The Yan family has its roots in Pagsanjan, Laguna.

Pagsanjan's Welcome Arch...standing in the same spot for about 150 years...

Pagsanjan, by any standard, is a small town — approximately 36,000 residents in 7,500 households in some 43 square kilometers.  It sits along the Pagsanjan River, 101 kilometers south of Manila.

The name “Pagsanjan” is a short version of “pinagsangahan,” which was the original name of the barrio which sat where the Balanac and Bumbungan Rivers merged to become one.  It is here where Japanese and Chinese traders founded the town in 1668, originally as a barrio of the neighboring town of Lumban.  In December of that same year, the then-Governor of Laguna, General Manuel Dela Peña Bonifaz, issued a proclamation declaring the barrio as a town.  (It was also then that the town was formally renamed to “Pagsanjan,” because the Spaniards could not pronounce the polysyllabic Pinagsangahan.) Twenty years later, in 1688, it replaced the town of Bay as the capital of Laguna.  It remained such until 1858, during which it bloomed as the cultural and commercial center of the province.

The Yan Family Crest

According to family records which date back to 1719, the family’s patriarch is Don Antonio de la Resurecciόn, born on April 17, 1735.  The last to use the de la Resurecciόn name was his great grandson, Graciano.

Graciano Cosme de la Resurecciόn was born on December 18, 1831 and his wife Maria Limcuando Fernandez on August 31, 1834. They were married on February 16, 1859.  They had 10 children — Ambrosia (1859-1933), Tomasa (1830-1938), Guadalupe (1862-1916), Jose (1864-1924), Lucia (1866-1935), Mariano (1867-1929), Isabel (1869-1870), Carlos (1870-1903), Ramon (1872-1941) and Roque (1879-1960).

This generation of 10 children was the first to use the family name “Yan.”

My family comes from the “Mariano branch” — my grandfather was Mariano Fernandez Yan, born October 6, 1867 and died August 25, 1929.  He was married to Dolores Gertrudes Salem.

My father was Mariano “Menito” Salem Yan, born August 28, 1917 and died March 13, 1987.  He married my mother, Emerenciana “Dolly” Casado, on May 1, 1946.  He had just ended his service in the Philippine Army in World War II.

My brothers Albert and Louie.

They had three children — myself and my two siblings, Albert and Louie.  Each of us has one child.  Rica and I have Daniel James (DJ), TC and Albert have Kimberly Ann (Kimmie), and Debbie and Louie have Jordan. Chronologically, Kimmie came first, followed by Jordan.  DJ is the youngest.

We all live in the US now, although Albert has made quite a few trips back to the Philippines, since his work takes him to China, Hongkong, and some other Asian countries.

All our children grew up in California, though the three of them have varying degrees of “Filipinization” — the most “Filipinized” being DJ, who still loves adobo, pongki-pongki, longganisa, tilapia and bangus, among other Filipino foods.  Jordan spent his college freshman year in Ateneo, coaching the school’s soccer team, before he came back to finish his studies.  Kimmie is working in the entertainment industry, intent on being a producer of a successful TV series.

Through the generations, a number of Pagsanjenos have risen to prominence in national circles.

In the military, there have been six generals and one commodore — more than any other town in the Philippines.  The most recognized is Gen. Manuel T. Yan, who became Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.  He subsequently became Ambassador to Thailand and the Court of St. James, but is best remembered for the many years of effort he put into resolving the age-old conflict between Filipinos and Filipino-Muslim dissidents in Mindanao.  Other Pagsanjenos of general rank include Brigadier General Fidel Llamas, Brigadier General Elias Lavadia, Brigadier General Cipriano Ramiro, and Brigadier General Luis (Bobby) Rivera.  The lone navy commodore from Pagsanjan is Commodore Remo Lavadia.

Mario Montenegro was born in Pagsanjan of a Filipino father and French mother.  In his teen years as a member of the famed Hunters ROTC guerillas, he became an active fighter against the Japanese.  In later years, he became a matinee idol, and was nominated thrice for Best Actor awards by FAMAS. His family home still stands in Pagsanjan.  He died in 1988.

Movie idol Rico Yan was a grandson of Gen. Manuel Yan.

Two generations later came teenage idol Rico Yan (a grandson of Gen. Manuel Yan).  He died at a young age but touched the hearts of millions of fans.

He had, before his death, formed a foundation called “Pinoy Yan!,”  a non-profit organization that aims to make young people stay in school and value education.  He died in 2002 of pancreatitis.

