Alumunium Ladder

I’m running on empty today.  It’s been a long week, with the parade in the middle.  (I forgot to mention it earlier, but we had to wait 2+ hours to start moving on the parade, with 50 kids from Cub Scout troop 359.  They were good as gold the entire time.  Amazing) Today I’ve got a cub scout skating party.  I’m not really sure I’m up for it.

Now yesterday, I must share, that I had one of the most interesting things happen.  My friend Russell needed help getting a tree limb down.  Of course, not just any tree limb but a broken one that was about the size of a tree itself.

After a few failed methods, we finally got a working one.  Which ultimately involved pulling it down with a rope.  When it game down from about 35 feet above us, it landed big end first and implanted itself into the ground.  Boom.  It was a pretty amazing site.  It was like we’d just planted a tree.

Only, this tree didn’t stay planted.  The weight quickly snapped the part underground, and ever so slowly the new tree, which was itself over two stories tall, slowly tumbled over.

Right at us.

Before slamming into Russell’s deck.  Which, I may have mentioned, was RIGHT AT US.

It missed me by a hair’s length.  Literally.  The branch brushed the hairs on my arm as it fell and we jumped out of the way.  It smashed up the stairs on deck pretty good.  But the limb is down.

It was exciting.  And at times a little crazy.  I’ll not talk about the running chain saw on the end of a 30 foot rope.  Oops, I just did. Sorry Laurel.

About 21 million Americans suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia, the fear of Friday the 13th, or Black Friday.

They avoid daily activities that could potentially put them in harm’s way and some are too afraid to get out of bed in the morning.

But why? Where did the superstition come from?

One theory suggests 12 is the most complete number. It occurs in common cultural references – 12 months in a year, signs of the Zodiac, labors of Hercules, tribes of Israel, gods of Olympus and apostles of Jesus Christ. Thus, 13 is considered irregular.

Friday has been considered unlucky, and therefore a bad day to start a new journey or project – stemming from the Canterbury Tales. Also, according to Christian scripture, Jesus was crucified on a Friday.

In the 13th century, the Knights Templar were arrested by King Philip in France on Friday the 13th.

Another belief comes from Norse mythology, in which Frigga, the goddess of love, was banished to a mountaintop and labeled a witch. Every Friday, Frigga would call 11 other witches to the top of the mountain to plot evils for those below. The 12 witches would gather with a 13th guest – the devil. Similarly, in Roman times, witches are said to have gathered in groups of 12 with the 13th member being the devil.

Another part of Norse mythology states 12 gods were gathered at dinner in heaven – Valhalla – when an uninvited 13th guest, the god of darkness, shot Balder, the god of joy and gladness. When Balder died, the world went dark, and from that moment 13 was considered ominous.

There is no written evidence of a “Friday the 13th” superstition before the 19th century. The first written reference was in 1869 in the biography of Italian composer Gioachino Rossini. Generally, Italians separately regard Friday and 13 to be unlucky, but on Friday the 13th, Rossini died.

But do terrible events really occur on Black Fridays?

Several natural disasters have occurred on this day, including Hurricane Charley in 2004, the unexpected snow storm in Buffalo in 2006, the Andes flight disaster of 1972 and a large-scale ship disappearance in 1773.

The arrest of Al Capone occurred on a Black Friday, as did the death of Tupac Shakur. Friday the 13th has also been associated with the stock market crashes, and Henry Ford would never do business on Friday the 13th.

Friday the 13th occurs at least once a year but no more than three times – the next one is not until August 2010.

Statisticians have researched the day’s events, and it has been proven that car accidents increase 60 percent every Black Friday. However, studies have also shown that, due to alcohol, every Friday generally has an increased number of crimes, murders and accidents on the road.

Oddly enough, studies have shown that crime and accidents somewhat decrease on Friday the 13th because people are alert.

Cambridge University physiologist Richard Wiseman has theorized that people who consider themselves to be unlucky are more likely to believe in superstitions like Friday the 13th.

More than 80 percent of highrises do not have a 13th floor. Many hotels and hospitals will not have a room 13, and in Florence, Italy, the house number between 12 and 14 is 12 1/2.

