Tuesday 15 & Wednesday 16 December

If you’re dreaming of a different kind of seasonal celebration this Christmas, then look no further as The Dukes will be decking the halls with an alternative Christmas Cabaret on 15 and 16 December.

Sip on a chilled glass of Kir Royal whilst enjoying a festive buffet from Lancaster’s Quite Simply Food and wait for the fun to begin. The house band will be playing live music and Cliff Richard is definitely off the agenda.

Then its ‘show-time’ with a line-up as camp as Christmas. The incomparable Henning Wehn, the self-styled German Comedy Ambassador, will be keeping the evening on track with his impeccable German timing. You’ll also be treated to some of the finest comedy, magic and music from the likes of The Re-Entrants and comedy performer Kriss Foster. A few surprises are also promised along the way, and thanks to the wonders of theatre technology, The Dukes can guarantee you snow!

This is the perfect way for friends, couples and groups alike to celebrate the season, and there’s not a Little Drummer Boy in sight.

Tickets for the evening cost £28.50 with discounts for groups of 10 or more. Please call The Dukes Box Office on 01524 598500 or see www.dukes-lancaster.org to book.

The Round – 22/11/09

Reviewed by Reza Mills

Musical comedy has had something of a renaissance in the past few years thanks to the efforts of Bill Bailey, Rich Hall (as Otis Lee Crenshaw) and ahem; Tim Minchin. You can now add Mitch Benn to that delectable list. Mitch has been plying his trade since 1994 and is a regular writer and performer on Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’ as well as ‘Its’ Been a Bad Week’ on Radio 2. You might even have seen him on BBC1’s Watchdog at various times. In addition to all this Mitch has a regular touring band called ‘The Distractions’ (a knowing nod to Elvis Costello’s The Attractions perhaps?) which he formed back in 2003 and with whom he has released 7 full length CD’s, the latest of which is called Where Next?. Lancaster is the penultimate show on the current tour.

The Distractions are a trio consisting of obviously Mitch Benn on Lead Vocals/Guitar, long time collaborator Kirsty Newton on Bass/keyboards and back-up vocals and a replacement drummer (whose name I’ve forgotten, sorry whoever you are!) for other regular Tasha Baylis. The Round is for the most part packed with what seems to be your stereotypical ‘Radio 4 listener’, something Mitch picks up on. Curiously there are very few younger people present, could it be that Mitch is too cult even for them?

Those not familiar with Mitch’s work, think of a less surreal, more topical Bill Bailey and your halfway there. Like Bailey, Benn is an extremely proficient and talented musician, capable at turning his hand to most musical styles. He covers the gambit of genres ranging from Jazz-fusion, heavy metal, rock opera, hip-hop, and ska. The Distractions work very well as a collective unit, very tight and cohesive despite the many technical difficulties present on the evening. You could say there were many ‘Ghosts in the Machine’ present tonight; see this comedy stuff is contagious. Its’ credit to Mitch who shows himself to be the consummate professional that he continues and preservers through all the hitches and difficulties with the equipment. Lesser men would probably have thrown in the towel in frustration. In fact Kirsty does a fine job of entertaining the audience whilst Mitch tries to iron out the problems faced by his guitar. Whilst Mitch is clearly the star and the reason why we’re all here, Kirsty should not be forgotten. She does have a very fine voice and in fact takes the lead on an early 60’s twisted love song called ‘Now he’s gone’.

The evening is a successful mix of friendly banter and music, Mitch often giving a brief synopsis of the number about to be played. Highlights include a great Heavy Metal pastiche called ‘Oh IKEA’; Mitch doing a great Steve Harris interpretation, with the old machine gun bass and yo-yo eyebrows. He also does a hilarious Morrissey micky-take, whining away in ‘Never went through a Smiths phase’ and a great Eminem/Shakespeare collaboration called ‘(Macbeth) My Name is’ complete with hockey mask and gangsta strut. In tribute to The War of the Worlds, he performs his own rock opera ‘The very hungry caterpillar’ a song that recalls Meatloaf in places, suitably bombastic and silly this is a new song taken from ‘Where Next?’ Referencing the constant slew of ‘previously unreleased’ Beatles albums flooding the market he performs ‘Please don’t release this song’. Could equally be applied to the countless Jimi Hendrix albums released posthumously.

