You are at the workplace housekeeping a house or fixing its plumbing and when you come home at night you realize an open lead you wanted was taken already. Has this happened to you? Would you like to receive text-message alerts in your cellphone whenever new leads arrive to your Laborfair account and be able to act fast on them? Or you are getting too many Open Leads in your alerts and would like to filter them to receive only those personal leads from prospect customers who chose you at Laborfair.com? Now you can do all this!

We are announcing new, flexible alert settings in your Laborfair account that will let you do all this. Go to your account at Laborfair.net and click on Alerts within the Account tab to setup your alerts. The new settings give you 2 options:

1. Mobile alerts for personal leads, and

2. Mobile alerts for open leads.

Once you have selected either one or both and have clicked the [UPDATE] button, Laborfair will present a page where you need to type a mobile code that we send to your phone. The code looks like: se34ngs. Enter the code on the webpage, click OK and you will be all set to receive your Laborfair lead alerts.

The system is proven to work with ATT, Cingular, Verizon and Spring cellphones. Regretfully MetroPCS phones are currently not supported by Laborfair Alerts. We are interested in expanding the mobile features to all of you and will be coming up with more possibilities to include MetroPCS in the near term.

Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions by adding a comment below.

Dear Laborfair providers,

We would like to announce a new Laborfair.com feature we call ContactNow. ContactNow will make it faster for customers visiting your profile to connect immediately with you through your phone or email. If your prospect customer is facing an emergency or needs to coordinate agendas quickly to take care of an immediate need, she or he can pay a fee to view your contact information and proceed to contact you right away. Check it out in your contact form at Laborfair.com

Laborfair.com remains FREE for customers posting personal leads in your Laborfair profiles. However, your profile now offers this extra convenience in case your customers have no time to wait for your responses to their postings of personal leads.

The ContactNow feature is enabled by default in your Laborfair profile. That is, it is already active in your profile. If you wish to disable this feature and would like to restrict your leads to only text postings through your contact form, remove the respective checkmark in your account Contact Info page. See more in our Help section.

There is a lot I want to write about the last four days in San Francisco, the Investors Circle confe

There is a lot I want to write about the last four days in San Francisco, the Investors Circle conference was an incredibly rewarding experience…. but I will save my comments on the conference for another day.

My last meeting in San Francisco this morning was with Labor Fair, a cool startup headed by Jenna Raby, and it occurred on Folsom and 5th. I showed up 15 minutes early so I walked around the neighborhood to find the Intercontinental hotel one block north of their offices… and it brought me back to my last day in India a month before…

Virgin messed up my flight and so I was not allowed in the Mumbai airport on return. After a four hour morning drive from Pune, this left me particularly pissed off. It was 42 degrees Celsius and I had all my bags for three months so I decided to splurge on a nice hotel for the night.

If you go to Mumbai, go to the Intercontinental Hotel. Like most five star hotels in India (or anyone in the world for that matter), it is a nice exploration into “fuck you money”. I found myself looking for the vomitorium after dinner there; alas they did not have one…yet. The Intercontinental is right next to Mumbai’s airport which is surrounded by the largest slum in Asia, Dharavi. If you walk out of the hotel, you are literally right in the slum with people bathing in the streets. The juxtaposition of the waterfall within the Intercontinental’s lobby and the water starved slums outside is particularly post modern. For the first time since I was in India, I was ready to go home because at least things were not this messed up in America.

But India is just not as good as the US is at hiding the extremes, after all we have had a two hundred year head start. I walked from my hotel on Taylor and O’Farrell in San Francisco down 6th street into the Mission for my meeting with Jenna. And here I was again, one block from the Intercontinental hotel and the streets were lined with the poor and destitute. This time it was early morning in America, and the police had yet to “clean the streets” of those less fortunate.

This experience brought me back to an earlier trip to Mumbai in January. I was staying in New Marine Lines near Churchgate Station with a friend who works for the US government at the American Center, a nice building that says “Please, just bomb me already.” On my third night there, I returned with five laptops on my back (another story for another day). New Marine Lines is packed with Indian families living on the sidewalks on either side of the street. It was around 10pm and many were cooking dinner over open fires before heading to their nice rest on the bare pavement. The laptops on my back were worth at least 3 lachs ($7,500 currently, but with the help of the FED, maybe lower soon!) Selling those laptops could have easily fed those families for a month if not a year…or bought them clothes, or a water purifier, or inoculations against Mumbai’s variety of diseases. But of course, I did not sell them, because I was going to use them to build a social media platform that was going to help solve inequality, poverty, climate change, and all the other worlds afflictions. Right? I mean a first week University of Chicago freshman econ major could back this argument up against every possible attack.

