On first impressions Heaven seemed an unlikely venue for instrumental post/math rockers 65daysofstatic. Host to legendary night G.A.Y. and typically showcasing artists such as Kylie Minogue and Girls Aloud, the venue- emblazoned with posters advertising Porn Idol and the next week’s latest X-Factor reject- seemed a mile away from 65dos’s math rock offerings…

Yet once inside Heaven these initial thoughts were forgotten. Apart from the odd mosaic male torso that adorned the walls here and there, the cool underground vibe of the venue took over and musings of Heaven’s usual musical fare were soon discarded. Completely constructed of red brick, and residing underneath Charing Cross Station, the club’s windowless railway arches and hidden coves made the perfect setting for 65dos’s instrumental shenanigans.

A bit of histoire for those of you unfamiliar with the band… 65daysofstatic, also known as 65dos, 65days or the perfectly simple 65, formed in Sheffield in 2001. The band, who were originally a three-piece, is made up of Joe Shrewsbury (guitar), Paul Wolinski (guitar & programming), Rob Jones (drums) and Simon Wright (bass). Since 2004 the band have released three full-length albums, The Fall of Math (2004), One Time for All Time (2005), and The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007). They have also released the EPs Stumble.Stop.Repeat (2003), Hole (2005) and The Distant And Mechanised Glow Of European Dance Parties (2008) and released a live album in 2008 entitled Escape From New York. Their music is interspersed with heavy, progressive guitars, and mixed with drums, samplers, computer glitches, keyboards and the occasional voiceover. According to legend 65dos’s name originates from the band’s desire to record a soundtrack for John Carpenter’s unreleased fictional film Stealth Bomber, which is said to have been produced over 65 days of static. Other rumours say that the band named themselves after a 1950s CIA coup d’etat in Guatemala who claimed that 65 days was all that was needed to overthrow a country. Whether you want to believe that is up to you…

Heaven, Under The Arches.

Having to get a six o’ clock train out of Cardiff, then getting lost in the labyrinth that it Charing Cross Underground meant that I only arrived at Heaven at nine… and wandered in just as support act Three Trapped Tigers were exiting the stage. I also missed this band at (Sŵn), so I was rather gutted, but not for long as the rather awesome DJ filled the time with his Bloc Party meets Telepathe remixes.

65dos are one of those bands you have to see live to appreciate the full extent of their musical capability. Although whacking up the volume of The Fall of Math in your bedroom creates some pretty amazing sounds, the 65 live experience is one that cannot be replicated. Starting promptly at 9.15, as promised, meant that their hour and 35 minute set did not overrun, and thus cause me to miss either the last train home, or even worse the end of the gig.

Starting with their first single Retreat! Retreat! 65 demonstrated from the onset that their unique instrumental sound can be both brutal and beautiful. Although there are neither vocals nor lyrics, these usual attributes are rendered unnecessary when 65dos take to the stage. From the barrage of drum beats and guitar shreds, the set took a change of pace with the first minute and a half of the next song, Drove Through Ghosts To Get Here. Beginning with the well-known dulcet keyboard melodies, before descending into the drum and bass-like ending of the song proved a huge crowd pleaser.

Despite not playing Betraying Chino, one of my favourite 65 tracks, the band seamlessly blended old favourites, such as The Fall Of Math, Fix The Sky A Little and When We Were Younger And Better with new, yet unnamed material, which Joe explained was taken from their as-yet untitled forthcoming album. Whether playing soft and melodic keyboard solos, or huge Prodigy-esque dance numbers, such as 65 Doesn’t Understand You, the band had the crowd captivated. It was amazing to watch the audience’s reactions; one minute they collectively stood still in admiration, the next they were going crazy and chanting ‘65′ with clamour.

Despite the lack of lyrics, Joe had no trouble talking to the masses in between instrument changes. In one particular lull, when Paul had to run off stage to fix a technical issue, Joe began rambling on, and even said “Looks like heaven really is a place on earth…” before erupting with laughter and continuing his penchant for wild dancing.

