I have written here about deals on gear before. Black Friday is supposed to be a day of one time dea

I have written here about deals on gear before. Black Friday is supposed to be a day of one time deals. The idea is to bring you into the stores to buy other non discounted stuff along with the cheap deal. The problem with this idea is that the odds are against you on actually walking away with a deal. Retailers often only stock a small quantity of the deeply discounted items. Do you really want to get up at 3am and stand in the cold just so you could find out that they only had 2 $300 HDTVs in stock and you are third in line? In my opinion it is way too much work to get that deal than its worth.

The truth is you are not going to find a Black Friday deal on a Canon 300mm f2.8 IS. Believe me I have looked. What you will find are some of the lesser items you need such as bags, memory cards and various off brand accessories. I have compiled a list of some Black Friday deals along with some things that you can buy right now at discounted prices. These are things that I believe a working photographer might use.

Black Friday Deals:

Memory Cards from Sandisk. Quite a few retailers are offering deals on memory cards and not just shitty, slow, off brand SDHC cards. Office Depot has 8gig Ultra II CF cards for $19.99 and 4gig Ultra II SDHC cards for $12.99. That is a pretty good deal on an 8gig card although it is unsure whether or not you can order these online on Friday to avoid the crowds (I’m not sure how big crowds can get at OFFICE DEPOT). Remember HD video from your 5D Mark II or 7D is only 5.5megabyte per second. These cards are rated for 15mb/s. Abes of Maine also has good deals on memory cards: Sandisk 4gig Extreme III SDHC or CF cards for $19.99 and Sandisk 8gig Extreme III SDHC cards for $29.95.

Hard Drives. There aren’t very many stellar deals on HDs. However, Target is offering 1Terabyte Western Digital Elements desktop drives for $59.99. They don’t actually list this drive on the website being currently for sale, so I am not sure how much of a discount this is for them. Amazon currently lists the drive for $99.99. It has a high rating with customers.

Cameras. The truth is that most of the cameras that I would even consider buying, either a point-and-shoot or DSLR, are cheaper right now online from Amazon, B&H Photo and Video, J&R or Adorama Camera. Also a lot of the cameras that are listed in the circulars are older models or have been discontinued.

Current Deals:

Memory Cards. Adorama Camera currently has some great deals on bulk cards. Some of these require rebates but most do not. You can get 3 Sandisk Extreme III 4gig CF cards for $89.99 without a rebate. That makes each card $29.98. You can also get 5 (five, thats right, five) Sandisk Extreme III 2gig CF cards for $49.99 without a rebate. That makes each card less than 10 bucks. If you are willing to fight to get a rebate you can get 3 Sandisk Extreme III 8gig cards for $94.95. That is with an $80.00 rebate, so each card would be $31.65. Great deals available right now.

Hard Drives. Newegg has the Lacie 2Terabyte 2Big Quadra external hard drive for $294.99 with free shipping. I use Lacie drives for everything and love them. Lacie currently lists the drive at $399.99 on its own store. Western Digital drives are pretty cheap everywhere right now.

Digital Cameras. Pretty much every ad shows a discounted digital camera that is actually cheaper right now online. Best Buy has the Canon SD1200 IS p-n-s for $179.99 on Friday with an extra battery (off brand) and case (also cheap off brand). You can get the same camera at B&H for $170.95 with free shipping and no sales tax. Best Buy also lists the Canon Rebel T1i with 18-55mm lens for $699.99 on Friday. You can get the same kit for $719.00 with free shipping and no sales tax today from Amazon.com. The reason why I keep listing the no sales tax thing is because sales tax in Colorado is anywhere from 6% to 9% depending on the city. So a $699.99 camera is actually $748.99 with tax at 7%. Cheaper online.

The point I am trying to make with this post is that you need to do your homework before venturing out to fight the crowds. Often things that you will actually want to buy are just a cheap click away. I know I will be enjoying my coffee in my bath robe, waiting for deliveries, while everyone else is fighting for a “deal” on Friday.

