my mum didn’t get me the fame monster… sad times. so no review today. new moon review tomorrow though.

yay!

im sooooo addicted to Ugly Betty now its unreal. I need to stop watching american tv before I run out… actually, I say before I run out, but im pretty much out of them now anywho…

so i got some good news earlier. Im getting my allowence doubled after christmas… so exited. the posibilites are endless! means i can shop MOREEEEE! and still use dads amazon account. yay. i hope thats part of my inheritence… dads amazon account. its not like anyone elses uses it more than me. IVE EARNED IT!

its kinda worrying me how close me and my dear, dear mother are at the moment. it seems like its been forever since we argued. we’re even planning to get out the ps1 and play through all the old tomb raiders together. im actually sooooo exited. but realy scared. we’re due an argument. and its been so long. their will probably be murder…

wow it reminds me of the daysss…. i remember when my mum got her first pc and i was like… i dont know… four., and I used to sit with my mum and play tomb raider. yeah, that probably makes her the worst parent of all time! but i disagree. i think it made me the person I am today, and it probably one of my clearest happy memories… and then tomb raider two was around the time my dad came out of hospital, so thats more happy memories.

Im glad my mum was such a bad parents. it technically, in my eyes, made her the best parent EVER! thanks mum! much appreciated!

I get so annoyed with political correctness and protecting children from the horrors that can be found in fairytales. who cares if the big bad wolf is terrifying, and who cares if its baa baa black sheep. does it make it any less offensive its its baa baa rainbow sheep? isnt that just plain in your face homaphobia? or maybe its encouraging kids to be gay?

kids arn’t stupid. they know whats right and whats wrong. if its so wrong to expose children to fairytales, then why on earth do we think its fine to expose them to the monster we call The Night Garden. now, im not being funny, but the things in that absolutely terrify me! id rather be locked in a room with a clown than in a room with them.

And tellytubbies. im sorry, but that was just plane WRONG! how DARE they allow names such as Tinky Winky (little penis) Dipsy (stupid blonde girl) lala (CRAZYYYYY BITCH) Po (Shit) on the screens. for fucks sake they didnt even speak english… hell, they didnt speak. period.

I dont think that me reading stories like Little Red Riding Hood or Enid Blyton’s The Magical Far Away Tree ever effected me. wait. no. take it back. bible bashers will blatently blame my exposure to these sins as the reason for my homosexuality. OH FORGIVE ME FATHER for being ME!

I don’t care. if they’re whats made me such a sin, then fine, I’m glad. I’m happy and proud to be the person I am, and I wouldnt want it any other way!

If anything I think its a sin that the people who are banning and changing these fairytales and other classics are the people who were never exposed to them in the first place. they seriously DON’T know what theyre missing. losers.

its not our fault they were born to competent parents. forgive us for our parents failiure. its not our fault they didnt know the demons hiding behind the pages of Fairytales and the words of Nursary Rhymes. they didnt know the poison Roald Dahl or Enid Blyton wrote.

shame on them!

Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to add helmets to the Atelier Ruby 2009 fall collection. The helmets range in fabric anywhere from tweed to mink fur. There very exclusively on sale at Colette in Paris, considering there’s only been twelve made. I wonder who’s going to be the first to snag a helmet? I can see Lady Gaga sporting one for sure. They come complete with a pocket for your iPod, because who wouldn’t want to listen to music while cruising on their scooters? Especially when you can’t see the iPod. But hey, why not?

Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford will compete on the show in a special two hour “super chef battle.” Comerford’s teammate is grill master Bobby Flay, who guest-cheffed at the White House for the Father’s Day event in June, when he cooked up some lovely steaks with President Obama. Spoiler alert: Mrs. Obama will be revealing the “secret ingredient” that the chefs will use in their televised cook-off, which is a hallmark of the Iron Chef America series. The “secret ingredient” in this case is anything that grows in the White House Kitchen Garden, which leaves things wiiiide open, because the Kitchen Garden has produced a stunning variety of crops this year. Comerford and Flay are competing against the highly competitive team of celeb chefs Emeril Lagasse, who specializes in Southern/New Orleans cooking, and Mario Batali, an Italian cooking superstar.

