BLAKROC is the thrilling new collaborative project from The Black Keys and a star-studded line-up of influential hip-hop artists that includes Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Pharoahe Monch, Ludacris, Jim Jones, Nicole Wray, NOE and Billy Danze (M.O.P). BLAKROC will be released on 27th of November Ireland on V2/Cooperative Music, the same day as its US release (to be dubbed “Blak Friday” by the independent record stores that will sell the album). Of the album, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach said “no samples were used on the record, it’s all live instruments and live vocals.”

Sessions began in early summer in Brooklyn with Mos Def’s songs among the first put to tape… Over the following weeks the ten other artists joined the party to play their part in what is unquestionably one of the most forward-thinking and exciting hip hop records of recent years…

“It was fun and refreshing to work with The Black Keys on the project… We all had one common denominator – The Love of Music” (RZA)

“Experimenting with different sounds and genres of music has always been important to me. While collaborating in the studio with The Black Keys and Damon Dash may seem like an unusual fit, it felt natural. We were able to bring our own unique strengths and experiences together, that signifies the true artistry of music. I think this is something that all fans of music will appreciate.” (Q-Tip)

“What it meant to me was something I always knew; great rock music and great hip-hop music fused together can create undeniable greatness.” (Pharaohe Monch)

“July Flame” explores the emotion of mid-summer. Drenched in wood smoke, sunlight, pastoral dales, fireworks and warm nights, the lyrics explore the dichotomy between one’s desire for permanence and security and the realisation that such things rarely exist.

“July Flame” is a magical and flawless collection of songs, highlighting Veirs’ masterful finger picking guitar and confident vocals. “Laura’s like the queen bee and my ear is her hive; she nests and makes honey in the hairs of my cochlea,” says Jim James of My Morning Jacket (who sings on several tracks).

The album breaks from Veirs’ previous full-band efforts, although many of the same players make appearances on the album, including long-time collaborators Karl Blau and Steve Moore. String arrangements are featured more on this album than on others; the brilliant improviser Eyvind Kang plays viola on many songs and legendary arranger Stephen Barber composed hauntingly beautiful string quartet arrangements for three songs.

July Flame is the sixth album that Laura and producer TUCKER MARTINE have made together. Recorded and mixed at their home, the song-writing, arrangements, production and performances create a fully realized piece of art that inspires reflection and calm in a world that spins unsteady.

July Flame is released on January 8th 2010 through Bella Union Records!

In the Mayan evolutionary theory, we are in the Ethical Era, and in order to evolve as a species, one must be living truthfully. Any white lies, large lies or areas of your life where you have misrepresented yourself or been dishonest will become so very painful in this, the 6th night of the Mayan Calendar, November 8, 2009 to November 2, 2010. The final purge has arrived and for some individuals their way of life is about to dismantle. Confession time is imminent!

André Agassi, former World Champion tennis professional, considered to be one of the world’s best players ever, recently revealed in his new autobiography that he engaged in taking drugs to win a tennis open one year when his form was off. Failing his drug test, he proceeded to lie to the sports council regarding the matter. I am not surprised to witness his revelations to the public in his new book as the incoming Mayan evolutionary energies of the last 10 years has been revolving around the theme of truth & integrity.

I went to school with the Agassi’s. André’s sister, Tammy, was one of my good childhood friends. They were a lovely family filled with integrity, strong opinions, and a good conscious. I am convinced André confessed his actions as his consciousness got the better of him. He revealed his truth and in doing so said to the public at large, “I made a mistake. I am sorry.” We, as humans recognize his infallibility, commend his brave admissions and release his actions. He may lose his title and cash prizes- every lie has a consequence-but he will be forgiven and the heavy load of his lies will be all the lighter. Sooner or later, it will become a distant past memory, embodied, learned from, not to be repeated. Life will usher in renewed, powerful experiences for Andre Agassi and his rebalanced spirit will triumph once again.

Although I am new to the Mayan calendar theories, I am schooled and versed in the Tarot. This era can be compared to the “20″ card named Judgement Day/Reckoning Day. In the traditional tarot imagery, the brilliance of the angels shines upon the people in the card, rendering them naked in truth before a higher power. The meaning of the card is that each and every individual will have to search their heart and mind to see what illusions persist, what games are being played and what lies will be revealed. Celestially purged of the unnecessary, one can finally wake up to a new and exciting reality. In the next year, no stone will remain unturned as the 6th night seeks to complete its final creation mission which is to lead everyone on earth into integrity. Every soul will have to hold a mirror to themselves and face their reflection. Do you like what you see? Are you a sparkly, multifaceted diamond filled with light? Are you a magical kaleidoscope of shapes? Are you a crystal clear ball of luminosity? Are you a midnight shining star? If not, you have some work to do!

