On November 26, 1968, English supergroup, Cream, played their last concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall.  As they exited the stage, the fans chanted  “God Save the Cream!”

Here they are doing “White Room” live with an intro from John Peel.

Hugely influential on modern rock, Cream helped develop a harder form of rock and influenced future groups in subgenres such as prog rock, jam bands, and metal.

Here’s my stoner metal cut of the week, “Hung Out to Dry” by Fu Man Chu. I’m a big Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) fan but Fu Man Chu escaped my attention until recently. The drummer from Kyuss is in the band (or was in the band at some point).

Founded in the early 90s in Southern California, “Hung Out to Dry” comes from We Must Obey, which was released in 2007 on Century Media (Records). This shit it heavy and the video has the best time machine sequence in the history of time machine sequences.

Soundcheck oli aika legendaarinen. On Colors katto tasot kuntoo ja ku me tultiin fuzzeinemme tuuttaamaan oli miksaajan ilme niiiin epätoivonen. Pakko myöntää, että melkeen ittiäki hävetti polkee pedaalia ku oli nii härski soundi. Keikan jälkeen sama mies kuitenki tuli hehkuttamaan miten pitkästä aikaa ei tuntunu keikan seuraaminen työltä. Kivaa tämä tämmönen. Myös rankkaa ku keikkapalkkio on kymmenen juomalippua per naama, jotka pitää tuhota kolmessa tunnissa.. Kiitän ihmisiä jotka tuli kattoon <3 Kaverit on mukavia. Kohta pitää mennä roudaan kamoja pois, pois ja elämä jatkuu. Huomenna tentti, ei just kiinnostais. Tänää 0is Absoluuttinen O. nelivitosessa. Livemusiikki vie kyllä voiton kaikesta. Varsinkin lavan paremmalla puolella. Kumpi se sitten lienee? En osaa päättää millä puolella hymyilen mieluummin. Molemmilla.

With the plethora of truly bad “supergroups” that have infested this planet in recent years (Chickenfoot anyone?), when the real deal comes along it is a shock to the system. When rumors began to swirl that the long awaited project from Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones was going to debut at The Metro in Chicago after Lollapalooza 2009 was over with, the buzz was pretty intense. Then the reviews of the show came out the next morning, and it appeared this was no mere hype. Them Crooked Vultures appeared to be the Real McCoy!

Before I get into the review, big kudos to Kimber Lanning over at Stinkweeds Records! Thanks to you I had this disc in my hands to listen to early on Tuesday. If you live in Phoenix, AZ, support local, independent music and shop at this great record store rather than hitting up one of those big chains that is killing the industry. I did say I would occasionally get on my soapbox …

A quick bio of Them Crooked Vultures, Tfronky-style
Now for the uninitiated, Dave Grohl told Mojo magazine in April 2005 that the next project he was interested in pursuing was a collaboration between him, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones. “The next project that I’m trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones playing bass. That’s the next album. That wouldn’t suck.” That kind of statement naturally created quite a stir. Grohl is one of the industry’s heavy hitters right now, with stellar work in the Foo Fighters and Nirvana. If you want to hear work of his from the wayback machine, check out Washington D.C. punk rock legends Scream. Grohl played on their last two albums. With Them Crooked Vultures he is once again behind the drum kit, and he destroys on the skins as well as ever.

Guitarist/vocalist Josh Homme has already carved out an impressive career with his work in Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and Eagles of Death Metal. Them Crooked Vultures is another fine feather in his cap. Homme and Grohl already have a history together from when Grohl played drums on the third QOTSA release Songs for the Deaf.

The third key element of this band needs no introduction. Dave Grohl and Josh Homme may be rock legends one day, but they added a true legend to Them Crooked Vultures with John Paul Jones on the bass. The most overlooked member of the legendary Led Zeppelin is an amazing musician, and the smooth but heavy grooves he adds to this band are incredible. I was a big fan of the work he also did with art-rock alternative musician Diamandra Galas.