He graduated from La Salle, and his funeral was one of the largest in Philippine history, and millions lined the route to the cemetery.

Dr. Francisco Benitez was an eminent educator and first Dean of the U.P. College of Education.  Dean Conrado Benitez, founder of the U.P. College of Business Administration was a great professor of economics. Helen Z. Benitez, (daughter of Dean Conrado Benitez) became President of the Philippine Women’s University; Don Vicente Fabella was founder of the Jose Rizal College. Professor Arturo Guerrero was president of the Trinity College (Quezon City).

That’s espanol for pinhole of the south. I’ve been a pinhole fan since way, way back that I can’t remember. Taken with a Kidzlabs pinhole camera kit.

A carrinha Laguna é muito mais feliz em termos de estilo que a berlina e por isso mesmo tem sido o “cavalo de batalha” da Renault, não estranhando que num mercado nacional consumidor de carrinhas a marca francesa aposte numa gama enriquecida com o sistema de direcção total 4Control e equipamento de topo.

É inegável que a carrinha Laguna tem mais charme e personalidade que a berlina, algo sensaborona, alargando esse poder de sedução agora com a aplicação a toda a gama da face e corpo das versões GT. Uma medida sensata que ajuda a colocar a Laguna Break em patamares superiores.

As questões de estilo são, naturalmente, subjectivas e neste particular “cada cabeça sua sentença”, mas se quiser fugir ao cinzentismo habitual neste segmento e aparecer com um carro diferente do VW Passat ou do BMW 320d, o Laguna é um carro a considerar. Referência, apenas, para a qualidade de construção da carroçaria, com folgas perfeitas, junções bem realizadas e plásticos de protecção com razoável qualidade.

Interior acolhedor

Coisa de que ninguém se pode queixar é do conforto a bordo do Laguna Break, nem outra coisa seria de esperar de um Renault, honra lhe seja feita. Além disso, somos recebidos por um habitáculo bem construído, com materiais de qualidade satisfatória quer no olhar quer no toque. O estilo, uma vez mais subjectivo, é bem interessante e rejeitando o vanguardismo do Megane, a instrumentação manteve-se analógica (vamos ver no futuro…). O comando do ar condicionado é uma peça muito bem feita e fácil de utilizar e o comando do sistema multimédia não coloca problemas. O “software” é que por vezes é confuso, mas com um pouco de prática chegamos lá.

A posição de condução é facilmente encontrada graças às regulações encontradas no volante (profundidade e altura) e no banco (altura e longitudinal), tendo o primeiro pormenor de ser cortado na parte inferior. Um toque desportivo interessante.

Atrás há espaço para cinco ocupantes sem grandes constrangimentos, apenas ligeiríssima dificuldade para arrumar as pernas quando quem se senta à frente é de percentil superior ao normal. A forma da carroçaria prejudica, também, um pouquinho a altura do banco ao tejadilho, pelo que alguns poderão ficar a roçar com a cabeça no forro.

Quanto à bagageira, tem 508 litros que podem chegar aos 1593 litros com o acto de rebatimento dos bancos traseiro, acto esse muito simples com o Easybreak, sistema que permite essa operação com apenas um gesto. Para aumentar a versatilidade, a Laguna Break tem abertura independente do óculo traseiro para acesso de pequenos objectos.

O equipamento é muito completo nesta versão. Em termos de segurança temos direito a airbags frontais, laterais e de cortina (os laterais traseiros custam 190 euros), ESP, ABS com EBD, controlo de tracção, sensores de estacionamento atrás, sensores de chuva e luminosidade. A monitorização da pressão dos pneus custa 200 euros. Depois destacamos o cruise control, jantes de liga leve, rádio com comandos no volante, computador de bordo, sistema de navegação TomTom, ar condicionado automático bizona, bancos em tecido/pele, vidros eléctricos, travão de mão electromecânico e fecho central de portas com sistema mãos livres por cartão. Se quiser o tecto de abrir eléctrico (890 euros), os faróis de xénon direccionais (790 euros) e a pintura metalizada (630 euros) terá de alargar os cordões à bolsa.

Mecânica poderosa, comportamento excelente

O motor 2 litros do Laguna debita 150 CV e um binário de 340 Nm, valores interessantes para o segmento, embora longe das referências actuais que já estão para lá dos 170 CV. Além disso, o binário está localizado nas 2000 rpm, valor que causa alguns problemas nas recuperações. Até porque a caixa de seis velocidades tem uma sexta longa para permitir que o motor rode a baixas rotações e diminua assim o consumo e as emissões de CO2.

