There I am, waiting for the bus to pick me up and bring me to  class. I arrived early so I wouldn’t miss it. When the bus finally arrived I felt that I deserved to get on first, because I’ve been waiting in the cold the longest. But than this lady cut in line and quickly found a seat in the back where she didn’t had to sit next to a stranger.  So I followed her and decided to sit next to her, just to make things uncomfortable between us.

The whole ride the woman didn’t even look at me,  just staring at her shoes. I noticed how other people walked in the bus and tried to find a single seat and if that wasn’t available, they even preferred to stand through the whole ride. This got me thinking. I felt the urgent need to mess things up.

When I got on the train,  every four-person booth was occupied by one single person.  So I sat down next to someone, not opposite, not diagonally but directly next to him. This made him so uncomfortable that he actually got up and left the booth before the train even left the station.  Just because I violated the Law of Personal Space. I felt great and continued in doing so for an entire month. People reacted in many different ways and I was happier than a dwarf among midgets.

Near the end of April, I was almost done with changing the world. But the last time I did it, completely changed my life. I saw this beautiful drop dead gorgeous lady in red sitting there. I sat down next to her and we got to talking. Now I know what you’re thinking; you think I met “the one” and ran off and married her. Well it turned out differently. Turns out the woman had lice…which were now partying on my head. I had to shave of all of my hair, leaving me completely bold and awesomeless.  Marking day one of my depression.

Il est dit que la Princesse Diana l’aurait remercié pour avoir écrit une si belle chanson en son honneur car il est de notoriété publique que la couleur préférée de la Princesse est le rouge, mais il est plus vraisemblable que Chris De Burgh ait écrit cette mélodie en souvenir de sa première épouse Diane.
Sur la série TV britannique *This Is Your Life*, de Burgh a dit que la chanson lui avait été inspirée par le souvenir de la première fois qu’il a vu Diane, son épouse.

C’est un point commun qu’il a avec moi, car je me souviens précisément de ce que ma femme portait lors de notre première rencontre.:)

I’d like to take a minute of your time to fascinate you with my tale of karaoke, country music, and bikers.  It all happened one fateful Wednesday night, when I and several of my co-workers met up at a very interesting country restaurant at the heart of the Northland.  It was a typical grill and bar, much like 54th Street Bar and Grill, only instead of pictures of 50’s celebrities adorning the walls, it was mostly an unholy shrine to Dale, Jr.  We entered with the intention of performing mediocre karaoke.

Before I continue with the story, let me give you a little history of karaoke.  Webster’s dictionary defines karaoke as, “singing to music, from the Japanese word for ‘publicly humiliating one’s self’”.  I am personally a karaoke enthusiast, but it’s hard to find a place that does karaoke without it being in some seedy bar hopping with lowlifes and malcontents.  This was not such a place, and I was happy to have found it through a friend’s recommendation. The Japanese have a long, proud history of overworked businessmen singing Michael Jackson songs well out of key while consuming liver-damaging amount of alcoholic beverages.

Well, we did neither.  I had practiced literally all day to sing my ballad, Elton John’s “Rocket Man”.  I had all the timing down pat, and was ready to impress whatever crowd may be inside.  That is, until I walked in to see a table of patrons who just happened to be enormous biker-types.  Nothing makes you re-think singing Elton John like 300-pound bikers staring you down from across the room.  Everything inside me said “run away”, but four co-workers restraining me from bolting out of the building said “stay here”.  I killed about 30 minutes making careful song choices, hoping the bikers would simply go away.

Finally, they did, and I could breathe deeply again (because no one was holding me down any more) without the threat of being beaten to death with a tire iron by bikers.  The remaining crowd was people who were just plain “country”.  Some were classy, like Tiny (which is a misnomer, because he was 6′4″ and 300 pounds), who had a voice like an angel, if Tim McGraw were an angel.  There were also those who you could tell had spent many years in seedy bars, but did not have the strength any more to exist in such an establishment.  They had given up on trying to impress equally “country” suitors, and have settled into a quiet routine of entertaining themselves at karaoke night in a country-style grill.  These are what most theologians and historians call “regulars”.  We’ll see some of these folks in the video you’ll be watching momentarily.  Oh, the stories I could tell you about a woman named Sue, who must be around 60 years old, still wears belly shirts, and has a navel ring.  Sadly, you will not see her in the video, because the very sight of her would cause your medulla oblongata to melt, slide down your spine, and form a gelatinous pool in the soles of your feet.

