It was evening, the yesterdays ‘chores’ ‘were over, Gàidhlig class was over & I was free to lay back & do nothing. So I did! Watched the boob-tube all night … Thursday evening is Survivor night in our house & while I normally don’t enjoy these types of shows I enjoy making fun of the participants nitt-picking; bickering & making boastful plans about how they can lead the others to their doom. Best part of course is when they’re the ones who get the ‘boot to the arse’!!! But my favourite shows are generally the Reno/DIY more especially the Cooking shows. Last night it was a Reno show …. hmm? I’m thinking that a wall needs moving.

And today I worked on carving fish fins for my present project. A Paiute Cutthroat Trout indigenous to the one area of north eastern California. Since then I have been working on a poster for the local Arts Council’s March exhibition.

It’s Friday evening, and I believe it’s time to head down the basement, have a nice bottle of Samuel Smith’s fine brew & then knock a few balls around.

Slàinte mhor a h-uile duine Best to you all!

“The only difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to be credible.

“The only difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to be credible. – Mark Twain”

Well we’ve moved again … Not really a surprise for a lot of folks who know us & not really much of a surprise for most to find out we’re back in LA (La Ronge, SK) It’s great to be here …. again.

We left the Island in early June & once again drove across this great country …

A look back at the Island ...

We’ve been here a little over a month now …Pam has started her job & our deal will close in a couple of weeks. I am still recovering from the move & am catching up with a bit of R&R as well as checking out what will need attention with the house. And what will need to be done to make this into an accessible home.

notice the how big the driveway is

Temporary ramp needs to be raised & a landing created … so I don’t go flying off the steps & create another style of ‘landing’.

looks like something even Evil Knievel wouldn't tackle.

Our house is made from ‘dressed’ upright octagonal logs with a tongue & groove assembly. Each log is flattened & grooved to allow the tongue to connect the logs. If look closely at the flowers you will see the purple lupins on the left … a little Island reminder. Eh?

a few flowers to weed, eh?

The backyard has a very nice garden with an area for vegetable, etc. There are also 2 apple tree, a raspberry, strawberry & Saskatoon berry patches & a large garden shed. A great yard for Molly & Chesney to wander & enjoy all those new smells … cats, squirrels, etc. And to nibble on a few raspberries.

just glimpse of the backyard

And while the basement’s not what we’d call a ‘rec’ room as you can see it’s had a bit of work done to it …

... soon to be a pool room! great eh?

… anyone looking for a bar? We’re selling this one. “We don’t serve no stinkin’ drinks in this pool hall!” You’ll have to make do with beer or straight-up drinks here!

The area of LA we’re in this time has pavement & sidewalks, albeit no curb-cuts . But hey … it’s early yet! It’s close to both the supermarket, library, etc. There are definitely some gravel streets close by. Molly & I pass this one on the way to the library.

gravel street ... but lots of nice street lights.

Well should post this & get working on the next one. This one was a long time coming but it seems the writer’s block is broken.

This graphite drawing of the Bison Hunt is by Saskatchewan Artist ~ Gary Natomagan

Speaking of Saskatchewan …. This past week’s events has made me get off m’duff & start writing the Traveller’s Journal again. Last Thursday Pam was offered a very good position back up in La Ronge, SK … {henceforth this town will be written / known as LA.} After we weighed the pros & cons of another long distance move we decided to ‘go for it’. The chance of fulltime work here on the Island is so small & that we both really enjoyed being up there last time made the decision very easy. Last time we had problems with finding housing & even harder time finding one’s that could be made accessible were the main reason for our early departure. Now we have a house to go to one with an existing garden too … which is the ideal place for me to maintain my present level of physical strength.

And now a good friend from LA has offered to drive the truck with our belongings out to northern Saskatchewan … so come early June we’ll be back on the road again. Not a bad thing all in all, eh? And another adventure for the Martin’s of PEI

I am planning on updating our adventures here so keep watching … in between packing & organizing & planning the trip I’ll be dropping a few lines here .

