Alright, last night I was able to knock out one more Iron Chef from my list as Yuki’s parents took us along with her sister to Iron Chef Italian Masahiko Kobe’s restaurant, Ristorante Massa. It’s located in a very cool neighborhood of Tokyo called Ebisu tucked away off a main street. It’s a simple little restaurant that seats only about 25-30 people. It was full when we were there, and probably is most nights due to his celebrity status and fantastic food.

There were two pre fix menu options. The one we opted for was the less expensive of the two (approx $65 compared to $85) as it offered one less dish than the other. Since none of us are fat Americans it seemed like the right choice. We could chose one from each category of Antipasto Freddo (3 choices), Antipasto Caldo (three choices), Primo Piatto (5 choices), Secondo Piatto (4 choices), and either a Dolce (5 choices) or Formaggio Plate (pick two out of 4 cheeses) followed by either tea or espresso. We washed down the meal with some Chianti Classico. I have pics of everything, but I’m only going to mention what I ordered otherwise this post will be way way way too long. This is already one of the longest introductions I’ve written. So, on to the food!

We each started off with the Oyster starter that was not part of the Pre Fix. It is probably the largest oyster I’ve ever eaten in my life! So fresh and clean it was simply served in its own juices with a little squeeze of lime and some rock salt. What more does a good oyster need?

Then they brought out an amuse bouche. Baked pasta filled with ricotta cheese, a little slice of pear, and an Italian parsley leaf. It almost reminded me of matzoh with cream cheese, a treat dear to my stomach for one week out of the year.

The Antipasto Freddo I ordered was a foie gras terrine with chamomile. It was served with smoked Ishikawa potatoes, a yuzu consomme jelly, Italian Arugula, and sprinkled with flaked red pepper.

My Antipasto Caldo of choice was a bit of a mis-translation. I thought I was getting duck confit, when it showed up we thought is was duck balls, but it turned out to be chicken gizzards. I actually preferred it to be balls since I’ve never eaten bird balls, but it was still outstanding! The gizzards were served on top of a kabocha puree with thinly sliced red onions that were soaked in cold water, a shishito pepper, and a pea pod.

The Primo Piatto, pasta course, I ordered was chitarra with cremini sauce. The sauce was as simple and delicious as could be…olive oil, garlic, and minced cremini mushrooms. There were big slices of sautéed cremini in it as well. With Kobe being the “Prince of Pasta” it was easily the best pasta in my life. Cooked to perfection, nice and al dente.

For the Secondo Piatto I got the beef, of course. A perfectly grilled strip loin to medium rare covered in a light mustard sauce and served with asparagus, a shiitake, a pea pod, and a slice of red pepper. Uichiro, Yuki’s dad, ordered his with black truffles on top. I wish I knew I could do that. He gave me a few of the truffles and they made an outstanding steak even better…as truffles always do.

I opted for the Formaggio instead of a Dolce. I chose the parmigiano and taleggio. He served it very typically with some dried fruits and sliced nut bread. I washed it down with lemon tea instead of espresso as I wanted to sleep later on.

Maki, Yuki’s sister, couldn’t finish her Tirimisu so I took it upon myself to not waste any food. It was served with kiwi sorbet and fresh fruit. Of course, it was the best tirimisu that I’ve ever digested.

Overall, this was by far the best Italian food I’ve ever eaten, hands down. And I’ve been to Italy. I’m sure there are places as good in Italy, but when Yuki and I went there we couldn’t afford any of the top restaurants. We ate some pretty damn good food there, but nothing as refined as this.

I have also said before that I didn’t think modern Italian food existed. I said that due to the lack of creativity and refinement of Italian food in Chicago (although, I have yet to eat at Spiaggia). At home it’s mostly humongous bowls of pasta with thick rich sauces that weigh you down. Nothing like Ristorante Massa where the portions were clean, fresh, perfectly sized, and creative modern takes on classics. I have a newfound respect for Italian food.

While I have eaten at Sakai’s, Michiba’s, and Chen’s restaurants, this is the first time that an Iron Chef has actually cooked for me. It was very exciting to see Kobe back in the kitchen when we walked in. I think there are two reasons Kobe was cooking for us. First, he only has one restaurant while the others all have numerous. So you know where Kobe will be when he cooks as opposed to it being a crapshoot for the others (I missed Sakai by 4 hours back when Yuki and I went to La Rochelle). Second, he’s still young at only 40 and still wants to create. Michiba is an old man and doesn’t cook anymore and I don’t think Sakai cooks too much anymore either.

No more Iron Chefs this trip as we head back to cold Chicago tomorrow. Next trip I’ll visit Iron Chef Japanese Nakamura Komei and maybe Honorary Iron Chef French Ishinabe Yutaka. Morimoto will have to wait as his Teppanyaki restaurant here in Tokyo starts at approx $300 a head!

