From September 21 – 27, 2009, Bread Winners Café & Bakery will team up with CancerCare for the sixth annualCupcakes for a Cause, supporting children affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Bread Winners Café & Bakery will sell specially decorated cupcakes at all three locations and donate a portion of the proceeds from their sale to CancerCare for Kids, a program that provides free, professional support services to children affected by cancer.

This fall festival, which runs September 19th through November 1st, boasts of more than 150,000 fall blooming flowers including chrysanthemums, salvia, coleus, ornamental grasses and impatiens. Always a favorite spot for the family photo, The Tom Thumb Pumpkin Patch and the gardens are filled with over 25,000 decorative pumpkins and gourds. Also in the Pecan Grove is the walk-through 15′ pumpkin house constructed out of the finest pumpkins in the patch and a 10′ pumpkin topiary decorated with orange marigolds.

From 5-8 p.m., customers will receive a 3-ounce serving of Jack’s Creation in exchange for a donation to this worthy cause. Donations that night and all month long will benefit the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

YAAD Art Show to Benefit The Stewpot of Dallas

Please join the Young Artist Association of Dallas for a fun night of wine and art to benefit The Stewpot of Dallas.

80% of the proceeds will benefit the art program at The Stewpot, which after volunteering for, I can say is a remarkable program that can change lives. For 6 hours, 3 days of week, The Stewpot opens its doors to the homeless community of Dallas to provide free art classes to whoever wishes to participate. These art classes act as a form of therapy, and provide the opportunity to work for an income. Each participant has the choice of his/her personal medium–whether it be from acrylics to oils to jewelry making. Then, the artist can choose to put the artwork up for sale at The Stewpot, with 90% of the proceeds given to that artist. This creates an exciting environment filled with creativity, inspiration, and hope. Our goal is to sell our artwork to raise as much money as possible to provide the program with more freedom and the ability to continue to make such a positive impact on the Dallas community.

Enjoy it

The day of music starts early (and involves food; more on that in a minute), but the highlights, we would argue, still come at the regularly scheduled rock-out time of, er, nighttime. Let’s start with The Debs, who reunite for their first concert in three decades at The Outland Ballroom tonight with The Sympletons (maybe the best hybrid name we’ve actually seen used, since the band includes members of The Symptoms and The Skeletons) following them onstage. The Debs were a shooting star in the local music scene, burning bright while on tour throughout the Midwest as a four-piece punk group comprised entirely of women. The band split up just as it was getting attention from people in the industry, but after going their separate ways the band is back together to bring its rock-meets-harmonizing style to an audience again. Should be a blast.

Remember that food-with-rock show we mentioned? Check that out and a whole lot more after the break.

* Sertoma Summer Sizzle at Summers at the River, with 4Jax, Bad Habit, Levee, Tripwire and Trash Angels. There’s so much going on here we don’t know where to begin. The event is a barbecue tasting, kickball tournament (that’s correct, yes) and rock concert–helluva combo, eh? Tripwire and Trash Angels may bring the house down with the hot guitar licks, but the band to catch here may be Levee, which is likely playing its last show or close to it as the members are moving on to new projects. Get your ’70s-infused “cock rock” while you can.

* Lance Lopez, Bobby Gardner Band and Underground Blues Division at Nathan P. Murphy’s. Geez, speaking of hot guitar licks, two of Springfield’s top-gun guitar players come together on the Murphy’s stage tonight–in support of a master. Texas-based Lance Lopez is making his first trip into the city to show what he can do… and the guy who taught Wes Jeans everything he knows can do quite a lot.

* The Cropdusters, The Bootheel and The BoogeyMen at The High Life Live Martini Lounge. Epic fail if you haven’t seen these three bands yet. We’ve waxed poetic about Cropdusters and Bootheel over time, but The BoogeyMen may be less familiar to weekend-show audiences. Get there early and catch one of the city’s hidden gems at work… and don’t let singer Diablo Maximus give you too much crap.

