I had another wonderful gift this week: my dear friend Kelly surprised me with a visit! Last Sunday

I had another wonderful gift this week: my dear friend Kelly surprised me with a visit! Last Sunday morning, I picked up the phone to hear that Kentucky accent say, “Can you pick me up at the airport tomorrow?” Umm, you bet I can! What time?

Turns out we haven’t seen each other in over two years (shame on us!), so it was quite the reunion. I was really happy her visit coincided with me feeling pretty good – not to mention that she and I have a long history of dining out together and loving to eat! So, since I’m still trying hard to gain weight before surgery, she was the perfect person to inspire me to eat (and eat, and eat).

Our first stop was The Shed for green chile enchiladas. I was a tad nervous about putting green chile into my system again, but I decided just to go ahead and live on the edge! That first bite was a little shocking (I haven’t had anything remotely spicy in months) but the rest of the meal was so delicious I nearly finished the whole enormous plate! And, thankfully, I didn’t seem to have any trouble with the green chile later either!

We proceeded to eat our way around town over the next few days:

Back Street Bistro - phenomenal Hungarian mushroom soup and (for later) amazingly delicious sour cream nutmeg cookies

The Tree House – breakfast burrito (made with local farmer’s market ingredients) - plus a cinnamon roll to go

Whole Foods – St. Andre cheese, country pate, grapes, olives, crackers, and pasta salad as a “picnic” while watching chick flicks on DVD

India Palace – chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, samosas, rice, and garlic nan

Downtown Subscription – Mexican hot cocoa!

On top of all that, there was Thanksgiving dinner! My mom fixed a super-moist (organic) turkey with stuffing and gravy. We added homemade cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, asparagus, Waldorf salad and – of course – a pumpkin pie. So, as you can tell, I didn’t exactly go hungry while Kelly was here…

St. Francis Cathedral Labyrinth in Santa Fe

We managed to squeeze in some other fun besides eating. We walked the labyrinth at St. Francis Cathedral on Thanksgiving morning. We discovered some sweet Christmas gifts at one of my favorite consignment shops, Recollections. We watched movies, read magazines, and chatted by phone with our Kindred Spirit goddesses (Carol, Michelle, Karen H, and even Clare – in Ireland!). All-in-all, it was a lovely visit, with a good balance of recreation and relaxation. Just what the doctor ordered!

Thank you, Kelly, for the truly wonderful and very healing visit. Sure do love you!

I don’t really enjoy driving on dirt roads. But they’re oh so much fun. That being said, until fairl

I don’t really enjoy driving on dirt roads. But they’re oh so much fun. That being said, until fairly recently, most roads were dirt roads. Driving to Kruger National Park would mean a few hundred kilometres of dirt road. If you decided to take a slight detour, you probably would have had to get out the car, open a gate, drive the car through the gate, get off the car, close the gate and only then drive off. Cars actually were developed to work on dirt roads. And cars actually do work pretty well on this surface. The key is to know how to drive your car on these surfaces. That being said, the vibrations can wreck your car if the vehicle is not in tip-top condition. Anyway, it’s quite an amazing experience driving at close to 100kph and attempting to move the steering wheel and receiving no response at all from the car. I had 25km in each direction of this today. Furthermore, this included a rather steep mountain pass. Talk about fun…

Nieu-Bethesda is magical. Perched at the end of this 25km dirt road that begins around 30km North of Graaff-Reinet on the N9, it’s probably the most beautiful town in South Africa. Earlier on in this trip, I was told the town is like a Gilmore Girls town. It’s actually so much more amazing. The town is vastly inaccessible. The dirt road I took in getting there is the “good” road with a back-entrance being another dirt road that’s 30km from the N9. This seclusion has resulted in the town developing an aura that I honestly can’t properly write about in words. Unlike the clinical office blocks of Midrand which are cleaned on a weekly basis, the beauty of these buildings exists in a symbiotic relationship with the environment. The weather adds to the charm and the vegetation wonderfully accentuates the town. Inside you feel as if someone has removed you from the stress of the world and placed you into a dream. It’s a town best explored on foot. I naturally, and because I saw a few dogs walking around, explored it by car.