The debut self-titled album
Here is something that immediately needs to be said about this album. Alan Moulder mixed Them Crooked Vultures. Now I have a feeling there will not be too many of you out there that will realize the significance of this, but when I was reading the track listing on the back of the disc, I went nuts when I saw his name. Alan Moulder was a big-time producer during the heyday of Creation Records back in the late eighties-early nineties. I would be referring to work from incredible bands such as Swervedriver, My Bloody Valentine and Ride. He also worked with Lush, Smashing Pumpkins and the Jesus and Mary Chain, but the one disc he will always be known for working on was the 1994 release of The Downward Spiral from Nine Inch Nails. Alan Moulder has some serious credibility in the industry, and his handiwork is very evident on Them Crooked Vultures.

No One Loves You & Neither Do I leads off this album, and the force of this trio is immediately evident. The rhythm section of Jones and Grohl is outstanding and complemented well with Homme’s unique vocal style and volatile guitar work. The first four tracks are similar in the sense each possesses a sound that bulls forward in an aggressive manner, but with each possessing a strong sense of melodicism as well. This is basic rock and roll done very, very well.

There is a brief lull during songs 6-8, but the intensity picks right back up from track seven through the end. I was really impressed with the song structure of each tune on the disc. Them Crooked Vultures may be stripped down rock and roll, but there is nothing basic about the make-up of each song.

Now, some of you may have noticed I skipped track five. For my money Elephants was the highlight of this album, a brutal track with extreme tempo changes and a sound that pummels you into submission. Elephants puts the power and talent of Them Crooked Vultures on full display. This song has to be absolutely insane live.

What an impressive debut, and what a way to redefine the whole theory of the supergroup. The wait was well worth it folks. Go out and pick up this amazing piece of work today!

Enquanto uns perdem tempo noticiando que Tico Santa Cruz (Detonautas) tá implorando para disse que gostaria de assumir os vocais nos Raimundos e ganhar um troco extra fazer uma turnê com eles, chiveta mostra rock — rock de verdade, sabe, nada que o Rick Bonadio produziria ou tocaria um pianinho vagabundo.

Esse ano nasceu uma banda que mesmo que dure pouco tempo já entrou pra história. Seu nome, Them Crooked Vultures, seus membros?

No baixo/teclado/piano/voz Sir John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), na bateria/voz Dave Grohl (Scream, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Probot etc) e na guitarra/voz Josh Homme (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal).

Ao vivo o Them Crooked Vultures ganha ainda o multi-instrumentista Alain Johannes (que entre tocar e produzir já trabalhou com Chris Cornell, No Doubt, Mark Lanegan, Jack Irons, Puscifer, Spinnerette etc).

u bent er misschien van op de hoogte, misschien ook niet. Over één ding zult u het waarschijnlijk eens zijn met mij.

Als leden van Led Zeppelin, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana en Foo Fighters samen muziek maken, dan klinkt dat hoogstwaarschijnlijk WAUW.

Wel, dan zal ik u ongetwijfeld blij kunnen maken met de wetenschap dat deze WAUWheid al in de winkel ligt met het heel toepasselijk getitelde album Them Crooked Vultures.
Van, hoe raadt u het, Them Crooked Vultures.

Nu, mijn generatie zal waarschijnlijk enkel familiar zijn met het werk van Josh Homme en Dave Grohl, nochtans zullen de échte rockfanaten ogen richten naar John P. Jones.

Ik vind ze alledrie té gek! En vooral dat album. U kunt het dus al kopen in de winkel, en ik ga u daar VOORAL niet bij tegenhouden want het klinkt echt geweldig.

Them Crooked Vultures!

