http://www.crackup.com.ar/recomendados.html

La palabra muda
Jacques Rancière

Eterna cadencia

240 páginas

Precio: $ 55.-

Biisi on kuultu useissa elokuvissa, mutta ehkä parhaiten jäänyt mieleen tästä The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, jossa pääosissa olivat Dolly Parton ja Burt Reynolds. Ja mistäs tämä biisi oikein kertoikaan…

Nippelitietoa: Saan järkyttäviä hepuleita kuullessani radiossa toimittajan lausuvan bändin nimen “tset tset toppi”!

I’m back from quite a trip and was glad to wake up in my own bed. Usually I am organized and have written up a few posts for the blog but since things were hectic around here I didn’t have a chance.

I traveled to a bunch of places in Oregon and did a lot of driving. I went from one end of the state to the other not staying too long in places but getting an idea for future trips. It was a bit cold so I didn’t camp out. I love camping!!!

<img class="size-full wp-image-1081" title="pict0681" src="http://elizabethtool.wordpress.com/files/2009/04/pict0681.jpg" alt="IT WAS FREEZING IN KLAMATH FALLS!!!
From Klamath Falls I headed to Lakeview, Oregon but since I go there all of the time I didn’t take pictures. I was just passing through….

ABERT LAKE ON THE WAY TO BURNS FROM LAKEVIEW

The weather wasn’t good to take a picture of Abert Rim but I will do a post on it later.

I took more pictures between Burns and Ontario but I need to get the pictures developed. I didn’t stay in Ontario but filled up with gas and headed for Baker.

After Baker I headed to La Grande but didn’t take a lot of pictures. I really want to go back to that area and spend more time. There are a bunch of cute towns on the way to Joseph, which is very pretty.

INFO ABOUT LA GRANDE

I went to Pendelton, home of the Pendelton Round-up rodeo but since I was headed to visit friends I pretty much just drove through town and headed for the Columbia Gorge which will be a seperate post. I stayed the night in The Dalles. At this horrible hotel called the Oregon Motor Motel.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1101" title="pict0713" src="http://elizabethtool.wordpress.com/files/2009/04/pict0713.jpg" alt="I WOULD NOT GET INTO THIS SHOWER IN THE OREGON MOTEL IN THE DALLES, OREGON.
at least the sheets were clean. There was no way I was stepping in there!!!

I took off from The Dalles and got breakfast in Hood River I don’t think I took any photos it is way too commercial. So I left. The coffee was great though! After visiting some waterfalls I went to Corvallis, Oregon close to where I grew up.

ANOTHER FREE MASON PLACE IN CORVALLIS, OREGON

….Ladies and gentlemen! Start Your Engines!!

And so we did start our engine today and (finally) hit the highway, eyes wide with excitement and atlas at the ready. Fittingly, I remember driving into Portland for the first time almost thirteen years ago on route 84, cursing at all the wind, driving rain, and tractor trailers.

Today? Same thing, only different direction. I wanted to post the photo below (taken last summer on a day-trip to Lyle) as my departure scenario; a warm and fuzzy image of the highway heading east through the Gorge, gently waving good bye to all our friends in Portland.

But that’s actually a mirage. The real image you need to see is one of tidal wave splashes from a semi-truck’s tires, wind gusts coming from every direction, and me with a death grip on the steering wheel. Shanna, on the other hand, is happy as a clam in the passenger seat, rocking out to the road trip tunes, and celebrating the start of our journey. I can’t help but think how much it would really suck if we got into an accident on the first day of our trip, within the first hour. Let me rewind for a second…

A couple of nights ago, mi amigo y yo celebrated with a fine cigar and a single malt Scotch on our deck. The whisky, a 12 year Glen Garioch, was a fitting drink for our departure, as we’ll be in Scotland soon. I appreciated this moment of relaxation, good conversation, and mutual appreciation of the good things in life– lord knows the past few weeks have been anything but relaxing. Whoever told me quitting your job, selling off your possessions, saying goodbye to all your friends, and leaving the country is easy was LYING. But I’ve got my start and I have a feeling I shouldn’t be complaining about this.

In any case, we spoke about many things including the drive back East, and the joy of some sun and warmth on our trip. Today was far, far from that. At one point past Pendleton, we drove through driving snow and crawled into La Grande about 4 hours ago. I wish I had some great reviews on a local wine or our dinner, but I’m afraid Quiznos and bottled water just aren’t that exciting.

One of my goals on this trip is to taste a local wine from every state (and country) I pass through. Tomorrow, the great potato state of Idaho will be on the menu. Riesling anybody?

With drier, warmer roads in mind,

Jared

NCAC has been following the case of Picasso at the Lapin Agile in La Grande Oregon for the past month or so. After receiving a call from a concerned parent, we wrote a letter to the Superintendent explaining how and why his decision to cancel the Steve Martin play was, well, wrong. Unfortunately, a little saber rattling from New York wasn’t enough to do the trick, nor did local protest persuade the school board, who elected ( in a close 4-3 vote) to uphold the decision. This prompted local university faculty and students to voice support for an off campus production, something that was in the works, and has received quite a boost now that renowned comedian author Steve Martin has stepped in. Martin made his appearance in La Grande in the form of a letter published in the local paper on March 13. He playfully takes on some the criticisms leveled against the play:

I have heard that some in your community have characterized the play as “people drinking in bars, and treating women as sex objects.” With apologies to William Shakespeare, this is like calling Hamlet a play about a castle. This play is set in an actual bar in Paris that was frequented by Picasso, a historical site that still exists today.