A month later, I was in London with Kevin in a meeting with someone from a very prominent sustainability consulting company. I relayed this story to them, and of course this Harvard educated graduate looked at me skeptically, that look of “Of course you did not sell them you idiot, that is not the way the world works!” I found it particularly funny that this woman was arguing against selling the laptops, after all, she works for a company that is trying to fundamentally shift the way people think about business value creation (by valuing intangibles).

I think back to that day often. And I think that’s where it begins, no vast system that perpetuates some sinister conspiracy. It begins with small decisions with every day people who rationalize their decisions as helping the greater good, instead of the good six inches in front of their face. “ Don’t hire ex-offenders or veterans because they have issues. Don’t give to the poor, they might spend it on alcohol. And never, never do the irrational.” Fast forward and in San Francisco, London, New York, and Mumbai, it suddenly becomes OK to have slums and homeless shelters next to Intercontinentals. We no longer think about it because we are rational creatures.

3 of those computers are currently in use. One, my mac (no warranty) died after picking up a virus in the Intercontinental hotel in Boston at the Center for Corporate Citizenship conference 12 hours after I landed in Newark from Mumbai. The fifth sits unused in my desk at home. We may use it in a few months when we make new hires.

Howdy!

We want to share with you this article about Jenna, our CEO, and her vision for Laborfair.com Here is an excerpt:

“The concept behind the business is connecting women in need of a worry-free labor force for their house,” Raby said. The site is not female-only, but, Raby said, “As a woman, I can come in and search for a child care provider or a house cleaner or a gardener.”

The site works like a staffing agency, but connects people human-to-human, without the middleman. It allows users to rate providers, like on eBay, and access is free to consumers.

“Craigslist is direct, people to people, but it doesn’t include reputation,” Raby said. “The profile [component] allows you to really build that yourself.”

We have great news for you! Last week, Laborfair released a new lead distribution system to bring you more job opportunities and help Laborfair.com visitors always find the quality and responsive service they are looking for. Read along!

As a Laborfair provider, you are now getting a new type of leads called Open Leads. Open leads are leads posted by customers within the last 24 hours and made available to all active Laborfair providers in the same service category and location. Open leads, however, accept a limited response. Currently, one open lead can be pursued by only 1 provider on a first-come, first-served basis. The first interested provider to pursue the open lead is able to disclose the customer’s contact information and go after the opportunity. The following image illustrates the new system:

With this new lead distribution system, we have also released a new set of features to make it easy for you to manage all your lead and customer information in your laborfair.net account. This new set of features will help you to:

Act quickly on your new leads,

Find and sort efficiently through all your customers, and

Manage all your existing leads.

To learn more about Open Leads and the new lead distribution and management system, visit our wiki page at http://wiki.laborfair.com/OpenLeads This page also contains an emerging FAQ section we are building with your questions.

Does your customer need to find you quickly when her Google.com start page comes on? Do you need to give your customers a quick way to find you on the web? Well, we have good news for you and your customers: Google makes it easy to find you on Laborfair.com! There is a way to find you right in the top of the first page of that Google search result. The trick? Searching for your fairID.

Your customers can find you by adding in the search field:

fairID yourfairID

The following snapshot shows an example of somebody searching for Mike with fairID “mshaw” and a link to his Laborfair.com webpage. His webpage comes up in the top of the search results on Google.com

Dear Laborfair members: fairIDeation has been quiet in the last few days. But gosh, what few days! W

Dear Laborfair members:

fairIDeation has been quiet in the last few days. But gosh, what few days! We are revolutionizing Laborfair to bring you more. And part of this revolution, comes with changes. In an effort to offer you fair and competitive prices for your leads, Laborfair is implementing effective today new lead prices based on the category of your leads. Before, you paid a flat fee of $5 per lead regardless of the category of your services. Now in certain categories such as Child Care, that same lead only costs $3 and in higher-paying job categories like Carpentry, the lead is $10; more than the previous price but still far less than other lead providers for carpenters. Simple and fair!