I apologize in advance for the poor quality of singing, and the low light environment of the karaoke area.  Most of all, I apologize for the clip in which country music is sang.  I am not responsible for the absence of meaningful lyrics found routinely in country music.  Try to keep small children, those with pacemakers, and any family pets away from the screen while watching this.

On This Date In History: In the late 1920’s and 1930’s, lots of gangsters roamed the countryside. Public Enemy Number One was determined by the Bureau of Investigations, which in 1935 became the FBI.   In 1934, the man who held the title was John Dillinger.  While it didn’t take him long to top the list, he had to learn his trade through trial and error like any good craftsman.   On June 10, 1933, Dillinger pulled his first bank job in Carlisle, IN.  Two weeks later, he tried again but this one   was botched in Monticello, Indiana.   It is interesting that there is very little information available regarding the attempted hold up of a Marshall Fields in Monticello by Dillinger and William Shaw.  I suppose its because it was a failed attempt and Americans only like to hear about wins, not losses.

McNutt had a bad feeling about Dillinger due to a harsh sentence

An interesting thing about Dillinger is that, even though he was Public Enemy Number 1, his career as a criminal didn’t really last all that long. He was put in jail in 1924 following the beating of Mooresville, IN grocer Frank Morgan by Dillinger and his good friend Edgar Singleton. They had been out boozing it up and jumped the guy. Dillinger got caught when, a few days after the assault on September 6, 1924, Dillinger brought attention to himself by inquiring as to the well being of Mr. Morgan. As it turns out, Morgan couldn’t identify his attackers, but Dillinger was tricked into confessing.  Meanwhile, his buddy Ed pled not guilty. Ed was out of jail after a couple of years while Dillinger got 10-20 years for assault and 2-14 years for conspiracy to commit a felony. Some scholars think that the difference in sentences is what pissed off Dillinger and led him on a life of crime.   Indiana Governor Paul McNutt thought that the sentence was so harsh that it might cause Dillinger to do anything once he was out of jail. Victim Morgan and the sentencing judge both thought that the sentence was pretty tough.  By 1933, the pair joined 182 townfolk lobbying to let Dillinger loose and on May 22, 1933 John Dillinger was set free.

That’s the odd part. He was set free on May 22 1933 and within a few weeks,  he was committing or at least trying to, commit worse crimes than he had done prior to his initial incarceration.  Did prison create John Dillinger?

 The fact that Dillinger failed in Monticello, IN  was probably more associated with his lack of experience than anything else, but one can’t  know for sure. Even Monticello doesn’t want to talk about it. In any event,   Dillinger went on to amass some $359, 322 in loot taken and that made him the marked man at the top of the list.

Dillinger Death Made Headlines Nationwide

On This Date in 1934, the Bureau got their man when it gunned down Public Enemy Number 1,  John Dillinger. Bureau agent Melvin Purvis  got a tip from brothel operator Anna Sage who gave information concerning Dillinger’s whereabouts under the threat of deportation to her native Romania on morals charges. Sage is the original woman in red, which has been also called the lady in red. The story is that she attended the Biograph Theatre in Chicago and when she emerged, she was identified from her red dress and thus the man whom she was with was to be considered Dillinger. She came out and the agents promptly shot her date. That was that, the headlines were trumpeted across the nation and the photo above was circulated to prove that Dillinger was indeed dead.

But….a supposed authority on the history of American Crime, Jay Robert Nash, says the FBI got the wrong guy. Nash says the man who was killed outside of the theatre was really a patsy. James Lawrence was considered a low level thug who was used by Sage and a crooked Indiana detective to unwittingly stand in for Dillinger. If you notice, the dead guy looks similar to the Dillinger photo on the left, but to me he looks a bit more like Jackie Gleason than the lean looking photo of the alive version of Public Enemy Number 1. The FBI claimed that Dillinger had plastic surgery and that explains any discrepancies. But the Cook County autopsy report was supposedly lost for 30 years. After it was found, the claim is that the dead guy is not the same height or weight of Dillinger. Dillinger had blue eyes whereas the corpse had brown eyes. The corpse was missing a distinguishing birthmark and had more teeth than the notorious bank-robber. Evidence showed the dead guy had a rheumatic heart. Had Dillinger had such a condition, he would have been prevented from being in the Navy.

The FBI, of course, stands by their story and claims the record, including fingerprints, support the truth that the G-Man got his man!!! I dunno…but I do know that Dillinger was never spotted again. Seems to me that if he were alive, it would be unlikely that he “went straight.” But then again, the guy was dead, they couldn’t interrogate him to determine if he was in fact Dillinger and they certainly couldn’t read him his Miranda rights. Back in those days it was “shoot first and ask questions later”….kinda like that good neighbor in Texas. Anyway, if you see a very old man that looks like the alive version of Dillinger, call the authorities immediately.