While Martin recognized that there are lines that some parents may find objectionable, his letter ultimately affirms the merit of performing the play, and ends with what find to be a very decent proposal:

To prevent the play from acquiring a reputation it does not deserve, I would like to offer this proposal: I will finance a non-profit, off-high school campus production (low-budget, I hope!), supervised and/or directed by Mr. Cahill and cast at his discretion, so that individuals, outside the jurisdiction of the school board but within the guarantees of freedom of expression provided by the Constitution of the United States, can determine whether they will or will not see the play, even if they are under 18. I predict that the experience will not be damaging, but meaningful.

NCAC to Martin: Good on you Steve.

It’s been quite uneventful, despite my having a few stories to work on. One thing of note: snow.

Yes, I wrote about snow before, but today was different. It was a snowstorm – at least that’s what I’d call it. Maybe I’ll get some video uploaded, if not just pictures.

Anyway, I figured it was time I posted more links to my stories that have run lately. Thing is, if I didn’t say before, our paper doesn’t post every story that runs in print online, so I can only share a few…

There’s the one about a girl and her sheep (yes), a quick and generic piece about the agriculture census, this one about a lady and her mail from 1987 that was picked up by the Associated Press, and today’s article about this weekend’s soup supper fundraiser for a local domestic violence shelter. Oh, and there was a not-that-great video on the sheep story that I shot on my point-and-shoot.

Besides that, I’m still doing the Daniel fast, glad the weekend’s just about here and slightly upset that some sources haven’t gotten back to me for stories. Eight weeks to go.

I have been slightly misled about the mountains in Oregon. I believed the Cascade Range was not only the preiminent mountain range in Oregon, but the only one really worth seeing. Certainly, the largest peaks in the state come from the mighty Cascades – Mt. Hood tops the list at 11,249 feet in elevation, followed by Mt. Jefferson (10,497 feet), Three Sisters (South 10,363 feet , Middle 10,047 feet and North 10,085 feet), Mt. McLoughlin (9,495 feet) and Mt. Bachelor (9,068 feet). There are a handful of other peaks that follow in the 8000+ elevation. What I didn’t know was that if you travelled northeast to the right-hand corner of the state, you’ll find yourself in a wondrous place called the Wallowas. And what I didn’t know ended up delighting me to eat my own words about which mountains are really worth the view in Oregon.

The Wallowas Range runs about forty miles with the highest point being Sacajawea Peak, with an elevation of 9,838 feet – the tallest Oregon mountain outside of the Cascade Range. The range runs craggy like the Rockies and makes for an impressive landscape. Most of my Portland friends have never even heard of the Wallowas – so it’s never overrun with tourists. It’s a great camping destination with a beautiful lake and river, both sharing the Wallowa name. To get to Wallowa Lake, you drive 72 miles east of La Grande on I-84, and wind through the quaint little town of Joseph, named for Old Chief Joseph, the leader of the Wallowa Band of the Nez Perce tribe. A sentimental landmark is the monument to Old Chief Joseph, nestled under a tree with dream catchers, feathers and braided sweetgrass dangling from its limbs. The monument leads into the campgrounds around Wallowa Lake. Take the gondola to the summit of the Wallowas to get a bird’s eye view of the mountain range and the sprawling valley. It’s one of the most breath-taking views in all of the northwest.

Just don’t be afraid of the squirrels and chipmunks that come right up to you – they’re friendly, fearless creatures. Even the deer don’t get startled easily by people – I had never seen anything like it, as two deer came right up to our screened door one afternoon just to check out what we were doing. Russell’s At The Lake is a great spot for a beer, provisions and live music. Wallowa Lake Lodge makes for lovely accommodations, but there are also plenty of camp sites and rustic cabins to rent. The Wallowas are one of Oregon’s best kept secrets.

So I decided that before I lay the deep words on you I would post a picture to lighten the mood a little bit. Just so you all are clear, everything is ok. All the pictures I post, though they may have something to do with what is going on in my life, they are art. Look at them for that. The art.

This was taken when I went to visit my mom in Eastern Oregon, a place called Morgan Lake. It was an epic lake with beautiful reflections, as you can see.

Anyway… Jake and I are going to take pictures downtown tomorrow if weather permits and if it does then my next post will be the second part of my mini-series. IT. WILL. BE. GOOD. Make sure to check back.

Check out her work. She also recently had her senior show in La Grande where she got her B.A. in Fine Art and will be getting an M.A. in teaching. I love it! I haven’t talked to her since last week but I hope she sold many a “house” at the show.

If you’re interested in any of the ceramics you see here, contact me at jaspitzer31@mac.com and I’ll connect you with her!

Shop on!
