While researching my own kind on the seatpost wikipedia page I came across this fantastic old Diamond Back braced laid back. A think of beauty. Just look at it. The lines. The welds. The embossed “D.” It’s a style, and a love of post that is missing from modern design.

Milldreds is one of London’s few vegetarian restaurants. The fresh and airy kitchen feel will make you and your date feel welcome, the clean white walls and flower vase on the tables add a personal touch too. This is perfect if your date is vegetarian or loves something a little different! This is also ideal for late tea or lunch. We think the best table are the ones near the window if you can get one so you can enjoy delicious dishes and people watch in the heart of Soho.

Mildred’s doesn’t take bookings so you may have to wait but we think its definitely worth it!

It’s a great place to visit on a date in afternoon or in the evening. You can take advantage of the big leather sofas upstairs or go downstairs for a more intimate Hawaiian feel – sounds strange but it works!
(Map)

This is a great date for sunny summer and winter afternoons. You could easily do this walk in reverse. If you and your loved one are early birds you could start off the day with a hearty English breakfast at the Serpentine bar & kitchen and then burn off all those calories on your way to the other end of the park to the Serpentine gallery. If you’re anything like us, or if it’s a first date we’d recommend you have a lie in and amble down to the gallery around midday – this way you’ll have lots to talk about on your stroll through the park!

THE SERPENTINE GALLERY

The Serpentine is a very small gallery in the middle of Kensington Gardens so getting there is pretty easy. You can stroll there from different parts of town; walk down from Lancaster Gate, High Street Kensington or South Kensington.

The location and beautifully ornate design of the building always creates an interesting contrast with the contemporary art contained within. However, be warned it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the exhibitions are interesting and unexpected like in 2007 the gallery became the first museum to exhibit Damian Hirst’s personal art collection, which included a masturbating car and a video of the underground placed in a Whales mouth! But the avant-garde nature of the Serpentine can lead to some pretty ridiculous exhibitions but can still be great fun if you don’t take it too seriously.

We recommend you checkout their website http://www.serpentinegallery.org for information on what’s on and bear in mind that the gallery gets pretty busy at weekends.

After you’ve finished at the Gallery take a walk through the park making your way over to the Serpentine Bar and Restaurant.

With great views and fair prices, Serpentine Bar and Kitchen is an ideal romantic date at any time of day that won’t leave a hole in your pocket.

Although it’s owned by benugo, a chain of restaurants and coffee shops, it has a lovingly unique feel. The decor is simple and ensures almost everyone has a view of the glistening Serpentine. A little lounge has been cleverly assembled in the centre, with love seats and cushions perfect for a smoochy winter cocktail. If the weather is good, however, there are large cushions available for fun and frolics on the grassy area!

It’s self-service; you grab a seat which makes it even more relaxing. The menu here is really casual and a good mix of nibbles and bigger plates, there is something for everyone and on the whole the quality is really good. If you don’t feel like having dinner you can have a quick snack or afternoon tea or we’d recommend stopping off for a pint at least, to help conversation flow!

If you do want something more intimate and glam then you could choose from the following options. We’ve chosen restaurants that are intimate but wont require you to be dressed up to the nines. Guys if you’re organising, please bear in mind that your lady might be dressed quite casually so don’t book the Dorchester!

It reminds us of a cool New York drinker’s bar so it’s not difficult to see why this place is so popular. They like to be individual and this comes across in their diverse range of music, drinks list and food. During the week you can enjoy some soothing soul while sipping on hot buttered rum or dance your weekend away with the DJs spinning an eclectic mix of traditional RnB, rock and electro floor fillers. You’ll need to check what’s on but we reckon the best nights for a date are Wednesdays when the Sax Pastilles are playing their prohibition era jazz and 30’s and 40’s swing, they’ll definitely get your feet tapping and your lips smacking.

Azteca is probably one of the only truly laid-back bars on the Kings Road. The welcoming atmosphere, friendly service and good selection of drinks makes Azteca and idea place to have a drink with your date. The music is a bit random at times but always fun and there is plenty of seating. It is very popular with the locals and gets pretty lively on the weekend with lots of dancing downstairs. For a more relaxed date opt for a weekday and sit upstairs in the right hand side corner by the window.