‘A minutes noise for John’ is a lovely, heartfelt tribute to legendary Radio DJ John Peel done in the style of a 1977 punk band (in this case The Undertones – one of John’s favourite bands) and ‘Sing Like an Angel’ is a savage satire sung in the perspective of an X-Factor wannabe. Mitch also shows off his improvisional skills when just before the break he asks the audience to come up with at least 3 topics that he has to write a song about in the interval. The 3 topics were Floods (my suggestion), Tuition Fees and a murdered girl who was served as a kebab. He plays this song at the start of the second half.

Needless to say there were many highlights to the show, but I thought I’d give you all a taster of what you can expect when you go and see him for yourselves. You can catch Mitch either on air on numerous programmes (too many to list at present) or on Watchdog, believe me its’ even worth putting up with Anne Robinson.

Remodelers Council awarded 13 companies with a 2009
Remodelers Award of Excellence, a distinction recognizing
outstanding and creative renovation projects in Lancaster County!

A team of remodeling professionals from outside Lancaster County judged the projects on workmanship/quality of construction, degree of difficulty, value/cost effectiveness, sensitivity to existing structure, use of space, and customer service. For ‘Baby Stages’ we brought in our own little puppet baby, Callum as part of the provision. Callum was a big hit with the children and parents as they played with the cushions, buckets, material, bells and percussion instruments.

It has been a huge blessing to be so close to my family over these holidays, even though we miss our church family at Bethel Grace terribly. I enjoyed being around my mom over Thanksgiving and learning the tricks of the trade (a.k.a. how to make the renowned Hollingsworth family stuffing). We were a big group and had so much fun! I am so thankful for the family God has blessed me with!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, we went in search of a Christmas Tree. It’s the first time I’ve been to a Christmas Tree farm (that I can remember, at least). Despite the fact that we didn’t get to actually chop the tree down ourselves, we had a blast! We looked through rows and rows of trees until we found the perfect one – our little “frazier.” No, we didn’t name the tree based on the T.V. series, it actually is a type of pine with really cool needle shape and color. I think the pictures will do better at explaining what it looks like.

On Monday, I spent the morning decorating the tree to the sound of some good Christmas music. I think this is the earliest we’ve ever gotten or decorated a tree.

There will be more to come as Christmas is approaching (I’m hoping for a white one). Thank you for taking time to share in a little of the family fun from this weekend.

I am always amazed at the creativity and the beauty found in God’s creation. Everywhere we’ve lived there are priceless examples of God’s Glory in creation. I love soaking it all in and marveling at His use of color, texture, forms, etc. I will never cease to be in awe of our Creator.

This fall we got to enjoy the display of God’s Glory in the fall colors of Lancaster, PA. I don’t have to say anything more. When you see these pictures, marvel at your Creator and thank him for His wondrous works!

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Romans 1:20

“When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:3-4

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1

I’ll leave you with lyrics to a great song by Keith and Kristyn Getty called “Don’t Let Me Lose My Wonder”:

I’ve seen days melt into nights in circles of lights,
I’ve watched a spider spin a star between the window box flowers,
I’ve heard you laugh and cry in a single sigh,
And a story form within.

Don’t let me lose my wonder,
Don’t let me lose my wonder.

I saw her broken dreams inside but helping others fly,
I saw his eyes without a doubt though other lights faded out,
And though her calling roared, such graciousness poured
From the vision of her soul.

A baby cried through the dark beneath a jeweled spark,
I knew Your voice upon the hill and heard my lostness still,
I found my home in the light where wrong was made right
And You rose as the morning star.

Let’s get it on the wall:

are made simple.

We can install a line just about anywhere for $30. Including Concealed wires, internal and external walls in apartments or homes.

Wall fishes are $50 & includes outlet.

Call Us:

Flat Panel TV Installation: Hiding Connecting Cables
Surely, everyone would agree that a wall-mounted flat panel LCD TV or plasma television would look at its best when all connecting power and audio/video cables are completely hidden.

However, most often, there isn’t any pre in-wall ducting through which to pass A/V cables and power cords between the TV and the interconnecting gear.

And if there is any empty conduit buried in walls, this is probably the ¾-inch (20mm) diameter type used by electricians in domestic installations. This is too small to carry the larger diameter audio and video cables.

One should keep in mind that any wiring solution for audio and video cables should take into account that these cables have limited pull strength with respect to electrical wiring, and come with pre-installed connectors. In other words, you need a relatively large diameter conduit to pass audio and video cables when concealing cables in walls.

Aesthetically, running cables through a wall yields the best results. Yet from a practical perspective, this requires substantial DIY skills, and a lot of effort especially when retrofitting a room. Furthermore, should you decide to hire a professional installer, the whole job can turn out to be pretty expensive – costing several hundred dollars – and often complicated to manage.