Being a guy, there was no ways that I was asking for directions and the first thing I did was search for the brewery. Instead, I found two unmarked labyrinths. These did freak me out just a little…

Around 80 million years before the dinosaurs, the Karoo, and particularly this portion of the Karoo was home to mountains higher than the Himalayas. Dicynodon and Aulacephalodon roamed the forests, dominated by Glassopterii in the valleys below. The towering mountains allowed for a lush eco-system beneath it bathed by meandering rivers. The sediment of these riverbanks provided the ideal climate for fossilisation. Any animal that got stuck or died on these banks invariably ended up as a fossil. The mountains around Nieu-Bethesda are teeming with fossils from this the Permian Age. The town has its own museum, the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, which has an amazing selection of fossils that have been found in this, the Karoo Supergroup. Most fossils were unearthed by the renowned palaeontologist Dr. Robert Broom (who later unearthed the fossils of early humans in the Cradle of Humankind) and James Kitching. Kitching had a knack for identifying fossils and as a result of him finding a Karoo Therapsid in Antarctic; he established the notion of continental drift – something that has vastly helped mankind to understand the planet. The museum also has a step-by-step guide on how to become a fossil – something you should take heed of it you would like beings that in 250 million years time to dig you up and display your bones in whatever display cabinets they use then. The highlight of the tour, though, was an actual demonstration of how a fossil is recovered from rock. Using a pneumatic dentist’s drill, excavating fossil from rock is a painstaking job that could take several years. And yes, these palaeontologists have to sit and use this tiny drill on a rock the size of a football to recover a bone from rock that has the exact same colour as the bone. One slip up and well, the fossil is destroyed…

The town’s centre piece is the world renowned for the Owl House. Although from the name, one would think that this is a sanctuary for these magnificent birds, it actually is an entrancing artwork created by one Miss Helen.

Born in 1898 in the town, Helen Martins returned to Nieu-Bethesda after a messy divorce to take care of her ailing parents. Upon their death, she experienced depression until one day; she embarked on a single-minded mission to bring light into her life once again. Using meagre resources, she and a local sculptor transformed her dreary house into a magical playground with owls, colour and beauty. Outside her house are the cement sculptures depicting owls, people, far away lands and the nativity. The beauty is intense yet eerie. These enchanted figures protected Miss Helen in this universe that she created for herself.

Inside, the house sparkles in a cacophony of colour. Crushed glass has been applied to every wall making the house sparkle. This is amplified by the strategically placed stained glass murals, lamps and mirrors.

I leave the house in awe. Outside, I purchase a little concrete owl made by a ten year old boy to mimic the creations of Miss Helen. Nieu-Bethesda took my mind to a world that you don’t believe exists. It’s exquisite. And I say yet again, it’s a town that has a beauty that I cannot explain. Do yourself a favour and visit this town – it will make you believe once more…

by Mike Oppenheimer

Let Us Reason Ministries

Walking the labyrinth has become a popular spiritual exercise across the country and around the world. I first read of it in Leadership Magazine, a Christian publication and became a bit concerned, since looking into it further I’m definitely concerned.

Labyrinths are said to been used for over 3000-3500 years (depending who you ask), accurate dating has been difficult. We are told by those who promote their use that Labyrinths are ancient and have been a part of the sacred landscape through human history. Those who use the labyrinth describe them as a pattern with power and a purpose. They are called “divine imprints,” that symbolize an archetype of wholeness. The Labyrinth is said to encourage healing, clarity, and peacefulness. There are claims of profound experiences as they affect the people who use them by connecting them with the deepest part of themselves. Labyrinths can often have a particular “specialty” in healing, improving ones health or alleviating symptoms of certain diseases.

Illusion Labs preparing Labyrinth 2 for iPhone When Illusion Labs first released Labyrinth for iPhon

Illusion Labs preparing Labyrinth 2 for iPhone

When Illusion Labs first released Labyrinth for iPhone in October 2008, the novelty of rolling a realistic ball bearing around a wooden maze game was entertainment enough. It was as simple as any physical toy in terms of gameplay, but the realism of its physics and this new form of motion-sensitive control system was quite awe-inspiring.

