This week’s belated show was all about more new tunes and one older one – with The Parameter’s track ‘Pig City’.This song was in a way the epitome of any protester in the dying years of Joh Bjelke-Peterson’s Queensland. Otouto, Summer Cats and The Jezabels also were some good newies for this week, and of course with me only just posting an interview I had with Sally Seltmann recently, it came as a surprise that there was a new track from her, considering I thought it would come out next year.

The show also contained my promised interview with Freya & Alyx from spellbinding ambient-esque duo Kyü ahead of their show at the warehouse venue St Petersberg. Many thanks to them for coming in.

When seeing this band at the Newtown Festival a few weeks ago, my companion remarked that Kyü’s voices had a wildly minimal European aspect to it. Now I didn’t really agree on the comparison with a particular geographic region’s musical aspects, but I did agree that there was something slightly wildly minimal here. The track featured here ‘Sunny In Splodges’ was a track which really did blew me away especially as the instrumentation utilised was a xylophone processed through a sampler kind of thing, a tom drum and two soaring harmonic voices. I can’t actually wait to hear more stuff from this duo who have a lot of things going for them, considering they have won both The Hopetoun Hotel Incentive and this years Sydney Uni Band Comp, which are both well deserved.

And they’ll be on this week’s radio show too, so keep a look out for that.

On the show today we explored a few new releases that have come out care of Laura Imbruglia and Music Vs Physics, who have taken a good right hand turn in terms of sound with their latest track ‘All The Little Pretty Horses’. Kyü are also continuing to impress me in a live lately as well and I am pretty excited by what they have in store for further tracks which hopefully will get an airing next week when they come in for a chat.

This week though in the interview stakes, I featured a chat I had with Henry Skerritt, lead singer and frontman for the seven piece outfit, The Holy Sea. It was an insightful discussion, and I actually can’t wait to transcribe the unedited interview as there was some really deep discussion about how one went about keeping a band with so many members together.

It’s that time of year again, when we all flock to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park for The Newtown Festival. The festival is put on by The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and all money raised it donated towards its services and programs, helping disadvantage people in the community.

Its just a gold coin donation and in return you get…Drum roll please….

En el Dojo Ryokan Veracruz se aplicaron exámenes a 11 alumnos aprobando todos ellos, Felicidades ossu esto el día 25 de Septiembre del presente año.

If you follow me on twitter, you would know that the reason why there hadn’t been any posts for a few days there was because I was enjoying myself too much in Newcastle attending This Is Not Art. I was intending to go to a few events being put on by the National Writers Young Festival, but in the end it seemed that the panels and events co-ordinated by the Sound Summit crew drew me in.

Now considering that the festival is now over, it may be a bit late to profile these guys. I enjoyed it that much though that I thought I’d share the sounds of a few Australian bands who played as part of the festival. There were some international players as well, like Tiny Vipers, The Vivian Girls, Ducktails & Pumice, who were all great in their own right. But considering this is an Australian music blog, here are a few tracks from bands that impressed me:

El Sensei Jaime Ortega informa que se llevarán a cabo evaluaciones de Grado (Kyu) en la zona de Veracruz:

I won’t be able to train as often as I usually do at my dojo starting next week because of another commitment two nights in a row and am thinking of checking the club at a local university to go there once a week or so instead. But they are part of JKA (the Japanese Karate Association) whereas my club is associated with the ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Association). We were with JKA too until recently. I don’t know about the politics but I hope I could train with the school club without having my ego bruised. The school website says they require a JKA certificate, otherwise I would have to wear a white belt and re-test. I so hope they recognize my rank! I don’t mind re-testing (it would be a hassle though) but it would be quite embarrassing not to get my current rank (4th kyu).

Held annually as an integral part of This Is Not Art (TINA), Sound Summit will celebrate it’s 10th birthday in 2009 over the October longer weekend – October 1 – 5, in Newcastle, NSW. Traditionally an electronic and hip hop conference and festival, in 2009 Sound Summit will drop it’s genres and broaden it’s scope, inviting independent artists from around Australia and internationally to idea-share, skill-up and brain dump.

MusicNSW is thrilled to announce the first batch of artists performing at Sound Summit 2009. At this year’s festival see the raw pop collages of Ducktails (US), the loveable scuzzy surf punk of the Vivian Girls (US), beautifully rambunctuous lo-fi rock of Pumice (NZ) and Ripley – a Cali based dj/ academic who’s just come back from Jamaica. Think smart reggaeton party.

Locally we’ll be showcasing the finest independent and innovative artists throughout the festival, including a showcase event where Sound Summit teams up with New Weird Australia, exploring the spaces of Renew Newcastle and the sounds of a new breed of Australian musicians. June 20th was the last day of Super Juniors third album promotions for sorry sorry and it’s you.

I will definitely miss them alot! hopefully they will make another single or MV soon!
