Now it’s your turn: what are you favourite tracks of 2009?

Ok. So, my second favorite band ever is Lacuna Coil.  They are a much older band than Halestorm.  Been around since 1994.  They have a ton of albums out.  Cristina Scabbia is gorgeous and is an amazing singer.  She and Andrea are also amazing performers.  Oh, and they are Italian.

Ok.  They are goth metal.  Really, they are.  Well, they were…but it’s detached, harmonic, yet dark.  It’s very compelling.  The guitars are often over-laid with keyboards.  The singers use dual-vocals.  In the earlier stuff, there was less Andrea.  He has a rough edge to his voice.  Cristina just has a voice of an angel.  With their newest album, Shallow Life, they went away from what most people are used to from them.  They were more Alt. Hard Rock…yeah kind of unsettled me.  But that’s ok.  The more I listen to it, the more it grows on me.  A ton more Andrea.  Spellbound was really the standout here and got a ton of airplay.  Other good ones are I like It and Underdog.

The older stuff by LC is dark.  It’s hypnotizing if you like it.  It can get monotonous if you don’t like it.  Their first album, In a Reverie, is heavier and doomier than the more commercial Comalies and Karmacode and is followed up by my favorite album Unleashed Memories.  It is mystical.  It hardly uses any electronics and the way the two sing is amazing.  It’s very, very doom.  To Live is To Hide is my favorite track.

Then, they go a little more mainstream for them with Comalies.  They broke out big with Heaven’s a Lie and Swamped/  It’s a really good cd, and when I say more mainstream…uh it’s not mainstream, it’s just more mainstream.

Karmacode’s not my favorite, but it has some good songs.  Our Truth is on Rockband.  Closer and The Game are other good tracks.

The actual people in them band seem great.  From all the interviews, they are all relaxed and really funny.

Cristina is really hilarious.  She has her own column at Hardline Radio.  She is always doing little intervies and advice and all that.  She is really one of my heroes.  For the guys: She is constantly on Revolver’s Hottest Women In Metal, as a lot of the women in these bands I listen to.  She is really the face of Lacuna Coil to casual listeners, which is funny since she was the last member to be added.  She is dating Jim Root of Slipknot.  Oh!  She’s about 37, too.  She really is amazing.

Pe astăzi m-am hotărât, cam cu greu ce-i drept, să scriu un post despre o parte din cele mai ”delicioase” colaborări, din punctul meu de vedere, între diverse trupe şi diverşi artişti. Poate în viitorul apropiat voi mai face posturi de acest gen, în caz că prind bine.

Încep cu capitolul Apocalyptica. Cei care au ascultat vreodata Apocalyptica ştiu foarte bine că aceasta e o trupă total diferită de orice altceva aţi asculta. Diferenţa asta o face faptul că membrii trupei interpretează piese rock pe 4 respectiv 3 violoncele. Ei au început ca trupă de cover pentru Metallica, dovadă fiind şi sufixul numelui. În orice caz, după primul album (”Plays Metallica by Four Cellos”) care e constituit integral din cover-uri Metallica, băieţi au început încet încet să îşi facă propriile piese, dar totushi neîndepărtându-se total de la vechiile obiceiuri, ajungând să facă cover-uri pe Faith No More, Pantera, David Bowie, Rammstein etc.

Revenind la subiectul principal al articolului, de-a lungul celor 7 albume ale trupei, aceştia au făcut diverse colaborări care mai de care mai reuşite. Nu le voi lua în ordine cronologică pentru că nu le ştiu, şi pentru că sunt prea ardelean in momentele de faţa să caut pe net.

În schimb am să încep cu prima, şi anume ”Hope vol.2”. Încep cu această piesă deoarece de obicei când o ascult îmi dă o oarecare stare de euforie. O voce de care nu mulţi oameni ştiu, dar valorificată de Apocalyptica pe bună dreptate, Matthias Sayer, vocalistul trupei Farmer Boys, face din originala ”Hope” o piesă mult mai… interesantă.

A doua piesă, ”S.O.S.”, sau  ”Anything but Love”, colaborare extrem de reuşită a trupei cu Cristina Scabbia, solista trupei Lacuna Coil. Piesa e extrem de reuşită, mesajul e foarte clar trimis, intrumentalul de asemenea este extrem de bun, nu că am putea avea alte aşteptări din partea Apocalypticei.

A treia şi ultima piesă pe care o menţionez de la Apocalyptica în acest post, este binecunoscuta ”Bittersweet”. Posibil cea mai cunoscută colaborare a trupei cu alţi muzicieni, ”Bittersweet” combină cu un succes incontestabil vocea lui Ville Valo (HIM) cu vocea lui Lauri Ylonen (The Rasmus) cu instrumentalul tipic Apocalyptica. Nu sunt sigur că experienţa ”Bittersweet” poate fi descrisă la modul general, cred că diferă de la individ la individ, şi singurul mod să afli cum ţi se pare este să o ascultţi.

Pentru că nu vreau să mă axez în totalitate pe Apocalyptica în acest articol, las celelalte piese pentru nişte posturi viitoare.