More than 12 months on, that novelty value has worn off, so the developer has its work cut out in keeping those simplistic game mechanics interesting in the forthcoming sequel, Labyrinth 2.

The official website has just gone live, and details how Labyrinth 2 will allow you to create your own levels using the web-based editor on the main site and share them instantly with other players. Players will also be able to rate user-created levels, creating something of a Labyrinth community with plenty of new levels to keep you playing.

It’ll also pack in four player multiplayer over wi-fi or Bluetooth (so local multiplayer only, presumably), while the game itself will add cannons, pinball bumpers, multi-ball, doors, magnets, fans, lasers and a host of other obstacles to give the ball and maze game the extra depth it deserves.

Labyrinth has been downloaded over 10 million times, apparently, so chances are a lot of people are eagerly awaiting this sequel. Check out the trailer below.

Adobe Town wins a reprieve from natural gas leasing in its Citizen’s Proposed Wilderness. The Bureau of Land Management removed 15 parcels comprising more than 14,800 acres of Adobe Town from the December lease sale.

“It’s breath of fresh air the Bureau of Land Management has decided to draw a line in the sand and not lease away one of our most cherished places,” said Nada Culver, Senior Counsel at The Wilderness Society in a press release. “This is proof when people from all walks of life stick up for a special spot, we can move mountains and ensure new generations Americans will always have a place to hunt, camp and hike.”

Much of the rock in Adobe Town is really just sandstone, easily eroded or crumbled away. (Photo/Morgan E. Heim)

Abobe Town’s labyrinth of hoodoos and canyons make it reminiscent of Bryce Canyon, except in Adobe Town, there are no trails to guide your way. Wyoming declared the area “very rare or uncommon” in 2007, a designation that afforded the land some protection, but not from future oil and gas development. Adobe Town has been one of the most hotly contested regions of the Red Desert, receiving 89,000 comments mostly in favor of its protection during the revision of the Great Divide land-use plan. But leasing continued.

The removal in November of the 15 nominated parcels from the BLM lease marks parts of Adobe Town as too environmentally important to warrant leasing at this time.

Pronghorn munch on sage brush just outside Adobe Town in Wyoming's Red Desert.(Photo/Morgan E.
“This lease deferral is the first sign that the BLM has started to listen, and could mark the dawn of a new day when oil and gas development proceeds cautiously, and crown jewel landscapes like Adobe Town get the protection they deserve,” said Erik Molvar, a wildlife biologist with Biodiversity Conservation Alliance in a press release. “The BLM deserves credit for making a sound decision.”

This is my 8th time attending NYWC. This event has become a spiritual pilgrimage of sorts to me. I

This is my 8th time attending NYWC. This event has become a spiritual pilgrimage of sorts to me. I have grown so much spiritually, theologically, in youth ministry philosophy, and in methodology. Every year at NYWC I experience some kind of paradigm shift or major growth. In other words, NYWC is a Game Changer.

My first year was in 2002 in Nashville with my wife. I knew very little about Mike Yaconelli, YS, and the larger world of youth ministry. Just attending that year changed my entire perspective on youth ministry. I was with thousands of people dealing with the same issues and having the same heart for students as me! And I was affirmed and celebrated for what I do and who I am. That was life changing.

Other years have taught me about:

spiritual formation and contemplative practices (my own and for the students in our church),

creative ways to use video and technology in a church context (thank you John Falke for opening my world up to the wonders and fun of Photoshop!),

exposed me to authors and speakers whose wisdom and insight have lifted me to new levels of thinking, challenged my worldview, and formed my theology…people like Donald Miller, Rob Bell, Tony Campolo, Shane Claiborne, Marko, and Mike Yaconelli.

equipped me with real-life, practical ideas that have infused my youth ministry with creativity and freshness.