* The Dropouts at Roadhouse Cycles & Saloon

* Benjamin Jackson Band, Benefit of a Doubt and Afraid Of Monsters at The Outland. AOM is playing what is likely to be its last show before the band moves to the West Coast. Haven’t seen them yet? Now is the time.

Nama Lance Lopez mungkin belum begitu di kenal oleh para pecinta Blues ditanah air, tapi bagi anda yang memiliki jaringan facebook dengan Rama Satria Claproth maka akan segera tahu betapa gitaris blues rock asal Jakarta ini sedang gandrung kepada pemusik kelahiran Shreveport,  Louisiana pada tahun 1977 ini.

Ketika Onestopblues mencoba menelusuri siapa pemusik ini, dan coba mendengarkan sample lagu-lagu dari empat album yang telah dirilisnya, nampak betul bahwa Lance Lopez yang bermain gitar dan sambil bernyanyi ini memiliki kemiripan, atau katakanlah ada dalam satu ruang dengan Rama Claport  atau Gugun (and The Blues Shelter), sama-sama dipengaruhi secara kuat oleh  Jimi Hendrix dan Stevie Raya Vaughan, yang kemudian dibumbui dengan unsur funk–mungkin dalam hal Lance Lopez rumusannya didapat dari penggabungan musik  Jimi Hendrix. Stevie Ray Vaughan dan Robin Trower, yang memunculkan karakter utama musik Lance Lopez.

Ada dua kejadian penting yang membuat Lance Lopez  akhirnya memutuskan blues sebagai pilihan hidupnya. Pertama terjadi di saat ia berusia 10 tahun. Kejadiannya adalah saat kakaknya memutar lagu “Are You Experienced” dari album Jimi Hendrix Experienced. “Saat itu kakak saya bersama temannya sedang ada di kamarnya. Saya datang, dan kakak saya, memasang piringan hitam Jimi Hendrix album Are You Experienced , dan  dari piringan hitam  tersebut diputar lagu “Are You Experienced” . Wow. Begitu mendengar musik dan permainan gitar dari Jimi Hendrix pada lagu tersebut, sebagai anak yang hidup di tahun 80 an, yang segera terlintas adalah pemusik Prince yang sedang naik daun saat itu. Saya kemudian mengambil cover PH  Are You Experienced, melihat tampang Jimi dalam cover album tersebut. Saya pikir Jimi adalah pemusik pendatang baru, dan saya berkata. Wah Prince bakal lewat oleh pemusik ini, kata saya dan tiba-tiba saia kakak saya dan temannya meledakan tawanya, tertawa hampir tak henti-henti, hingga akhirnya mereka mengatakan bahwa Jimi Hendrix telah meninggal hampir duapuluh tahun yang lalu. Kejadian kedua terjadi pada tahun 1990, saat Lance Lopez bermukim di Dallas. Di kota ini ia datang ke Benson and Hedges Festival. Bintang utama dalam Festival tersebut adalah Stevie Ray Vaughan dan Jimi Hendrix. Pada saat itulah saya tahu apa yang harus cari dari permainan gitar, dan saya menjadi cinta pada blues lebih dari musik yang lain. Saya kemudian mulai menggali blues lebih dalam, lewat Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Bukka White dll. Saya kembali bermain akustik gitar.” kata pemusik yang sudah mulai bermain gitar elektrik pada usia 8 tahun ini.

Dua tahun kemudian Lance Lopez bersama orang tuanya pindah ke New Orleans. Disini ia mulai berkenalan dengan unsur funk dan R&B. Ia juga menjadi pemusik profesional. Pernah menjadi pemusik pengiring  pemusik soul legendaris Johny Taylor dan belakangan bergabung dengan dengan band pengiring pemusik blues kontomporer  Lucky Peterson, selama tiga tahun, disinilah ia mematangkan diri hingga  akhirnya membentuk grup sendiri dan jadi seperti sekarang.