In addition, once cables are installed in walls and access holes closed, it would not be easy to replace any faulty cables, nor pass extra cables later.

Equally important, burying cables in walls as a wiring solution is invasive in nature. It requires expensive patching should the day come when you decide to move that flat panel TV elsewhere.

Moving to a surface mounted wiring solution would do away with all these difficulties and installation expense. Up to now, most inexpensive wiring solutions intended for the DIY installer consisted of nothing more than PVC trunking. It is true that these are available in various shapes and colors, but these wiring solutions with their cheap plastic feel, do not complement the stylish look of modern flat screen televisions.

But… don’t despair! Luckily, things are starting to change thanks to the availability of a few ’stylish’ wiring solutions on the market targeting the DIY home installer.

A more reasonable solution we have come across is to utilize a Wiremold Cord Cover Kit that can be found at BEST BUY. It is well thought-out, easy to install, relatively inexpensive, product and once installed, has the custom look of an in-wall installation without the permanence and expense associated with buried wiring.

Wilf Lancaster Orchestra 1967

(The picture was taken in 1967 at the Kinsmen Auditorium.)
Thank You to Wilf’s daughter Cheryl, who replied to the archive with this great information.

My dad began playing the drums in bands in and around Chatham about the mid to late ’30s. He played at Erie Beach, and in Chatham the band played at a couple of outdoor dance pavilions during the summer and the Pyranon Ballroom as well.

This was war time and dances were held most evenings. As I mentioned to you in an earlier e-mail, big bands were playing in Detroit and the Chatham Musicians’ Union agent would travel to Detroit, meet with the band’s booking agent, and if and when a convenient day was determined, that band would travel to Chatham to play a one-night gig. The Musicians’ Union rules at the time dictated that if an out-of-country band was playing, an equal number of Canadian musicians had to be on hand at the dance hall and paid according to union wages. As dad’s band was the house band at the Pyranon Ballroom, he and his musicians were paid to be in attendance and to play during the big name band’s intermission.

In 1966, dad began putting his dream of a band reunion together with several of the old members. The First Annual Reunion of the Big Band Sound of Wilf Lancaster was held in October, 1966. The curtain rose to the playing of ‘With A Song In My Heart’ (his theme song chosen in 1938). The hall was absolutely packed. I was indeed privileged to be a part of that night, as my dad had included a part for organ in the arrangements. The band went on to play monthly gigs at the Pyranon and were hired to play at various clubs’ annual dances.

Due to poor health, he was forced to give up playing. On Friday, November 13th, 1970, the curtain came down on the band. As we were playing the theme song for the very last time, I looked over at my dad and saw one big tear trickling down each cheek. It was all I could do to keep playing. On that night, the baton was handed over to Fred Foster (now deceased) and Bill Pritchard.

Dad passed away in June 1973, but I know he would be so very happy to know that his band continued to play well into the 90s, under the name of ‘The Lancaster Band’.

As a Lancaster Wrongful Death Attorney with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million

As a Lancaster Wrongful Death Attorney with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million dollar or larger settlements from over thirty years of experience in or around Lancaster, other nearby cities and internationally, I know many of you are attempting to settle your own personal injury, dog bite and wrongful death cases by yourselves for the maximum and the biggest settlement you can to save the cost of an attorney.

In this article I’ll tell you the secrets of how attorneys negotiate for top dollar and I’ll also tell you why insurance companies lick their chops and rub their hands together with glee when individuals try to settle their claims without an attorney and why, in most cases, you’ll receive a larger, much greater amount in your pocket or in the trust fund you set up for any children injured in the accident, even after an attorney’s fee and costs if you hire a reputable and experienced personal injury attorney.

If you’ve been the victim of a car, motorcycle, bike, truck, pedestrian, bicycle, or auto accident, lost a loved one in a wrongful death or been the victim of a dog bite or animal attack, you can visit our website at http://www.sebastiangibsonlaw.com for more information and call us at any of the numbers easily found on our website.

First, you need to know that insurance companies evaluate cases two ways. As soon as you begin negotiating with the insurance company yourself, they evaluate your case, unfortunately, in terms of a nuisance value matter. They’ve settled tens or hundreds of thousands of cases with individuals before for paltry amounts and they will expect they can settle your case for a measly amount as well.

Why do they look at you as if you’re chopped meat? As soon as you tell them you are negotiating your own settlement, they know you’re trying to save money. To them, that means you may even be desperate. They also know you won’t be as knowledgeable about their tricks and tactics and like those tens or hundreds of thousands of people before you, they know how they can play you until you either become so frustrated you settle for their bad offer or become panicked that your time is running out.