No worries though, jaguar is here to help you. Jaguar is the Mayan animal that teaches us about truth, integrity & impeccability. Jaguar’s mission is to devour any unclean aspects of our behavior. Jaguar dishes out penalties for inappropriate behaviour, meanwhile offering rewards for those who have operated in honesty (Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams & David Carson). Jaguar says that he must roam our dreams now. Jaguar rules the 6th galactic night. Some people, and you may know a few of these, would rather die than be honest or live honestly. I am from the Belizean Creole culture. For the most part, we are a chancey, sneaky and liared (creole for deceitful) tribe. We are descendants of slaves & pirates and have inherited a few undesirable behavioural characteristics along the way. My Belizean tribe is in trouble in this 6th night. I send a prayer out to all those with ears to hear that they may learn to embody the new spiritually awakened energies. We live in the heart of Mayaland and jaguars literally roam around us: here the energies will be brutally intense.

What most people worldwide require at this time is the “inipo” ceremony- most commonly called the sweat lodge. Inipo is a Lakota word which means “you should purify yourself”. (The Lakota Sweat Lodge Cards by Chief Archie Fire Lame Deer and Helene Sarkis). The intense heat and steam of the Inipo Lodge forces all disease, fear, and maladies to leave the body. Often sacred herbs like copal, sweetgrass or sage are used to assist the spirit. The Inipo prepares one for a sacred journey. Our sacred journey is the Mayan Galactic 6th night. We must tread this time in wonder and with reverence.

Copal Sacred tree resin used in Mayan smudge ceremonies

Remember in a previous article I likened the Galactic 6th night to the 6th night of Biblical creation- God’s last night of creation before the 7th day when he shall rest. This is it- our Creator’s final glory! If you have done some inner work, life will be offering you beautifully, powerful growth & creation experiences in the next year; if not…woe be to your nervous system. Dhyani Ywahoo, Shaman, Cherokee Tribe says, “The denial of the fire of truth in yourself is going to be the denial of your heart’s beat- maybe you make your arteries get hard or something like that.” This has always been my understanding- an inability to evolve leads to death.

Swedish biologist and Mayan scholar Carl Calleman says, “What is about to transpire now is in other words not something that has ever happened before in the history of the universe. Maybe this impending change, partially unknown, causes the widespread denial that I feel dominate many people at the current moment. If my understanding of the Mayan calendar is correct we will in this coming night be witnessing the most significant transformation of consciousness ever in the history of mankind. What seems clear however is that people will be divided as to whether they want to flow with the incoming energies leading towards a new world or if they will resist them and seek to hold on to or go back to the system of the past” . One recommendation he makes to successfully come through the next year is ethical living and telling the truth.

The urgency here stems from the fact that our telepathic powers are returning in full force. As this happens, the current hologram ( “reality” ) we live in is quickly shifting. Cataclysmic pole shift, I don’t think so, intense magnectic realignments leading to hologram renewal is more like it. In order to access our own powers, in order to survive, you must be standing upright and honest-you must be transparent. A quote from Ariel Spilsbury & Michael Bryner of The Mayan Oracle deck states, “In transparency, (new) worlds are created”. Reread that line- it is simple and profound.

Enlightened Souls, once again these times can be manuevered with grace, our new world is here- let us then simply live transparently, telepathically sharing our thoughts without shame or manipulation. Back in our delightful earth garden (the Garden of Eden), innocent, joyful, passionate, with absolutely nothing to hide. Baby butt naked if you like!

Navajo,

May It Be So

Beach House return in January 2010 with “Teen Dream”, their third – and first classic – album, on Bella Union records.

The Beach House you’re about to meet isn’t the same as the one you’ll remember from before. Lives have been shuffled, tangled and re-aligned. When Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally returned home to their hometown of Baltimore last winter, they were worn out from touring and travel. But deep inside them hot energies were incubating, ideas they had been whispering back and forth in the wake of their sophomore full-length, 2008’s “Devotion”. By spring they began handing themselves over completely to these impulses, holing themselves up and exchanging ideas in a new, secluded practice space for dangerously long periods of time. As the songs that would become “Teen Dream” began to live, breathe and take shape, the duo were compelled to leave much of their personal lives behind them. “We were forced to let go of people and things we were holding onto as individuals” Legrand muses. “We were dropped into a wilderness, but we had more clarity than we’ve ever had before”.