Via een uiterst geweldige bron ( 3 x raden welk? ) ben ik het nu even aan het beluisteren. En mijn oordeel? U leest het hier;

1. No one loves me & neither do I;  Ik vind het wel goed dat Dave Grohl zijn talent heeft verdergezet met de Foo Fighters. En de drummer van de foo’s mag er heus zijn. Maar dit liedje, ja, die drum is gewoon geweldig. Misschien niets speciaals voor echte drummers. Doch vind ik NOLM&NDI geweldig door zijn drums. ( Maar die gitaren op het einde zijn wel OMG! )

2. Mind eraser, no Chaser; Mag het ook ietsje sneller? Een beetje poppier? Een beetje meer meezingbaar? Tuurlijk! Daar hebben we MENC voor! Meepringen is een must.

3. New fang; Is het u al opgevallen hoeveel liedjes er beginnen met een piano- of gitaarintro? Is het u dan ook eens opgevallen dat dit eigenlijk echt zeer onorigineel is? TCV doet het met drums. Strak. Lekker. Headbangend. Mmmm…

4. Dead end friends; Ja. Het begint waarschijnlijk eentonig te worden als ik zeg hoe geweldig die drums en die gitaren hier samengaan. Spijtig. Want het is écht!
Dit liedje zou denk ik, hélemaal niet misstaan op een festivalweide. Beeldt u het zich eens in; het publiek dat gek gaat op ‘ tu – tututu-tututu-tututututututu’.

5.  Elephants; MENC was toch nog te traag, mag het nog wat sneller? JA! Komaan, headbangen die handel!
Mag ik er ook nog op wijzen wat voor een sterk staaltje technische kunst dit liedje is? Die stopjes zijn echt pokkemoeilijk om te spelen met een voltallige band. Zéér mooi gedaan!

6. Scumbag blues; Die titel alleen al! En het klinkt ook geweldig. Ook iets opzwepender dan de anderen. Minder headbang, meer ritmisch bewegen of dansen zoals dat af en toe ook wordt genoemd. Extra punten voor dat basachtige geluidje. Dat maakt het af!

7. Bandoliers; U hebt het misschien al eens opgevangen; zo weinig akkoorden, zo veel liedjes: plagiaat wordt onvermijdelijk. Dit liedje is, geen plagiaat hoop ik, en toch klinkt het aangenaam bekend. Het is zo een soort liedje dat je na 1x luisteren al bijna vanbuiten kent ( qua melodie dan toch!). Oh en dat einde ( lees: de laatste 2 minuten) klinkt echt PRACHTIG!

8. Reptiles; AMAI. Jaja, een grote amai. Misschien klinkt het raar, maar dit liedje doet mij op de een of andere manier denken aan the nightmare before christmas. Een beetje theatraal, chaotisch… Die bas klinkt ook lekker. Goed nummer! Of zoals iemand commente op ‘ de bron’; ‘ It’s like sex in my ears.’

9. Interlude with ludes; Dit klinkt eng. Maar niet eng goed, gewoon eng. Alsof er iemand die achter je staat, in je oor fluistert, maar dan al treiterend. Raar liedje! Wat een impact muziek kan hebben, hé!

10. Warsaw or the First Breath You Take: Het duurt even voor het ritme erin zit, maar als je het eenmaal vast hebt, dan klinkt dit echt ZO geweldig! Bijna jazzy. Erg leuk!

11. Caligulove; Dit is een goed nummer. Niet dat het beter is als de 10 vorigen. Hoewel het direct meezingbaar is. Leuke songtekst ook!

12. Gunman; Leuke effectjes op de gitaren hier! De strodfe doet me op de een of andere manier ook denken aan ‘My propeller van Arctic Monkeys.

13. Spinning in daffodils; Mo how seg! Hier wordt zowaar een piano bespeeld! In de intro! Ja. Je kan veel van TCV zeggen maar ze blijven je toch verrassen. Hoewel ik erg uitkeek naar dit album was ik een beetje sceptisch; Josh Homme heeft namelijk de neiging om op elk liedje waar hij aan mee werkt zijn stempel te drukken. Dat is hier ook overduidelijk gebeurd en toch blijft het fris. Elk liedje is anders. En maar goed ook!