Apesar disso, o motor Renault é muito suave e linear de utilizar compaginando-se de forma perfeita com o mesmo tipo de comportamento em termos de conforto. Carregado, o Laguna Break exige alguma atenção quando toca às ultrapassagens, pois tudo se processa obviamente de forma mais lenta.

No que toca aos consumos, o motor dCi exibe-se num bom nível, pois a média ponderada por nós obtida no traçado de referência que utilizamos habitualmente (e que mistura cidade, autoestrada e estradas de diferentes tipos com declives e tráfego diferenciado) não foi além dos 7,2 litros. Longe dos 5,9 litros anunciados pela Renault, mas ainda assim valor bem interessante olhando ao peso e ao facto de termos feito uma condução despreocupada com o consumo. Caso aplicássemos algumas das técnicas para poupar combustível, provavelmente poderíamos ter retirado 1 litro à média obtida. As emissões são de 153 gr/km.

O sistema 4Control é o “rebuçado” desta nova gama Laguna Break. Na base, estamos perante um sistema de quatro rodas direccionais que para fazer as rodas traseiras virar utiliza um motor eléctrico que recebe informações vindas dos sensores de velocidade, ângulo do volante e ABS/ESP. Abaixo dos 60 km/h as rodas viram um máximo de 3,5 graus no sentido oposto ao das rodas da frente, situação que se verifica para reduzir o diâmetro de viragem. Em andamento acima dos 60 km/h, as rodas traseiras viram para o mesmo lado das rodas dianteiras até um máximo de 2 graus. Desta forma, consegue-se levar a traseira para dentro da curva e não para fora.

Na prática ficamos com um automóvel que curva de forma admirável, passa pelas curvas de raio mais apertado de forma exemplar, aceitando mudar de direcção com uma rapidez impressionante. Ou seja, a traseira escorrega muito menos, o ESP raramente entra em acção e a sensação ao volante é óptima. Requer um bocadinho de habituação, mas é um fantástico sistema que ajuda e muito a qualidade do comportamento.

Com uma direcção suave e desta vez algo comunicativa, o Laguna Break 4Control é um carro muito agradável de conduzir, pela sua eficácia, suavidade e conforto.

Não é barato, pois encosta-se aos 40 mil euros (39.550 euros) mas com este nível de equipamento, conforto e qualidade de comportamento – além da qualidade de construção e habitabilidade – o Renault Laguna Break 2.0dCi 4Control é uma das mais racionais compras do segmento. E sempre pode rolar diferente dos outros… e por menos dinheiro!

De todos los lectores es sabido que este verano estuve en Italia y sin duda, lo que más me impactó e impresionó fue Venecia. Pero desgraciadamente Venecia a partir de hoy y si nadie lo remedia no es una ciudad es un pueblo.

Hoy he conocido la triste noticia, y es que Venecia deja de ser una ciudad y pasa a ser un pueblo, o quizás un parque temático (más triste si cabe) tras quedarse con tan solo 60.000 habitantes. Ya me lo dijeron los guías, que la ciudad ponía demasiados impedimentos como para vivir feliz en ella. Comenzando por un desagradable hedor producida por las mareas bajas, pasando por las plagas de ratas asociadas a las mareas altas (trepan por los lavabos y tuberías de los primeros pisos) y acabando por el abusivo precio de los comercios, sobre todo la hostelería, provocado por la bestial llegada diaria de visitas, algo que pude comprobar en mis propios huesos y que podéis ver en alguna de las fotos que tome.

Opcionalmente cogimos una visita nocturna a la ciudad y la visión general era de abandono, pudimos ver otra Venecia, con una iluminación muy tenue, casi estudiada para crear el tan conocido romanticismo de la ciudad. Pero unido a ello, solo nos tropezábamos con trabajadores con carretas (no hay vehículos a motor en toda la ciudad, lo que dificulta el transporte de mercancías a las tiendas y hoteles) y basuras hasta arriba de suciedad (hay que retirarlas a mano), sin duda vimos la Venecia real.

Todo esto ha generado un éxodo masivo pasando de los 120.000 habitantes a los 60.000 actuales en tan solo 40 años. Esta despoblación amenaza con convertir Venecia en un parque temático. Algo que según mi opinión destrozaría el misticismo que tiene esta preciosa laguna.