To implement this new category-tailored pricing, Laborfair is also lowering the price of credits from $5 to $1 per credit. One dollar, one credit. Simple and easier to manage. You get as many credits as dollars you invest.

You may ask: “What happens now with the credits I had before? Did they loose their buying power with this lower credit price?” The answer is: no. Quite the opposite. We have increased your account balance to give you the same buying power, and in some cases, even more than what you had before. For example: If yesterday you had 2 credits in your balance to pay for 2 leads, today you have 20 credits to pay for 2 or more leads depending on the category of the lead. If you are a Child Care provider, you can now accept 6 leads with the money you could accept 2 yesterday. In the case of service providers such as carpenters, they get the exact same buying power as they used to, that is: 20 credits to buy those 2 leads their balance was able to pay before.

As always, we are committed to providing you access to more fair paying jobs and outstanding support. If you have any questions about our offering, please do not hesitate to talk with us using the comment space below.

Thank you!

The Laborfair team had a pretty busy weekend getting the word out about your services at Laborfair.com. We participated with a booth at the ACS Home Show 2008 in San Francisco between the 18th and 20th of January. A constant stream of people passed by our booth and learnt of laborfair.com.

All kind of enthusiastic expressions confirmed there is an unmet need out there. People need your services: “Wow! What a great idea!” “ Housekeepers too?” “…wished I knew of it last week… I needed a bartender for my family reunion… next time!” “Can you help me find somebody to install my washer and dryer?”

We also enjoyed the company and support from one of our members, Kevin (fairID:Kevin) who provided an active help showing the site to the booth visitors and getting our flyers around the show. Thanks Kevin!!!

Starting next Monday January 21st the Laborfair.com marketplace will unpublish temporarily those FREE profiles not responding to their exclusive and direct customer requests. This feature will further improve your customer experience and lead them to generate more service requests for those of you available for them.

We recognize that your availability is pretty dynamic. So, if your availability has changed and you cannot respond to your leads for some time, please follow these simple guidelines to prevent expired leads and keep your good, responsive reputation intact for your customers. As always, we encourage you to be responsive to your customers. They have taken the time to screen through the marketplace and generate an exclusive and direct lead for you in your Laborfair profile. Give back with your professional response by accepting or declining your leads. Your FREE profile will remain always published as long as you accept or decline your leads.

Can I publish my profile back if I could not respond to a lead? Yes, you can come back to your account to republish your FREE profile if it was unpublished by your expired lead. At Laborfair, we believe that both you deserve fair-paying jobs and your customers deserve the responsive, quality service they are looking for. We together can realize these beliefs through a trusted marketplace where you and your customers thrive.

Be responsive! Decline! Accept!

Are you available this week? When consumers go to Laborfair.com to request your help, they are assum

Are you available this week? When consumers go to Laborfair.com to request your help, they are assuming you are available during the days you define because your profile is published. And although our laborfair.com site could get very smart about how to show whether you are or not available during the week, there are currently 2 simple ways you can communicate your weekly availability:

1. You can remove temporarily your profile from the marketplace. Unpublishing your profile temporarily and publishing it back is fine, free and easy. If you cannot accept leads for some time, just go to your account and unpublish yourself until you are ready to get service requests again. Life as service providers is busy and dynamic. We are all the time on the go and our availability changes because we book our schedule, decide to take deserved time off, get sick or simply are unavailable juggling with our many duties. Simply unpublish your profile and come back when ready to accept more leads.

2. Update your profile description with the details of your current weekly availability. Putting a few words in your profile that describe in detail your availability communicates to your customers you are in top of things, you are an active provider and care of their time. You will leave a professional impression in your customers regardless of whether they drop a lead at this time. Go ahead! Go to your account to drop a few words in your profile description and keep it tuned with your current, weekly availability.

What if you forgot to update your profile and you got a lead you cannot act upon? Simply decline the lead promptly so your customers can come back to post to other available, published providers interested in that job.

By following these simple guidelines you will help your customers and your peers at Laborfair enjoy a better experience. Your peers will get that lead you would otherwise decline or ignore, and potentially land a fair-paying job. Your customers will get the responsive, quality help they deserve. Everybody will be happy!