If you have a computer, it’s likely that it is a laptop. A handy, take-anywhere, do anything compute

If you have a computer, it’s likely that it is a laptop. A handy, take-anywhere, do anything computer which has one shortcoming: storage. You can of course stick in a bigger hard drive, but that doesn’t help if you have a ton of movies, and it certainly makes backing up trickier. This is where Lacie’s new Network Space comes in. The sleek block of black is designed to make hooking up easy, even without wires

To show how convoluted laptop management can get, let’s look at my own (admittedly rather paranoid) setup. My MacBook has a 500GB hard drive inside. At the desk, I hook into a USB hub to which is connected a 500GB external drive and used by Time Machine. In addition, I have a bunch of movies and TV shows on another 500GB drive, and every few days I make a bootable backup to a smaller 320GB, bus-powered hard drive using the excellent Super Duper, from Shirt Pocket software. Finally, I use Backblaze for off-site backup ($5 per month, or the price of two bottles of beer in my local bar).

That’s a lot of cables and a lot of mental overhead trying to remember to do it all. And that’s why the Network Space looks so attractive. NAS (Network Attached Storage) isn’t new, but this Lacie gets a lot right. First, it $160 for a terabyte, almost $100 less than Apple’s Time Capsule. It has a sleep mode, can be woken over the network and the USB port means you can hook up another drive to it. There is even an option to control the glowing light, and it will work as an iTunes server, and serve files to Macs, Windows machines and games consoles.

Perfect right? You can just throw this in a closet with a power supply and forget about it. Sadly, no. You need to run a cable to your router as the Network Space is Ethernet-only, with no Wi-Fi. So close, Lacie, so close. You almost made the perfect solution. Maybe I should buy that Time Capsule after all.

The boy seriously blacked out. He reeked of alcohol; you could even taste the alcohol without making out with him. I took a big whiff of the air surrounding me. Whiskey. Of all the drinks, why whiskey? I let a sigh escape my lips, and reached out to him, attempting to pick him up/drag him into my apartment. I needed some help. I looked up to see if our band’s apartment was burned down to the ground yet….nope: still intact, brick by brick. I could see Reece making out with a really pretty girl up against the window, fogging it up. Geez…Since he was pressed up against her, I began waving my arms and jumping up and down to get his attention. He finally opened his eyes, when I sat on the ground, my butt starting to freeze from the driveway. Reece looked at me for a sec, then to the girl, then down to the pair of legs hanging out of the van. He opened his mouth, and to my dismay, began laughing and pointing at us, while the girl laughed too. Reece said something to the girl, and he disappeared through the crowd of happy partiers.

I got up and looked at the boy. He was surely cute, just like Taylor had said, but I wasn’t going to be raping any guys tonight. Just not my thing. Reece finally came, jogging towards us.

“Who is this?” He asked, getting up close and poking the passed out boy. The guy groaned and turned to his side. “…Well….?”

“Taylor found him in our van, and I agreed to take him to our apartment.” I said staring at the guy. I really needed to find out his name soon.

“We aren’t some kind of charity or lost children organization.” Reece answered.

“I know. But I felt bad.”

“Ooh…Lacie has a heart! Or she just wants to fuck this poor guy.”

I rolled my eyes, could he be any more immature? “We’re having a party. The more the merrier.”

“Right. I’ll carry him.” Way to state the obvious, Reece.

“Well, no duh. That’s the reason I tried to call you over here.” I watched as Reece hauled the boy onto his back, and during the process, the guy began muttering strange things. Ancient languages? He needs to speak English.

We had finally got him up to the apartment room, and I didn’t have to do a single thing. Reece set him onto a couch, and the guy slept as happy as a baby.

“Thanks, Reece. Now you can go back to your ‘girlfriend’.” I almost had to shout. It was a wonder how we didn’t get kicked out. Obviously, no old people lived here, or everyone joined our parties.

“I have no one to get back to; she’s slobbering over some other dude now. Plus her kisses were too wet and like a dog’s.”

“Gross.”

“Whatever, you wish you were the one under me. Wink wink.”