Diseara suntem in Hala de muzica pentru pozat la Lance Lopez. Survolaj sunt in deschidere, cu lansare de album.

Cam asa suna unul din versurile piesei “Singur” compuse de Daniel-Silvian Petre, solistul trupei timisorene Survolaj, refacuta acum doi ani (dupa o pauza de mai bine de un deceniu). 

El mi-a povestit in “Cotidianul” cate ceva despre albumul lansat in aceasta luna si despre cum au tesut in jurul unor hituri mai vechi needitate pe primele doua discuri (“Hora de baieti” pe versuri de Arghezi ori “Cantecul ploaiei” pe versuri de Macedonski) melodii mai noi destinate initial unui proiect solo (“Singur”, “Cel mai iubit dusman al meu”).

Cat despre soundul noului disc, vocalul Survolaj spune:

“Toti cei patru membri ai trupei Survolaj venim din zone muzicale diferite, asa ca piesele nu seamana intre ele. Ne place foarte mult bluesul, ne place rockul psihedelic, iar în anii de pauză fiecare am plecat urechea la jazz. Am invatat şi lectia lui Kurt Cobain, anume că se poate face muzica buna si din doua acorduri si ca nu e nevoie sa-ti etalezi talentele in piese de 18 minute”.

Trupa banateana de rock blues (cu influente de progresiv, funky, grunge si cu o interesanta preluare dupa “Blestemul” Mariei Tanase) si-a lansat deja proaspatul LP intr-un concert timisorean. Cel de-al treilea disc, “Strazi bantuite de noapte”, va fi lansat si la Bucuresti.

Pe 27 mai, Survolaj va canta la clubul Hala in deschiderea chitaristului rock blues Lance Lopez, iar dupa doua zile, pe 29 mai, va reveni cu lansarea propriu-zisa in clubul Big Mamou, unde solistul va promova şi cea de-a doua sa carte de poezie, “Napalm D’Or”.

Lance Lopez, unul dintrei cei mai buni chitarişti ai generaţiei sale (i se spune ”Axe-ripper”, „Texas Riff Master”, „Texas Axeslinger”, „The Killer Guitar“, One-man-rock- machine) va trage la Big Mamou, aflu de pe pagina online a clubului bucurestrean.

Chitaristul de blues-rock aflat intr-un turneu european va mai concerta si in clubul Hala din Capitala, unde opening actul se anunta extrem de interesant: trupa Survolaj revine cu un nou album, dar si cu un nou volum semnat de solistul-poet Daniel-Silvian Petre (pentru mai multe detalii, vezi aici).

Miniturneul romanesc include si Timisoara, Cluj si Buzau (vezi datele de mai jos). Ce nu mi-e clar e ce se intampla intre 24 si 26 mai la Bucuresti. Are cineva idee despre ce emisiuni tv e vorba si unde este acel “Bucharest Blues Club”?

Lance Lopez s-a născut în oraşul Shreveport din statul Louisiana în anul 1977. In 2001, a castigat premiul pentru Trupa Blues a Anului oferit la festivitatea Dallas Music Awards. A cantat in deschiderea mai-marilor bluesului. Exemple: Steve Vai, Jeff Beck, B.B. King.

Anul trecut a deschis concertele unor trupe legendare, precum ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Def Leppard sau Ten Years After. Si era sa uit ce era mai important: Lance este un demn urmas al lui Jimi Hendrix. Si nu-l face deloc de rusine (vedeti clipul de mai jos).

UPDATE (20 mai): Potrivit organizatorilor de la Event Plus, care se ocupa de concertul din clubul Hala al lui Lance Lopez, in Bucuresti vor fi pana la urma doua concerte: la Hala si la Big Mamou. Restul tine de faptul ca artistul nu si-a actualizat pagina de MySpace. De fapt, pe 24 mai, bluesmanul texan va ajunge la Falticeni. Mai multe aici.