Comerford in the Kitchen Garden during the Iron Chef America filming, harvesting with teammate Flay

Scenes for the show were already shot at the White House, with Comerford and the three other chefs harvesting crops from the Kitchen Garden, and Mrs. Obama having face-time with the guest chefs and discussing the importance of getting kids to eat their veggies. In her onscreen cameo, Mrs. Obama will discuss her campaign to reduce childhood obesity through better school lunches, community gardens, farmers’ markets and exercise, which is now known as the Healthy Kids Initiative around the White House. The show’s January air-date is timed perfectly to be right before Congress comes back into session, when legislators will ostensibly be addressing the re-authorization of the Child Nutrition Act, which provides federal funding for school feeding programs. Better school lunches are one of Mrs. Obama’s priorities, and President Obama’s too; Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack frequently notes in his public remarks that this was the very first subject President Obama discussed with him during their “job interview.”

I came; I wrote; I WON!

THIS. IS. NANO!

Let the celebrations begin! All of the hard work devoted to my ROUGH draft has paid off, my friends. And boy, do I feel GREAT!

WORD COUNT: 50,404

PERCENT OF SANITY LOST: 84.7%

RELIEF INDEX: 42

TOTAL COFFEE CUPS CONSUMED: 1

TOTAL RANDOM OUTBURSTS AT FAMILY MEMBERS: 11

MISSED SHOWERS: 3

HEADACHES: 4

SICKNESSES: 1

DAYS OFF: 2

FOOTBALL GAMES WATCHED: 2

NEAR-QUITS: 5

TEMPER TANTRUMS: 1

DAYS OF SCHOOL MISSED: 1

TOTAL HOMEWORKS MISSED: 0

Damn, I’m good. Though slightly less sane for it. So what if I have to spend the rest of my life in a padded room? I don’t care. I wrote half of a novel.

That’s right. 50,404 words in, and I’m only halfway done with my actual plot. The question now is: can I stay committed? Frankly I believe I must, with that CreateSpace offer waiting to be redeemed. I can’t miss the opportunity to get a copy of my very own novel.

Heck, maybe I’ll get lucky and actually publish it professionally. That would be awesome, but is it realistic? Maybe, maybe, maybe.

This month is full of maybes.

Thankfully, the one definite YES I can give you is if you ask: Did you win?

YES.

And I am freaking proud of it. It’s difficult managing to write 50,000 words in November. It’s a hectic month with the holiday and all the projects I got assigned with Thanksgiving themes (Sooo elementary, btw…) Regardless, I am pretty darn excited. It was hard, don’t get me wrong, but I accomplished it. Oh, yes. I accomplished it.

The pressure to win this month was maddening; I kept wanting to rip my own hair out. Maintaining my plot line and not killing off my characters proved to be more difficult than I ever expected. But I love all of them, even though I make horrible threats and brandish weapons when I need to assert my authority. Luckily, they continued to cooperate despite my wickedness.

It’s over. I’m elated. I’m sort of sad. But April is Script Frenzy, writing a 100-page script in one month. Now THAT might just be interesting…not to mention a good distraction while I await NaNo 2010.

Above all things, I promise to keep you updated.

Even though like three people read this. Sometimes.

Next blood drive: Dec. 4th. Ohh yeah.

With the economy in the tank, it’s more important than ever to tighten our belts and get our finances under control. The most effective tool to do this is the lowly budget. I’ve had an on again, off again thing with budgets. But when I’ve used them, my financial situation always improved. Of course, what ends up happening is that I get lazy, stop making time to review my budget, and fall back into just sort of winging it with my finances. While I don’t start spending like a high roller, I’ve noticed that when I’m not following a budget, my financial situation stagnates and doesn’t improve. And as women, especially as women taking this 30 Day challenge, we’re all about continual improvement. So today we’ll be creating a budget. Let’s go.

The Benefits of Having a Budget

Puts you in control. A woman is always in control. She’s in charge. But when you don’t have a budget, your money controls you, instead of the other way around. You want to be the one with a plan, not the woman floating along with her head in the clouds.

Reduces stress. If you don’t keep a budget, you’re inevitably going to run into a situation where you don’t have a clue about how much money you have in your account, and you’ll end up incurring some sort of overdraft charge. Not knowing how much money you have at your disposal can create a lot of unneeded stress. You don’t know if you’re check is going to bounce; you don’t know if you’re going to have enough money for the month’s rent; you don’t know how you’ll pay for an emergency if it arises. By having a budget, you can know exactly what’s going in and out and focus on more important things in your life.