Prices up in France Residential property prices in France increased by 0.1% in September and are now 2.8% higher than they were six months ago, according to the latest figures. Analysts believe that the real estate recovery is now underway as the figures from the FNAIM show that although prices fell overall by1% in the third quarter they rose in September and for the last six months they are now up by 2.8%. Overall during the last 12 months prices in the French market have fallen a total of 7.8% and there is much optimism that the upward movement in September will be the start of a trend that sees the country’s real estate market recovers in 2010. A healthy lending environment is also expected to aid the property recovery. Unlike the UK, a history of prudent lending in France where lenders do not allow borrowers’ total outgoings on finance payments to exceed one third of their total gross monthly income, has meant mortgage finance is still readily available. While mortgage finance in the UK remains extremely difficult to secure, especially at higher LTVs, the French banks continue to lend to borrowers with smaller deposits, even up to 100% LTV. (view properties with 100% LTV Mortgage) This level of LTV is also available to foreign buyers both for second homes and investment properties. As a result interest in the French property market from UK based investors is soaring as a result, with broker Athena Mortgages reporting a 21% rise in mortgage enquiries in the third quarter of the year compared with the second quarter. Mortgage completions in the third quarter were up 14% on over the previous three month period. Many British property investors are now looking across the channel to add to their portfolios given the difficulty securing competitive finance at home. The buy to let sector in France is attracting interest from property investors as depressed prices are boosting yields significantly in many areas. In the Normandy town of Alençon, for example, gross yields are 7.5%, while in the medieval town of Poitiers, western France, they are currently 7%. Nevers in central France boasts the highest gross yields of 7.6%. Other towns will good prospects are Clermont Ferrand in central France at 6.8% and Tours in the Loire at 6.4%. In some areas prices are significantly lower with popular destinations such as Biarritz in the south west and Cannes, Perpignan and Nice in the south of France all with properties that are 10% cheaper than a year ago. For a growing number of British property investors, France is fast proving the place to be, particularly given the availability of 100% mortgages, which circumvents the punitive exchange rate. While the UK property market remains very difficult for investors to access given ongoing lending constraints, there is now a real appetite to lend among the French lenders,’ said John Luke Busby, director, Athena Mortgages. ‘With extremely competitive borrowing rates, attractive prices and genuine product innovation, there’s a real buzz to the French property market at present,’ he added. L'abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel

Le second jour commence par la Rochelle, que nous parcourons à présent en pleine lumière matinale. De la médiathèque fraîchement construite, un petit bateau jaune appelé « yello » nous emmène vers le port historique, en franchissant l’entrée par deux massives tours, sur lesquelles on peut apercevoir les trous où entrait la chaîne qui servait à bloquer le port aux navires ennemis en cas d’attaque. Le plus célèbre siège de la Rochelle dura du 10 septembre 1627 au 28 octobre 1628 mené par le célèbre cardinal de Richelieu (à ne pas confondre avec un autre siège en 1572-1573). En effet, la ville était une place de sûreté accordée aux Huguenots par l’édit de Nantes d’Henri IV, un haut lieu de la religion réformée en France que le cardinal voyait comme une menace pour l’unité du royaume de France. Il décida alors de la prendre. La Rochelle fût soutenue par les anglais et le fameux Duc de Buckingham (on nage en plein Alexandre Dumas). Richelieu fortifia les îles de Ré et d’Oléron, coupa les lignes de ravitaillement terrestre, mais surtout, il construisit une immense digue, longue de 1500 mètres et haute de 20, dont les fondations étaient des navires coulés pour empêcher toute liaison entre la Rochelle et ses alliés. Le siège s’éternise, les « bouches inutiles » connaissent le sort terrible consistant à errer entre la Rochelle, dont ils ont été expulsés, et les lignes royales, qui leur tirent dessus. Affamés, les rebelles finissent par se rendre et le Roi accorde son pardon, en échange de la conversion au catholicisme. Un peu plus tard, la paix d’Alès, le 28 juin 1629, enlève aux Huguenots tous droits politiques, militaires et territoriaux, ne conservant que la liberté de culte garantie par l’Edit de Nantes, qui sera totalement révoqué le 18 octobre 1685 par l’édit de Fontainebleau.

Le siège de la Rochelle

Wikipédia propose une supposition (sans source) intéressante : sans le siège, la ville serait aujourd’hui une des plus importante de France. Au-delà de constater comment l’histoire à déterminer les grandes villes d’aujourd’hui (Rouen était la seconde ville de France jusqu’au 17^ème siècle par exemple), on ne peut que se demander combien de génies, d’invention, d’idées la France a perdu avec sa politique d’intolérance, qui vit les Huguenots s’enfuirent en Angleterre, dans les provinces germaniques ou au-delà. Après ce bref rappel historique, et quelques pas dans les vieilles rues pittoresques aux belles arcades, ainsi que le long des remparts, dominés par la belle tour de la Lanterne, en passant par le vaste parc Charruyer. Le port a demandé sa classification aux patrimoines de l’humanité, il est, il est vrai, assez remarquable. Le grand port industriel de la Pallice contient lui une base de sous-marin allemande de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, où furent tournés le premier Indiana Jones et Das Boot mais, faute de savoir qu’il existe, nous ne le verrons pas hélas. Puis nous quittons « la belle et rebelle » ville de la Rochelle, en passant devant son université, qui donne sur la mer pour rouler vers une des capitales historiques de la Bretagne, Nantes.