BTW For those who would prefer the Gàidhlig please stay tuned I’ll be adding to it as soon as I get a moment to write there.

It’s Thursday March 15th, 4:20pm here in La Rouge & we are in the final stage of packing

It’s Thursday March 15th, 4:20pm here in La Rouge & we are in the final stage of packing & preparing for the movers. Only the lift left to dismantle & pack And that can only be done when I use it to go down it for the last time! And once down, on will go the white hard hat & I will supervise… of course. Both of us are exhausted, surrounded by boxes & dismantled furniture except for the couch which is what my exhausted pain ridden body is lying on. No energy or ambition to take a photo. Ed, the moving company driver has arrived this evening from Prince Albert to get as early a start as possible to morrow morning. Another maritimer who likes to travel with a small dog … a Chihuahua of course! So once I find out he’s from the east the first thing I ask is “do you want a cuppa tea?” And with canned milk in hand I set him up with a cup …

Ed took the majority of our belongings down that evening & will finish in the morning.

Friday 16 Mar. 2007

Up before ‘Crow Piss’ & pacing the floor waiting for it all to start! Coffee cup in hand I dig out my tools & begin to remove the lift parts that I can handle. The 3 exceptional friends who I arranged to help remove & pack the lift arrive on time! Which is why I call them exceptional … up & on time so early in the morning & on a workday! What luck folks we are, eh?

Anyway to make a long story short … all went smoothly & we were finished in a little more than an hour!

As much as I’m sad to be leaving this beautiful place & wonderful people we’re definitely on our way in a week … back to our home on the Island. Back to another beautiful place with great people … Back to my studio/ shop with it’s pool table … Back to the pitter-patter of many tiny Chihuahua feet running underwheel {underfoot for Pam} …

Well I finally dusted off the camera & took some photos of the latest carvings I’m working

Well I finally dusted off the camera & took some photos of the latest carvings I’m working on … the first piece displayed here is of a Rainbow Trout. At first I thought of creating a jumping scene but have been leaning toward another idea. Time will tell … eh?

I only use hand took for carving the wood down to it’s final shape & it’s going to be very, very slow. I prefer the razor thin knives & gouges to the power carving tools. Much quieter & I really enjoy the slower pace.

As a change of pace I like to work in bone. Because of the way I treat the raw bone the final product always comes out looking & feeling like ivory. A nice material to carve. Actually I use needle files to carve rather than knives. The bone is initially shaped with a power carver using diamond bits.

This first carving, a ‘Jack-Fish’ is made from bone found on the shores of Cape Breton, NS. This why the colour is a yellow rather than the ivory white of the other pieces ;

Most of these designs are based on the fish hook shape ;

… So stay tuned for further developments of this carving.

Uill, gun tèid e gu math dhomh an-duigh
Well, wish me luck for today …

Finally got the ‘new’ computer setup & now have some time to write the latest news o

Finally got the ‘new’ computer setup & now have some time to write the latest news of our adventure here in LA (they like to call La Ronge here). And maybe rant or at babble a bit or some sort of blather but not many photos. Weather & street conditions have prevented me from bombarding you with lots of La Ronge photos but keep watch … the weather’s got to break soon. Eh?

To answer the question will “The Travellers” be leaving soon? To make it short…

YES! As for when, well that’s the $64,000 question … in a nutshell sometime between now & the end of April. You might ask why when we’ve enjoyed ourselves here so much & have met so many wonderful people. Aside from the winter problems our Chihuahuas have been facing with the -25°C to -34°C temperatures, even with their MuttLuks on! The lack of physicalactivity in the winter here has accelerated my Post- polio condition & this weakness & fatigue has evenstarted to affect my work in the studio. Enough to even bother the brush work when painting a piece.
NUTZ !! To put it mildly …

Back home on the Island I was much busier in winter & all year long … not that I was able to complete a lot of anything at any one time but I was more active than doing the ‘nothing’ what-so-ever I’m accomplishing here. Pam’s reason for going, aside from the Chihuahuas ‘winter blues’ is her career. Wants to improve her working skills & as well being in a better able to help her clients. So she’s been sending out her resumes from here to the Atlantic.