Weather Bottom Line:  Storm system will slowly plod, basically up the Ohio River Valley all day.  Severe threat is not great but look for rain and much cooler than average temps…like maybe low 70’s…all day with a chance of rain and t’storms.   Thursday and Friday look good.If you’re looking for something on Invest 97L, I’ll have that later.  We’ve got plenty of time, if we need it.

Where is the “Lady in Red”?

Remember, she is the dame who snitched on Johnny Dillinger and was responsible for his being gunned down in front of Chicago’s famous Biograph Theater, in 1934. Dillinger at the time was “Public Enemy Number One”, and was popular with the masses for robbing banks and having a good time doing so.

All good things had to come to an end, though, and nobody should have that much fun thieving.

Along the way of robbing banks and showing off his athletic prowess ( he liked to jump up on bank counters while making his unorthodox withdrawls), Johnny D was so named a “Public Enemy” by J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI.

Few know that the original term “public enemy” was first used in Chicago by the Chicago Crime Commission of the 1930’s. the first Gangster Era in Chicago. Yes, the dean of Crime in Chicago, Al Capone, make the list as well. It was used to disparage many of Chicago’s best numbers men, pimps and hooch providers. Or so it was thought by Frank J. Loesch, head of the Chicago Crime Commission.

Chicago folks — they knew better. They knew the real public enemies.

The real thieves of society were the corrupt, money grubbing and power hungry politicians and their lietuents, equally corrupt police, public officials and assorted business men.

Because we are smarter today, and getting smarter each and every day under President Obama’s administration, we can create our own “Public Enemies” list. Like our grandparents, we know who really belongs on that list. Being from Chicago, we especially know who is on the list.

Let’s play Hoover for the moment, minus the supposed ladies underwear.

The public enemies all have a Chicago connection.

Let’s start with Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s Chief of Staff. His official White House Biography skips over his involvement in the Freddie Mac fraud, which, in part, has led to the current housing crisis. Emanuel managed to be quite handsomely paid for his hand in getting the financial giant in trouble and also for turning it into a political ATM for Democrats.

Emanuel is ever the opportunist. He is now famous for saying that a serious crisis should never go to waste, meaning that the opportunity for further graft and control are limitless while the public — the enemy– is confused.

Emanuel might be listed as “Public Enemy” Number Two.

He might be, that is, if it weren’t for the moll behind the scenes, Michelle Obama.

In another, less enlightened time, Michelle Obama might not have gotten her due as a power behind the Official Seal. This, however, is the twenty-first century, not the 1930’s. She is a fully Bonnie to Barack’s Clyde. She can handle her weapons and her man. Does anybody think that the pillow talk each night is about the kid’s homework? Michelle grabs a hold of one of those ample ears and whispers sweet but stearn instructions. She wants to right wrongs and be proud once and for all about this country, even if she destroys it to make it happen.

It is no surprise, then, that Public Enemy Number One is …. The Teleprompter of the United States — TOTUS.

You were expecting maybe President Barack Obama to be the head Enemy?

No, he is just the smooth and polished muscle.

Sure, he has his own ideas, most of them destined to change the United States into a version of Soviet-light, but he is just delivering the message that everyday appears magically on the Official Teleprompter.

His message is about control and spending. His controlling and his spending.

When Dillinger was gunned down by the FBI that July day in 1934, he was leaving the Biograph Theater with his wife and with his prostitute mistress, the infamous “Lady in Red”.

Ana Cumpanas was the “Lady in Red”. She went along for the ride with Dillinger and no doubt had some giddy good times, spending the money that the mobster took from the banks. Reality caught up with Ana, a Romanian immigrant facing deportation, and she wanted to go legit and make a nice home for herself in the US. So she snitched and soon Johnny D was wearing a plaster death mask. For her effort she got nothing. She was eventually deported.

Too little too late, maybe.

Today the “Lady in Red” is the defecit and national debt, and it growing faster than the number of appointed czars in the White House (not an easy feat).

Soon our own Lady in Red is going to snitch by forcing our national hand. The stake out is on. Our children and grandchildren are hiding at home and waiting for the outcome. Will they loose their savings and birthright because the Bank of The United States is being looted? Will they loose even the ability to go to the doctor of their choosing and have to use a mob doctor? Or even buy an automobile to their liking that has more horsepower than a golf cart, sold by a government connected car dealer.

It’s not likely right now that anybody will be able to ambush the Teleprompter and pull the plug. Public Enemy Number One is having its say.