This morning was completely fantastic.  I’ve missed the early misty mornings in CA, which greeted me this a.m. 

Watched the neighborhood crows’ roost break into today’s sunlight …. hearing their wings as they flew over me and disappeared into the distant morning light. 

I learned that retirement community terrorists are alive and well. These terrorists are determined to force their values and beliefs onto those that are unfortunate to live in the same building as them and are a real pain in the ass.  Definition of terrorism:  To intimidate or coerce, the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.  There is a point that these self-appointed individuals cross over the line of “helpful suggestions” to the stalking others that do not align their beliefs with those of the retirement community terrorists.  Who gave them this power?  And what rights do they have to stalk and prey on others?  (Note that a local retirement community terrorist of one building, in particular, climbs on the roof and uses binoculars to “spy” on others, and has also managed to have two beautiful trees removed due to …….?)  I now label these people as Terrorists of Retirement Communities.  More to come on this.

Time to eat breakfast and shove stuff back into my suitcase and hit the road (with my mother driving — my fingers ache from holding onto the dashboard during these drives).

because I’ll be on f*cking nightshift again.

Flying Monkeys Air didn’t pan out, and so I ended up flying on Delta. 

The first leg of the journey was from Boise, ID to Salt Lake City, UT.  I got to watch someone use an ”extension” seatbelt (due to body weight) … the snack on the plane consisted of a cookie (actually, two cookies per packet)….  WOW!  Plane was small, however, nothing compared to the next plane that I boarded for the flight from Salt Lake to Santa Ana John Wayne airport…

If the planes used by SkyWest get any smaller … well, I actually  can’t imagine that.  I sat next to person (actually, I was almost sitting ON the person) who belched, displayed labored breathing and incoherent mumblings, throughout the flight … I disembarked from the incredibly small plane happy this person was not my brother or anyone connected to my family.

While waiting for my mom to pick me up from the airport arriving flights curb area, I noticed an elderly gentleman walking towards me … geeze, he somehow looked familiar … MY FATHER!!  WOW!  A surprise!!

We lunched at Los Brisas, with the beautiful people of Laguna Beach. 

A side note:  I am seeing my father growing old before my eye …. and there is nothing I can do to stop it…

Back at my mom’s, watching crows fly to their evening roost.  Wow!!  This I LOVE!

And I now realize, that although I gave CA up in 2004, I miss it.  I think I want to move back.  I miss being in a “liberal” state.  Boise, ID, now seems too conservative.  I miss the “freedom” that CA offers.  Now, I need to start working my way back to CA.

Tomorrow a.m., on to Temecula for a week-long retreat.  Never been on a retreat, and so I have no expectations at this point. 

 I miss the flock and Mozart.

Si, lo confieso los lugares a los que más me gusta ir son los que sean más inmaculados. Debe ser que tengo alma de explorador en algún rincón de mi ser. Por ello amo los lugares como el desierto y los páramos. Lugares que no parecen pertenecer a nadie, donde se puede andar libremente y explorar.

De los páramos que conozco (que no son muchos, lo admito) el que más me gusta es el Páramo de Sumapaz. Principalmente por su bastedad, da impresión de un territorio no tocado por el hombre. Cuando uno mira esas montañas en los inmensos horizontes sólo se puede tener el deseo de seguir y seguir, para ver que hay más adelante.

Explorar hasta llegar al fin del mundo y ahún asi, seguir.

ISLANDIA

Laguna con agua azul

Esta isla situada en el extremo norte de Europa no sólo te ofrece un paisaje imposible de ver en cualquier otro lugar del planeta sino que además te ofrece innumerables actividades para disfrutar de tus vacaciones. Ademas de su bella capital Reykjavík, sus volcanes, geysers , ícebergs, fiordos, cascadas increíbles y caballos que todavía se encuentran en libertad, podrás disfrutar de una comida y cultura espectacular y sentir la mágica atmósfera a la que contribuye no sólo la geografía, sino también sus criaturas mágicas y elfs.

Islandia es un país de ensueño. Viajar a Islandia significa descubrir una naturaleza increíble que no existe en ningún otro país, un entorno puro, limpio y tan, tan distinto…

Durante el viaje a Islandia tendras la posibilidad de observar ballenas, montar caballos islandeses (con su “trote” especial, el caballo islandés puede trotar de 5 maneras diferentes), visitar desiertos de lava y una de las cascadas más hermosas de Europa, ver las auroras boreales, disfrutar de aguas termales naturales o pisar tierras vírgenes que todavía no ha pisado ningún turista.