Là-bas nous irons rapidement voir la cour du château des ducs de Bretagne, avant de nous régaler dans restaurant à l’intérieur chic, le Pont-Levis, et aux plats aussi délicieux que menu. De par l’heure tardive, nous étions les seuls à l’exception d’une fille et de ses parents, assez âgés. Le père, d’un âge vénérable, racontant qu’arrivé à Aix comme soldat lors de la libération, à la nuit tombante, un sénégalais lui conseilla de ne pas sortir, à cause des « sauvages », désignant ainsi les personnes à la peau noire vivant à Aix. L’homme lui demande alors pourquoi il les appelait ainsi, car il l’était lui-même l’un d’entre eux. Et le sénégalais lui répondit : moi je suis un guerrier. Qui croyez vous qu’on vous a vendu comme esclaves ? Les meilleurs ? Au-delà de l’anecdote raciste et anachronique, il ne faut pas oublier que les peuples d’Afrique ont aussi participé à la traite des esclaves, sujet qui n’est pas assez abordé : pourquoi ? Pressions des futurs colonisateurs ? Appât du gain ? Avaient eux aussi des justifications bidons comme « ceux là n’ont pas d’âme » ? Bon il faudrait lire dessus mais je n’ai pas le temps. Il ajoute une autre information : les pirates barbaresques de Méditerranées auraient capturé et traité plus d’esclaves que les européens, mais avec moins de conséquences car ces esclaves là n’étaient pas autorisé à avoir de descendance. Là encore, au-delà d’une sorte de pseudo – justification (les méfaits de l’un n’efface pas ceux de l’autre) il faut voir un sujet peu abordé qui mérite aussi des lectures : la traite des esclaves au-delà du commerce triangulaire européen. Mais là encore, je manque de temps, donc on se contentera de se rappeler deux choses fondamentales : l’esclavage est un phénomène mondial à différents stades de l’histoire, et qu’il est un fléau qui ne doit jamais redevenir d’actualité. Après ce repas, nous nous dirigeons vers la cathédrale, d’une blancheur immaculée, puis vers Le Lieu Unique, ancienne biscuiterie LU (Lefebvre – Utile) devenu lieu culturel, dont l’ambiance techno-destroy me rappelle furieusement le palais de Tokyo, aile nationale. Enfin il est temps de partir, car nous devons atteindre notre but sacré : le Mont Saint-Michel.

Lorsque nous y arrivons, il nous apparaît déjà au loin dans la baie, rocher solitaire au milieu d’une étendue plane sous un ciel nuageux, le soleil se couchant au loin. La route serpente, s’amuse à jouer la montre avant de nous le livrer : nous arrivons, après les auberges à touriste à ses pieds : majestueux, grandioses ! Voilà une des raisons de notre voyage. Mais il est déjà trop tard pour visiter l’intérieur de l’abbaye, il nous faudra revenir. Nous déambulons dans les rues, où tout semble « de la mère Poulard » : restaurant, où s’affaire des batteurs d’œufs propre à émerveiller les touristes japonais, une boutique de la mère Poulard, où trône des prospectus en japonais, des ruelles entre, avec leur défibrillateur tous les cinq mètres, ainsi que l’auberge, l’hôtel, les toilettes de la mère Poulard, bon j’exagère. On pourrait croire que l’esprit du lieu en est pervertit, mais l’humain a fait preuve d’ingéniosité commerciale depuis bien longtemps : que croyez vous qu’il y avait au Moyen-Âge ici ? Des échoppes pardi ! Bon les touristes ont remplacé les pèlerins mais cela reste le même principe. Sur les remparts nous croisons une japonaise isolée, c’est un bonjour qui nous vaut un franc sourire alors que le soleil s’en va mourir et les étoiles apparaissent dans le ciel noir à la frontière entre Bretagne et Normandie. Du haut des murs, les ombres des fenêtres saillantes forment un curieux tableau sur les toits mais pas le temps de l’observer plus avant : il est déjà tard. Nous quittons sous ces belles étoiles le mont, à reculons. Destination : Avranches, son rond-point doté d’un char Sherman en son milieu et son hôtel « le Patton » pour nous y reposer après une pizza locale, juste à côté d’un autre plus classieux, ancien relais de poste.

La Bretagne, avec l’Alsace, resteront les grandes absentes de ce voyage, avec peut être aussi Paris et la Loire mais comme dit sagement Lionel, il faut bien avoir une raison de revenir. Rendez-vous pris avec l’abbaye, la base de la Pallice et le passage Pommeraye à Nantes !

Nous partons, Lionel et moi sur la route pour notre périple : un tour de France. Étrange de remarquer que nous connaissons parfois plus les contrées lointaines que notre pays de naissance, très grand il est vrai. Alors nous avons décidé de “faire un tour” pour le découvrir, d’où moins l’effleurer comme une vierge effarouchée, car embrasser la France dans sa totalité, avec ses grandes forêts, ses montagnes et vallées, et ses constructions humaines multiples et diverses, est l’affaire de toute une vie – au minimum. Ainsi nous nous contenterons d’un bref voyage pour visiter pour la première fois un peu toute la France, à l’exception de la Bretagne, abandonnée hélas par manque de temps, ainsi que l’Alsace et la région PACA. Mais nous ne voulons pas privilégier la quantité à la qualité, et dans chaque région nous avons décider de ne pas faire plus de trois visites, pour laisser à chacune le temps d’exister, dans notre voyage puis dans nos mémoires.