Yet jokes and laughter aside, the moment the whole crowd had been anticipating arrived when 65dos returned on stage for their final song of the night. Prolonging the beautiful, yet haunting keyboard introduction to Radio Protector for almost four minutes was anything but tedious, and kept the crowd on edge waiting and craving the moment when the guitars and drums kicked in for what was certainly the best moment of the night. Gradually turning up the volume, then slowly adding more instruments, 65dos had the crowd in the palm of their hand as they finally reached the song’s powerful climax of all four instruments merging together. The song’s break down echoed the same sense of shared euphoria that was visible in the room, and as the band left the stage to huge ovation and thunderous chants of ‘65′ from the whole crowd, the enormity of the 65dos experience hit me. The fact that there was only a one-song encore did not matter, as I don’t think that 65daysofstatic could have ended the gig any better way. If only I could have stayed to savour the moment instead of having to make a dash for the Bakerloo line…

I’m small. Really small. Somewhere between 5″1 and 5″2. And by that I mean 5″1. Jesus. You people.

I hate being small to be honest with you. I hate not being able to see as much as other people in crowds, I hate it when people think I’m sweet by simple virtue of my stature (I’m not; they soon realise), I hate it when I get IDed in for tobacco, I hate it when I have to get the attention of some oversized man who, at some stage, will peer down to say something like: ”you’re very small”, as though this fact had escaped me for the last 32 years. Yes, my friend, I’m very small. At least I am not very stupid.

However, all of this aside, there is very little I can do about my diminutive frame and, despite holding out until – until about last week – for an unexpected science defying growth spurt, all that’s left is for me to come to terms with it. And I’m using the following tactics to do so:

Inspiration

Yesterday the Suit alerted me to the fact that Shakira, who I adore for her orphanage building, honest hips and feisty shake, is but 4″11. 4″11. I know. Then there’s Madonna who skims in at 5″3, only slightly taller than the excellently proportioned Ms Minogue, at 5″1. These women are powerful, successful and beautiful. These women have not been defined by their height; they have grown far beyond it. These women fucking rock. I like them.

Common sense

When I was little. Shut up. When I was young, I went with my Dad to the doctor. It was important because he was involved; normally my mother carted us off to the homeopath and we discussed whether or not we preferred to sleep with our feet covered or not, then took a few sugary pills and went home to get better ‘naturally’. I digress. There I was at in the Doctor’s surgery with my dad. The two men looked at each other and then my dad nodded towards me: my daughter is very short, he declared. The Doctor concurred and suggestions were considered. They involved hormones and up to half a million English pounds. Dad is from Yorkshire and, looking me up and down once again, declared: you’re not *that* short. And we left.

He’s right. I’m not *that* short. I could be shorter. I could be SHAKIRA. And being restricted by my height will only ever be something I choose to do myself.

Except for theme parks. You know? The ones with that fucking bunny and his bendy ear when you’re a kid. If you don’t stretch past the ear, you don’t go on the ride. Stupid fucking bunny.

Taking a chill pill

And above all this, above all the ‘if only I could be something other than I am’ mentalities which seem to poison so many women in our society (thanks Miss Moss, lovely job), I can just take this one on, take a deep breath and stop freaking worrying about it. Because there are so many other more interesting things to think about. And, anyway, 5″1 is clearly the new now. Actually, fuckit, it’s the new tomorrow. I’m taller than Shakira, and Shakira rocks.

Every time a 0 is involved with the turning year, people tend to go crazy over “the best _____ of the decade”. Lists come out about music and movies and tv shows and whatever. Well, I decided to do that. Because I’m a dork. What I ended up doing is a list of things for every year since the year 2000. I will talk about some of them and leave links to others that I think are fantastical and that I belive you (whoever you are) might enjoy. So. Here we go. Expect to see some bands that repeat, and some that you know I like, if you like me:

2000
Does anyone remember how fantastically catchy ‘Bohemian Like You’ was? The silly video with the karaoke-thing, etcetera? There was a lot of decent music coming out around this time, and I remember being consistently barraged by good albums. This wouldn’t continue through the rest of the decade. Californication would be the last time I would enjoy RHCP as a band.

In 2001 I succumbed to sexy pop for a favorite song. Seriously. That song is awesome. Frusciante’s album was magical, and I think my video of the year is really the only choice.

Dave Grohl makes the list twice as a drummer in this year, and probably would have taken the album too, but from out of nowhere came what would change my mind about Canadian music in that I ended up following almost every project that Broken Social Scene had outside of it’s main band after hearing the album and seeing them live.