 - Islandia tiene solamente unos 300.000 habitantes y el 60% de la población vive en la capital Reykjavík (la capital más nórdica del mundo y su nombre significa literalmente “La Bahía del humo”.)

- En Islandia hay el doble número de ovejas que de gente.

- En el verano hay 24 horas de luz diaria y en el invierno hay muy pocas horas de luz.

- Islandia fue el primer país en el mundo en votar democráticamente a una mujer como presidente.

- Islandia no tiene su propio ejército, ni fuerzas aéreas, ni guarda costas.

- Los islandeses no tienen apellidos de verdad. Sus apellidos consisten en el nombre del padre y después se añade “son” o “dóttir” dependiendo si es un hijo o una hija.

- Las páginas amarillas de Islandia tienen un listado según los nombres, no según los apellidos como la mayoría de los países.

- En Islandia no se usa llamar a las personas con Sr., Sra., porque hasta al presidente de Islandia se dirigen con su nombre.

- Los islandeses pueden leer las sagas que eran escritas hace más de mil años en su lengua actual sin problemas.

- Los islandeses creen en los “elfos” y en otras criaturas mágicas. Hasta fueron capaces de cambiar el plan de una carretera porque unos decían que allí vivían unas de esas criaturas.

- Los islandeses calientan sus casas con la energía del agua termal que también llena las piscinas por todo el país. En el invierno también calientan hasta las aceras en la capital.

- Unos 7000km2 de Islandia están cubiertos por el glaciar. (La isla tiene 103 000km2)

- Islandia es uno de los países más caros, con la economía y el bienestar casi mejor del mundo.

- Los islandeses tienen el índice más alto de uso de móviles y ordenadores del mundo.

- Hasta el año 1989 la cerveza ha sido

- En Islandia no hace falta dejar propina porque su cultura no lo exige, pero la verdad es que los camareros no se enfadan si la dejás.

-Es un pais muy verde aunque uno se lo imagina cubierto de nieve y hielo.

Yes, its November, and I think today its made it pretty clear that Winter has settled in. I haven’t really got much too share with you in terms of imagry, so its just a quick update on what projects we’re dealing with right now.

CD DESIGN
This is a typography project, so I’m hoping I can get some pretty good ideas across! After last years project on designing my own type, I have really gotten into typography. I’ve had a few ideas, but nothing thats got me terribly excited as of yet. I’ll post good ideas as they come to me I guess.

Personal Development (Uni Stuff)
Went tooo Lincoln on Saturday just goneee, and went to look at the University there. I quite liked it, so I’m thinking its going down as a second choice, cause I still think Norwich is the one for me. It has nice accomodation, and from what I’ve heard the studios are nice too. I didn’t stay too long as I wasn’t feeling to great! Going to the UCAS fair with College in a couple of weeks, and then the day after back to London to see the LCC.

Our joint group with the photography lot, we have to make three Book covers, based on three random searches on Wikipedia. Mine was Laguna, RAF Squadron and New Your City Subway. I took some pictures of newspapers today to support my cover on New York City Subway, and like some of the results.

Adverstising
Last but not least, it advertising on a Friday. We’ve been set a new brief to create an advert for a charity of our choice. I’ve got a few ideas, but kinda want to work them out before putting anything on here. But will do soon, promise!

In the week off, I tried to do as much work as possible, but found myself decorating my brothers room. Also, driving is going well, so I’m hoping that it won’t be too long till I can take my test. More updates soooooon

Anyways, I haven’t been shooting much lately…but I promise myself from here own that I would try to take photos whenever the opportunity arises. I guess my laziness gets the best of me…most of the times…if not always. I would try to keep the words few…

Francesco Pionati Segretario Nazionale di Alleanza di Centro Membro della Commissione Trasporti della Camera  Sul tema della “Regolamentazione della viabilità in laguna” con i rappresentanti dei motoscafisti.  Saranno presenti inoltre tutti i rappresentanti provinciali e regionali del Veneto di Alleanza di Centro, e diversi esponenti di altre realtà politiche locali. Nell’occasione verranno presentanti i nuovi aderenti al partito e i nuovi rappresentanti regionali, in particolare il prof. Onofrio Donzelli per la provincia di Rovigo.
