昨晚去看了那个电影2012，有点小小失望。狗血剧情太多，故事冗长，出场人物哪个都不惹人同情，唯独那个俄国大亨的双胞胎儿子都打扮成AC/DC造型算个亮点。而敲打地球的成分依我的标准那是远远不够啊。相比之下，昆汀今年新拍的这个『Ingluorious Basterds』就堪称神作了，电影里一群群光芒夺目的人物牵线木偶般被领往荒诞的终点，让人看完后马上就想要重看一遍——还没看过的话欢迎来我这拷片。

那么说说这个周末……首先如果有人想重温大学网吧的气氛的话，明儿夜里在Lyz会有一个Lan Party， 具体规则和费用自己点进去看吧，俺觉得貌似不怎么合算。筒子们平时要和自己人打Lan Game是怎么操作的啊？Comment里分享一下好不？

礼拜五晚上同时还有Grindcore乐队Milking The Goatmachine的发片party，海报设计的挺唬人哪……其实内容还是不知所云的碾核。太不知所云了，如果有对Cannibal Corpse一类音乐感兴趣的，还是点这里去看youtube吧俺不贴了

礼拜六同样在Vortex的这个英国Psychobility团The Meteors就靠谱一些。所谓Psychobility，拆开就是Psycho们搞得Rockability，其音乐表现可以简单描述为“扮朋克范的猫王摇滚”，在北美跟亚洲好像都没什么市场，但在西欧就流行的很。来看一下

特别要推荐一下的是，周六在青少年活动中心Blue Box的这场本地秀，主打团Room Next Door是我们锡根大学的学生团喔！主唱和主音吉他都是LCM的在读master，至于那个鼓手和弹bass的女的就不知什么来头，但至少长相跟台风都还说的过去。今年初他们在德国西北地区的Band Battle一路杀进决赛，做现场的实力相当赞！只是相比之下，myspace上那几首demo的录音就实在惨了点。

至于Blue Box这个场地，有点像是国内少年宫的意思，由社区补贴费用，平日是给荷尔蒙过剩的teenager做课后消遣的去处。大学里学生组织有点什么事要借用个场地的话，由系里打声招呼，一分钱不要就可以上了。这种场所当然设备和场地条件都 哪去，不过07年Vortex俱乐部成立之前，这个venue竟然猴子称大王地主办过一些3A级别的演出，比如05年底My Chemical Romance在Bluebox演完，回到美国马上大红大紫，再来德国上的就都是Rock am Ring级别的台面喽。

So I’m thinking of putting together a little LAN party/game gathering, but with consoles.

Given that 360s, PS3s, Wii’s, Xboxs, and whatever else have ethernet/wireless available, using a PC isn’t strictly needed to have a mass gathering.

I’ll be able to provide the networking gear, but depending on how many people are coming, I need to see whether this can be based in a home, or has to be at a place rented out.

The following games would probably be good for it I’m guessing: -

• Any of the Halo games (1 2 or 3)
• Borderlands (if anyone has it)
• Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
• Forza 2 and/or 3
• Gears Of War
• Burnout Paradise
• Race Driver: Grid
• Red Faction: Guerilla
• Colin Mcrae: Dirt
• I guess the Call Of Duty’s could be involved (I don’t own any of them, but could get one)

I can also work on trying to link together other systems (Dreamcasts, PS2s, etc), and have mini tournaments for those that cant be linked for everyone.

The only requirements really would be bring console, and if possible bring your own TV too, even just a 14″ CRT or something like that, as long as it works and your eyes dont burn off using it

I’m mainly looking for people receptive to the idea, to either help out, or if you just wanna be part of it, and also suggestions as to what games to play, and other stuff.

I am well versed in PC/Linux setup and networking, so in terms of an infrastructure, there is nothing to worry about there, I can set that up, hell it may even be possible to have a local version of Xbox Live/PSN, I’ll take a look into that.

So yeah, if you are in the Rotherham/Sheffield area in the UK, and wanna get involved, join in, or just wanna heckle, go for it.

Speaking of Left 4 Dead, I’ve been meaning to have a Left 4 Dead LAN party for ages.

3 Xbox consoles, 1 big television and 2 small ones.

I think I’ll wait for Left 4 Dead 2 to come out. Never mind the Halo series, Left 4 Dead is the reason to buy an Xbox 360! Nothing tops the fun that can be had with local co-op in a Left 4 Dead session. Add more consoles and players to the mix and it just gets better, having your full group of survivors in the same room; one Bill, one Louis, one Zoey and one Francis.