Increases confidence. There’s something about knowing exactly where your money is going that increases your confidence. I think it has something to do with the feeling of control a budget gives you. Plus, having a budget can help you make decisions faster and more confidently. Instead of hemming and hawing over every single purchase you make, you can just look at your budget, see if you have money available for it, and make your decision.

How to Create a Budget

1) Assess your monthly income. Gather your pay stubs together and figure out exactly how much you’re bringing in each month. If you’re self-employed or do work on the side, make a close estimate of how much you earn a month. You need to know how much money you have to work with before you start budgeting it out.

2) List your fixed expenses. Fixed expenses are those that stay about the same each month. There’s usually not much you can do to change the amount you pay on fixed expenses. Fixed expenses can include things like rent or mortgage payments, car insurance, car payments, and health insurance.

3) Subtract your total fixed expenses from your total monthly income. The amount that’s left over is what you can work with for your variable expenses. If your fixed expenses are more than your total monthly income, you’re in trouble. You may need to downgrade to a smaller house or perhaps sell your car and get an old beater so that you have money left over for things like food, gas, and savings.

4) Set a spending goal for variable expenses. Now that you know how much money you have to work with, you can start budgeting for your variable expenses. Variable expenses are those that fluctuate from month-to-month. You have a degree of control over variable expenses. These are the areas where you can cut back the most and start getting ahead in your finances. Variable expenses include items like groceries, gasoline, eating out, and entertainment. Set a reasonable spending goal for each variable expense.
The two most important variable expenses, and the ones that you should budget for before you budget any others, are a retirement and emergency fund. Let’s face it, when it comes to retirement, we can no longer depend on our jobs or the government to fund it. So it’s up to us to do it. Set aside a small amount each month that you can put into a Roth IRA or your 401K.
In addition to saving for retirement, budget some money each month for an emergency fund. This money is to be used only in, well, emergencies, like unexpected unemployment or car repairs. Even if you can only sock away $25 a month in the beginning, it’s better than nothing. Most financial experts agree that you should save enough for three to six months of living expenses. If you’re looking for a good place to stash your emergency fund, check out ING Direct. It’s an online bank and they have decent interest rates. It’s what I use.
In addition to a retirement account and an emergency fund, you may also want to budget for what I call a “freedom account.” I put a monthly sum into the account to pay for expenses that come up regularly during the year. This includes a yearly vacation, oil changes, weddings gifts, Christmas presents, dentist and doctor appointments, etc.

4) Subtract your total expenses (fixed and variable) from your monthly income. The goal is for your expenses to be less than your income. If they’re not, you’ll need to tweak it some so that they are. This may mean cutting back or cutting out things like going out to eat or cable television. If you have any surplus, put it into your emergency fund or towards your retirement.

5) Keep track of spending. After you’ve created the budget for the month, keep track of every single penny you spend to ensure that you stay within your budget. Keeping track of your spending will also come in handy when you make next month’s budget. You’ll be able to review how much you spent the previous month and adjust your budget accordingly. One of the best ways I’ve found to keep track of your expenses is Mint.com. You can connect your bank account to Mint, and each week you’ll get a report telling you how much you’ve spent on groceries, gasoline, etc. It can be very helpful and eye-opening to see your expenses broken down into a color pie chart; you may be surprised about what portion of your money is going to things like eating out.
One of the best old-school methods of keeping track of your budget is to put the money you budgeted for certain things like groceries into envelopes. You only use the money in the envelope when making purchases for that thing. When the money runs out, you’re done spending in that category for the month.

6) Review your budget every month. Each month, go over last month’s budget to see how you did. You’ll be able to see where you did well and where you can improve. After you review, repeat the whole process and make next month’s budget.

                                                                                          By K.K.Subramanian

Waterfriend remembers his childhood

Kunnathur Mana

My mother was born in a very illustrious family Kunnathur Padinjaredath. You can see the ancestral house near the Peruvanam temple south gopuram (gate)

I have vague memories of sitting upstairs; looking at the road. I must be four at that time.

The family came there in search of livelihood and became the tantry (main priest-they still are) of the temple. I can imagine mother (kali was her name-a goddess) walking towards the temple, holding the hands of the maid servant, almost naked, with only a plantain leaf strip to cover nakedness, not knowing what fate awaited her…tears swell in my eyes, even as I write these lines

She was married off at the tender age of thirteen or so to Subrahmanian Nambudiripad, aged forty plus, already having two wives, one living and the next one and her son still fresh in memory, and a daughter of mother’s age whom her brother married the same day, probably. Mother was dark, uncouth and short; my step sister was fair, lean and very handsome whom mother hated heartily!