From what I’ve seen & experienced with the little advocacy I’ve managed here the bureaucracy can be quite hard-headed & cheap in this province. And the NDP of Saskatchewan has no interest in it’s constituents at all! They have completely turned me off that party completely! But that’s another story … & for another rant!

The other major factor in our decision to leave is the total lack of housing. Couldn’t even buy one let alone rent one. The apartment we’re in now is probably the best place we have ever had but it’s location is most definitely not during the winter & mud seasons. And when so while it’s sad to be leaving here {whenever that is} it’s great to be looking forward to a new adventure!

Being house-bound does have it’s advantages though … except for a bit of touch-ups I’ve finally completed my latest carving with 3 fish as you can see below.

Also I have started carving a new one. A jumping fish – a cutthroat trout this time… An all wood full detail carving this time … & with a habitat. I’ve decided that all my work from now on will include a ‘representation’ of a habitat to complete / compliment the composition. No picture at the moment but will as soon as I ‘develop’ the latest roll on the memory card. Have to get some photos of Molly in her new MuttLuks put up too but that’s my next bit of blather for here…

Uill, gun tèid e gu math dhomh an-duigh
Well, wish me luck for today …

Now if I could just remember what is was I would do or wouldn’t do when that day finally arrived … ? The WeatherNetwork.com says the normal temperature for La Ronge, SK is 3.2°C & yet it is -22°C at the moment!

Here’s a couple of pictures of our situation here afer the snows arrive …

The Hill by our Apartment building

And the only part of our street I my can get my wheelchair to go after a snowstorm! Up & down the hill is the easy part after that I have to deal with the town’s lack of snow clearing. Especially at the corner where the streets pavement begins … go figure?

For the past week the evening temperatures having been dropping steadily. Not really dropping to any

For the past week the evening temperatures having been dropping steadily. Not really dropping to anything unbearable at least for this Island couple… if it were the month of February on PEI but it’s only the beginning of November! And not what we were expecting this time of year.

Until the recent snowfall of 15 cms (approx 6 inches) I had been easily walking Cruiser at least 2 kms each day & while it seemed a tad cold I didn’t mind it or even the paltry 5 or 10cms of snow already on the ground … & like any sensible Canadian I was dressed for it. I found it rather refreshing zipping around the town, the parks & lakes. And Cruiser, my wee German Shepherd polar bear! Then the rains came & turned all streets, gravel & pavement ones into a very large skating rink for poor Cruiser. He walked very, very carefully so he wouldn’t slip & slide or worse, slide under my 325b wheelchair. Fortunately, the combined weight of myself & the electric wheelchair kept me stable & able to maintain a safe pace for him.

THAT’S SNOW DOG

But as soon as the 15 cms of snow dropped on top of that ice I was the one crippled. Stuck in the snow. My wheels spinning uselessly, greased by the 15cms of snow on the icy roads. Strangely enough, the steep hill beside our apartment building was no problem for the chair. Nor was the gravel street just beside our building. My “slick problems” began as soon as I got to the pavement at the corner of the our short street… at that point I got stuck, again, & again … Fortunately the A&W is at the corner is a popular teen hangout & one of those fine youths immediately ran to my rescue & got me to get going again.

Turns out Cruiser not only likes the cold he definitely loves snow! Romping & jumping around! Desperately wanting to try out those regular 2 kms runs he was used to. And very confused why I wasn’t as eager as he is to go on those hiking trails. Cruiser, being a very big fellow also needs these long walks to help keep him regular. He has his favourite spots for this most important tasks, key spots for his daily ‘routine’. Now no longer accessible by myself & my mighty wheelchair. Stunned at my sudden stubbornness not to take to the trails he just stands & patiently waits for me. As these nights get colder & the walks become much shorter our time outside is becoming much longer, … & longer, … & longer, it gets colder, … & colder, … & colder … for me sitting so still in my wheelchair! As for Cruiser, he’s as happy as a polar bear on an ice flow running, jumping, & frolicking as best he can under anchored to the ‘old guy’. We are now spending an hour or more seeking just that ‘right spot’ the -20°C evening temperatures are less , & less exhilarating . The silver lining being that we can still handle that steep hill.