Nous partons donc en direction de Bordeaux, avec un arrêt à la Réole. Vieux bourg autrefois important, où le parlement de Bordeaux se réfugia au Moyen-Age, et où trônent un château en ruine ainsi qu’un prieuré aux dimensions imposantes, demeure à présent de la mairie. L’idée de visiter ce village m’est venu car nous le traversons en TGV (littéralement, puisque la voie de chemin de fer passe en partie dans un tunnel creusé dessous) sur la ligne Toulouse-Bordeaux avec une belle vue sur l’ensemble architecturale du prieuré et du château.  Après un rapide repas au seul restaurant chinois du patelin à défaut de restaurant proposant les plats locaux (l’alternative était une pizzeria) nous descendons vers l’église où à lieu un enterrement : par respect nous n’entrons pas et continuons vers le château qui s’avère une demeure privée ! Il en reste un décor au relent de chevaliers et de damoiselles perdu sous la végétation.

Après avoir repris la route, nous atteignons Bordeaux (dont le Port de la Lune est classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO) en fin d’après midi : après avoir laisser notre fidèle monture au parking de la Bourse, nous arpentons les rues étroites de Bordeaux, mélange d’architecture héritée de Haussmann et médiévale.  La place de la bourse, avec ses statues vêtues d’écharpe d’un rouge bordeaux, la place des Quinconces, la Grosse Cloche (ancienne porte de la ville) et la Porte Cailhau. La rue piétonne Sainte-Catherine, longue de 1300 mètres, proposent aux bordelais(es) les joies du shopping en tour genre, et plus loin, le café français en face de la cathédrale nous délecte d’un chocolat chaud. En partant, on passe devant l’énorme librairie Mollat, s’étendant sur de nombreuses vitrines. C’est effectivement la plus grande librairie indépendante française. Il est étrange de constater que, après quelques heures à peine à flâner dans ses ruelles, que la ville me plaît. Peut être parce que j’en garde quelques souvenirs de mon enfance, où lorsque ma famille habité Pessac puis Cestas, nous venions les samedi y faire un tour, occasion parfois pour moi de recevoir en cadeaux la maquette d’un avion à la boutique de modélisme de la Galerie Bordelaise.  Joie ! Dix ans plus tard, elle est toujours là, témoignage vivant de mon enfance en Aquitaine.

Mais à présent il nous faut rouler vers notre lit, à la Rochelle. La nuit est tombée sur Bordeaux et lorsque nous avérons là-bas, seul un Mac-Do nous tant ses bras pour nous accueillir si tard. A la question “y-a-t-il une réduction avec la carte étudiante ?”, la vendeuse me répondra qu’ils ne font plus les “cartes pirates”, comme quoi, chaque région à ses petites spécificités. Le ventre d’une nourriture peu caractéristique, nous nous acheminons vers l’auberge de jeunesse, en jetant un premier coup d’oeil au port fortifié éclairé : c’est magnifique. Vivement demain, pour découvrir une nouvelle vision de celui-ci en plein jour !

Conseil aux voyageurs n°1 : dans une auberge de jeunesse, mieux vaut arriver tôt, si on ne veut pas finir par se mettre au lit dans le noir, par respect vis à vis des autres occupants du dortoir.

Etape n°1 : Toulouse – La Réole – Bordeaux – La Rochelle (Km : 449 Temps voiture : 4h41 Plan)

It smells like rain (or rather a little like wet wool), it sounds like rain and it is marvelously gloomy and glum outside – which strangely makes me all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Autumn in finally setting in here, we have had to start cracking out the gloves, scarves and beanies. Ah, je suis contente.

Finally all I have left to do for my visa is hand everything in and hope that is ok, I have only been here nearly 2 months and it still hasn’t been done. (Had to wait for appointments etc.) That final appointment is on Thursday, and then a few hours later I hop on a train to Paris! I can’t believe that it is so close or that I am actually going! It’s one of those places that you always talk about longing to visit and intend to, but now that I actually am, it still feels a little surreal. Me in Paris! I am not sure what internet access I will have there, so you may just get a giant Paris update at the end of the trip :p

Been a bit more active the past few days, (maybe because of the cold??) had yummy italian pizza again for EJ’s birthday and then we went to the pub quiz again on Thursday night, we beat the other Aussie team but the Euro team beat us by one point! Quelle dommage. It shall not happen again :p The next night we went out to ‘Australian’ night at one of the bars, but we are not 100% what was so Australian about it. They played some Aussie songs and handed out hats – but since when do we wear fluro cowboy hats and straw safari hats? I think the French may be confused and think that Australia is somewhere down in Africa. Either way I now have a cool new decoration in my room. Got myself to the conservatorium here in the hopes of finding a singing teacher, and am just waiting for them to get back to me. The admin lady took me off the one of their teacher’s room to talk to them, and ended up singing for them (after 2 months off, ich!) as they just happened to have 2 copies of Don Giovanni on hand (and quite a talented pianist too). Hopefully she can fit me in and I can get stuck into it again (it also means something else exciting for those in the know ).

We made a Swedish friend at the pub quiz, which is great because his English is not as good as his french, so if we want to remain friends we are going to have to be using our french! Most of the other French people we see regularly speak pretty decent English, so it is much easier(and lazier) to not use French to communicate.

Lazy week at uni, we don’t have tutorials because it’s like their mid semester exam week and we don’t have to do them, and one of our two lectures was canceled. Just been French lessons so far.

