So, it’s not my first experience but it’s just weird to be coaching guys that are actually going to be in the octagon. This is a whole nother level. It’s a good experience.”

Season 12 is made up of 28 lightweights. Their names are: JJ Ambrose, Paul Barrow, Jason Brenton, Jonathan Brookins, Mike Budnik, Alex Caceres, Sako Chivitchian, Joseph Duffy, Pablo Garza, Toby Grear, Daniel Head, Michael Johnson, Amir Khillah, Jeff Lentz, Sevak Magakian, Steve Magdaleno, Andy Main, Cody McKenzie, T. Koscheck says, “I think our fights are all exciting and it is defiantly going to be a good season.”

Seems like forever since my last Sunday Post and this week is a good week to get back on track. A wide array of style and talents are on display this evening from the Bloc Party remix by Alex Metric that’s got that patented Metric sheen to D.I.M. & TAI’s collaboration ‘Lyposuct’ that has been committing dancefloor arson in clubs all over Europe.

Throw in a dash bumpin breaks from General Midi for a veterans perspective and some Sharklslayer, Joakim and Whomadewho and you have the best playlist to blot out the blues of Monday all beginning with the radio edit style of the this Bloc Party single. [Images - Mike Mitchell]

This ones rolls along in a Falkish fashion but goes further into mainstream club territory but still logs the best Bloc Party remix I have heard to date.

Sidechains have always made warm and soft house music with an emphasis on disco setups and leads. There must be something about Spain’s coastal breeezes and warm sunshine that showers this Hed Kandi release from Booty Luv. If anybody is planning a trip to Ibiza this summer wait until Aug 29th to go so that you can catch Sidechains do a set at the Hed Kandi night.

Crunk house DJ’s Jack Stuart & Slade Templeton dropped this one last month but I only found it this weekend. Better known as Defunct! this ‘Fokkin Lekker’ EP was put out by Dandy Kid records and features a fellow Pottymouthed producer in Kyle Watson. Who crushes it as usual with his fidgety bit tortured wobble bass.

This one from D.I.M. & TAI hardly needs an introduction since it first showed up as a Youtube video via the Boys Noize blog with it high pitch build to the off beat pokes and jabs from squishy horn machine. Add in the pressed out drum kits and gigantic bass section and you have what ther Japanese Popstars refer to as a “Face Melter”

As I mentioned in the intro to the Sunday Post veterans General Midi have been rocking the British Isles and beyond for some time now without any of the accolades of the internationally acclaimed Prodigy’s, Moby’s, or Chemicals. Always in a style of funky breaks and drop kick hip hop execution their sound hearkens back to a day of simple electronic sound compositions with cutting edge technology driving it.

Next up is Joakim with arguably the best example of why I adore him. Eno/Byrne style rock melodies dropped over top of a spongy house kick with Stephen Hawking voice editing. Creeeepy Cool!

‘So Sincere’ is the new EP from Sharkslayer who keeps making interesting drum and bass tracks and calling them electro. Surely I don’t mind the split personality as it is the perfect synergy of the two styles.

Well, as you might have noticed the year is coming to an end, and I think we all know what goes down when that happens. Nothing. No one does a damn thing. It’s almost as if the music industry is like “oh, hey, well, we’re done for the year, so peace”. Unlike all the other LOSERS out there, Potty Mouth Records “drop albums like they’re hot” all year around. On December 8th, Kelevra of PMR dropped his Clean Jeans EP, which can be purchased exclusively on Beatport for the next four weeks.

The EP is pretty solid. Given the fact that it’s from Potty Mouth, I don’t think the album really needs any explanation, I will however give you a heads up that the DJ Bam Bam remix of “Like To Freak” is disgusting. I’d highly recommend giving these clips a listen and then picking up the EP on Beatport. Win/ win. Lemme know what “ya’ll” think.