2003
I remember the moment I fell in love with Sit down Stand up. It was on the eve of the album coming out, and Radiohead played a live show that was broadcasted to Silver City theatres in Canada. When that song reached the crescendo into the fast ‘raindrops’ part, I was almost on the edge of my seat. Which I could also say about the Metric show. They were second on a bill of three that featured Hot Hot Heat as the main act, and were still relatively new, but downright sexy and exciting to watch. I’ve since seen them six more times.

2004
The second time a John Frusciante album makes my favorite albums. This album is widely regarded as his most ‘mainstream’ and is a fantastic, great-amazing thing, just like the Bowie concert, which was the last concert I ever saw at the ol’ Winnipeg arena.

2005
I’ll never forget how many phone calls I got when Nine Inch Nails annouced that they’d be coming here. It was the first time I was going to see them, after being a fan since 1994. My phone rang off the hook, and for one song during that show, so did my emotions. I kinda quietly, completely lost it, and felt like a dummy. Ha! By the way, that Esthero video’s freakin’ hot, and I agree with every sentiment in it.

I saw Wintersleep by myself in front of about 30 people, and skipped work to get there. When I talked to the singer about this, he dedicated a song to me. How nice. As far as Nausea goes, I don’t know what it is about that song, but something in it drives me nuts. It’s way too good and it doesn’t even realize it.

National Anthem of Nowhere has become my most listened to track on last.fm, and I think the Wintersleep album has since become one of my most listened to albums. They will both continue to rise in numbers. If I did a song by song and album by album breakdown, these two would make somewhere within the top three. And it’s pretty cool that I got to see Mike Patton in any of his 34i83902439024 bands, but Peeping Tom blew me away.

God, In Rainbows is great. And Secret Machines live, that’s something so completely underrated, I don’t even know how to describe it to you. The power that they have to get an audience going, is a sight to behold and yet there were so few people there that I was kind of disappointed in the turnout. Oh, and yes, I realize that Feist gets the video 2 years running for the same album, but they’re both great videos.

2009
I know, it hasn’t been that long, but Them Crooked Vultures was exactly the album I wanted it to be. So there.  And as far as Spookey’s song goes, this is the second time I’ve talked about it in my blog. Previously appeared in my “songs you won’t see in Guitar Hero or Rock band“, and it’s just something to behold. Metric’s video was perfect, it was the video that I wanted them to have. Something sweet and cute instead of overtly dorky like all of their other videos. As far as Leonard Cohen’s concert goes, I hadn’t been a huge fan beforehand, but was introduced, and BECAME a large fan because of how amazing that concert was. Everything he did was perfect. The singing, the sounds, the engagement with the audience was fantastic. Top five concerts in my life, that one.

Fresh Out The Oven é o nome do aparente 1° single do novo álbum de J.Lo – Love?. Super criativo como o próprio nome do álbum, a canção é um saco, e eu não sei por que estou fazendo esse review – essa música e seu respectivo clipe são pura bost# mesmo. Acho que tô só indignada de ver uma coisa dessas à essa altura do campeonato. Parece que Jennifer só mudou seu visual e estilo de canção pra seguir tendências atuais – uma coisa meio Kylie Minogue, David Guetta, quem sabe até uma Lady GaGa enrustida  - só que ficou mais Kylie do que Jennifer, se é que vocês me entendem. A impressão que fica é que, enquanto rappers e afins estavam dominando totalmente as paradas, foi bom associar sua imagem ao Bronx, Ja Rule e LL Cool J. Agora que a coisa está pendendo um pouco mais pro Dance Pop, de repente nos deparamos com cabelo curto, fashionismo barato (meio pobre, pra falar a verdade) e Pitbull. Se bem que colocar Pitbull em qualquer trabalho musical já é um erro fatal por si só…

Como diria Dado Dolabella : Jennifer traiu o movimento.

Alla är vi på väg mot något som kan kallas sin egen sanning. Många är vi som fastnar på vägen i vår rädsla för ensamhet, utanförskap, död osv.. och därför annamar en redan etablerad sanning. Ideologier, religioner mm. bidrar alla med sin sanning,  men oavsett hur mycket vetenskap, teologi, ideologi som styrker denna sanning så är det aldrig din egen sanning.  Söker man efter svar på en sanning utanför sig själv kommer man aldrig att finna den, för det är innuti oss själva som  svaret  finns. Den sanning vi får förmedlad utifrån är alltid någon annans sanning och genom att ta till sig den så får de som har denna uppfattning mer makt. Vi ger mao. bort makten över oss själva till krafter utanför och är därför lätta att kontrollera, manipulera då inte ens vet sanningen om oss själva. 