The second way they evaluate a case, namely one presented by a lawyer, is an analysis of what the case’s true settlement value is based on the attorney’s skill and experience, how prepared the case is for litigation in the event it doesn’t settle, and the actual value of the injuries and associated pain and suffering, wage loss and other out of pocket expenses.

To settle your case for the largest amount possible, which may be the policy limits of the insurance policy, depending upon the severity of your injuries, you need to get the insurance adjuster to evaluate your case in the same manner they would as if an attorney were negotiating with them. While most insurance companies, unfortunately, simply won’t do that, here’s what you need to do to try to obtain the maximum settlement value.

First, you need to obtain all of your medical records and bills. You can’t rely on the insurance company to do this. As soon as you tell the insurance company you want them to do this or agree to having them do it and tell you how much your medical bills come to and what your medical records say, you are giving up control of the situation. I can’t stress this enough.

You will need to sign authorization forms to obtain your medical records and bills and pay the cost of obtaining those medical records and bills (the cost of which can range from $15 to hundreds of dollars) from each hospital, ambulance company, doctor, chiropractor, radiologist, emergency room billing service, etc. Some medical providers require you to use their authorization forms. Some require you to agree to their using a photocopy service to copy your records at a higher cost. Some medical providers require one fee for your bills and another fee for your medical records.

Just obtaining all of your medical records and bills is one of the most time consuming aspects of handling personal injury cases. And, to make matters worse, you’re still not through with your medical providers. When your treatment is complete and you have all of your medical records and bills and the first settlement offer is made to you, you’ll need to call each of your medical providers or their billing offices again to learn if you have any balance owing (and you can expect to be on the phone repeatedly and for long periods of time to learn this information) and in many cases you will need to send them another authorization form before they’ll tell you this information.

You will need to obtain a copy of the police report. This is a much simpler process. Some police departments charge between $10 to $40 for a copy, while other departments provide them to you for free. You can pick it up at the police or CHP office yourself or request one by mail with an authorization form and a check for the proper fee.

You’ll also need to obtain your wage loss information on a wage loss form from your employer if you suffered any wage losses or had to use up valuable sick time, personal time, or vacation days.

You should obtain witness statements if there is any issue as to the liability of the other driver for the accident and you should take photos of the scene if there was something wrong with the road conditions or other unusual circumstances.

You will also need to obtain a number of good photographs of your car damage, copies of the vehicle repair bills and estimates and receipts for any items damaged in your vehicle.

Here’s a secret. In California you are entitled to the cost of a replacement child seat if one was in the accident. It’s automatic. Just tell the insurance company the make and model or find out the cost for the make and model child seat and the insurance company will send you a check for a new one, even if the old one wasn’t broken. Why? It’s in the California insurance code. The insurance companies, however, don’t volunteer this information. Why? They’re in business to make money, not pay it out.

Finally, when all your treatment is done, you will need to put together a demand package with a demand letter reviewing the facts of the accident and the negligence of the other driver that made him or her at fault, a summary of your injuries and medical treatment (from your medical records), an itemization of your medical bills, a discussion of your pain and suffering and how the injuries impacted your life, a discussion of your wage loss and how you determined the amount, and finally the amount of your demand and a time limit (40 days – the time allotted under the insurance code) for the insurance company to respond with their offer. The demand letter should be a minimum of four pages in length. Some of ours have been close to twenty pages. Accompanying the demand letter should be copies of all of your medical records and bills, color copies of the car damage photos, copies of the repair bills and estimates, any wage loss documentation and any other relevant items such as witness statements, etc.

If all of this is too much work for you to accomplish (and it is a lot when you are just trying to get better, get on with your life, raise a family and still go to work to put food on the table) you may want to hire our law firm to represent you.

The reason why, in most cases you will receive more, even after an attorney’s fees and costs are taken out, is that insurance companies offer much more to an attorney handling your case than when you are attempting to settle it yourself. In addition, an experienced and reputable lawyer can also obtain reductions from your health insurance company and from any medical providers with a balance with regards to what amount has to be paid back to them out of any settlement.

When you rely on the insurance company to pay your medical bills, and then simply pay you a skimpy amount on top, you are giving them the right to determine what bills they think were “reasonable” and to obtain any reductions in the bills to save themselves money. When an attorney obtains a reduction in your bills or your health insurance company lien, the amount the attorney saves increases the amount of your net settlement.

