Lair of the Minotaur are one of the best metal bands on the road today. Imagine if Slayer stayed on the South Of Heaven course, and you have Lair of the Minotaur. I really can’t stress enough how brutally awesome they are! Listen to their MySpace tracks here. What I really like about their sound is how they take some standard death metal & thrash elements and add some new blood-crazed, flesh eating energy into it. I get kind of bored with a lot of metal bands playing the same oh-so-heavy bullshit that everyone’s been playing for 20+ years, or even worse, a band who tries to reinvent the sound/crossover or whatever. Both routes usually lead to the same pile of shit. LotM put in plenty of speed when needed, but definitely aren’t afraid of slowing down to let the doom soak in, even in the same song. Very nice!

I’ve seen them twice and will post both shows. This is the first. I showed up late and missed the first song or two, but the sound is better than my second (although complete recording). I was not impressed with the crowd at either of their concerts. They just sat there during the songs, and maybe gave a clap or two at the end. COME ON PEOPLE! I have an excuse not to get all crazy during the show (recording, duh), but what is theirs? I hope the band didn’t get the wrong idea…because I’d like to see them a third/fourth/fifth time!

W ostatnich paru latach pojawiło się kilka naprawdę niezłych grup, które dość szybko dorobiły się dużego uznania wśród fanów muzyki ciężkiej. Jednakże sukces i wielkość w oczach jednych często także oznacza nic wielkiego czy kolokwialnie mówiąc gówno w oczach innych. Nie powinno to nikogo dziwić, wszak od zarania dziejów to co dla jednego jest skarbem, dla drugiego jest śmieciem, a gałąź muzyki nie jest przecież wyjątkiem. O grupie Lair Of The Minotaur krążą więc różne opinie. Dla jednych to solidna dawka czystego, brutalnego metalu, dla innych to nudna, monotonna i po prostu nie warta uwagi muzyka. Po której stronie barykady jestem? Po tej pierwszej, jednak przyznaję, że muzyka Lair Of The Minotaur bywa monotonna.

Rok 2008 przyniósł na świat trzecie dziecko amerykanów – War Metal Battle Master. Jak sama nazwa płyty wskazuje możemy się tutaj spodziewać prawdziwego metalu, który nie zamierza okazywać litości, tylko będzie bez skrupułów niszczyć, mordować i miażdżyć swoim brzmieniem. Dostajemy więc osiem potężnych utworów, ciężkich, mocarnych i niestety momentami nieco nużących, traktujących o walkach, zabijaniu, a także zahaczających o tematykę starożytnej Grecji.

No więc jakie są wrażenia przy słuchaniu tej płyty? Mieszane. Z jednej strony znakomite, pełne mocy riffy, solidny bas i świetna praca perkusji, a do tego wszystkiego pasujący krzyczący i ryczący głos wokalisty. Z drugiej strony wieje nudą. Nie zawsze i nie wszędzie, jednak te powiewy są odczuwalne i mogą zrazić kogoś do tego albumu.