Or, if it’s Left 4 Dead 2, you’ll have one Nick, one Coach, one Rochelle and one Ellis. I’m still not sure if I like these characters as much as the old ones, though.

Anyway, this is going on the to do list. If I can pull it off I may even have eight people around, get two games going at the same time. Imagine; an entirely local versus match. I look forward to posting about this one!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you Canadians who read this blog, and a Happy Columbus Day to all of you Americans:)

Last weekend a LAN I helped to organize, Battle Royale III took place at Carleton University. It was a blast, a lot of work, tiring (24 hours long + set-up/clean-up) and a great way to meet a bunch of new gamers- like UKM from the Uber Melons. It is always a neat experience meeting gamers in person after you have seen them around on the internetz. I was also pretty psyched that my Rock Band team made semi-finals, and my PC team won a game of Counter-Strike:Source, although none of us had played in ages.

I actually missed out on the first five hours of the LAN, as I was out and about with two other organizers buying about $900 more of great prizes, when we learned that our budget was actually in the green! I’m a fan of shopping, but not when it means missing out on a LAN! We ended up picking up a lot of great stuff such as an XBOX 360, Racing wheel for the XBOX, about 30 usb thumbdrives, and a Rock Band 2 set.

It is a little bitter-sweet now to have the event in the past… every week this summer I would meet up with the other organizers to brainstorm on how to make the LAN great, and I spent a lot of my free time contacting sponsors (ended up wrangling EA, Valve, Bawls, G4 Canada, and SteelSeries!) and coordinating details for the LAN. It was a really exciting day, and I’m sad that it is over now. I am looking to being more of a participant, though, at the next LAN

So, the SOGC is having its first paintball meet – I’ll probably run a meet every few months or so (I used to be a regular baller for a while in Uni). I’ve noticed recently there’s a few games/things that are now occupying my time:

• Street Fighter 4
• Aion
• Game servers
• SOGC stuff

And my life is slowly moulding itself around spending as much time as possible on those things. Currently, things are fairly crazy hectic with the SOGC – with a ridiculous number of tasks and planning steps required for LANoWEEN 2, and the very quickly followed ForceLAN.

Over the December/January break we’ll probably plan various social events – non LAN related, but hopefully trying to build up the community even more.

I’ve got a few ideas floating in my head for things for the community to do while there aren’t any SOGC LANs being held – but for now I’ll keep those under wraps.

It’s been pretty interesting in the work we’re going to be doing for the Mosman Club for LANoWEEN 2- this is our old stomping grounds, so everyone on the crew is very familiar with setup (with the exception of Izrid, our newest admin). This leaves us in a better position to make sure all the servers are fully functioning and up and running without a problem.

We’ve got cable coverings now which we’ll be using at the venue, brand new Arlec power block units for the tables – these are the best of about 5 different brands of power blocks we’ve used; never overheating or blowing a circuit.

We have a number of competitions, that I’ll be firing out via e-mail to all our potential guests.

I can’t wait till LANoWEEN 2 because I’m 100% certain it’ll be extremely kick-ass, a lot more fun than AnniversaryLAN, better planned, and better executed. As far as AnniversaryLAN goes, it was a great, successful event, but it wasn’t the best we could have gotten. While we tried our best (making lemonade when you have lemons) – we reached maybe a 85 to 90% execution completion rate, commonly for SOGC events, we hit 90 to 95%, and we aim always for 110% (to exceed our original plans).

Anyway, some *massively* exciting stuff incoming for LANoWEEN 2. I really hope we get some awesome numbers for the event; and really push the envelope. Make some jaws drop

I’ve been looking at some other more geeky stuff – which I’ve put in a cut-away section in case you guys aren’t interested. It looks a socio-psychological behavior amongst the crowds at SOGC events, and is a sounding board for ideas on how to improve the SOGC in a fairly obtuse way.

Recently – I’d been looking into an old hobby subject of human behavioral psychology and mathematics that intrigued me; it’s surfaced again when I started looking at social networks and forum systems for the SOGC’s future marketing and a few ‘projects’ that may be implemented; the ’small world’ theorem.

Most pop culture people will recognise this as the ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’ or the ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ hypothesis – that any two nodes in a given population can be connected using a graph path of up to 6 node points. That is, between you and me, we should be able to reach each other through any number up to 6 tiers of contacts.

This theory leads to the idea of ‘clustered’ nodes in a system; mapping this out could theoretically revolutionise the way LAN parties can deal with network traffic. Let’s take a look for example, using say, DominationLAN from our last event at the Mosman RSL Club.

Game servers are only popular when they have a number of key players on the server; I won’t name these players, but their involvement is a draw card to a lot more players for any given game. These players are ‘clusters’ or ’small worlds’.