I am really loving being in Europe, I feel so much more at home here then in Australia. You can’t help but walk around the Vieux Port and be surrounded by history. Also no one looks me funny when I don the red (or green or purple or striped) stockings. I know it would probably be different without so many other English speaking people with me, but as of right now it feels like home. Except that I would really love a steak and some chinese takeaway.

I think it is official that one has officially settled in when one can not think of anything that has happened to write about! It also means nothing dreadful has happened which must be written.

My plans for Paris are pretty much in shape, accommodation is booked, along with tickets to the opera and EuroDisney – I am not sure if the two could be further from each other :p

I received a new friend from Australia today, Blinky the Kangaroo!

He arrived with my birthday present from Lisa and he so is soft and cute :3 Here’s hoping he and Maleficent get along! (Maleficent is the purple dragon you may have seen in some of my pictures)

Uni is still going ok, since we get different assignments that aren’t so much reliant on class work our lecture and tutes pretty much turn into lets see how much French you can comprehend in two hours so if we miss something that is possibly quite important it is not too much of a problem.

So yeah, still alive, just being very boring at the moment

La Rochelle est une petite ville autonome du département de la Charente-Maritime dans la région Poitou-Charentes. Elle est située en bordure de l’océan Atlantique et elle a 1000 ans d’histoire. En septembre, je l’ai visité avec mes amies. C’est une belle ville ancienne et on y est restées quatre jours. On a mangé beaucoup de fruit de mer ; on a visité, on s’est promenées. Et il y avait deux journées du patrimoine culturel ( le 19 et 20 septembre 2009 ) quand on est arrivées. La plupart des découvertes étaient donc gratuites et je pense que c’était très intéressant. En effet, cela attire vraiment beaucoup de touristes. Dans cette ville, il y a quelques lieux touristiques très connus. Par exemple, la tour Saint Nicolas qui a été construite en 1376. Elle est importante pour se doter d’une protection convenable. Et elle se compose d’un cylindre flanqué de quatre tourelles engagées et d’un puissant éperon tourné vers la mer. Il y a une salle, une chambre, une chapelle et trois niveaux. Du XVI° au XVIII° siècle, la tour est épisodiquement une prison.

En face, il y a une autre tour qui a été construite de 1382 à 1390, elle s’appelle La Tour de la chaîne. Elle mesure 34 mètres. Elle était contrôlée par une chaîne qui permettait de fermer l’entrée. Et grâce au prospectus de présentation, on apprend que depuis 2008, la tour comporte une exposition sur les migrants vers le Canada. Les deux tours sont très connues et très importantes pour La Rochelle. Elles constituent l’architecture symbolique de La Rochelle. De l’autre côté, il y a un petit port, les Minimes, son rôle est l’accueil de nombreux bateaux de plaisance. Alors que la plupart des bateaux s’arrêtent ici, ce paysage est vraiment magnifique.

Et le dernier jour, on a visité l’aquarium de La Rochelle. C’est un grand espace qui présente plusieurs types de vie marine pour les touristes ; par exemple, il y a le requin, la tortue marine, les différents types de poissons, la méduse etc. Nous nous sentions comme dans les océans du monde. Pour toutes ces raisons, je pense que La Rochelle est une très belle ville qui possède beaucoup de patrimoine culturel précieux.

I love it. Really

As soon as one thing in my room breaks or stops working then gets fixed, something else goes! I was without a light for a few days, and now that the bulb has been changed, my Internet dies (though for once, it is not just my room, all of the residences have lost theirs). That’s right people, I am blogging to you live from McDo’s (McDonalds for all you qui ne sont pas Français)

As you can tell, I still can’t live like a normal person yet and the elusive shower-head-holder-fixer reamains unseen. I am never going to under appreciate that tiny piece of plastic again!

The last few days haven’t been that interesting at all, filled with mundane sounding tasks such as signing contracts, purchasing insurance and going grocery shopping. On the contrary though, it is actually quite exciting. They can no longer kick me out of my room, if there is a flood (on the second floor) my room and contents are covered and after a week of failing to get, I finally made it to the supermarket and for the first time was able to do a normal week of grocery shopping – I didn’t have to buy sheets, doona, cutlery, stationary or an iron. Just food! Mum should be proud too, only buying food meant that for the first time I was within my grocery budget!

Other exciting things of the week include buying pretty carnations from the markets to go in my water jug vase (so provincial of me). It is crazy how much of a change they make in room, having something living besides me and Jean-Jacque-Pierre in it (Jean-Jacque-Pierre is my resident daddy long legs spider). They are so bright and cheerful and are taking their sweet time to wilt. I can see flowers of some form becoming a permanent fixture.

I went to the option for my French language classes for the first time last week, French literarture, after hearing stories from the history of art class where they just sit back and look at pictures whilst half heartedly making up stuff about them. Predicting a similar affair in my own, it was no surprise that I spent the first hour of the class listening to the makeup of Greek tradgedy and expected to pass the second in the same fashion. Boy, was I wrong. Whilst it will be something I am sure I will enjoy doing, I actually have to perform French theatre! Last week they were presenting fables in French and this week I believe I have to read something from Antigone. One of our main assignments is actually performing a scene from a French play! Sort of excited and sort of scared. She also had us doing tongue twisters and breathing exercises. It should be a fun class ☺

Wow.