“Go away you sick bastard.” I said, play shoving him, and laughing. “It’s party time! Woo! Goodbye Reece!” I pushed and shoved through the sea of people, to get to the refrigerator, so I could grab a cold beer. I saw Craig and Rhianne, not kissing, but holding hands. They were both holding beers, but Rhianne wasn’t stable, she kept moving around like she was drunk.

“Oh my gosh! What a huge shock! You guys aren’t kissing!” I faked my surprise and rummaged through the fridge.

“We don’t always kiss, you silly silly goose, Doily.” Rhianne said her words slurring. She was drunk. And she got my name wrong. Sure, lace and doilies are similar, but they don’t sound anything alike!

“It’s Lacie, hon. Your girlfriend’s drunk, Craig.” I pointed out.

“Thanks, Captain Obvious.” Craig replied. I chuckled and held up my beer can, like I was going to give a toast, “No problem.”

I took my sweet time, greeting people I knew, and taking time to chug down portions of my luscious liquid. When I got back to the couch where the boy was sleeping on, he was not there. I scanned the room, twisting and turning my body, but he was still nowhere in sight. Even though I wasn’t his babysitter or anything, I felt responsible for him. I had this odd urge to want to be there when he woke up.

“Shit.”

The Hendrix. My band. Lacie. Who? My name. Right. Stay focused, bitch. Read the notes. Do you even know what measure you are on?!

“ Yoo hoo! Lacie ArmWall!” Craig, the lead singer, said angrily waving his hands in front of my weary face. I was too damn tired to care. I was too hungover and I was too drunk to notice who I made out with at Reece’s party. I slowly turned my face to Craig, staring up at him with half closed eyes.

“…WHAT.” I grunted, enunciating my word. Craig let out a frustrated, and rather loud sigh and sat on the patched up, torn plaid couch in our garage.

“We have a gig today, guys. If we keep this up, we’ll get booed off the st-“

Reece placed his Les Paul against the wall, and sat down next to Craig.

“Dude, we sound fucking amazing! We’ve been practicing for the past two months and the songs Sonny wrote are beyond fantasizing about! So, just calm your big tits and just relax man.”

“Yes, PLEASE!” I groaned, my head was throbbing; quite the experience a hangover is. Yesterday was going to be the last time I was going to drink as much as I did. Of course, that promise wasn’t going to last long if we were going to have an party at the band’s apartment, after the concert tonight. I put down Vince, my bass, and lay down on the floor, taking advantage of its coolness of the cement.

“I guess I should calm down. We are pretty good anyways. I’m going to go call Rhianne.” Craig got up and pulled out his cell phone and walked away, dialing in her number. He obviously didn’t know about speed dials.

Craig is the most mature one in our band and also the oldest. He takes care of all our financial problems and makes sure we get our share of the payment of our apartment in on time. Although we are in a band, we also have side jobs, you know, just in case. Craig likes to keep his hair nicely swept up and slightly short, unlike Reece and Sonny, who keep their’s nice and long. He literally has grey eyes and when he glares at someone, we laugh, they cringe. Craig unsurprisingly has a girlfriend, who supports our band greatly, and likes to make out with him twenty-four/seven.

Sonny on the other hand, while he does play drums, is the quiet shy one of us. Irony? Why yes. He is the neatest and cleanest, but he doesn’t do the cooking, sadly. He is one year older than me, but is probably more mature than I will ever be. Sonny is rather silent and only speaks when he really needs to, but he’s very poetic and writes all of our songs. Sonny has dark brunette hair and his side swept bangs aren’t as shaggy or as long as Reece’s. His relationship just ended last week, (he ended it) because, well what he said was. “She’s too much of a fucking cunt.” Ah, he’s quite pleasant when he talks, isn’t he?

Reece is our lead guitarist and screamer. Not screamer as in the girly-he’s-so-hot-omg kind of way, but the kind that girls can’t do. He is the middle one. Reece likes to joke around the very most, and lets no one touch his guitar, but somehow his girlfriends are all exceptions. Reece had many, (many) girlfriends. He’s quite the player actually, but always has one girlfriend at a time. Reece, being a player naturally, rebounds too fast after a break up and seems to have a new girlfriend, every week.