Likewise, if we looked at network traffic when everyone’s sharing open source software on DC++; certain machines, become small worlds on the network. How they share their content, what amount they’re sharing are all factored in. Usually, the larger these factors, the more active this ’small world’ becomes. Take for example, Missingo, who shares some number of terabytes of free open source content.

He becomes a ’small world’ on the network, with a lot of the smaller nodes gravitating in network traffic around him. They search his PC, they take up network transfer slots, and bandwidth generally finds itself moving along paths in the network between himself and the smaller nodes. It therefore makes sense, to ensure that Missingo has access to not only a ‘majority backplane’ for the network to reach as many users as possible with as small amount of latency as possible, but to have the shortest physical distance between the networking equipment, and convenient power access.

missingo is just a case study in this situation, there are two or three other users in the LAN who are small worlds who exceed his network activity (which is quite an achievement). As it stands, everyone is on a singular backplane (our Foundry FastIron gigabit switch) so network port placement is negligibly irrelevant.

BUT, what becomes of interest now, is the power access distribution (which power board and circuit he’s on) and his social status perception with the rest of the room. These active ’small world’ users are quickly recognised across the entire event, and interestingly, this does affect crowd psychology towards these guests at our events.

On the other end of the spectrum, we get ’stray stars’ or ’shooting stars’ – skewed members of the attending guest population to an SOGC event, where social interaction is minimal, and they appear to have minimal presence in our event. These are the guests who attend and either know no other person at the event, one or two people, or are attending at the behest of another guest, despite showing minimal interest in the event. Thankfully with the SOGC, these ’stray stars’ are minimal in number, usually less than 5% of the population at an SOGC event (AnniversaryLAN and DominationLAN were the only events so far to have 1 attendee as a ’stray star’ in each event, the best results so far).

What is the best way to resolve this ’stray star’ situation? BY reducing it, we increase connectivity and quality in the population, the available population data improves for the theory (thus making this management method more effective)? Shorten the number of nodes used in the ‘path’ between these small world guests and the ’shooting star’ guests — OR, increase the number of viable nodes connected to the ’shooting star’.

An example: Let’s use one chap who was at AnniversaryLAN, we’ll refer to him as Ice Cream Dude. He was a younger gamer attending the event — I believe his dad is one of our regulars attending.

In order to increase event quality, and to make things more active for the population – an emphasis was placed on this ’stray star’ guest. Coincidentally, RSM then became interested, and RSM being a ’small world’ guest, attracted both other small worlds and the other nodes into recognising this guest (Ice Cream Dude).

As such, quality amongst the group was driven upwards; people had more fun – noticeably during the gaming trivia.

The small worlds theorem is an interesting one, and I could rant on literally for hours, but let’s call this a night

I’ll most likely continue later on in the ‘day’.

Las fechas definitivas del evento son: 12 al 16 de noviembre, cambia la ciudad y se celebrará en la Ciudad de México, no en Monterrey como originalmente se tenía planeado, será en la Expo Bancomer en Santa Fé.

Organizers encourage educators around the world to get together with colleagues and engage in lively, online discussions during this time using links provided by EdTechTalk. Esse fim de semana foi legal… foi um fim de semana muito esperado…

Pra começar, frio da porra na sexta, mas mesmo assim foi um role legal…

Começou com a ida no Cuba Café, tava rolando uma discotecagem de hip-hop/black music/rap/jazz com o Ursão, encontrei com um dos guitarristas da minha banda, o xfillx,  fizemos um tempo lá curtindo o som.

Depois, eu e o fill fomos pro Divina Comédia, onde encontratíamos o Makoto, o Grim e o Jean pra ver uns amigos tocarem, Zelenski e Raphael do Cor-séría e depois a banda da kill, Give me a Break, acabei chegando em casa às 5 da manhã… Isso que tinha saído só pra dar uma volta hahaha…

No sábado,  finalmente chegou o dia da Lan Party aqui em casa… foi uma parada que combinei com os kras por 2 meses pra conseguir dar certo…

Pela tarde chegou o Alexis, meu primo, e fomos na casa dele buscar as paradas dele… chegamos e fomos na casa do Bigode e pegamos as coisas dele…

Começamos a arrumar as coisas, montar as paradas e logo estávamos no TF2, fazendo uns frags ahahaha.

De noite, o André, meu primo de SP,  chegou e montamos o pc dele tbm, fizemos todas as ligações e começamos a jogar…

Assim foi o FDS inteiro… ora no pc, ora no wii jogando Super Smash Bros Braw, ora fazendo churrasco…
