What a great tournament to watch. Not only were the players top-notch but the stream quality was amazing. This is the first time I’ve watched anything through Justin.tv and I was very impressed. There were hardly any streaming errors or pauses and when I lost the signal temporarily it carried on from where it left off, rather than skipping a section and coming back in at the latest frame.

Credit to thestream.tv too. They have a very good broadcast system working there. Compared to EVO 2009 a few months ago this was like watching actual television. You remember that video box that you don’t need an internet connection for.

The live editing was brilliant too – cutting between the commentators (gootecks,  John Rog and occasionally camiwins) and the matches appropriately. The graphics weren’t great but they went with the general feel of the show, which was light-hearted and fun. All the players and commentators mostly know each other so there was some good banter – especially to and from Kai! Also the commercials were fine and infrequent and didn’t bother me at all – in fact they gave me a bit of time to get a drink etc.

John and Ryan (gootecks) did very very well with the commentary. They were informative and entertaining and were really in their element.

The tournament lasted from 10PM to 1:30AM GMT and was pretty much the perfect length for a live broadcast fighting game tournament. I barely slept the weekend of EVO so it was good to catch all the action without investing a ridiculous amount of time.

So Combofiend took it quite convincingly, Keno probably was the second best on the night and it was a pretty close final. He was awarded $500 cash and a fancy trophy. Both Keno and Kai took away a Madkatz SF4 Tournament Edition Stick. Gootecks stood in for Alex Valle who couldn’t make it in time due to traffic. He did well to commentate and play and was clearly a little frustrated after he lost (especially to Shizza).

Shizza was the highlight for me as he was a player I hadn’t heard of before. He has only recently moved to the professional scene and started on console! He also uses a pad! He represented hope and aspiration for players like me who look up to these pros and kinda wish we had a little bit of that going on. Yes he did make a few mistakes, he was clearly less experience in the professional competitive field – and he did throw out quite a few wake-up ultras that he really shouldn’t have. However he demonstrated great execution and seemed to know Chun Li inside out. He was also able to adapt fairly well and read his opponents. It’s a shame he didn’t win one of the arcade stick on offer

A highlights video has been promised, so as soon as that surfaces I’ll post it up. For anybody that missed it I suggest you check it out. For those that did see, it I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Gootecks is hosting a Street Fighter IV invitational tournament tonight at 10PM. you can catch it live at TheStream.tv. 8 of the top players in LA (and America in my opinion) duke it out for $500 cash.

In a move that I found completely shocking and may well be one of the top 10 controversies of 2009, Kid Sister has finally released her debut album.  Like no joke! I have a copy in my hands! It was one of two on sale at FYE. Which either means that she has a LOT of fans who bought her CD orrrrrrr that FYE only got 2 copies in their shipment. Regardless, it was one of their featured new releases and hopefully it’ll go somewhere cause Kid Sister rocks and the CD is pretty fantastic. Home is Where the Han Is: A Korean American Perspective on the Los Angeles Upheavals by Elaine H. Kim discusses the tragic aftermath of the LA riots that affected many Korean Americans. The riot began when four white police officers were found not guilty in the beating of Rodney King. Han recites the events as she depicts the hostility between the African Americans and Koreans Americans escalating from stereotypes. Kim writes in place of the silence that bestowed upon her people. She writes questioning the American dream and provides examples of how harsh white American responded to her piece in Newsweek magazine. Ironically, she speaks of the responses from white men and women who believe her ideas are pretentious are selfish. Some questioned Kim’s self-interest as they wondered how she could easily take for granted the opportunity to become a Berkley college professor. Others questioned why anyone would expect so much from the United States of America.  For example, Kim receives a letter that says, “At the same time some letters blamed me for expecting ‘freedom and opportunity’: it is a wondrous that folks such as you find truth in your paranoia. No one ever promised anything to you or your parents” (pg. 6). Finally others have outright told Kim and her people that if they do not like it in the United States, they should just go home.