Keep in mind that as soon as you start negotiating your claim by yourself, it’s almost impossible for an attorney to persuade the insurance company to evaluate your case in the higher category type of claim. At our law firm, while we’ll take on a case that may be months old where the injured victim has simply been receiving medical treatment, we won’t take on the case in most cases if the victim has already received a bad offer from the insurance company. At that stage it’s usually too late for an attorney to make much of a difference.

Hopefully, this article has provided you with some insights as to how to obtain the maximum settlement from an insurance company for an auto, car, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, truck, dog bite, or wrongful death claim. There is much more that an experienced attorney does, especially in the negotiation stage to maximize the settlement and this is where an attorney’s experience kicks in.

An attorney such as Sebastian Gibson who has been negotiating these cases with many of the same adjusters for decades, knows the tactics and negotiating style of them and their companies and knows how refute the talking points their insurance companies train their adjusters to use in negotiations.

What causes many attorneys to be unable to settle their cases and who then find themselves with no alternative but to file a lawsuit in court and face two to five years of litigation before the matter settles or goes to jury, is to get angry (some even scream and yell) with the adjuster, box themselves into a corner and tell the adjuster something along the lines of, “If that’s the best you can do, we’re filing suit.” The adjuster’s response to this is naturally, “go ahead.”

An insurance company doesn’t really care if they have to dump your case onto the case load of their attorneys who are already handling tens of thousands of such cases. One more case, makes no difference to them at all. They also know, you may give up or settle for even less when you learn from an attorney how much just the court costs will be. Just to file a lawsuit in most courts alone incurs a $350.00 or larger filing fee. Depositions can cost over a thousand dollars if they are lengthy. And all such court costs come out of your settlement, even if you have a contingency fee attorney handling your case.

Sadly, many of these same lawyers take this step or let their improperly trained staff members (secretaries and clerks) force the matter to such an impasse and then file suit without properly informing the client of the negotiations that took place and led them to that point.

If you are negotiating with an insurance company yourself, there’s no need to be unpleasant. Yes, you are probably going to hear that the insurance adjuster has evaluated your case to be worth much less than you think it’s worth. But you’re forgetting that, that’s just their first offer. Communicate with the adjuster. Tell them how the injuries affected your life and tell them what you still go through today with the pain you still have. You’ll be surprised how many adjusters will actually relate to what you tell them.

Unfortunately, just as there are bad attorneys out there, there are also some lousy insurance adjusters and insurance companies to deal with as well. They’re supposed to get back to you in 40 days with an offer after you present them with your demand package. Some take longer. Some will sound unpleasant, even snotty. And once they make their first offer, it can take weeks sometimes to reach the adjuster again to make your counter-offer. Sometimes the negotiations can take months. If you want to get the most you can for your case, you need to be patient. Your job, just as it is the job of your attorney, is to get these unpleasant insurance adjusters to warm up. I ask them how the weather is, how they’re doing, if their busy, anything to get them to open up to me. You’d be surprised how far a little kindness goes.

We wish you good luck and a speedy recovery from your injuries. You’ll find that your health, in many cases, will drastically improve, once you remove yourself from the stress of handling your case and resolve it either yourself or with the assistance of our law firm by way of settlement. If on the other hand, your case goes into litigation, as do the cases of many lawyers who don’t have the settlement experience or negotiating tools to settle their cases advantageously for their clients, your stress level will almost certainly rise.

As a Lancaster Truck Accident Lawyer with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million do

As a Lancaster Truck Accident Lawyer with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million dollar or larger settlements from over thirty years of experience in or around Lancaster, other nearby cities and internationally, I know many of you are attempting to settle your own personal injury, dog bite and wrongful death cases by yourselves for the maximum and the biggest settlement you can to save the cost of an attorney.

As a Lancaster Personal Injury Lawyer with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million d

As a Lancaster Personal Injury Lawyer with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million dollar or larger settlements from over thirty years of experience in or around Lancaster, other nearby cities and internationally, I know many of you are attempting to settle your own personal injury, dog bite and wrongful death cases by yourselves for the maximum and the biggest settlement you can to save the cost of an attorney.

As a Lancaster Pedestrian Accident Attorney with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple mil

As a Lancaster Pedestrian Accident Attorney with millions of dollars in settlements and multiple million dollar or larger settlements from over thirty years of experience in or around Lancaster, other nearby cities and internationally, I know many of you are attempting to settle your own personal injury, dog bite and wrongful death cases by yourselves for the maximum and the biggest settlement you can to save the cost of an attorney.