So folks all I can say is the hell with “but it’s a dry cold“. Give me a dry winter ~ no more of that friggin’ rain & warm temperatures skimming the ground with ice! My kingdom for those frigid but lovely dry & well packed snows crunching under wheels. Now that’s something this Canadian can handle! Eh?

Addendum: 6:40am Central Time; Yippee!! I found a safe way to avoid ‘the’ corner … through the Northlands Community College parking lot over to the next street, from there Cruiser & I were able to cross the main street & then to the park at lake’s edge once again. Happiness reigns.

And now it’s snowing again … expected to amount to more 10cms. I wonder what will happen when Pam goes away overnight again?

It’s not the usual weather Pam & I would have expected back home on the Island this time of yea but not totally unexpected. I was told by several folks here that Halloween brought snow & colder weather as well as the goblins & witches … At the moment the temperature on Prince Edward Island is 6°C & here in La Ronge, SK it’s -12°C. But hey, no worries, it’s a dry cold!

Seriously it wasn’t all that bad … Cruiser my new assist German Shepherd dog & I were out for over an hour & a ½ with no ill effects. Cruiser even manged a bit more walking in the lake … just beyond the ice. On a strong leash of course. Have to get this wonderful fellow a brandy keg for his collar! Who knows he might be able to moonlight?

Uill, gun tèid e gu math dhomh an-duigh
Well, wish me luck for today …

Uill mo chairdean, , tha i sgòthachan an seo agus tha i fionnar an-diugh.
Well my friends, it’s cloudy & cool here & it’s cool.

Bidh sin a’ cù nuadh againn ~ We’re getting a new dog! But not our usual Chihuahua addition. This fellow will mature at around 38 – 40 kgs {85 – 90 lbs in American, eh?} … just a little fellow.

So why would a pair of peaceful loving individuals like us want to add any more mayhem to their quiet ‘Chihuahua’ home? Well that’s a good question! This new ‘Chihuahua’ will at the time of maturity weigh more than 10 times the average size of one of our Chihuahuas. Unfortunately the temperament of the German Shepherd putting him in a ‘herd’ of Chihuahuas might be like Gulliver living in Lilliput. The noise & mayhem will most likely not change … much.

This adventure all began when we decided it was time to have another big dog around the house. And, as you may know, there’s nothing like having a large, polite, big ol’ dog lying around the house blocking the doorways & leaving bloody big tufts of fur on floor to collect in the wheels & axles of wheelchairs!

So we’ve spent the past while web-surfin’ for a large dog, not specifically for a German Shepherd breed … at first, but definitely searching for one to be a suitable Service Dog as well. Time for Molly, my present helper to kick back & be treated like the Queen she is & get spoiled! Okay, okay a lot more than I already do.

We checked the Rescue sites at first but eventually graduated to the German Shepherd Dog Rescue sites & then to the GSD breeder kennel sites. In the process we also come in contact with a whole other breed of dog that tweaked the breeder in us. A really very interesting & beautiful breed of dog … but that’s for another posting.

And then we landed on an Ontario breeder website & found what was described as the ‘perfect pup’!

This Ontario breeder raises German Shepherd Dogs; & trains dogs & train the trainers. Here’s an excerpt of the message we received from the breeder on my soon to be new Cruiser.

“He is a very calm, sensible, gentle, affectionate, soft spoken boy with a heart of gold. His obedience is great and his manners are even better. He has been trained primarily to be a partner, wheelchair assistant and indicator for the deaf. His name is Cruiser, he is 10 months on Oct 15th. He is gentle as a lamb and good looking to boot.”

