Well, here we are, Day Number Four. It’s raining (the unavoidable kind – at least two articles of clothing are going to get wet), and I have no choice but to go outside. So, with my Doctors note in hand, with a list of 5 different tests he wants me to get, I head out on my quest to cure myself.

Half of the tests on the list I don’t even understand. The last one on the list I can’t even read. One of them is just called ‘US’ – ‘US’ could stand for so many things! ‘United States’ (not likely), ‘Useless Scholar’ (what?), ‘Unimaginative Slacker’ (not me!). ‘Unlikely to Survive’ (…)

Here we are in the waiting room. Believe me when I say it took a good while before I was just sitting and actually waiting in this room. The receptionist taking all my information could barely understand my English (who can blame her?) so I was forced to speak my butchered version of French. And that took a while. Something that should have taken 5 minutes, took about 20. I was also a little worried that this was going to cost me a small fortune. When she started writing down the price and I saw the number ‘3′ leading the amount, I hoped for a comma to show up real soon. Next number, ‘1′. (Comma, comma, comma). Her hand blocked the rest and as she handed me the piece of paper, I was absolutely terrified of seeing ‘3100 euros’. Thankfully it was only ‘31 euros’.

So, with the fear of going bankrupt out of the way, I was left to my own devices in the waiting room. There wasn’t much to really look at, nor was there anything to take pictures of – except my feet. It was at this precise moment that I realized I was there for tests. My previous assumption of being ‘poked and prodded’ at was incredibly naive. ‘Marayna, you idiot, testing usually involves blood’. And to get blood? ‘You need needles’. Crap. It’s okay – the nurse didn’t laugh too hard as she stabbed me and stole 5-thousand quarts of my blood.

Now, what kind of lab, that takes your blood, makes you go down a flight of stairs afterwards? I contemplated sliding down the railing, but that may have been the possible malaria influencing my decisions.

Okay – fetus graffiti. Seriously? What kind of message is this sending to people? ‘Fetuses – Surviving on wet pavement since 1867. If only there were a way out.’

Tomato juice and water in a wine glass. Tobasco and celery salt optional. Sorry – I have absolutely nothing clever to say about this photo. I’m not even sure why I took it.

Yes, this looks utterly disgusting. It’s French Onion Soup. But in Paris they just called it ‘Onion Soup’. Despite how grotesque it looks in this photograph, it was delicious and probably the only thing I’m capable of eating – so back off!

Being a huge fan of the ‘thumbs-up’, it says a lot when I choose to sport the ol’ ‘thumbs-down’. Can you blame me? I don’t necessarily enjoy having needles shoved into the crook of my elbow. I’d make the worst heroin addict.

To make myself feel better, this is what I’m having for dinner. A sundae, one café creme, and water in a wine glass. And one sip of red wine.

Tomorrow – Ladurée for macaroons and some cocktails as crazy as Aunt Judy.

DONE my last midterm and DONE my last 6-hour lab!! Now I am FRREEEEeeee…. to study for final exams lol. Such a glamourous life I lead (you know I love it though). My lab section went out to celebrate this evening, yay for beer on a Monday! I love when scientists get together to do social stuff… we’re a special bunch who can’t help thinking DNA jokes are funny.

I took the rest of the evening off from studying and baked banana cookies. YUM they were so good!!

As for the lungs, they held up nicely on this long day. I’m thinking that I will kick the prednisone tomorrow. And hopefully go running!!

Ok. Autodesk just sent out a email, ad hopefully you got it. It appears as though there have been a few changes since I attended 2 years ago. I have revised the last AU post, but am adding this for any that already read it.

No Handouts, No Agendas

“AU will not be providing attendees with printed personal agendas. Be sure to print yours and bring it to the show. Be sure to print your class handouts as well. AU will not be providing printed handouts except those for hands-on labs.
Handouts will be available for printing starting November 17. To print the handouts, go to AU 2009 Class catalog, search for the class, click on the Session ID link, and then under Class Materials near the top of the class details page, click the handout links. Some classes have additional documents or samples, so be sure to print all of them. “

…per the ’News you can use for AU’ email received this afternoon

Sorry folks. It appears as though cost cutting has us by the chucks again. Print Everything out!!!! Handouts, agendas, maps, and anything you can’t live without.

Don’t forget that if you want a solid breakfast, you’ll have to bring that too.

Backpacks

I remember the 2005 guys had these beautiful laptop bags, wheels and all. The shoulder bags we received the following 2 years were progressively less useful. Pretty, tough, nice, but I I can’t get a laptop in it, I really can’t use it. ..and don’t mention those mini-computer things… If it won’t run Civil 3D and Inventor, no thanks.

This year I am really happy to announce that there will be BACKPACKS again. I hope they are as nice as the ones from 2005….or better. (pic was taken from the Autodesk sales site) I don’t mind printing my stuff out so much now.

I am still miffed about Breakfast.

I had my last Bio lab for the semester today and although I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing for most of the lab I still managed to feel a bit sad, in between feeling flustered. I don’t know most of the names of the people in my group for Bio–we never got time to go over introductions–but I still feel sad that we’ll be split up next semester and will be in groups with new people.