I do not remember any one caring for her, except her younger sister and some cousins. Uncle (eldest) never talked to her or even to her children (in all six, two died early). She had a sharp tongue and was outspoken but had a heart of gold. She was very lazy and father was the laziest!

I digressed…

Around 150 years ago, mother’s ancestor was married to the sister of the king of erstwhile Cochin State who was known as Shaktan Thampuran. He bestowed on the Kunnathur family tax free land. The family became rich.

Maternal grandfather was very intelligent, so too was my uncle. At that time a rich local Nambudiri of Chittoor mana established a school, where we all studied, and uncle was the first student, duly initiated before a lighted lamp etc. Of course the student was without a shirt! I had a few classmates, topless, in primary school. Grandmother was wise, cultured and well versed in puranas (old legends of Hindu religion). When she got angry and shouted like a lioness, her husband shivered like a mouse! She did like my mother, always told me to look after her well but did nothing when she needed assistance. In fact no one accompanied her when she left the house built by father, and we were travelling in a country boat, through the swollen river. Being a fool, I enjoyed the trip!…

Earliest memories centre around a small village Thalore, near Trichur. I was about four. Mother had given birth to a dead baby and so she continued to feed me. I just came in from the spacious orchard where I was playing, lay down in my mother’s lap and started sucking her big breast. (In those days our women folk did not wear blouse.) “Ma, who put sugar in your milk?” -I asked. She just pushed me off and that was the end breast feeding !

I had a playmate Bhagi about eight years or so . She was attached to our maid servant Madhavi. I always thought she was her daughter.

One day the girl was mopping the kitchen floor. I said something .She didn’t listen and I gave a blow on her back with an iron ladle. The poor girl cried out aloud inviting the attention of mother and paternal grand mother I felt guilty and wretched. Perhaps that was the only time I used violence against any living creature…..

With just a piece of cloth tied like lady’s bikini, I used to accompany Madhavi to the grocery shop owned by a Tamil Brahmin .He would give a piece of jaggery. We never got chocolates in those days.

Father and mother slept in the upstairs bed room. I slept with them. Mother used to tell stories. Elder brother used to sleep with grandmother. He was her favourite. Paternal uncle Krishnaphan was an occasional visitor. We loved him, as he was a good storyteller. About Lilliputs we heard from him. He was dark and fat unlike another p. uncle Vasudevaphan who was slim and fair, the first person to go to school from K.K. family. He was teacher and a close friend of E.M.S. Namboodiripad.

One day an old lady came, covered up to the neck in pure white dhoti (in north India only a widow will dress in white) Do you know her? –they asked. When I blinked, they all laughed . I felt ashamed. It was mother’s ma. As a girl, she was born and brought up in the same house where we were staying temporarily-the great Veembur Kadalayil Mana (which was lying vacant at the time. Mahatma Gandhi visited the house in 1929). Father who was a good architect and astrologer was making our house near the river, about four miles away. One day brother and I accompanied him to see the construction work. My legs were paining like hell. I earned the reputation of having walked four miles when four years old.

At that time , another paternal uncle, Parameswaran by name, took me with him to fort Tripunithura where royal family members lived. By custom, only a nambudiri may marry a princess. And, in a nambudiri family only the eldest can marry; others may have legitimate relationship with women of other upper castes, the latter not entitled for a share of nambudiri property. They are not allowed to share meals with us.(My grandfather’s younger brother’s daughter was my schoolmate .I never knew about the blood relationship, though I somehow liked her. Of course I was too shy to talk to her! )

That is how uncle married a real princess and lived in Palace no.11. I was too small to notice the clean bed, the sumptuous food (at home we had it only on birthdays or during Onam) The great festival was going on at the Poornathrayeesha (Krishna) temple and there were any number of elephants (I wanted to become a mahout-I am never tired of watching these majestic animals)

An elephant was being fed. Uncle asked me-do you want to mount it . I shook my head. The mahout lifted me and handed over to his colleague sitting on the elephant. He placed me on its neck. I felt uncomfortable, its hair pricking my naked bottom and I being lifted up and down by the motion of its head while eating; still I enjoyed it .