 Har vi däremot lärt oss att bygga upp en stark integritet och strävar efter att själva  ha kontrollen över våra egna liv så behandlar vi all information utifrån på helt andra sätt.  En auktorietet har inte rätt endast för att det är en auktoritet. En sanning är inte sann för att det finns miljoner som tror på den. Det som då är helt avgörande är ens eget omdöme och det är i allafall att vara på väg att hitta den. Vägen, utvecklingen är kaotisk många gånger och oftast står man där helt ensam i en oändlig öken där det inte finns någonting alls att hålla sig i. Ingen mamma, ingen pappa, ingen storebror, det kan inte finnas något alls där att utan dig själv. Utan att ha nått dit, så vet man ingenting, man vet inte vem man är, man vet inte hur världen ser ut, man vet inte mer än det som ens ego valt ut som sin sanning, men som  alltid endast är en bekräftelse av någon annans sanning.

Muy fuerte. ¡Una de las ex-concursantes de Curso del 63 se ha metido a “cantanta”! O eso, o es de las mozalbetas con fantasía en el pelo que graban con su videophone de última gama toda clase de pasajes aventureros que padecen en sus carnes cada fin de semana en el pubeto de turno. O en casa de su amiga Michelle, que papá, mamá y B.J. se han ido a Malibu Beach con los amigos a pasar un upper-middle-class week-end TOTAL. Agárrate.

Pues la joven Dafne de la que os presentamos su primer single y videoclip (TiK ToK) tiene un nombre de lo más elegantón, distinguido y que confirma la procedencia aristocrática de la muchacha: Ke$ha. Hasta ahí bien. Toleramos que para que te dejen entrar en cualquier estudio de grabación donde los que cortan el bacalao son Timbaland o Polow Da Don (no vayáis al baño todavía) tengas que tener algún signo de interrogación, o un símbolo de divisas o numérico en tu nombre de pila (PLUSES: si no llevas bragas, te producen la canción gratuitamente… si llegas al estudio únicamente con una gorra de los Lakers te graban el disco al completo, te aseguran un dueto con Sasha y te meten de asistenta del hogar a Lumidee. UN CHOLLO). Pero que esta mamarracha estudiante de Turismo (o en su defecto, dependienta del Pimkie) sin mayor talento que el tener cara de pie plano y sentirse orgullosa de ello haya conseguido alcanzar la polla de RedOne un contrato discográfico que le pague los empastes durante los próximos años nos plantea un duda, de ésas que ponen patas arriba nuestra razón de vivir:

¿Dónde está Cher?

La canción pues al menos es cuca, mucho pitidito, mucho synth, mucho Auto-Tune… vamos, puro sonido 2009 para dar el bombazo más allá de la tierra del Tío Sam. Eso sí, esto suena a plagio TOTAL del maravilloso Love at first sight de Kylie. Juzgad vosotros mismos. A pesar de no ser más que una pija de manual que se cree rebelde por llevar piercings en la nariz (¿he oído 1999?), Ke$ha lo está crujiendo en USA. Y no podemos seguir viviendo de Ace of Base, hay que mirar al futuro y estar a la última como sea.

El vídeo ratifica todo lo que pensamos nada más ver la portada del single: niña bien de Bel Air con ínfulas de reina del instituto, pero que tuvo que resignarse y tirarse a todo el equipo de rugby (eso incluye al entrenador… SUGA DADDY) como premio de consolación. ¡Ahora llega el momento de tu venganza, Ke$ha!

Pero mira que es patético el nombre.

Forget T-Mobile and their (admittedly still great but over engineered) Liverpool Street based corporate stunt, THIS is how you do a fabulous flash mob!

Hot men girating on a white sandy beach, an amazing choice of music and a rather well known drag queen. If we’d have tried doing this in the UK, we’d all have ended up on Blackpool beach with candy floss, a donkey or two and Lily Savage!

And I LOVE that they’ve included one of my favourite songs, “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” (Remix) by Deborah Cox!