There have been years where the Game Changer came in the form of a speaker (Louie Giglio’s talk on “I know I am not, but I know I AM” still informs much in my life), an idea from a seminar or just from walking around and observing, an experience like the Prayer Room or the Labyrinth, or from a Critical Concerns Course (Rob Bell and Mike King and Michael Novelli).

But this year is different. Every year I’ve been to NYWC, I’ve always had my wife, and for the past 6 years I’ve brought a team of adult leaders–from 2 to 7! But due to financial reasons, I was only able to come by myself this year. I was more than bummed about that in the weeks and days leading up to it. Not because I’m shy about meeting new people, but because it was going to make this year (an NYWC already filled with uncertainty and change) so different.

But that is what has given me this year’s Game Changer! The theme of this year is simple: connections…relationships…collaboration…networking. I have met more people from around the WORLD this year, people who love Jesus and kids like I do, people who struggle with the same issues I do!

In a way it’s come full circle from my first year; except this time, I’m not the newbie. It shocks me to think about this…but I’m the veteran! At least as far as NYWC’s go! I have so enjoyed getting to me people, share ideas, laugh and pray together. From eating dinner Thursday night with 15 total strangers, to connecting with them again throughout the weekend, to Open Space Saturday, to connecting on a deeper level with another youth minister from my town…I have experienced something I probably never would have if I had brought 8 people from my youth ministry.

So here’s to a new era in my approach to youth ministry–collaboration and networking, and hopefully becoming a part of the broader conversation. Another life-changing year at NYWC.

LABYRINTH WORKSHOP, Sunday November 29 at 12:30 p.m.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol used to represent a pilgrimage or holy journey. Today, it is used as a tool to deepen spirituality and prayer. Although it looks like a maze, the labyrinth is actually a single path which loops back on itself, drawing the walker ever toward the centre, and encouraging quiet or silent prayer, thought and meditation.

Our workshop will be approximately 90 minutes long, and will take place after worship on Sunday. Participants will learn about the spiritual discipline of walking a labyrinth and will make “finger labyrinths” to take home.

Facilitators: Tim Purvis and Cheryl Mason. Cost: $10 per person to cover materials. Bring a bag lunch.

On Halloween, I went to this Halloween party with a friend of mine at her school. A little FYI, we don’t go to the university and we met in high school. Anyway, at the party, I noticed this girl who was dressed up as Sarah from Labyrinth. At first, I didn’t know that she was supposed to be Sarah. So, I went up to her and asked her what she was supposed to be. So, she told me and I got it. Apparently, when she told everybody else who she was supposed to be, no one got it until me. I just found it interesting because apparently Labyrinth isn’t that popular with my generation.

I know this is a blog about faith and history, but sometimes it’s a blog about faith keeping us sane in our graduate school journey.

I have had a particularly difficult week with my work (and life, to be honest). I have struggled and wrestled with my work in monumental ways, which has in turn yielded little progress. I have come to hate it, to second guess myself, to question my calling, etc. In the grand scheme of things I suppose it’s just a dissertation, but it’s hard to tell yourself that in the thick of things.

As I biked home from my coffee shop/office for the day on Wednesday, I decided to stop at a neighboring university to walk the labyrinth outside their chapel. Labyrinths have a diverse history and record of uses, but churches have long used labyrinths as meditation tools. They resemble a maze, but there is only one way to walk and that way guarantees coming to the center.

I entered with the word peace on my heart and mind, and meditated on God’s peace and guidance as I slowly followed the winding path. About 3/4 of the way through, I became incredibly frustrated. I could see the exit and felt tempted to just walk out. I could see the center, but could not understand how I was going to get there.

It’s the same with finishing my Ph.D. All I can see some days is a tangled mess that I’m in the middle of. I’ve come to far to just walk out, but the path to the end seems impossible. In the labyrinth, I determined to just walk slowly, to just keep moving, to trust that God would help me to the end. And I made it to the center.

I’m trying to apply that 10 minute experience to my life-to just keep walking, to trust, to put something on the page or go to the library or meet with an adviser even when I don’t want to. The end is in sight. And I’ll get there.