Overall? WAUW! Them Crooked Vultures kreeg al vaak het label supergroep opgeplakt, maar ze zijn het ook waardig. Na de vele lovende reacties vanop de festivalweide, leveren ze ook een heel mooi album af.

Quotering? Moeilijk. Wat denk je van een 7.5 op 10? Goed plan?

Met andere woorden; KOPEN, DIE HANDEL! Nu!

Okay I literally started up a blog because of the album reviews I have seen on “Them Crooked Vultures”.

I mean that was my sole basis for this blog but I will talk about other stuff I am sure.

I cannot believe Rolling Stone Magazine only gave TCV a 3.5 out of 5 star review.

Un-fucking believable.

Name ONE song on this album that is not the best rock song you have heard in the past YEARS.

Every song is jammed packed with love, multi layered grooves, unexpected turns, vocals that make you feel like your on a desert with a fast car and an even faster girl.

Josh Homme (The least famous guy)

The first album I heard was Queens of the Stone Age “songs for the deaf”. I almost creamed my pants. Songs like “The Sky is Falling”……just amazing I then went on to hear every QOTSA song every made, Nirvana is without a doubt a stable on culture and Led Zeppelin?

All these guys are incredible…….and this album does not fall short.

You know what? Fuck it. I give up on society.

You fucked up on this one.

Myślałem, że to będzie najtrudniejsza do napisania recenzja w całym moim życiu. Myliłem się. Już czuję, że przyjdzie mi to łatwo i bezboleśnie Josh Homme, John Paul Jones i Dave Grohl w końcu pokazali swoje dziecko, jest nim oczywiście płyta Them Crooked Vultures, zatytułowana tak samo jak nazwa zespołu.

Well if sex is a weapon, then smash, boom, pow, how you like me now?
Album otwiera No One Loves Me & Neither Do I, trochę rozleniwia, a raczej relaksuje słuchacza na samym początku, aby w jego środku wybuchnąć z całej siły. Głowa macha się sama, jakby chciała dotrzymać towarzystwa potupującej nodze. Można było spodziewać się po tej produkcji jednego – zabaw kanałami, dużo reverbów i ogólnie majstersztyka producenckiego (trzeba nadmienić, że zespół postanowił sam wyprodukować płytę, choć stawiam, że mimo wszystko pomagał im w tym Alain Johannes, który również koncertuje z bandem jako gitarzysta rytmiczny), No One Loves Me & Neither Do I delikatnie stara się to potwierdzić. Kolejny utwór to Mind Eraser, No Chaser, czyli drugi singiel. Dużo energii i radosnego grania, nic odkrywczego, ale sprawia mnóstwo radości. Aha, jeszcze jedno słowo: puzon Lecąc w kolejności trafiamy na pierwszy singiel, znany już pewnie wszystkim New Fang. Jaki jest? Taki, jaki powinien być singiel, czyli przyjazny dla większości słuchających w radiu. Jest więc skocznie i pozytywnie, dużo klimatu dodają slide’y gitarowe.