I’m surprised that we all came together in this band. We were all in different grade levels so that was an obstacle as well. Reece and Sonny lived in my neighborhood, and someone that Reece knew, knew someone who played guitar and could sing, which turned out to be Craig. We didn’t hold cheesy auditions, because we already all knew each other some way or another. I dropped out of high school, this year, and although my parents didn’t quite support that decision fully, they allowed it, because I joined this band. They were just happy I wasn’t going to be hogging their couch, their T.V. and their house.

We played at many places before, but this bar, was going to be our biggest gig. Why you ask? Because this place is popular; tons of people go there at night and review different bands that make it into there. And we got there. The Hendrix made it.

**

Sonny and I unloaded our equipment and instruments from our beaten down van, while Craig and Reece, talked to the manager of the bar. It wasn’t easy to get on good terms with that stingy man. I really hate him, but what can I do?

“We’re playing at 10.” Reece came over, being his happy self. “We are amazing. We will sound like perfection. Craig will sing like an angel. Haha. I will electrify the room. Sonny will inspire everyone to bang the drums, and you, our dear bassist will ride Vince like you never have. I meant it to sound the way you heard it.” He winked and left us with his thoughts. I shook my head as I carried one of the pieces of the drum set into the backstage. As I walked back outside to grab a few more items, I saw a couple, drilling holes through each other. I closed my eyes for a moment, stopping myself from vomiting my fucking guts out. Guys don’t often dig chicks in bands, but I guess I make an exception. Well, how you can you pass me off?

**

We were finally on stage, the bright lights aimed at us. I was on stage, holding Vince proudly, tapping my hand against him, reassuring him, telling him not to be scared. Not to worry. But the truth was, I was scared. I had this stage fright for years now. It was not good, if we were planning on becoming famous. A large, hand was placed on my shoulder, and when I turned around, it turned out to be Reece.

“There’s nothing to be afraid of, Lacie.” Reece said, noticing my fear. He grinned at me and then turned to smile at the audience.

The audience yelled and screamed, as Reece began, then Sonny, then me. Craig walked up to the microphone, wrapping his thick hand around it, opening his mouth, ready to start. He began singing the lyrics that Sonny wrote, and Reece screamed. It sounded nice and steady. We were sounding just like Reece said we would.

My fingers were moving around Vince’s neck, and my hand was pulsing around his head. When I looked up, the bar was full, a slight fog was hanging around, and the room reeked of alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs. A typical concert for us. They were jumping, screaming, laughing, yelling, and even…singing, holding their cigarettes and drinks.

We transitioned from one song to the next; everyone content with our performance. As we came to an end, only one more thing could be anticipated: our after-the-concert-party. The Hendrix was famous for them. I was even excited.

**

I was the designated band member to load the equipment back into the van. How could they do this to me? I am the girl! I groaned and whined as loud as I possibly could to get the rest of the band’s attention and make them help me, but they were too busy making out with a fan girls or girlfriends, in Craig’s case. I walked back into the back to see if I had forgotten anything. A different band was playing now, The Lying Bastards. They weren’t horrible, but they could be better. Seeing that everything was loaded, I tapped Craig, Reece, and Sonny’s shoulders for them to get off the girls and get into the van. Sometimes, I felt like a mom.

I’ve been doing marketing for many years now and I’ve learned to appreciate the importan

I’ve been doing marketing for many years now and I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of a brand to a business. As a consumer I never really appreciated “brand” as a business strategy at least until I started to equate quality with brand. Quality is not only about the physical aspects of a product. It also reflects upon the soft-side of a product… things like pre-sales and post-sales support. Are you lost with what I am trying to get at? Let me use a real example.

My birthday was coming and my wife asked me what I wanted for a gift. Looking around the only thing I needed was a portable USB DVD drive (reader-writer). So I went to my favorite computer mall and shopped around for what I thought were brands worth looking into. I didn’t pay attention to what I thought were OEM brands and instead opted for those with familiar brand name like Samsung, Lacie, LG, Sony, and Buffalo. There was very little to differentiate the drives – in fact if you didn’t look at the packaging and brand you’d swear they were all from the same manufacturer suggesting not much effort was put in the creative aspect of design. Anyway, I chose the Samsung Ultra Slim External DVD Writer “Super-writemaster” (US-632/633). The retailer said it came with a one-year warranty, “just make sure you got the invoice.”