The Chelsea’s farmer’s market doesn’t look like what you might expect, there are no muddy vegetables or bundles of sweet smelling herbs. In fact it is mainly composed of shops housed in little wooden huts. There are two restaurants here; La Pizzeria and The Marketplace Restaurant which are both delightful on a summer’s day. The Marketplace Restaurant is open until 7pm and best enjoyed on a summer’s day, La Pizzeria has good indoor and outdoor seating.

La Petite Auberge is a little rustic anomaly on Upper street of fine French fare, attentive service and a warm and cosy atmosphere which together creates an atmosphere of intimacy and all at a very decent price. Its laid-back, unpretentious attitude makes it ideal for a casual dinner date.

Call me unpatriotic, call me evil whatever but just don’t call me impressed with what I see day to day in Trinidad and Tobago. I haven’t been gone for that long, only three and a half years but I feel like it’s been decades. Unlike many Trinis who leave, and then try backseat drive by reading newspapers online and leaving their “informed comments”; when I left, I left. I never looked at a newspaper, after carnival never listened to a radio station, nothing…and I’m paying for it now. I can no longer relate to “my people”.

Now that I’m back home, for a while and not just for vacation, I’ve found myself being more and more upset by the mentality of our people. While away I was never ashamed to say that I was from Trinidad. When people asked where I was from I answered. When they actually knew that the country existed I was always interested in seeing what image we portrayed to the world.

Typically they knew of some sports personality or would mention something about how great the weather is or how beautiful the beaches are (which makes me realize they heard when I said “Caribbean” and not “Trinidad” because our beaches are terrible). But the thing I heard the most was, “Oh Carnival, you guys know how to party.” Life must be so laid-back there. I’d usually reply, “It is, and it’s great up until you actually want to get something done.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m about as laid-back as they come. But I don’t need my bank teller to be so laid-back that she’s texting her friend to ask where they’re going tonight while counting my money. I don’t need my grocery clerk to be so laid-back that she laughs when she swipes a sealed pack of 14 items, 14 times and then calls her manager to fix the error who then jokes that she doesn’t feel like coming back because she’s been making mistakes all day…neither of whom apologize.

I don’t think that we should be so laid-back that upon completion of a flyover, we stop in the middle of it to crack open a few beers and admire. Why do people come to a complete stop around the Savannah, halting traffic only to peer at the National Academy for the Performing Arts’s (look out for my next note on this place coming soon) pretty water fountain with lights? This isn’t being laid-back, it is arrogance and dare I say it, stupidity.

Yet this is something on which we seem to pride ourselves. We know how to have fun. We’re not as stuck up and anal as the Americans. True, but if we’re so cool, calm, and collected, why is it that everyone feels the need to race to on the nation’s roads, weaving in and out of traffic, driving on the shoulder and breaking red lights as if they’re a mere suggestion of road courtesy? Why is it that when I’m in a party I’m petrified to step on someone’s shoes because they may shoot me on the spot? Why do we barricade ourselves in our homes at night fearful to step outside until the sun rises again? Why is it that we claim to be so loving and tolerant but we’re quick to drop slurs like nigger, coolie, bullerman? If I was truly lax and fun loving I’d be too busy having fun with you to care if you were Black, Indian or Gay.

I read an article dated 07 March 2002 by Kevin Baldeosingh which stated:

“I don’t think anyone could truthfully describe Trinidad as a successful society. The gung-ho patriots always point to our harmonious race relations as a lesson we have to offer the world. But that success is relative only to worst-case scenarios of official racism (like the Indesh state once recommended by our more bigoted Indo-Trinidadians) or racial killings.
To besides, I’m not sure if we can take any real credit for having avoided these extremes. That would imply a moral and ethical sensibility which Trinidadians do not display in any other facet of national life. Rather, I think it is our small geographical area and oil wealth which account for the relatively peaceful co-existence of the races on this island.”

So not to go against David Rudder, but maybe I’m not “Trini to de bone” because I don’t believe in many of the things our country stands for and exhibits on a daily basis (which is when it really counts). And before you rush to call me an unpatriotic citizen, realize that all I’m saying is that I am simply not that narcissistic to believe that this country is the greatest, most flawless country in the world, just because I was born here.