Is it dead at the end of the road?
Dead End Friends był moim faworytem już wtedy, kiedy słyszałem nagrania koncertowe zespołu. Na albumie jest mniej agresywny, bardziej przemyślany i ku mojemu zdziwieniu – musiał dojrzewać aż przez kilka przesłuchań płyty. Za to gdy już dojrzał, odwdzięczył się niesamowitym “smakiem”. Najmocniejszą stroną jest wg mnie tekst samej piosenki, który momentami potrafi spowodować ciarki na plecach, przedramionach, jajach i kto-tam-wie-jeszcze-czym. Następnie atakują nas słonie, czyli Elephants. Atakują dosłownie – rozpędzająca się gitara nabiera szybkości po to, żeby zwolnić po nokaucie. Jeśli ktoś zapyta Was kiedyś o to, czym jest groove w rockowej piosence, puśćcie mu właśnie Elephants. Jest może ciut przydługi, ma to jednak swój cel. Po raz kolejny muszę pochwalić przy tej okazji teksty utworów, Josh w dobrej formie (jak zwykle, jeśli chodzi o pisanie), ale o dobrych formach później, bo czas przejść do Scumbag Blues, czyli chyba najlepszego utworu na całej płycie. Główny riff, który wprasowuje się w mózg tak głęboko, że nawet Mind Eraser nie pomoże Wam wyrzucić go stamtąd. Położycie się do łóżka, a tam po pościeli nadal będzie pląsał się Scumbag Blues. Utwór przypomina mi mocno niektóre dokonania Cream (głównie ze względu na świetny falset) i choć nie jestem fanem tego zespołu, to jest to jak najbardziej komplement. W pewnym momencie Scumbag rozwija się dość horrorowo, aby zaraz potem zostać zdominowanym przez spokojne odgrywanie głównego riffu przez bas, który dopiero w tej piosence pokazuje jaja wielkie jak berety. Dwie solówki po prostu rozkładają na łopaty.

Prepare and take aim, and fire!
Bandoliers potwierdza moje pierwsze stwierdzenie, które nasunęło mi się po dziewiczym przesłuchaniu albumu – nie ma tutaj miejsca na popisówy solowe muzyków, jest to po prostu solidne, szczere, rockowe granie, które wypłynęło z serc, bez niepotrzebnego spinania się. Sam Bandoliers za każdym razem powoduje u mnie niesamowicie duży przypływ sił, coś bardzo pozytywnego, choć bynajmniej nie w warstwie tekstowej. Bardzo duże nadzieje wiązałem z Reptiles. Czy rozczarowałem się? Absolutnie nie! Choć wykorzystanie akustycznych gitar było na pewno wielkim zaskoczeniem Jeśli miałbym opisać samą kompozycję utworu jak najkrócej, użyłbym sformułowania: pozytywnie popierdolona And I know, it’s like cleaning up after an orgy, you weren’t sober. I wish someone would burn this place to the ground…

La-la-la-la-la-la…
Interludes With Ludes to horror w zupie o smaku Desert Sessions. W sam raz do puszczenia w ciemnym, zadymionym barze – przybrudzone gacie gości zapewnione! Interludes przypomina trochę linią melodyczną I’m Designer z repertuaru Queens of the Stone Age, jednak jako całości – jak już wspomniałem – bliżej jest do Desert Sessions, w szczególności Like a Drug. Warsaw or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up to podróż do najciemniejszych zakamarków wyobraźni, a zarazem kolorowy odjazd po kwasie wspierany przez organy Hammonda. Kawałek wydaje się też być świetny do chlania, trzeba sprawdzić przy następnej okazji Warsaw to przy okazji kolejna piosenka, która na myśl przywodzi mi bardzo mocno Lullabies to Paralyze QotSA (chodzi dokładnie o drugą, mroczną część płyty). Mam nadzieję, że mając tak nazwany utwór w swoim repertuarze, zespół odwiedzi nasz kraj w najbliższym czasie. Do lata jeszcze sporo czasu, więc kto wie (gwoli ścisłości: latem ma być wskrzeszony Queens of the Stone Age – w końcu!)?

I’m the trigger, quick to fire, punctuate between the eyes…
Caligulove to w zasadzie świetna solówka na klawiszach z doklejoną resztą utworu. Ale doklejonego nie na odwal, żadnych ochłapów! Świetne brzmienie basu (prawie jak syntezator momentami, wyczuwam tutaj lampowego wzmaka Orange :>) i niezgorsze gitar. Polecam serdecznie końcówkę Caligulove Desert Sessions ponownie kłaniają się w pas Gunman podszedł mi najmniej. Fakt, nóżka chodzi, ogólnie to kawałek niemal dance’owy, ale słaby refren przypominający Erę Vulgaris (utwór, nie album) psuje mi cały efekt. No ale cóż, kiedyś nie podchodziło mi Misfit Love, a teraz mógłbym słuchać go na okrągło Płytę zamyka NIESAMOWITY i niszczący klimatem Spinning in Daffodils. Przerażająco smutne klawisze wprowadzają w psychodeliczny (zastanawiałem się czy nie użyć słowa “psychiczny” w przypadku tego utworu) klimat reszty. Nawet The Blood is Love i Someone’s in the Wolf chowają się pod stół, gdy słyszą nadciągający Spinning in Daffodils z szalejącym, metalicznym basem w przejściu. Tak właśnie minęło 66 minut przygody nazwanej Them Crooked Vultures.