My wife bought the thing, gift-wrapped it and presented it to me on my birthday. I was very happy. That same evening I unwrapped it, plugged it into my computer, and off it went to work. I burned one DVD containing my archive of photos and stowed the device away. I used it a few more times over the course of the next two months. At the beginning of the third month, the drive stopped working. The light would turn green for a few seconds as you hear the drive motor quietly whirling about. But when the light died, the drive died. I tested it on three laptops – all different brands, each with a different version of Microsoft Windows, nothing.

I tried calling the number on the box. The line was engaged for the five times I attempted to call – different days of the week, different times of the day. Knowing the PR agency for Samsung, I contacted them for help. After several emails I was told that Samsung Hong Kong did not sell this particular drive model in the Territory. So I am stuck with a US$90 brick.

Its not really the money that I care so much about (well, I can be stingy at times so yes money is still important) but its also about the trust you build with the brand. How can Samsung (or your favorite brand) betray your trust and expect you to be loyal to that brand? The excuse that the product you bought is a parallel import is nothing more than an excuse. Yes, its aimed at protecting the local distribution channel I understand that. But what protection does the customer/consumer have when the product was bought from what appears to be a legitimate store?

We are in an increasingly global world where you can buy just about anything from the Internet. Vendors like Samsung are selling on the web as well. But what does it tell you when your favorite supplier renegs on the promise of the brand citing “not bought locally” as the excuse?

I have a 5 year old Iomega external DVD writer. If not for its humongous size, I wouldn’t have asked my wife to buy me the Samsung drive. But old as it is, it still works perfectly each time I plug a blank disc to backup some of my work.

I say boycott brands that don’t honor the promise of their brand regardless of where their product was sold or bought. The obligation (not duty) is on the brand to honor their promise.

One final note about Samsung and the quality of its products. In case you think this is just me ranting my heart out, try Googling “complaints about samsung products” and you’ll be surprise at the results. Go ahead!

I like the idea of viewing my PC-based content on my TV, but hate the idea of the complex set-up tha

I like the idea of viewing my PC-based content on my TV, but hate the idea of the complex set-up that’s so often required by the devices aimed at letting me embrace my inner couch potato. Which is why I like LaCie’s LaCinema Rugged HD, a portable hard drive that l can load up with my favorite content, then plug into my TV for easy viewing.

LaCie calls the LaCinema Rugged HD a “multimedia hard drive” — and, honestly, that’s the best way to describe it. It’s part storage device, as it’s a 500GB USB-powered hard drive that I can connect to my computer to back up my content. But it’s also part set-top box, as it connects to any HDTV (via HDMI or composite A/V) to play back audio and video files and display photos. In fact, the LaCinema Rugged HD is a lot like Iogear’s Portable Media Player, which I reviewed — and liked — earlier this year. But LaCie’s product features two very important upgrades: It supports HD content up to 1080p (the Iogear topped out at 720p), and it includes 500GB of storage (the Iogear drive was limited to 120GB).

Setting up the Rugged HD is easy, largely because there’s really nothing to set up. You attach the drive to your computer via the included USB cable, and drag your content into the movies, music and photos folders, as appropriate. Then simply walk your drive over to your TV, connect it via the include HDMI or composite A/V cables, and turn it on.

LaCie’s menu system is simple, which makes it easy to use. But this simplicity also is reflected in an on-screen menu system that could stand to be livened up; though if you like big white icons on a black screen, you’ll be quite pleased.