O altă colaborare foarte reuşită, pe care eu personal am ascultat-o zile la rând cu mici pauze, este ”Broken”, colaborare între Seether şi Amy Lee. Original, piesa nu conţine vocea solistei de la Evanescence, dar ulterior Seether au făcut un cover pe propria piesă, featuring Amy Lee. Rezultatul a fost foarte reuşit, vocea artistei potrivindu-se aproape perfect cu vocea solistului de la Seether. Oricine a ascultat vreodata Evanescence, ştie foarte bine de capabilităţile vocale deosebite ale solistei. Păstrându-şi tenta Seether, piesa îşi schimbă sunetul datorită vocalistei şi, după părerea mea, mesajul este mult mai clar.

Ultima piesă pe care am s-o menţionez în acest articol este ”Lily was Here”, colaborare între Dave Stewart şi Candy Dulfer. Ştiu că nu sunteţi obişnuiţi cu astfel de exemple din partea mea, dar piesa era prea ”sexy” să nu o menţionez măcar. Ascultaţi cu încredere dar aveţi grijă că piesa provoacă diferite stări ”spirituale”. La ce să te aştepţi altcumva de la o combinaţie între chitară şi saxofon?

De-a lungul articolelor trecute, am mai enumerat diverse piese de genul, diverse ”featuringuri” cum ar fi ” I Don’t Care” (Apocalyptica & Adam Gontier) sau în special ”Lucky” (Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat).

Acestea fiind spuse, vă las să ascultaţi în pace piesele precizate. Sper că v-am sporit curiozitatea cu acest articol, şi vă las cu mioriticul Numa’ Bine!

I comaschi Noxout sono una cover band che nasce dal connubio di due passate realtà, che si sono affermate nel panorama musicale nell’ultimo decennio. E’ infatti dall’unione di alcuni componenti dei Noxex ed alcuni degli Exout che nascono i “NoxOut”. La band propone un repertorio di brani pop-rock sia classici che recenti, riarrangiati e mixati al fine di garantire un ottimo connubio tra qualità e divertimento.

La serata inizia con “A night to remember…Freddie Mercury”, serata in ricordo di Freddie Mercury con la band “Queen Mania” che rende omaggio al cantante scomparso con un vasto repertorio. Special guest Cristina Scabbia dei Lacuna Coil e Clara Moroni, corista di Vasco.
A 18 anni dalla prematura scomparsa di Freddie Mercury, indimenticato cantante dei Queen, è in programma a Milano una serata in suo ricordo, che si preannuncia come uno dei più importanti eventi della stagione per tutti gli amanti della musica e dello spettacolo.
Il 28 Novembre saliranno sul palco principale dell’Alcatraz i QUEENMANIA, popolare tribute band dei Queen che vanta collaborazioni prestigiose, partecipazioni a show televisivi e alla convention ufficiale dei Queen in Inghilterra, con alle spalle centinaia di concerti tra Italia, Regno Unito, Olanda, Austria Ungheria, Spagna etc.

I desperately wanted an incredible picture of Cristina Scabbia but I just wasn’t on my a-game during their set. I also found that it’s tougher to photograph a female rocker. Most of my techniques for their male counterparts look rather unflattering on a woman. This is something I will have to work on. Up to this point, the only female rocker I have successfully shot is Jeanne Sagan (All That Remains) at the Mayhem Festival.

Valamikor 2001 nyarán (július? augusztus?) készült a lemez.

Lacuna Coil pulled into Atlanta on November 7th as part of the HARDDRIVE RADIO tour and I was lucky enough to see them twice in one day. They played an amazing acoustic set at Criminal Records in Little 5 Points to a very appreciative audience earlier in the day and it was an awesome way to give the fans something different and fun. They did a short but sweet four song set that was closed out with a gorgeous acoustic version of “Shallow Life” which was the first time they had ever performed this song live. It was such a treat to be hearing this for the first time ever. I loved that they really did great acoustic renditions of their songs. It wasn’t just the songs played normally with acoustic guitars. I could really tell that they put some effort and thought into the translation of the songs to acoustic and it made for a really pleasurable listening experience.

The band was in amazing spirits and they were so appreciative of the support and made their way out to meet and greet the fans. I had a great time meeting the band. Cristina was an absolute doll and really a cool person to talk to. I also really enjoyed talking to their singer Andi and guitarist Pizza about acoustic music and life on the road. They were super cool and without a doubt the nicest band I have ever met. To this point I had decided that I wasn’t going to the show that night at the Masquerade since they were only playing 40 minutes as an opening act but they were so awesome I just had to see them in all their glory and besides, my wife pretty much made me go!