I guess these guys sorta grew on me, and we on each other. We shared so many flustered, clueless, funny moments together. It’s these sorts of things that bond people together. I am also gonna really miss the demonstrator cause she used to tell us exactly what to do for every lab and plus she used to mark as really good. She’s going away next year to study Medicine.

Everyone is going there own way away from everybody and I guess I’m probably the only one feeling sad about this.

Soon I’ll be going my own way too. I wonder if anybody will feel sad for me? I’d rather not know.

Yesterday was a day of loads of appointments and last minute scans. I’m not going to lie: I was extremely pissed off, and for many good reasons.

First, all of it was last minute. As in, we got all the calls the day before (Wednesday) at the last minute. It was especially sad for me because someone I’d been friends with in high school passed away, and since I missed the funeral service, I wanted to go to his paddle out at the Huntington Beach Pier at 10:30am. Initially, I was going to go to the Quest office near my house for my labs at 9:00am, make the paddle out at 10:30am, go to my next doctor appointment at 1:00pm and then have the rest of the day to do whatever I wanted. Then the offices called (both the doctor and the Imaging Center) and change my appointment to 10:30am, and set up 2 different times that day for both my CT scan and my PET scan.

Ok so now you’re telling me at the last minute that 1) I have to miss this service (which meant a lot for me to go to not only because he was such a great person, but with all I’m going through I know very well how short life is, and what happened to him feels so unfair) and 2) I now get to fast (as in NO FOOD) until about 3:00-3:30pm the following afternoon (and mind you, it was only around 4:00pm or so when the last calls came). Wow, thank you. I mean, I am trying super hard to be cool with everything I need to go through and I understand how vitally important these scans are. However I am so sick of the interference and inconvenience this has been on my life. It’s absolutely ridiculous to me, and I just wish it would end already.

On the upside, I probably do not have anymore scans for another 2-3 months or so. Which means the only worries of food I will have until then is holding it down and not having to stay away from it. As soon as I have the results of my scans, I’ll post them. Last time, the scan results were that the tumor had shrunk from 16 inches to 6 inches, as well as the cancer that had spread to my liver and lungs was no longer there. I can only imagine how after 3 months of treatment then, I made that much progress, to what it will be at now. Perhaps the tumor is 1-3 inches, or gone altogether!! That would be fabulous!!

On a last minute note, I was scheduled to go back in for chemo on Monday. Well as it turns out, my labs yesterday were bad, and I need a unit of blood today. For the schedule, I was actually going to be in the hospital for Thanksgiving. Now because of my labs, even with this unit of blood, I will most likely not be able to be admitted to the hospital for treatment. Most of the doctors and staff that work this out have the rest of the week off for Thanksgiving, so there’s a chance now that I will be able to spend Thanksgiving at home. I’m super psyched about this, but again it will be based on Monday’s lab results and how the medical team’s schedules work out. Unfortunately this may now put me in for Christmas, but hopefully something can work out for that as well. Exciting news out of an inconvenient day!!

Kim-chi is Koreas’ signature dish. No meal is complete without it.

If you remove the spice component of the dish then you get something closely resembling saurkraut. Both of which are ferrmented products, caused by lactic acid bacteria.

It’s actually the time of year that Kim-chi is made, by the mothers and daughters throughout Korea. More about making Kim-chi and the surrounding culture can be found here.

It all sort of ties in well with the market place days that occur in country towns. Here, people come out and try to hawk off the goods they have. You could get everything from out-of-style clothing to food that is literally grown by the stall owner. Yes, very homely.

I used to eat a lot of kim-chi. Too much makes me itch, makes me break out in hives and generally makes me feel unconfortable. Much too much gives me the shits. No wonder. It’s the body’s way of rejecting something that it doesn’t like.

As a group, configure one machine to perform NAT translation and 1 machine to handle both WINS and DHCP. All other machines will simply receive IP addresses in whatever order DHCP assigns them. Make sure all machines have wireshark or ethereal installed on them. Once youour network is properly configured, start the protocol analyzer on all three machines. Perform a release/renew action on the machine that is not NAT or DHCP to attempt to capture the DHCP packets being sent from the DHCP server. Compare the results of the packet captures from the three different machines and prepare a report that identifies the packets coming into the three separate machines.

The network configuration should work as follows: The only machine that should have a static IP should be the DHCP/WINS server. The NAT server should receive it’s IP address from DHCP using a reservation.

Once the network is properly configured and 1 round of packet captures has been achieved, team members must do a rotation configuring all three server role by themselves.

The first part of today’s lab is to review the assignment from yesterday’s lab assignment. The team leader should take the following steps to prepare their group for the lab.

Ensure that all computers are connected to a switch.

Make sure group members have their IP addresses configured to use static IPs (you’ll be given a network prior to beginning the lab)

Ensure that DHCP is not installed on any machine.

Ensure that DHCP Server service is not running on any machine

Once these steps have been taken each group member will configure DHCP and, if necessary, troubleshoot DHCP so that every machine in the group is assigned an IP address from the server acting as the DHCP server. Inidividual group members will be responsible for implementing DHCP ON THEIR OWN in a pre-determined amount of time. This process should be repeated for every member of the team. Have me confirm that DHCP has been properly configured prior to moving on to the next team member.