One of the marketing channels people use to promote themselves and their services is email. Email is today one of the most important, daily channels of communication for your customers. They communicate intensively among themselves using email. And this means that any content about yourself and your services they could easily share via email could potentially bring more business to you.

You are also investing time and energy in your Laborfair profile with your content and the reputation history your customers provide with their reviews. It is a wonderful asset to get new customers in your door. But… how do we bring our profiles into our emails?

The simple answer is: Add your profile web address in your email signature.

Every time you send a professional email regarding your services is a great opportunity to link back to your profile and make it easy for your customers to share that information. Simply add your Laborfair profile at the end of the email and you are done. You have increased your chances of getting more job leads.

Some email services like Gmail, YahooMail and others allow you to archive email signatures and place them automatically at the bottom of your outgoing email. Try it out and see how much it works for you. Let us know!

What's coming up on Laborfair.com? New rating system: Responsiveness!

Your customers want responsive providers. They have communicated to us repeatedly that they want service providers who will take care of their requests promptly by accepting the leads or simply declining with a reason, eg. location, availability, etc, so they can continue looking for the best match around Laborfair.com in time. We have transformed this feedback into a high priority and have decided to develop a number of new features around Laborfair.com that will improve both the consumer experience and bring more opportunities to the most responsive and active providers on Laborfair.

One of the innovations we are introducing very soon is a new rating system and a new default sorting for profile placement on Laborfair.com we call Responsiveness. Responsiveness is defined by the percent of leads accepted or declined up to the last 10 leads received. That is:

If you have received 10 leads so far and have accepted or declined 8 leads and let expire 2 of them, then your responsiveness rating will be 80%. Out of 5 possible stars, your profile will have 4.

If you have only received 2 leads so far, and you declined 1 and accepted 1, then your responsiveness rating will be 100%

Your new star rating will be in your control, the better your response, the higher your star rating will be. And you will always be able to improve it with your last 10 leads.

Thus, be responsive now and get your profile ready for a better placement on Laborfair.com!

Wait! But… what will happen to the current review’s star rating? Good question! Reviews are critical for your customers as well. Among the most responsive, customers also look for the well-reviewed profiles. We have also plans to revolutionize the way reviews are generated and displayed. It will be easier for your customers and better for your reputation online and your placement at Laborfair.com! Stay tuned for more news!

Remember! Early birds get the worm. Be responsive now and get ready for the New Responsiveness Rating!

At Laborfair, we don’t offer pay for placement, we’re about equality here. So may the be

At Laborfair, we don’t offer pay for placement, we’re about equality here. So may the best service provider win. The best provider who accepts or declines leads, that is.

Laborfair.com customers want and NEED prompt responses from you for their job requests. Do NOT ignore them. You can ACCEPT (pay $5 or subscribe for unlimited for$25 monthly) or DECLINE but please do not ignore them–it hurts your profile by affecting your rating and hurts our service by making customers feel angry and unloved! Who wants to feel unloved?

We understand paying for a job lead that might not turn into a job is hard. At Laborfair, we LIMIT the number of job requests per area and category that a customer can send to 3. If you get a personal lead, most probably you were the only one selected or at worst, one of 3. That dramatically improves your chances of getting the work. We don’t sell leads many times over. That wouldn’t be FAIR.

When you accept or decline, you must log-in to your Laborfair.net account. Why is this important? It affects your rank. Laborfair.com offers 4 sorting options to those customers searching for help on Laborfair.com. Last Login, Ratings, Rates and Photo. Here’s info on how “Last Login” works:

“Last Login” displays the member who most recently logged in at laborfair.net. If you were the last person to log in at Laborfair.net then you are the first profile to show up in Laborfair.com. That’s it! “Last Login” is also the default sorting for Laborfair.com too. So, Login when you get a lead, accept or decline it and be at the top of the list.

Our “Last Login” criteria serves as an approximation to your level of interest and your responsiveness to customers. This is why “Last Login” is currently used as the default sorting criteria and acts as our pay for placement equivalent, except that you don’t have to pay. Nice, no?So, if you get a job lead in your personal email box, log in to Laborfair by clicking through and accept or decline it immediately. It takes only 10 seconds and keeps your listing up near the top for all to see, improving your placement, and getting you leads.