I can’t believe that I have been living in France for a month. Whilst part of me feels like I have been here forever, the other side cannot believe how quickly it has passed. London seems so long ago and the time I have left here incredibly short when it is the opposite! You would think that moving half way across the world would require some time to adapt but it feels so normal.

Getting a bit more than annoyed with the administration here. When I moved in my french ‘mentor’ person picked up my keys for me, when everyone else got theirs as I was arriving that afternoon. I have gone and spoken to the person in my office about 3 times since then, and asked about signing my contract but she never said that I had too etc. Move to this week, I received a piece of mail telling me that I had to sign my contract as soon as possible or they would start ‘the expulsion process’. Excited that someone in France finally seemed to be doing their office work I expected to just have to sign something and be able to pay my deposit etc.

I left the main reception 45 minutes later.

Apparently it was incomprehensible to the receptionists there that I had managed to have been living here for a month and had paid my rent without signing anything or paying my deposit. When I first gave the letter I had, they kept asking me ‘you haven’t signed it yet?’. If I had signed it do you think that I would have received that in the mail! Then they couldn’t find the right list with my name on it, and I had to go and see someone else simply so that they could write my name on my folder and then come back to start filling things out. One of the other girls in a different building had been told she needed to get insurance for her building and at the time I had asked my french mentor person if I needed to do the same, only to be told no. Apparently I do in fact need to have it, and have been living uncovered in my room for the last month. I’m also apparently paying for parking as part of my rent despite the fact I don’t have a car. There was a whole little list of things they needed to have off me that no one had told me about even when I have asked. It should hopefully all be sorted out my Monday, but I would have loved for this have been clear from the beginning. And then in the fuss of trying to get this organised I completely forgot to remind them that I have been waiting a month to have things fixed in my room, and now after my main light is blown it is getting increasingly ridiculous to be living here. Le sigh.

On the other hand, I will officially be spending my birthday in Paris! Along with October sneaking up on me, so is this. I can’t believe I am going to be halfway to 44! I have train tickets booked and my accommodation (finally) booked and the plans for things to do are being created. I will be there for 11 nights so am thinking that I will have plenty of time to see everything I would like and fingers crossed that I won’t get struck down by the Paris version of the London plague again!

Still plodding away.

Finally have my final uni timetable to the organisational freak in me is excited to be able to plan things now. If only I could get definite dates for the end of the semester! We have the dates class is meant to end, but apparently if we haven’t covered enough work, they will just continue. I hope they don’t. Assuming I am not having any exams I may have another fortnight to squeeze some travel in before our french language exams. Handy no? On french levels, they finally fixed mine up, so I no longer sit in class wanting to poke up eyes with out a fork, studying things I did a year and a half ago, hooray!

Got my feet wet in the Atlantic Ocean on Friday night, which was amusing. It was around midnight, so I couldn’t actually see what the beach was made of but I am going with really pointy shells as opposed to sand.

We went to the fresh food markets the next morning which was exciting (so many yummy strawberries) and slightly overwhelming too. Going back this week to actually try and buy some things now that I have an idea what is there. They really seemed to have everything, you could even buy live lobsters. Ich. (Maybe I should go an liberate them?)

On Saturday night, to celebrate the end of the Grand Pavois (massive boat festival, what a surprise) they had a boat show (I think) and a fire works display. Got no idea about anything to do with the boat show part as I went and had dinner, but the fireworks were pretty cool. We think that they were being narrated to with bits of french history, but it was a bit too hard to hear and understand to know. We could hear the music they were accompanied by though and they actually managed to match it quite well. Interesting choice in music, went from the Black Eyed Peas, to Suo Gan, back to Daft Punk then to Moon River. Sounds just like my iTunes collection (except for the MIchael Jackson finale, thats not my iTunes).

Whilst having my tickets booked to get to Paris, I am having beaucoup de fun trying to find somewhere to stay that is a) not to expensive and b) is actually a ‘France’ looking hotel. At the moment things are either booked or can give me a room for like 3 nights. I know something will turn up but oh it is taking forever at the moment!

I really need to go find dinner!

Depuis neuf ans, le Français Jean-Marie Jegoux construit des yachts de luxe. Son idée a fait école en Turquie, à Antalya, autrefois creuset du textile.

Invité d’honneur

La Turquie est le pays invité du Grand Pavois, qui ouvre ses portes aujourd’hui et les refermera lundi prochain. Ses 8 333 kilomètres de côtes séduisent, chaque année, des milliers de visiteurs, ses chantiers navals sont parmi les plus réputés au monde. Entourée des mers Noire, de Marmara et Égée, la Turquie est aussi une destination renommée pour ses Croisières bleues, des embarquements avec équipages sur des « gulet », bateaux en bois de construction traditionnelle.

Où est donc passé l’accent de son Béarn natal ? Tel le galet dans le lit du gave, son roulement de R s’est poli à l’étranger. Jean-Marie Jegoux y vit depuis plusieurs décennies. Il a connu l’Irak, a travaillé à Abou Dhabi, mais c’est en Turquie que ce très actif sexagénaire fait aujourd’hui flotter au vent le pavillon de ses ambitions. Jean-Marie Jegoux, l’Orthézien, y incarne le développement fulgurant de l’industrie nautique dans le pays ces dix dernières années.