In some places in America, Friday the 13th Clubs were formed, in which the members only gather on Black Friday and decided to defy society’s views by smashing mirrors, scattering salt, opening umbrellas inside and letting black cats out.

Friday the 13th is today. Stay in or go out, but realize those with superstitions may be the unlucky few.

Miss Germanotta is skyrocketing to my television screen in less than a week. I can barely contain my excitement. On Monday’s Gossip Girl, appropriately titled “The Last Days of Disco Stick,” Gaga will be strutting her stuff as herself, performing her latest single “Bad Romance” in a dress featuring a 35-foot long train (and yes, there will be ladders). Her performance will play into the sequence of events from the November 9th episode in which Dan (Penn Badgley), Vanessa (Jessica Szohr), and Olivia (Hilary Duff)well… you know.

Rumor has it Gaga will take a trip to her alma mater as Blair attempts to gain popularity by presenting Gaga–known as Stefani Germanotta during her NYU years–to the theater kids, an event even Leighton Meester can only describe as a “cabaret” of sorts.

The NYC native is thrilled to bring a hint of burlesque to Gossip Girl.  ”I really sat down with the writers,” she said. “I was like, ‘Look, I want to do this, and the reason I want to do this is because I am trying to say something that is not mainstream in a mainstream capacity. I can’t wait to see Lady Fame climbing all over ladders, belting lyrics, and dancing suggestively on stage with gorgeous men. Until then I’ll keep replaying this clip from the upcoming episode.  Really, the suspense is killing me.  Oh, Lady Fame.  What would we do without you? This girl truly is a fame monster.

Este lunes pasado obtuvimos una ajustada victoria sobre -MisS-, fue un partido duro que casi se nos escapa de las manos por no escuchar consejos mientras estamos jugando.

Gracias a Kira que tuvo que ser sustituido, a MelkahiA que jugó con ping, a Neo que nos hizo el aguante, a phisics -Tano gay que se pelea con todos- y a Thekill que reemplazo a Kira jugando un poco mejor que él (?).

Hasta aca todo lindo pero como nombra el titulo hay malas noticias y esta es que a pesar de obtener el triunfo bajamos un puesto y al único que podíamos desafiar fue al =El Ej3= que ahora esta octavo, para el colmo las cosas se complican mas ya que la clasificación no depende de nosotros, -MisS- desafío a r4ge y en caso de que -MisS- gane bajaremos un puesto más. Ojala nos salgan las cosas a favor.

No me quiero olvidar de felicitar a -MisS- que puso todo y casi hace que se disuelva nuestro team de tantas puteadas que había en el TeamSpeak.

Actualización: El =El Ej3= no respondió al desafío por lo que volvimos a tomar el octavo puesto, ahora a esperar para desafiar a algún team que se encuentre mejor posicionado ya que la Ladder termina el 17 de este mes.

Volvemos a la competitividad luego de pasar algún que otro percance obteniendo en esta semana el puesto numero ocho en la Ladder Codtime, dicho puesto nos estaría calificando al Torneo Super 8.

Si bien esto es una buena noticia este lunes deberemos defender lo obtenido ya que -MisS- nos desafió y va a poner todo para intentar obtener un buen resultado.

I am not sure exactly when this event occurred last year.  Certainly it was a while after Abigail had died.

Just before Abigail had died a friend had returned the baby car seat we had leant her a year or so before.  In the hope of course that we would need it.  It was still in the boot of our car a week or so after Abigail had died and we bought it into the house.  It stayed in the house for a while until my wife decided to put it in the attic.  She got out the ladder and went to climb up.  For some reason I called out by reflex, “let me do that you are pregnant!”

What a crazy thing to say – I hadn’t forgotten that Abigail had died and been born!  It was just that I had spent 33 weeks making sure my wife did nothing to endanger the baby (that is what Dad’s to be do!).  And that just carried on – my wife couldn’t go up the ladder…

… of course she could, it made no difference now.  Sad

Of course the crazy thing is now it is still up there along with the baby toys, baby clothes etc.  Unless we go for adoption we are going to have to get them all down sometime and give them away.  No rainbow baby for Livingintherainbow.