Still driven to avoid distraction, the two marched further into isolation, deciding to bottle all those wild visions away from home. They packed up their lives and settled into a converted church in upstate New York with producer Chris Coady. For a month they continued the birthing process, sweating and pushing out sounds inside a cocoon of their very own weaving. They chased down songs and dark rushes, the creative telepathy that Scally and Legrand share together taking a strangely physical hold. “There’s a different level of intimacy, and physicality, on Teen Dream”, Legrand explains… “Rhythmically, there’s a new motion. This record touches you”.

“Teen Dream” is the sound of a band bursting at its creative seams. It is without question more expansive and moving than anything they have shared before. “Teen Dream” is released 25th January on Bella Union records. Beach House have recently signed to Sub Pop in the US.

Acclaim for Beach House…

“Beach House take up the opiated fuzz of dream-pop pioneers past – My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500, Spiritualized – then distil it and drizzle it over skeletal torch songs, deserted-ballroom waltzes and Motown soul choruses… Beach House are a beguiling beauty – a real vacation for the mind”

NME

“Fans of Mazzy Star, Cat Power and Galaxie 500 need Beach House in their lives…”

The Fly – 4 Stars ****

“These are fabulously woozy melodies worth lingering over, infused with Legrand’s languorous vocals and pedal steel, while their retro keyboards are especially atmospheric… they should make you melt”
Metro – 4 Stars ****

“the Baltimore duo’s narco-pop drifts over lazy organs and twilight waltzes… A lush mix of sun and shade”The Independent – 4 stars ***

“Delicate, lovelorn pop”
Pitchforkmedia – 8.5/10

“a record of autumnal beauty, all golds and browns, which evokes with extraordinary vividness a picture of a seaside resort shutting up shop and preparing for less populous months to come… A great new find.”
Sunday Times

“evoking the autumnal hues of latter-day Yo La Tengo… a slice of unadulterated dream-pop joy”
Rock Sound – 8/10

“Drifting into view on waves of slide guitar and a chorus of dreamy harmonies, this is seductive music, built in Baltimore with love and care”
WORD

“a lovely, rewarding listening experience, transporting you a million miles from our frantic modern lives”
The Sun – 4 Stars ****

“should be the soundtrack to a misty French film… deeply atmospheric and stirring”
The Guardian – 4 stars ****

“To say this record elevates the band far above the swollen ranks of shuffling shoegazers currently doing the rounds is putting it mildly”
Drowned in Sound – 9/10

“Ever wondered how Nico might sound after a day’s sunbathing? Well, wonder no longer because the gorgeous debut album by Beach House gives you some idea…”
The Times

“Classic 60’s pop arrangements filtered through the fuzzy prism of a dream… All of it as high on charm as it is on lo fi”
MOJO
“magical folk-pop from Franco-American duo. Recorded in Baltimore but haunted by opium dreams of Paris… there are exquisite moments here that recall Mazzy Star, Nico-era Velvets and even Radiohead.”
Uncut

“like an album’s worth of Femme Fatales”
Q

“Mellow, sunny and intimate… Nine tracks of soft focus music half sung / half whispered that sound like a late night transmission from the stars… broadcasting to Earth folks relaxing below a hazy late summer Sun”

A person who has not been to one of our sweats before asked what kind of protocol to expect. What a

A person who has not been to one of our sweats before asked what kind of protocol to expect. What an interesting question to me. My only response was to come prepared to be open to allow spirit to move through her.

My own experiences with protocol’s surrounding sweat lodge ceremony have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. With few yet extremely beautiful exceptions, the Lakota sweats that I have participated in have been burdened with so much protocol, rules, agendas and procedures that the ceremony itself becomes contrary to the purpose of being empty before spirit.

Because I have participated in sweat lodge ceremonies with a diversity of ceremonialists from all different backgrounds and cultures, I find Lakota sweats to be the most grueling and have chosen to avoid them in the future. Although my own elder was a Lakota Holy Man, he himself was appalled at what would unfold as his own people assembled for such a sacred ceremony.