Comme souvent, tout commence par une rencontre. 1987, Istanbul. Jean-Marie participe au chantier d’installation du réseau de gaz de la ville. Un chantier de sept années mené tambour battant, pour installer un maillage équivalent à celui de Paris. C’est alors qu’il rencontre un fabricant turc de planches à voile et de petites unités jusqu’à 12 mètres, par l’intermédiaire du père de celui-ci, correspondant local dans l’entreprise qui emploie Jean-Marie Jegoux.

Ce premier contact ne sera pas décisif. Mais, en 1997, le Français acceptera finalement l’offre de partenariat que lui fera Orhan Celikkol. Au premier la gestion, au second le suivi technique.

Le chantier monte en puissance. Il franchit une très haute mar- che avec trois commandes de motoryachts de 29, 30 et 35 mètres.

« Nous étions alors à Tuzla (NDLR, près d’Istanbul) et avons décidé de changer d’implantation. Nous n’avions ni la place, ni l’outil pour nous développer », commente Jean-Marie Jegoux. Entre une demi-douzaine d’options, c’est au sud-ouest de la Turquie, à Antalya, qu’il installe son atelier de stratification. Il s’y trouve une zone franche qui accueille 30 entreprises du textile. Ned Ship sera la première activité nautique.

« Durant cinq ans, nous sommes restés les seuls de la filière. Aujourd’hui, le rapport s’est entièrement inversé : 40 sociétés nautiques, dont plus de la moitié ont été créées par nos anciens salariés ! »

Des bateaux sur mesure

L’année dernière, sur 2,2 ha, Ned Ship a produit trois bateaux de 33, 34 et 35 mètres; trois autres de 41, 42, 43 mètres cette année. Les clients sont allemands, autrichiens, suisses, de Dubai. Et la concurrence italienne se frotte à des coûts de production de 30 à 40 % inférieurs. « Nous construisons des jouets, détaille Jean-Marie Jegoux. Le client est pleinement associé à la construction de son yacht. Il vient régulièrement et, pour nous, c’est une pression permanente. Dans un chantier italien, le client fait son chèque, il est servi vingt-quatre mois plus tard. Nous, c’est trente-six mois, certes. Mais le client est venu vingt fois demander une modification et il a suivi tout le chantier. Nous faisons du surmesure. »

Jean-Marie Jegoux en convient, « organisation et coût de la main-d’oeuvre » permettent ce tour de force. « La législation sur l’emploi est très souple et le personnel est très mobile. À Tuzla, nous étions 200. Je ne voulais conserver que 50 personnes pour débuter à Antalya. Ils sont restés des mois et des mois devant l’usine, à boire du thé. Ils attendaient que je rembauche. Je les ai quasiment tous repris.»

Ned Ship compte aujourd’hui 360 personnes. Et la souplesse de ses organisations ne l’abrite pas de la crise qui traverse la filière depuis un an. « Fin 2008, notre carnet de commandes m’avait permis de faire un plan pour sept ans, à 35 millions de chiffre d’affaires annuel. Aujourd’hui, je serai content si j’atteins les 18 millions. Les commandes de bateaux sont signées, mais les clients ralentissent leurs plans de financement. Au printemps dernier, nous avons même vu disparaître deux d’entre eux. »

Que sont-ils devenus ? C’est comme l’accent béarnais de Jean-Marie Jegoux, nul ne peut le dire.

Le Turc Egemar partenaire du Rochelais Rhéa

Les plus grandes coques de la gamme Rhéa sont moulées sur un chantier proche d’Istanbul

Il y a moins loin de Tuzla à La Rochelle que de la coupe aux lèvres. Cette proximité, la filière nautique la doit à deux hommes. Karman Ege, le PDG d’Egemar Yachts, côté turc. Et Bertrand Danglade, son homologue rochelais de Rhéa Marine. Un distributeur italien les a mis en relation.

Karman cherchait à diversifier son activité. Bertrand à élargir sa gamme. Et c’est ainsi que le patron de Rhéa Marine a signé pour quatre modèles de bateaux de voyage, de 13 à 20 mètres. Un saut dans l’inconnu pour ce chantier dont le plus grand bateau produit à ce jour ne dépasse pas 9 mètres de longueur.

« Bertrand Danglade a opté pour notre chantier après en avoir repéré une vingtaine, évoque Karman Ege, patron d’une entreprise créée en 1982. Notre méthode de travail est similaire à la sienne. »

Un premier moule de coque

Sa collaboration avec Egemar lui fait poser pied sur un premier modèle de 13 mètres, avec montée en puissance à 14, 17 et 20 mètres. Des lignes Rhéa, ces trawlers hériteront des étraves rappelant celles des chalutiers, des coques bicolores et une élégance bien posée sur l’eau.

Au printemps dernier, Egemar réalisait le premier moule de coque. « Pour combien de bateaux avons-nous signé ? Il faut le lire dans une boule de cristal, élude Karman Ege. Ce que je peux vous dire, c’est que, pour nous, l’intérêt, c’est de travailler sur une série. La taille de notre chantier ne nous permet pas de réaliser plus de 25 bateaux par an, en comptant nos productions propres. »

La commande du Rochelais est arrivée chez Egemar alors que le chantier turc essuyait lui aussi la crise. Une baisse d’activité qui l’a contraint à réduire ses effectifs d’une centaine à 30 salariés. Si les délais sont tenus, ce trawler 43 devrait être visible dès le mois de décembre, au prochain Nautic, à Paris.