The boring interface can also be surprisingly hard to navigate, but that’s because of the LaCinema Rugged HD’s weakest link: the terrible remote. The Rugged HD drive itself has no buttons, so all of your interaction with it is done through the remote, which I despise. Why? Let’s start with the large, circular navigation button. It toggles left and right, and up and down, but feels loose, which makes it hard to press in one direction without sliding it toward another. It also seems like it should have a center button (for “enter” or “OK”), but that’s lacking. In fact, the remote is entirely lacking an “OK” button, despite the fact that an on-screen message repeatedly told me to hit “OK” on the remote. I often found myself tapping aimlessly at buttons in an effort to find my way out of or back into the folders I was browsing.

Once I was able to get my video playing, though, content looked very good. HD videos looked sharp and clear, and the audio was of good quality (if a little low). File compatibility was good, too, as the player handled every video file I threw at it — something I haven’t seen with any set-top box I’ve tested.

LaCie lists the LaCinema Rugged HD at $299.99. That’s a little bit steep, but it does get you a full-featured multimedia player that doubles as a backup hard drive. If only they’d offer it with a remote control worthy of the product itself.

After tweaking my nas to be able to backup my Vista machines to it, I started wondering about its power consumption and lifetime since its disk never seems to spin down. Of course I could get off my chair and turn the thing off when I’m not using it, but that kinda kills the adea of a network share, doesn’t it ?
Since hdparm doesn’t work (it’s a sata disk) first thing I thought of was to try to spin down the disk after a certain idle time using dsparm. No luck there. As a Windows kinda guy, I was unable to get any pre-compiled of self-compiled version of sdparm working.

To make a long story short, I finally rested my case by powering off the device at night using a cron job. Not exactly what I had in mind, but it sure meets the purpose of saving on my electricity bills. Note that, for some reason, poweroff reboots the device, and halt powers it off…

If you want to do so on you Lacie, here you go:

You need shell access, I use telnet. If you don’t: check here

First, make a copy of your crontab entries (there should be one entry from you mediaserver).

Crontab –l > tempcron

Now edit tempcron :

vi tempcron

Press ESC, then i to start editing

Add a line like the one below to shut down at 2:30 AM:

30 2 * * * /sbin/halt

Press ESC, then :, then wq, then enter to save and close the editor

Now apply to crontab:

crontab tempcron

Check your conjobs:

crontab –l

Delete the tempcron file:

rm tempcron

That’s it! Now your nas will poweroff at night automatically.

lacie is name of the company whihc is dealing with the produciton of external hard drives , RAID arrays, computer monitors and optical drives. Lacie produces manylines of hard drives having capacities of upto many terabytes of data along with selective versatility of interfaces like FireWire 800, USB 2.0, and Ethernet. It also manufactures series of mobile bus-powered hard drives.

One of the lacie’s computer display product line is launched just for graphic professionals focussing on color matching. Actually lacie started its businees with two different computer storage companies. The first one is LaCie in Portland, USA and other one is électronique d2 in Paris, France. These two companies mainly concentrates their work on IT storage solutions which is lying on the concept of SCSI interface standard helping in connecting external devices to PC. As SCSI was a brand of apple computer the market for both companies narrowed.

Lacies two faces market competition with several brands such as Seagate Technology ,LG ,Western Digital,Iomega , and archos etc. Lacies main business is lying on external SCSI hard drives , but now one can see varied ranges in its product in recent times to add cd writers . And some these drives are magneto-optical drives, SyQuest drives, tape backup, RAID arrays, mobile USB and FireWire drives etc.

The LaCie Sound2 Speakers are a collaboration between LaCie and Cabasse, one of the most respected hi-fi sound-system companies in the world since 1950.

With their sophisticated and advanced acoustic engineering, the Sound2 Speakers represent a step up from previous generations of USB speakers, and most importantly, demonstrate that high-quality sound doesn’t have to come at a high price. With a Class D Digital Amplifier, magnetic shielding, a bass reflex system, and a 30W total peak system output, the Sound2 Speakers provide amazing sound quality.

Cabasse’s own Wide Band Driver comes with the speakers, helping them to provide some of the best performance, at a great value. The Sound2 Speakers’ built-in USB cable ensures that you’ll never lose it, and when you aren’t using your speakers, you won’t be left with a tangle of wires. In addition, the dual power mode allows you to use the speakers with a USB cable or with the included power supply for optimal quality.