Lakota sweats have become, in my opinion, a very structured religion with a lot of dogmatic, inflexible beliefs. Kind of like a bunch of Christians carrying feathers. This is sad because it detracts greatly from the joy and beauty that may be experienced on such sacred and communal ground. Without sounding critical I would like to explain what some of these protocol driven sweats are like. These include things that I have been scolded for and things I have witnessed others receive a, sometimes harsh, tongue lashing for. They include:

Crossing the line between the fire and the altar, wearing jewelry, not covering shoulders, arms, necks, knees, ankles if you are a woman, forgetting to take your eyeglasses off, talking, laughing, lying down if you become overwhelmed by the heat, putting tobacco offerings on the fire, being yelled out for not offering tobacco to something or someone, drinking water before the pipe is smoked, being chastised ever so indirectly, through prayer while in the sweat mind you, for being non-native, called a wannabe in sacred space, being shunned by having Lakota’s in sacred space turn their backs on you, having an entire agenda placed upon the participants, offering water to the stones, not offering water to the stones, women on their moon in ceremony or even near ceremonial space, well, you get the picture. I hardly think that the White Buffalo Calf Woman, she who brought this ceremony to the Lakota people in the first place, had this list of things to pass on to them but to each his own.

I discussed my concerns about these harsh protocols and insensitivities with a Lakota elder who explained to me that there are many factors that have gotten in the way of pure, spirit guided ceremony. The first concern and of major importance is that the Lakota elders who were taught these traditions by their elders are nearly all gone, having reached old age and crossed over. Their sons, who would be in their 40-50’s now were not available for a number of reasons during their youth, in order to be trained how to hold these ceremonies in connection with spirit. Maybe they were living off the rez, maybe they became addicted to drugs or alcohol, maybe they secured jobs that prevented them from learning or deepening these traditions. Then younger men, in their late 20’s to 40’s stepped in, many of them weekend warriors, driven by ego, to fill this gap.

In an attempt to either create the bridge or jump on the money making band wagon, Lakota’s who had no lineage began to step up and assume roles that they had not been trained for. In their own desire to “do it right” they read the book Black Elk Speaks or emulated someone who did and wound up assuming Black Elks medicine, instead of working with spirit to find their own. And so, being a chief in the Lakota culture has turned into a struggle for power driven by ego, very similar to the Christian religion, all authority, no spirit.

Sadly, because of great books like Black Elk Speaks and The Sacred Pipe, many people turn to the Lakota in order to learn about these sacred ways and they wind up learning from some random Lakota who only knows what he’s doing because he’s read the same books and emulated others. The end result is a lot of people from all different backgrounds building sweats and portraying themselves to be medicine men because they have learned the rules and abide by them and they will take those protocols and force them down your throat because isn’t that, after all, what makes them medicine men in the manner through which they learned?

They have missed out on the entire beautiful and mystical journey of cultivating relationship with mother earth through vision questing, sweating, and being humbly of service and assistance to true elders who warmly support them and empower them in discovering and cultivating their own beautiful medicine to give to the world.

So beware, seekers. Being a red man, doing a few sweats and having an eagle feather does not, a medicine man make. My journeys have provided me the opportunity to meet some amazing people who took the time to dedicate their lives to spirit, who have committed themselves to carrying these traditions forward for their elders and who pour ceremony after years of learning, training and commitment, from a state of humility and surrender. They are men and women, black, red, white and yellow, from native american tribal lineages and all races and ethnic backgrounds, and they are the real medicine men and women.

Holly Near, singer and songwriter, says in one of her songs: The ones who say they know it are the ones who will impose it on you.

How do we respond to that word? Diversity. How does it make us feel? Nervous, open, closed? Just how

How do we respond to that word? Diversity. How does it make us feel? Nervous, open, closed? Just how much diversity do you want from me? ! Am I supposed to accept everybody ? Isn’t that Jesus’ job, not mine ! Can’t I pick and choose diversity, where it’s comfortable ? I hope some of you are chuckling at least. Are these the questions for all of us, not just me ?

I believe in diversity and acceptance for everyone, but living it out isn’t always as easy. I can be very diverse and accepting on one had and not so much on the other. Here’s the big catch for me. I can’t be exclusive while Jesus was inclusive. I can’t pick and choose when God doesn’t. I know I have felt like an outsider in many of life’s forums and settings. I am mixed blood, mixed culture, hell plain mixed up most of the time. Although my humanity shines through more often than I’d like, it’s not a reason to not keep on trying. To keep building bridges and not walls. How could I choose to live a life where I would act against anyone ……..and still call myself a believer of the Christ. That’s a big catch. There’s no reconciliation in that thinking. So I must keep opening my heart.