Płyta zaczyna się trzaskającym Horde of Undead Vengeance, który od razu pokazuje co czeka nas dalej. Zniszczenie, zgniecenie i unicestwienie. Bębny młócą aż miło, a bas jest wspaniały. Dalej atakuje tytułowy War Metal Battle Master, do którego nakręcono nieco obrzydliwy, aczkolwiek fajny (ze względu na występujące tam panny) clip. Jest to wg mnie jedna z najfajniejszych, o ile nie najfajniejsza pozycja z tej płyty, niesamowicie podoba mi się tutaj riff zaczynający się ok minuty i czterdziestej sekundy, będący jakby punktem kulminacyjnym utworu, po którym następuje powrót do poprzedniego motywu. When The Ice Giants Slayed All to najkrótszy utwór na płycie, przytłacza jednak swoim brzmieniem jak reszta. Jest trochę wolniejszy od swoich poprzedników, ale to kolejny niszczyciel. Następny Slaughter The Bestial Legion to znów fajne riffy i kapitalna perkusja oraz ryki momentami nasuwające skojarzenia z black metalem, które zresztą obecne są i w innych kawałkach. Dynamiczny Black Viper Barbarian Clan to mój drugi ulubiony kawałek po tytułowym. Perkusista nie szczędzi bębnów, a wokalista strun głosowych. Po jakiejś połowie całość spowalnia, ale nie traci nic ze swojej siły. Assassins Of The Cursed Mist to następny bardzo dobry utwór, który zaczyna się stonowanym brzmieniem perkusji, charczącym wokalem i świetnym riffem. To jeden z bardziej podobających mi się momentów na płycie, wprawdzie tempo nie powala, ale to kolejna bezlitosna, miażdżąca inwazja na bębenki uszne. Przedostatni i zarazem najdłuższy na płycie kawałek Doomtrooper, jest że tak powiem najbardziej epicki. Klimatyczne, aczkolwiek krótkie intro prowadzące do niego i wchodzi masywny, walcowaty riff z powolną perkusją. To powoli posuwające się brzmienie rozciąga się właściwie na cały utwór, a w jego drugiej połowie pojawia się to, czego bardzo brakuje na tej płycie -  SOLÓWKA, od razu lepiej, choć nie należy ona do najlepszych jakie się słyszało. Jej pojawienie się wręcz ożywia utwór, nasycając go większą mocą. Ogólnie to jeden z lepszych kawałków na płycie. Jego końcówka przeistacza się w początek ostatniego tracka, Hades Unleashed, gdzie wchodzi spokojna gitara. Jednak już po chwili rozpętuje się kolejna wojna. Jest więc to następna porcja dobrych riffów i wspaniałej perkusji, przy którym to zniszczeniu faktycznie można uznać, że siły Hadesu wydostały się ostatecznie na powierzchnie siejąc wszędzie spustoszenie.

Jak więc słyszymy muzyka zawarta na tym albumie jest w pełni adekwatna do tytułu. Prawdziwy metal, prawdziwa moc i energia, idealna ścieżka dźwiękowa do krwawych i bezlitosnych bitew. Przede wszystkim bardzo dobra perkusja, mięsiste riffy i niekiedy wręcz przytłaczające całkowicie brzmienie. Niestety jak wspomniałem jest tutaj odczuwalna pewna monotonność, która może niekiedy zniechęcić. No i wielką ujmą płyty jest praktycznie brak solówek, a szkoda, gdyby gościły w każdym utworze, to była by to jedna z mojej topki 2008 roku. A tak, to po prostu dobry album, który opłaca się posiadać w swoich zbiorach.

Lair of the Minotaur

• Lair of the Minotaur – “Horde of Undead Vengeance”

Sex and violence run the world. It’s a cynical outlook, yes, but one that’s difficult not to espouse to some degree. And heavy metal, for all its merits, has historically been attuned to sex and violence. As a veritable cesspool of testosterone (which by no means discounts the contributions of women working in the genre), the subculture heavy metal has spawned in its three-decade existence is a sociological experiment in masculinity.

We can accept that aggressive music, whether metal, punk industrial or whatever, tends to appeal to a largely (and again, not exclusively) male audience. But there’s little wonder as to why. The terms used to describe the sound of the music – burly, brutal, muscular, heavy, pummeling, et. al. – evoke a brute-force imagery befitting the often violent and visceral images explored in the lyrics.

This is, of course, something that has evolved over time. Black Sabbath is hardly the same as Lair of the Minotaur, a Chicago band melding death metal to hardcore, resulting in brutally heavy, chest-pounding rock music that stomps and blasts. The vocals alternate between scorched cookie-monster growls and belly-deep declarations.

But perhaps most beneficial to this discussion of masculine identity as it pertains to heavy metal, and particularly to Lair of the Minotaur is one of the band’s music videos.

The title track of 2008’s War Metal Battle Master (album No. 5 for the trio) was promoted with a very NSFW video. In it, the trio, decked out in black t-shirts and sunglasses, looks, for their part, rather badass as they tear the song from their instruments. Cut into the shots of the band is a stitched-together narrative of medieval warriors hacking each other to blood-spurting bits. There is no good or bad guys, they all die just the same. But it’s the video’s second act, in which naked, cannibalistic women, begin to feast on the corpses of the dead or almost-dead warriors, that the tableau is complete.

This is machismo from front to back. The clash of iron blades and the gush of blood, the sound of loud squalls of guitar and naked women dressed only in the blood of their victims. One could read a message of misogyny – the women kill and devour these men. But the men aren’t particularly noble. Their cause for war is never defined or even implied. They kill. The women kill.