Un telefilm tcheque a remporte le prix du meilleur  film europeen lors de la 11eme edition du Festival de la Fiction TV de La Rochelle:

“Tatínkova holčička” (Ma  fille  chérie), realise par Petr Slavik et produit  par  Tereza  Kopacova [voir le palmares complet]

Un film dur, celui d’une jeune fille de 15 ans abusee sexuellement par son beau-pere, et les reactions de ses proches, des autorites, de la societe. Ce film fait partie d’une serie de 12 histoires du cycle “Soukromé pasti“ (Pièges privés) traitant de sujets de societe sensibles touchant en particuler les femmes (une etudiante devenant prostituee de luxe pour faire face a ses problemes d’argent; une femme quittee par son mari apres plusieurs annees de mariage; une femme enceinte qui ne veut pas de son enfant; un garcon qui hait sa belle-mere; etc). Diffuse en premiere partie de soiree, scenarios tres realistes et credibles, acteurs tres connus – la serie tres regardee n’a pas laisse indifferent et en particulier cet episode longuement commente au bureau le jour d’apres. Une recompense bien meritee, et des pistes de reflexion pour la societe – un debut de changement des attitudes? Comme le dit le sous-titre du film: Nebojte se říci o pomoc! (N’ayez pas peur d’appeler a l’aide!) – Dětské krizové centrum: 241 484 149 / 800 155 155

La semaine dernière, le festival de la fiction Tv de la Rochelle a décerné pour la première fois un prix de “la meilleure fiction web”. Et la série gagnante est… “L’histoire racontée par des chaussettes”.

La fiction, réalisée par deux membres du Jamel Comedy Club, était au départ destinée au chaînes de télévision… mais toutes ont dit non… Le web est ici utilisé comme moyen de montrer à de potentiels diffuseurs qu’ils sont passés à côté d’une bonne idée, qu’un public existe et qu’ils pourraient avoir intérêt à investir un petit peu… un peu comme certains réalisateurs qui font un court métrage avant de passer au long…

Pour autant, la série est parfaitement adapté au plateforme type Youtube ou Dailymotion, format court, aspect faussement amateur… Un air de “chanson du dimanche”… Souhaitons lui le même succès !

After spending the first three weeks in France with an unhappy cold it is gone! To celebrate this fact, we finally managed to get to Bordeaux on Friday to do some retail therapy. Our dedication to this art is immediately obvious when we caught the train from La Rochelle at 6:06am. Actually, only 3 out of the 5 of us who had planned to come made it to the station, the other two were still safely tucked up in bed. As we planned we saw as little of Bordeaux as possible, except for inside of stores. We pretty much hopped off the train and had breakfast (Pain au chocolat yum!) and trammed it to one of their shopping centres. After there we strolled down (more like a wild hunt for a handbag and shoes) what we believe is one of the main shopping streets. Excepting a jacket that I don’t believe even exists, I think we managed to find everything we were looking for and then some. Like the 1st year engineering students who sold is lollies for 10 cents dressed up in lab coats with writing all over their faces. Interesting. Bordeaux does look like a really pretty city and felt a lot more French than La Rochelle which was nice. Hopefully we will get back there at some point with out such a desperate need for pretty new things so we can actually appreciate the city. After getting to the station on time to catch the train home, we eventually ended up sitting in the compartment for an hour and a half waiting for the train to move. Apparently there was no engine which is a little worrying because it is not exactly a small thing to lose! Thankfully they found one and we (and all our shopping bags) made it home safely.

This weekend in La Rochelle they are having what is called Journée du patriomoine, which we believe is when they open all the museums and historical places up for free to just generally attract people to what is on, get them interested and maybe donate?? Anyway what ever it was for we went into town to have a look. We started at the Museum of Beautiful Art (Musée de Beux-Arts) which was a small gallery on the top floor of an old house. They had another exhibition on the bottom floor across several rooms called ‘Goldrush’ as well which was a bit of a joke. Though it did lead us out to the houses garden/backyard where we found a very amusing gargoyle

The paintings upstairs were quite nice, it wasn’t a very big collection, but because of it’s size you could see everything and enjoy it without wanting to rush or getting bored. The house it was in is fabulous and I wanted to live there till we got to the next museum, the Musée du Noveau Monde, which was a similar style but even more cool. Though, the first one did have a better entrance… Hmm. Honestly didn’t pay that much attention to what this museum was displaying I was more interested in the architecture and windows and doors. I took so many photos I think the man who worked there thought I was getting ready to burgle the place. I am also really intrigued by how the French build staircases…

After there we went to the Musée de Flaçon au Parfum or something, which was a perfume bottle museum above a perfume shop. Both were old, and outdated.. :p It would have been more interesting if they have provided more information about the bottles, as as it stands it is just cabinets full of bottles of perfume, from mini mini ones to giant huge ones. It was pretty to look at, it should probably just be advertised as a perfume bottle display, not museum.

After deciding to come home to have an early after a busy few days, I actually ended up going out to the Irish guys house/room who we have met, to what I believe was meant to be pre-drinks before they went out on the town, but I don’t think many made it that far. Whilst still lacking a little in the meeting french people department, I can cross German, Brazillian, Czech, Italian, Irish and New Zealand off my list!