I recently attended a lecture at Belmont University to hear Richard Twiss speak. Richard is a Lakota and was raised most of his life on the Rosebud Rez in S.D. You can find some of his life’s work at http://www.wiconi.com.

Richard spoke in part on behalf of not only his people but really for us all. We’re all in this big ole world together, and for any of us to have peace, we must get along. We must embrace other cultures and honor that they have traditions and ways that are just as important as ours. They want peace and want to watch their children grow just like us. Richard had a cool line that said “in order for there to be unity, there must be diversity”. Great line. The Father, Son, Holy Ghost. That’s more than one. But yet they are the same. One maker.

So maybe you say these are just ramblings of an old man with too much time on his hands. Maybe you are right. I have no answers, but I do have questions. I ask them of myself everyday. I slip and stumble more than I run, but boy, when I do run a little it feels good. It feels peaceful and fuller in spirit. There is a Lakota term, Mitakuye Oyasin, it loosely means “we are all related”. If so, we are all brothers and sisters. Ok I’ll shut up for now. As always, I welcome comments of any kind. I learn much from them. Peace

A number of Council Oaks dot the countryside of the United States, including, until quite recently, a 300 year old Oak on the campus of the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. The tree was used in the old days as a meeting spot by Ojibwe and Lakota tribes to discuss truces and peace agreements. When the University of Wisconsin built up around it, the tree became quite literally a symbol of the University and an artist’s drawing of the tree was incorporated into the design of the University’s seal. Students met regularly beneath its branches, and graduating nursing students would hang their uniforms from its branches (and then presumably dash for cover).

This tree succumbed to a fierce wind storm in 1987, however a replacement oak tree was planted in a nearby spot, close to the Niagra Creek on the lower campus. The new Council Oak was planted by members of local Native American tribes in a special Earth Day ceremony several years ago. The new Council Oak is a sacred and important tribal symbol.

The tree was the subject of much controversy lately, when plans for a new student center called for the destruction or removal of the tree. Native American groups strongly opposed the idea, along with student environmental groups, and a number of concerned citizens who had fond memories of the tree’s precedessor. While reluctant to revise their plans due to “additional time and money,” in the end, the University agreed to spare the new Council Oak to much fanfare.

You know, developers, if you really want to save time and money in the future, DON’T SUGGEST CUTTING DOWN HERITAGE TREES.

(Thanks to my Dad, Tom Pedersen, a UW – Eau Claire alumnus, for the news tip…)

The DVD features over two hours of live concert footage from three sold out shows in Berlin, Dublin

The DVD features over two hours of live concert footage from three sold out shows in Berlin, Dublin and Glasgow. The footage documents the end of the band’s 2007 tour in support of Baby 81, their most recent full-length release. Directed and edited by Tessa Angus with live audio mixed by BRMC’s own Peter Hayes, the gritty cinematography keeps the band’s music front and center while viewers experience the show both from the stage and from the audience’s perspective.

Over ninety minutes of unadorned, intimate behind-the-scenes footage is captured on the second bonus DVD along with additional performance footage. Viewers accompany BRMC as they record songs from Howl, see the making of the “Weapon of Choice” video, and witness inspired, impromptu off-stage performances.

The package is rounded out by a bonus audio CD featuring 14 songs from the concert film and a gorgeous 48-page booklet of previously unseen backstage and candid photos of the band. The full tracklisting and cover art will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The Los Angeles, CA-based group is currently at The Station House studio in Hollywood finishing work on their fifth studio album. Pre-production was completed in Philadelphia, PA at the same studio the where band recorded Howl. This will be the band’s first recording with drummer Leah Shapiro and is expected to have a March 2010 release.

“We lived and breathed this record for six months throughout one the coldest winters we’d ever known,” said BRMC’s Robert Levon Been. “Every track on there was practically frozen to our bones, and chipped off one sliver at a time. We recorded in the same house in Philadelphia that we began working ‘Howl’ in, but this time things were different. Having Leah behind the drums injected a lot of new fuel into the band. Right now I can’t fully describe what the record sounds like to people because I’m still too inside of it. But we’re really proud of this thing we’ve created, and someday I think it will speak for itself.”