I got to the Masquerade around 8pm and the energy in that place was just amazing. I forgot what a great place to see a metal show it was. The place was packed wall to wall and I think it would be safe to say that it looked like a sold out show. The house lights went down and the crowd went absolutely nuts. The band took the stage and once the opening notes of “Survive” kicked in the the crowd just lost it and started jumping and moshing. It was nice to see an audience so responsive to them. The band just fed off of the energy from the audience and continued to push it to the next level. One of the biggest things that stood out to me was the amazing dynamics between Andi and Cristina. They’ve always had a great dynamic together on stage both being lead vocalists but this was different. Andi seemed to exude a confidence I hadn’t seen before and his voice was super strong. In the past, in all honesty, I felt it sometimes painful to hear him as he didn’t always seem in key but he must have really worked hard on this because he was nailing it both on his solo spots and on the harmony parts with Cristina. It was truly something to see and hear!

It was a the 3rd song in the set, “Fragments of Faith” that things really took off. Andi and Cristina addressed the crowd and let them know that they had to be ready to give them all they had. The song kicked in and the entire audience was pumping fists in unison and pogo jumping. I could literally feel the floor of the venue bowing up and down as they jumped. The energy was so intense and you could totally see that as the audience got more intense, the band pushed right back with more. I felt like I was at a European festival as opposed to Atlanta, GA. This is Andi’s song without a doubt. This is the one where he takes everything he has and throws it directly into the eye of the storm. He puts so much into it that the audience completely fixates themselves right to him as Cristina steps back allowing Andi to truly own the stage. As the song progressed, Cristina and Andi stood at the edge of the stage almost as if they were summoning the crowd surfers to the front and as they made it to the front would high five them and send them back to where they came. This energy seemed to spread as more and more people began surfing to the front. This was something to be seen as the audience seemed to be completely connected and drawn to this band.

Cristina thanked the audience for all of the years of support and dedicated the next song to all the fans that had been there for them since day one. They launched into “Heaven’s A Lie” from the Comalies album which was met with a roar that was so loud that my ears pounded before the song even kicked in. They delivered it with such energy that even I found myself pumping my fist in the air with the audience and not looking back. The band did a fantastic job mixing old and new material in a way that the set had a flow to it. It’s hard to make 40 minutes work when you’ve got as extensive of a catalog as Lacuna Coil has but they made it work without a doubt. They made the most of their 40 minutes and showed that audience just what they’re capable of.

Closing the set out with “Our Truth” was truly unfortunate. Unfortunate for the band that had to follow them! The audience went apeshit and jumped up and down in unison like it was Castle Donnington or something and just gave the band everything they had. In turn, Lacuna Coil gave the audience every last bit of energy they had. You could totally see it in the bands faces that they could’ve gone on for easily another hour. They were drenched in sweat they looked like they were having the time of their lives.

Lacuna Coil did in 40 minutes what many bands cannot do and haven’t done in two hours on the stage. They went out there with their most solid material and hungry hearts and gave that audience all they had. In return, they got back 100% from the audience. Even performing without their bass player (who was sent home with an arm injury of some sorts) should’ve been an impossible feat but they modified it and pulled it off and made the most of that show. It’s always exciting when a band you love exceeds your expectations. I had seen Lacuna Coil once before and trust me , they were great but this time, they were amazing. The energy on stage, the strength of their set list, the confidence and the appreciation and humbleness that they convey all at once was amazing to take in. As the house lights came back on I just stood there with my mouth open at what I had just witnessed. I just nodded my head with a smile and exited the club pretty much forgetting that there was even another band performing after them.

Lacuna Coil solidified themselves to me this night as force to be reckoned with. They are not some nu-metal band that has worn out their welcome or that has lost steam over the years. On this night, Lacuna Coil solidified themselves to me as true Metal force to be reckoned with. I am excited for their future and for my future as a fan of this band.

Taking Dawn

Formerly known as 7th Son, Taking Dawn has recently signed to Roadrunner Records. Inspired by 80’s metal the band proclaims that they are in no way a “throwback to 80’s glam metal,” but include new solos, melodic rhythms and shredding in their songs. The track that attacked Roaderunner to them that you should keep your ears open for? Time To Burn.

Lacuna Coil

From Swords To Sunrise

Formed in late 2007 From Sword To Sunrise spawned from hardcore foundations on the music scene in Spokane, Washington. In 2008 the band headed out on more extensive tours with All That Remains and Trivium and when they finished they started recording their debut full length album FSTS. The band is discribed as, “Hard hitting and explosive, combined with influences of mayhem and destruction,” by a local writter.
Seth Wolther, Vocalist, thanked Hard Drive for, “have given us a real shot here.” Take your opportunity to see what you think of them at Hard Drive Live 2009.

Maylene and The Sons of Disaster

Get ready for the gun toating outlaws to make their way to a stage in a town near you on the Hard Drive Live Tour 2009.  Straight out of Birmingham, Alabama Maylene and The Sons of Disaster are considered, “musical outlaws who rob and steal the best parts of heavy metal, punk rock, down-home classic rock n’ roll and bluegrass and reshape it in their own image with the true-life morality.” The bands third album, With Beautiful Simplicity, III, pushed the envelope even further in which they broadened the scope of the repertoire established in their depute and album II. Recognize the vocalist? You might. Dallas Taylor was the original vocalist of UnderOATH who was “asked to leave” the band in 2003.