What I come to realize throughout this piece is that sadly many people still cannot see the injustice streams of racism in the United States. Granted that in this tech savvy era, racist stereotypes are much more sophisticated. Prejudice images have become so deeply embedded in our culture that we take them as social norms. Often times I find myself to be the only one in my group of friends to understand why the media portray people a certain way or how the history of capitalism exploits minority culture for profit. I am furious that my parents strongly believe in the American dream and I am sicken to see that so many people do not understand how important it is to stand up for an invisible group, whether it be Asians, South Asians, or African Americans. I absolutely despise the fact that many minorities turn against each other and is masked by the similarity that all minorities were oppressed by the same kind. I personally feel as though we all should stand together and act as a force to overrule the ideals of the dominant ruling class. I empathize with Kim as she reveals all the responses she received from white Americans who insist that Kim is the racist one. I feel for her as she reads insult after insult from people attacking her intelligence to accusations of spreading propaganda.  I do not understand why some people; especially white Americans cannot let go of their imperialist thoughts and supreme nature. I just can’t understand why so many people chose not to see Kim’s perspective but were so easily convinced and offended that she questioned the so-called “American culture.” In a time where I so strongly believe in the movement of the invisible people, reading this article just makes me feel as though we haven’t made much progress.

VHS or Beta are the Indie-Rock band who regular appear to get caught up in the Dance scene.  Feel It When You Know is a track that recently underwent a bit of a facelift by La Riots and consequently, was turned into gold. Maybe this comment came a little too soon to the release of CFCF’s Midas Touch from just the other day but regardless, this remix is pretty kick-ass. The DJs are currently preparing for a small US tour beginning at the end of the month and lasting throughout most of December.  If you want to warm up to some great beats this winter check out their myspace for further tour info.

The House ethics committee said Thursday it’s investigating whether California Rep. Maxine Waters used her influence to help a bank in which her husband owned stock — and whether the couple benefited as a result. Waters is the No. 3 Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee and chairwoman of its subcommittee on housing. She has been an influential voice in the committee’s work to overhaul financial regulations, but came under scrutiny after former Treasury Department officials said she helped arrange a meeting between regulators and executives at OneUnited Bank last year without mentioning her husband’s financial ties to the institution.

When you’re on the CREW list for corruption in Congress – this year, as well as 2005 and 2006 – then someone is going to come after you. When you try to shut down a major newspaper (the Los Angeles Times) and a station it owns (KTLA) because they published allegations of nepotism, then someone is going to come after you. When the city was being torn to shreds by the riots in 1992 and you call it a ‘rebellion,’ then the hammer is going to fall. When you get into a racially-tinged hissy fit on the House floor about a denied earmark requested for a public school employment center that you named after yourself, then karma is going to nail your ass.

This was just a matter of time, and it’s about time.

Congratulations to President Obama on winning the Nobel Peace Prize!

But…

As I have already been reading, there are a number of folks that are already saying that he does not deserve it because he has not been in office long enough, which I have to agree with, but maybe the Nobel committee also included his early work in Chicago in helping to (re)build communities…

As you may or may not know, President Obama joins three other Presidents with this unique honor:

• President Theodore Roosevelt (R) in 1906
• President Woodrow Wilson (D) in 1919
• President Jimmy Carter (D) in 2002

And I will include Vice President Al Gore (D), who shared the prize in 2007.

What I find very interesting in this list, is that 80% of the Winners are Democrats, and the last three have been within my life time.

Personally, I think that Jimmy Carter has done far more good for the World since he left office. The man is amazing!

Anyhow, back to my thought…

With only one Republican winner on the list, what does that say about the Republican party?

So where have we come from several months ago when the Madison Hype Initiative was born? Where has the hype gone? What have we achieved?

Well there have been things. More gutter basement messes with the arrival of the Ghetto Division in Madison for the FMF ‘09 secret afterparty scene. Oh and don’t worry, there will be more to come from them next weekend. We may have even spawned our own movement to keep the shit hype…if you know what I’m talking about.

We had some good times this summer too. Part III of Dan Deacon came through to beat the terrace up for a little while. More and more indie music seems to dominate the scene and the now infamous Matt and Kim hit the scene…since they are a big deal now. Church.

Our friends Nigel and M$M came through once again and even LA Riots made the trip to our borough in southern WI.

From La Ville Apartments to Bangerville.