He’s expected to arrive from Ontario probably on the 23rd of this month. Pam’ll have to drive to Saskatoon to pick him up. A trip of about 10 hours of driving & hopefully there won’t be a long wait at the airport for Cruiser’s flight to arrive.

Of course I do not need to say there’ll be more on this wee fellow in future postings as well as on any of the new Chihuahuas we’ll be looking at in the near future.

Uill, gun tèid e gu math dhomh an-duigh
Well, wish me luck for today …

Sunday was another spectacular day here in La Ronge, SK A sunny clear dy with the temperature going up to 24°C & no wind to speak of. So we decided to go for a drive & do some exploring around some of the communities & back roads south of La Ronge.

Lake Wayakwin, Montreal Lake, Emerald Pond, & Potato River to name a few … we took along a picnic which consisted of chicken, black cherry pop & some delicious bannock. Which I had just baked from a great recipe I received recently from Spud, a friend back home on the Island. An awesome recipe must add! All of which we enjoyed by Emerald Pond while watching water bugs, 3 or 4 varieties of dragonflies & the fish that jumped for them … a tasty picnic of their own.

I tried & tried to catch a photo of them mid jump but to no avail, as you can see by the picture below! Nothing but the rings …

And the next photo is of another of Saskatchewan’s ‘Point of Interest’ signs to help tourists get local information. Fortunately we didn’t need to park on the shoulder to get info at this one … there’s too much information on this sign to repeat but there is a note below this photo.

And to finish off this day of adventure a photo of Pam & off in the distance is Montreal Lake.

So how’s the weather? Eh?

A couple of days ago the wind was whipping the waters on the lake around speeds hitting at 25 to 30 kms … the waves were driving against rocks splashing at least 20 centimeters high. WOW! Well it could be here in Saskatchewan … not sure but I did get that impression from the local residents. This would be considered a normal day back on Prince Edward Island & not much of a breeze, especially considering they maritimes are now entering the hurricane season. But from an amateur photographer’s point of view it did present ideal conditions for a shot or 2.

So in a nut shell … the weather here is fantastic! Warming to 25°C today or so & for all of next week too. If the weather reports are to be believed … excluding CBC’s “E-talk Weather reports” of course.

Well it’s been a while since my last entry. I’ve been busy plugging away in my studio, lots of pebbles being carved & painted for my latest fish carving’s habitat. It took lots of time to process the photos that have been collecting in the folders on my laptop. And lastly, I been committing more time to my daily Gaelic studies. These are a few of the reasons for neglecting my wee journal … well that & procrastination.

For the past couple of weekends Pam & I have been wandering around this area exploring & learning more about the countryside as well as shooting more photos, of course. Last Saturday we found ourselves in an area 15 kms north of here where there were 3 of the forest fires that threatened 3 small communities, some summer cottages & fishing resorts. And much closer to home, {so to speak}, La Ronge itself where these fires were the cause of the cause of a week of extreme smoke plaguing the town of La Ronge ….

I hope the following few photos that can depict the devastating effects of forest fires … although good old ‘Ma Nature’ does turn this destruction into a positive. The Jack Pine, for instance uses the extreme heat to help in the reseeding & Morell mushrooms love to grow in areas that have recently recently been burned. The earth is quite amazing isn’t it?  One area on the Allan Trails near English Bay, SK even had a cabin & an outbuilding left untouched by the fire but surrounded by a burned area!{click on photos below}

This view is taken at a favourite park not far from our place & a one of the best places where Molly, The Princess Chihuahua & I get to walk in this area. Also where I’ve gotten the best opportunities to view wildlife. One time I was able to observe a pair of eagles hunting over the lake & soar so high in the sky that I kept losing sight of them only being able to catch sight again when they turned & the shimmering sunlight reflecting off their bodies showed their movement. Watched for an incredible ½ hour or so! Good thing Molly is a patient girl, eh? Wish Chesney wasn’t such a wiry little guy cause I know he’d like it too.
Anyway let me know what you think.

PS Thanks Dale Now I’ve just got to figure out to do the other features??? Blogroll lists, Links, etc