Mostly, I think the message is confused. And I think that’s an important point.

Most people, we might speculate, when they begin to discover music on their own terms, are in the throes of adolescence. Metal, for many teenage boys is an escapist realm, whether in the fantastical journeys of an Iron Maiden or the rebelliousness of a Judas Priest or the grisly horror-imagery of a Cannibal Corpse.

Metal doesn’t define gender identity for its largely young, male audience. But it can offer the opportunity to explore it.

Lair of the Minotaur plays Maryland Death Fest VII on Sunday, May 24. The Deathfest takes place May 22-24 at Sonar in Baltimore. More information is available at www.supremebrutality.com.

First is “War Metal Battle Master” by Lair of the Minotaur. Although I’m not crazy about the song, you just gotta appreciate the effort that went into this video. Those warrior dudes look like real extras from 300 or something. This next one for “Prehistoric Dog” by Red Fang takes the prize. Let’s consider it a funnier and sudsier take on the previous video. It wins for being Monty Python-esque and being a bitchin song to boot.

O-kay, so I’m just being an ignorant asshole, of course Iowa is the home of a Music Festival.. why wouldn’t it be?! I mean people live there right?? Like almost 3million people in total… that’s gotta be like 30th in the United States or something.. AND Mid-Western Americans need to listen to music too dammitt!!!

Non è facile confermarsi dopo un album come “The ultimate destroyer”, ma con questo nuovo lavoro i Lair of the Minotaur tornano a prendere a calci le nostre orecchie, con una violenza estremamente razionale e allo stesso tempo devastante.
Le aggressioni thrash sono ancora più tirate, incastrate alla perfezione con gli stacchi più heavy attraverso cambi ancora più ricercati rispetto al passato, sempre impantanati in una sfumata vena sludge, e accompagnati dalla voce che spazia dal growl allo scream con la disinvoltura che ben conosciamo; il tutto ci aggredisce con una produzione al solito volta ad esaltare la loro “grezza” precisione.
Anche i momenti doom sono migliorati notevolmente, soprattutto sulla splendida Doomtrooper, il cui titolo rende in pieno l’idea, in cui la band dimostra di sapersi destreggiare alla grande anche nel suddetto genere.
War Metal Battle Master è un disco che non si può non considerare se si ama la musica pesante (anche se si è nostalgici degli anni ‘80), e che conferma l’importanza che hanno acquisito i Lair of the Minotaur nella scena metal statunitense e non solo; se poi ci mettete il fatto che loro lo definiscono un “concept album about solving conflicts with a big fucking axe”, non capisco cosa aspettiate a procurarvelo.

Leur but était de faire l’album METAL qu’eux-mêmes auraient voulu entendre. Eux, ce sont les chicagoans Donald James Barraca, Steven Rathbone et Larry Herweg (également batteur de Pelican). Quand on sait que ces types ont tété le sein de leur mère au son de Hellhammer, Kreator, Entombed, Slayer, Possessed ou Sodom (respects Mesdames), qu’ils ont pris leurs premières bitures d’adolescents devant Cannibal Holocaust, The Thing, Cannibal Ferox ou Massacre à la tronçonneuse, qu’ils se passionnent pour la mythologie grecque parce que «c’est tellement cool d’arriver à décrire de telles atrocités de manière si belle et si poétique», et si on se souvient de leur premier ep Carnage au titre tout à fait digne de son contenu, alors on tend gentiment sa joue en attendant que ça tombe. The Ultimate Destroyer est une décharge de pur heavy METAL véhément, brutal et dense. Une réécriture moderne du Grand Livre du METAL avec une plume trempée dans l’encre des 80’s. En filigrane, les textes (en vers) de Rathbone, impénétrables sans l’appui des liner notes, revisitent bruyamment Homère, la mythologie hellénique et ses créatures amicales – Cerbère et Gorgones -, mais surtout, ils sont portés par un riffage increvable et une rythmique de forgeron. Le METAL de The Ultimate Destroyer ne souffre aucun sous-genre ni préfixe [black – thrash – death – doom - post]. Juste du METAL, terrassant, précis et «straight to the point», sans démonstration, excédents ou superflu, qui pour autant, ne sombre jamais dans les écueils du bourrinage béotien décérébré.