One day we were taken to Akavoormana near river Periyar. We enjoyed playing in the shallow swift flowing water. I lay down in the water and was carried away some distance. Flapping my arms I managed to remain floating. Thus I learnt the rudiments of swimming. I do not know how to swim really. Like cattle only my head remains above water.

There were two young elephants there. As a baby Ramankutty used to roam about in the house and snatch things from the kitchen. Even now I like to have a baby elephant ….

Vasudevan uncle (the youngest among five brothers, father being the eldest) was working as teacher in Namboori Vidyalaya at Trichur. I would look with admiration the fat books in his shelf. One day when I grow up I shall read them!

Savithri was born. I refused to see the baby. I wanted a brother. This dislike of girls remained for a long time to come.

When Vas uncle brought a wife I was too shy to meet her. Afterwards the words “cheriamme “automatically escaped from my mouth and all exclaimed “today it will rain”

Recently, during morning walk I reached the church and, turning right, easily located the arch, proclaiming entry towards the Shiv temple. I went through it and turned right. A little further, I had hardly turned left when I could easily spot the old gate as it was in 1937! It was something like a flashback in TV screen! The front yard was very small. (in my mind it was very big.)The main building was intact, though concretised. I saw mother’s bedroom upstairs where I slept. Through the left side I traced a few steps and saw the workplace where women husked rice .It was locked. I could easily see the rope swing and Bhagi and I playing there. The reddish brown cow must be somewhere nearby. Bhagi showed me how to pick silky smooth, egg shaped thing (she called it pattunni) from the cow’s skin. She would place it on a stone and crush it with another stone spilling blood. Ma must be in the kitchen. The great surprise was when I turned to the east courtyard and looked to the flight of steps leading to the orchard. I was expecting at least thirty steps. I could count hardly four! To the child everything appears on a mega screen. To the grown up, it is all on TV screen. The surroundings had been cut into plots and sold. There are flats now. But the main structure is unoccupied till now.

Originally, it belonged to Moothedath Kadalayil which was merged with Veembur Kadalayil. On shifting to Pazhai, the house was sold to Akavoor Mana, my paternal grand mother’s maiden house (illam). We were just living there. The Akavoor namboodiri even suggested,” sister, why don’t you live here, why build a new house?” But father wanted to be near our village.

This morning I decided to use my Dutch Lenormand deck (Het Lenormand Spel). I shuffled the cards while focusing on the question, “What will happen today?” Then I spread the deck out face down and randomly picked three cards for my Lenormand Daily Draw:

Dog + Snake + Lady

The Lady represents a woman in my life, and the Dog represents someone that this woman knows. It could be a friend or even a boyfriend. The Snake indicates that there are problems between them. It could be a difficult relationship, or maybe a betrayal.

I’m not aware of a woman in my life who is having problems in a friendship or relationship. I’m interested to see what happens today to fit the message in these cards.

Update Nov 30, 2009:

A female friend (Lady) contacted me yesterday to share that she had heard from an ex-boyfriend (Dog) who broke her heart many years ago. He contacted her through facebook, and let her know that he regrets how things ended between them. My friend is married with a baby, and this was not a contact she was happy to deal with (Snake). It took her many years to get over the past relationship, and she does not want to open the old wounds.

4 Words that describe my night. Since about 7 i’ve done these 4 things, listen to the song Air

4 Words that describe my night.
Since about 7 i’ve done these 4 things, listen to the song Airport by the Motors, play Grid on my Xbox, watch and finally be content with Xfactor and rage about Virgin Media.

My dad had Airport on his iPod which i was using whilst on my treadmill, I fell in love with the song, one of the few songs with real meaning. I really like this at the moment, Im at 65 plays so far today.
Grid, not had much time recently to play much Xbox, it doesn’t bother me at all but this weekend I had some time to myself and instead of watching Wall-E which I’m bored of I went straight into 50 laps of the Nurburgring. Classic track, classic racing. Well earned after making myself a Java Clock today.
Xfactor, finally Jedward have gone and finally 10 good songs by 5 good singers, Lloyd was by far the weakest and strongest is impossible to state. I’m content with the first good show in ages.

Virgin Media, freaking peak hours limited, all I want to do is download Mint 8, it’s free, it’s legal, it’s linux and it’s going at 5 freaking kb/s. Not a happy man.

I also miss my lady