Ta płyta jest dokładnie tym, czym powinna być. Może nie do końca tym, czym chciałbym, żeby była, ale wystarczyło pierwsze przesłuchanie, abym chwycił o co właściwie w tym wszystkim chodziło. A chodziło o solidne i szczere granie, którego tak mało w ostatnio w rockowym światku. Cóż, nie jest to zdecydowanie płyta dla lubujących się w grubych, spoconych, pląsających się po scenie lezbach i fanów spedalonych indie-rockowych zespołów. To płyta dla fanów świetnej muzyki.

Ocena: 9.5/10

Suelen decir de ellos que son la banda sonora perfecta para escuchar en el desierto… a mi no me apetece una puta mierda estar rodeado de cactus y coyotes para apreciar este demoledor grupo, sobre todo de su trilogía compuesta por Blues From The Red Sun , Welcome To Sky Valley y And The Circus… tres discos memorables repletos de riffs de guitarra aplastantes y una interpretación vocal personal como pocas a cargo de John Garcia . Su guitarrista Josh Homme alcanzaría luego el éxito a nivel comercial con Queens Of The Stone Age , pero son KYUS los que hubieran merecido ese éxito aunque acambio consiguieron el status de leyenda que se merecen. Los fundadores de lo que se llamó en denominar Stoner Rock y amenudo relacionados con el Rock “fumeta”…. El que necesite estar fumado para escuchar esto es que es gilipollas…

Here’s the first single, titled “New Fang”, from Them Crooked Vultures’ eponymous debut album.

I componenti di questo nuovo supergruppo non sono certo né poco noti né novellini, ma ciascuno a modo suo ha già segnato il corso della storia del rock. Alla voce troviamo un certo Josh Homme (Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age), alla batteria c’è un certo Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) e al basso… rullo di tamburi… John Paul Jones dei Led Zeppelin!

Dopo aver esordito sul palco il 9 agosto a Chicago e aver già suonato un’altra quindicina di date in giro per gli States, il Canada e l’Europa (alla Brixton Academy di Londra hanno aperto per gli Arctic Monkeys, il cui ultimo album “Humbug” è stato prodotto proprio da Josh Homme), oggi i Them Crooked Vultures hanno postato in streaming su YouTube il primo singolo dal loro album d’esordio omonimo, che sarà pubblicato il 17 novembre dalla DGC/Interscope Records negli Stati Uniti e dalla Sony/BMG nel resto del mondo.

Riusciranno i nostri eroi a creare una proposta musicale valida e interessante a prescindere dal loro illustre passato? Riusciranno ad essere considerati per quello che sono, più che per quello che sono stati? Io ho molta paura, ma a voi l’ardua sentenza!

Ascoltiamoci dunque New Fang, il primo vagito di questa band che spero abbia molto da regalarci. E se il brano vi piace, dal 2 novembre sarà in free download!

Masakra, wiem

A bit late, but what the heck… Them Crooked Vultures, the band of Queens of the Stone Age-frontman Joss Homme, Foo Fighters-frontman Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin-bassplayer John Paul Jones will be releasing their highly anticipated  debut-album on November 17th.

The band has kept all of their doings behind closed doors. Nothing has leaked onto the internet so far. And that’s a hard task now a days with everything being leaking out.

I for one, can’t wait for the album to be released. I think it’s going to be the album of the year. So I’m keeping my hopes up!
